How to get there: From the airport taxis go direct to your ship. The airport is at only 11 km from the cruise port. Alternatively you can use the excellent public transportation .

Copenhagen has three cruise terminals :

1. Oceankaj - c331 Terminal 1, c332 Terminal 2, c333/c334 Terminal 3 & Terminal 4

Most (turnaround) cruise ships dock here. With 4 terminal buildings it is the busiest pier.

To get there from the Airport:walk 2 minutes to Metro Line M2. Go 8 stops to Kongens Nytorv and change to Metro Line M4 line to Orientkaj. Walk across the parking lot and board the Free Cruise bus to Oceankaj. Ticket machine has English choice. Pay by credit card.

First free port shuttle bus to metro station leaves the ship at 8am.

1 Oceankaj in Ydre Nordhavn and capable of handling more than 5,000 passengers per call. 7 km from city center.

2. Langelinie: c190 to c199 Most used by smaller visiting ships. 3 km from city center.

3. Nordre Toldbod. Smaller ships, luxury megayachts, and ferries normally dock here. Quay 177 2km from city center.

Take the Metro from Copenhagen Airport to Nørreport Station. Change to S-train A, B, C or E-line and take the train 1 stop to Østerport Station. From here there are 15 minutes walk to Langelinie or to Nordre Toldbod. From the pier of Langelinie (as shown on the map below), it is only a pleasant 30-minute walk to the city center. You can take a short walk from Langelinie Pier to see the Little Mermaid statue or Amalienborg Palace . Langelinie's promenade is lined with plenty of shops, casual cafes and more.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

One way to make sure that you do not miss any of Copenhagen's major sights and landmarks are to take one of the numerous organized tours of the city, either by bus, bike or boat. Caution: Most canal tours are on open-air vessels, and therefore are not recommended for inclement weather.`

In a hurry: Take the harbor water bus (901/902) from either The Royal Library also called the black diamond for its sun/water reflections to Nordre Tloldbod, close to the Little Mermaid or vice versa for the price of a regular bus ticket. Every 20 minutes: a 15-minute tour of all waterfront highlights!

The Hop on/off buses of CitySightseeing are always present at all cruise terminals and offer 3 tours in and around Copenhagen.

Rent a City Bike for free: just deposit a coin of 20 Kroner, take your bike, and drop it off after you are finished at any point and get your money back.

Nearby Places:

Just to the north, along the Øresund coast, stretch a series of well-heeled suburbs: a visit to their attractions – the Danish Aquarium , Experimentarium and Bakken amusement park among them – can be followed up by lazing on the adjacent beaches.

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated 35 km north of Copenhagen on the North Zealand coast in a spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden.

Malmo Sweden: Take a 35 minute train trip over the spectacular Oresund Brige .

Shopping and Food

In the old center the Strøget area is actually a collection of pedestrian streets, filled with shops, cafes and restaurants, that spread out from this central thoroughfare. These streets are between the large squares, east in Kogens Nytorv and west in Radhuspladsen (The City Hall Square). You won't find the name Stroget on the street signs or on city maps, but if you ask a Copenhagener where to find Stroget, you will probably get a clear answer.

Eating and drinking out is quite expensive, but the possibilities are endless: from red hot Thai curries to traditional 'frikadeller' (Danish meatballs), from sushi to the typical smørrebrød, which are served at lunch: these open sandwiches have all kinds of savory toppings, typically including boiled egg and dill, beetroot, mackerel, roast onions, cold meats and goose or pork dripping. There are also takeaway smørredbrød kiosks throughout the city center.

For shopping mall addicts, there is Fields. Fields has its own Metro Station: Take the Metro in the direction of Vestamager and get off at the station Ørestad, then you are right at the main entrance to Field's.

Denmark has the highest Tax (VAT) rate in Europe: 25% on everything!

Denmark is not part of the EURO-monetary system, but major shops will probably give prices both in Danish kroner and in EURO (€). Most major international credit cards are accepted in Denmark. But be aware that a surcharge of 2 to 4 percent is often added, which is legal outside the USA.

Mon-Fri: 10 am-7 pm, Sat: 10 am-4 pm. On Sundays shops are normally closed but during the cruise season some department stores and malls are open.

Shops are allowed to open on the first Sunday of every month, as well as on all Sundays in December, preceding Christmas Eve. However, if the first Sunday in a month falls on a holiday or on Constitution Day, shops will stay closed. Please note that ordinary shops are closed on public holidays including Constitution Day, 5 June, and Christmas Eve, December 24. Kiosks, bakeries, station shops etc. are usually open on Saturdays after 5 p.m. and Sundays.

Another way to travel between the two is by taking the metro line. You will need to make sure that you secure a valid 3-zone ticket for this option.

If you are going to the Ocean Quay cruise terminal, you must take the yellow line to Kongens Nytorv. From there, you will switch to the blue line and get off at Orientkaj Station.

You will then need to walk about 3.21 km (2 miles) to the cruise terminal. This process usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour.

Getting to/from the Airport

Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is accessible from Central Station on the regular rail network or the metro from Kongens Nytorv. You will need a three zone ticket for either service (36 DKK, Jul 2022). See the Copenhagen airport link here https://info.parkering.cph.dk/en/buses-trains-and-metro

To take public transit to Oceankaj, take the metro to Orientkaj Station and transfer to the free shuttle to the cruise terminal or bus 25 or 164.

Any hotel in the city center is a good choice location-wise since the cruise terminal piers are relatively close by. Staying near train or metro stations will be convenient if you plan on using public transit. Search hotels in Copenhagen here

• Little Mermaid - located down the promenade from Langelinie Pier, this statue is the symbol of Copenhagen.
• Nynhavn - This old port area located at the eastern end of Stroget is now filled with restaurants on the sunny south-facing side. To save money and enjoy the area like a local, buy beers at a store and take a seat along the canal. You can also take a canal tour from here. There are two companies operating near identical tours so check the prices for both before buying your ticket. The first company you see will probably be the most expensive. Canal tours can also be boarded at Christiansborg Palace which is generally less busy.
• Tivoli Garden - This small amusement park with gardens, restaurants and rides was Walt Disney's inspiration for Disneyland. Entry 145 DKK. Opens at 11am. Beside Central Station with the main entrance on the north side of the park. http://www.tivoli.dk/
• Vor Frelsers Kirke (Our Saviour Church) - A unique church tower climbing experience since there are stairs on the outside of the main spire. Closed during heavy rain or wind. Tower entry fee 65 DKK. Metro Christianshavn http://www.vorfrelserskirke.dk/
• Christiania - this hippie squatters village on a former military site is an unusual tourist attraction if you don't mind the smell of hash and marijuana. Down the road from Our Saviour Church.
• Amalienborg Palace - this is one of several palaces around Copenhagen. The Marble Church is nearby. It's a short walk north along the waterfront from Nyhavn. Other palaces include Rosenborg (housing the crown jewels and with a large garden) and Christiansborg.
• Glyptoteket Art Museum - has a collection of many masterpieces. Adult admission 125 DKK (free Tuesdays, closed Mondays). Located beside the southeast corner of Tivoli Gardens. http://www.glyptoteket.dk/
• Danish National Museum (east of City Hall) and National Gallery (north of Rosenborg Castle) - Closed Mondays. These two museums used to be free but fees were introduced in 2016. http://natmus.dk/ http://www.smk.dk/en/
• Round Tower - A unique tower with a spiral ramp to the top. http://www.rundetaarn.dk/en/
• Take a free walking tour. You should tip your guide afterwards if it was a good experience. http://www.copenhagenfreewalkingtours.dk/

If you are planning to visit a lot of sights, consider buying a Copenhagen card which includes admission to many attractions and a public transport pass. The card can be purchased from 7-11 in Central Station or from the tourist office opposite the main entrance to Tivoli Garden. http://www.copenhagencard.com/

Shopping & Restaurants

Stroget is a long pedestrian street winding its way from City Hall (get a picture sitting on Hans Christian Anderson Statue) to Nyhavn. It also branches north to Norreport. Torvehallernekbh, an upscale covered market, opened in 2011 by Norreport Metro.

Visit the Carlsberg Brewery Museum for a tour and a beer (Enghave Station - walk through the large brewery complex).

Try a delicious pastry from LagKagehuset. Various locations, including inside Central Station, Stroget (a block east of city hall), CPH airport, and across from Christianhavn metro.

Sankt Peders Bageri is the city's oldest bakery. Their signature cinnamon rolls are only available on Wednesdays.

There is an Aldi discount supermarket beside Nordhavn station if you are on your way to Freeport Terminal. There is an Irma supermarket by both Norreport and Østerport station and another one beside the main entrance to Tivoli Garden. There is a small Netto supermarket by Norreport. A block north of Central Station is Rema 1000 at Hammerichsgade 1.

Fisketorvet mall is south of the city center. Take the S-Tog to Dybbolsbro station.

Reffen, an outdoor street food market, opened in 2018 across the channel from the Little Mermaid. You can take harbour bus 991 (return on 992), or hop on hop off boats to get here.

Cafés and restaurants including McDonalds may provide free wifi for customers. The port may also offer free wifi at the cruise terminals.

Post Office

There is a post office a block south of Central Station at Bernstorffsgade 36. The post office inside of Central Station has closed permanently. Stamps may be available from newsagents and from postcard sellers.

Been Here Before

Take a train across the Oresund Bridge to Malmo, Sweden. The 30km journey takes around 40 minutes with trains departing Central Station 3-4 times hourly.

The port of Copenhagen is located on the east coast of Denmark. Copenhagen is the capital of the country and the largest city of Scandinavia, with a population of 1.7 million people. Copenhagen is the residence of Queen Margrethe II, who currently lives at the Amalienborg Palace.

Copenhagen is a charming city with 17th and 18th century buildings, beautiful parks and gardens, lovely walks along canals and pedestrian streets. Copenhagen is famous for its Little Mermaid, a statue in homage to the writer Hans Christian Andersen.

It’s an expensive, but beautiful city.

Where is located the Port of Copenhagen Cruise Terminal

Copenhagen offers two large port facilities. The first, more widely visited by ships making day calls, is Langelinie Pier about 2.4 km from the centre of the city. This is a charming harbour area, with a series of shops and cafes, just a 10 minute walk from the city (taxis are also available). The Copenhagen Information Centre is located here and can also offer exchange office (and distributor) services.

On the other hand, the Freeport terminal , about 3.2 km from the city, is frequently used by ships for which Copenhagen is a port of embarkation or disembarkation. There is no service or ATM nearby (although taxis often take credit cards). The nearest train to reach the city is a 15-20 minute walk. As this port is busy, taxis are sometimes scarce. It’s best to plan your trips before you leave or take advantage of your cruise line transfer services. You can also book a private transfer .

How to get from copenhagen airport to the port.

A metro station is located in the Annex of Terminal 3. The journey from the airport to the Nureport station takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Several bus routes rely on the centre of Copenhagen and Terminal 3 airport. Line 5C connects Copenhagen Central Station and the airport in about 35 minutes.

The taxi ride will take about 35 minutes.

Private transport services are also available.

You can easily walk to Copenhagen. City Bikes are also available throughout the city.

From Langelinie Pier, bus 26, which runs every 20 minutes, will take you downtown. Bus boats near the polar bear statue at the end of the pier can also transport you to the centre of the city (a one-day ticket allows you to hop on and off all day).

From Freeport Terminal, shuttles are usually available nearby.

Vor Frelsers Kirke (Our Saviour’s Church)

If you are not afraid of the stairs, you can climb to the main spire of this church from the outside. The tower opens at 10 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday (Christianshavn metro)

Amalienborg Palace

The palace of the Danish royal family. The marble church is nearby.

Christiansborg Palace

Seat of the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Royal Reception Rooms.

Glyptoteket Art Museum

Has a collection of many masterpieces. Free on Sundays (free guided tours), closed on Mondays. Located on the southeast corner of Tivoli Gardens.

National Museum of Denmark

This museum has an impressive collection. The guided tour offered in English of the Vikings exhibition is very interesting. Another exhibition traces the history of Denmark. You will also find other ethnographic exhibitions on different eras and nations, including a floor dedicated to Egypt. Closed on Mondays in winter months.

National Gallery

This art museum is located in a pretty park and features collections of artwork from different periods. Closed on Mondays.

Hans Christian Andersen Museum

Honors the famous Danish fairy tale poet.

Copenhagen Amber Museum

Besides the largest piece of amber in the world, this museum has an excellent collection of amber that contain insects, plants and other prehistoric fossils. There is a shop where you can buy high quality amber jewelry.

Frederiksborg Castle

The largest Renaissance-style castle in Scandinavia. It was built in the first decades of the 17th century by King Christian IV and incorporates the most beautiful architecture of the Renaissance.

Carlsberg Brewery Museum

Visit the facilities where Carlsberg beer is produced.

Family activities

Tivoli garden.

This small amusement park with gardens, restaurants and walks was Walt Disney’s inspiration for Disneyland. Opens at 11 a.m. Next to Central Station at the main entrance on the north side.

Excursions in Copenhagen

If you stay for a few days, you may want to get the Copenhagen CARD , which offers free and unlimited bus and train access through the metropolitan area for one or three days, as well as free admission to more than 60 sites and museums. Two children under the age of 10 are admitted free of charge with each adult card.

A city tour by bus combined with a boat ride on the canals will make you appreciate the charms of the city. You will see the contrast of historic areas and new modern buildings such as the Opera House and the library.

Cycling and kayaking tours are a different way to explore the city.

The fishing village of Draoger is both picturesque and traditional. It is a pedestrian city where there are many craft shops and historic buildings to admire.

If you stay for the evening, a night excursion on the canals and to the Tivoli Gardens where you will be dazzled by nearly 100,000 twinkling lights.

Copenhagen is in the far east of Denmark, on the island of Zealand, the largest of Denmark’s islands. Most drivers will approach the city on the E20, which if coming from Malmo in Sweden will take across the amazing Øresund Bridge. Though called a bridge, it is only a bridge from Malmo to the artificial island of Peberholm, where it dives underground, and water, into a tunnel onwards to Copenhagen.

Driving times from nearby major cities are:

• Odense: 2 hours (175 km)
• Malmo, Sweden: 1.25 hours (55 km)
• Hamburg, Germany: 5 hours (350 km)
• Gothenburg, Sweden: 3.75 hours (280 km)

Copenhagen Airport is located just 8 km (5 miles) from the centre of the city.

Copenhagen Airport (Code: CPH)

Public transport.

Copenhagen has excellent public transport, so getting from the airport into the city and out to Oceankaj cruise ports is not a huge issue, however public transport is lacking for Nordre Tolbod and Langelinie terminals, leaving much longer walks to get to them. The price of a single ticket from the airport to any of the ports is 36 DKK.

For all cruise terminals, we suggest getting the train from Copenhagen airport to  Østerport station initially.

Oceankaj – From  Østerport station it’s a five-minute walk to the bus stop. As you exit the station, head left, cross the street and head to the bus stop which is just down the street to your left. From bus stop Østerport St. you can take bus 25 or 27 to Oceankaj which is a short walk from the terminal. Be aware that the buses used are standard city buses which can get very crowded and queues at the bus stop quite long as the buses only run every twenty minutes.

Nordre Tolbod – From  Østerport station it’s then a twenty-minute walk as you exit the station, head left, cross the street and turn left, following the edge of the Kastellet fortress on your right to the port area.

Langelinie – From Østerport station it’s a ten-minute walk as you exit the station, head left, cross the street and continue on, following the edge of the Kastellet fortress on your left to the port area.

Given the walking distances from Østerport station to Nordre Tolbod and Langelinie, you may prefer to take a taxi from outside Østerport station to the port.

Taxi’s in Copenhagen are not cheap and getting to/from the port in one is significantly more expensive than using public transport. Prices will range from 400-475 DKK on weekdays to 525-575 DKK on weekends and holidays from the airport to any of the cruise ports. Journey times should be between 30 and 40 minutes.

If you want the luxury of a private transfer, and prefer to book ahead, the companies below can all accommodate you.

Offering sedans for 3 people and minivans for up to 7,  Holiday Taxis  could be the ideal way to get to the cruise terminal.

For larger parties of at least 6,  Booking A Bus  has plenty of options to suit larger groups needing a transfer.

Get Transfer  can provide transport for parties from 3 people to 50 people. They even appear to offer a helicopter transfer according to their website!

Uber   and   Lyft  do not operate in Copenhagen due to local legislation.

We are not aware of any true shuttle services in Copenhagen.  What options we found are actually just booking people into taxis at higher prices than you could arrange for yourself.

Though it is easy to pick up a car at the airport, there are no car rental companies near any of the cruise ports. Therefore for this port, renting a car would only make sense if you intend to travel outside of Copenhagen before your cruise. If that is part of your plan then the following companies have offices both at the airport and in the city: Avis , Hertz , Sixt , Budget and Europcar

CRUISE COMPANY TRANSFER

Paying the cruise company to get from the airport to the ship is rarely good value, especially if more than one or two people need a transfer. You will invariably be better off using one of the alternatives above. For example,   Norwegian  prices as of Feb 2018 from CPH are $25 – one way.

HOTEL TRANSFER

With the cruise port relatively close to the heart of the city and the airport reasonably close too, it’s worth looking at a hotel which is close to one and provides a shuttle service to the other. Check out our  Copenhagen hotels  section for more info.

Copenhagen represents one of the most popular and attractive cities in Northern Europe. Alongside Stockholm , it is rich with numerous unique sights and touristic gems. That is why the city is included in almost all the cruise routes, able to offer as many as three cruise terminals to dock at. Let us understand the features of Copenhagen cruise ports together with Cruise Panda!

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Copenhagen Cruise Port?

As we have already mentioned, there are three cruise terminals in Copenhagen so a couple of days before your cruise starts you should consult where exactly your ship will be docked, at Langelinie or Frihavnen (located not that far from each other), or Ocean Quay (the most remote and the newest one). The exact cruise terminal you are arriving at can be found here.  

This cruise terminal with its quays C190-C199 is the smallest one located just 3 kilometers from the city center. It is used mostly for moderate-sized vessels. You can easily reach the center of the city by foot enjoying a 30-minute walk along the most prominent city sites including the worldwide famous Little Mermaid or use transfer shuttles provided by some cruise lines. Bus route No.26 is also available and is the most popular way to get to the central railway station and the metro. This route represents the main and the most convenient one available at the main cruise terminals and runs between the cruise port and Kongens Nytorv metro station. 

If your cruise ship is docked here you are lucky as it is located close to the center like the previous one so you can also use the popular bus route No. 26 or walk a little bit admiring the picturesque promenade.

Ocean Quay (Oceankaj)

It is the “youngest”, largest, and most remote cruise terminal from Copenhagen downtown. Having as many as 4 piers it can simultaneously receive several larger cruise ships. If your cruise ship is docked here (which is most likely) you have to use bus route No.25 or 27, get to the final stop of this route (Østerport), and then change to bus No.26 to get to the city center with all its numerous tourist attractions. 

By the way, hop-on-hop-off buses are available irrespective of what cruise terminal you arrive at. It is the best way of traveling around the city center especially if you don’t have much time but are willing to have a look at the main touristic gems (more detailed information concerning this kind of transportation and prices can be found here ).

Bus 26 serves all terminals to and from several stops in the city center. If the bus is marked "Færgehavn Nord", it will take you to the Freeport or Ocean Quay. If the bus is marked "Langelinjekaj", it will take you to Langelinje Quay and Nordre Toldbod. More info on transport to and from the cruise terminals .

You will need a two-zone ticket, which costs DKK 24. You must buy the ticket at the station before entering train or metro. More on zones  and tickets .

Transport options to and from Copenhagen Kastrup International Airport

Copenhagen’s International Airport is called Kastrup and is the busiest airport for international travelers to Scandinavia. It is just 8km from the center of the city.

Here are the transport options you have to get from Copenhagen Airport Kastrup to your city center hotel:

Many would agree that Denmark is expensive. So if you are traveling on a budget and want to save money, Copenhagen has an excellent bus system that can take you anywhere in the city center. 

The bus takes only 35 minutes, depending on traffic conditions in Copenhagen city center, and leaves from just outside terminal 3. Pay onboard with your credit card.

A taxi will cost you about 300 Danish Kroner (DKK). That’s around USD$45/GBP£35/AUD$60/EUR€40. The journey time is approximately 40 minutes from the airport to the city.

This is the most expensive option; however, you don’t have to carry your luggage and get door-to-door service straight to your hotel. If you are four people traveling together, this will be the most convenient option and the best value for money.

Trains depart regularly from Copenhagen Airport to the city center every 10 minutes. They go from Terminal 3 directly to Copenhagen’s central station. The journey time is 13 minutes, and the price of a one-way fare is around 36 Danish Kroner (DKK).

Buy a train ticket from the machines either at baggage claim or inside the terminal after you exit baggage claim. Proceed down the escalator to the train platform when you have your ticket. Signs mark the way and are written in both Danish and English. 

The city’s central station is right opposite the famous Tivoli Gardens, surrounded by many hotels, restaurants, and bars. 

Where to stay in Copenhagen

Here we present our favorite places to stay in Copenhagen! We have included top-rated hotels and more affordable ones, so there is something for everyone.

We recommend staying in a hotel that is at least 4-star. This way you will get a good standard of room, convenient amenities and good services such as helping with booking taxis and a concierge that can advise on local transport and provide city maps.

Copenhagen’s cruise terminals are located north of the city center. So we recommend you stay close to the city center for your pre-cruise nights and take a taxi to the cruise terminal on the day of departure. There is more information below about getting to your cruise terminal.

Copenhagen Admiral Hotel

Copenhagen’s Admiral Hotel is right on the quayside and within walking distance of the best shopping streets in Copenhagen. The lobby has a peaceful, friendly ambience, and the rooms are simple but stylishly decorated.

What we love the most, however, is the ground-floor restaurant, Salt. The casual atmosphere, food, and wine are fantastic; we highly recommend them!

Copenhagen Strand Hotel

This historic building was originally a warehouse. It has now been beautifully restored into a great hotel on the waterfront.

This hotel has the typical Scandinavian design of bright light, cool tones, and wood floors.

Everything is clean and spacious, and many 174 rooms offer a great view. Be sure to request one when you book.

Hotel Sankt Annae

Located right in the city’s heart, close to Amalienborg, Sankt Annae is a 4-star favorite hotel.

We like the unbeatable location. And this modern hotel with a great rooftop terrace. You are within walking distance of all of Copenhagen’s best must-see sights.

Copenhagen St Petri

How to get around Copenhagen

There is nothing like walking in a new city. It’s the best way to experience the atmosphere and get to know your surroundings and how everything fits together.

We recommend purchasing the Copenhagen Card . This card gives you entrance to the major sights free of charge or at a significantly discounted rate. 

Purchase the Copenhagen Card and choose the time to suit you. You can choose from a 24-hour card for up to 120 hours.

It also gives you free, unlimited use of the city’s public transport system, including transport from and to the airport and canal boat tours. (Note! Hop on/hop off buses are not included in the Copenhagen Card!). 

It’s good value for money. Purchase the card before you leave home or pick up your card at the airport information desk right after you collect your luggage.

3 days in the city before your cruise from Copenhagen

Spend at least three nights in this friendly city. That will give you two full days plus one day to make a day trip outside the capital. 

Day 1: Royal Palaces of Copenhagen 

Copenhagen is full of palaces. Start at the palaces of Amalienborg . You are in the district of Copenhagen known as Fredriksstaden. Built during the 18th-century Rococo period, it is also home to the Danish Royal Family. 

Every day at noon, you can witness the Changing of the Guard. There is a fantastic museum here if you want to learn the history of the Danish royals, located inside Christian VIIIs Palace. 

From Amalienborg, walk via Frederik’s Church towards the King’s Garden and Castle Rosenborg from the Renaissance period of the early 17th century.

This is probably our favorite castle in Denmark and well worth a visit. The interiors are spectacular, as are the crown jewels, some of which are displayed in this castle.

Iconic Tivoli Gardens and the famous Danish Smørrebrød

By now, you probably are looking for a place for lunch. There are many great places in Copenhagen where you can enjoy Smørrebrød. And we ask you not to leave this city until you have tried it!

Unlike many other parts of the world, Scandinavia leaves the top off their sandwiches – an “open sandwich.” And the Danes are the experts. Smørrebrød consists of cold meats or fish, spreads and dressings, and lots of fresh garnishes.

There are many other variations, so pick one that appeals to you the most.

Our favorite place is Hallerne Smørrebrød, just opposite Tivoli Gardens in the Tivoli Food Hall, by the central station. Their Smørrebrød is genuinely delicious. It is about a 30-minute walk from Castle Rosenborg. Walk via King’s New Square (Kongens Nytorv), and you can admire the architecture of the city and window shop as you go.

In the afternoon, we recommend you spend the entire afternoon at Tivoli Gardens . The area contains beautiful gardens, shops, roller coaster rides, restaurants, and musical entertainment. It’s an excellent place for the whole family, right in the middle of the city. During the Christmas holidays, Tivoli hosts the most beautiful Christmas market.

Restaurant Flammen is just a block from Tivoli Gardens and a great place to get dinner in the evening.

Day 2: Local culture and local food

Today you are starting at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. It’s a museum in a wonderful setting. Inside is a beautiful Winter Garden, which houses a great little restaurant, ideal for an early lunch or coffee, called Cafe Picnic .

Entrance to Glyptotek is free on Tuesdays, so time your visit well, and the whole family can go inside for free.

From the museum, walk towards Strøget. This is one of the many shopping areas in Copenhagen’s old city. It is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe. Enjoy the shopping, experience interior design shops showcasing the modern Danish style, and perhaps take home some unique Royal Copenhagen porcelain. 

When you reach Kongens NyTorv, look for the Amber Museum. Beautiful amber is found on Denmark’s coastlines. Baltic amber can be around 50 million years old, and the fine jewelers of this area make the most fantastic jewelry here.

Continue to Nyhavn, the 17th-century waterfront and canal district that offers restaurants, shopping, and bars. 

This area is one of the most photographed scenes in Copenhagen, with its brightly colored townhouses, ships, and boats lining each side of the canal. 

To avoid the crowds, get there early. But if you are a night owl, this area has a fantastic evening atmosphere. 

The children’s author Hans Christian Andersen was Nyhavn’s most famous resident. You can also visit the famous Little Mermaid statue inspired by his fairytale at the Langelinie promenade, further outside the center.

At Nyhavn, boats are readily available here to take you on a guided boat of the canal. See everything from the water and enjoy the coastline. Alternatively, continue walking Nyhavn over the Inner Harbour Bridge to the Bridge Street Kitchen. Here, you’ll find many food stalls and, if lucky, some outdoor seating to enjoy the view.

In the evening, we recommend you experience an authentic Nordic dinner. Organic, sustainable, and local are essential to many of the city’s best restaurants. You will find a good restaurant guide here .

Day 3: A perfect day out from Copenhagen

Getting out of the city and into the country is a perfect way to glimpse the Danish scenery and learn more about history and culture. 

There are three days trips which we can particularly recommend!

1. The historical city of Odense and the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen

Walk in the footsteps of this famed author of 200 years ago and see how his vivid imagination could bring to life his fairytales.

You’ll need to book a tour – Viator has some excellent ones – and have an early start – the city, named for the Nordic God, Odin, is located 167 km southwest of Copenhagen.

2. Frilandsmuseet in Lyngby (Open-air museum)

Just a 20-minute train journey from Copenhagen is the open-air museum called Frilandsmuseet. Take the train from Nørreport Station in central Copenhagen to Sorgenfri station in Lyngby. Bus number 191 takes you from the station to Frilandsmuseet in about 10 minutes.

Located in the countryside, explore Denmark and how it used to be many centuries ago. Visit the homes and see how houses were furnished and the people lived and took care of their livestock.

Most hosts are dressed in traditional costumes of Denmark or peasant clothing to add to the atmosphere. It’s incredibly authentic and very well done.

It’s an excellent place for families, with a cafe, plenty of outdoor seating, and countryside for kids to enjoy. 

3. Kronborg Castle 

Kronborg Castle is located in Helsingør, just a 45-minute train journey from central Copenhagen. Famous as the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a glorious Renaissance Castle. If you visit during the summer, you may be lucky enough to see one of Shakespeare’s plays performed here during the Shakespeare Festival. 

Book a picnic and experience a performance under the stars in this beautiful outdoor theater.

How to get to Copenhagen Port for your Cruise from Copenhagen

Always check your cruise ticket to find the name of the port in Copenhagen where your particular cruise ship departs. 

The main cruise terminals for the larger cruise ships are:

The ports are located north of the city.

• Taxi: The most reliable way to get there is by taxi. The journey will be about a 20-30 minute taxi ride to get you there, depending upon traffic and road works.  Your hotel can help you book a taxi to the port. Book this in advance when you first check in. The cost will be about 300 Danish Kroner (DKK). That’s around USD$45/GBP£35/AUD$60/EUR€40. Show your driver the number of the port terminal you need to reach (this information is on your cruise ticket) and the name of your cruise ship, so they get you as close as possible to your departure point.
• Private Transfer: If you are four people or more, you can pre-book a private transfer before leaving home. You can share the cost as this is the most expensive way to get from Athens city center to the port. Inform your driver which port terminal your ship leaves from (this information is on your cruise ticket). Give them the name of your cruise line so they get you as close as possible to your departure point.
• Train : You can take the train from Copenhagen’s central station, but the port is quite a walk from the nearest train station. Taking a taxi from the train station to your cruise terminal would be best.

How Far Is Copenhagen Airport From Cruise Terminal?

If you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, and are arriving by air and heading on a cruise, you may be wondering how far Copenhagen Airport is from the cruise terminal. The answer depends on which terminal your ship is docked at.

If your ship is docked at Terminal 1, also known as Langelinie Pier, it’s only a short distance from Copenhagen Airport. The distance between Terminal 1 and the airport is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), which should take around 20-25 minutes by taxi or private car. You can also take public transportation such as bus or train to get there.

Taxis are readily available at Copenhagen Airport and can take you directly to Terminal 1. A taxi ride from the airport to Terminal 1 should cost around DKK 250-300 ($40-$50).

By Public Transportation

You can also take public transportation from the airport to Terminal 1. There are several options available:

• Bus: Bus number 26 takes you directly to Langelinie Pier from the airport. The journey takes around 35 minutes and costs DKK 24 ($4).
• Train: You can take a train from Copenhagen Airport to Østerport Station, which is around a kilometer away from Langelinie Pier. You can either walk or catch a bus (number 27) from there.

If your ship is docked at Terminal 2, also known as Ocean Quay, the distance between the airport and the terminal is a bit further. There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

The line's six- and seven-night cruise-only itineraries include up-close views of the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier, the world's longest tidewater glacier at 76 miles long. For an in-depth exploration of Alaska's interior, Celebrity's cruisetours extend the trip to a maximum of 13 nights and feature small-town destinations like Talkeetna, Alaska – the quirky village that inspired the 1990s television show "Northern Exposure." There are also themed tours centered on wildlife viewing and national parks, as well as culinary tours highlighting the flavors of Alaska.

Couples will also find plenty of adult-focused activities and entertainment on board, no matter which vessel they choose. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. UnCruise Adventures

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.
