Hear From from our Guests

Fabulous 4,000 acre ranch in Ka’a’awa Valley with huge variety of super fun activities from beach to ocean to zip lines to horses, jeeps, buses and more. Breathtakingly beautiful mountains. One of the best places in Hawaii Nei.

Our family took the Jurassic Park tour yesterday. Our son was interested in this and we decided to go. Our tour guide, Sunshine, was wonderful. She knew so many facts about the movies and the ranch, made the tour enjoyable (even for those of us who knew little about the movies), and was an expert in making sure we took pictures. I would highly recommend visiting the ranch!

About Jurassic Park Hawaii on Oahu

Kualoa Ranch makes up 4000 acres of the northern windward side of Oahu and is made up of the Ko’olau Mountains and vibrant green valleys along the picturesque Kaneohe Bay.  It is a working cattle ranch, but is best known by tourists for its famous film locations since the 1950s. In addition to the beaches and valleys, you’ll find an ancient fish pond and gorgeous fruit and plant gardens.

The ranch is open to visitors almost every day of the year, but guided tours are required to visit the valleys and mountain ranges beyond the gift shop. Tours come in all shapes and forms to please everyone on your list from air-conditioned buses to ATVs to boat tours to ziplining.

Getting to Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is located in Kaneohe which is about a 50 minute drive from Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. It is an easy and beautiful drive that we find quite enjoyable.  We always recommend renting a car on Oahu because there is so much to explore! Parking at Kualoa Ranch is free and easy.

Who knew Jurassic Park was so close to Honolulu?!

However, if you do not have a car, you are in luck because Kualoa Ranch offers roundtrip transportation from Honolulu for only $15 per person. You can add this on at the time of your reservation.

*Pro Tip* Upon making your reservation, you will be advised to arrive at Kualoa Ranch no later than 45 minutes before your tour time. Do not overlook this!

We arrived a few minutes after 8:00am for our 8:45am tour. By the time we headed through the gift shop and followed the dinosaur tracks to the check-in line outside, it was about 8:10am. We made it through the long line in time, but just barely! We had five minutes to spare before loading our bus, and the restroom line was too long to be able to use it in time.

CAN’t DECIDE WHICH TOUR TO CHOOSE?

We recommend the best of kualoa package deal.

How to See Jurassic Park Hawaii Movie Spots

The majority of Kualoa Ranch can only be seen by taking one of their numerous Jurassic Park Hawaii tours.

All tours are guided through the gorgeous Ka’a’awa Valley aka Jurassic Park Oahu. Kualoa Ranch offers ten different tour types ranging from mild to adventurous and lasting from one hour to 2.5 hours each.

Due to the popularity of Hawaii and it’s Jurassic Park Valley, it is imperative that you make reservations in advance. Many tours at this Jurassic Park Oahu location sell out 2-3 weeks in advance, especially in summer months.

I have heard WAY too many stories of visitors arriving to Kualoa Ranch in the morning with their favorite activity in mind, but no reservations, and finding that they are booked all day. PLEASE make a reservation!

Here are the Jurassic Park Valley tour options broken down by age requirements so that you can determine which are options for your family. There are also places to relax should some family members wish to stay behind during certain tours. A café, farm animal visiting area, and sculpture garden are all lovely for some down time for little ones.

Jurassic Park Hawaii Tours for all ages (including infants)

Movie sites tour.

Age Restrictions: None | Tour Length: 1.5 hours

The Movie Sites Tour is one of the ranch’s most popular excursions and is highly recommended for movie buffs especially. The tour will stop at several movie locations throughout the Ka’a’wa Valley, including Jurassic World, Fifty First Dates, Hawaii Five-0, LOST, and a WWII Bunker that is filled with movie props from over 60 movies that have filmed on the property.

Note that this is a different valley than the Jungle Expedition tour. If you wish to see both valleys, you may want to consider the Jungle Adventure Tour (ages 3+).

*Pro tip* Sitting on the right side will typically grant you with the best views.

Ocean Voyaging Catamaran Tour – one of our favorite Jurassic Park tours on Oahu

This Voyaging Catamaran Tour at Jurassic Park Oahu is one of our family favorites. You take a open air bus for several minutes through the property  to view the gardens and learn about medicinal properties of the plants and arrive at Secret Island (see separate tour for Secret Island below).

A brief walk through the jungle to the ocean’s edge allows you to board the catamaran. The ride is about 30-40 minutes long, taking you out around Kaneohe Bay with stunning views of the mountains from the water. You also get an up close view of Chinaman’s Hat.

After the catamaran ride, you have the opportunity to ride an outrigger canoe and learn about the ancient fish pond that has been supporting the land and its inhabitants for centuries. The canoe ride also takes you past several movie locations such as Soul Surfer and Fifty First Dates.

*Pro tip* Keep your eye out for turtles in the bay- we spotted a few!

Aloha Aina Farm Tour

This Aloha Aina Farm Tour is best for those interested in the history of Hawaii and its exported goods. On this Jurassic Park tour, you will visit the gardens and ancient fishpond via an open-air trolley. You will also see some of the movie sites filmed on the property – no tour is complete without some Hollywood experiences!

Secret Island Beach Adventure at Jurassic Park Hawaii

Age Restrictions: None | Tour Length: 2.5 hours

I first discovered this gem on my high school graduation trip (many years ago…) and upon visiting Secret Island again recently, I can see why I had such lovely memories of this place! A simple open air bus will drive you through gardens of green on a short ride to this private beach which can only be accessed on the Kualoa Ranch property.

Because only a select number of people can join the tour at one time, the beach stays peaceful and uncrowded with stunning views of Kaneohe Bay. Chinaman’s Hat is clearly visible from the beach and the palm tree lined white sand is postcard perfect.

Several activities are available during your time at Secret Island including stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, glass bottom boats, beach volleyball, table tennis, and hammocks if you just want a nap. They will provide snorkel gear and life jackets as needed.

Don’t forget to pack your beach bag with all the necessities that you won’t want to forget for your afternoon in the sun on this paradise of a beach.

*Pro Tip* Book a morning tour if you wish to snorkel here. The water is clearer in the earlier hours for fish viewing.

Jurassic Park Valley Tours for Ages 3+

All tours listed above plus:

Jungle Adventure Tour (our favorite Jurassic Park tour!)

Age Restrictions: 3+ | Tour Length: 2.5 hours

This Jurassic Adventure Tour is our top pick for tours in Jurassic Valley. This open air ride last 2.5 hours and takes you to Kualoa, Hakipu’u and Ka’a’awa Valleys giving you the best scenic views possible. Beyond the scenery, movie buffs will also loves seeing filming locations and sets from Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, and Fallen Kingdom.

Expect panoramic views on this tour – you won’t be disappointed!

Roads are bumpy on this ride, so be prepared for that. Expectant mothers or those with back issues may prefer a different tour.

Jungle Expedition Tour at Kualoa Ranch

This Jungle Expedition Tour is a great option for families looking for adventure but with littles too young for the more extreme tours. This jeep tour is known for being a bumpy ride! So hold on to your hats and think twice if back issues or motion sickness apply to anyone in your group. Some visitors report that they were given the option of a two vehicles  – one bumpy and one smoother – but don’t count on that!

This tour rewards you with gorgeous views of the real Jurassic Park Valley. You will see filming scenery from Jurassic World, Jumanji, and Lost among others. This tour goes into a completely different valley, Hakapu’u Valley, than the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour. So if you are here to see as much of the real Jurassic Park as possible, you might consider booking both tours or booking the Jurassic Adventure Tour instead which takes you to both valleys.

The guides will enjoy teaching you about the valley and the various plants growing there, often with a bit of humor thrown in. You will also have the opportunity to check out various viewpoints around the ranch, so don’t forget your camera.

At one point on the tour, you will be given the opportunity to take an optional 10 minute hike to the top. The views are stunning from the lookout, but please note, that it is a bit of a strenuous hike and requires appropriate shoes to safely climb rocks and tree roots.

*Pro tip*  Where you choose to sit is everything on this ride!

Want a wild and bumpy ride? Sit in the back! Is it raining? Sit in the front to stay dry! Want to see the best scenery? Sit on the right side! Want a close up of Indominus Rex from Jurassic World? Sit on the left side!

Jurassic Park Valley Tours for Ages 5+

Utv raptor tour.

Age Restrictions: 5+ | Tour Length: 1-2 hour options

The best part of this UTV Raptor tour is that it is family friendly and allows families to ride together in their own vehicle (fits 2 to 6 people). This is similar to the ATV tour except that on this one you can visit with one another and take photos rather than ride as individuals. This tour also allows children, which the ATV tour cannot accommodate.

You will cover a large area of Kualoa Ranch including hills, stream crossings, and gorgeous ridgelines and coastal views. You will view movie locations from Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Jumanji and several others. Kong Skull Island is another highlight of the movie locations on this tour. One adult over 21 years old will be the driver.  You will ride single file in a line with a max speed of 14 MPH to explore the Ka’a’awa Valley. This tour allows you to tour trails deep in the Valley that are not easily accessible to others.

There are one- and two-hour tours available. The areas visited are similar on both Jurassic Valley tours, however, the two-hour tour allows more time for stopping at movie locations and viewpoints for photo taking and learning about the history of the area. One hour is never enough, but will still be wonderful if that is all the time you have.

You are provided with helmets and a safety training video. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty because it is very dusty! Sunglasses are recommended for eye protection.

*Pro tip* Purchase a bandana in the ranch gift shop to cover your face on this DUSTY ride. It will double as a practical and fun souvenir!

Photo packages are available to capture your experience ziplining among the gorgeous mountains. They are currently $40/person or $15 per photo.

*Pro tip* This tour takes the same path as the ATV and UTV Tours, with the same movie sites, so keep this in mind if booking multiple tours.

Jurassic Park Valley Tours for Ages 16+

Age Restrictions: 16+ | Tour Length: 2.5 hours

This ATV tour takes the same path as the UTV Raptor Tour but is for older teens and adults who would like to ride separately rather than together.  This is a very fun, but very bumpy and dusty ride through the Valley!

The ATVs offer one- or two-hour tours. The paths through Jurassic Valley Hawaii are similar on each tour, but the one-hour tour will stop at only one location (maybe Godzilla’s footprint? It’s up to your guide!) for photos and exploring, while the two hour tour will stop at more. You may find yourself disappointed if you book the one hour tour and have to zip by all the cool places that you would like to stop and discover!

You will ride the ATVs in a single file line behind the guide at a max speed of 12MPH. This is perfect for those who are beginner riders or who are happy to just soak up the beauty of the mountains and valley around them, but might be a bit slow for thrill seekers!

*Pro-Tip* This tour takes you to the same movie locations as the Movie Sites Tour.

How to Book Tickets at Kualoa Ranch

Book your activities for early in the day as it gets much hotter and busier throughout the day as the tour buses start arriving.

Kualoa Ranch prides themselves on their low guide to guest ratio ensuring that you are well cared for during your adventures. We found the staff to all be very friendly and helpful before and after booking our activities.

If you plan to purchase several activities around Oahu, you might find that the Go Oahu card is the best bang for your buck.

Note, that the Go Oahu card does offer several Kualoa Ranch activities on the pass, however, you can only do one per day. Once you receive your card, call Kualoa Ranch directly to reserve your time slots with your Go Oahu card number. The Go Oahu card does not ensure availability for the activity if you forget to make a reservation.

Our family did choose to purchase the Go Oahu card, but as we had a rental car and did not need tours for every day of our trip, we chose the Build Your Own option , which was perfect for us and saved us 20% . This gave us the flexibility to save money on a few excursions, but also to take our rental car around the island and explore on our own for most of our vacation on Oahu.

Of all of the beauty and adventure that we have experienced on this island over multiple trips, our times at at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu are among our favorites!

Jurassic Park Hawaii: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Kualoa Ranch

What do Jurassic Park, Lost, and 50 First Dates all have in common? They were all filmed at Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii! If you’re planning to visit Oahu , I highly recommend spending some time at Kualoa Ranch. I went during my one week trip in Oahu, and it was easily one of the best things we did.

About Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000 acre Private Nature Reserve. The reserve got its start in 1850, when King Kamehameha III sold 622 acres to Dr. Gerritt P. Judd which included Mokoli’i, the small island known as “Chinaman’s Hat.” Later, Judd’s son purchased more land in the from Queen Kalama’s land holdings to increase the area to the 4,000 acres it is today.

Although it’s known as Jurassic Park Hawaii, there have been tons of other films and shows filmed on the property. Kong Skull Island, Jumanji, Pearl Harbor, and Godzilla are just some of them. Kualola also serves as a venue for private events and weddings.

The reserve aims to protect the lands from development by offering tour and activities that are sustainable and compatible with the environment. Continue reading to see what tours they offer.

How to Get to Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki. Kualoa suggests getting to the ranch 45 minutes prior to your tour, and I believe that’s to accommodate for traffic and road construction. If your tour is 11:45 AM attempt to get to the ranch by 11:00 AM and you’ll probably actually get there at 11:15 AM. If you leave at 11:00 AM to get there by 11:45 AM, there’s a good chance you’ll miss your tour.

Tour Transfer

Kualoa also offers transfers from Waikiki to their property for certain tours. The tours eligible for transfers are Jurassic Adventure Tour, Ocean Voyage Tour, UTV Raptor Tour, Jungle Expedition Tour, Hollywood Movie Sites & Ranch Tour, Jurassic Valley Zipline, E-Bike Tours, Horseback Tour, Best of Kualoa Experience Package, and the Half Day Package.

Tour transfers cost $30 per person + tax. As there is no door-to-door service, you’ll want to find the nearest pick up location to your accommodation. Pick up locations are, Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, and The Modern Honolulu.

Tips for Visiting Kualoa Ranch – Jurassic Park Hawaii

Definitely plan on booking in advance! I actually had to rearrange our itinerary to fit in our visit. The tours we took stared filling up about 3 weeks in advance. Also, I overheard one of the employees talking to a couple interested in taking a tour, and she said they were completely sold out for the day and that they only had two available for the next day.

On another note, give your self plenty of time to get to get to your tour. Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki, but there’s often traffic, construction, and there was actually a one-way section that took us about 10 minutes to get through.

How much does it cost to visit Kualoa Ranch?

Tours range from $51.95 USD – $174.95 USD + tax for adults, and $36.95 USD – $99.95 USD + tax for children.

Can you visit Kualoa Ranch without a tour?

Unfortunately, no. The property is massive and there’s tons of tours happening at all times. It wouldn’t be very safe to wander around given the terrain. Also, all tours on the ranch are guided.

What is Kualoa Ranch known for?

Kualoa Ranch is known for being the real life Jurassic Park. On the property, there’s signs detailing filming locations for different movies and TV shows. I saw some for Jurassic World, Lost, and Kong Skull Island.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Brief History of Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch was founded by Dr. Gerritt P. Judd back in 1850. He came to Hawaii from the East Coast to help treat Native Hawaiians who were battling diseases and new illnesses.

After seeing how Waikiki and Honolulu were quickly developing, he decided to purchase the 4,000-acre Kualoa Ranch property for $10,000 in order to preserve the sacred land.

Image of a red ranch with a bunch of concrete stairs in front and green mountains in the background.

Today, eight generations later, the land is still owned and managed by Dr. Judd’s descendants. They offer tours, event rentals, and commercial activities in order to keep the land at Kualoa undeveloped and pristine for future generations.

Eating at Pat’s Cafe: a Kualoa Ranch Restaurant

One of the cool things about Kualoa Ranch being an actual working cattle ranch and farm is that they have some of the freshest food items. I highly recommend stopping at Pat’s Cafe for a meal.

Image of tropical chicken with rice and macaroni salad at the Kualoa Ranch restaurant.

They have a great menu selection of classic American dishes plus some with islands twists. You’ll order your food at the counter and then pick it up and find a table.

They also have lots of grab and go snacks and beverages, so it’s a great place to stop after you’ve checked in for your tour and are waiting around.

Kualoa Ranch Gift Shop

Our family’s motto is we’ve never met a gift shop we didn’t like. Well, it’s really the case with this one!

Image of a rack of Aloha shirts with baby clothes in the background.

They have a TON of cool items if you’re Jurassic Park fans or love the other movies filmed here. There’s quite the selection of merchandise.

I’d recommend placing an order for your food first and then head into the gifts shop (it’s in the same building) to go shopping.

Other Things to do Near Kualoa Ranch

One of the top questions I see families ask is about what else there is to do near Kualoa Ranch. Maybe you have a morning tour and want to know how to spend the rest of your day if you stay on that side of the island.

Here are a few easy suggetions:

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

The botanical gardens in Hawaii are pretty impressive and one of the most famous gardens on Oahu is the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden.

Tips for Hawaii on a Budget featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: HO'OMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDEN is a popular photo spot on Oahu

It’s only a few minutes away from Kualoa Ranch and it’s one of the top places to take Instagram photos on Oahu . You’ve probably seen their iconic entrance that features a road in the midst of a gorgeous garden.

But, they also have events throughout the year. And it’s just a pretty place to walk around.

Byodo-in Temple

Another thing to do in Kaneohe is check out the Byodo-In Temple . It’s also a nice photo spot and you really will feel like you’re touring Japan.

The Byodo-In Temple is a popular Oahu photography spot.

It doesn’t take very long to explore this area, so it makes a quick stop either before or after a tour at Kualoa Ranch.

Kualoa Beach Park

Finally, there’s always the BEACH!

Kualoa Beach Park is pretty awesome because it has a huge parking lot and a long stretch of beach. That means it’s really easy to visit.

Plus, it’s right across the street from a large grassy field. That’s a great spot for kids to burn off the rest of their energy before heading back into the car to drive back to your hotel.

Kualoa Ranch Tips for Families

I know a lot of families like to be spontaneous in Hawaii or wait to book activities until they get there. However, the most popular Kualoa Ranch tours often sell out months in advance.

Image of a boy wearing a Jurassic Park shirt in front of a wooden sign that says Kualoa Ranch.

So, if you know that you want to do a specific tour or have date restrictions, it’s best to book early!

Bring Extra Clothes

Depending on the tour you do, you might end up getting really dusty or at least sweaty. And some of the tours even require long pants and closed-toe shoes. That means you might be really hot by the end of the tour.

So, it’s nice if you can change into fresh clothing. And you might even want to bring baby wipes to wipe away sweat or dirt and feel a bit more refreshed.

Take Lots of Photos

There are so many epic views and cool movie sites to see that you’ll want a good camera with you (that can totally be a cell phone). You might also want to bring a gimbal or a GoPro if you want to capture video while doing the activity.

Family Matching Shirts

If you want to be “extra” you can really get into the spirit with matching Jurassic Park shirts for your whole family. I found our set on Etsy and they had a LOT of fun options!

Image of a family wearing matching Jurassic Park shirts.

You could also look on Amazon, Kohl’s, or Target to see what they have. We got a ton of compliments on our shirts and it made the kids feel special.

Jurassic Park Hawaii: A Complete Guide To Kualoa Ranch

Jurassic Park Hawaii: A Complete Guide To Kualoa Ranch

We know of the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” as among the top-grossing films in Hollywood of all time. Aside from the savage dinosaur clones, these movies are known for the breathtaking film locations one would wish to visit. Green mountains, mossy forests, crystal clear lakes, and sparkling waterfalls ー they were just among the things that gave color to these epic Hollywood movies.

If you are thinking that these SciFi series are made in just another artificial film set that helps movies come to life, you’re thinking wrong. Jurassic Park and Jurassic World were filmed in a real environment which you can visit. You ask where? Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu is the place to be. The real-life Jurassic Park Hawaii!

All About Kualoa Ranch

An islet in Kualoa Ranch called the chinaman's hat.

Kualoa Ranch is a private nature reserve and a popular tourist attraction on the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. The property is divided into two major areas, the northern and the southern area.

The northern half includes the Kaʻaʻawa Valley a.k.a. “Jurassic Valley”, which includes many of the favorite movie locations. Aside from the Jurassic Park series, the site has been used for over 50 Hollywood blockbuster movies such as Jumanji, Kong Skull Island, Windtalkers, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Tears of the Sun, and 50 First Dates to name a few.

A train track next to the mountain in Kualoa Ranch

While the southern half of Kualoa Ranch is known for the tranquility and relaxation it gives to the visitors. The area includes Hakipuʻu Valley rainforest, the Secret Island Hokule’ a beach, and the 800-year old Hawaiian fishpond Moli’i.

More than the cinematic appeal of Kualoa, it has a rich historical background that predates its fame in Hollywood. King Kamehameha III formerly owned the majority of the area until he sold 622 acres of ranch land to an American doctor named Gerrit Judd in 1850. Ten years later, Dr. Judd purchased an additional 2200 acres of land which made him own more than half of Kualoa. In 1880, continuing the legacy of his father, Dr. Judd’s son Charles bought another 1188 acres.

During World War II, Kualoa also played an important role when the U.S. military occupied the land and became its coastal artillery. In 1955, it debuted in the Henry Fonda film “Mister Roberts.” Nowadays, Kualoa Ranch is owned by eighth-generation descendants of Dr. Judd and is famous for the outdoor recreation it offers.

Jurassic Park Hawaii Adventures

There is a handful of adventures you can try at the Jurassic Park Hawaii. Kuala Ranch provides various tour packages that will allow you to experience the things you only see in the movies. The good news is, there are no man-eating dinosaurs here!

You can also trace Godzilla’s giant footprints or see the giant remains on Kong Skull Island. Romantics will also appreciate a walk around the location of the Hukilau Cafe from 50 First Dates.

Other famous attractions you can visit during the tour are the house structure from Mighty Joe Young, the Windtalkers battleground, and the road site from You Me & Dupree.

Similar to the vintage school bus tour, this adventure will guide you to the filming locations of your favorite Hollywood movies. What makes the adventure different is the extra thrill of going uphill while pedaling and keeping your balance.

Four people riding ATVs with Godzilla’s giant footprints at Kualoa Ranch as backdrop

Prepare for a rough jungle expedition while aboard an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV). Throughout the adventure, you will be taken to the most scenic spots of Kualoa that were deeply tucked in the woods. Although the experience will rather be more bumpy than serene, you’ll have the chance to explore remote areas that are rarely visited by others.

The ATV tour lasts either in an hour or two. They both take the same path, but if you are someone who loves taking pictures, you can take the 2-hour tour instead. The 1-hour tour has limited stops, while the longer tour will allow you to explore more filming sites.

To join the tour, you must be 16 or older who is willing to get wet and dig dirt. The adventure comes rain or shines you know!

ATV Expedition Rates: 1-Hour Tour: $87.95

2-Hour Tour: $130.90

4. Zipline Sightseeing

A guy riding a zipline

If you wonder how the Jurassic Park Hawaii looks from above, riding a zipline will help you visualize how mesmerizing it could be. The Kualoa Ranch zipline remains among the favorite adventure in this part of Oahu, highlighting everything you want to see in the nature reserve.

Kualoa Ranch has seven zipline sections as well as a couple of hanging bridges and mini-hiking trails. Once the tour starts, there’s no stopping to it and you’d have to keep going until the last line. But with the scenic spots to see from above, pretty sure not even acrophobia will spoil your excitement.

From the above, you will be rewarded with the most familiar sites you see in different movies like the Ka’a’awa Valley. During the tour, you will also learn about Hawaiian traditions through short and informative presentations. Your zipline experience will last in 2 hours. Quite long for a zipline experience, but don’t worry, they won’t leave you hanging.

Zipline Adventure Rate: 2-Hour Tour – $160.97

5. Horseback Ride Tour

Four brown horses next to a mountain range in Kualoa Ranch.

Enough of those rough adventures and time to have a more subtle one, the horseback ride tour. In an hour or so, you will be guided to the spectacular scenery of Oahu’s hidden valleys while, of course, riding a horse.

While enjoying the breeze and mist of the tropical weather, you’d have the chance to explore the Mokoli’i islet which became famous for its cameo in the CBS hit TV series “Hawaii Five-0″. Afterward, you also wouldn’t want to miss a short jaunt in the 800-year old Hawaiian fishpond.

Horseback Ride Rates: 1-Hour Tour: $87.95

2-Hour Tour: $134.95

6. Kayak Adventure Tour

A woman riding on a kayak in an open water.

Touring Oahu in its waters is a different kind of adventure you can have in Kualoa Ranch. While gently paddling along Kaneohe Bay, you’ll get to see Mokoli’i Island up-close, set foot in the Secret Island, and head out to the mini sand bar. From afar, you’d see the Kanehoalani mountains on a completely different side with its moss-green peak piercing the sky.

You are free to join the kayak tour as long as you know how to swim! For the safety gears like life jackets and waterproof dry-bag, Kualoa Ranch got them all covered.

Kayak Tour Rate: 2-Hour Tour: $109.95 Adult | $89.95 Child

7. Jurassic Jungle Expedition Tour

Five boys pose inside a bus with a sign on the side that says "Kualoa Ranch Tours".

The Jurassic Jungle Expedition Tour is a perfect family adventure for those who are looking for a more chill experience. Although considered as less extreme adventure, you can still expect a bumpy ride. Aboard a classic jeep, you will be taken deep into the Hakipu`u Jurassic rainforest where most of Jumanji scenes were filmed.

As you tour the Jurassic Park Valley, you’d not only be entertained by the great scenery that will come your way. You will also learn more about the valley and the various plants growing there. Now if this kind of stuff gets you bored, guides often throw a bit of humor to keep you hype.

What’s good with this tour is it will allow you to reach secluded spots that are not covered in other tour packages.

Jungle Jeep Tour Rate: $47.95 Adult | $36.95 Child

8. Secret Island Beach Adventure

Seashore with a rock wall and tress behind.

It is no secret that Secret Island Beach has lots of fun adventures to offer. Although it is one of the most secluded beaches in Hawaii, it remains one of the favorites. It is an ideal place for people who are looking for peace of mind and extreme recreation, altogether.

There’s a bunch of water sports you can try here while enjoying the stunning views of Kaneohe Bay and the overlooking Mokoli’i island. You can enjoy a beach day of canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and more.

You have half of the day to explore everything that Secret Island Beach has to offer. But if it’s still not enough to achieve your suntan skin, you can opt for a full-day exploration with a relatively higher price.

Secret Island Beach Rates: Half-Day Tour: $47.95 Adult | $36.95 Child

Full-Day Tour: $89.95 Adult | $69.95 Child

9. Ocean Voyage Cruise

A catamaran docked in open sea in front of an islet.

Ocean Voyage Cruise is a family favorite adventure in Kualoa Ranch. Aboard a catamaran, you will be taken to Oahu’s beautiful windward side through the Kaneohe Bay. While enjoying the blue waters, you can have a different perspective of the stunning views of mountains from afar. From the waters, you’ll see Ko’olau mountains and the sacred Kanehoalani mountain peak.

Right after the ride, you’d have to jump off on a canoe and paddle around the sacred fish pond and see the Mokoli’i Island up-close. If you’re lucky enough, you can also have a chance to see turtles feeding right under the crystal clear waters of Kaneohe.

Ocean Voyage Cruise Rate: $47.95 Adult | $36.95 Child

10. Kualoa Food Tour

A display of assorted fruits like pineapple, orange, mango and coconut.

Kualoa Ranch also provides you with a real taste of Jurassic Park Hawaii. Hop aboard a trolley bus and you will be taken to the farmlands that once fed the ancient Kualoa. The tour starts from the visitor center at Kualoa ranch and slowly takes guests deep into tropical fruit and flower gardens as well as ancient fishpond of Moli’i. You’ll also be taken into a plantation of coffee, sugar cane, and cacao.

The tour ends in a food tasting site where you can have a try of different tropical fruits such as pineapple, starfruit, papaya, taro, and breadfruit.

Best Time To Visit Kualoa Ranch

Hawaii is a tropical state which means the weather generally warm the entire year. There’s only two weather seasons here, summer and winter. Summer, which falls in May to October, is the best time to visit Kualoa Ranch as the weather is dry and it rarely rains. The average temperature during the season is 29.4° C. If that’s too much for you, winter would be more bearable but don’t expect snow.

Winter in Hawaii is a bit different from the rest of the world. In fact, you would hardly see any snow unless you are 10,000 feet above sea level. Instead of snow, Hawaii gets a lot of rain during the season. If you like a watery adventure then you should visit Kualoa Ranch in winter!

If you are a real Hollywood movie fan, you shouldn’t miss a visit to one of the biz’s favorite backdrops and have an experience as if you’re on the big screen. You should plan your visit carefully and book your tickets beforehand as the tour packages sell out real quick. Kualoa Ranch sells limited tickets to provide you a more personal experience. It would often take a month to get available slots, but the wait will be worth it once you get there.

After your Jurassic Park Hawaii adventure, head on to Utah state and national parks for a different nature experience!

Kualoa Ranch – Visiting Jurassic Park Hawaii

Jurassic Park sign and tree at Kualoa Ranch Hawaii

My ultimate favorite movie is Jurassic Park. I watched it as a kid, 10 years old and was in awe. My Dad took the heat for taking me to such a disturbing movie for kids (although I loved it). So you can only imagine my child-like excitement when I found out it was possible to visit the filming location of the movie. I too could walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs, and live out my JP dreams. Jurassic Park Hawaii! Say aloha to Kualoa Ranch on Oahu.

I actually had no idea that this place existed until my friends visited on their trip to Oahu earlier in the year. When I saw their photo next to the Jurassic Park sign I begged them to tell me more since I’d just booked my trip to Hawaii.

After relentless badgering I convinced my boyfriend Jeff that this would be a great place to visit. And I’m definitely glad I did.

Where is Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch is on Oahu, the most populated island. If like me you managed to get a cheap flight to Hawaii then you’ll perhaps fly into Honolulu . The ranch is on the same island. It’s about an hour’s drive from Honolulu, or Waikiki where we were staying. They do offer transfers for an additional cost, however we decided to take the day to drive around the island a bit in our own rental car.

If it weren’t for a rental car, I don’t think we’d have enjoyed Oahu as much as we did. We managed to get a cheap car rental at our hotel for our stay and it was a life saver. We booked our tour for mid afternoon so that we wouldn’t be rushed to get there. Our day started with a drive up the middle of Oahu to the North Shore, exploring the beautiful beaches of Hawaii, before driving along the coast to Kualoa Ranch.

What tours are available at Kualoa Ranch?

horse trekking through Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii

The ranch offers a number of different tours throughout the day. There are options to combine multiple tours with a lunch at the ranch to spend more time there. These are some of the most popular tours – click on each one to book!

UTV Self-Drive Tour

Ever wanted to ride one of those really cool UTVs? The Utility Task Vehicle is kind of like an ATV but can fit more people in. So if you’re traveling with your partner or family this is a great way to explore Kualoa Ranch. You’ll get to drive yourself around the ranch, checking out all the major spots. Don’t worry about getting lost, you’ll be following a tour guide so you get the tour experience with a little more independence.

Horseback Riding Tour

Saddle up and experience Kualoa Ranch in a completely unique way – by taking a slower paced horse walking tour. Spend a couple of hours riding through the lush green valley with epic views everywhere you turn. You’ll have experts with you the whole time who will also be your guides to some of the best sites around Kualoa.

Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

Any movie fan needs to take this tour. You’ll visit the sites from many a popular Hollywood movie – Jurassic Park, King Kong and Jumanji to name a few. Read below for more info about this amazing family-friendly tour.

Jurassic Adventure Tour

If like me you’re a major Jurassic Park fan then this is the tour for you. The tour focuses on the movie franchise filming sites around Kualoa Ranch. Unlike the more enclosed and larger Hollywood Movie Sites tour bus, this smaller, open air vehicle gives you a much better perspective. This might be the coolest tour in 65 million years!

Jungle Expedition Tour

Not as into the movies? More just interested in the natural environment Kualoa Ranch has to offer? The Jungle Expedition Tour is the perfect way to go deep into nature and see some of the best wilderness on Oahu. This smaller off-road vehicle will make you feel like you’re on a safari and gets to some of the most remote parts of the ranch.

ITOP TIP: book your tour early to avoid sold out options. I cannot stress this enough as tours will sell out. The tour we opted for was the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour . Sure it wasn’t as intimate a tour as the jeep tour, or as thrilling as the UTV tour, but I am happy with what we chose.

The tour is 90 minutes long and has a big emphasis on the movies that were filmed there. As a bit of a movie geek this is exactly what I wanted. I was worried that some of the other tours may not focus on this as much (another good reason to perhaps buy a tour package including more than one tour for the day).

What you need to know about the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

Jurassic Park poster and movie stills from underground bunker in Kualoa Ranch

The main things you should know about this tour that may not be true of some of the others:

  • Great for those on a vacation budget
  • Family friendly tour
  • Easygoing and interactive
  • Perfect for movie fans

Hawaii is not the cheapest place to visit so this tour in particular is great if you are on a budget. The Hollywood Movie Sites tour is around $50 USD per person with an optional $15 per person roundtrip transfer from Waikiki.

The 90 minute tour takes place on what appears to be a re-purposed school bus. Your bus driver is your tour guide, and they are incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. There were plenty of kids on the tour I did, but it was just as fun for the adults who remember the movies they filmed there.

our bus for the Kualoa Ranch tour

There are stops throughout the tour to get out and take pictures, and the buses have no actual glass in the windows so you don’t have any obstructions for your perfect shot. The bus takes a leisurely drive through the ranch around the various movies sites.

Speaking of movie sites, this is the tour you want if you love your movies. It’s not just Jurassic Park, but Godzilla, King Kong, 50 First Dates and TV shows like Lost were all filmed here. Love movies? Then this Disneyland & Universal post is for you .

Taking the Kualoa Ranch Movie Sites Tour

We were told to arrive about 30 minutes before our scheduled tour time. The reason was to check in and get your tickets. We had our tickets within minutes of showing up of our 3pm tour so we ended up with some time to kill. There’s a fully stocked gift shop and a cafe/restaurant on site so getting there early probably doesn’t hurt. There is a decent amount of roadwork around Oahu so make sure to plan your time well.

incredible views at very stormy looking Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii

Because of how quick it was to get our tickets and not really seeing anyone else, I wondered how we were going to fill this big school bus. But before you could blink a huge line formed ready to get on the tour. Not sure where everyone came from, but it was full.

Now I mentioned before the whole no windows thing. Sounds great in theory except Hawaii is also pretty tropical and not averse to the odd heavy shower of rain so the window seat can get a little wet if like for us it’s a cloudy day. TOP TIP: have something to cover your camera just in case.

The history of Kualoa Ranch

All seated on the bus, our tour guide who insisted we call him Uncle Leonard drove us towards the ranch, away from the visitor center. Uncle Leonard was delightful and informative with just the right amount of Dad jokes mixed into his tour. It kind of felt like a family road trip. He started by telling us how the Ranch became what it is today.

The 4000 acre ranch was originally a sacred place to the Hawaiian people. An American doctor, Dr. Gerritt P. Judd, purchased a piece of the land in 1850 from the King at the time. He and his family purchased more of the land since then and now the Ranch is still owned and managed by the family.

Kualoa Ranch, Oahu Hawaii

The condition the King set when selling the land was that it would not be sold or developed and as such the land is sustainably used even now. When a production company films on Kualoa Ranch, they always break down the set and take away whatever they brought in. The only exceptions are the few pieces the family choose to keep there as part of the tours which are not detrimental to the environment.

WWII bunker on-site

A more modern piece of history is that during the Second World War, Kualoa Ranch became a military airfield occupied by the U.S. military. Our first stop on the tour was the West-facing bunker which is now used to store a ton of movie memorabilia. Although the entrance to the bunker was filled with vintage inspired wartime recruitment and informational posters.

World War 2 posters in the underground bunker at Kualoa Ranch

The bunker is the perfect place to showcase some of the movie history of the ranch including posters and stills from its more famous flicks. This was our first taste of movie history as we were led deep into the bunker passing posters for Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbor and Jumanji.

Some of the saved movie props, which apparently keep the Styrofoam business booming, are on display also. The bones from Kong: Skull Island. The polar bear model from Lost (the bunker was used in the TV show for those who remember it, as the Dharma Initiative station).

Underground bunker at Kualoa Ranch

Between the original Jurassic Park, and the two new Jurassic World movies, dinosaurs were represented early on in our tour. Making velociraptor friends is easy to do, and you can check out one of the vehicles from the new Jurassic World movie (Chris Pratt not included).

Jurassic World truck, Kualoa Ranch

Driving into the ranch

As the sky turned stormy looking and the ocean waves below crashed into the rocks, it was pretty easy to feel like we were at the beginning of a Hollywood movie. While some people might be disappointed it wasn’t beautiful blue skies, I was secretly over the moon at how atmospheric it was, given the reason for my wanting to visit in the first place.

We got back into the bus and continued along the outer road, finally driving into the Ranch’s Jurassic Valley (I know!!!). The background of the mountains and the stormy skies made it feel like every monster movie that was ever made at this ranch was coming to life. It was so cool!

banana trees in Hawaii

We drove past the plantation areas of the ranch where they grow bananas and other tropical fruits. As we arrived in the valley area we saw one of the horse trek tours riding through.

Then we started to see things that didn’t quite look like they belonged in the ranch. The movie props left behind. An Easter Island statue from the National Geographic Live show. A bunch of straw huts that form a village. The remains of a footprint from Godzilla. Nothing out of the ordinary at all, right?

Remember to take a reusable water bottle with you on your travels, like this one from FastTech

The Jurassic Park sign and tree

Our next stop was the one I had been waiting for. I’m not ashamed to say I wore my Jurassic Park t-shirt especially for this day. Fan girl much?! The Jurassic Park sign was set up next to, in Uncle Leonard’s words, possibly the most famous dead tree in Hawaii. That would be the tree that Dr. Grant and the kids hide behind during the “flocking” of the Gallimimus dinosaurs when running from the T-Rex. That’s right, I know all the dinosaur names. Surely you can’t be surprised at this.

Jurassic Park sign at Kualoa Ranch

Our tour guide was happy to take pictures of us together, and I took a dozen more. We also took the time to take pictures of the valley itself all around us. We didn’t get rushed back onto the bus, and Uncle Leonard made sure everyone got their photos. It’s weird to think that a movie sign could be the highlight of the day but if you’re a movie fan like me, I think you’ll understand.

Kualoa Ranch movie sites and views

The rest of the tour was just as fun and interesting. We saw the golf course Hurley built in Lost. The road where Adam Sandler took out a penguin in 50 First Dates. The graveyard of Kong’s predecessors including giant ape skull. Not something you see every day.

remains of the movie filming site for Kong: Skull Island in Hawaii

Taking a slow drive back through the ranch we saw some of the cattle and livestock that are housed there. We were constantly in awe of the beautiful views in the valley and around the ranch. The place was so unbelievably green, and we were surrounded by impressively imposing mountains whose peaks were lost in the clouds.

Captivating Kualoa Ranch

views of Oahu

Kualoa Ranch is more than just about movies. But if you like your Hollywood blockbusters, then it’s a great place to visit. It’s also the ideal place to see a piece of real Hawaii, to get out of Waikiki/ Honolulu and really see Oahu. I would definitely go again, and next time I would take one of the other tours.

Perhaps the ATV tour, or the horseback riding tour. Those tours are a little more intimate, less people and less of a tour feel. Plus they include fun activities. Not that the bus tour wasn’t fun, it was. As an introduction tour, and a tour on a budget it was perfect for what we wanted on our trip. I’m also really glad I got to see where my favorite movie was made.

Such a fun place! I always love Hawaii and am always looking for new things to do when we return here!

OMG, this looks sooooo fun! I would love to visit (although I’d have the Jurassic Park music in my head for the entire visit…I mean, I have it now just reading your post!)

It’s a shame Chris Pratt isn’t included 😉 but I’d still be up for this!

OMG! This looks EPIC! Jurassic Park was one of my fave movies growing up and I would love to do this and see the island this way!

Oh my goodness. This looks amazing! I also love visiting the sites of shows or movies that you love. There’s just something about it.

I had nooo idea that there is a Jurassic Park open to the public in the world!! I loved your experience and I think it’s just added on my bucket list, thanks for the tips (especially that we have to book early to avoid disappointment!)

It’s easy to see why the area is used as a world unlike any other. It looks positively massive. Even if you’re not a diehard Jurassic Park fan, I can’t imagine anyone being bored by the tour. I would love to see this in person.

Great post! I’ve never done this tour, but I would love to!

Wow I definitely never knew this place existed! You also hammered in just how amazingly beautiful Hawaii is… I’ve usually thought it too expensive but it’s so uniquely lush it seems worth it!

I was here a few years ago. It’s such a beautiful place and zip lining was a lot of fun!

What a dream come true! I have to visit!!! When I was in Maui we visited the area that you see in the opening scene of the movie. I can’t imagine what it is like to be on the actual set!

wow I had no idea this place existed!! I love Jurassic Park so definitely adding this to my bucket list, ATV tour sounds awesome but I love the repurposed tour bus! Thanks for sharing this with me!

Woow this place looks incredible, loved your photos! How cool to be able to visit the Jurassic Park filming location! Just added this one to my ever-growing bucket list 🙂

That’s so cool! My boyfriend would absolutely love to visit there! It also looks really familiar to me from watching Lost; I’m guessing it’s the same location! 🙂

Oh yeah, it’s in Lost, Jumanji, Godzilla, King Kong, 50 First Dates. A ton of big movies and shows.

Totally wish I’d come here when I was in Hawaii!!! Especially as I’m a huge Lost fan too, haha. Hurley’s golf course is there! (I did go to a bunch of other Lost locations though!) This looks like such a fun tour.

I didn’t have the opportunity to visit this place during my last trip to Oahu. Looks super cool and the scenery is beautiful. Next time, I am renting a car and driving all around the island.

Never heard of this place, so lush. Thanks for sharing it.

This is so cool I had no idea that this park even existed! I’ve never been to Hawaii but it is high on my list of places to visit. Pinning this post so I remember to go to Jurassic Park.

Wow such a cool place with lots of fun things to do! Great read!

It all sounds like so much fun! I have visited Maui and Kauai but not Oahu yet! I also love Jurassic park!

This movie terrified me as a child! I had no idea you could visit an actual Jurassic Park though! I’ve not yet made it to Hawaii but this would definitely be fun to check out. Thanks for showing me someplace new!

Wow, this is amazing! I didn’t even know this is a thing, adding to the list!

This looks absolutely amazing! It reminds me of my visit to Hobbiton in New Zealand. So cool to be able to visit filming locations. It really makes movies come to life! Plus now whenever I watch Lord of the Rings, I get all sentimental about my travels!

These pictures make me feel like a visit there would be like being on set on one of the best movies ever. Great article. When I go to Hawaii, I definitely want to check this out.

Oh my god, this is so cool! I aboslutely love Jurassic Park and would love to visit the park. Great post!

Wow! What a fun looking place! My boys would LOVE to visit this park. I am so glad that you shared it. We’re planning a trip to Hawaii for their 5th birthday, I’m going to have to add this to our list.

This looks amazing! What a fun tour to do! I always love visiting places that I’ve seen in movies 🙂

First off, I love how the tour takes place in a school bus – that is pretty unique. I have to admit I haven’t seen all of the Jurassic Park movies yet. But emphasis on yet! I do plan to watch them all and will have to keep these tours in mind for my trip to Hawaii. Hawaii is at the top of the travel list for my boyfriend, so we should be making a trip there soon!

We visited the public park next door and drove by. The photos from the main road outside Jurassic park we have are amazing. We did not enter but the mountains are spectacular. If in Oahu u must at least drive by.

The Jurassic Valley Zipline is perfect for those looking for an activity to get their heart racing for adventure! One of the best zipline experiences you will have. Is there any better place to zip through rainforests than this Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii? (Nope).

Ziplines are a personal favorite of mine when it comes to outdoor activities. And what better place to experience this than Jurassic Park Oahu. The valleys and rainforests go on for miles and are unimaginable. To see the true beauty of nature like this – no picture can be the same as flying above it in real life.

There are no age restrictions for the zipline, but check body size restrictions on the Kualoa Ranch Tours website. Nothing special is required to bring. Wear appropriate clothing and closed shoes. (Don’t wear your Daisy Dukes on this one). I would personally recommend taking photos when you are in a stable position. It’s up to you if you want to risk getting out your phone mid-air!

If you feel a little nervous about ziplining, don’t worry, the guides are there to reassure you and make everyone feel very comfortable. It’s normal to get sweaty palms when 200 feet in the air!

Saying this, the experience is worth it. Even if you feel anxious, remember to tell yourself how rewarding it will be to fly over with this Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii!

Duration: Tours available for 1 or 2 hours.  Includes: Ride around Kualoa Ranch on an eco-friendly mountain bike with your saddle bag storage pack and safety helmet. Want to get your daily dose of exercise on your adventure with this Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii? Book your own eco-friendly mountain bike tour at Kualoa Ranch.

Opt for this eco-friendly bike tour in Hawaii which will allow you to explore the jungle, mountains, valleys, and movie sets. The Electric Mountain Bike Tour is a relatively new Tour Kualoa Ranch has added and offers a new type of adventure!

Suitable for everyone, the bikes have a quiet engine where you can gently pedal (not as much as a regular bike). Children will most likely need to put in a little more effort to power the bikes.

As you will spend the whole tour on the bike, bring as little as possible with you as you’re not allowed to take bags for the trip. I recommend only water, a camera, and other necessary personal belongings.

You must know how to ride a bike, meet the height and weight restrictions, and be ten years of age.

The highlight of the mountain bike tour is getting the freedom to go at your own pace and stopping to take photos of the beautiful scenery in the valleys and mountains.

Be prepared for a few steep hills throughout the ride! Not as strenuous as a regular bike, but some effort is required.

We can see why it’s been named one of the ’50 Places of a Lifetime by National Geographic Traveler; the Allerton Garden Tour will leave you truly amazed.

It’s slightly cheaper but just as impressive as the tours offered at Kualoa Ranch; this one is unique from the rest as it’s in a completely different location and combines an exhibit that is part garden, part art.

The guides will take you to the ‘garden’ rooms filled with the most exotic plants, sculptures, and water features. The colors and intricate designs are mesmerizing. You will hear all about the history behind the garden rooms, which makes the tour very enjoyable.

Head on to the movie locations for Allerton Gardens. The most iconic set is where the roots of Moreton Bay fig trees are located – which you will see in films such as Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean. An experience you won’t forget.

Travel Guide to Hawaii - On the Beach

Explore the beautiful paradise of Hawaii while experiencing a Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii and find out more about these beautiful islands with our Travel Guide to Hawaii for 2024

We can help you discover the stunning beaches, delve into the Hawaiian Jurassic parks, check out the best things to do in Maui, and head to a Kualoa ranch tour.

After reading “Travel Guide to Hawaii,” you will have everything you need to know to enjoy a vacation or longer-term stay in these magical Hawaiian Islands.

The incredible scenery bursting with color does make you feel like you are on another planet, tucked away from the rest of the world. What more can you ask?

You will be able to explore so much these islands have to offer in Hawaii. So, start packing your bags and book those flights! Here’s why the Hawaiian Islands should be your next trip.

Hawaii – Where is Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands is a cluster of islands in the North Pacific Ocean and the only state outside the mainland of the Continental United States. Ranking as the fourth smallest land area, Hawaii Islands has a population of 1.4 million .

Hawaii is made up of 6 major islands – Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and of course, the island of Hawaii, also known as the ‘Big Island.’ In total, there are 137 islands in the chain! (The majority of these being uninhabited)

The largest island is Hawaii, which is nearly twice as big as its neighbors. It is known for being the most volcanically active – two of the most famous, Kilauea’ and ‘Maunaloa’ are located here.

However, the most visited island is ‘Oahu’ – booming with tourism and receiving around 4.7 million visitors yearly. It has the state capital of Honolulu, taking up two-thirds of Hawaii’s population. Honolulu is the largest city and is considered one of the U.S.’s most modern cities.

‘Lanai’ is a secluded island for those looking for a more private and luxurious vacation. It offers the most beautiful scenery for solo and group travelers, specifically couple travelers.

‘Maui’ is suitably nicknamed ‘Beverly Hills Island’ – another luxury destination! You will not be disappointed if you want to live it big, with resorts, beaches, and nightlife.

‘Kauai’ attracts those searching to spend all their time in nature, nicknamed the ‘Garden Island. This isn’t surprising for us – 97% of the land here has been preserved. So if you want to see the untouched wilderness, look no further.

And last but not least, we have ‘Molokai’ – home to many native Hawaiians and the most authentic of them all. It is truly a wonder not to be missed.

Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii - Map of Hawaii Islands

Hawaii – Airports & Entry

Depending on your destination, flights from the United States mainland typically take around 5 hours to get to Hawaii. Check if any stops will add extra time to your journey.

Most international flights will likely land in Oahu, the central hub island. So if your final destination is, for example, Maui, you will probably have to transfer here.

Like every other flight, the earlier you book, the higher your chance of getting cheap flights! I always use Google Flights or Skyscanner to check the most affordable flights across various dates. The closer you are to Hawaii, the cheaper it will be. Be aware of when you are going – if you are traveling in the high season, prices will also be higher than in the low season.

The most popular airline to look at is Hawaiian Airlines. They go between the Hawaiian Islands and offer reasonable prices. You also have Southwest Airlines, known for its low prices.

You can either get a flight or use the ferry system to travel between the six islands, which are all very accessible.

If you prefer a more scenic ferry ride, check the times. The system has a Molokai Ferry , which departs from Maui, and the Maui-Lanai Expeditions Ferry arrives in Lanai.

Or, if you want to hop on a flight to get to your next island, all can be reached from Honolulu Airport within around 40 minutes.

If you know you will be moving throughout the islands and visiting more than one, I would advise you to give yourself enough time as it could take a big chunk of your day, and you may want to rest after your arrival!

Hawaii – History

Hawaii officially became America’s 50 th state in 1959. It is located 2,397 miles from San Francisco, California, and the capital is Honolulu in Oahu.

It was 400 C.E. when the Polynesians first discovered Hawaii. They traveled to the Big Island in canoes navigating their way by the stars! They lived in their small communities for many years here.

Captain James Cook became the first European in Hawaii who traveled to Kauai in 1778, this discovery cost him his life .

There are also two other neighboring islands, Niihau and Kahoolawe.

Niihau is also known as the ‘Forbidden Island’ – consists of one tiny village; outsiders can only see this island from a helicopter. They cannot step on land to preserve the Hawaiian soil.

Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii - The Forbidden Island 'Niihau

Kahoolawe is the other island with no inhabitants, limited access to outsiders, and no activities or tours. Unfortunately, after the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack , the island remained a bombing target until 1990.

The attack on Pearl Harbor, located on Oahu island, left a mark in history; with more than 2,300 Americans killed, it took many years to recover from this devastation.

Hawaii – People & Culture

Hawaiian and English are the official languages in the state of Hawaii. Hawaiian is marked as the Polynesian language originating from the Austronesian family. Not many speak the language today, and it is unfortunately classified as critically endangered by UNESCO.

English has become the official language in schools, and the Hawaiian language decreased in the 1800s.

The aboriginal Hawaiians were brown-skinned with black hair, typically with very athletic bodies. The men would wear a ‘malo,’ a small piece of cloth covering the lower body, and women would wear a ‘tapa’ to create a skirt, sometimes including leaves with the material.

And don’t forget about the Hawaiian Islands’ flowers! Of course, when we think of Hawaii, we always think about the people dressed in their bright, bold flowers. It is very common for women to wear a single flower or a wreath in their hair – sometimes just consisting of leaves, and we often see them draped around their necks.

The wreath of flowers can also be gifted as a welcome gesture – known as the ‘Lei.’ It stands for friendship and should only be removed in private.

Travel Guide to Hawaii - The 'Lei'

The people are considered very strong, with various sports dominating the islands over the years, such as swimming, wrestling, boxing, spear throwing, and surfing. Surfing will always dominate the sports world in Hawaii; it is very common to be taught surfing at such a young age, considering you live next to these tropical waters!

Hula! The captivating dance highlights the Hawaiian culture throughout the years. It truly is a magical wonder empowered with its dance and music. The music can be slow and tranquil or upbeat and fast, performed with their fascinating chants. It was initially a religious performance in which they would honor a Hawaiian god or goddess as part of a ceremony. With its strong historical roots still growing among Hawaii’s people, it will always be known as part of its culture.

Hawaii – Food

Hawaiian cuisine, where do we start? The vibrant colors, full flavor, and countless dishes you can have here will leave your mouth watering for more. Here are some of the most popular words you may come across in Hawaii.

Lomi Lomi Salmon

This dish is served cold – salmon fillets mixed with tomatoes, onion, and sea salt. The taste will remind you of the sea and leave you feeling refreshed!

Travel Guide to Hawaii - Lomi Lomi Salmon

Chicken Long Rice

The Chinese introduced this one to the Hawaiian culture in the 1900s. A stew-like dish created with clear noodles mixed with chicken, onion, and ginger, served over white rice. This hearty meal brings a mixture of flavors.

For those meat lovers, do not miss this dish! This is big in Hawaiian cuisine, and you will see it a lot here. It is slow-roasted pork known for its incredible smoky flavor (it has the appearance of pulled pork). You can pair this with anything you like, but rice can be very common.

Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii - Kalua Pig

This one has always been a traditional meal for the Hawaiians. It is made by mashing Kalo, which creates a thick grey-like paste. You can eat it on its own or add some Kalua Pig or salmon to add flavor!

Travel Guide to Hawaii - Poi

This one comes wrapped in taro leaves (the leaves are inedible, so be sure to unwrap them before eating!). Inside you will find the meat, which can be pork, chicken, or fish. This is cooked for many hours in a hot rock oven which makes the juices from the meat incredible. It will simply melt in your mouth.

Yes, this dish does sound Japanese – probably because it consists of raw fish! However, unlike the Japanese, who typically slice their fish in thin pieces, you will find they serve it in cube-size bites here in Hawaii. The commonly used fish is ahi (tuna), served with soy sauce, sea salt, onions, and seaweed.

A sweet Jello-like pudding – a beloved Hawaiian dessert. It is made with sugar and coconut milk, and prepared with pia (Polynesian arrowroot). It is cut into small slices, which can be added to fruit.

Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii - Haupia

Hawaii – Weather

The weather in Hawaii is more or less consistent all year round. They only have two seasons – Summer, from May to October, and Winter, from November to April.

The temperature during the day stays around the high 60s (Fahrenheit) 20s (Celsius), for example, 84 (F) 29 (C) during Summer. Then in the Winter, this only drops a few degrees to around 77 (F) 25 (C). So you won’t need too many layers in the Winter!

Of course, the night will be slightly cooler; temperatures will drop to 59 (F) and 15 (C).

As for the rainfall, the wettest months are during Winter, usually November to March. Luckily, most rain happens in the mountains on the northeastern side of the islands due to the high-pressure zones.

This creates a magnificent tropical environment – whenever we think of Hawaii, we always envision mountain tops with the greenest scenery, right? The microclimate adds to these rich, tropical environments.

If you’re planning on surfing during your trip, the water temperatures here are pretty comfortable! They can be anywhere in the high 70s (F) or mid-20s (C). The waves will vary depending on which beach you will go to and the day.

I always check Magic Seaweed – an excellent app for surfing conditions. You can check local beaches, which tell you all the necessary information.

Travel Guide to Hawaii - Hawaii Island

Hawaii – Tourism

The high season in Hawaii is between March and September, with the most elevated temperatures.

Visitor numbers drop from October to November, with slightly more relaxed and wetter Hawaiian Islands weather.

Hawaii is generally a good holiday destination all year round because of its comfortable climate and the suitable range of activities available.

Be aware that prices are always higher during peak season, so the winter would be better if you don’t mind visiting in the cooler months and are on a strict budget.

As Hawaii is a state of the USA and is geographically close, most visitors are from the American mainland states. More so from the west than the east because of cost and distance.

Canada has the second-highest visitation numbers to Hawaii.

Hawaii – Getting Around (public & other transport)

The main types of transportation on the Hawaiian Islands include bus, shuttle, taxi, Uber, or rental car.

Speedishuttle is a company that offers private and shared shuttles on the Hawaiian Islands – good when you want to get between the airport and your accommodation. This service is available on Hawaii Island, Oahu, Kauai, and Maui.

The bus in Ho nolulu is a great way to get around Hawaii. A pretty reliable source of transport and, of course, on the cheaper side. Depending on your destination, some buses will frequently arrive every 10 or 30 minutes, but some may be every hour if your location is less central.

A new rail system can also get you out of the airport to Downtown or the city’s west side. The Honolulu Transit provider is HART .

Taxi services will be widely available in the main Hawaiian Islands. Like everywhere else, this will cost you more, but you have a private car, and they will drop you off wherever – so if you can afford it, this is a good option.

Uber or Lyft prices will vary depending on demand and time. It will most likely be cheaper than a taxi.

If you have a partner or are traveling in a group, and know you want to visit slightly more remote areas on the island, then a rental car is the perfect option! It saves money when there are more of you, but it gives you a lot of freedom when you can hop in the car for any trip. Be sure to look around at various companies to get a good deal, and pre-book to arrange this when you arrive at the airport!

Hawaii – Explore Oahu

Jurassic adventure park tour.

Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii - Jurassic Park Tours

You can’t come to Hawaii and not do a Jurassic Park Tour! One of the most famous scenic and exciting adventures in Oahu is a once–in–a–lifetime experience you will not forget.

Suitable for everyone. Nature lovers. Animal lovers. Film lovers! You will get something out of this experience no matter who you are.

The guided tours take you to magical film sites! How cool is that? There can’t be a more iconic place for a movie than Jurassic Park in Hawaii. They are located in Kualoa, Hakipu’u, and Ka’a’awa Valleys.

The Jurassic Park Tour offers unbelievable scenery to gaze at, adventurous treks through the forest, and the enormous cages used in the films.

Don’t let the prices on these tours deter you; it is worth every penny. I would set aside a day for this activity and maybe get up to scratch with the Jurassic Park movies before you do go! You will get even more excited when you realize you’ll see the real thing in Hawaii soon!

Pack plenty of water and sunscreen, and grab that camera! You will be snapping plenty along your adventures here.

Tickets sell out quickly for the Hawaii Jurassic Park Tours, so pre-book with as much time beforehand. I would recommend checking a couple of months before your trip – anything within a month will be tricky to get your hands on because it is so popular.

Kualoa Ranch Tour

Located on the island of Oahu, Kualoa, Hawaii, is a private nature reserve and working cattle ranch. They offer several activities that can keep you entertained for hours – offering several tours.

They include a Jurassic Valley Zipline, ocean voyaging, ATVs and raptors, beaches, food tours, and many more.

Head to the Kualoa Ranch website to find an activity for yourself or the family! (The same website used for Hawaii Jurassic Park Tours) Suitable for any age, you will be able to make this an exciting trip for everyone.

Again, tickets sell very quickly here, so make sure you check in advance with plenty of time.

Kualoa Ranch Tours is one to remember when visiting Hawaii!

Travel Guide to Hawaii - Jurassic Valley Zipline

The famous 300,000-year-old volcanic cone on the Oahu island is one of the most popular activities in Hawaii.

Diamond Head State Monument

Along the Diamond Head Summit Trail hike , you will see the most spectacular views from the rim of a volcano! The walk is moderate but will take 1.5-2 hours, so be prepared for many steps and pack lots of water and snacks for the journey.

The earlier you arrive, the less crowded it will be. Getting there is easier if you have a car; there is a parking lot located here at the start of the hike. Or you can get an Uber if you can’t access a car.

Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii - Diamond Head

The other popular volcano hike here in Hawaii is Mauna Kea . The highest peak in Hawaii with a summit of 13,803 (feet) and 4,207 (meters) above sea level – a challenge for those hikers out there!

A lot of people opt for driving to the summit. There is a very accessible road to get here, and the most beautiful scenery is on the drive up.

Some experience altitude sickness because of their height, so you may want to grab some pills if you think you’ll be affected by this.

Also, take a jacket with you! Temperatures at the top will be cold, and it can get pretty windy!

Hawaii – Best Things to do in Maui

Hana highway.

Discover the famous highway, which is nicknamed the Road to Hana. The 53 miles, 85 kilometers of curvy, winding roads will take you through breathtaking scenery on the island, including many remarkable waterfalls.

You can book a tour for this one if you want to sit back and not stress about your mode of transport. Or you can take the car and drive it yourself, go with your partner or friends and make a trip out of it.

Give yourself plenty of time, and be sure to drive slowly! Some spots have very narrow and dangerous roads, so caution must be taken when moving.

There are numerous places you can stop by the car to take in the views or have a bite to eat. This is at the top of our list of Maui’s best things to do!

Travel Guide to Hawaii - Hana Highway

Relax on Maui’s Beaches

You’re in Maui, the sun is shining, and you’re not feeling like a strenuous day full of hiking. Don’t worry! One of the best things about the island of Maui is you have plenty of beaches to choose from. Grab your favorite book and music and head to one of these beautiful spots.

Kaanapali is probably rated as one of the best beaches in Maui. With its numerous resorts and stunning beach walk, you can’t go wrong visiting this one.

Jurassic Park Tour in Hawaii - Kaanapali Beach

Next on our list is Makena, divided into two beaches – known as Big Beach and Little Beach. Both offer gorgeous white sands where you can swim or snorkel. If you want a more secluded beach, head to the small cove of Little Beach.

Wailea (known as the water of Lea) is another famous beach; if you don’t mind the crowds during peak season, then be sure to visit this one! Put this on your list of things to do in Maui.

Kapalua Coast Trail

A beautiful hike along the coast with gorgeous green views of the island. This is considered one of the best things to do in Maui!

This hike is more manageable and, in total, is around 2 miles. Family-friendly trail – make sure you wear appropriate shoes as some parts are sand or gravel.

So, now you have all the information you need on Hawaii’s culture, lifestyle, and the tropical world of the Hawaiian Islands.

Whether you are going on vacation, making it your next digital nomad spot, or having an adventure with your family. Hawaii and the Hawaiian Islands are places everyone will always love for the incredible beauty in the islands and the people.

A paradise in the middle of the ocean waiting to be explored by many. Filled with natural beauty, adventure, and beaches you’ll dream of for a lifetime.

11 Jurassic Park Spots That You Can Actually Visit

Prehistoric beauty

Most of us have seen every Jurassic Park movie (or at least the original), which was a childhood fantasy, a nightmare, and the adventure of a lifetime being realized on the big screen in 1993. Aside from the highly realistic dinosaurs and easy-to-imagine-happening-in-real-life plot line, the landscape and scenery in Jurassic Park is spectacularly stunning and it’s even more amazing that you can actually visit many of the spots where the movies were shot.

Isla del coco, costa rica.

It’s a popularly held belief that the inspiration for Isla Nublar in Jurassic Park came from Isla del Coco in Costa Rica. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located 550 kilometers (340 miles) off the coast of Costa Rica and the only way to reach this mystical place is by boat. The journey takes upwards of 36 hours but the dramatic landscape and verdant vegetation makes it easy to see why this place might have inspired one of the greatest dinosaur movies of all times.

A good place for hiding from dinosaurs

Red Rock Canyon, Mojave Desert, California

The scene in the beginning of the original Jurassic Park where Dr. Alan and Dr. Ellie are working on an archeological dig before they are recruited to visit the park for the first time was shot in the Red Rock Canyon, California. This is the only scene, outside of studio shoots, that was shot on the mainland in the United States; the remaining outdoors scenes all take place in Hawaii.

Deep in the desert

Kualoa Ranch, Oahu

The heart-pumping scene where Dr. Alan and the kids are caught in the midst of a Gallimimus stampede and duck behind a massive fallen tree to avoid being trampled and spotted by the T-Rex that’s chasing the herd was filmed on the Kualoa Ranch in Oahu. The infamous fallen tree is actually still on the ranch and is marked by a Jurassic Park sign.

Look familiar?

Nā Pali Coast, Kauai

When the cast first approaches Isla Nublar in the movie, you are actually seeing the Nā Pali Coast in Kauai.

This just feels like Jurassic Park

Olokele Valley, Kauai

In the first movie, once the cast is inside the park, the electric fence that the T-Rex eventually breaks through when the power fails was constructed near the Olokele Valley in the northwest part of Waimea .

Watch out!

Ho’opi’i Falls on Kapa’a Stream

Set in the Dominican Republic in the movie, the scene where the lawyer, who is later eaten off the toilet, goes to inspect the amber mine was actually filmed on the Kapa’a Stream in Kauai. These beautiful falls are relatively unknown to tourists but you can hike to the falls by following the Kapa’a Stream . There isn’t a well-marked path, so expect this hike to be challenging even though it isn’t very long. This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path adventure and will make you feel like you’re right alongside Dr. Alan.

It’s a treacherous hike to this Jurassic gem

Hanapepe Valley, Kauai

When the Jurassic Park cast is in the helicopter flying into Isla Nublar, the shots of the densely forested valley were filmed in the Hanapepe Valley. You can actually take a helicopter tour while you are in Kauai on which you’ll be able to recognize the spectacular Manawaiopuna Falls.

Surely you remember this iconic waterfall

Puu Ka Ele Reservoir, Kauai

The legendary moment when Dr. Alan, Dr. Ellie, and the rest of the original cast members encounter the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar takes place on the Puu Ka Ele Reservoir. This is one of the only truly peaceful dinosaur encounters for the rest of the movie.

Valley House Plantation Estate, Kauai

The iconic Visitor’s Center facade is actually the front of the Valley House Plantation Estate on 6191 Hauaala Road in Kealia, Kauai. The estate is priced at $24 million dollars and features three residences, two waterfalls, mountain and ocean views , and 102 private acres of land. The interior shots of the Visitor’s Center took place in the studio in Los Angeles, California.

This is real

Mount Wai’ale’ale, Kauai

The infamous Jurassic Park main gates were constructed at the base of Mount Wai’ale’ale deep in the middle of Kauai. The gates have since been removed but there are two poles that were left standing to mark the famous entrance. You can hike the Waikoko Forest Management Road (which is approximately 12.8 kilometers/8 miles long) to walk right to the spot where Jurassic Park was almost opened to the world.

The wettest place on the planet

Kuhio Highway, Kapaa, Kauai

The outdoor cafe were Dennis Nedry agrees to smuggle out dinosaur embryos from Jurassic Park, set in San Jose, Costa Rica, in the movie, was actually filmed on the waterfront in Kapaa, Kauai. San Jose, Costa Rica , is actually a landlocked city in Costa Rica and is nowhere near the coast.
