Absolutely incredible experience. My children both have autism. One of them has always been ok with the dentist but the other has been terrified by it. He has only been able to stay in the chair for 10-20 seconds. A few years ago, he was able to sit through an entire cleaning when we went to another amazing dentist office called "Milestone Dentistry" in Lutz. Unfortunately, they are a very long drive for us and they stopped accepting our insurance. We tried A Safari Dentist and my son was happy with it! We were told by a previous dentist that my oldest had a cavity and the other had several almost cavities. I did some research and both of my children started using alkalizing toothpaste and probiotic mouthwash. We can to A Safari and they showed me on the X-rays that my children no longer have shadows so no more cavities! They also asked if I wanted fluoride during the cleanings and I said no. I saw absolutely no judgement at all and they happily made a note in our records. Most other dentists have given me a hard time about that. I was particularly impressed with how friendly all of the staff are and how patient and knowledgeable Dr Brandon was with my questions. I am so glad we have found a local dentist that is honest, patient, and fun :)

Dr Yarbrourg was very unprofessional and rude. Staff never followed up with us to make sure my son was wearing retainer correctly for 6 months. I went to every visit and not once did they mention his retainer. My son faithfully wore it 24/7 and come to find out after 30 days he was suppose to stop and only wear it at night. After about 2-3 months of wear it broke and it was replaced. At that time, once again, staff never mentioned how often he should be wearing it differently then the day he first got it. Now 6 months later it broke again. I asked staff what other options we have for a retainer because they keep breaking over use. They showed me different ones and come to find out then I was informed he should be only wearing it at night. I was very upset for my son was faithful wearing day and night per directions from the beginning for the past 6 months. After 30 days they said he should of wore it only at night. If we would of known this the retainer would of never broke down like this. I asked why the staff never informed me of this direction. There response was "You signed the contract when you got the retainer and it said it in there." Every time I go to a dentist they always ask how often you floss? Why would this not be any different when going to an orthodontist when they are getting your teeth straight? I would think this would be a common practice. Dr. Yarbroug then says to me "YOU NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILTIY" amongst other things. Very rude, unprofessional to say that to a mother who faithfully showed up to every appointment and made sure he wore his retainer, AND faithfully gets cleanings done on her son. REALLY??? Unbelievable! The staff manager apologized for the lack of professionalism that Dr. Yarbrourg exhibited towards me and informed they would have a discussion with the staff for the lack of follow up in regards to not informing my son or me the proper hours he should be wearing his retainer. Six consistent months/visits went by and not one staff member mentioned the use of his retainer (Despite him having it in on every visit). Due to the lack of their follow up/communication we paid for a replacement retainer which could of been avoided if we had the support and information from the staff the proper hours of use. (Not just a contract that you sign that says you have to pay if they loose or break and the hours of use that you signed 6 months prior). You go to an orthodontist for guidance and direction. You pay good money for getting your teeth straight. I don't know about you but when I go to a doctor I would hope to have their guidance on how to use their products correctly. In conclusion, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS FACILITY due to how Dr. Yarbrough treats and speaks to his patients who are paying him money for him and his staff to do their job. BEWARE!! He is RUDE and not professional!

Unnecessary dental interventions, including the extraction of 'cavities' under anesthesia or laughing gas instead of fillings, are being conducted. Furthermore, there is a lack of insurance coverage verification for excessive fluoride treatments and prescribed fluoride toothpastes, resulting in unforeseen expenses for patients. It's all about where they can make the extra dollar.

We visited A Safari Dental for the first time last summer. They said my child had a cavity, so I scheduled a filling. In the meantime, I asked around about pediatric dentists and more than one friend told me they got second opinions before they moved forward with treatments at A Safari. So I scheduled a new patient appointment at a different dentist in the area. They took new xrays and said my child did not have any cavities. So unfortunately, I cannot recommend this dentist because it seems like they just want to offer treatments that are not neccesary for children.

Both my kids go here and the hygienists, assistants and doctors have a lovely demeanor. They are patient and helpful and my toddlers are so proud of there visits. Thanks for your support.

This is a great place to take your kids for their dental needs. Staff is very efficient and we have always been taken care of in a timely manner. The décor is awesome and each room has monitors with Disney movies etc. In the waiting room they now have iPads for the kids to play on.

I would have given this facility 5 stars if it weren't for one person at the receptionist desk. Reception is such an important part of a facility because it allows the patient or consumer to see the face of your business. This is especially important when you're working with children. I'd like to feel confident that my child is in good hands. I was met by Valerie with passive aggressiveness and rude remarks. She didn't want to discuss insurance and passed my inconveniences to Maria, who was more than happy to help and was very nice to help me with our insurance issues. Dr. Brandon and Christine were amazing with my daughter. It's a shame one negative person can make such a huge impact.

Great place! The staff are always friendly and nice. The waiting area will definitely keep your children entertained till they are seen. Your able to walk in the back with your children and see what is going on and in the back there is ample amount of room for everyone. Overall it is family oriented and I drive from Clearwater to there just because they provide such great care.

Staff is always helpful and smiling. The place has been created with children in mind... everything from the decor, to the wording, to the tools utilized. They provide a child friendly place that allows children to feel safe while they learn the importance of dental care.

Dr. Alvarez received her B.S. degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Miami in 1991, her dental degree from the University of Florida in 1995, and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in May 1997 from the Medical College of Georgia. 

Dr. Alvarez is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

Dr. Ron Yarbrough, DMD

Dr. Burton believes in excellent customer service for his patients, and in providing honest treatment plans for those wishing to enhance and improve their smiles. Yarbrough Orthodontics began from the ground-up, in North Tampa in 2010. We now have 3 locations: one in the North Tampa area, one in Clearwater and A Safari Dental in New Port Richey.

Dr. Burton is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), Southern Association of Orthodontists, and the Florida Association of Orthodontists. He takes many, many hours of continuing education annually to keep up to date on the latest trends and educational advancements in the orthodontic field. He is a certified and accredited orthodontist and dentofacial orthopedic specialist.

Dr. Ana Maria Puebla, DMD, enjoys talking to her patients about their dental care goals and providing customized treatment plans designed for their specific needs. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences, School of Dentistry, where she also completed a one-year General Practice Residency. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, where she received a Certificate of Achievement Scholastic Excellence. Dr. Puebla is fluent in English and Spanish.

Dr. Andrew Farahat, General Dentist

Pediatric Dentistry

At A Safari Dental, we offer a full range of pediatric dental services to ensure that all of our young patients receive comprehensive dental care. In addition to conducting initial examinations to assess a child’s oral health, parents can also take their children to A Safari Dental for regular cleanings, during which our team of board certified pediatric dentists will polish and remove any plaque from the surface of teeth. We also conduct fluoride treatments during cleaning appointments to help protect a child’s enamel and prevent the development of cavities.

Additionally, we use digital X-ray technology to help screen for dental diseases, as well as monitor the position and development of incoming teeth. We care deeply about our young patients’ safety, which is why we rely on digital x-ray technology that emits 90% less radiation than typical film digital x-ray machines. Furthermore, to help better protect against cavity development, we can also administer easy-application sealants that don’t require any numbing.

We recommend that children have a recall examination six months after their initial examination to continue proactive monitoring and diagnoses, as well as conduct another cleaning.

A Safari Dental can also accommodate children in need of custom mouth guards to protect against sports injuries.

INITIAL EXAMINATION

As a children’s dentist, our doctors are trained to diagnose disease. The examination includes screenings for oral pathology, an evaluation of growth and development, an orthodontic needs assessment, a gum disease evaluation, a visual examination for tooth decay, as well as an evaluation of any current restorations, concerns or complaints from the patient/parent. The dentist will also discuss risk factors for disease, instructions for oral hygiene and information related to nutritional counseling.

Also known as Dental Prophylaxis, this process removes plaque, a substance formed in the mouth from food, saliva and bacteria. If present, the cleaning also removes calculus, which is plaque that has hardened on the tooth surface and requires professional instrumentation to remove. In addition, the cleaning helps polish the teeth to make them smooth and remove stains from the teeth. With a cooperative patient, a special dental cup and gritty toothpaste are used to achieve these goals.

Following the cleaning and flossing procedures, fluoride will be applied to your child’s teeth to help maintain the enamel in its strongest condition. The foods we eat and the things we drink can dissolve some of the mineral content out of the enamel, which is the first stage of a three-part process in creating a cavity in a tooth. The fluoride reinforces the tooth structure and can actually reverse a small cavity that is present in only the enamel.

X-rays are an important way to diagnose dental disease as they allow the dentist to see portions of the mouth that the eye cannot see. These items include decay in between the teeth, as well as tumors or cysts present in the bone or surrounding undeveloped teeth. The radiographs also determine the presence or absence of permanent teeth and their placement. Modern dental radiographs are very safe and the state-of-the-art digital equipment A Safari Dental uses requires 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays.

Sealants are a tough, plastic material designed to stick to the enamel of the tooth in the grooves where food collects. The tooth is prepared with a special cleanser that is quickly applied then rinsed with water. The sealant material is brushed onto the surface of the tooth and dried with a special curing light to make it hard. The process is very similar to applying nail polish to a fingernail. During this procedure, the teeth do not need to be numb. Sealants reduce the risk of cavities forming in these grooves, which can be difficult to keep clean. These sealants do not last forever and will need to be replaced as they wear away from the tooth surface. Not all teeth are good candidates for sealants and the doctors will determine which teeth could receive the most benefit from the application.

RESTORATIVE PROCEDURES

When dental decay has invaded a tooth, various procedures can be used to treat the disease. Some of the procedures include:

• White Fillings –  A composite (white) filling is a tooth-colored material used to fill small cavities in teeth. These fillings match the color of tooth structure and are very attractive. They require the most minimal tooth preparation, so less healthy tooth structure is removed. These fillings are the material of choice in this practice when the decayed tooth meets the proper criteria for their placement. These fillings do require more diligent home care (diet and hygiene, particularly flossing) than amalgam fillings (silver) or stainless steel crowns (silver caps). Many insurance companies do not pay for the increased cost of these fillings and the parent will be responsible for an increased expense.
• Stainless Steel Crowns –  A silver crown covers the tooth completely and restores it to its original shape and size. Crowns are incredibly strong and provide the necessary protection for any baby tooth that needs root canal therapy. Additionally, when cavities cover more than one-third of the tooth structure or a patient is very young, the crown is the restorative material of choice. The disadvantages of this material are the silver color and the irritation these crowns sometimes cause around the gum line of the covered teeth. These are currently not available in white.
• Pulpotomy –  When decay reaches the nerve of a baby tooth, the infected portion of the nerve needs to be removed. This procedure is called a pulpotomy and is best described as a “mini” root canal treatment. This procedure is performed to help prevent the tooth from abscessing, which would require additional therapy or extraction of the tooth. This procedure is much quicker than root canal therapy performed on permanent teeth and will be completed during the same appointment a stainless steel crown is placed on the tooth.
• Space Maintainer –  When baby teeth in the back of the mouth are lost to decay or abscess more than a few months before they should be lost naturally, the space for the permanent tooth will be lost to the adjacent teeth unless an appliance is placed to keep the space open. This space maintainer is a combination of steel wires and rings that fit appropriate teeth in the area of the lost tooth to maintain the space the permanent tooth will need. This appliance will be fit and cemented into your child’s mouth when necessary and removed as the permanent teeth erupt into position. This appliance requires strict attention to avoid sticky foods and may need to be replaced several times until your child no longer needs it.

6 MONTH RECALL EXAM

Regular return visits to the office are vitally important for keeping healthy teeth. Dental decay progresses very rapidly in primary (baby) teeth. The sooner a problem can be diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated and the less invasive the treatment will need to be. Our goal is to catch as many problems in the earliest stage as possible so that the solution is easier for the patient to tolerate. A new examination will be completed in this visit, as well as cleaning, flossing, nutrition counseling, oral hygiene instruction and fluoride application.

SPORTS INJURY PROTECTION

Athletic mouth guards can help prevent serious dental injuries if your child participates in contact sports. Custom mouth guards can be created after your child loses all of their primary teeth, and these mouth guards provide the best fit. When primary teeth still exist in your child’s mouth, various options can be used and can be discussed at your examination appointment.
