FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

Skechers GO GOLF Blade GF

50 Words or Less

The FootJoy Tour Alpha is built for stability, and it delivers.  Great support and cushioning.

Introduction

If you track the golf shoe market, you’ve noticed a trend toward “do anything, go anywhere” shoes.  Those shoes are great for a casual nine or a quick range session.  But when you need to hit the fairway on #18, you want a shoe built for one thing: stability.  The FootJoy Tour Alpha is that shoe.

If you asked me to draw a high tech, top of the line FootJoy golf shoe, I would draw the Tour Alpha.  Looking down, they deliver the clean, classic look you expect from FootJoy.  From every other angle, you see sharp modern lines done with a high level of restraint.  As is their habit, FootJoy has infused a dash of color to pique visual interest in otherwise staid color schemes.

The laced FootJoy Tour Alpha is available in three colorways : white, black, and white/grey (shown).  With the BOA Closure, it’s offered in grey and white/grey with neon green accents.  Finally, the Dual BOA closure is available in only white/grey, but it’s slightly different than the laced version.

Sliding into the FootJoy Tour Alpha for the first time, I equated them to a firm handshake .  They’re not trying to squeeze the life out of you, but they want their presence known a bit.  Despite their athletic look, the Tour Alpha is a leather shoe, so it is likely to get a bit more supple with wear.

As I wore them more, I found that the Tour Alpha sets a definite boundary around your foot .  Within those limits, your foot has ample room to move.  Notably, I found the toe box to be more spacious than expected.  However, those boundaries are hard limits with a lot of structure and support.

footjoy tour alpha wide

Underfoot, FootJoy employs an OrthoLite EcoPlush Fit-Bed for cushioning.  The advantage of OrthoLite is that it does not “set,” so the cushioning remains the same round after round .  Meeker made particular note of how comfortable the cushioning is, and I enjoyed its “just right” firmness.

In terms of sizing, I found the Tour Alpha to fit well in my normal size 13.  Matt Meeker found a slightly better fit in a 9 compared to his usual 9.5.  This could be due to FootJoy’s use of the Laser Plus Last which is slightly roomier , especially through the toe .

Performance

Stability is the focus of the FootJoy Tour Alpha, and it absolutely delivers there.  The replaceable spikes are set wide to create a powerful, secure foundation for your swing .  For traction and anchoring to the ground, there may be shoes that equal the Tour Alpha, but I can’t think of one that surpasses it.

Of course, the sole is only the first part of creating a stable shoe.  If your foot isn’t secured inside the shoe, all the traction in the world doesn’t matter.  FootJoy keeps your foot locked in with a fitted, 3D molded heel and lateral stability elements.  In all the swings I took in the Tour Alpha, I never once slipped, got “outside” my feet, or even thought about my footwork .  These shoes 100% deliver on their claims of stability.

For all their virtues, it should be noted that the Tour Alpha is not for everyone.  The heel of these shoes is fairly tall – the norm for FootJoy – so those seeking “natural motion” shoes may be uncomfortable.  Also, the sole is very rigid .  If you’re coming from a more mobile shoe, you might feel fatigue or discomfort until you adapt.

As noted earlier, the FootJoy Tour Alpha comes in three different closure systems .  Matt Meeker and I tested the conventional laced version ($189).  There is also a lace-free BOA Closure ($219) with the dial on heel.  Finally, there is a Dual Boa version ($249) with one dial on the heel and another on the outside of the foot.

The FootJoy Tour Alpha is not the shoe you’re going to wear to the grocery store; it’s the shoe you’re going to wear to bomb it down every fairway without fear.  If you put a premium on stability and traction, look no further.  The Tour Alpha should be your go to for 2022.

When will this shoe be available?

' src=

It’s on FootJoy’s website right now.

' src=

Maybe this is what you were getting at, Matt, but geez, the soles of these shoes look so thick that my feet are a good inch — or more from the ground. Seems like they are 180 degree difference from the TRUEs that you always loved.

' src=

Had been wearing Ecco shoes for a few seasons and wanted to go back to a more stable shoe. Bought the single BOA version and love them. Comfortable and stable for the entire round. Feel like I have a much more solid ground connection. No need for custom insole, feels great all day.

' src=

I got a pair of these and I love them. Very comfortable and the soles give my feet the support I need

' src=

How can I get one –size (6.5 wide) or (6.0 wide). You make it always starting from SIZE 7.0.

' src=

Loved these shoes but I say a durability issue after 4 rounds the side of my shoes are blowing out.

' src=

Worst shoe of the footjoy range I’ve worn sore heels toes

' src=

These shoes are also uncomfortably heavy. Great fit just much heavier than any shoe I have previously worn

Joel Tadman tests the FootJoy Tour Alpha on the course at West Hill Golf Club

The Tour Alpha becomes FootJoy’s premier performance shoe for golfers seeking the ultimate in grip and stability. As a FootJoy Tour X shoe wearer last year, the shoe that this replaces, we were keen to see how it stacked up.

Visually, it looks packed full of technology, especially around the heel area but when you pick up the Tour Alpha it feels surprisingly light for a performance cleated shoe. Slide your foot in and the comfort is immediate - the padding around the ankle and underfoot is substantial enough to take away the pressure when walking, but not too soft where walking 18 holes would feel like hard work.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Shoe testing

The fit is also worth mentioning - in the correct size (we often come down half a size in FootJoy golf shoes ) the fit is snug and really encapsulates the foot evenly without pinching in any areas. As a result you feel completely locked in, like the shoe is an extension of your foot, which sets you up for powerful swings with control.

Visually, this shoe is on point. There’s lots going on in the rear but when you’re wearing them, looking down the shoe looks clean and classic. With the cleats being positioned so close to the perimeter of the outsole, the pods that house them do stick out slightly but it’s not enough to distract you or put you off wearing them.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Shoe top view

Plus the performance benefits outweigh any negatives visually, because this shoe really stands out from the crowd as one of the best golf shoes of this year. The connection with the ground you forge with Tour Alpha is so obviously strong, it gives you the confidence and ability to swing full tilt in the knowledge that your feet will stay locked in position. Much of this comes down to the clever design of the outsole, with nine cleats scattered around the edge and lots of quite sharp smaller nubs in between getting down into the ground with ease.

The heel especially feels very well cupped, which certainly seemed to help us manage aggressive weight transfer in the downswing. In fact, anyone that requires more support from their shoe will really enjoy and benefit from the structure that the Tour Alpha is able to provide.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Shoe outsole

Despite all this stability and support, it’s a comfortable shoe to walk in thanks in part to the thicker Ortholite Impressions FitBed. At no point did our feet feel fatigued - our little toe started to rub a little towards the end of the round but that aside, the user experience was flawless.

From a practical perspective, the uppers wipe clean and the loop at the back of the heel allows you to hang or carry them more easily while the waterproof protection kept our feet bone dry during testing, even in damp conditions.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

George Stead

Golf shoes come in all shapes in sizes these days, however every avid golfer needs that pair of shoes. The pair that you rely upon most when the going gets tough. Whether it's tricky conditions, a comp that you really care about, a match with some cash on the line - you need the best performance possible from your kicks. The FootJoy Tour Alpha promises to be just that shoe for 2022.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

I tested this new performance offering from FootJoy in wet, wintery conditions over two rounds of golf. I played at both Stockport Golf Club and the Marriot Worsley in Manchester.

The rain was well an truly pouring during testing on both occasions, not great for my golf game but great for testing golf shoes that promised in a lot in different departments.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

The main 'buzz term' that FootJoy are using with the Tour Alpha shoes is 'Power Reimagined' . In a golf-tech-jargon kind of way, this means that the Tour Alpha is engineered from the ground up to deliver stability and outstanding performance. From the outset it's clear that these elements were the number one priority for FJ's R&D team when creating this shoe.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

They are claiming to have achieved this through innovations in a number of different areas.

The ultimate in traction is said to be achieved through molded traction elements and Pulsar LP cleats by Softspikes that will FootJoy claim offers "unparalleled traction and stability in every playing condition and on every playing surface."

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

A new OPS system (which stands for Optimised Performance Stabiliser), made up of the external 3D molded heel counter, A-Frame and the lateral clip are there to lock the golfer in allowing you to swing hard and fast without any worries.

The Tour Alpha is also said to offer a balance of cushioning and stability in the right areas through a TruFit System and Dual-Durometer FTF+ Foam midsole .

As you'd expect from a premium FootJoy shoe, the upper feature ChromoSkinTM leather which is a supple, lightweight, durable and (thankfully during my testing) 100% waterproof.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

Last but certainly not least in the footwear department, comfort is said to be delivered through a Golfalot favourite - the OrthoLite ImpressionsTM FitBed which provides immediate step-in comfort and cleverly molds to the shape of your foot over time for truly custom comfort.

If you're really into your tech and you're a fan of BOA also, then you're in luck with the Tour Alpha it also comes available in both BOA and Double BOA.

I think that's enough footwear technology for one review, let's get into what I really thought.

The Tour Alpha looks as exactly as you'd expect it to. It's standard, modern-day FJ - it's inoffensive and looks like a golf shoe should in 2022. It's modern, sporty, techy, contemporary, sleek but in my opinion a little safe in it's overall design. Like I said it's very FootJoy.

To me it just screams Kevin Kisner, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Webb Simpson, that type of golfer...

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

In comparison to other FootJoy shoes in this 'performance' department in recent years: it looks much better than the FootJoy Fury, , it's similar to the FootJoy Tour-S but in my opinion not quite as smart as FootJoy Tour-X from 2021.

There’s lots going on visually in the heel of the shoe but when you’re wearing them, from above - the toe area looked clean and sleek. This was despite the slight annoyance of pods that hold the softspikes sticking out on the sides. Don't be put off here however - if anything it's good piece of mind that your getting that extra stability.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

The Tour Alpha it will hit the mark with plenty of golfers, but I wouldn't say people are going to love it aesthetically, they're not the shoe to either make or break an outfit in my opinion.

Throughout both of my tests of the Tour Alpha - comfort was never an issue for me. The leather upper was supple and hugged the top of my foot without every being an issue.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

As I first discovered in my review of the FootJoy Fury golf shoes (which I thought looked terrible but were some of the comfiest shoes I've ever worn), the OrthoLite Impressions FitBed is really something to behold in a golf shoe. Similar to Boost foam in the Adidas Tour 360 22 golf shoes the OrthoLite Insole is just super-comfy over 18 holes underneath the foot.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

If I was to give the FJ Tour Alpha one criticism in the comfort department, it would be that the traction plate on the bottom of the shoe is very hard. When combined with the many cleats and lugs, I felt that when walking on harder surfaces ate times, was almost wearing a pair of football boots. This may just be because at Marriot Worsley a lot of the course paths there are tarmacked, so this was exaggerated during my testing. If your course is similar, it's certainly something to look out for.

Performance

As usual with FootJoy shoes of this kind, anything that you could find to dislike visually, the chances are it will be outweighed by the performance.

This is a shoe that really scores high in the performance department. Every aspect of the shoe has been built for stability, traction, security and comfort in all the right areas. The build quality is extremely high and you can see that when first pulling the shoes out of the box - they feel solid and trustworthy. The exact opposite of my golf game.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

During the golf swing, you really have nothing to fear on multiple types of terrain - and trust me I found them. I had a great connection with the turf thanks to the Tour Alpha therefore I had confidence that swinging hard would not leave me losing my footing.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

On the downswing in particular, the OPS heel design no doubt kept me locked in. I couldn't help think that Bryson DeChambeau and his heel-swivelling-antics could benefit from a pair of Tour Alpha's. If you're looking for more support in this area, look no further - you'll find it here.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

The Tour Alpha's outsole design is one of the best I have tested in my time at Golfalot. FootJoy haven't left a stone unturned and your golf game will benefit from that.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Verdict

At first glance, I feared this was just another highly priced, tech-packed FootJoy shoe to add to the list. After testing, particularly in the tough conditions that I was doing so in, I was very impressed.

Yes visually they're not going to change the world, and you may not look like the coolest kid on the course, but you'll give yourself every chance of playing like him. On top of that, your feet will be comfy and in the rain - dry too.

The Tour Alpha is without doubt another great golf shoe from market leaders FootJoy.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Golf Shoe Review

Who Are They Aimed At?

The avid-golfer. The trooper - the one who's playing in all conditions. The hard and fast swinger - the one who's knocking it out there over 290 yards. The substance over style golfer. If Scottie Scheffler wore FJ, I reckon his funky footwork could do with a pair of FootJoy Tour Alpha kicks.

Would I Use Them?

Yes, I'd play golf in the FootJoy Tour Alpha again, without a doubt. I think if I had the choice of colourway again though I'd go for black as these are the short or performance shoe I would wear in the winter months.

FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA Golf Shoe Review

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into  Most Wanted Tests  or  Buyer’s Guides .  You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

The FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA (pictured) is a supremely comfortable golf shoe; ideal for walking the course.

What We Tried

FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA — the single-BOA version of FootJoy’s 2022 Most Wanted-winning flagship golf shoe. I say “single” because there’s also a dual-BOA (double “not for suckers”) version that I’ll be trying when (and if) FJ can wrangle some inventory.

Your Tour360 22 BOA Tester

Tony Covey. Self-described BOA-enthusiast with slightly wide feet. While not a fanboy by any means, I appreciate that when FootJoy makes a shoe, it makes it in wide (and often extra-wide). That’s called serving the golfer. Others should take note.

footjoy tour alpha wide

About the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA

Unlike my previous We Tried It Shoe review , there’s no confusion here. The FootJoy Tour Alpha is an unapologetically spiked shoe. We’re not trying to go from the office to the course or any of that stuff. We’re just looking to maximize performance on the golf course. Crazy, right? Ideally, that means all-terrain stability, traction and comfort.

As noted, the Foot Joy Tour Alpha was this year’s Most Wanted winner in the spiked category . That’s significant because FootJoy hasn’t typically finished near the top of the rankings but, with the Tour Alpha, FootJoy managed to unseat perennial winner adidas. As I said, I tend to gravitate to FootJoy because of the availability of wide sizes anyway but a Most Wanted win … yeah, color me extra super curious.

The Tour Alpha BOA is available in two colorways (white/grey and charcoal/grey). The charcoal grey is unique to the BOA offering while all white and all black are available in the laced offering only. That part is kinda lame but the upside is that FootJoy offers a full complement of sizes in the BOA option.

As is the FootJoy way, there is a $30 upcharge for the BOA version of the Tour Alpha ($219.99, up from $189.99 in the laced version). Either way you still get the 2-year waterproof guarantee, but for some, the upcharge will be reason enough to stick with laces.

footjoy tour alpha wide

BOA Fit System

As I mentioned when I tried the adidas Tour360 22 BOA, there are a few different versions of the BOA fit system on the market. Some manufacturers have negotiated exclusive rights to one system or another and even the placement of the BOA dial can be proprietary.

The FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA leverages a micro-adjustable performance fit system. However, unlike the Li2 dial found on the adidas Tour360 22 BOA, it only micro-adjusts tighter. If you inadvertently crank your way past comfortable, you can’t click your way back. It’s a full release, re-click kind of situation. That’s still about 50 times faster than tying laces.

FootJoy enjoys exclusive rights to the heel-mounted position for the BOA dial so, as with other not-for-suckers versions of FootJoy shoes, that’s where you’ll find it on the Tour Alpha.

A closeup of the BOA Fit Dial on the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA golf shoe.

FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA Tech

The FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA tech story is pretty straightforward. In addition to the BOA fitting system, you’ve got Pulsar LP spikes, a proprietary OPS (optimized performance stabilizer) stability system and some other stuff designed to provide a proper fit and, ultimately, comfort. While mesh and pleather are all the rage in shoe design right now, the Tour Alpha BOA features a waterproof ChromoSkin leather upper from Pittards.

A Quick Note About Style

From a style perspective, the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA isn’t entirely dissimilar from the adidas Tour360 22 BOA. Specifically, I’m talking about the flap that covers where the tongue and laces would otherwise be. I suppose I understand why some think it looks goofy but evolution has a cost. One day, this will be what the majority of golf shoes look like and, frankly, it’s a small price to pay for not having to make bunny ears out of strings like a sucker.

The revolution is coming. Best to get on board now.

Slipping them on

While there’s inarguably a modern slant to the styling of the FootJoy Tour Alpha (the BOA fit system all but mandates that), kudos to FootJoy for recognizing that getting your foot into a shoe shouldn’t be that difficult. None of that sockliner shoehorn and Vaseline (OK, maybe not Vaseline) nonsense here. You know how easy it feels to slide your shoes on after three games in rented bowling shoes? It’s that easy. Regular shoe easy.

footjoy tour alpha wide

FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA Comfort and Fit

If you missed my theories on golf shoe fit and comfort, I’ll refer you to my adidas Tour360 22 BOA review . As it relates to the FootJoy Tour Alpha, comfort was great out of the box—so much so that I disregarded my rule about new shoes and decided to walk 18 without a backup pair in the bag. I ain’t scared.

Walking up my first hill, I was left with no reservations about the five-mile hike ahead.

That’s big picture stuff but there is some nuance here. As mentioned, I’m just barely a wide-foot guy so I can sometimes get away with standard-width shoes, particularly when they’re built on a slightly wide last. My initial impression is that, by wide shoe standards, the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA runs a little wider still. I own five other pairs of wide-sized FootJoy shoes and the Tour Alpha is the widest of the lot.

I’ve come to realize that my left foot is slightly chubbier than my right. With the Tour Alpha BOA, I felt like the fit on my left foot was perfect while the right was a little too wide. Unfortunately, shoes are sold in pairs without any sort of a la carte selection available. Stomping around in the FootJoy Tour Alpha left me wondering if, in this particular model, my ideal fit might be standard width on the right and wide on the left.

C’mon, FootJoy, can we make this kind of fitting option happen?

When it comes to sizing, for me, anyway, the Tour Alpha BOA is a sizing tweener. It is worth noting that there’s a surprising amount of crank in the BOA dial , so while the right shoe, in particular, definitely felt big, I was able to click my way to a stable fit.

An image showing the BOA Fit dial, heel counter and frame on the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA.

Walking 18 with the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA

When it comes to golf shoe comfort, I’m primarily concerned about blisters on the heel. For sure, there are a lot of areas where ill-fitting or poorly designed shoes can pinch, rub and, ultimately maim but I feel like the heel is the most vulnerable.

Generally speaking, I found the Tour Alpha comfortable in the heel … mostly. My one minor gripe is that the heel cup perhaps sits slightly high. I found that I needed to yank my low-cut socks up a bit to provide coverage and protection. No big deal as any issues can be mitigated by marginally higher socks.

As my round progressed, I did note some soreness on the outside of the ball of my right foot only. While it was far from debilitating, it did linger and progress throughout the round. I probably could have walked another 18 and been none the worse for it but it’s not ideal. I suspect it may be a sizing issue as there were no issues at all with my left foot.

As far as performance goes, the Tour Alpha is a stable shoe and, while that often means a thick rigid sole, I never felt like I was wearing lifts or walking in clogs. Traction and stability were generally excellent.

Performance is excellent as advertised . That’s probably the most important thing.

A closeup of the Pulsar LP cleats on the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA.

FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA – Takeaway

So where does that leave us?

I like the FootJoy Tour Alpha BOA but I’m not sure I love it. Well, I love it on my left foot. The right? The jury is still out.

Next time out, I’ll wear thicker wool socks instead of light to midweight cotton (I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy better socks, anyway) and see how it goes. I’ll let you know.

The upside here is that I don’t need to worry about breaking them in. It’s all about seeing if there’s a simple fix for my right foot.

Once again, fingers crossed.

Maybe someday Footjoy will make some non-pointy-toed shoes. Feet are meant to be pointy.

Own a pair After 5 rounds ripped out insoles and put in orthotics insoles Otherwise an outstanding shoe

I’ll never wear another golf shoe again. I walk 4 to 5 times a week and at a “lite” 215lbs I need comfort. I am wearing On Trail shoes and could not be happier with the comfort, stability, and traction….

I just stocked up on several pairs of an Adidas model. Lightweight, comfortable. Now they’re not waterproof, but I’m fine with that because I don’t play in the morning dew, and, I have other waterproof shoes. Under $50 each. Which means I bought 4 of them for the price of this shoe. For me, it’s hard to beat those economics.

Read the article, but no mention of how much it weighs. I was a solid Footjoy/BOA guy for over a decade, but they seem to have gotten heavier over the years. I was hooked on the Footjoy BOA DNA shoes. But, they moved on to newer styles and the shoes have gotten less comfortable and heavier. That led me to try Skechers Torque Twist/BOA and I’ve never looked back. Sorry FJ, but you did it to yourselves.

On my scale, a size 9.5 wide weighs just under 1..15 lbs.

I agree this shoe does run a little wider than other FJ products. I found the shoe to be extremely stable as expected but did note that the feeling of walking is completely different to both my Pro Sl carbons and Premieres. Great shoe in the wet but think I will tend more to the others when the ground firms up here in Australia

I’ve been a Footjoy wearer for 20 years. Never even looked at another brand, because there was no need, but the season I’ve bought 2 pairs and the comfort levels have been horrid. They’ve been more worried about the ‘rebound sole’ gimmick rather then comfort in the light weight models. Both pairs are now in the garage – I’ve bought a different brand that are more like a ‘old’ Footjoy. Sorry Footjoy – I don’t need distance out of the sole of my shoe. No more.

I’m a wide-foot guy, presently rocking the Adidas Tour360 BOA. I checked out the FootJoy Tour Alphas the last time I was at Golf Galaxy and wasn’t impressed. The shoe looked really long and narrow. Maybe just long… like there would be too much shoe sticking out past where my toes ended. They didn’t have my size so I didn’t get a chance try them on and see if they felt like they looked.

I own a pair and find them ok for riding but they don’t work for me when I walk 18. I much prefer the Pro Premire lace up as it is more stable and comfortable for my 6’4″ large body.

I have been FJ BOA user for 20 years. Yes, i think they have gotten heavier. I have tried other brands. The newest Footjoy BOA are too wide for me. And i have learned moving down from 8.5 to 8 size., along with top quality insole has tightened them up. Too, i have removed some of the screw-in spikes.on sole . Travels smoother and lost no stability. Particularly i love the wrap-over top design that is very comfortable, tightens evenly, and easier to keep clean. I play over 100 rounds a year, mix of walking and cart. My garmin watch tells ne I do 4-5 miles walking either way, depending upon the course . My home course is very hilly and uneven. mountains of Pennsylvania

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

footjoy tour alpha wide

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
