How to Have an Epic Mau’i and Molokai Helicopter Tour

maui sunset helicopter tour

quickwhittravel

Updated July 1, 2021.

Have you ever flown in a helicopter? This was our first time ever in a helicopter, and we were very excited for the experience! We booked our tour in mid-February, though our flight would be May 2–our fourth anniversary! If you’re looking for a memorable way to experience Maui, this is it.

What to Know Before You Go

  • You will want to book in advance. Tours often sell out!
  • If, by chance, your tour is not booked to its minimum requirement, Maverick Helicopters will call you in advance to reschedule your tour. This happened to us, but keep reading until the end to see what the fix was!
  • For this reason, it’s a good idea to schedule your helicopter tour early in your trip instead of in the middle or toward the end.
  • You will need to provide your weight and that of everyone in your party at the time of booking, as well as be prepared to be weighed with any bags or other items you bring with you the day of your tour. But don’t worry, the girls at the counter were very discreet and did NOT announce anyone’s weight aloud! Whew!
  • Maverick’s facilities are located at the Kahului Heliport, near Kahului Airport (OGG). Drive toward the airport, and be on the lookout for the signs to the  heliport .
  • Your placement in the helicopter will be determined at check-in, according to weight and balance.
  • Check-in starts 30 minutes before flight time.
  • Helicopters have two passenger seats in the front row to the right of the pilot and four seats in the back row; you may not get a window seat, but you will be surrounded by windows!
  • We were advised that parking was $7, but we did not have to pay for parking, and we parked right outside the Maverick Helicopter’s building. I’m not sure what we did wrong, but it seemed right to us!

Helicopter safety.

Maybe it’s just me getting older, or maybe it’s because I’m married now and I have so much to live for, but I am finding myself more and more afraid of things. I used to be so gutsy and such an adventurer, but now I can’t help but think of the scary possibilities! But I can honestly say, our pilot, Jake, put us totally at ease and explained some very important safety features of the helicopter. Here’s a quick run-down:

  • Jake was a medevac pilot before he was a touring pilot, meaning we were in excellent hands for our flight!
  • The helicopter floats! The landing skids are equipped with flotation devices, so we would float on top of the water in case of an emergency, not sink inside the helicopter.
  • The propeller on top did not start until we got in, and we did not get out until they stopped. Meaning no worries of beheading or other gruesome accident possibilities.
  • Jake told us how to open or jettison (remove) the doors in case of emergency.
  • We were given headsets with voice-activated microphones so we could ask Jake questions and talk to each other in-flight; the helicopter would have been far too loud without the headsets!
  • Everyone is required to wear a lifejacket in a little pouch strapped to their side. In the unlikely event that you need it, you pull the orange tab and slip it over your head. It’s already strapped to your waist, so that’s one less thing to remember to do! It’s very fashionable as well:

The experience.

We had perhaps the best travel experience of our lives, and our pilot Jake was awesome! The tour was easy to book, and there were plenty of tours to choose from over Maui and the nearby islands. Everyone we came into contact with at Maverick Helicopters was kind, helpful, and smiling! And it helped that we had an uncommonly calm day with almost no wind at all, making for an incredibly smooth flight! It was a fantastic first helicopter experience!

We chose the Sunset Odyssey Tour, which flies over West Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. However, it was a cloudy day, so we were not going to be seeing any sunsets! So Jake showed us a different route we could take if we wanted, which flew over the Molokai sea cliffs (the tallest in the world, with views of the tallest waterfalls in the world), Molokai’s barrier reef (the second largest in the world), and over the West Maui mountains and central valley.

Well, since I mistakenly thought the Sunset tour included the Molokai cliffs and that’s what I was  most interested in seeing (whoops!), I’m so glad there would be no sunset and that he gave us the option to change things up so we would still have a phenomenal tour!

The hovering feeling of taking off in a helicopter was unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced! All of a sudden, we were floating! And then we were off like a shot.

Heading to molokai.

I completely forgot all my irrational fears and was suddenly just excited to be there! I’d seen pictures from these air tours before, but being there myself was an even more spectacular experience. As we made our way across the Pailolo Channel from West Maui to Molokai, we saw the iconic “Elephant Rock” off to our right. Jake also explained that the Pailolo Channel is much rougher than the Auau Channel between Maui and Lanai. There used to be two ferry services from Lahaina, Maui: one to Lanai, and the other to Molokai. The trips were the same distance, but the trip to Lanai takes 45 minutes, while the trip to Molokai would take over 5 hours! We definitely preferred the helicopter!

Molokai sea cliffs.

The Molokai sea cliffs are the tallest in the world. Molokai used to be much larger, but then the volcano that formed it collapsed a million years ago, causing a tidal wave that went all the way around the world. A contributor to Noah’s flood, perhaps? No matter what, they are epic. That’s the word that keeps coming to mind when I think of seeing them up-close. The tallest part of the cliffs is nearly 4,000 feet tall, and the waterfalls streaming down like tears are just as high, making them the tallest waterfalls in the world.

These fantasy-land cliffs are the only sight that have ever rivaled Kauai’s Napali Coast for me. Seeing the Molokai sea cliffs and the Napali Coast are the two most beautiful, most majestic, most magnificent experiences I have ever had in all my travels, all over the world.

Kalaupapa peninsula.

If you’ve ever heard of Molokai before (and don’t worry if you haven’t), it’s probably because of the former leper colony on the island’s isolated Kalaupapa Peninsula. This site was chosen because it can only be accessed by sea, since the cliffs are far too tall and rugged to be traversed easily. Because Leprosy was not understood and contagious, the solution was to isolate anyone who had it to prevent the spread of the disease.

Leprosy is also called Hansen’s disease after the Norwegian scientist who discovered the bacteria that causes the disease, and carriers of the disease were sent here to be isolated beginning in 1866. Though there is now treatment and a preventative vaccine for the disease and the last lepers were sent here in 1969, there are still 16 remaining residents who have chosen to stay here, all of whom are taken care of by the Hawaiian government.

The history of the colony is far more involved than that, but knowing even part of the story made me excited to be flying close enough to see it from the air myself.

IMG_7710

If you’re interested in learning more about the colony, I suggest reading  Molokai by Alan Brennert , and actually I’m looking forward to  Daughter of Molokai coming next year from the same author.

Over the Mountains to Molokai’s Barrier Reef

It was humbling and almost unnerving how small I felt in the helicopter as we hovered so close to these epic sea cliffs, but then we surmounted them! I could not help but stare, open-mouthed, as we went up and up, over the sea cliffs and the Molokai mountains. I held onto my husband with one hand and tried to snap pictures with the other, knowing no photograph could do these jagged ridges justice.

And as if the experience on the north shore of Molokai wasn’t impressive enough, we caught our first glimpse at the second largest barrier reef in the world, topped only by the Great Barrier Reef. The snorkeling here is noted as phenomenal, because it is largely untouched and undiscovered by tourists. This pristine reef system goes out from shore for a mile, and follows Molokai’s southern coast for 30 miles. If I could only get my snorkel mask to fit correctly…

West maui mountains.

As you can tell, Molokai left an unforgettable impression on me. But as we left Hawaii’s “Most Hawaiian Island” (also called “Friendly Isle”) behind us, I realized exactly why Maui is nicknamed the “Valley Isle.” We flew past the Kaanapali resorts, the old Hawaiian capital of Lahaina, saw both islands of Lanai and Kahoolawe in the distance, and swung around to the right to explore the West Maui mountains. Almost anything would be a disappointment after experiencing the Molokai sea cliffs, except the lush, cascading West Maui mountains. If the Molokai sea cliffs are epic, Maui’s western mountains are peacefully stunning.

The plot twist.

You may remember I said that we got the dreaded phone call to reschedule our tour because they need four passengers to make the tour go, and Steve and I were the only two people signed up. This was kind of a big deal to me because I purposely scheduled our tour for Steve’s and my fourth anniversary, as my gift to him. So when I got the call that we’d have to reschedule, I was quite disappointed. Poor Steve saw the look on my face and thought someone had died!

Janelle from Maverick was really nice about it and told me what other times were available, but I was still hoping to make it happen  on our anniversary (May 2). So I took a deep breath and asked if they needed four passengers for weight and balance purposes, or if they need four  payments for the tour. She told me the amount if I simply paid for the other two seats, but then I got another idea…

Just the day before, I saw on Facebook that our friends Ron and Jane were vacationing on Oahu with another couple. I sent her a message, and since they planned to come to Maui the next day, we decided to get together for a meal. Not only are Ron and Jane our friends, they also did Steve’s and my pre-marital counseling four years ago! Not only that, they moved away for a job opportunity just days after Steve and I married, so we had not seen them in four years! So I thought maybe, just maybe, they would want to go on this epic adventure with us!

So I asked Janelle if I could call her back in a few minutes with an answer to whether we would reschedule or I would pay for the other two seats. I called up Ron and Jane to ask, with no pressure, if they would like to join us. And they were in!  I gave Janelle their number to work out the details, and less than 24 hours later, they were picking us up to carpool over to the heliport! God works in such mysterious ways. All these events were much more than a crazy, random coincidence, and I am just so grateful to have had this experience with a couple who means so much to us,  on our anniversary!

15 Best Hawaii Helicopter Tours

Hawaii, the fiftieth and most recently added American state, is many people’s idea of paradise. The Pacific archipelago’s islands all have distinct personalities, yet all of them bring to mind turquoise waters lapping against white sand beaches, giant lava-spewing volcanoes, and a relaxed, laid-back culture that many of us can only dream of.

Hawaii is not a regular holiday destination, and it has an adventurous side too. You should make your trip to the tropical archipelago extra special by considering getting an aerial view of the islands from a helicopter. This is a once in a lifetime experience and is bound to be absolutely unforgettable.

But how on earth do you choose the right one? Well, we’ve put together this list to help you choose the flight for you and tick seeing Hawaii by helicopter off your bucket list.

1. Big Island: Helicopter, Zip-Line & Volcano Tour with Meals

Helicopter, Zip-Line & Volcano Tour

A perfect experience of Big Island for those with an adventurous side, this eight-hour guided tour incorporates helicoptering, ziplining, and a delicious picnic lunch, all in the jaw-dropping Volcanoes National Park.

In the morning, you’ll soar through lush green jungle on the longest zip line in a Hawaii. After that, it’s the highlight of the day; watch the jungle give way to black lava as you soar over the active Kilauea volcano. You’ll also see the rainbow waterfalls, before dinner at a winery.

Watch the sunset within the national park before you are whisked back to your hotel.

2. Maui Dream 65-minute Helicopter Flight

Maui Dream Helicopter Flight

Get yourself to Kahului airport on Maui before taking to the skies for this experience of a lifetime, which will see you ride for just over an hour over the “Valley Isle.” You’ll do a complete circle of Hawaii’s second largest island, taking in its tranquil beauty.

During the 65-minute flight, you’ll see hidden valleys in the West Maui Mountains, the tropical green Hana rainforest landscapes, and the volcanic crater of Haleakala National Park – all of this surrounded by the uninterrupted blue of the Pacific Ocean.

Don’t forget your camera, as you’re sure to get some breath-taking shots.

3. Maui and Molokai Scenic Helicopter Flight

Maui And Molokai Scenic Helicopter Flight

This 55-minute tour takes in not just one, but two of Hawaii’s magnificent islands: Maui and Molokai. Starting at Kahului airport on Maui, your flight will begin by taking you over the world’s largest sea cliffs before seeing some of the most formidable waterfalls on Molokai.

The in-flight commentary will tell you exactly where you are; whether it’s the huge fish ponds or Elephant Rock. In the second half of the flight, when flying over Maui, you’ll get great views of the island’s tallest waterfall and the West Maui mountains. If you’re really lucky, you’ll even see the Wall of Tears waterfall, weather permitting.

4. Maui Spirit Helicopter Flight over Hana And Haleakala

Flight Over Hana And Haleakala

This Maui tour focuses specifically on the eastern part of the island. Feel a rush of excitement as you leave Kahului heliport and head towards Haleakala National Park. Peer down into the crater of the world’s largest dormant volcano before being whisked off over the Hana rainforest.

Other highlights of the trip include Maui’s incomparable coastline, Old Hana Town, and the Manawainui valley.

In winter, those with especially good eyesight may even be able to pick out humpback whales in the blue of the Pacific Ocean.

5. Maui: Multi-Island Sunset Odyssey Helicopter Tour

Multi-Island Sunset Odyssey Helicopter Tour

Can’t decide which island you want to see at sunset? Then this is the tour for you. Not only will you fly over Maui, but in just 40 minutes, you’ll also fly over Molokai and Lanai.

This dusk tour will take in some of the top attractions from each island, including Molokai’s ancient fish ponds, Lanai’s shipwreck beach – where you can still feast your eyes upon a stranded US World War II ship – and Maui’s Molokini crater.

There’s no chance of you tearing your eyes away when you’re over the water either; you’ll pass over Elephant Rock and the clear waters of the Pailolo Channel.

6. Maui: 75-Minute Hana Rainforest Helicopter Tour

Hana Rainforest Helicopter Tour

This helicopter tour is more than just a flight where you can gawp at the jaw-dropping landscapes before you. The 75-minute Hana Rainforest Helicopter Tour actually lets you land in the Wailua Valley, where you’ll explore what used to be a taro plantation.

A delightful 40-minute round-trip flight will get you acquainted with enormous sea cliffs, roads cutting deep into the rainforest, and even the world-famous Jurassic Rock. Thirty minutes on the ground may not sound like a lot, but it’s enough to find out from your pilot about the remote Hawaiian landscape – home to crops like as coconut and banana.

7. Oahu 60-Minute Helicopter Tour: Doors On or Off

Oahu Helicopter Tour

Take away the stress of getting to and from the heliport by enjoying round-trip transportation from your hotel to the chopper that will give you magnificent views of Oahu.

Choose whether you want the doors of your chopper on or off before ascending above the famous Waikiki skyline and taking in the best that Oahu has to offer. Volcanic cliffs, coral reefs, and a massive engineering marvel of a lighthouse are just a few of the spectacles you’ll be treated to on this trip.

The tour ends on a sobering note as you pass over Pearl Harbour.

8. Oahu: 30-Minute Night Lights & Fireworks Helicopter Tour

Night Lights & Fireworks Helicopter Tour

Fireworks are great from the ground, but how many people can say they’ve seen them at eye level? Well, anyone who’s been on this tour, for one. Get picked up from your hotel and strap in your phone so you can take incredible photos of fireworks as you’ve never seen them before.

Your flight begins at sunset, where see the last rays reflecting on the pristine waters of the South Shore. As the skies turn black, watch the weekly fireworks show from the Hilton Hawaiian village, coloring the beaches and waters below. Your tour will wrap up when you fly over the USS Arizona Memorial.

9. Oahu: Waikiki 20-Minute Doors On / Doors Off Helicopter Tour

Waikiki Helicopter Tour

You’ll never see Waikiki in the same way again after you fly over it in a chopper. Spot sunbathers and surfers as you soar out of Honolulu harbor, before passing over the pristine white sands of Waikiki Beach.

A friendly and knowledgeable guide will be on hand with live commentary, pointing out other iconic sites such as Diamond Head and Punchbowl Crater.

Your tour winds down by flying over the USS Arizona; your guide is sure to give you more of a background into the poignant events that led up to the destruction of Pearl Harbour.

10. Oahu: 30-Minute Helicopter Tour over Honolulu City Lights

Honolulu City Lights Helicopter Tour

What’s better than seeing Honolulu city by night? How about seeing Honolulu City by night from a helicopter? Spend your day enjoying the city’s charms before being picked up from your hotel, full of anticipation for your flight.

You’ll have jaw-dropping panoramic views of the city skyline, as you see how the lights from the skyscrapers color the sand and sea, giving it an eerie and ethereal glow. You’ll pass over the city harbor, Honolulu Tower, and the Ala Moana center, before seeing the beautifully lit Pearl Harbour and USS Arizona memorial.

11. Oahu: Waikiki Sunset Doors On or Doors Off Tour

Waikiki Sunset Doors On Or Doors Off Helicopter Tour

A great flight if it’s your first time, 20 minutes should be enough for you to feel the thrill of flying in a helicopter. You’ll be accompanied by a guide who will tell you all you need to know about the sites you have a bird’s eye view of, as the vibrant colors of a sunset in paradise merge into one.

See Diamond Head and the Waikiki skyline bathed in orange, pink, red, and a host of other colors, before descending via the moving USS Arizona memorial. This short flight is bound to whet your appetite for another helicopter trip.

12. Oahu Circle: Island Helicopter Tour Doors On or Doors Off Tour

Island Helicopter Tour

For those who have spent a lot of time in the city, this is a great opportunity to get to know the more remote parts of Oahu Island. You’ll fly over all of the big-ticket attractions mentioned in other Oahu tours on this page, but this one has a bit of a difference as it’s very nature focused.

Travel up the coast and marvel at the spectacular Manalua Bay, one of the island’s many coral reefs, the Windward Coast, and Lanikai Beach.

Before heading back to Waikiki, you’ll see the full range of the diversity of Oahuan landscapes, as you look down on the Ka’a’awa valley and the Sacred Falls.

After this exhilarating flight, you’ll be taken back to your hotel in comfortable, private transport.

13. Oahu: Path to Pali 30-Minute Doors On or Doors Off Tour

Path To Pali

On this half-hour tour, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken to the island’s South Shore, where your friendly guide will accompany you into your helicopter and take to the skies.

After flying out of the city, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the natural wonder of Diamond Head before heading up one of the world’s most picturesque coastlines, the Windward Coast.

Your tour will then turn inland, giving you a glimpse of the splendid Mount Olomana and the precipitous Nu’uani cliffs.

This tour is a perfect blend of Oahu’s most precious natural and man-made sights.

14. Kauai: 25-Minute Scenic Flight Tour Over Western Kauai

Scenic Flight Tour Over Western Kauai

Maui may be the “Valley Isle,” but smaller Kauai is known as the “Garden Isle,” and this 25-minute tour is a great way to learn how it got that name. Get yourself to Port Allen Airport, where you’ll be met by the guide who’ll provide your in-flight commentary.

Most of Western Kauai’s natural wonders are inaccessible from the ground, making this tour a no-brainer. Fly through the Grand Canyon of the Pacific – Waimea Canyon – as well as seeing the Manawaiopuna falls, which had a starring role in the film Jurassic Park, before heading back to land via the farmlands and mountains of the Hanapepe Valley.

15. Kauai: 55-Minute Flight from Waimea Canyon to Na Pali Coast

Waimea Canyon To Na Pali Coast

This tour, lasting almost an hour, leaves from Port Allen airport and really shows you the best that Kauai has to offer. The island’s most famous landmarks, Waimea Bay and the Na Pali coast, are the focal points of this trip.

Na Pali’s jagged emerald cliffs seem to drop into the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean along the 17-mile stretch. You’ll then head inland to the desert landscapes of the Waimea Canyon. Not only will you see the two top landmarks, but you’ll also see several settings from the Jurassic Park films, as well as Mount Makana and one of the world’s wettest places – Mount Waialeale’s tropical rainforest.

This is the perfect trip if you want to see the best of Kauai from the air.

Sunshinehelicopters Maui Circle Island Deluxe Helicopter Wall Of Tear Green Mountain

Wall of Tears

You may not have seen the Wall of Tears on many guidebooks or websites, and that is because it is hidden deep in the West Maui Mountains and not very accessible from the ground. As many as 17 waterfalls can be seen cascading down a cliff face at a time, hence the name Wall of Tears. A helicopter is one of the best and only ways to see this incredible site.

Sunshinehelicopters Maui Circle Island Deluxe Helicopter Pools Of Oheo Swimming

Seven Sacred Pools

Seven Sacred Pools ‘Ohe’o Gulch, otherwise known as Seven Sacred Pools, was added to Haleakala National Park in 1969. When the water levels are up, there are seven main pools and dozens of smaller pools branching off of them. From the air, this site is truly magnificent.

An Adventure For The Whole Family

Be sure to arrive at the Kahului Airport 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time to check in for the flight and meet your pilot. After lifting off, your pilot will head to the interior of the West Maui Mountains, which could be described as a misty wonderland. Steep volcanic ridges covered in thick vegetation reach towards the sky and in between those ridges lay miles of jungle valleys. Highlights of the West Maui Mountains include the Wall of Tears and Maui’s tallest waterfall which is Honokohau Falls. As your pilot follows the West Maui coastline back towards Central Maui, you will be treated to views of the resorts in Kapalua and Kaanapali as well as beautiful and historic Lahaina Town.

After flying over the now overgrown sugarcane and pineapple fields of Central Maui, your pilot will ascend the gentle slopes that lead to the peak of the world’s largest dormant volcano, Haleakala. The inside of Haleakala’s central crater is an otherworldly landscape with massive iron oxide cinder cones that reach over 1,000 feet into the air. Around the backside of Haleakala, enjoy views of Kaupo, Ko’olau Gap, the Seven Sacred Pools, Charles Lindbergh's grave and much much more. Following the coastline, the jungle will become much more dense as you approach the small town of Hana nestled in the rainforest. As the tour continues following the traditional route of the Road to Hana, be prepared to see unforgettable views of the jungles, waterfalls, sea cliffs, and volcanic peninsulas that make this region so incredible. As the tour concludes, you will fly over Maui’s North Shore which is home to legendary surf breaks and the small town of Paia.

A high-definition video of your flight will be available for purchase after your flight. The video will allow you to relive the memories of this amazing experience and it will be narrated by your pilot.

This helicopter excursion offers generous views of Haleakala’s magnificent crater. Travel through Maui’s most remote areas with views of Hana Town, amazing rainforest waterfalls and the famous Ho’okipa windsurfing beach. Look for humpback whales (when in season).

Climb above central Maui and ascend the largest dormant volcano in the world, Haleakala (“house of the sun”). Explore its immense moonlike crater with pure iron oxide cinder cones reaching over 1,100 feet tall. See Kaupo and Ko’olau Gaps, the huge lava flows from the crater to the sea.

Hana’s almost uninhabited “back side” is home to Lindberg’s grave and the “Seven Pools.” The Hana rainforest extends for over 180 square miles along Maui’s northern coast and is the largest tropical rainforest in our nation.

The tour includes views of fabulous coastline waterfalls, Old Hana Town, the taro fields of Ke’anae, Haleakala National Park, Kipahulu, and the world-famous Ho’okipa windsurfing beach on the return.

Helicopter has four seats in the back and two seats in front for guests. Open seating is determined based on weight & balance for all six passengers. First Class seating is guaranteed two front seats next to pilot.
