We are proud of our brand’s legacy, but as both tourism and Saskatoon evolve, it’s time we do, too.

Why rebrand?

Our brand identity includes a new name, logo, colours, symbols, and font designed to unify, differentiate, and inspire. Despite these changes, our mandate remains the same: we serve our community and our partners by telling the stories of Saskatoon and promoting our city on national and global stages.

We’ve given considerable thought to this process. More than two years of community conversations have helped to shape our transformation; about who we are and how best to celebrate our people, this land, and the essence of Saskatoon.

This is a brand that was created for our community and our partners.

Our rebrand is about more than looks. It’s an invitation to discover , to delight in the sights and sounds of Saskatoon that make it such a wonderful place to visit, live, work, study, and play.

Our Brand Identity

The act of discovery is central to the way we work and our way of life. You’ll find it in all aspects of our new brand.

Our logo was purposefully created to reflect the spirit of Treaty 6. The icon, wordmark, and Cree syllabics honour our commitment to restoration, regeneration, and reconciliation.

Created by local artist Christine Marie, a woman of Métis and Filipino roots, our new icon is a visual reminder that we are all treaty people, crossing bridges together in the land of the living skies. 

“Establishing and building relationships helps us get one step closer to reconciliation. This is why I wanted to create this logo with the handshake as the foundation—treaties were signed and sealed with a handshake.” — Christine Marie

Our wordmark is an invitation to discover and experience Saskatoon. A playful blend of upper and lowercase letters represents the unexpected surprises that often accompany discovery. 

Cree Syllabics

As an organization, we are accountable to both the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Our accountabilities reflect in both our brand and our actions. 

Working closely with the seven Chiefs and Tribal Chief of the Saskatoon Tribal Council, we sought and received consent to incorporate the Cree syllabics for “discovery.” Cree is the most widely spoken Indigenous language in our region, but it is not the only one: in reaffirming our relations with Indigenous peoples, we acknowledge these lands are also the traditional hunting grounds of the Métis, and a gathering place for both Dakota and Nakota Sioux.  

These syllabics invite locals and visitors to place themselves in this traditional territory.

Our Brand Symbols

Our brand identity includes 10 symbols that draw inspiration from the cultures, spaces, structures, landscapes, and people in our city. From wheat and riverside buildings to bridges, tipis, and the Métis sash, each symbol is significant in its own right, working together to create a system that is characteristically Saskatoon.

Our Typography

Our primary typeface is Niveau Grotesk. Representative of our people, the font is accessible yet expressive, playful yet professional, and soft yet bold.

As the South Saskatchewan River winds through the city, Saskatoon is buzzing with an infusion of new restaurants, bars, breweries, and attractions. Locals who had once left to attend school or experience big cities like Vancouver and Toronto have moved back, bringing with them a new sense of pride.

It’s really quite beautiful, with some calling Saskatoon the “Paris of the Prairies”. Multiple bridges cross the wide river, while an 80-km trail provides a scenic way to take it all in while walking, jogging, or biking. Those into watersports can grab their paddleboard, kayak, or canoe, and go down the river for a scenic soft adventure. Even in the winter, people can be seen on bikes or kick-sleds – a new activity to the area.

Saskatoon surprised us in many ways. Not only is there so much to do and see, but the uniqueness of the new restaurants, shops, breweries, and pubs is truly awesome. The Hollows, for example, converted a historic Chinese restaurant into a modern-day contemporary restaurant focused on natural and seasonal products. Stepping inside is like stepping into the 1970s. Almost all of it has been kept intact. Then there’s Ayden Kitchen and Bar, which is owned by the winner of Canada’s top chef, serving up an incredible array of food and drink. One of the newest trendy spots for satisfying the sweet tooth is Darkside Donuts, which names its donuts after local neighbourhoods and even provides an online live feed of what’s in stock. This is just a taste, figuratively and literally speaking, of what’s happening in Saskatoon. It’s alive, it’s bold, and the love for the city can be seen on almost every corner.

1. Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Now on its way to UNESCO World Heritage status, Wanuskewin Heritage Park is one of the coolest indigenous sites we’ve ever seen and one of the top Saskatoon attractions. Not only is it a great museum and cultural centre, but it’s also Canada’s longest-running archaeological dig site. This site dates back more than 6,000 years, which is more than double the age of the Egyptian pyramids. There are tons of events in the summer months and in the winter, you can go snowshoeing and enjoy outdoor bannock bakes.

2. Remai Modern Museum

Remai Modern is a new museum of modern and contemporary art in Saskatoon, offering a unique perspective on art and culture in the 21st century, with an eye on the future. There are many galleries, as well as a ping-pong room, but one of the most exciting is the world’s largest Picasso linocut collection. Even the architecture itself received an Award of Excellence from the Canadian Architect magazine.

3. Riverside District and Meewasin

If you’re looking to take a stroll, there’s no place more scenic than the beautiful river valley. Snaking its way through Saskatoon, the South Saskatchewan River provides a beautiful backdrop and a great place to go walking around while enjoying a hot summer day. This is one of the most popular outdoor Saskatoon activities and a good place to start is the area around the revitalized Riversdale neighbourhood, such as right in front of Remai Modern. You could also explore the Meewasin Trail , which lives in and outside of Saskatoon, on both sides of the river, and includes several sites and services to help you make the most of your adventures. Explore the natural habitat along the riverbank, discover culture at museums and interpretive sites, and take advantage of enhancements such as parks and canoe launches. While you don’t have to do the entire trail, it does run approximately 105 kilometres in length and features many great views.

4. The Stoked Centre

This might be the most “random” place we visited in Saskatoon. What started out as a garden center has now become an almost all-you-you-need stop. There are garden supplies, household items, dog grooming, a restaurant, and even an awesome Go-Kart track, arcade, and zip-line. Parents can go shopping while their kids play or the whole family can have some fun. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Saskatoon that are indoors, this is a really cool place to visit.

5. Skydive Saskatoon

If you’re looking for a really thrilling adventure, try jumping out of a plane at 11,000 feet with Skydive Saskatoon . This team is fun and welcoming, making you feel comfortable and safe. They’re located just 15 minutes from the city and offer a great way to not only see the prairie landscapes from the sky but then to fall towards them at 200 km/h. This is truly something you’ll never forget!

6. The Prairie Lily

If you’re looking for a relaxing way to see Saskatoon from the river, check out the Prairie Lily , an iconic river cruise that takes people down the South Saskatchewan River. They offer a variety of tours, including general 1-hour scenic tours, sunset tours, dinner tours, and more.

7. Go Paddle-Boarding

With the beautiful South Saskatchewan River meandering through the city, getting out on the water is one of the best ways to enjoy the summer months. Whether you choose to go paddle-boarding, kayaking, or canoeing, this is the best way to enjoy a day on the water while you admire the many views of this Northern city. There are many places to rent one of these, such as Escape Sports , or you can even join tours if you’d rather have a guide with you.

8. Western Development Museum

Ranked as the #1 thing to do in Saskatoon via TripAdvisor, you don’t want to miss a visit to the Western Development Museum . Take a journey back in time with exhibits like Boomtown, which focused on the booming economic activity of Saskatchewan at the turn of the century, and the Transportation Gallery, which includes a wide range of modes of transportation such as a 1938 Minneapolis Moline UDLX Comfortractor, a 1960 Plymouth Fury, a 1948 Chrysler Coupe, and an Ornithopter made by Ralph Vallevand of Elbow. There are also galleries on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation, Precious Metals, 100 Years of Saskatchewan History, the Cancer Bomb, and more.

9. Beaver Creek Conservation Area

If you’re looking to check out some wildlife, go for an easy hike, or feed some birds, consider going to Beaver Creek Conservation Area . This is a unique habitat for grassland birds and wildflowers. It is located where a prairie creek meets a prairie river. The active wildlife and scenery make it a great place to go for a stroll and there’s also an opportunity to feed cute little chickadees.

10. Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo

From meeting a cute little mob of meerkats to enjoying the antics of the cheeky Goeldi’s Monkeys, a trip to the Saskatoon Forestry Farm & Zoo is always a joy. Saskatchewan’s only CAZA-accredited zoo is home to many beautiful animals, including grizzly bears, pronghorn, red-tailed hawks, snowy owls, bald eagles, snow leopards, and more. There’s also the Orano Fun Zone playground, which is great for kids wanting to play like monkeys.

11. Black Fox Farm & Distillery

If you’re looking for a scenic place to visit just outside the city, where you can do everything from picking your own bouquet of flowers to sampling award-winning whiskey and gin, put Black Fox Farm & Distillery at the top of your bucket list. Even if you’re looking for a tasty lunch, they offer one of the best charcuterie boards we’ve ever had, with a delicious concoction of meats, cheeses, fruit and nuts.

However, the real draw here is the distillery. Black Fox is one of the few farm-to-still distilleries in North America and these grain farmers-turned-distillers grow 90% of what is in their products, from honey to haskap berries to pumpkin flowers, and more. This passion and combination of skills have earned them the Master award in World Whisky Masters and Gold in the Canadian Artisan Spirits Competition in 2021. It’s also a scenic location where you can enjoy a tour of the farm and pick your own flowers.

12. Saskatchewan Rush Lacrosse

Nobody rallies behind their sports teams more than Saskatchewan. While Regina is home to the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, Saskatoon is home to the Rush . Witness the energy at Sasktel Centre as up to 15,000 fans cheer on the three-time national lacrosse league champions. Lacrosse is Canada’s national summer sport and is a great way to spend an evening in Saskatchewan’s biggest city.

13. Saskatoon Farmers’ Market

Since 1975, the member-owned, non-profit cooperative Saskatoon Farmers’ Market has been connecting Saskatoon residents and visitors with the producers of high-quality and local agricultural products, baking, prepared food, crafts, and diverse goods. Open year-round on the weekends, make sure you check their website for updates as the vendor list changes seasonally.

14. Optimist Hill in the Winter

Optimist Hill is a new community-funded winter park that opened earlier this month. It offers tubing, skiing, a terrain park, free tobogganing, and snowboarding, all within the city.

15. Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink in the Winter

According to Flare magazine, the Meewasin Skating Rink is one of the most scenic skating rinks in Canada. It’s a great thing to do in the winter and the free skate rentals make this available to anyone.

17. Enjoy the Many Saskatoon Restaurants

If you’re looking for great places to eat in Saskatoon, you’re in luck. Saskatoon is home to one of the largest concentrations of restaurants in Canada per capita. We can’t list them all here but you can go deeper in our extensive guide to the best restaurants in Saskatoon .

Drift Sidewalk Cafe (breakfast)

Drift exemplifies the laid-back nature of the Riversdale district – fusing together a California/Portland vibe with the collaborative spirit of the neighbourhood. Drift Sidewalk Cafe and the Vista Lounge above is the perfect hot spot for grabbing your morning coffee and a breakfast crepe. It’s really one of the coolest buildings we’ve seen. There are hammocks to chill in. There’s a store for buying and renting outdoor gear. There’s an outdoor patio and there’s even a cool little outdoor patio if you feel like eating in a hot air balloon. You’ll see what we mean when you visit.

Park Cafe (breakfast)

Park Cafe is a quirky throwback diner located in the heart of the trendy Riversdale neighbourhood. This place is full of history and specializes in locally-sourced comfort food. They even smoke their own salmon and bacon in-house. This place is often packed so arrive early.

Baba’s Perogies (lunch)

With around 12-15% of Saskatoon’s population being of Ukrainian descent, Baba’s perogies, home to the only perogies drive-thru in the world, is a popular stop in the city. Perogies are made by hand, in-house, with up anywhere from 6,000 – 15,000 being made each day. Get the opportunity to see the perogy assembly line and taste an authentic Ukrainian meal.

Hearth (Supper)

Hearth brings to the table fresh and foraged food that is local to the Saskatoon area. After operating as a catering business for a number of years, the owners now bring unpretentious, thoughtful, ingredient-forward prairie cooking to a tucked-away neighbourhood spot. Not only is this one of Saskatoon’s best restaurants, but it’s also ranked as one of the best restaurants in Canada. The food is truly delicious and comes at a fair price considering the large portions. Plus, their new location is inside the Remai Modern art gallery!

Odd Couple (Supper)

This trendy father-son-owned restaurant serves high-quality classic Chinese/Vietnamese dishes and delicious cocktails. We especially loved the Ginger Beef, the Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Maple Thai Basil Pork Ribs, and the Thai Basil Gin Sour cocktail.

Ayden Kitchen and Bar (Supper)

Canada’s original top chef winner Dale Mackay creates homegrown and globally inspired comfort food paired with properly hand-crafted cocktails at their award-winning restaurant in downtown Saskatoon. As a cocktail lover, I was impressed with the drink menu. With sophisticated drink concoctions that would make even a connoisseur squeal in delight, this is a great place for a night out on the town.

Darkside Donuts (Sweets)

Saskatchewan’s newest sweet tooth is Darkside Donuts, which makes delicious donuts named after various Saskatoon neighbourhoods. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, this is the place to go.

Fable Ice Cream (Sweets)

Freshly made ice cream with organic milk and cane sugar, all created mostly by local farmers, makers, and producers. Salted Caramel, Milk Chocolate, Sweet Cream, Venn Coffee, Earl Grey Tea, Cereal Milk, Cookies & Cream, and more!

18. Visit a Brewery, Cidery, or Distillery

With more than 10 breweries, cideries, and distilleries, there’s no shortage of places to find deliciously crafted drinks . Whether you’re looking for a crisp pint of beer, a tasty glass of cider, or something a little stronger, you can find a wide range of options, all of which use locally-grown ingredients.

19. Take a Road Trip to Prince Albert National Park

Just two hours north of Saskatoon lies one of the crown jewels of Saskatchewan. Prince Albert National Park is a stunning slice of nature, featuring a boreal forest, beautiful Waskesiu Lake, the charming town of Waskesiu, and much more. It’s a great place to go camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking and boating, but you could also spend a weekend staying in one of the many accommodations, whisking away the nights under a stunning starlit sky. Waskesiu in the winter is also a great time to visit, as you can go dogsledding, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and more!

20. Spend a Weekend at Dakota Dunes Resort

Located just 30 minutes south of Saskatoon, Dakota Dunes Resort is packed with things to do, including a casino, a beautiful golf course, restaurants, and of course, the resort itself.

Located on traditional Whitecap Dakota Unceded Territory, nestled within a beautiful river setting and surrounded by gently rolling natural sand dunes, Dakota Dunes Resort is Saskatoon’s first full-service resort experience. This newly built 155-room resort is a tribute in design to its indigenous heritage with its angular window trims and exterior wood panels echoing the traditional tipi.

Spend a night or two, enjoy a delicious farm-to-table dinner at Moose Woods Home Fire Grill, or even rent an eBike to go for a ride around the trails.

21. Spend the Night

Saskatoon is full of hotels, ranging from budget to luxury. Some of the ones we’ve stayed at are the Park Town Hotel , which has a wonderful weekend breakfast buffet, and the new Alt Hotel , which is right across the street from the Remai Modern museum. Both hotels are next to the river and provide excellent views of the city, depending on your room. However, we also love the Best Western Plus East Side . It’s a little further from the core, but it has a wonderful free breakfast, a business centre, a pool with a waterslide, and a gym. It also offers free parking and modern-style rooms with beautiful old photos of Saskatoon.

What’s Next After Saskatoon?

Saskatoon is the biggest city in Saskatchewan and has really become one of our favourite cities in the country. It has this cool vibe that’s hard to explain. With so much young energy and entrepreneurship feeding into this small Northern city, there are so many cool things going on. From deliciously trendy restaurants to modern museums and outdoor adventure, Saskatoon is a great urban area to explore.

Music in the park during Jazz Festival, or Taste of Saskatchewan or Rock the River hold so many fun memories for me after all, Saskatoon is known as “Toon” (tune) “Town”!

Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Wanuskewin, which translates to ”gathering place”, has been a part of Saskatoon history for over 6000 years. Back then, it echoed with the sound of thundering bison and brought together the Indigenous People of the Northern Plains.

Today, visitors can relive the stories of the people who came here to hunt, gather and escape the harsh winter winds. As you stroll around the park, you’re sure to understand why this site is a place of deep spirituality.

Saskatoon Farmers’ Market

Since 1975, Saskatoon Farmers’ Market has brought local produce to residents and visitors of Saskatoon. Everything here is made, baked, gathered, or grown by local vendors, so the high quality of the goods you can buy is guaranteed.

As you make your way around the stalls, you’ll find stalls selling baked goods, hand-crafted souvenirs, fresh fruit and vegetables, local agricultural products, and much more.

Remai Modern Museum

Opened in October 2017, the Remai Modern Museum showcases a combination of modern and contemporary art in a beautifully unique setting. The art museum is a gathering place for culture and community and aims to show Saskatoon as a growing city.

Besides the 11 gallery spaces each with different art collections, there’s a 150-seat theatre, an on-site restaurant, and outdoor terraces with beautiful views of the sprawling South Saskatchewan River.

At the Western Development Museum, you’ll discover Saskatchewan’s collective heritage spanning hundreds of years. Through exhibits, collections, and unique features, the museum depicts the province’s sense of place and how the legacy of the past is how to build the future.

The museum holds over 75,000 artifacts for the people of Saskatchewan (and its visitors) to enjoy. These artifacts, from archival and photographic material to pins and locomotives, touch on all aspects of life in the province.

Ukrainian Museum of Canada

The Ukrainian Museum of Canada aims to preserve and display artifacts that depict the Ukrainian heritage and its contributions to Canada as a whole. Inside the museum, you’ll find a diverse collection of artifacts varying from linens to books to photographs.

There are a plethora of other treasures to see, all collected from the first, second, and third waves of Ukrainian immigrants to Canada. You’ll see textiles (shirts, embroidery, and weavings), religious items, impressive wooden carvings, and thousands of other Ukrainian items showcased too.

University of Saskatchewan

Located on Treaty 6 territory, The University of Saskatchewan is one of Canada’s best universities. However, for those who aren’t there to study, it’s a great addition to any Saskatoon itinerary.

It’s the best place to marvel at Collegiate Gothic-style architecture, and many of the buildings are made from native limestone mined near the campus. Such structures have helped create a signature architectural style seen in Saskatoon.

Stroll the campus’ tree-lined walkways, see historical buildings, and perhaps stop for a picnic.

Taste of Saskatchewan Festival

The Taste of Saskatchewan Festival offers just that – your chance to taste the very best food the province has to offer. The festival features 31 of Saskatoon’s best restaurants, all serving their favorite dishes in the beautiful setting of Kiwanis Park.

Meewasin Valley Trail

Head on an outdoor adventure as you take to the Meewasin Valley Trail. You’ll be able to explore natural habitats alongside the riverbank, explore parks, go canoeing or discover more about the culture and the history of the area at museums along the way.

There are many must-see sites and parks along the Meewasin Trail. It runs for 90km along both sides of the river, meandering under bridges, through picturesque natural areas and stunning landscapes.

Whether you cycle, walk or jog the trail is up to you, whichever way you choose will be equally as beautiful.

Beaver Creek Conservation Area

Beaver Creek Conservation Area is the perfect place for a day hike or trip with the family. It’s part of the above-mentioned Meewasin Valley Trail and is a beautiful nature reserve with four gorgeous trails to explore in any season.

There’s a sheltered creek and charming river valley to see, plus an abundance of wildlife in the area; you can see anything from deers to foxes to birds. In winter, don a pair of cross-country skis and hit the snow-covered groomed trails.

Go shopping

There are never-ending opportunities for shopping in Saskatoon. Whether you want to head to big-brand names or shop at quirkier independent stores, Saskatoon is quickly getting a reputation for its quality shopping outlets.

There are six different shopping malls spread across the city, meaning your chance to find a bargain or grab a new outfit is never far away. The trendy Broadway Avenue district is the place to find niche shops selling eclectic hand-crafted gifts, local cheeses, pottery, and much more.

Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival

Over 85,000 music fans head to the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival each year, which has grown from its modest beginnings in 1987 to become one of the province’s premier cultural events. With up to 160 performances each year, the festival is one of the largest of its kind in all of Canada.

The internationally renowned festival is the place to listen to jazz music as well as learn all about the genre, plus there’s a variety of educational experiences on offer to help developing musicians.

Saskatchewan Railway Museum

Located in southwest Saskatoon, the Saskatchewan Railway Museum boasts an impressive array of railway buildings, railcars, and railway memorabilia spanning a vast history.

The museum has an on-site interpretative center, also known as the KOPKO CENTRE, named after Mike and Margaret Kopko. The center houses a number of interesting items, all depicting the history of the railway.

You can also view restorations, and the Grand Truck Pacific structure, with one of the best views of the museum.

Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink

Situated inside the charming Kiwanis Memorial Park, the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink brags a premier location alongside the South Saskatchewan River and the iconic Bessborough Hotel. The skating rink opens to visitors each winter and was once voted the best outdoor skating rink in Canada.

Rent a pair of skates, take to the ice and try your hand at skating. There are a cozy warm-up shelter and an outdoor fire pit too; there’s no better way to spend a winter’s day in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan Rush Lacrosse

The Saskatchewan Rush Lacrosse team is a professional indoor lacrosse team and one of the province’s finest exports. Champions in 2016, the club play their games at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, and their matches are worth a watch!

If you’re lucky enough to be in town when they’re playing, head to the stadium to see them in action. Soak up the atmosphere, mingle with the friendly Saskatoon locals, and see the team (hopefully!) live up to their winning titles.

21 Fun Saskatoon Activities – A City of Bridges Weekend

(Updated June 2021) Tilting his head sideways, with a look typically saved for a confused golden retriever, an acquaintance listens to our Saskatoon activities planned for a weekend getaway. Too polite to ask why we would leave the grandeur of our nearby Canadian Rockies for the Saskatchewan prairies, his puzzled gaze persists. Sharing that 40 years ago, we love struck teenagers, met in the agricultural heartland of Canada’s prairies, his head finds a more normal angle, as he nods in understanding.

With the yellows and oranges of autumn 1979 exploding around us, hand in hand we wander under stoic arches of  bridges, on pathways lining the South Saskatchewan River. From those days of giggly hand holding, possibilities of what to do in Saskatoon have blossomed like the city itself.  

Saskatoon, one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, has shaken off its little town on the prairies image, to become a sought-after tourist destination. The sweet ‘City of Bridges,’ has grown into a thriving urban centre, brimming with art, culture and culinary wonders. Yet on our return we find the friendly, small town vibe as it was all those years ago.

Stay overnight in a castle

Spending four years in Saskatoon, much of it on a student budget, our walks near the Bessborough Hotel made for inexpensive date nights. One of Canada’s grand railway hotels, the castle became a meeting spot. 

The Bessborough is the classic of all Saskatoon hotels

The historic hotel, which opened in 1935, was designed in a Châteauesque style with inspiration drawn from the castles of Bavaria. With its rounded turrets and bulging  oriel windows  one can imagine princesses gazing longingly over the river below. Returning 40 years later and staying in the castle of our dreams, we can attest that the Bessborough has some of the best views in Saskatoon.

Art, agriculture and time travel

In the midst of some of the best Canadian farmland, it is not surprising that the University began as an agricultural college. Founded in 1907, the sprawling green campus sits on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River. From the paths along the river, extraordinary views of Saskatoon burst forth.

Lesser known of the Saskatoon activities, the University of Saskatchewan also houses several art galleries. The Kenderdine Art Gallery is home to the university’s permanent collection and local art is on display at St. Thomas Moore Gallery. At the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, the university’s own art students are showcased.

Take a walk back in time at the Saskatoon Western Development Museum. With nearly 80,000 artifacts it is the largest human history museum in Saskatchewan.

Broadway Theatre – Canada’s one of a kind

Walking down the bustling and revitalized Broadway Avenue, the theatre stoically stands as it has for decades. It is Canada’s only community owned, non profit cinema specializing in classic or notably older films. Opening in 1946, this City of Saskatoon landmark has a varied history from post World War II entertainment destination to adult films to live performances. In 1993 after the Broadway theatre shut its doors, a public fundraising drive saved the icon. Designated a municipal heritage property it is a Saskatoon story in itself.

Cruising on the Prairie Lily

On the gentle waters of the South Saskatchewan River, the Prairie Lily Riverboat cruises under the many bridges, for which Saskatoon is famous for. From May to October, one-hour boat journeys allow passengers to take in the natural beauty of the Meewasin Valley. As the city watches itself, from each bank of the river, a ride on the Prairie Lily gives the best vantage point of all. 

Walk back in time at Wanuskewin

As crickets sing their welcoming son, a sense of peace envelopes visitors on winding trails dotted with purple splashes of wild smooth asters on the land of ancient peoples. The whispering of native prairie grasses joins the cricket chorus. Menthol aromas of fall sage waft through the air. A fellow visitor to the short listed UNESCO world heritage site, recalls his grandfather boiling the plant to treat colds when he was a child.

For as long as 6000 years Indigenous peoples inhabited this now Canadian National Historic Site. Wanuskewin Heritage Park is Canada’s longest running archaeological dig site. Besides exploring the site sitting above Opimihaw Creek and the South Saskatchewan River, educational displays and classes run at the visitor centre. Tipi sleepovers and decadent dinners by moonlight, featuring foods native to the area, are served.

All right the bees may not be at your table, but they are on the rooftop. When Calories opened as a coffee shop next door to the Broadway Theatre, the area was far from trendy. Farm to table did not roll off the tongues of food critics or in descriptions of Saskatoon restaurants. Long before it was cool to do so, Calories insisted on fresh, real and local food. Hard to get your honey more local than one floor up.

Water activities in Saskatoon 

The idea of standing up on a board on a river and paddling makes me want to fall immediately. However, the river in Saskatoon is a welcoming calm, more reminiscent of a lake than a rapid-filled waterway. Vibrantly coloured kayaks and canoes dot the South Saskatchewan River. On our September weekend trip one of the main Saskatoon attractions is the stand up paddleboard races. Our beginner status in the sport does not have us ready for racing. Perhaps next time we will take a river tour via paddleboard .

Saskatoon events and festival fun

On the weekend we visit the city of our youth, no less than three festivals are taking place. Whether it be food, music, sports, theatre, summer or winter, Saskatoon festivals appear to be the cool thing to do. Wandering through the Broadway Street Fair we smile seeing the area we avoided decades before now overflowing with families of all ages. 

Organic chocolate at Saskatoon Farmer’s Market

Be warned it is addictive. How anything that is vegan friendly, has no dairy, no nuts, no gluten nor refined sugar or artificial flavour can taste so ridiculously scrumptious I have no idea. I do know that Cranberry & Sea Salt and I left Saskatoon as best friends. As the name might suggest you can find this tasty treat at the year round Saskatoon Farmer’s Market . Those girls have been so successful, (no wonder), they have opened a store called simply Chocolate .  

See a Chinese pagoda

As a gift to the city, Saskatoon’s Chinese community donated a pagoda for all to enjoy in Victoria Park overlooking the river. Looking like a gazebo to North Americans, in Chinese culture a zhongshan ting is a place where all gather for fellowship and worship. 

Hang out with Picasso at Remai Modern

Walking into the architectural wonder of the Remai Modern art museum, on the banks of the South Saskatchewan, it is clear that this is not the Saskatoon from our youth. In an area we once feared to tread, the Riverwalk area has transformed into a cultural hub. The centerpiece being the Remai Modern, the largest art gallery in Saskatchewan. Opened in 2017, it houses the largest collection of Picasso linocuts in the world. 

The Hollows consolidates at Primal

With its vintage pink rose plates and water glasses adorned with wheat sheaves I feel as though I have stepped into a small-town cafe with my grandparents. In the historic Golden Dragon building the wood paneling and bird laden wallpaper greets a steady flow of diners. Don’t let the flashback to yonder years make you think The Hollows isn’t part of the culinary extravaganza going on in Saskatoon. Sipping on a rhubarb margarita and gobbling down warm bannock with local Haskap berry jam a rotary phone rings in the background. 

In 2020 The Hollows closed due to the aging building. The owners consolidated their businesses at the sister restaurant Primal .

Is that a dingo?

No this is not Australia. However the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo, in partnership with the Australian Dingo Foundation, to bring dingoes to the northern hemisphere. With conservation at the forefront of the initiative, this is an effort to educate the public regarding the plight of endangered species in Australia. The Forestry Farm has long been on visitors lists of Saskatoon activities. It is currently the only facility in Canada to house purebred dingoes.

Reading reviews of Canada’s original top chef winner Dale McKay’s restaurant Ayden’s Kitchen and Bar , the word comfort appears time and again. Well let us tell you this is not your Grandmother’s kitchen. Saskatoon has grown into a centre for culinary excellence. Perhaps no where is that more apparent than in this trendy, high ceiling, open concept kitchen restaurant. We inhale the four cheese perogies in fried breadcrumbs as if they were the last morsels of food on the planet.  I may or may not have licked the plate. Comfort food indeed.

Nutrien Wonderhub Children’s Museum

Looking for kids’ activities Saskatoon has to offer? Of the fun things to do in Saskatoon, the recently opened Nutrien Wonderhub may win the grand prize. In the space formerly occupied by the Mendel Art Gallery, this children’s museum is an all hands on interactive dream come true. 

Hidden gem sculpture garden

We stumble upon the field of sculptures completely by accident. In the north west corner of the University campus, near the Diefenbaker Centre, a field of art overlooks the Meewasin Trail and nearby river. Begun in 1993, at an art symposium, the number of sculptures has increased over time. Many of the art pieces are crafted from limestone as are many of the buildings on campus.

Persephone – The largest of Saskatoon theatres 

Founded in 1974, the Persephone Theatre is Saskatoon’s own professional regional theatre company. The theatre is part of the Remai Modern Arts Centre in the revitalized River Landing area of downtown Saskatoon. With a Main stage and an aptly names second Backstage Stage, the Persephone is one of Canada’s largest theatres.

Cycle, run or walk the Meewasin Trail

For over 60 km, on both sides of the South Saskatchewan River, the Meewasin Trail is a haven of Saskatoon activities. Cyclists, joggers and walkers make their way under bridges and through pristine landscaped parks, as well as untouched natural areas, in and around the city. Within the city, 20 km of the Meewasin Trail makes up part of the Great Trail , previously known as the Trans Canada Trail. 

As the temperature in Saskatoon drops and when Saskatoon winter sets in, some areas of the trail are groomed for cross country skiing. Within the city, 20 km of the Meewasin Trail makes up part of the Great Trail , previously known as the Trans Canada Trail. 

The Meewasin Northeast Swale , located in northeastern Saskatoon, contains a diverse environment of natural habitat. With its proximity to the urban area, the native prairie grassland acts as a natural air and water filter. An are of recreation and education for visitors and locals alike.

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan

Cocktails and BBQ in tents on the riverbank? Shakespeare never looked so inviting. From early July to mid August, Saskatchewan actors perform classic works. Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan recently celebrated their 35th year. Apparently, the show is a hit!

Saskatoon Berry Barn

Taking its name from the Cree word misâskwatômina, the city of Saskatoon is named for the berry prevalent in the area. If you aren’t able to have one of my Mom’s incredible Saskatoon berry pies, then we suggest a trip to the Saskatoon Berry Barn . Should you visit in mid July and into the summer, you can pick your own berries. Easier still you can visit the bakery and gift shop to purchase Saskatoon berry treats ready made.

Go Gargoyle Gazing

We admit we found it by accident.  Arriving to see Lonely Planet’s recommendation of activities in Saskatoon, we sip on a local craft beer at Cathedral Social Hall . The large windows provide a stunning view of the Bessborough Hotel, directly across the street. Much safer than standing in the middle of the road looking for creatures built into the 10-story castle look alike, you can search for a unicorn, a bumble bee, a spider, a lion and a griffon from the safety of your table with refreshment in hand. They may not be true gargoyles but think of the creatures as close cousins.

Saskatoon looks like a modern and beautiful city. I love all the Autumn colors. There are so many great options for eating out, all looks yummy. Did I see a British red bus on your video? Great video btw. The sculpture garden looks very interesting and I would love a cruise on the Prairie Lily.

You did indeed see a red bus. It sits across the street from the Bessborough hotel and acts as a permanent food truck. How cute is that? Thanks for the feedback on the video. Dave gets full credit for that as he does all of our videos. Perhaps it will be a Canadian road trip for you one day. Saskatoon is a fabulous stop on the Canadian prairies.

In my youth, I worked for a U.S. Congressman from Montana, “The Big Sky Country.” When we visited Saskatchewan, I labeled it the “Bigger Sky Country.” We just passed through Sakkatoon in 2014; we will have to go back.

Ray ‘bigger sky country’ seems very apt for Saskatchewan. So much wide open space. If you get a chance to visit Saskatoon I think you would enjoy it very much, especially in summer.

These prairie cities have so much more to offer than folks realize. A great summary.

We’ve spent some delightful days in Saskatoon. Still there is so much to experience that I had no idea about. I think I’ll start with the Prairie Lily Cruise and the cranberry seasalt chocolate 🙂

Wendy I think there are so many little known gems and activities in Saskatoon. The amount of festivals the city has is surprising to me. As to the Prairie Lily we so enjoyed seeing the city from the river’s point of view. As to the chocolate my only warning is that it is addictive. 🙂

Happy to share this lesser known city with you. Coming upon the sculpture garden I could hardly believe it. No signs and so much beauty awaiting to be explored.

I’m trying to remember whether I’ve ever been to Saskatoon – I think we might have driven through it once, but it was long ago. Since the main character in my novels grew up on a farm near Saskatoon, I might have to go there and check it out – your article makes it sound enticing! 🙂

Jo its hard to get past the chocolate to be sure. That sculpture park was a complete surprise. I have family in Saskatoon and I’ve never heard anyone speak of it. It’s hard to imagine that 4 decades have flown by like that. Perhaps we are not quite as giggly as we were back then but still loving Saskatoon.

I never knew Saskatoon was so diverse. It’s wonderful to see it has blossomed into a tourist destination while keeping charm. I’ll bet we would need a month there to see and do everything!

Lexie I learned another thing today. I had no idea Pittsburgh was known for its bridges. Clearly more travel is required. As to the chocolate I warn you it is highly addictive and absolutely scrumptious. I would not have ever though Saskatoon would turn into such a culinary wonder. Definitely wonderfu lto revisit and see all the positive changes while the city retains its friendly feel.

Saskatchewan is now the only province I haven’t yet visited. Your description of Saskatoon makes me want to correct that! I like the idea of 20km of the Great Trail within the city. I envision a path with wonderful views of the river – my favourite kind.

Joanne I think you would love Saskatoon. Small town feel with the amenities of the city. Perhaps best of all the South Saskatchewan River and all of its paths. Perhaps you could kayak one way, cycle the other.

Saskatoon looks amazing and everything looks wonderful apart from that organic chocolate. Seems a little strong and different for me, I’m a boring milk choc only type of guy. I’m sure its delicious though. Didn’t know there was so much to see and do in Saskatoon (or where it actually was to be honest ).

I’m not a fan of dark chocolate myself and yet the Girls at the Market seem to have created such a delicious product. Glad to put Saskatoon on the map for you. Definitely not known as a Canadian hotspot but hopefully more people will check out this prairie gem.

I recall riding the train out west a few decades ago and it stopped at Saskatoon around 10 at night. I could see the lights of the city Sue, but was really curious it was like. So cool it still has the friendly, small town vibe.. I’m a bit of a chocoholic and that organic chocolate at the farmers market from “Simply Chocolate” looks so amazing. I can sense that the people are very proud of their city, such as saving the Broadway Theatre. And it show how it is presented. Everything is immaculate. And with beautiful parks and trails, and my favourite…..those untouched natural areas sounds like a place I want to get off the train and visit. Wow – why have I never visited Saskatoon before?! And who knew it could be this much fun?! I can’t wait to go this summer on my way to Winnipeg and try all your suggestions!

I think many people just see Saskatoon as a place to fill up with gas on their way somewhere else. Over the years the city has redefined itself. Still all that beauty of the bridges and river but now so much more. I hope you enjoy it.

I wouldn’t expect a castle and a Chinese pagoda in the middle of the Canadian plains, but there it is. The nice thing about visiting a place like Saskatoon is that you don’t have hordes of tourists so you get a nice visit without the inflated prices and crowds. Having said that, it looks like a very pleasant city with a lot of things to do.

I did pass through Saskatoon once, on the drive to Alaska, but I didn’t have time to explore. I believe we ate fast food, fueled the car, and kept on driving.

Jeff I think your stop is like what a lot of people do. Gas up and head on through. You are so right about Saskatoon not being over run with tourists. A place to experience the real Canada without having to elbow folks out of the way.

Saskatoon is an awesome place year round. Come back in the white months and we will take you out on the 12km of groomed winter fatbike trail network in a 300 acre afforestation area on the Southern edge of the City.

Like Saskatoon, Tirana in Albania is a dynamic city, both day life and nightlife are filled with numerous things to do. You should visit it.

Where is Saskatoon?

Brief History of Saskatoon

A man named John Lake led a group of settlers who arrived on the site of what would become Saskatoon in 1883. The goal of these settlers was to escape the liquor trades in the surrounding areas by founding a completely "dry" community. From there, Saskatoon grew into a town and then a thriving city.

Getting Around in Saskatoon

Public transportation in Saskatoon is not too great, so you should probably find other means of transportation if possible. Taxi companies like Comfort Cabs and Royal Taxi are reliable choices for getting around town. It will cost about $50 to get to the airport, but it's much cheaper than renting a car!

That being said, you can also invest in a car rental, so that you always have the option of going wherever you want to go and do whatever you choose. There are several rental agencies available such as Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Budget Car & Truck Rental, and more!

Many people prefer biking around Saskatoon because the city is relatively flat (compared to other major cities like Toronto or Vancouver). You can also walk as there are a lot of sidewalks and trails to use!

There are many interesting things to see and do when you're visiting Saskatoon. Here is a list:

This is a theater that hosts many shows, exhibits, and concerts such as the Broadway musical Priscilla , Queen of the Desert . It's also home to many other venues such as art galleries and theatres that host comedy shows, plays, dance recitals—you name it!

Remai Modern

This is the main art gallery of Saskatoon , and it's home to many great exhibits. It provides a window into Canadian culture by showcasing paintings, photographs, sculptures, films, and so much more!

The University of Saskatchewan

There are many beautiful campuses in Canada, but this might just be one of the best ones out there. This university has over 36,000 students and has over 400 acres of land. There are several interesting buildings to see such as the geodesic biodome or Rutherford's Residence (which is Canada's only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building).

Wanuskewin Heritage Park

If you're a history buff, visit the park to learn all about First Nations culture in Canada as well as traditional medicine and hunting techniques used by Indigenous peoples who lived on the prairies before Europeans arrived. This is also where archaeologists uncovered an ancient campsite that contained over 40,000 artifacts!

Northern Lights

Saskatoon is known as a great place to watch dancing northern lights in the night’s sky. Here are some of the best places to catch aurora borealis in Saskatoon:

• City’s parks – Saskatoon has over 200 parks which are great for viewing northern lights!
• Meewasin Valley Trails – 40 sq km of trails offers several excellent stops to admire the northern lights.
• The River – it is not only one of the most popular hang-out places in Saskatoon, but also a great place to see the northern lights.

Saskatoon has many festivals throughout the year to commemorate different times in history. The PotashCorp Fringe Festival draws hundreds of thousands of people every summer, and it features everything from plays by local artists to performances by comedians who have appeared on Comedy Central or Just for Laughs.

Saskatchewan Jazz Festival

There are only a few jazz festivals in Canada, but this one is definitely the best. It's also known as "Canada's National Jazz Festival", and it has been running since 1984!

Casino Saskatoon

If you're interested in gambling, check out Casino Saskatoon to try your luck with slots or table games such as blackjack. There are also live shows every week to keep you entertained.

Saskatoon has a lot of bars and nightclubs scattered throughout the city, so there is never a shortage of places to check out at night! There are also several festivals that take place during the summer months that draw people from around the world to see great shows and art installations.

When to visit Saskatoon

The best time to visit Saskatoon is summer, from June to August cause the weather tends to get hot then. Although if you prefer cooler temperatures and smaller crowds, May and September may also be good options.

You can reach Saskatoon by train. The city falls on the Western Canada route of VIA Rail. You can get a direct train for Saskatoon travel from Vancouver, Prince Rupert, Jasper, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Toronto.

You can also get direct buses from several cities in Canada. But, if you are traveling from afar, taking a bus might take too long. You can get to the nearest train city, and reach Saskatoon from there.

There are two things, if nothing else, you need to bring with you to Saskatoon. You need a warm smile, and a sense of humor, because this is one of the friendliest and most relaxed corners of the world.

Here are a few more fun facts about this prairie town: Its name is an Anglicized spelling of a Cree word that means ‘place of many berries’. Saskatoon only sees 353mm of rain per year, and an average 2,268 hours of sunshine, the most in Canada. In contrast, Saskatoon sees some of the coldest winters (at times dipping below -45 degrees Celsius) and some of the hottest summers (going well above 40 degrees!)And Saskatoon has a relatively small population, somewhere in the neighborhood of 250,000.

The market community has grown well beyond farmer’s to include artisans, crafters and specialty food makers. If you’re in town on a Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday during the summer months, head down to River Landing and enjoy a fabulous lunch and wander through the market alongside the beautiful Saskatchewan River.

2. Take a Horse Drawn Carriage Ride

What better to enjoy a warm summer day than to climb into an elegant wagon and listen to the rhythmic clip-clopping of hooves, with river views to your right, and city views to your left? Visitors can enjoy a number of tour options including a tour of downtown, beginning at the historic Bessborough Hotel, a Spadina Crescent tour that shows southern views of the Saskatchewan River and others. The sleigh rides generally run from May through to September.

3. Spend the Afternoon at Wanuskewin Park

The province of Saskatchewan is proud of its aboriginal heritage, and there are plenty of incredible parks to explore and cultural sites to teach you about the roots of this fascinating province. Wanuskewin Park area contains archaeological sites that pre-date the Egyptian pyramids. A short drive from downtown Saskatoon, the Berry Barn is located on a 300 acre strawberry and produce farm. 5. Acquaint Yourself with the Ghost of the Bessborough Hotel

Much like the Fairmont Chateau Springs in Banff, the Bessborough was a grand railway hotel, built in 1935. If you happen to peek out your door at night, keep your eyes peeled for an older man in a grey suit and fedora wandering about aimlessly.

The Sasktel Jazz Festival is eagerly anticipated by Saskatoonians annually. Like any other large jazz festival, this event attracts the best of the best including artists like Wyclef Jean, Erykah Badu, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and BSRK. This event happens at the end of June and into early July.

21. The Potash Corp Fringe Festival

Music and comedy are undoubtedly two of Canada’s greatest exports, Who doesn’t love Jim Carrey, Mike Myers or Russell Peters. We’re great at not taking ourselves seriously, and at the Fringe, this is just one of the many ways to showcase our talents, and share in the love of theatre with artists from around the world. Once upon a time, in 1947, eight up and coming theatre companies were turned away from the Edinburgh Festival of Music and Drama. These passionate and innovate artists decided to showcase their talents just outside, or on the “fringe” of the Edinburgh Festival. This exploded into a massive international movement, and Canada is now home to some of the largest Fringe Festivals in the world.

22. Go Shopping in Midtown

Saskatoon is bursting with funky second hand stores, upscale boutiques, and mainstream fashion pit-stops. If you ask a local where to shop, they’ll tell you either Broadway or Midtown. Be sure to check out local favorites like Turning the Tide, Saskatoon’s best independent bookstore. If you’re looking for a unique title, you’ll find it here.

23. Go Camping in Antelope Lake Regional Park

There are plenty of amazing sites to see just a few hours from the heart of the city. Saskatchewan’s love affair with nature and commitment to the preservation of land and its ecosystems are the precise reason you need to make some time to get out of the city and enjoy some of the province’s most beautiful parks. Antelope Regional Park is a short drive from Saskatoon, and the perfect place to bring the family. Here you’ll find a manmade beach and swimming pond, a trout pond and the comforts of a great camping spot like showers, fire pits and picnic tables.

24. Go Dogsledding!

What would a trip to Canada be without a proper introduction to one of our most adventurous outdoor activities. You can find dogsledding outfits all across Canada, but here on the prairies, its still done in the traditional manner. You won’t find any lapdogs among these hearty canines, their only desire is to run and pull. Dogsledding in Saskatchewan allows visitors to transition from spectator to active participant. Learn to mush and drive a team on a short day tour, or test your will against the cold, and try doing an overnight excursion.

The province of Saskatchewan may be landlocked, but it’s home to some 100,000 rivers, lakes and the most pristine freshwater fishing on the planet! What is Saskatoon famous for?

Saskatoon is the largest city in Saskatchewan. A city we are forever grateful for, to have given us professional opportunities, a quest for travel, and lots of road trips through the Prairies. Saskatoon showcases the province’s culture, history, and the indomitable Prairie spirit. 

Downtown Saskatoon is a nice neighborhood with river valley views, trails, international cuisines, breweries and bars, and more. 

Winter temperature in Saskatoon & Packing Tips

January is the coldest month in Saskatoon, with temperatures as low as minus 21 degrees Celsius. The winter months are from late November to March, where temperatures are below freezing point. 

Here are our pro packing tips for enjoying your winter break in Saskatoon Saskatchewan

• Top and bottom thermal: Layering is key for Canadian winters. Wear a base layer like a nice Merino wool thermal top and bottom.  
• Mid-layer: Get cozier with a mid-layer jacket, like this one
• Outerwear: This can be a waterproof parka or a nice wool coat. But in Saskatchewan winters, and especially outdoors we feel that a parka is better. Wear something that is long, and goes till the knee with a hood (to safeguard you from the winter elements). Here is one from North Face, that I like
• Snow Boots : Very important, they will keep you warm and also help you to walk without slipping and falling. Just ensure you are choosing the right boots that have a solid outsole for good traction on icy sidewalks.
• Warm/wool socks
• Other accessories like beanie , scarf , and gloves
• Cleats are a must. Or snowshoes if you are going snowshoeing!

What is there to do in Saskatoon in the winter?

There are a lot of fun things to do in Saskatoon in winter. Yes, there are extreme cold months (and many lasting typically longer than other places in Canada like Toronto ), but as long as you are dressed warm you can have a great time in the city. 

Snowshoe/walk the River Valley Trail 

Meewasin Valley Trail is our favorite place to venture out in the winter. All of 90 kilometres, the trail runs through the heart of the city, and also offers some of the amazing views, particularly of the historic Delta Bessborough Hotel and the many bridges running over the South Saskatchewan River.

It is perfect for beginner-level snowshoeing, and winter hiking enthusiasts. Families including small children can also safely enjoy winter activities here. 

You can choose your starting point at various parts of the city. We prefer to drive to the downtown area, park, and then make our way to the Delta Bessborough Hotel, under bridges, through landscaped parks, and along the river. 

Go skating at the Skating Oval or the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink

If you prefer to ice skate, visit the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink, located in Kiwanis Memorial Park North beside the Delta Bessborough Hotel. You do have to bring in your skates here to enjoy and also book an entry time to access the rink (January 2021).

Or try kicksledding in the river valley in Saskatoon in winter

Kicksledding is a unique and fun way to spend winters in Saskatoon. This is not specific to Canadian winters, but credit goes to the Swedes for introducing it. So all you do is hop on a chair on metal runners that slides across the snow, and then go kicking off from behind. Kicksleds are available for rent at Escape Sports .

The Meewasin Valley Trails are still the best place to go kicksledding!

Visit Western Development Museum 

If the cold is TOO much for you, head to the Western Development Museum. There are four museums of the same kind in the province, and I love the one in Saskatoon . 

WDM is the largest museum in the whole of Saskatchewan and is home to over 80,000 artifacts. The museum showcases the introduction of railways, industrialization, and life as it was in those years of growth and development. 

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. (Museum Closed on New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.

Museum Closed at 3:00 pm on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve.)

There are gift shops and Boomtown Cafe in the complex, and they are open during the same day/time as the museum. 

Explore displays at the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan 

If you are an art lover, the Remai Modern is the perfect place for you to spend the time. Its location, along the South Saskatchewan River in the downtown area, makes it easy to explore after a wander at the Meewasin Valley. 

They are open on all days, except Mondays and Tuesdays. The museum’s permanent collection features over 8,000 works from Canadian and international artists. They also host temporary and seasonal exhibits. 

Stop by the Delta Bessborough Hotel for tea, or overnight stay

After the bridges in Saskatoon, the Delta Bessborough Hotel is the most iconic structure in the city. 

It is a historic hotel located in the downtown area, overlooking the river valley in Saskatoon. The Bessborough was constructed as part of the Canadian National Hotels (for the Canadian National Railway). 

The hotel dates back to 1935 when the Châteauesque-styled building was created to serve as a resting place or an inn for railway employees. Today it is managed by Delta Hotels (hence the name – Delta Bessborough), a hotel chain part of Marriott International.

Hotel room rates at the Delta Bessborough start at $260 CAD +. They are great for a romantic weekend getaway in Saskatoon or just to treat yourself to a luxury stay soaking in the river valley covered in snow.

If you stay in the city, how about visiting the hotel restaurant for some nice afternoon tea or drinks and dinner in the evening?

Go skiing at the Diefenbaker Park & Optimist Hill

Optimist Hill is our very own city ski resort. They have everything from tubing to skiing and snowboarding. You can pay for a day pass or annual passes to access the ski lifts and rent snowboards and ski gear.

Prices for passes and rentals (2021):

• Adult Lift Passes (16+): $16 to $22 CAD daily or Seasonal pass of $330 CAD
• Adult Tube Passes (16+):  $16 to $22 CAD daily
• Youth Tube/Lift Passes (Under 15): $12 to $15 CAD
• Snowboard Rentals $8 to $22 CAD

Take pictures with Santa Claus and go shopping 

Want to take fun pictures with Santa Claus in Saskatoon, you are in luck. There are a number of Santa Claus – North Pole stations, where you can get pictures taken. Our favorite way to get photos taken (minus the cold) is by heading to a mall. 

So whether it is the MidTown Plaza, Lawson Heights, or the Centre Mall, you will surely be delighted with all festive decorations, seasonal sales, and of course meet with Santa!

Watch a show at Saskatoon’s Broadway

To experience the ultimate cultural extravaganza in Saskatoon, Broadway is the place to be. From theatre, cafes to entertainment there are a ton of things to keep you busy!

However, every year there are festive and Christmassy events that happen each year. All the merchants of Broadway get together to celebrate the Spirit of Christmas with sleigh rides throughout the district. There are festive stalls and handicrafts that you can purchase here, and enjoy marshmallow roast outside or meet with Santa Claus himself.

Winter festivals in Saskatoon from Christmas Parade to Lights at night

Canada gears up during the winter season, and Saskatoon is no different. We always look forward to experiencing winters in Canada, and loved our time when we lived in Saskatoon (it surely made us better drivers, driving in the snow!).

Anyhow, there are quite a few festivals that you can enjoy in Saskatoon in winter. They start as early as November and go on until early March, which is fabulous, right? And of course, you have guaranteed snow, so you are never late to capture white landscapes!

We loved the Enchanted Forest . It is a drive-through festive lights festival, and you get to soak in delightful lights decor from the comfort of your car seats. Passes are available per vehicle ($22 CAD+). This is Saskatchewan’s top winter tourist attraction. 

Another family fun event takes place at the popular Wanuskewin Heritage Park. In February, they organize the Kona – Wanuskewin Winter Festival, which is a one-day event. In this festival, you can explore the park and also participate in games. This event is not only fun, but educational for all. 

Here are some of the amazing winter festivals to enjoy in Saskatoon

Venture outside the city for more winter activities in and around Saskatoon 

Eb’s ski trails.

Located on Highway 11, just 17 km north of Duck Lake, you can enjoy Nordic or cross country skiing here. It is a great day trip option from the city of Saskatoon. There are over 52 km of trails that are used by skiers in the winter.

Other than the cross country skiing trails, snowshoe trails have been recently added. For updates you must visit Saskatoon Nordic Ski website. 

Fat biking near the Waskesiu Trail

Although not a day trip, you can head to the Prince Albert National Park from Saskatoon for a full day (or two) and go cross-country skiing, hiking, fat, and snowshoeing. If you want to go fat biking, the Waskesiu trails are majestic and wonderful in the winter. The National Park is a great visit in the winters, generally for wildlife sightings.  

Beaver Creek Conservation Area

Beaver Creek is a conservation area, located about 13 km south of Saskatoon on Highway 219. The area offers a range of trails and amazing Prairie landscape to enjoy in the winter. The terrain is mixed with hills, and plains and makes it a nice adventure, close to home.

Saskatoon Natural Grasslands

If you prefer to hang out by walks and soft adventure, then the Natural Grasslands are perfect for you. Saskatoon Natural Grasslands are a belt of grasslands that lies within the Silverspring area, which is about 8 kilometres from the city.

Here you can wander or walk along the South Saskatchewan River. This is a nice change of space than the one you have experienced in the downtown area.

CanoeSki Discovery Company is an adventure travel company, located in Saskatoon. They offer wilderness canoeing and cross-country skiing guided packages for visitors. If you are new to winter sports, this is a great place to start, and get some professional expertise and enjoy winter in a safe and more productive way!

Where to stay in Saskatoon in winter?

For your upcoming trip to Saskatoon, we have rounded up some of the best hotels to stay in the city. We stayed in a hotel when we moved there, and these picks are based on traveler reviews and opinions of our friends and family who have stayed in the properties.

We like the Downtown area for accommodation, but there are many hotels on the south side which are safe and a great option to stay in.

• ALT Saskatoon: ALT is a beautiful hotel, located in central Saskatoon. From here most of the sightseeing attractions will be closeby, and a little affordable as compared to the Delta Bessborough . You can check out photos here, and book  
• Hilton Garden Downtown: This is another downtown favorite in Saskatoon. I used to work downtown, and this was located right where my office was. Love the property interiors, and the mall (Midtown) is just a few steps away from here. Check it out here
• Hampton Inn Saskatoon South: This hotel is located on Stonebridge Blvd in Saskatoon. It is a newer hotel and is a popular pick for couples, and families alike. Rooms are modern and clean, with free parking and WIFI. Check availability here

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Shidler College of Business ’ School of Travel Industry Management ( TIM school) held its 22nd annual Celebrate a Legacy in Tourism gala on April 10, at the Sheraton Waikīkī. Also marking the college’s 75th anniversary, this year’s fundraiser raised a record-breaking $517,000 thanks to the generous support of the hospitality and Hawaiʻi business community.

“We’re proud to recognize Mufi Hannemann, Holden Lim and Kyo-ya as trailblazers in their industry, who continue to inspire current and future graduates,” said Shidler College Dean and First Hawaiian Bank Chair of Leadership Management Vance Roley. “Further, it’s incredible that over half a million dollars has been raised to support student scholarships. We applaud the efforts of our volunteer table sales committee and the 2024 honorees to greatly amplify our impact.”

Celebrate a Legacy in Tourism honors individuals who have made significant and long-term contributions to Hawaiʻi ’s tourism industry. This year, the Legacy in Tourism Award was presented to Muliufi “Mufi” Hannemann; Holden Lim, BBA ’89 was inducted into the TIM Alumni Hall of Honor; and Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts, LP received the Distinguished Service Award.

Hannemann was honored with the Legacy in Tourism Award for his vast contributions to the tourism industry and dedication to fostering the development of students. As president and CEO of the Hawaiʻi Lodging & Tourism Association, chair of the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority board, and board member of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, Hannemann has played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s tourism landscape. His founding of the Pacific Century Fellows and service to the TIM school as an advisory council member further showcases his commitment to nurturing future leaders.

Lim, president of Hospitality Link International, Inc. , was presented with the TIM Alumni Hall of Honor award, recognizing his professional achievements and continued support of the TIM school. Lim’s career in the hospitality industry began in 1989 at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco and over the years, he contributed significantly to firms like HVS International and Sonnenblick-Goldman Company, orchestrating over $4.5 billion in real estate transactions. Lim remains engaged with the TIM school, currently serving on the TIM Alumni Association as secretary.

Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts, LP , was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for their contributions to Hawaiʻi ’s tourism industry and the community, providing many hours of service and volunteer hours to various local causes. Kyo-ya expanded its footprint across Hawaiʻi and California, including iconic properties like The Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Maui. Additionally, Kyo-ya serves as a pipeline for hospitality careers, hiring numerous graduates from UH and mentoring high school and college students, ensuring the continuity of generations in the islands.
