Cruise to Baja Mexico for some south-of-the-border flavor with a coastal twist. Don’t be confused — the Baja California peninsula is actually in Mexico, and cruises to Mexico are a great way to explore this area. Getting there’s a snap, because it’s just south of California (California, USA, that is) and it’s all just a short trip when you cruise from Los Angeles. While the region features a geography not unlike SoCal, it’s a different world… one that attracts American expats, and especially retirees, who call coastal resort towns like Ensenada their home. Cruise to Baja Mexico and enjoy Ensenada’s beaches before hitting the fashionable shops of Avenida Primera for new jewelry… duty-free, of course.

  • Get to know the place through the delicacies it brings to the table.
  • Enjoy life on the coast… plus the fishing, surfing and kayaking opportunities it offers.
  • See what’s on tap at the region’s local craft breweries.

Find Wildlife & Adventure on Baja Small Ship Cruises

A Baja cruise is the ultimate and often only way to explore the Baja peninsula’s remote coves and beaches that simply cannot be reached by land. Small ships offer a Baja backstage pass with daily activities led by expert naturalist guides focused on learning and exploring off the boat in small groups. Hike among cactus forests, kayak the Sea of Cortez, lock eyes with gray whales in Magdalena Bay, swim alongside whale sharks in La Paz, and snorkel with sea lions at Los Islotes. Baja small ship cruises make it all possible with comfort and ease.

Explore the undeveloped coastline John Steinbeck called “ferocious with life” aboard our selection of Baja cruises and witness incredible wilderness and up-close wildlife found nowhere else on earth. Island hop within the Sea of Cortez, choose a comprehensive route around both sides of the peninsula, or cruise to Baja California down the coastline starting from southern California. Let us help you decipher between our Baja small ship cruises, and prepare to see wild Baja as few ever do.

Discover whales, dolphins, colorful birdlife and pristine beaches while island hopping on this Mexico cruise in the vibrant Gulf of California. This 15-day expedition offers the opportunity to explore Baja's wild shores and desert islands alongside National Geographic professionals.

Explore the Sea of Cortez, a World Heritage Site, for 8 days aboard the 66-guest Safari Voyager. Experience Baja's warm crystalline waters and cactus-clad rims while watching for birds, whales, dolphins, mobula rays, whale sharks and other marine life.

Baja Cruises

Baja California is the second-longest peninsula in the world. Extending from the southern U.S. the Baja peninsula borders the Pacific Ocean on the west, and the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) on the east. Take a Baja mexico cruise down the breathtaking western coastline to experience some of the most pristine beaches in the Pacific, and most notably, the sheltered lagoons of Magdalena Bay and San Ignacio Lagoon, where gray whales migrate to give birth during winter. Around the southern tip or horn of the peninsula is the Los Cabos region. Find bird sanctuaries, the Cabo Pulmo National Park marine reserve and Land’s End, where the iconic “El Arco” rock formation marks the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez.

Between Baja California’s eastern coast and Mexico’s mainland is a unique body of water famously known to be crystal-clear and rich with sea life. Often called the “Aquarium of the World,” the Sea of Cortez is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one-third of Earth’s marine mammal species. Visit the vibrant seaside towns of Loreto and La Paz then a Sea Cortez small ship cruise to some of the 244 islands like Espíritu Santo, Los Islotes and Santa Catalina. Watch dolphins, whales and rays from the bow of a Baja cruise ship, or don a snorkel and mask for even closer aquatic exploration. AdventureSmith’s Baja cruises reveal the hidden gems of this wilderness paradise in our own backyard.

Planning Baja Mexico Cruises

There’s still time to book Baja cruises 2024. Compared to other exotic destinations where booking up to a year and a half before is a must, Baja cruises can be booked closer to departure. Timing A Baja Cruise for Weather & Wildlife

The typical season for Baja small ship cruises begins in December and continues through May. Within this time frame are sub-seasons: December through mid-January is the early season when weather is coolest making hiking pleasant. In April, temperatures grow increasingly warmer with excellent opportunities for snorkeling. If gray whale watching is your goal, consider traveling during the height of their calving season, which begins in mid-January and runs through mid-March. What Travelers Say About Their Baja Mexico Cruise

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew. Getting small groups into snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or scenic boating was amazing!

We most enjoyed swimming with the Sea Lions, watching our kids play with them and the trip to watch the whales. And the snorkeling. And the hiking. And the burro ride. And and and.....

Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. The scenery, the accommodations, the activities, the staff on the ship all combined for a winner of a week. Our cozy cabin on the ship was all that we needed. The meals blew me away. This particular trip was a good value for all that we received.

I truly don't think it could have been better. Prepare for a real adventure, geared for most 'age groups'!

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew.

Accommodations Review

I thought our cabin was in the perfect location. We had a gorgeous view and no one could walk past our window. We were also close to the lounge and dining room.

Meals Review

Snacks at 4 pm instead of 5 pm or 6 pm would have been nice.

Crew & Guides Review

Jeremy did a terrific job of organizing our activities. Getting small groups into snorkeling, or kayaking, or hiking, or scenic boating was amazing! We felt very safe snorkeling.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Your packing list was fine but the boat provided binoculars and water bottles so we didn't need to pack them. [Our Adventure Specialist] was very helpful in choosing a cabin.

Jeremy, Sara, Lindsey, JP, Megan. All very professional, safety conscious, informative, and FUN. It was special seeing familiar faces in the crew and enjoying new ones. Our whole family really enjoyed the experience.

As always everything was great. Thanks! We're ready for the next one.

Our trip on the Westward was wonderful! Captain Bill and his crew were exemplary in all ways, and did their utmost to ensure complete passenger satisfaction on all levels. Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

Though rooms are very small on the boat, which was to be expected, they are comfortable. The boat wasn't completely finished when we boarded it, so there were a few items missing in the staterooms (i.e. mirrors in the cabins, hooks to hang anything on, door jambs, etc.)

There was also a lot of finishing construction being done on one of the staterooms, so there was some dust and smells, and noises. We were all good sports about it, and amazed at the transformations that occurred during our trip.

Chef Tracie is a magician in the kitchen!  Her meals were incredible --tasty, creative, healthy and filling. It was always so much fun to see what she prepared. It was also fun to watch her work in the kitchen, whipping up cuisine with influences from all over the globe. She also made great use of the fresh fish, scallops and clams that our naturalist guide Carlos secured for her.  Mealtimes were delightful! Tracie also goes out of her way to make sure that passengers' dietary needs are adhered to, so no worries if you are gluten free, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, etc.

The material provided ahead of time was ample and we particularly appreciated the suggested book list. We did not know, however, that the boat wasn't fully completed until we got on it. We would have appreciated knowing this information prior to our trip.

Our naturalist guide Carlos did a fabulous job introducing us to the flora and fauna of Baja. He is very knowledgeable and interesting, and has a great sense of humor. He patiently answered all of our questions, told us great stories and helped the group in so many ways. He is kind, warm and engaging, with years of experience (kayak guide, snorkeling/diving expert, wildlife specialist, safety/first aid, etc.). We truly enjoyed his company.

Captain Bill is a very experienced seaman who always puts safety first. We felt very secure with him at the helm. He is incredibly personable and a great storyteller, and adds so much to the experience. Bill does everything possible to make his passengers happy and fulfill their needs and wishes. He aims to please, like the rest of his crew, who treat their passengers as family.

The engineer and carpenter, Randy, was also an integral crew member, who added much to the overall experience. He is a very kind man and incredibly skillful at his work, who also possesses a great sense of humor with many stories to tell. We were in awe of the work he did on the ship, while we were onboard.

Traveler Advice

Follow the guidelines provided in regards to items and clothing to bring, as the list is very thorough. Although there is hiking, heavy hiking boots are not necessary. A pair of gym shoes is fine. Reading some of the books suggested is helpful to provide you with some knowledge of the area prior to your trip. Don't over pack, as you can wash your clothes in your sink and hang them dry up on deck.

  • Westward Voyages in the Sea of Cortez

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. Plenty of relaxation, wonderful food immaculately presented, not to mention the exciting activities. I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. The scenery, the accommodations, the activities, the staff on the ship all combined for a winner of a week. I have wanted to go to the Baja for years, but didn't think I could ever afford to do it in the way that Uncruise did it. Now I'm finally at a point in my life where I can afford it, but also this particular trip was a good value for all that we received. We met two couples on this trip that we plan to see again. What a great bonus!

Our cozy cabin on the ship was all that we needed. The fact that the cabins were cleaned/attended to daily made the small space do-able.

The meals blew me away. Not only were the meals healthful and thoughtfully planned, but special requests were honored with a smile. I enjoyed always having options, and everything I tried was delicious. I feel that the selection of beers and wines could stand to be looked at again. Some were good, and some just didn't add much to the dining experience.

All of the guides had a great level of enthusiasm, and were ready to help in any way that they could. Lindsey from Montana was exceptionally helpful and caring. Liz gave an excellent massage. Esa brought smoothies after our yoga class one morning. Jeremy had great knowledge to share on our desert hikes.

Itinerary Review

I was really there for the snorkeling, which was great, but I literally had tears streaming down my face when we encountered a blue whale one evening. I had not expected to be lucky enough to see one, and the sound of the whale exhaling as it surfaced in front of our boat is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the experience of being in the midst of an explosion of life. Combined with the remoteness, this was a good combination for me. There were no places that I did not enjoy. On the last night of the trip, we were treated to a slide show of the week's activities, put together by the staff.

Transportation Review

We made airport transfers on our own, so I cannot comment on that part, but all transport during the trip was great. The suggestion to stay at El Encanto the day before we met the group was a good one.

The intro materials about the Baja could stand to be bulked up a little.

Be prepared for the trip of a lifetime!

I truly don't think it could have been better.

Excellent. They were kind enough to meet my vegan requests!

All superb...especially appreciated Merith and Mike. Also, the on-ship personnel were great, in particular Jennie and Josh, stewards.

Liked them all! [I most enjoyed] hikes on the islands and skiff tours. Made most everything available to all.

Prepare for a real adventure, geared for most 'age groups'!

Say hello to sunny beaches and adventure-filled exploration on a Cabo cruise with Princess®. Dive below the water’s surface to see colorful marine life, or zipline through the canyons to take in the views from above. During an overnight stay in Cabo, shop for artisan crafts by day, then dine beachside by night. With convenient roundtrip travel from Los Angeles, relaxation and adventure is never too far away.

Cruise to Cabo San Lucas port

Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is surrounded by clear waters, sun-kissed beaches and the majestic rock formation, El Arco. While it’s one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, El Arco is also a haven for sea lions. On a Cabo cruise, sail by catamaran under the famous arch to see these wildlife, and enjoy an afternoon relaxing on the secluded shores of Lover’s Beach.

What to Do on a Cruise to Cabo

On a Cabo cruise with Princess, bring your wildest vacation dreams to life.

Medano Beach

Deep sea fishing, san jose del cabo.

No cruise to Cabo is complete without a trip to El Arco. Separating the Pacific Ocean from the Sea of Cortez, this landmark is more than just a rock formation, it’s an emblem of the Baja Peninsula. Travel past El Arco on board a catamaran and look for the sea lions that play nearby. Then make your way to Lover’s Beach and relish in relaxation as you unwind shoreside.

As one of the most popular beaches in Cabo, Medano Beach is an adventurer’s playground. Relax on the golden shores, kayak with loved ones or set out on a parasailing expedition, where you can enjoy views of the shore from above. From marlin and swordfish to tuna and grouper, these waters are home to a wide variety of marine life, making it one of the finest sportfishing destinations in the world. With a local fisherman as your guide, embark on a deep-sea exploration and cast your rod into adventure.

Teeming with charm and character, San Jose del Cabo invites you to step back in time as you tour its colorful streets. With preserved 18th-century architecture, the city still holds true to its Spanish colonial personality. On a Mexico cruise to Cabo, enjoy a scenic car ride from the port to this historical town. Wander along La Plaza, stroll through art galleries and visit the San Jose del Cabo Church.

Cabo excursions

Our shore excursions redefine cruise vacations. Board a pirate ship and sail along the coast to learn about the Riviera’s rich history. Snorkel through the turquoise waters alongside your guide, who can bring you up close to coral reefs and colorful marine life.
