27 top things to do in mobile, alabama.

Mobile is known for the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the U.S., among other historic attractions and events.

Top Things to Do in Mobile, AL

Dauphin Street in Mobile, Alabama

Visit Mobile

Historic Dauphin Street in Mobile, Alabama, preserves the city's French heritage and architecture.

Situated on the Gulf Coast, Mobile, Alabama, is rich in history and culture, and visitors to this port city will find plenty to do, from uncovering the fascinating history of the Clotilda – the last-known slave ship to arrive in the U.S. – to celebrating Carnival at the country's oldest Mardi Gras event. Read on to discover the best things to do in Mobile.

Clotilda: The Exhibition at Africatown Heritage House

Clotilda: The Exhibit at Africatown Heritage House in Mobile, Alabama

Courtesy of History Museum of Mobile

In 1860, a ship carrying 110 Africans illegally entered the U.S. in the middle of the night – more than five decades after international slave trade had been outlawed. Upon arrival, the captives were offloaded and the Clotilda was burned in an attempt to hide the crime. Rumors of the ship's existence lingered until 2019, when the ship was finally discovered in the Mobile River. Now, artifacts from the Clotilda are on display at the newly opened Africatown Heritage House in Mobile. Clotilda: The Exhibit largely focuses on the men, women and children of the Clotilda, including their lives in West Africa, their enslavement in the U.S. and their eventual freedom.

Attend the Mardi Gras festival

Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama

Courtesy of Visit Mobile

Every year Mardi Gras – which means "Fat Tuesday" in French – falls the day before Ash Wednesday and caps off the weekslong period of wintertime revelry known as Carnival. While North America's first known unofficial celebration of Mardi Gras took place near present-day New Orleans in 1699, Mobile's first Mardi Gras festival, which took place a few years later, kicked off what's considered the oldest annual Carnival in the U.S.

The celebration in Mobile, which begins two and a half weeks before Fat Tuesday, typically occurs between February and early March, depending on the year. Claim your spot on the street in downtown Mobile early for one of the parades and enjoy the colorful floats as they pass by. Keep an eye and a hand out for Moon Pies and beads, which parade participants toss to observers. Travelers call Mardi Gras in Mobile a fun and family-friendly celebration, especially if you've never seen something like it, and appreciate the intimacy of the festivities when compared to bigger Mardi Gras destinations like New Orleans.

Whether or not you're in Mobile for Mardi Gras, the Mobile Carnival Museum can give you an excellent look into the history of one of the oldest annual festivals in the U.S. You'll get the chance to learn about how locals design their costumes and floats, see historical photographs of the celebration dating back to the 19th century, check out various artifacts – including the crowns, scepters and robes of past Mardi Gras monarchs – and even get a picture of yourself as royalty. Past visitors say the memorabilia has been well preserved and recommend talking to the staff members to learn more about the festival's history.

USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park

tours of mobile alabama

The USS Alabama made its first voyage during World War II and was deemed "Heroine of the Pacific." While the federal government outlined plans to scrap the battleship in 1962, Mobile residents and other Alabamians proposed a different outcome, and USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park opened just a few years later.

Visitors can take a tour of the inside of the USS Alabama, as well as the USS Drum, which is currently the oldest U.S. submarine on display to the public. You can also check out tanks, boats and artillery from various wars around the park. Step into the Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion and see the collection of planes, vehicles and other artifacts, and be sure to explore the grounds and memorials to veterans from all wars. Parkgoers call this attraction a must if you're planning to be in Mobile and say it offers an incredible perspective of the soldiers who have served in past wars.

Today the shallow inlet – the average depth is just 10 feet – offers a variety of aquatic activities for the whole family to enjoy. Rent a kayak, paddleboard or canoe and spend a few hours exploring the water. Some operators provide guided tours and cruises on the bay, including sunset, brunch and murder mystery cruises. Mobile Bay also has more than 30 miles of white sand beaches for play and relaxation, but you may want to take a ferry or drive down south to Dauphin Island, one of the best beaches in Alabama . tours of mobile alabama

This Greek Revival mansion was built in 1855 as a second home for Judge John Bragg and his family, allowing them to enjoy the social season in Mobile when they weren't at their cotton plantation near Montgomery. Donated to the city by its last private owner, the A.S. Mitchell family, the 20-room mansion now serves as a museum depicting life in the South during that time. Guided tours immerse you in the historic furnishings and stories of the previous owners. Past museum patrons highly recommend a tour, saying the guides' narration makes the house come alive and gives an excellent glimpse into the Civil War era. Note that the museum sometimes closes for private events, so consider calling ahead for schedule updates before your visit.

Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail

With so much cultural and ethnic diversity in Mobile's past and present, take the time to explore some of the area's Black history. The more than 40 stops along the city's African-American Heritage Trail help bring Black stories in the area to life. The trail's historical sites in particular highlight the early Creoles of color; survivors from the Clotilda; newly freed Black people who built and worshipped at some of Alabama's oldest churches; African Americans who settled on what is now Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue; and civil rights advocates who fought for desegregation.

Travelers can traverse this historic trail by taking a self-guided driving or walking tour with online maps and narration . For a guided experience, make a reservation for a docent to lead a walking tour downtown or board your bus to narrate. However you choose to experience these points of interest, you'll get to learn about the former slave market, the community of Africatown and a rural school called the Emerson Institute, which produced a diverse curriculum amid the Jim Crow era, among other sites.

Colonial Fort Condé

This French colonial fort – first built in 1723 mostly by enslaved African men, making it a stop on the African-American Heritage Trail – provided protection to the residents of Mobile for more than 100 years under various colonial powers and names, including Fort Charlotte. The original fort was mostly destroyed, with its remnants rediscovered in 1966. A decade later, a replica of a portion of the fort was completed at a slightly smaller scale. Travelers can visit Fort Condé today by paying admission to the History Museum of Mobile. You'll be able to witness live reenactments involving soldiers, craftsmen and pirates; test your aim at the shooting gallery; visit the armory; and even try to solve an escape room with your kids. Past visitors advise that the fort alone isn't worth the price of admission to the museum, but it can be a great addition to your overall experience at the History Museum of Mobile.

Wintzell's Oyster House

With one location downtown and another in west Mobile, Wintzell's Oyster House began as a oyster bar with a mere six stools in 1938. More than 80 years later, the restaurant is a Gulf Coast tradition, offering an array of fresh seafood and other Southern comfort favorites. It also has family-style meals for takeout if you'd rather avoid the crowds. Foodies call the restaurant a must for seafood enthusiasts, particularly if you enjoy fresh oysters, and point to the ambiance of the restaurant and the attentive staff as well.

Richards-DAR House Museum

This 1860s Italianate-style townhome – built by Captain Charles G. Richards and his wife Caroline Elizabeth Steele – remained in the Richards family until 1946, when it was sold to a cement company. After the home was donated to the city, it was restored by four local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution organization in 1973. The DAR-maintained museum is famous for its four seasons iron lace and other elegant furnishings throughout. You can take a guided tour of the 10,000-square-foot home and envision what life was like for the Richards family during their tenure in the home. Past guests say the tour is full of stories for each room of the house and the guides exude Southern hospitality.

There's also a butterfly garden to browse while you're in the area. If you've never seen alligators outside of a zoo or aquarium, Gator Boardwalk can be a great place to see them in their own habitat. Keep in mind that there's no guarantee you'll see any alligators while you're strolling the boardwalk, but visitors say it's enjoyable regardless of whether you're lucky enough to spot one. Just remember not to feed any gators you see.

The Oakleigh House is the oldest house museum in Mobile. Built in 1833 by James W. Roper, this Greek Revival-style house has witnessed many historical periods and events in Mobile and the surrounding area, including the cotton trade, slavery, the Civil War, Emancipation, railroad expansion, epidemics and more. A guided, hourlong tour leads patrons through the house museum's authentic period rooms, providing a view of Mobile history through the eyes of Oakleigh's inhabitants. You'll also be able to visit the Union barracks, built on the property around 1866, which tell a story of Emancipation and Reconstruction in the post-Civil War South. Past guests say the architecture of the home is simple but beautiful, and the artifacts throughout the home are unique compared to similar museums.

Mobile Museum of Art

The city's art museum houses more than 6,400 pieces of fine and decorative art from America, Europe and Asia in its permanent collection (though not all of them are on view at all times). The Mobile Museum of Art's collection includes selections ranging from contemporary artwork all the way back to classical antiquity. The museum also hosts various special exhibitions throughout the year, highlighting select media and artists. If you have the time, you can also check if your visit coincides with any of the art classes offered for adults and children that may focus on pottery, jewelry making, glass fusing or other art forms. Outside, you can walk the sculpture trail, which features a couple dozen sculptures in a variety of media. Museumgoers say you can get through the whole collection in about an hour, but many recommend staying a bit longer to get the full experience.

Meaher State Park

Fewer than 10 miles east of downtown Mobile, Meaher State Park is a great place to experience the Mobile Bay wetlands for the day or even overnight. The park is just one stop on the Coastal Alabama Birding Trail, so you can hike as little or as long as you'd like before enjoying opportunities for boating and picnicking. Fishing on the 300-foot pier is often another traveler favorite (though the pier was closed for repairs at the time of publication). You can go to Meaher State Park just to take in the natural wonder of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, the second largest delta in the contiguous U.S., known as "America's Amazon" because it's the most biodiverse river system in North America. Note that there's a modest park entry fee for day use. If you want to stay overnight, the state park has improved tent sites and RV sites. Past visitors appreciate Meaher State Park's beautiful views and quiet, peaceful atmosphere.

Mobile Flea Market

Billed as the largest flea market on the Gulf Coast, the Mobile Flea Market hosts more than 800 vendors every weekend year-round. Browse a wide variety of wares from all over the world; there are also six concession stands so you don't have to leave to get a bite to eat. Note, however, that the market is not pet-friendly and charges a small fee to enter. Some past visitors say the market has a vibrant atmosphere with a lot of fascinating items, but others say that the quality and price of goods can be hit or miss.

Mobile Botanical Gardens

Established in 1974, the 106-acre Mobile Botanical Gardens claims to have the largest collection of plants on the Gulf Coast. As you walk the various trails in the gardens, admire the collection of azaleas, the pollinator garden, Japanese maples and camellias, among other sights. There's also 35 acres of conservation forest area growing the second generation of pines that were logged in the early 1900s: The land on which the gardens are situated used to be part of a massive longleaf pine forest. Before you go, check the event calendar for occasional botanical art classes or join in on the weekly garden sketch club. If you're traveling with children, ask for some fish food at the office so your youngsters can feed the fish in the koi pond – as well as a kids activity backpack, complete with scavenger hunts, fun facts, a sample of honey from the botanical gardens and more. Past visitors say the shaded trails and lovely flora are made more pleasant by the friendly and helpful staff.

The park is also home to a U.S. Coast Guard Monument, which is dedicated to the people who have served in that branch of the armed forces and its predecessor agencies in Mobile since 1819. Both locals and tourists enjoy stepping away from the downtown area to take a break at the park, lounging and watching the water traffic.

Located in the heart of Mobile's historic downtown, the Alabama Contemporary Art Center is dedicated to highlighting and supporting the work of living artists. The center is a noncollecting museum, which means it doesn't have any permanent exhibits. Instead, this attraction typically has a few temporary exhibits running at a time, so if you travel to Mobile regularly, you'll experience something different every time. Museum programming may include performances, talks, dance parties, panel discussions and programs for children; consult the museum's website for upcoming events. Past guests say the art center has a low-key atmosphere and can have some unique exhibits, but some suggest checking before your visit to determine if the current exhibitions are to your taste.

Hank Aaron Childhood Home and Museum

Note: The Hank Aaron Childhood Home and Museum is currently closed. It will be moved from Hank Aaron Stadium (which closed in 2022) to a new location and will reopen for tours at a later date.

If you're a fan of America's pastime, you can't miss the childhood home of baseball legend Hank Aaron, who grew up in Mobile. Visit to learn about Aaron's life, his family and the history of baseball in Mobile. You'll also be able to see memorabilia from Aaron's professional baseball career, including his Golden Glove Award, home-run record trophy and original Louisville Slugger bat design.

Visitors say the museum provides an inspiring and charming tribute to one of the top baseball players of all time. You can also spend some time in Henry "Hank" Aaron Park, a couple blocks from where his childhood home originally sat, to further honor this famed Black player.

Airboat Adventures

tours of mobile alabama

For a unique experience on the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, check out Airboat Adventures in Spanish Fort, a little more than 5 miles east of Mobile. The operator provides 30-minute or hourlong tours, with the latter option giving you the chance to stop for pictures and get more education about the area.

Sometimes, Airboat Adventures may also offer night tours, where you'll have a better chance to see alligators, as well as sunset tours; bowfishing from an airboat can also be a fun experience when it's available. Note that each tour type has its own requirement for a minimum number of guests, starting at four people. Past guests rave about the captains' knowledge and stories of the delta and say that while the tour goes by quickly, it's well worth the price.

15 Fun Things to Do in Mobile Alabama on a US Gulf Coast Getaway

Our list of fun things to do in Mobile Alabama include cool museums, fun outdoor adventures, Southern history, amazing restaurants, and much more. And did you know that Mobile is the real home of Mardi Gras? More about that later.

Thank you to Visit Mobile Alabama for hosting McCool Travel.

Mobile Alabama is the largest US Gulf Coast city between New Orleans and St Petersburg , Florida. In the year 1702, Mobile served as the first capital of France’s New World colony, La Louisiane. Today, Mobile is the capital of the area called LA (Lower Alabama) by residents and locals and the gateway to the exciting Eastern Shore and Alabama Beaches.

Getting to Mobile Alabama . Mobile AL is located along interstate highway I-10 about a two-hour drive from New Orleans and 3 1/2 hours from Tallahassee Florida. Drivers from Atlanta can reach Mobile in about five hours on interstate highways I-85 and I-65.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines fly into Mobile Regional Airport. More airlines fly into Pensacola airport, about a one-hour drive from Mobile.

Many popular Carnival cruises to the Caribbean depart from Mobile harbor on Carnival Fantasy .

Fun Things to Do in Mobile Alabama

This custom Mobile AL map features places mentioned in this article.

1. USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park

USS Alabama and USS Drum are two of the four National Historic Landmarks in Mobile Alabama. See other two below (in our ‘things to do in Mobile future visits” section).

In 1964 children from Mobile schools raised $100,000 in nickels and pennies to save the USS Alabama from a salvage yard in Bremerton, Washington. It was then towed here, at the end traversing a three mile dredged channel. USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park houses USS Alabama, USS Drum, and dozens of historic military aircraft.

view of USS Alabama battleship in Mobile AL

Choose from three self guided tours of the floating city. Learn about the ice cream shop, chapel, baseball team (Hall of Famer Bob Feller played on it), orchestra, and the 2,500 people who worked aboard. USS Alabama earned nine battlestars and its big guns were accurate to 21 miles. No USS Alabama crew members were lost in battles.

USS Alabama is transitioning into a WW2 museum and 36 rooms will have sound effects. Visit the fascinating diver exhibit which opened this past October. Re-enactments occur five times a year, with vintage planes flying overhead and propane powered guns battling them. Visiting then would be a fun thing to do in Mobile with children.

Near USS Alabama, the USS Drum is the oldest US submarine on public display. It sank 15 enemy battleships and earned 12 battlestars.

See our USS Alabama video .

2. Where to Stay in Mobile AL

When planning your visit, consider our favorite Mobile Alabama hotels.

The Admiral Hotel Mobile, Curio Collection by Hilton

The Admiral Hotel Mobile is a boutique hotel property just a block from the downtown Mobile action. On hot days, refresh yourself in the outdoor pool or at the Corner Bar.

Battle House Mobile AL

Battle House Renaissance is a four star, restored historic hotel, and is close to the Mobile Convention Center. The Battle House is a member of the Historic Hotels of America, has Mobile’s only four star restaurant, and you must experience the whispering arches.

Grand Hotel

The  Grand Hotel  Golf Resort & Spa in Pointe Clear—between Mobile and Gulf Shores —is changing perceptions of Alabama. Its Alabama hospitality (a step beyond Southern hospitality), loyal employees (many over 40 years), repeat visitors (for several generations), and admirable focus on sustainability make Grand Hotel a fantastic getaway location.

Another unique event that the Grand Hotel celebrates is known as a Jubilee—which only occurs here and in Japan. Jubilees occur only when conditions are right—on warm summer nights, often in pre-dawn hours, with a full moon—they take on the aspect of a joyous community beach party, adding yet another reason why this corner of Alabama is treasured as a one-of-a-kind destination.

Backcountry Camping in Mobile

Really adventurous and intrepid explorers should look into the Tensaw Delta platforms. See information below.

3. GulfQuest National Maritime Museum

The GulfQuest National Maritime Museum represents all of the Gulf of Mexico. Before entering GulfQuest, look at the building from the parking lot. The lot was flooded by Katrina and is 8’ above the river level. The first floor is 16’ above water and the building is designed to look like a ship—with bow and bridge, stairwells are life boats, cafe is called Galley, and gift shop is Treasures.

Inside GulfQuest, learn about the Gulf of Mexico’s people, history, geography, and more. Pay attention to the maritime sayings on the hand rails when walking up or down levels and be surprised by the dozens of everyday terms with origins from the sea.

Definitely make time to steer your own cargo ship on the top level. Other games, activities, and displays sprinkled throughout the building will inform and entertain you. Learn how containers changed the world’s history. Containerization started here in Mobile and when Malcolm McLean invented the container cargo ship. See our GulfQuest containerization photo .

4. Mobile Carnival Museum

Did you know that the first Mardi Gras in USA was in Mobile Alabama in 1830?

Indeed, Mardi Gras is big business. Mobile Mardi Gras generated $400 million to Mobile’s economy in 2019. Learn about the 73 Mobile mystic societies and view the world’s largest collection of Mardi Gras coat trains at the Mobile Carnival Museum.

The Mobile Carnival Museum offers three guided tours a day plus a self guided tour any time. They also own the second largest animal folk piece in world, valued at $2 million.

5. History Museum of Mobile

Visit the History Museum of Mobile for a fascinating journey through all historic eras of Mobile up to the present. Permanent exhibits detail history of Native American artifacts through Old Mobile, Confederate Naval History, Civil Rights, and current history in the making. Temporary exhibits change every few months.

See our photo of Hank Aaron’s 754th home run ball .

6. Gulf Coast Exploreum  Science Center

Try the dozens of hands-on science adventures at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center in downtown Mobile. See our Genghis Khan exhibit photos  from its 2019 visit here. Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center is one of the most fun things to do in Mobile for families.

7. #LiquidRoadTrip on a Kayak with WildNative Tours

Exploring the 250,000 acre Tensaw Delta on a kayak tour with WildNative Tours  is one of our favorite things to do in Mobile Alabama. On one morning liquid road trip paddle I learned that Alabama has more navigable waterways than any state, that Tensaw Delta is the 2nd (or 3rd) largest delta in the USA, and that the blooming of Choctaw lilies marks the start of spring.

Stay in one of the dozen primitive camping platforms for a real special experience. Visit the 5 Rivers Alabama Delta Resource Center and say hello to Wahlberg the resident owl.

8. Conde-Charlotte Museum

Operated and owned by National Society of Colonial Dames of Alabama (Mobile chapter), the Conde-Charlotte Museum displays Mobile’s history under five separate flags. The building served as Mobile’s original jail (until 1848) and as a private residence since Jonathan and Elizabeth Kirkbride bought the place in 1850.

Colonial French decor at Conde-Charlotte Museum

The Conde-Charlotte Museum rooms are arranged according to the timeline of occupation. French arrived in 1702 to settle the area. In 1763, the British came and named the fort after King George’s wife, Charlotte. When the Spanish arrived in 1780, they set up a water system.

9. Fun Things to Do in Mobile Alabama: Walking Tours

Bienville bites food tour.

The LoDa (Lower Dauphin) walking tour from Bienville Bites Food Tour is a fantastic way to experience a few of Mobile Alabama’s amazing restaurants.

On this tour, we enjoyed Mobile’s best gumbo at The Royal Scam, Laotian/Southern/seafood fusion at Von’s Bistro (now closed), two items on Alabama’s 100 Dishes to Eat Before You Die  (praline at Three Georges and crawfish/spinach dip at Heroes Sports Bar), amazing BBQ at Moe’s (but also get their killer Bushwhacker), and the remarkable oysters at Wintzell’s.

In between bites, our guide Meghan provided interesting and entertaining Mobile trivia and history. I miss those oysters!

Secret History Prohibition Tour

Todd Duren leads Secret History Tours around Mobile Alabama. On his Secret History Prohibition Tour we visit several Mobile Alabama dive bars, drink some Prohibition-era cocktails, and learn about Mobile history. We also just happened to chance upon a set for a major motion picture.

Avenue of the Oaks at Spring Hill College

OK, this is not a formal walking tour nor is it in downtown Mobile but, my goodness, you have to experience the Avenue of the Oaks at Spring Hill College.

Avenue of the Oaks at Spring Hill College

I last visited a couple of weeks after graduation—during which, I am told, the sight is even more spectacular (with magnolias is full bloom). So, even though I do not currently know any students there, I definitely gotta return for graduation week to see the magnolias!

This is one of our favorite Gulf Coast Photo Locations For Fun Instagrammable Shots.

Joe Cain’s Grave at Old Church Street Cemetery

The Church Street Cemetery (aka Church Street Graveyard) opened in 1819 outside then Mobile downtown but now is surrounded by churches, public library, and other commercial buildings. Among the historic people buried here are Joe Cain, considered the founder of USA’s Mardi Gras phenomenon.

Old Joe Cain tombstone with Mardi Gras beads

10. The Fort of Colonial Mobile

In 1702, the first fort was built 27 miles away at—the conveniently named—27 Mile Bluff. A second fort was built on the current Mobile site in 1723 while the current fort is a 1/3 size re-creation built in 1976 to celebrate the USA bicentennial. Walk through the history of the Fort of Colonial Mobile and experience 18th century lifestyle in Mobile.

11. Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

In 1703, the first Catholic parish anywhere on the US Gulf Coast was established in Mobile. Bishop Michael Portier—the first Catholic Bishop of Mobile as of 1829—envisioned this grand and majestic cathedral. Construction of the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile began in 1835 and building was dedicated in 1850 by Bishop Portier (he died in 1859).

On Cathedral Square, in front of the building, Satchel Paige was flinging oyster shells and was first “discovered” and signed to a baseball contract.

See our Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception photos .

12. Hank Aaron Childhood Home and Museum

The house where Hank Aaron grew up moved to its current location next to the minor league stadium. Visitors will find mementos of his childhood and playing days inside. The Hank Aaron Childhood Home and Museum is a great pilgrimage stop for baseball and civil rights fans.

McCool Travel note : as of February 2023, the Hank Aaron Childhood Home and Museum was closed for tours. Check back for current operating conditions before planning a visit.

CRUISES & TOURS

Dolphin sightings, mobile bay dolphin sighting.

Mobile Bay Adventures offers families and small groups, up to 6 people full or half-day fishing charters with emphasis on dolphing sightings in Mobile Bay along the Eastern Shore. Dolphin pods are routinely spotted fishing on the reefs along the Eastern Shore and the Intercoastal Waterway. Sighting dolphin the way we locals have been doing it for years is just one of many enjoyable things you experience when cruising 45 minutes to the Gulf.

Full-day charters include wetting a line at reefs along the Eastern Shore and sightings in the intercoastal waterway. You can include stopping for dinner or luch  at any of the Marina Restuarants along the way.

Arnica Bay dolphin sightings will travel southeast through the Intercoastal Waterway, passing Wolf Bay, Bayou La Launch to our destination in Arnica Bay in waters off Orange Beach, Alabama. right to the heart of numerous restaurants, marinas, secluded beaches and boating activity. On this charter not only can you wet a line, you will see beautiful landscapes, wildlife, yachts and a feel for what living on the water is really like!

Full-day charters also include a tour of Ingram Bayou, a protected anchoring with calm water, wildlife and dolphin. Many locals stop here and throw out rafts to swim, picnic and enjoy the scenery.

Our Navy Cove Charter travels to the southern end of Mobile Bay where dolphin can routinely be sighted along Fort Morgan and Navy Cove.

Our full-day charters can combine the best of all worlds on the water from wetting a line to  dolphin sightings and swimming either in fresh water or saltwater beaches. Fish and Magnolia Rivers are popular freshwater areas where you can bring lunch on board or dock at Big Daddy's Pub. “Devils Hole” or the “ICE BOX,” selected by Alabama Living in 2018 are two of the top Natural Swimming Holes in Alabama and one of the last waterways to receive  U.S. Postal Mail Delivery by water.

Middle Bay Light-House

sand-island-lighthouse

Sand Island Lighthouse

Middle Bay Lighthouse built in 1885 is one of the last “screw-pile” lighthouses left standing in the United States. This light house sits near the Mobile Ship Channel where visitors often see Oil Tankers, Cruise Ships, Shrimp Trawlers, even Warships traveling in or out of Mobile Port. It’s very common to also see pods of dolphin feeding around the Middle Bay Lighthouse or the ship channel.

Sand Island lighthouse is the beacon for mariners coming from the Gulf of Mexico and entering Mobile Bay. From this view of the lighthouse, you can also see Historic Fort Morgan to your east and Historic Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island to your west.  Depending on the tides, you might also experience the “tide-line” where Mobile Bay brackish water meets the Saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico forming a distinct change in the color of the water.

Weather permitting you can also see some breathtaking Sunsets upon returning to the launch.

SUNSETS ON MOBILE BAY

Without a doubt, clear or partly cloudy days on Mobile Bay offer spectacular Sunsets from the Eastern Shore. We offer charters in North Bay with the Mobile Skyline and USS Alabama in the background, in Middle Bay with Middle Bay Lighthouse in the background and South Mobile Bay with the Dauphin Island Bridge in the background.

Mobile Bay fishing charters on North Mobile Bay is a perfect way to end a fabulous day on the water or an amazing complement to a dining experience at The Blue Gill, The Oyster Bar or Ralph & Kacoos on the causeway.

MOBILE BAY ECO SYSTEM

Mobile Bay Adventures offers half-day charters in the Mobile Tensaw River Delta and the Weeks Bay Watershed.  Afternoon tours launch from the Causeway for the Mobile Delta and Hwy 98 Fish River Bridge in Fairhope for Weeks Bay.

River Delta

The Mobile Tensaw River Delta is Alabama’s largest wetland ecosystem and the second largest river delta in the United States. We can target either fresh or saltwater species. The Delta is approximately 45 miles long and covers over 400 square miles of wetland. It is characterized by numerous tributary rivers, streams, bayous and creeks, including the waters of the Tensaw, Tombigbee and Alabama rivers and maintains the areas ecological balance, filtering impurities from approximately 15% of our countries fresh water.

Weeks Bay Watershed

The Weeks Bay Watershed is part of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program encompassing approximately 130,000 acres of southwest Baldwin County. The watershed includes the Fish River and Magnolia River drainage basins as well as several small creeks that enter Weeks Bay directly.

When visiting the Weeks Bay Watershed, we highly recommend that you take the time to visit Weeks Bay Visitor Center to learn about coastal habitats through its exhibits and collections of animals and regional plants and self-guiding nature trails that wind through wetlands, marshes, forests and a pitcher plant bog .

Mobile Bay Adventures offers three-hour charters through the southwest area of the estuary. We cover all of Weeks Bay and the drainage basin of Fish and Magnolia Rivers, including, Turkey Branch and Waterhole Branch in Fish River and Noltie Creek in Magnolia River.

Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun makes cut at the Memorial in PGA Tour debut

  • Published: Jun. 07, 2024, 5:16 p.m.

the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday - Round One

DUBLIN, OHIO - JUNE 06: Jackson Koivun of Auburn makes his PGA TOUR debut during the first round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday at Muirfield Village Golf Club on June 6, 2024 in Dublin, Ohio. (Photo by Tracy Wilcox/PGA TOUR via Getty Images) PGA TOUR

Albeit with no room to spare, Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun did just enough Friday to make the cut at the Memorial Tournament in his debut appearance on the PGA Tour.

He is the first amateur to make the cut at the Memorial since 2009. Koivun made the cut while former major champions including Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark, Lucas Glover and Justin Rose did not.

Koivun is playing as an amateur, meaning he cannot collect a check at the end of the weekend he is now set to play. He made the field by virtue of winning the Jack Nicklaus Award, another major award to add to his sweep of national honors highlighted by the Fred Haskins Award. Auburn assistant coach Chris Williams is serving as Koivun’s caddie.

Nicklaus, the famous 18-time major champion, hosts the event annually at his own designed Muirfield Village golf course in Dublin, Ohio.

“We were walking back after we had just won the national championship, on the 17th green, and we were walking back to the award ceremony and Coach pulled me aside and told me I’m playing this week and I need to start getting everything in order,” Koivun said during a Tuesday press conference at the event. “It was kind of just hit me like a train, because all these emotions from the national championship and then I’m playing this event, which is such a great event and trying to figure out traveling and all that stuff with U.S. Open sectionals, there was an array of emotions, but all good things.”

Koivun is quickly on track to earn a PGA Tour card early through the PGA Tour’s accelerated program , having accrued more than half the required points by the end of his freshman year. Vanderbilt golfer and Mountain Brook native Gordon Sargent is the only player to have earned a Tour card in the newly created accelerated program.

Koivun now has 15 of 20 needed points after making the cut this week. He’ll get an additional point later this summer as an already-announced member of the Palmer Cup team.

  • 3 = D-I Nicklaus Award (2024)
  • 2 = D-I Outstanding Freshman Award (2024)
  • 3 = Haskins Award (2024)
  • 3 = Hogan Award (2024)
  • 3 = Best WAGR rank: 3rd
  • 1 = Made cut at PGA Tour event (2024)

Koivun could earn another point this weekend if he were to climb up into and finish in the top 10. Other point offerings this summer will come at the U.S. Amateur, where he will be among the favorites. The winner gets three points. He’s also a highly likely candidate to make next year’s U.S. Walker Cup team, which would be another two points.

There is an opportunity for Koivun to earn his Tour card before the end of his sophomore year.

Koivun just missed out on a playoff at the Alpharetta, Georgia, U.S. Open final qualifier on Monday before traveling to Ohio for the Memorial. Auburn teammate Brendan Valdes did make the playoff at the same site, but did not land one of the coveted final spots in next week’s U.S. Open.

Koivun played the first two days of the Memorial paired with Brandt Snedeker. Koivun shot an even-par 72 in round one which got him in the top 30 before posting a +4 score on Friday. The eventual cut line was +4.

In his second round, Koivun was five-over-par after 10 holes before making birdies on the 14th and 15th to get him in position to make the cut. Koivun later bogeyed the 18th hole putting his status for the weekend on the fringe.

Making his first PGA Tour appearance is the cap of a breakout freshman season for a player already ranked as a top 10 amateur in the world and the top player in his high school class. Koivun made the top 10 in 12 of 13 events he played.

Koivun won the SEC individual championship and was the top individual at the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, NCAA regional. At the NCAA championships, Koivun got an unlucky break as he hit the flag stick with his approach shot and had his ball roll off the green on the 18th hole in the final round. Had the ball gone in the hole, Koivun would have taken the outright individual lead and had he made a birdie, he would have been tied at the top. Instead, he lost the championship by one shot.

Koivun then went on to help Auburn, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, go on to win the team NCAA title . Auburn completed a sweep of the SEC team title, regional team title and NCAA team title.

New Experiences In Mobile, Alabama Everyone Should Have On Their List

Tuesday, June 11, 2024 9:00 AM by Rebecca Deurlein

tours of mobile alabama

From Southern Living

There are a lot of ways to get to  Mobile : flying into the international airport , driving in on I-10 or I-65 from all over the South, or even sailing in on a Carnival  cruise ship  (Mobile is the cruise line’s homeport). And as the song lyrics go, it doesn't matter how you get here, just get here if you can.

That’s because in the last year or two, Mobile has seen a resurgence of sorts, so much so that even if you’ve partied in the  Home of Mardi Gras  or counted down to the New Year alongside Mobile’s 600-pound electric  MoonPie  drop, you’ll find a fresh repertoire of restaurants, activities, and places to stay.

Here’s what’s new in Mobile and how to make the most of your time on your next visit to Sweet Home Alabama.

Where To Stay

The admiral hotel.

Interior of hotel room

THE ADMIRAL HOTEL

Be one of the first to stay at The Admiral, where hometown boy  Jimmy Buffet  used to play for tips. Built in 1940, it is on the verge of finishing a massive remodel, with guest rooms already complete and booking up fast.

Stay in a modern and quirky room embellished with purple and yellow accents that make every day feel like Mardi Gras. Whimsical touches like a portrait of a zebra dripping its stripes and a brass bulldog crouched on his haunches set these rooms apart from the standard.

The Admiral is just steps away from the bustling Entertainment District filled with restaurants, bars, and history. But before you head out to sample them all, make a reservation at  Le Moyne’s Chophouse , the hotel’s premiere dining spot set to debut in late spring. VISIT MOBILE

Mobile has a burgeoning food and beverage scene appealing to a wide variety of tastes. The best way to sample before committing to a full meal is to join a Bienville Bites Food Tour that takes you through Downtown Mobile’s Lower Dauphin Street Historic District (LoDa).

Launched in 2017 by Chris and Laney Andrews, who just added a curated gift shop so you can take a piece of Mobile home with you, this food tour introduces you to the city’s classic establishments and the new kids on the block. Aside from eating some of the best dishes in Mobile, you’ll learn about the architecture, history, and local culture that make Mobile unique.

Dropout Bakery & Company

REBECCA DEURLEIN

Make sure your day begins on a sweet note at Dropout Bakery & Company, launched just two years ago after owner Lacey Evans dropped out of fashion school, baked her way through COVID, and went viral on Instagram with posts of her culinary creations. There’s usually a line out the door, so grab a coffee, gaze into the glass case of confections, and take your pick. You really can’t go wrong.

Penton's Bistro and the King Bleu Corner Bar

The just-opened Penton’s Bistro and the King Bleu Corner Bar already has the locals talking, and you can be one of the first visitors to check it out. Lunch is casual —think po'boy and pasta salad—and dinner fancies it up with menu items like duck cassolette and potato gnocchi short rib ragu.

What happens when you turn an old Crystal Ice manufacturing plant into an even cooler massive bar? Everyone gets hungry, so you introduce the Velvet Pig, a Southern-style, whole-hog butchery that focuses on local ingredients to make its pork belly skewers and boudin egg rolls, among others. Opened at the end of 2023, it’s found a home in Mobile, and its Alabama HOT Fried Chicken Sandwich has already won hearts.

After years in development, Mobile’s first outdoor food court concept, Box Owt, has opened with a unique twist—all of the restaurants make their home in shipping containers. Four eateries are currently open, with more debuting in the coming months.

For families looking to pare down the cost of dining, options in Box Owt are affordable and surprisingly diverse. Make the kids happy with the ultimate comfort food at Mac & Cheesery, or take your more mature palate on an adventure at Las Catrachas, serving authentic Honduran food.

Things To Do

Visit africatown heritage house.

Interior of Africatown Heritage House Museum

You simply can’t travel to Mobile without a visit to the new Africatown Heritage House. At once painfully real and inspiringly hopeful, the museum documents the 1860 arrival of 110 Africans taken from their homes and transported in the hull of the ship Clotilda. Upon arrival, they were sold as enslaved people, a full 52 years after slavery had been officially abolished.

To cover their tracks, the men behind this crime burned the ship in the Mobile River. That ship was discovered on the river floor in 2019, confirming the terrible crime. But the mission of Africatown Heritage House isn’t only educating visitors about the events—it’s also about the resilience and hope that came years later, when the enslaved were made free and established their own thriving community, Africatown. It’s a don’t-miss on your tour of Mobile.
