What Happens If You Miss Your Cruise Ship?

It’s a sight that most cruisers dread: Watching their ship sail out of port as they sprint down the pier. But for one reason or another, missing a cruise ship is a situation that travelers could easily find themselves in.

The most recent example is a group of eight Norwegian Cruise Line passengers who were left behind in São Tomé and Príncipe off the western coast of Africa after their private tour ran long, causing them to miss the ship’s scheduled departure time. Those passengers spent several days and thousands of dollars (which were later reimbursed) attempting to rejoin their voyage.

Cruise ships take their “all aboard” time seriously, as they must adhere to strict docking times in each port, not to mention the fact that thousands of other passengers could potentially be inconvenienced.

The good news is there are simple precautions travelers can take to avoid being left behind at port. But if you do (literally) miss the boat, there are certain steps you can take to help ease the process and ideally meet back up with your cruise at the next port.

How to avoid missing a cruise ship

When planning your time onshore during a cruise, make sure to confirm exactly what time you need to be back on the ship. Most cruise lines advise passengers to be back on board no later than one hour before departure time. This time, usually called the “all aboard” time, is generally announced in daily schedules or displayed at the ship’s exit. If in doubt, ask a crew member at the exit of the ship for the all-aboard time before you disembark.

Another thing to take into consideration is whether you plan on participating in the cruise line’s shore excursions or opt for a private tour. In general, the ship will wait for stragglers “only if the passenger booked a shore excursion through the cruise line,” says Linda Speer , a travel specialist who runs the agency Cruises by Linda. Major cruise lines, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and NCL, have published policies reflecting this.

As for the NCL passengers left behind last month in São Tomé and Príncipe, “given that these guests were on a private tour and did not return to the ship at the communicated all aboard time, they are responsible for any necessary travel arrangements to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call, per our protocol,” a spokesperson for the cruise line told The Guardian . The passengers traveled through six countries to meet up with the ship at its final port of call in Senegal, according to the report. Norwegian ultimately reimbursed the eight guests for the travel costs incurred during the journey, the spokesperson told the outlet.

The terms and conditions of most major cruise lines state that if you venture out on your own in port, you don't have many protections if you miss the ship. “When you book a shore excursion through Royal Caribbean, we guarantee that if your tour is delayed, the ship will wait for you,” the line's policy says. “In the unlikely event that your tour is significantly delayed, and the ship cannot wait, we will make all the arrangements for you to return to the ship at no expense to you. The ship will not wait for any guest faring on their own, as it is their responsibility to be onboard before the ship's scheduled departure time.”

If you do decide to take a private tour, tell your tour guide when your all-aboard time is and discuss a timeline that will get you back to the ship comfortably before the deadline. And of course, it's always smart to set alarms for when it’s time to head back to the ship. Be especially cautious if you’re in a remote port with few options for travel or transfers to the next destination, as missing the ship there would present many more difficulties—like it did for the stranded passengers in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Just in case, be sure to carry a few essential items with you every time you disembark. “Always have your trip insurance card with you as well as a major credit card,” Speer says. These items will be vital in helping you secure travel out of the port in case you do miss the ship.

What about flight delays?

It’s also possible to miss a cruise ship at initial embarkment before the voyage starts, usually due to flight delays or other travel issues. “I always recommend that guests arrive to the gateway at least two days prior to the start of their cruise in case they or their luggage are delayed en route," says Jennifer Gillmore , a travel specialist with Travel Beyond. However, if you weren't able to plan so far ahead and you miss your ship, there are still options to board at a later port.

For example, at Royal Caribbean, “guests who miss their cruise due to travel delays can contact the Emergency Travel Team (ETT) to discuss their options going forward,” the cruise line's policy explains. “In specific situations, when the guest has the proper documentation, it is possible to join the cruise at the next port of call, but all options must be discussed with ETT.”

Usually, if you don't buy your airfare through a cruise line's travel package, or don't buy their travel insurance with your cruise fare, you will be responsible for paying to catch up to your voyage. Per NCL's policy , “if you have bought your own air tickets, independently of Norwegian Cruise Line, you will be responsible for any and all expenses incurred to join the ship."

This is the case for most major cruise companies, but be sure to check your line's policy in advance. There are also independent travel insurance policies that can help cover the costs of meeting up with your ship. (More on that below.)

What to do if you miss your cruise ship

When the crew realizes that there are passengers who didn’t reboard the vessel, they will leave those passengers’ passports with port staff so they can travel to the next port if it’s in a different country. Some cruise lines collect passengers’ passports upon embarkation, while others will go into the passengers’ stateroom to find the documents. So it’s a good rule of thumb to keep your passport somewhere obvious—on the desk or the room safe—so it’s easy for the crew to find.

When you miss a ship at a port of call, go to the port staff first. Each cruise line has a port agent who can help. The line's agent can hand over your passport and can help you contact your ship to make arrangements to meet up in the next port.

The next call should be to your travel insurance provider. “During a travel disruption, contact your provider’s 24-hour assistance team as soon as you can,” says Steven Benna, marketing manager at travel insurance firm SquareMouth . “They will explain your policy’s coverage for the situation and can help you find additional travel arrangements, like catching up to your cruise at the next port.” Be sure to keep any receipts relating to your catchup travel to include when you file a claim with your insurance provider, Benna says.

Two travel insurance benefits can help in this situation, according to Benna: missed connection and travel delay. “If your flight to your port gets delayed, the missed connection benefit was designed to help you catch up at your ultimate destination,” he says. “Alternatively, some policies have a travel delay benefit, which can similarly cover rebooking while also refunding the cost of meals and accommodations for trips delayed at least 3-12 hours.”

Cruisers can buy a travel insurance policy all the way up until the day before their departure and still have the full benefits activated on their departure date. “Whether you planned your cruise way ahead of time or booked at the last minute, you can rest easy knowing you can still get coverage,” Benna says.

Although missing a cruise ship certainly throws a wrench into any vacation, with the right preparations you’ll be back to relaxing on deck in no time.

Can a cruise ship leave without you?

Fran Golden

Let me tell you about the cruise passenger phenomenon of "pier runners." These are folks who are in a port, enjoying the beach, off shopping or otherwise engaged – popular watering holes such as Margaritaville and Señor Frogs are often involved – and lose track of time. If they are lucky and realize they are late, they frantically run back to their ship before it heads to the next port. If they aren't lucky, the gangway is already up and the cruise ship leaves without them.

These sad sacks make for great drama on social media. Search "pier runners" and you'll get the drift.

You don't want to join their lot. A cruise ship can leave without you – and if you get left behind, it will cost you a bundle. Here are ways to avoid that happening, plus what to do if it does.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Set your watch to ship time

The first lesson for first-time cruisers in terms of visits to ports of call is to read your daily newsletter (delivered to your cabin or detailed on a ship app) and understand any nuances regarding ship time vs. what time it is on shore. When you leave your ship at a port of call, make sure your watch or smartphone is set to ship time.

Know when "all aboard" is

Knowing what time you are working with is important because the ship will set an "all aboard" time, when everyone is expected to be back on board. This is different from the sail-away time, usually about a half hour later. It is, however, when the crew starts to pull in the gangways, preventing stragglers from boarding the ship.

That does not mean you should show up at your ship precisely at the all aboard time. Smart cruisers aim to be back at least an hour before the set time, just in case they encounter traffic delays or any other issues getting back to the pier. (If you wander far, add in extra time.)

Related: 6 ways you can ruin your cruise in an instant

The time that you will be expected to be back on board will be posted in the daily schedule, along with a phone number to call in case of emergency. It's a good idea to snap a photo of this information. The cruise director also will make announcements — and a sign will be posted as you disembark the ship — noting the "all aboard" time.

Since it's easy to space out on the beach or get caught up in bargaining for a treasured souvenir, you are best off setting an alarm on your phone to alert you that it's time to head back to the ship. Keep in mind, there is no glory in being the last person back on board.

Book a ship-sponsored shore excursion

If you are exploring on a ship-sponsored shore excursion and it's running late, don't worry. If you purchase a tour through the cruise line, you are guaranteed that the ship will wait if the tour bus is not back by the all aboard time.

do cruise ships leave passengers behind

It's a matter of numbers. The ship does not want to leave dozens of passengers stranded in port, through no fault of their own, and have to pay to get them to the next port of call.

Plan for independent tours to end early

If you book a tour through an independent tour company, you don't get the same guarantee that the ship will wait. That said, established tour operators know ship times and are generally careful to get you back in time. Again, if a bunch of other passengers also booked the same tour, you can worry less about the ship being there when you get back to the pier.

Some operators have their own guarantee that you will get to the ship in time or they will pay to get you to the next port of call. When making reservations with an independent operator, it's a good idea to both look for such guarantees and read customer comments online. Consider any comments about rushing back to the ship as red flags.

If you're arranging a customized private tour, make sure you communicate to your guide that you need to be back at the pier well before all aboard time. That buffer time will serve you well if you run into unexpected delays.

The same consideration applies if you snag a last-minute tour deal at the pier. When you disembark your ship at a port of call, you may be barraged with offers from independent guides, taxi drivers, jitney drivers, rickshaw operators and others offering to show you the town and beyond. Before agreeing to a tour, make sure you understand how far you are going from the pier, and make sure your guide understands "ship time" and what time you want to get back.

If you're late, alert the ship

Every time you board or leave the ship, your key card or RFID device gets scanned. That's so the security crew knows who is on or off the ship. On really small ships, there may be a manual peg board, where you move the peg to red to indicate you are off and green to indicate you are on.

As the all aboard time nears, the ship's security staff will monitor who has yet to return to the cruise ship.

If you know you are running late, call the number you recorded from your newsletter, or call the cruise line's 24/7 number and ask to get a message to the ship. That way, someone will know you're on your way back.

As the ship's all aboard time nears or passes, guest services will try to locate you on board by calling your cabin. An announcement with your name will be made on the ship's public area PA system, asking you to notify guest services if you are on the ship. If there is no response, your name will be called again, this time using the ship's emergency announcement system, which the whole ship hears (meaning your situation is now disturbing any of your shipmates who are in their cabins napping).

do cruise ships leave passengers behind

If your cellphone number is in your guest record, a crew member may try to call you directly.

At the same time, security personnel may be dispatched to search for wayward passengers in the area near the port. They know where to look (hello, Senor Frogs), as they have been through this before.

Find the port agent if the cruise ship leaves you stranded in port

A cruise ship will leave passengers behind on shore if they arrive back at the ship too late. But ship staff have procedures in place to help you out.

If you are not on the ship and the departure time is drawing near, a security officer may enter your cabin and open your safe to locate your passport, driver's license, credit cards or any other important stuff you have left there. They'll also collect your medication and any other necessities you will need because the ship is about to strand you on shore and you will need to make your own way home.

Related: Passport card vs. passport book: What documents do I need to cruise?

If you are a pier runner, and there is still a gangway open when you get to the ship, all will be returned, you'll be chastised and your saga ends there. Otherwise, your passport and other important items will be handed over to a port official who will wait for you to finally show up at the pier.

If you arrive back at the pier only to see your ship sailing away, find the port agent. If he or she has your passport that's a good thing. You will need your passport to fly to the ship's next destination or home (your choice) from the Caribbean or any other international destination. If your passport has not been handed off to the port agent, you will have to contact your home country's embassy or consulate for assistance.

Be prepared to pay your way back to the ship or home

You've missed the ship. You've found the port agent. Now, the "fun" begins. You hopefully are not too close to the limit on your credit cards because you are going to need them. While the port agent may help make your arrangements, it is entirely your responsibility to pay any related travel expenses.

Considering last-minute airfares, and possibly the need to stay at a hotel before your flight, it's going to cost you a bundle to get back to your ship or head home. If you decide to end your vacation, you will have to pay the cruise line to ship the rest of your belongings home as well. Don't expect any reimbursement for missed days on the ship.

Why do ships leave passengers behind?

The captain makes the decision to leave based on port regulations and schedules and other factors. For instance: The cruise line has paid expensive docking fees and does not want to pay overcharges that kick in when a ship is late leaving the pier. Higher fuel charges may also be involved, if your ship has to race to the next port of call due to a late departure. The cruise line is not going to let your mistake cost the company big bucks.

It's important to remember that you are only one of hundreds of thousands of guests and cruise ships have rules to follow – getting back to the ship on time being a big one.

Pier runners tend to look insane — running, shouting, signaling with their arms as the ship's horn blares its departure. You don't want to be the laughingstock of your cruise ship – but it's still better to run and try to board the ship before it leaves. Missing the boat will both ruin your cruise vacation and cost you a bundle. Follow the strategies listed here so you always get back to the port with plenty of time and avoid getting stranded by your cruise ship.

Introduction

Embarking on a cruise vacation is an exciting and memorable experience. The anticipation builds as you board the luxurious ship, ready to set sail into the wide expanse of the ocean. However, amidst the joy and excitement, there is a lingering question that may cross your mind: what happens if the cruise ship leaves you behind?

While it may seem like a far-fetched scenario, cruise ships do occasionally depart without certain passengers on board. Whether due to unforeseen circumstances, delays, or passengers who simply lose track of time, being left behind can be a distressing and inconvenient situation.

In this article, we will explore the reasons why cruise ships may leave passengers behind, the consequences one may face if left behind, the rights and compensation available to affected passengers, as well as valuable tips on how to avoid being left behind on a cruise ship.

So, grab your life jackets and join us as we navigate through the intriguing world of cruise ship departures.

Why do cruise ships leave passengers?

There are several reasons why a cruise ship may depart without certain passengers. These reasons can range from technical issues to passenger negligence. Let’s delve into some of the common causes:

  • Delays: Cruise ships operate on strict schedules, and any delay can have a cascading effect on subsequent ports of call. If a passenger fails to board the ship on time, the captain may have no choice but to leave without them to ensure the itinerary is maintained.
  • Miscommunication: Sometimes, miscommunication between the passenger and the cruise line can lead to a missed departure. It’s essential for passengers to carefully read the embarkation information provided and follow any specific instructions regarding boarding times and locations.
  • Port authorities: In certain instances, the cruise ship may be required to leave port by a specific time, regardless of whether all passengers are on board. This can occur when the ship is subject to maritime regulations or has obtained a limited time slot at the port. Passengers who are late might find themselves stranded on the dock.
  • Unforeseen circumstances: Occasionally, unforeseen circumstances such as medical emergencies or security concerns may force the ship to depart without all passengers. These situations are rare but can arise to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on board.

While the cruise line strives to accommodate all passengers, ensuring the safety and adherence to the published schedule often takes priority.

It is important to note that cruise ships have protocols in place, including mandatory safety drills and attendance checks, to account for all passengers. However, individual responsibility is crucial to avoid being left behind.

Consequences of being left behind

Being left behind on a cruise ship can have a range of consequences, both practical and emotional. Let’s take a look at some of the potential impacts:

  • Stranded in a foreign port: If a cruise ship departs without you, you may find yourself stranded in a foreign country. This can be a daunting experience, especially if you don’t speak the local language or are unfamiliar with the area.
  • Financial implications: Being left behind can lead to significant financial consequences. Not only will you need to arrange for alternate accommodations, transportation, and possibly meals, but you may also incur additional expenses to catch up with the cruise itinerary at the next port.
  • Missed experiences: One of the primary reasons people go on cruises is to explore different ports of call and participate in various activities and excursions. Being left behind means missing out on these unique experiences that you have paid for and were eagerly looking forward to.
  • Emotional distress: Being left behind can result in a range of negative emotions, including frustration, anger, disappointment, and even embarrassment. It can be a disruptive and emotionally challenging experience, particularly if you were traveling with friends or family.
  • Logistical challenges: Being left behind means you will need to make arrangements to catch up with the cruise ship at the next port. This can involve navigating travel logistics, coordinating with the cruise line, and potentially facing additional time and effort to rejoin the cruise.

It is important to remember that the consequences will depend on various factors, including the location, duration of the cruise, and how quickly you can make alternative arrangements. It is advisable to have travel insurance that covers such incidents to help mitigate some of the financial burdens that may arise.

Next, let’s explore the rights and compensation available to passengers who are left behind on a cruise ship.

Rights and compensation for passengers left behind

If you find yourself left behind on a cruise ship, it’s essential to know your rights and what compensation you may be entitled to. While the specific rights and compensation can vary depending on the cruise line and the circumstances, here are some general guidelines:

  • Reimbursement or compensation: Cruise lines may offer reimbursement or compensation for expenses incurred as a result of being left behind. This can include costs related to accommodation, meals, transportation to the next port, and any missed activities or excursions.
  • Assistance with arrangements: The cruise line should provide assistance in making alternative travel arrangements to catch up with the ship at the next port. This can include helping with flights, transfers, and providing guidance on joining the cruise at the earliest opportunity.
  • Possible refunds or future cruise credits: Depending on the circumstances, the cruise line may offer partial or full refunds for the missed portion of the cruise. In some cases, they may also provide future cruise credits as a gesture of goodwill.
  • Travel insurance coverage: If you have travel insurance, review your policy to determine if it covers incidents like being left behind on a cruise ship. Travel insurance can help mitigate some of the financial burdens associated with alternative arrangements and the missed portion of the trip.
  • Legal rights: In certain cases, passengers may have legal rights to compensation beyond what the cruise line offers. It is advisable to seek legal advice to understand your specific rights and options for pursuing further compensation if necessary.

It’s important to communicate with the cruise line as soon as possible if you are left behind. Document the incident, keep receipts for any expenses incurred, and maintain open and clear communication with the cruise line’s customer service department to ensure your concerns are addressed.

However, it’s worth noting that the rights and compensation provided may vary depending on the specific circumstances and the terms and conditions outlined in your cruise ticket contract. Therefore, it’s crucial to thoroughly review the terms and contact the cruise line for specific information.

Now let’s explore some valuable tips on how to avoid being left behind on a cruise ship.

Tips for avoiding being left behind on a cruise ship

While being left behind on a cruise ship can be a distressing situation, there are several steps you can take to minimize the risk. Follow these tips to help ensure you don’t find yourself stranded on the dock:

  • Arrive early: It’s crucial to arrive at the embarkation port well before the designated boarding time. Aim to arrive at least a few hours in advance to allow for any unexpected delays or traffic.
  • Double-check departure times: Always double-check the scheduled departure time of the cruise ship. Mark it on your calendar, set reminders, and ensure you are aware of any changes or updates that might occur.
  • Follow the cruise line’s instructions: Read and follow the embarkation instructions provided by the cruise line carefully. Pay attention to the assigned boarding location and any specific requirements for check-in.
  • Keep important documents and identification handy: Have your passport, boarding pass, and any other necessary identification documents readily accessible. Keep them in a secure yet easily accessible place.
  • Participate in safety drills: Attend the mandatory safety drills without fail. This not only ensures your safety but also helps familiarize you with the ship’s procedures and increases the chances of you being accounted for during attendance checks.
  • Stay connected: Keep your mobile phone fully charged and ensure you have access to the ship’s communication channels. This way, you can receive any updates or last-minute announcements from the cruise line.
  • Be aware of time changes: Pay attention to time zone changes if you are sailing to different regions. Adjust your watches and clocks accordingly to avoid confusion and ensure you are aware of the correct departure time in each port.
  • Travel with a trusted group: If possible, travel with a group of friends or family members. This way, you can help keep each other accountable for boarding times and ensure everyone is present before the ship departs.
  • Stay informed: Regularly check for updates from the cruise line regarding any changes in the itinerary, boarding times, or safety procedures. Stay informed to avoid any surprises or last-minute changes.

By following these tips, you can greatly reduce the risk of being left behind on a cruise ship and enjoy your vacation worry-free.

Now, let’s conclude our exploration of what happens when a cruise ship leaves you.

Embarking on a cruise ship journey is a thrilling adventure, but the possibility of being left behind can dampen the excitement. Understanding the reasons why ships may depart without certain passengers, the consequences of being left behind, and the rights and compensation available is essential for every traveler.

While being left behind can have financial and emotional repercussions, it’s crucial to remember that cruise lines have protocols in place to account for all passengers and minimize the occurrence of such incidents. However, individual responsibility plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth and worry-free vacation.

By following tips such as arriving early, double-checking departure times, and staying informed, you can significantly reduce the risk of being left behind and avoid the logistical challenges and emotional distress associated with it.

In the unfortunate event of being left behind, understanding your rights and seeking appropriate compensation is of utmost importance. Consult the cruise line, review your travel insurance policy, and seek legal advice if necessary to ensure you receive the compensation you are entitled to.

Remember, a cruise vacation should be a time of relaxation, exploration, and enjoyment. By taking proactive measures and staying mindful of the embarkation process, you can minimize the likelihood of being left behind and have a memorable cruise experience.

If Your Cruise Ship Leaves You Behind At a Stop, Here's What You Should Do Next

Jul. 14 2023, Published 2:36 p.m. ET

Going on a cruise can be a thrilling way to travel all over the world, but there are things you should be mindful of before you set sail. Perhaps the most important is that, when you stop at a destination for the day, you have to make sure you're back on the ship before the scheduled departure time.

If you aren't, your cruise will leave you behind, and then you'll be in a rough spot. If you do get left behind, though, there are some steps you can take to make sure you don't get stranded forever.

What happens if a cruise ship leaves you behind?

If a cruise ship leaves you behind, the first thing you should do is locate a port agent. Port agents are typically stationed at the ports near where your ship was supposed to depart from. If cruisers are late getting back to their ship, a cruise may even remove essential items like passports and wallets from the ship so that you have them. Port agents can help you get in contact with your ship or make other travel arrangements.

Additionally, you should start making phone calls to your cruise ship or your cruise line's customer service department. Once you've gotten through, try to make travel arrangements so that the ship can meet you at their next port of call.

If you can't get through to your cruise and you don't speak the local language, you can also call the US embassy wherever you are, and they can help you get in touch with the cruise or arrange travel home.

Generally speaking, if your cruise ship leaves you behind you'll have to arrange for travel either to another port of call or to get home. Depending on where you're stranded, this can be easy or fairly difficult, but it's an important part of planning if you want to continue the cruise or at the very least get home. If you decide to go home, your cruise line can ship you the belongings you left in your room, but it might not be all that cheap.

How often do cruise ships leave passengers behind?

Cruises don't leave passengers behind all that often, but it does happen. The captain is the one who ultimately makes the final call, and ships usually wait for at least a half hour before leaving passengers behind.

If, however, you are late because of an excursion you booked through the cruise line, the ship will always wait for you, because there are likely others who are also late for the same reason.

Passengers should know that cruises don't usually leave people behind, but also be aware that it is a possibility. As a result, they should plan to take precautions to make sure that they arrive back on the ship with plenty of time to spare. There's no reason to risk it, especially when it almost always leads to many extra expenses.

Drawing from my own experiences with numerous cruises, I can attest to the fact that cruise lines enforce strict procedures and precautions aimed at protecting the health and safety of their passengers.

In this article, we’ll delve into the reasons behind passengers being left behind, the communication and accountability measures taken by cruise lines, and the steps they take to assist passengers in such situations.

We’ll also discuss some tips on how you can avoid being left behind and the legal and regulatory framework that protects passenger rights. So if you’re worried about being left stranded at sea, sit back, relax, and let’s explore the fascinating world of cruise ship policies together.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • Arriving at the port well in advance of departure time is crucial to avoid being left behind.
  • Familiarizing oneself with international maritime laws and guidelines, as well as cruise line policies and procedures, is important for understanding passenger rights and protections.
  • Cruise lines hold liability for accidents and incidents, and compensation claims can be filed for injuries or damages.
  • While incidents of passengers being left behind are rare, medical emergencies or non-adherence to the departure schedule can result in being left behind.

Understanding Cruise Ship Policies and Procedures

Understanding cruise ship policies and procedures is essential for ensuring your safety and well-being during your trip. It is crucial to familiarize yourself with the ship’s policies regarding boarding and disembarking procedures. Pay attention to the scheduled departure time and make sure to return to the ship well before that time.

Cruise ships often have strict guidelines for passengers, including mandatory attendance at safety drills and designated meeting points in case of emergencies. Failure to adhere to these protocols can result in passengers being left behind, although this is rare. To avoid any potential mishaps, it is vital to be aware of the ship’s policies.

Rare Occurrences of Passengers Being Left Behind

Seldom are passengers left stranded on cruise ships, making such occurrences a rarity. Cruise ships have strict policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety and well-being of their passengers. However, there are instances where passengers have been left behind due to their own negligence or the negligence of the cruise line.

Passenger negligence can occur when individuals fail to abide by the designated boarding and disembarkation times. It is crucial for passengers to adhere to the ship’s schedule and be aware of the departure times at each port of call. Failure to do so can result in being left behind.

On the other hand, cruise line negligence can also play a role in passengers being left behind. This can happen if the ship fails to communicate changes in the itinerary or if there are errors in the ship’s records that lead to confusion during disembarkation.

Understanding the reasons behind passengers being left behind sheds light on the importance of following cruise ship policies and procedures to ensure a smooth and enjoyable vacation experience.

Reasons Behind Passengers Being Left Behind

Sometimes, it’s easy to overlook the importance of following the designated boarding and disembarkation times, but failing to do so can result in being left behind. There are several reasons why passengers may find themselves left behind on a cruise ship.

One common reason is that they simply did not make it back to the ship on time. Whether they lost track of time or encountered unexpected delays, it’s crucial to be aware of the ship’s departure time and plan accordingly.

Additionally, some passengers may have been delayed due to medical emergencies or unforeseen events. To prevent passengers from being left behind, cruise lines have implemented various prevention measures. These include mandatory attendance at safety drills, clear communication of departure times, and reminders throughout the day.

By following these measures, passengers can ensure they don’t miss the ship. Transitioning into the subsequent section, effective communication and accountability measures play a vital role in preventing such incidents.

Communication and Accountability Measures

When it comes to communication and accountability measures on cruise ships, two key points that should be emphasized are emergency drills and safety briefings, as well as passenger manifest and accountability procedures.

Emergency drills and safety briefings are crucial in ensuring that passengers are well-prepared and informed about safety protocols in case of any emergencies.

On the other hand, passenger manifest and accountability procedures help cruise ships keep track of their passengers, ensuring that everyone is accounted for at all times.

These measures play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of all passengers on board.

Emergency Drills and Safety Briefings

Passengers eagerly gather on the deck, eagerly awaiting the start of their cruise adventure as the crew members conduct emergency drills and deliver safety briefings. These drills are an essential part of ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Crew members demonstrate the proper use of life jackets and guide passengers to designated muster stations in case of an emergency. The drills also include instructions on how to safely evacuate the ship and what to do in case of a fire or other emergencies.

These safety measures are taken seriously, and passengers are encouraged to pay close attention during the briefings to ensure they are prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.

As we transition into the subsequent section about passenger manifest and accountability procedures, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of these measures in maintaining the overall safety and well-being of all passengers.

Passenger Manifest and Accountability Procedures

During emergency drills and safety briefings, passengers are made aware of the importance of following instructions and staying together in case of an emergency.

Now, let’s talk about the passenger manifest and accountability procedures, which are crucial in ensuring cruise ship passenger safety.

The passenger manifest is a detailed list of all individuals on board, including passengers and crew members. This document is used to keep track of everyone and to account for each person in case of an emergency.

Cruise ships have strict procedures in place to ensure the accuracy of the manifest, such as requiring passengers to provide their personal information during the booking process and conducting headcounts before and after excursions.

Passenger accountability is of utmost importance in maintaining safety on a cruise ship. In the event of an emergency, having accurate and up-to-date passenger information allows the crew to quickly identify and locate individuals who may be missing or in need of assistance.

To ensure passenger safety, cruise lines have implemented robust passenger manifest and accountability procedures. These measures help to enhance emergency response capabilities and ensure that every passenger is accounted for during any unforeseen circumstances.

Cruise Line Response and Assistance

Cruise lines are committed to providing prompt response and assistance in situations where passengers may be left behind. They have comprehensive cruise line emergency protocols in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers.

In the event that a passenger is left behind, cruise lines have passenger assistance programs that are designed to offer support and help them navigate the situation. These programs often include providing alternative travel arrangements, accommodations, and assistance with contacting loved ones.

The cruise lines understand the importance of addressing these situations quickly and efficiently, and they strive to minimize any inconvenience or distress caused to the passengers. However, it is also important for passengers to take responsibility for their own safety and follow any instructions or protocols provided by the cruise line.

This ensures a safe and enjoyable vacation experience for everyone on board.

Passenger Responsibilities and Precautions

Amidst the excitement of setting sail, it is vital for individuals to remain vigilant and adhere to the safety guidelines provided by the cruise line to ensure a smooth and secure journey. As passengers, we have certain obligations to fulfill to ensure our own safety and well-being.

One of the most important obligations is to purchase travel insurance. This will provide coverage for any unexpected events that may occur during the trip, such as medical emergencies or trip cancellations.

Additionally, it is crucial to follow all safety instructions provided by the crew, including attending the mandatory safety drills and familiarizing ourselves with the emergency exits. By taking these precautions, we can minimize the risk of being left behind and enjoy our cruise experience to the fullest.

Now, let’s explore some tips for avoiding being left behind without missing a beat.

Tips for Avoiding Being Left Behind

Now that we know about our responsibilities and precautions as passengers, let’s talk about some useful tips for avoiding being left behind on a cruise ship.

First and foremost, it’s essential to arrive at the port well in advance of the ship’s departure time. This allows for any unforeseen delays in traffic or security checks.

Additionally, consider investing in travel insurance that covers trip interruptions or missed connections. This can provide peace of mind knowing that you have financial protection in case of unexpected circumstances.

Furthermore, always keep your personal identification and cruise documents with you, and make sure to stay informed about any changes in the ship’s schedule.

By taking these precautions and being proactive, you can minimize the risk of being left behind.

Now, let’s dive into the legal and regulatory framework that governs the cruise industry.

Legal and Regulatory Framework

To navigate the legal and regulatory framework of the cruise industry successfully, it is crucial for you to familiarize yourself with the various international maritime laws and guidelines that govern passenger safety and ship operations. Understanding the legalities and regulatory compliance is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

These laws and guidelines cover a wide range of aspects, such as ship construction and maintenance, crew training and qualifications, emergency procedures, and passenger rights and protections. They are designed to protect your safety, well-being, and rights as a passenger.

By familiarizing yourself with these regulations, you can have a better understanding of what to expect during your cruise and ensure that you are able to fully enjoy your time on board.

In the next section, we will explore passenger rights and protections, which are an important part of the legal and regulatory framework.

Passenger Rights and Protections

Lastly, compensation is an important aspect of passenger rights, as it determines the amount of financial reimbursement or assistance that passengers may be entitled to in case of any issues or inconveniences during their cruise.

Consumer Protection Laws and Policies

Imagine boarding a cruise ship, filled with excitement and anticipation, knowing that consumer protection laws and policies are in place to ensure your safety and well-being throughout the journey. As a passenger, it’s important to have consumer awareness and understand the industry standards that govern cruise ships.

These laws and policies are designed to protect your rights and provide peace of mind during your vacation.

Safety measures: Cruise ships are required to adhere to strict safety guidelines, including regular inspections, emergency drills, and sufficient life-saving equipment. This ensures that you are in a secure environment while onboard.

Health regulations: Consumer protection laws require cruise ships to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards to prevent the spread of illnesses. Enhanced sanitation practices and medical facilities are a priority for your well-being.

Transparency and accountability: Cruise lines are obligated to provide clear information about their services, pricing, and terms and conditions. This promotes fair practices and prevents misleading advertising or hidden fees.

With consumer protection laws and policies in place, you can embark on your cruise knowing that your rights and safety are prioritized.

Moving on to the next section about cruise line liability and compensation…

Cruise Line Liability and Compensation

As a passenger on a cruise ship, you’ll be relieved to know that cruise lines hold liability and provide compensation in case of any unforeseen incidents or accidents. Cruise ship accidents can range from slips and falls to more serious incidents like fires or collisions. In such cases, passengers have the right to file compensation claims against the cruise line. Most cruise lines have established policies and procedures to handle these situations and ensure that passengers are adequately compensated for any injuries or damages they may suffer. Below is a table summarizing the types of accidents and the corresponding compensation claims that passengers can make:

Knowing that cruise lines take responsibility for accidents and provide compensation should give passengers peace of mind while embarking on their journeys.

In conclusion and final thoughts, it is crucial for cruise passengers to familiarize themselves with the specific policies and procedures of the cruise line they are traveling with. This knowledge will ensure that they are well-informed about their rights and the steps they need to take in case of an accident or incident during their cruise.

In conclusion, it’s worth noting that cruise ships rarely leave passengers behind, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable vacation experience for all. Knowing what you can and cannot bring back with you is essential when it comes to duty regulations. Each country has its own import restrictions, so familiarizing yourself with them before setting sail is important. Some countries have limits on the amount of alcohol you can bring back, while others may require you to pay duties on additional bottles. By understanding these regulations, you can avoid potential issues and ensure a smooth return home with your favorite spirits.

Now, let’s dive into the next section about researching cruise line policies to further maximize your alcohol haul.

Researching Cruise Line Policies

Passengers on a cruise can familiarize themselves with the policies of various cruise lines regarding the permissible quantity of alcoholic beverages they can return with.

Researching cruise line policies is crucial to ensure a hassle-free experience during your trip. Each cruise line has its own set of rules and regulations when it comes to alcohol allowances. By visiting the cruise line’s website or contacting their customer service, you can easily find information about their specific policies.

Understanding customs regulations is also important, as these regulations may vary depending on your destination. It is essential to know the legal limits and any additional fees or taxes that may apply. Once you have a clear understanding of the cruise line policies and customs regulations, you can confidently plan how many bottles of alcohol you can bring back from your cruise.

Checking port regulations is the next step in ensuring a smooth return home.

Checking Port Regulations

Once docked at the port, it’s essential to be aware of the specific regulations in place to ensure a smooth return journey. Researching local restrictions is crucial to avoid any surprises. Some ports may have limitations on the amount of alcohol you can bring back, or they may even prohibit it altogether. It’s important to consult with a travel agent or do some online research to find out the rules for the specific port you’ll be visiting. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Check if there are any restrictions on the type or quantity of alcohol allowed.
  • Look into any special permits or fees that may be required.
  • Find out if there are any age restrictions for bringing alcohol back.
  • Be aware of any customs or duty charges that may apply.
  • Take note of any specific packaging requirements for transporting alcohol.

By researching local restrictions and consulting with a travel agent, you can ensure that you are well-prepared and meet all the necessary requirements when returning from your cruise.

Now let’s move on to determining duty-free allowances.

Determining Duty-Free Allowances

When it comes to figuring out how much duty-free shopping you can indulge in, it’s important to know your limits. Understanding duty rates and calculating savings is crucial in determining how many bottles of alcohol you can bring back from a cruise.

Duty-free allowances vary depending on the country you are visiting and the specific regulations of the cruise line. These allowances typically include a certain number of bottles or liters of alcohol that you can bring back without having to pay any additional duties or taxes.

By understanding the duty rates and calculating the potential savings, you can make informed decisions about how much alcohol you can purchase and bring back with you. Once you have a clear understanding of your duty-free allowances, you can start thinking about packing alcohol in your checked luggage for a worry-free journey.

Packing Alcohol in Checked Luggage

When packing alcohol in your checked luggage, there are a few important steps to follow. First, make sure to secure the bottles tightly and cushion them well to prevent breakage. One option is to use padded wine sleeves or bubble wrap for added protection. Place the bottles in the center of your suitcase, surrounded by soft clothing or towels to absorb any shock. This will minimize the risk of damage during transit. Once you have packed your alcohol securely, it’s time to move on to the next step: declaring it at customs.

Declaring Alcohol at Customs

Understanding duty free allowances and filling out the necessary customs forms will ensure a hassle-free experience at customs. Now, let’s move on to the next step of paying applicable taxes and duties.

Paying Applicable Taxes and Duties

Once you’ve declared your duty-free alcohol at customs, it’s time to settle the bill and pay any applicable taxes and duties.

Paying import fees and calculating duty costs may seem daunting, but it’s a necessary step to ensure compliance with the law. The amount you’ll need to pay will depend on various factors, such as the type and quantity of alcohol you’re bringing back.

It’s important to check the specific regulations of your destination country to determine the exact amount. Customs officers will typically provide you with the necessary paperwork and guide you through the payment process.

Remember, paying these fees is crucial to avoid any legal issues or fines.

Now that you know how to settle the bill, let’s move on to understanding the limits for personal use.

What type of travel wallet or money belt is recommended for keeping valuables secure during the journey?

I recommend using a hidden pouch or an RFID blocking wallet to keep your valuables secure during the journey. These options provide added protection and peace of mind, ensuring your belongings are safe from pickpockets and electronic theft.

Are there any specific travel guidebooks or maps that are particularly helpful for navigating the Rhine River?

I found that the Rick Steves’ Rhine River Cruise Guidebook and the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Rhine River are both excellent travel guidebooks for navigating the Rhine River. The maps included are detailed and helpful.

Are there any specific optional extras that are highly recommended for capturing the scenic views on the river cruise?

For capturing scenic photos on a river cruise, I highly recommend bringing a good camera with a wide-angle lens and a tripod. These will help you capture the breathtaking views and ensure your photos turn out amazing.

Is the Packing List for a Norwegian Alaska Cruise Similar to a River Cruise on the Rhine?

When packing for an Alaska cruise , you’ll need warm clothes and waterproof gear for the unpredictable weather. However, a river cruise on the Rhine may require lighter clothing for the milder climate. The two packing lists are quite different due to the distinct climate and activities on each cruise.

In conclusion, packing for a river cruise on the Rhine is essential to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. By considering the weather conditions and bringing comfortable footwear, you’ll be well-prepared for any adventure that awaits.

Organizing travel documents is also crucial for a smooth trip. Make sure to have your passport, ID, and any necessary visas readily accessible.

Don’t forget to pack toiletries, medications, and travel essentials such as adapters and chargers. It’s always a good idea to have a small first aid kit on hand as well.

To keep yourself energized throughout the trip, bring snacks and water. This will come in handy during excursions and long days of exploring.

For those extra special moments, don’t forget to bring a camera and binoculars. The Rhine offers breathtaking beauty that you won’t want to miss capturing.

Embark on this journey fully equipped and let the river guide you to unforgettable experiences. Bon voyage!

If you’re looking for a fantastic way to explore multiple destinations while enjoying luxurious accommodations and top-notch entertainment, a cruise tour is perfect for you!

Cruise tours offer a unique and convenient way to travel, allowing you to visit various ports of call without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking.

One of the major benefits of cruise tours is the all-inclusive nature, where accommodations, meals, and entertainment are all taken care of in one package.

Additionally, cruise tours often provide a range of onboard activities, such as spas, pools, and shows, ensuring there is never a dull moment.

However, it’s important to consider the drawbacks of cruise tours, such as limited time in each destination and the potential for crowded ships during peak seasons.

Now, let’s move on to the next section about cruise and land combination.

Cruise and Land Combination

When travelers opt for a cruise and land combination, they can enjoy the best of both worlds. They can experience the excitement of exploring new destinations by sea and the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture on land.

This type of tour offers a range of cruise and land activities to cater to different interests and preferences. Whether it’s snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, hiking through lush rainforests, or visiting historical landmarks, there is something for everyone.

Moreover, transportation options are seamless. Cruise ships provide a convenient mode of travel between destinations. Comfortable coaches or trains are available to take passengers to explore the inland attractions.

By combining these modes of transportation, travelers can maximize their time and enjoy a hassle-free journey.

As we delve further into the comforts and amenities on cruise ships, you’ll discover the luxurious experience that awaits.

Comforts and Amenities on Cruise Ships

When it comes to comforts and amenities on cruise ships, there are three key points that I find particularly important: the onboard entertainment, the dining options, and the relaxation and recreation facilities.

The onboard entertainment is always top-notch, with live performances, Broadway-style shows, and even movie theaters.

As for dining options, there is an abundance of choices, from fine dining restaurants to casual buffets, and even specialty eateries.

And when it’s time to unwind, cruise ships offer a variety of relaxation and recreation amenities, such as spas, pools, fitness centers, and even sports courts.

Onboard Entertainment

The cruise tour offers a variety of onboard entertainment options to keep passengers entertained throughout their journey. From live performances to interactive activities, there is something for everyone to enjoy on a cruise ship.

Here are some of the exciting onboard entertainment options you can expect:

  • Live Shows: Experience dazzling performances by talented singers, dancers, and musicians in the ship’s theater.
  • Casino: Try your luck at the onboard casino and enjoy games like blackjack, roulette, and slot machines.
  • Nightclubs: Dance the night away at the ship’s vibrant nightclub with music and entertainment.
  • Movie Nights: Enjoy the latest movies and classics under the stars with the ship’s outdoor movie screenings.
  • Game Rooms: Challenge your friends and family to a game of pool, shuffleboard, or board games in the ship’s game rooms.

Dining Options

Indulge in an array of mouth-watering dining options that will leave you in a state of culinary bliss. The dining experience on a cruise tour is nothing short of extraordinary. Whether you have specific dietary needs or you’re a food enthusiast looking to explore new flavors, there is something for everyone. Vegetarian options are plentiful, with a variety of fresh and tasty dishes that cater to different dietary preferences. In addition to the main dining room, many cruise ships offer specialty restaurants that provide a more intimate and exclusive dining experience. These restaurants feature gourmet menus crafted by world-renowned chefs, showcasing their culinary expertise. From succulent steaks to delectable seafood, each dish is prepared with meticulous care and attention to detail. Take your taste buds on a journey and savor the exquisite flavors that await you onboard. As you relax and enjoy your time onboard, you’ll also have the opportunity to explore exciting destinations and itineraries. This ensures that your cruise tour is truly unforgettable.

Destinations and Itineraries

When it comes to cruise tours, there are a plethora of popular destinations to choose from. Whether you dream of exploring the stunning landscapes of Alaska, basking in the sun on the beautiful beaches of the Caribbean, or immersing yourself in the rich history of Europe, there is a cruise tour for every traveler’s taste.

The length and flexibility of itineraries are also a major advantage of cruise tours, allowing you to customize your trip to fit your preferences and time constraints.

Additionally, many cruise lines offer customizable options such as shore excursions, specialty dining, and onboard activities, ensuring that your cruise tour is tailored to your personal interests and desires.

Popular Cruise Tour Destinations

Contrary to popular belief, cruise tours aren’t just limited to tropical destinations. While tropical locations like the Caribbean and the Mediterranean are indeed popular cruise tour destinations, there are many other options to choose from.

Alaska is a breathtaking destination that offers stunning scenery and the opportunity to see wildlife up close. The Norwegian Fjords are another popular choice, with their majestic cliffs and picturesque villages. For history buffs, the Baltic Sea offers the chance to explore historic cities like St. Petersburg and Stockholm.

One of the benefits of taking a cruise tour is the variety of destinations you can visit in one trip. This allows you to experience different cultures and landscapes without the hassle of packing and unpacking at each location.

As we transition into the next section, let’s explore the length and flexibility of cruise tour itineraries.

Length and Flexibility of Itineraries

Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey where you can truly customize your experience with a range of itinerary options to suit your preferences and make memories that will last a lifetime. When it comes to cruise tours, the length and flexibility of itineraries are key factors that attract travelers.

Here are four advantages of longer cruise tours and the flexibility they offer:

More destinations: Longer itineraries allow you to visit a greater number of ports, giving you the opportunity to explore multiple cities and countries in one trip.

Immersive experiences: With more time at sea, you can indulge in onboard activities, such as spa treatments, entertainment shows, and fine dining, enhancing your overall vacation experience.

Deep cultural immersion: Longer cruises often include overnight stays in certain ports, allowing you to delve deeper into the local culture and fully immerse yourself in the destination.

Relaxation and rejuvenation: Longer cruise tours provide ample time for relaxation, allowing you to unwind and recharge while enjoying the stunning views of the open sea.

With the flexibility of longer cruise itineraries, you can truly create a vacation that caters to your desires. Now, let’s explore the customizable options available to make your cruise tour even more tailored to your preferences.

Customizable Options

Experience the ultimate freedom to personalize your journey with a wide range of customizable options. Cruise tours offer customizable packages that allow you to tailor your trip to meet your specific preferences and interests.

Whether you want to explore historical landmarks, indulge in culinary delights, or simply relax by the pool, there are personalized experiences available for everyone. Imagine waking up to a breathtaking view, embarking on exciting excursions, and enjoying world-class entertainment, all designed according to your tastes. With these customizable options, your cruise tour becomes a unique and unforgettable adventure.

Additionally, working with a travel agent can be incredibly helpful in navigating the many choices and ensuring you get the most out of your cruise tour experience.

Choosing the Right Cruise Line

Opting for the perfect cruise line can make all the difference in your vacation experience. When it comes to choosing the right cruise line, there are a few key factors to consider. Here are some important points to keep in mind:

Cruise line comparison: Research and compare different cruise lines to find the one that aligns with your preferences and interests. Each cruise line has its own unique features and offerings, so it’s essential to do your homework.

Benefits of cruising: Cruising offers a range of benefits, including all-inclusive accommodations, various onboard activities, and the opportunity to visit multiple destinations without the hassle of packing and unpacking. Consider what you value most in a vacation and choose a cruise line that caters to those preferences.

Reputation and reviews: Read reviews from previous passengers to gauge the quality of service and overall experience provided by different cruise lines. Pay attention to aspects such as customer service, cleanliness, and entertainment options.

Itinerary options: Look into the itineraries offered by each cruise line and see if they align with your desired destinations and activities. Some cruise lines specialize in specific regions or types of cruises, so make sure to choose one that suits your interests.

By researching and comparing options, you can ensure that you select the cruise line that best fits your vacation needs and preferences.

Researching and Comparing Options

After narrowing down my options and deciding on a cruise line, the next step in planning my cruise tour is to research and compare the available options. This involves looking into different cruise tour packages offered by the cruise line and comparing their prices, itineraries, and amenities. To make this process easier, I created a handy table below to help me organize and compare the different options:

By comparing these factors, I can find the cruise tour package that best suits my preferences and budget. Once I have made my decision, it’s time to move on to the next step: working with a travel agent to finalize the details of my cruise tour.

Working with a Travel Agent

Once I’ve chosen my dream cruise vacation, it’s time to team up with a travel agent to perfect all the fine details of my incredible adventure on the high seas.

Working with travel agents has many benefits that can make the planning process smooth and stress-free.

Firstly, travel agents have extensive knowledge and expertise in the cruise industry. They can provide valuable recommendations and insider tips to help me choose the best cruise line, itinerary, and cabin for my preferences and budget.

Additionally, travel agents often have access to exclusive deals and discounts that I may not find on my own. They can also handle all the logistics, from booking flights and accommodations to arranging transportation and excursions.

By utilizing the services of a travel agent, I can ensure a seamless and enjoyable cruise tour experience.

Now, let’s delve into what to expect on a cruise tour…

What to Expect on a Cruise Tour

During a cruise tour, travelers can anticipate a truly immersive experience filled with scenic views, exciting activities, and the opportunity to explore multiple destinations in a seamless manner.

One of the main benefits of a cruise tour is the convenience it offers. You can unpack once and wake up each morning in a new location, eliminating the hassle of constant packing and unpacking. Additionally, cruise tours often include various amenities such as onboard entertainment, spa services, and gourmet dining options.

However, there are some cons to consider. Cruise tours can be crowded, and you may not have as much time as you’d like to explore each destination. It’s also important to be aware of additional costs for optional excursions and onboard amenities.

To make the most of your cruise tour, follow these tips for a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Cruise Tour

When it comes to making the most of your cruise tour, there are a few key tips to keep in mind.

First and foremost, packing essentials is crucial for a smooth and enjoyable trip. Be sure to bring comfortable clothing for both on-board activities and excursions, as well as any necessary medications or toiletries.

Secondly, budgeting and money management are essential to ensure you stay within your desired spending limits. Researching ahead of time and setting a budget for activities, meals, and souvenirs can help you make the most of your cruise tour without breaking the bank.

Lastly, interacting with local guides and tour operators can enhance your experience by providing valuable insights and recommendations. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and engage in conversations with them to get the most out of your cruise tour.

Packing Essentials

Don’t forget to pack your sunglasses and sunblock for a cruise tour to ensure you’re ready to soak up the sunny sights on deck. Here are some essential items you should consider bringing on your trip:

Comfortable walking shoes: You’ll be exploring different ports of call, so make sure to bring a pair of comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing.

Swimwear: Whether you plan on lounging by the pool or taking a dip in the ocean, don’t forget to pack your favorite swimwear.

Formal attire: Most cruise lines have formal nights, so be sure to pack some dressier outfits for these special occasions.

Power strip: Cabins often have limited outlets, so bringing a power strip can be a lifesaver for charging all your electronic devices.

Portable charger: Keep your phone and other devices powered up while you’re out and about exploring.

Once you have all your essential items packed, it’s time to move on to the next section about budgeting and money management.

Budgeting and Money Management

To make the most of your trip, it’s essential to carefully budget and manage your money while on board. Cruise tours offer a wide range of activities and experiences, but they can also be expensive if you’re not careful. Here are some budgeting tips to help you save money on your cruise tour.

First, set a daily spending limit and stick to it. This will help you avoid overspending and keep track of your expenses.

Next, take advantage of all-inclusive packages and onboard promotions. These can offer great value for money and help you save on dining and entertainment options.

Additionally, consider booking shore excursions independently instead of through the cruise line. This can often be cheaper and give you more flexibility in choosing activities.

Lastly, avoid unnecessary onboard expenses like spa treatments or specialty dining unless it’s something you really want to splurge on.

By following these budgeting tips, you can make your cruise tour more affordable without sacrificing the fun.

In the next section, we’ll delve into the importance of interacting with local guides and tour operators.

Interacting with Local Guides and Tour Operators

Interacting with local guides and tour operators during a cruise tour is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. However, it can also be challenging, especially when faced with language barriers.

But fear not, as cruise lines often provide multilingual guides who can bridge the gap and enhance your experience. These knowledgeable locals are passionate about sharing their heritage and will take you to hidden gems that you might miss on your own. From bustling markets to serene temples, they will introduce you to the heart and soul of the destination.

Soak in the vibrant colors, unique flavors, and captivating stories that make each place special. Let their enthusiasm ignite your curiosity and open your eyes to new perspectives.

As we move on to the next section about reviews and recommendations, remember that these interactions with locals can greatly impact your overall cruise tour experience.

Frequency of Cruise Ship Abandonments

Cruise ship abandonments are rare events, but they do happen. In recent years, there have been a handful of cases where cruise ships have been forced to abandon passengers due to mechanical problems, weather conditions, or security threats.

How often do cruise ships leave passengers behind?

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), there have been a total of 10 cruise ship abandonments since 1980. This means that the average number of cruise ship abandonments per year is about one every two years.

However, it is important to note that this number is likely an underestimate, as some cruise ship abandonments may not have been reported. Additionally, the number of cruise ship abandonments has decreased in recent years. For example, there were no cruise ship abandonments in the 2010s.

What are the different reasons for cruise ship abandonments?

There are a number of different reasons why a cruise ship might be forced to abandon passengers. These include:

  • Mechanical problems: A cruise ship may be forced to abandon passengers if it experiences a mechanical failure that makes it unsafe to continue sailing. This could include a problem with the ship’s engines, steering, or hull.
  • Weather conditions: A cruise ship may also be forced to abandon passengers if it encounters severe weather conditions, such as a hurricane or a storm. In these cases, the ship may be unable to safely navigate the rough waters.
  • Security threats: A cruise ship may be forced to abandon passengers if it is threatened by pirates or other security threats. In these cases, the ship may be unable to safely dock in a port or may be forced to leave the area altogether.
  • Medical emergencies: A cruise ship may also be forced to abandon passengers if there is a medical emergency on board. This could include a fire, a natural disaster, or a terrorist attack. In these cases, the ship may be unable to provide adequate medical care to its passengers.

What are the consequences of cruise ship abandonments for passengers?

Cruise ship abandonments can have a significant impact on passengers. These impacts can include:

  • Financial loss: Passengers who are abandoned by a cruise ship may lose their money, belongings, and travel documents. They may also be forced to pay for their own transportation home.
  • Emotional distress: Passengers who are abandoned by a cruise ship may experience emotional distress, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Physical injury: Passengers who are abandoned by a cruise ship may be injured in the process. This could include injuries from the abandonment itself, such as falls or injuries from the rough seas, or injuries from the aftermath of the abandonment, such as exposure to the elements or a lack of food and water.

What can be done to prevent cruise ship abandonments?

There are a number of things that can be done to prevent cruise ship abandonments. These include:

  • Ensuring that cruise ships are well-maintained: Cruise ships should be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure that they are in good working order. This will help to reduce the risk of mechanical failures that could lead to an abandonment.
  • Preparing for severe weather conditions: Cruise ships should have a plan in place for dealing with severe weather conditions. This plan should include procedures for evacuating passengers in the event of a storm or other emergency.
  • Ensuring that cruise ships have adequate security: Cruise ships should have a security plan in place to protect passengers from security threats, such as pirates or terrorists. This plan should include procedures for responding to security threats and evacuating passengers in the event of an attack.
  • Providing adequate medical care: Cruise ships should have a medical team on board that is capable of providing adequate medical care to passengers. This will help to ensure that passengers can receive the care they need in the event of a medical emergency.

By taking these steps, cruise lines can help to reduce the risk of abandonments and ensure the safety of their passengers.

Causes of Cruise Ship Abandonments

Cruise ship abandonments are rare events, but they do happen. In recent years, there have been a handful of cases where cruise ships have been forced to abandon passengers due to mechanical problems, weather conditions, security threats, medical emergencies, or other factors.

The accident was caused by a failure of the ship’s steering system. In 2019, the Viking Sky cruise ship was stranded in the Norwegian Sea due to a loss of power. The ship was eventually rescued

These problems can persist for months or even years after the abandonment.
  • Financial loss. Passengers who are abandoned by their cruise ship may lose their belongings, their travel documents, and their money. They may also be forced to pay for their own transportation home, medical care, and other expenses.

  • Damage to the cruise ship industry. Cruise ship abandonments can damage the reputation of the cruise ship industry and lead to a decline in tourism. This can have a negative impact on the economies of coastal communities that rely on the cruise ship industry.

4. Prevention of Cruise Ship Abandonments

There are a number of steps that can be taken to prevent cruise ship abandonments, including:

  • Improved safety standards. Cruise lines should adopt and enforce strict safety standards to ensure that their ships are properly maintained and that passengers are adequately protected in the event of an emergency.
  • Increased training for crew members. Crew members should receive comprehensive training on emergency procedures, including how to evacuate a ship in the event of a fire, a sinking, or another disaster.
  • Better communication between crew members and passengers. Crew members should be able to communicate effectively with passengers in the event of an emergency. This can help to ensure that passengers are aware of the situation and that they are able to follow instructions.
  • Increased preparedness for emergencies. Cruise lines should have a comprehensive plan in place for responding to emergencies. This plan should include procedures for evacuating the ship, providing medical care to passengers, and communicating with authorities.
  • Other measures. Cruise lines can also take other steps to prevent abandonments, such as providing passengers with life jackets and emergency supplies, and ensuring that the ship has adequate fuel and supplies to complete its voyage.

By taking these steps, cruise lines can help to prevent the abandonment of their ships and protect the safety of their passengers.

Cruise ship abandonments are a rare occurrence, but they can have a devastating impact on passengers. By taking steps to improve safety standards, increase training for crew members, and better communicate with passengers, cruise lines can help to prevent these incidents from happening.

  • Answer: Cruise ships rarely leave passengers behind. In fact, it is estimated that only one in a million passengers is left behind.
  • What are the most common reasons why passengers are left behind?
  • Missed embarkation: The most common reason why passengers are left behind is because they miss their ship’s embarkation time. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as arriving at the port late, not being able to find your way to the terminal, or having your identification documents rejected.
  • Medical emergencies: Another reason why passengers may be left behind is due to a medical emergency. If a passenger becomes ill or injured and is unable to board the ship, the cruise line may decide to leave them behind in order to get them the medical attention they need.
  • Other reasons: There are a few other reasons why passengers may be left behind, such as being denied boarding due to a criminal record or outstanding warrants, or being caught smuggling prohibited items onto the ship.
  • What can I do to avoid being left behind?
  • Arrive at the port early: The best way to avoid being left behind is to arrive at the port at least two hours before your ship’s scheduled departure time. This will give you plenty of time to check in, find your way to the terminal, and go through security.
  • Double-check your embarkation time: Make sure you know your ship’s embarkation time and that you have it written down somewhere. It is also a good idea to set an alarm on your phone or watch so that you don’t forget.
  • Keep your identification documents handy: You will need to show your identification documents when you check in for your cruise. Make sure you have your passport, driver’s license, or other government-issued identification with you.
  • Be aware of the medical conditions of your fellow passengers: If you know that someone in your group has a medical condition that could require them to be evacuated from the ship, make sure you let the cruise line know in advance.
  • Be aware of the prohibited items list: The cruise line has a list of prohibited items that are not allowed on board. Make sure you don’t try to bring any of these items with you.
  • What happens if I am left behind?
  • If you are left behind, the cruise line will typically try to arrange for you to be transferred to the next available ship. However, this may not always be possible, and you may have to find your own way back home.
  • If you are left behind due to a medical emergency, the cruise line will typically arrange for you to be taken to a local hospital.
  • If you are left behind due to a criminal record or outstanding warrants, the cruise line may not be able to help you. You may have to find your own way back home and deal with the legal consequences of your actions.

Can I sue a cruise line if I am left behind?

  • Answer: It is possible to sue a cruise line if you are left behind, but it is important to note that the law varies from state to state. In general, you will need to prove that the cruise line was negligent in leaving you behind. This means that you will need to show that the cruise line knew or should have known that you were at risk of being left behind, and that they failed to take reasonable steps to prevent it from happening.
  • What damages can I recover?
  • If you are successful in suing a cruise line, you may be able to recover damages for your actual losses, such as the cost of your airfare, hotel, and other expenses. You may also be able to recover damages for your emotional distress.
  • How much does it cost to sue a cruise line?
  • The cost of suing a cruise line will vary depending on the complexity of your case. However, you can expect to pay at least a few thousand dollars in legal fees.
  • Is it worth suing a cruise line?
  • Whether or not it is worth suing a cruise line will depend on the specific facts of your case. You will need to weigh the cost of litigation against the potential damages you could recover.

What can I do if I am left behind by a cruise ship?

  • If you are left behind, the first thing you should do is contact the cruise line. They will be able to provide you with more information about your options and how to get back home.

Here are some key takeaways from this article:

  • Cruise ships leaving passengers behind is a rare occurrence, but it does happen.
  • There are a number of factors that can contribute to this, including weather conditions, mechanical problems, and human error.
  • The vast majority of cruise ships are safe and reliable, and passengers can rest assured that they are unlikely to be left behind.

Pier runner: What to do if you miss your cruise ship?

Author: Gillian Carmoodie

Published on: 27 November 2023

Cruise itineraries are tight enough to merit leaving late passengers behind. What happens when a passenger misses their ship and what should you do if you find yourself watching your cruise sail on without you?

If you’re a cruise regular, chances are you’re familiar with ‘ pier runners ’ – those who return to their cruise ship late and consequently have to make a mercy dash down the pier in-order not to be left behind. It can be an amusing scenario – until it happens to you, of course. All that mocking and viral internet activity aside, ask yourself: would you know what to do if your cruise ship left you behind? Across various lines and itineraries, as a cruise ship passenger, you are generally expected to arrive in port and board your cruise ship at least an hour before departure. This is applicable regardless of whether you are first getting on board your cruise, or after exploring a given port during a guided excursion. It is easy to assume that a cruise ship will wait for all of its nominated passengers, given the high booking fees involved. Unfortunately, this is incorrect. Arrive late and it’s highly likely that your cruise ship will leave you behind despite all the running, waving and shouted pleas you can muster. This scenario may even happen if you’re first meeting up with your cruise ship via a flight booked by your chosen cruise line. If your flight is delayed, you may find yourself without a ship to catch. While this may seem illogical and somewhat unfair, be assured there are good reasons behind why this happens. It’s not that your ship’s crew don’t care about leaving you stranded in port, or how much your cruise package has cost you. In fact, it’s nothing personal at all. Primarily to blame are tight shipping schedules as well as multiple factors that are beyond your captain’s control.

Why a cruise ship leaves without late passengers

Cruise ships leave late passengers behind due to various reasons and, often, many are at play at once. For example, did you know that a cruise ship’s schedule is planned at least two years or more ahead of an actual tour? This is because many different people, across multiple locations, all work closely to ensure that a cruise goes to plan and in safety. If a cruise ship delays its departure, not only does that inconvenience fellow passengers but it can also cause logistical problems for other ships trying to dock at the next port.

Additionally, depending on geography and overall use of the next port, a cruise ship may have arranged to meet with a local harbour pilot for assistance while navigating into port.

This needs to happen at the precise, pre-arranged time and has usually cost a considerable sum to arrange. If the cruise ship is subsequently late, the cruise line may also incur substantial penalty fees. Elsewhere, in the next port, tour guides and drivers who had planned to greet passengers from the ship may find their timetable no longer matches with the cruise’s late arrival. This can result in cancelled or shortened activities on top of the frustrating disruption for all. While a cruise ship can technically go faster to make up for lost time, this is usually not regarded as a suitable alternative to simply leaving on schedule. This is because engines that are working harder will consume more fuel and a large ship’s engines are particularly thirsty, especially when under load.

Ultimately, it is the captain’s decision whether to wait for late passengers or not. However, in most cases, with so many pressures to leave on time, a captain will usually opt not to disrupt the planned schedule. Time is money and if you are late, you will usually find yourself stranded in port with your cruise ship disappearing off into the horizon.

If the worst happens – what not to do

While adrenaline flows, impulsive action in response to your departing cruise ship may seem like a good strategy, but in most cases, it is not. Should any crazy idea pop into your head of somehow catching the ship as she leaves, forget it. Your efforts would most likely leave you looking foolish or even prove dangerous.

Even with a vehicle, it’s not going to happen. If we can’t convince you, perhaps this amusing clip by Jeremy Clarkson on a 2014 episode of Top Gear might...

While there have been past cases of passengers boarding their cruise ship shortly after it has left port, these incidences are rare.

Amusingly, a woman who had missed her Fred Olsen ship in Gibraltar was reacquainted with the vessel via the port’s pilot boat, safely delivering both her and a bag of just-purchased La Senza underwear to the missed ship. However, this was very much an exception. Elsewhere, following a disagreement with her husband, a 65-year-old woman jumped into the Atlantic after missing her Marco Polo cruise ship at the Portuguese port of Funchal.

Convinced her husband was on board, she managed to swim a third of a mile out to sea before getting into difficulty. Found by local fishermen four hours later, she was rescued while barely conscious and suffering from hypothermia.

Missed your cruise ship? Here’s what to do

It’s well-known that cruisers who miss a ship’s departure are destined for a tricky and expensive time ahead but don’t panic. Staying calm and in port while making the best of a bad situation is absolutely your best game plan.

Firstly, worrying and frustrating as it is to be left behind, do remember your manners. You are now unexpectedly stranded in a new place and tempting as it will be to vent your frustration at anyone in close proximity, it will not usually be that particular person’s fault - nor will getting annoyed help your plight.

You will likely require all the assistance you can attract from the community you’ve been left behind in, so aim to make friends and not foes of people around you.

Your first goal should be to seek guidance and make decisions quickly based on what you can find out.

Try to avoid agonising over the ‘what ifs’ and instead concentrate on what needs to be done. For now, you have logistics to sort and you will thank yourself later if you can keep a lid on emotion and feelings of overwhelm.

Your best source of advice and help will come from within the port itself. Most cruise lines have an agent - known as a port agent - stationed in each of their scheduled docking points.

As soon as you can, make yourself known to the relevant port agent and give them as much detail as they require. It will all help.

do cruise ships leave passengers behind

If you find yourself without proper identification or don’t speak the local language, call your country’s Embassy that is located closest to the port you’re in.

They can help figure out next steps and potentially put you in contact with those who can assist. If a language barrier exists, they may be able to speak to others in the port on your behalf.

You may find that, upon liaising with the port agent, you will then be able to access some of your belongings, including your passport, your mobile phone and, if relevant, some medications.

If the ship crew were able to find them, these items will have been removed from your cabin to allow you the possibility of planning your next move.

Additionally, your port agent should be able to make contact with your ship as well as helping you with alternative arrangements. The best option is usually to take the next available flight to the ship’s upcoming port where you may be able to rejoin your cruise.

However, this will be determined by timing as well as your willingness and, most importantly, whether cabotage law applies at the ship’s next stop.

Cabotage law can restrict the number of ports where foreign-registered ships can legally pick up and drop off passengers. Your port agent should be able to advise you on this aspect as well as your options overall.

If applicable, you may also wish to speak with your cruise line, travel agent or travel insurance provider who may be able to assist with other elements of your dilemma.

At all times, stay patient and try to co-operate wherever possible. You must also be mindful that any decisions you come to and any arrangements made will normally be at your own cost.

While incurring additional costs on holiday is never pleasant, aim to make your decisions both sensibly and promptly. This is particularly true if you hope to meet-up again with your cruise ship elsewhere. It’ll mostly come down to timing so try not to delay unnecessarily.

Finally, bear in mind that if you opt to return home, you will still need to obtain your belongings from the cruise line.

This is another expense that will have to be borne by yourself but, other than making the initial arrangements, there will be nothing else you will need to do for your cruise line will have everything shipped out to you.

Whatever you decide, with luck, you’ll soon be underway again whether that be back home or onto the next port.

Home » Can cruise ships leave passengers behind?

Last updated on September 18th, 2023 at 07:49 pm

While it doesn’t happen too often that a passenger gets left behind, people arriving late is all too common.  If you stand out on the deck, shortly before the ship is scheduled to depart, you’ll likely notice the last few stragglers running for their life in order to get back to the ship before the gangway is pulled back. It can be quite entertaining to watch.

Yes, cruise ships can leave passengers behind when departing from a port, and it’s usually caused by people just not paying attention to the time, or their shore excursion has been delayed and they are getting back late to the ship.

DON’T BE LATE RETURNING TO THE CRUISE SHIP

In general, if a large number of passengers are going to be late getting back to the ship due to a late shore excursion, the ship will wait. However, if you’re just late – the ship will leave you behind and the worst part – if you wish to re-join the cruise at the next port, you will need to arrange transportation (flights) at your own expense.

Why will ships leave without passengers? Ships are usually on a pretty tight schedule, and it can cost a lot of money if there are delays in leaving a port. We all pay port fees for our cruise, and this goes toward the cost of the ship docking at the port.

Ships can be fined for not leaving at the scheduled time, especially if it’s a busy port. Also, if a ship is delayed leaving port, they often have to speed up to get to the next port on time, which can burn through a lot of fuel. All in all, it’s really up to the captain if he/she decides to wait, or determines it’s time to pull out without someone.

So, how do you avoid getting left behind? There are few ways:

1. Pay attention to the time.

Before you get off the ship, make sure you know what time you need to be back. You can find this information in your daily cruise news and there will likely be announcements before you get off the ship.

Also make sure you know if the time is “ship time” or “port time” if there has been a time change while at sea. If you don’t wear a watch, be careful relying on your cell phone especially if there is an hour or two difference between the ship time and the port time. It might be helpful to set an alarm for yourself, especially if you plan on enjoying a few of the local alcoholic beverages .

If you have been tendered into a port, make sure you know what time the last tender leaves (and try to get on before that). Lines can be long and the tender boats can fill up fast the closer you get to boarding time.

2. Take an excursion instead of going off on your own.

Going off on your own can be tricky if you’re unfamiliar with your port, unless you are really conscious of the time, and do some research of the port prior to arriving.

While the cruise line always says it’s best to take their shore excursions because they are guaranteed to get back to the ship on time, there are other independent tour companies that guarantee the same thing, and often at a lower price than what the cruise ship charges.

Shore Excursions Group  is a good example of this. All of their tour operators are fully aware of what time your ship departs and the tours are designed with this in mind, giving you plenty of time to spare to get back to the ship. In the very rare occurrence that you don’t make it back in time, Shore Excursions Group will fully pay for your meals, hotel costs and transportation to the next port, to meet back up with the ship.

Just be responsible for yourself and make good decisions. You don’t want to end up like this:

Cruise Passenger

What happens when cruise ships leave guests behind?

Every guest’s desire for a bucket-listed cruise vacation can swiftly become a nightmare the moment a cruise ship leaves a guest behind.

This same misfortune happened recently to eight cruise passengers on Norwegian Dawn after they failed to return to their ship on time. The guests went on a private shore excursion during a visit to Sao Tome and Principe on March 27. The incident happened just a week into the ship’s 21-night voyage from Cape Town to Barcelona.

While cruise lines have strict protocols to avoid such unfortunate incidents, the harsh reality is that guests do, occasionally, find themselves stranded at ports. They not only test the limits of their resources but, to some extent, the cruise line’s crisis management capabilities. Such a scenario has far-reaching consequences not only for those guests left behind but other guests in future.

NCL's Norwegian Dawn reportedly leaves some guests behind in Africa.

What happens when a cruise ship leaves several guests behind after failing to return to the ship on time?

Cruise passengers must be aware of the fact that cruise ships run on tight schedules. The rule of thumb is that a cruise ship will not wait for its late passengers. In the event that guests are not yet onboard and the ship is ready to leave the port, the crew will enter the guest’s cabin. Consequently, the crew will remove essential items such as passports and medicines and give it to the line’s port agents, which is customary protocol. Moreover, these port agents can assist those stranded guests in figuring out what their next step should be.

In most cases, if a cruise ship leaves guests behind they will be reunited with their cruise ships in the next port of call. This is after communicating with the cruise line and arranging alternative transportation, mostly at the passenger’s expense.

On ship-sponsored excursion

Guests who book shore excursions through the cruise line usually receive an added protection. In most cases, the cruise ship will wait for those guests for as long as possible. But in the event that the ship has to leave some guests behind, the cruise line will cover the expenses incurred in transferring the guests to the next port of call.

On shore excursion booked through third-party

There’s a different rule for shore excursions booked through a third party. In that event, guests left behind have the option of heading home or trying to get to the next port of call. But the downside is that guests will have to cover all the expenses required to be reunited with their cruise ship. That includes food, accommodation and transportation such as flights.

There are a variety of reasons why a cruise ship must leave guests behind. But regardless of the cause, the impact on affected passengers can be severe, both emotionally and financially. Just imagine being faced with the prospect of navigating unfamiliar surroundings and even dealing with language barriers. Worse, they arrange for themselves alternative transportation and accommodations. Suffice it to say that these stranded travellers find themselves in a series of unexpected challenges.

How to avoid being left behind

Be punctual.

Guests must pay close attention to embarkation and disembarkation schedules. This is especially so during shore excursions. It is a must that travellers allow ample time to return to the ship after shore excursions or overnight stays.

Book line-sponsored excursions

Cruise lines always make sure that they get all their passengers onboard especially for line-sponsored excursions. In most cases, cruise ships even give ample time for passengers to get back to the ship. And in the event that the ship has to leave some guests behind due to unforeseen circumstances, the cruise line shoulders all the cost in reuniting guests with the ship.

Be mindful of the time gap

Cruisers must always be mindful of the time differences, especially when sailing across time zones. There are instances when ship time is different from port time. In this case, guests are advised to set their watches and clocks to ship time to avoid confusion. Moreover, an alarm clock will also come in handy and prevent guests from running late in their return to the ship.

Stay informed

Cruise passengers are advised to be familiar with the cruise ship’s policies and protocols on tardiness and missed check-in times. Reading reviews and news about these topics before the voyage is one way to stay informed to avoid experiencing such an unfortunate scenario yourself.

Stay in contact

Guests must make sure that they have reliable means of communication, such as a charged mobile phone, to stay in touch with the cruise line or travel companions. This way, they could check whether they’re running late or just in time for embarkation after shore excursions.

Respect local laws

Travellers, especially during shore excursions, are always advised to respect and obey local laws. There are instances where laws of some ports of call could pose legal issues. In return, they potentially cause delays or prevent timely return to the cruise ship.

What to do when left behind by a cruise ship

Seek help from port agents.

Cruise lines always have designated port agents. This is to ensure that the needs of passengers left behind are properly addressed. Port agents also serve as a line of communication between the guests and the cruise line. Furthermore, they could also help those travellers left behind to be reunited with the cruise ship in the next port of call.

Go to the embassy

Whenever travellers are stranded or left behind in a foreign country, it is always advised that they seek the help of their embassy whenever possible. Embassy staff can help stranded guests on they plan to do next. They can also make calls to help passengers with their problems. There are also instances where an embassy can pave the way for a stranded guest to be reunited with their cruise ship.

Have your travel documents intact

Cruise passengers must make sure that they have their essential documents with them. These documents could include a passport, cruise documents, identification cards, credit cards and other necessary travel documents. These will be crucial for making alternative travel arrangements and dealing with local authorities, if necessary.

Document or record  everything

Travellers who are left behind (especially in foreign countries) must keep a detailed record of all communication with cruise lines. Also, it is advised that they document expenses incurred and any other relevant information that may be required at a later date. This documentation may be useful if guests need to file an insurance claim. It will also comes in handy when seeking compensation from the cruise line.

Seek assistance from local authorities

Being left behind especially in a foreign land is both discomforting and worrisome. So, if a guest encounters any difficulties or feels unsafe, they first must seek assistance from local authorities.

Be patient and cooperative

It’s a given that being left behind is a disappointing experience. But it is also important to remain patient and cooperative, especially with the cruise line and authorities. Having a calm and tactful demeanour will help resolve the problem more efficiently.

What Happens When You Miss The Cruise Ship?

Richard Simms

Richard Simms

  • October 22, 2018

It’s the nightmare of every cruiser: Being left behind as the cruise ship sets sail without them. And while we all know it happens, what we might not be quite so aware of is what happens next.

How does a ship make the decision to leave someone behind? And when that happens, is the passenger due a refund?

How Cruise Passengers Wind Up Being Left Behind

Carnival Triumph Cozumel

We’ve all seen them. The “runners,” sprinting down the pier to get back to the ship before it leaves the port. Maybe they stayed at Senor Frogs a little too long, or did a little too much shopping. But for whatever reason, they’re running late… and flat-out running down that pier as their fellow passengers — usually with drinks in hand — lean over railings or sit on balconies to cheer (and jeer) their progress.

Most of the time, the runners make it back to the ship on time, even if just barely. But every now and then, someone gets left behind. And it’s safe to say that when that happens, they aren’t exactly happy about the situation.

But it’s equally safe to say that this isn’t a situation the cruise line is happy about either, as it always results in an unhappy passenger who will no doubt take their complaints to social media and perhaps even the press… even if, in the vast majority of cases, the cruiser is likely to be the one with whom the fault lies.

How To Avoid Being Left Behind

Nassau Bahamas Carnival fascination

1. Keep an eye on the time. This may sound like pretty basic advice, but you’d be amazed how often people simply lose track of time or don’t leave themselves enough time to get back to the ship.

2. Make sure you’re on “ship time.” When you disembark, announcements will be made as to what time you need to be back on board. Where confusion sometimes sets in is when the port being visited is in a different time zone. Pay attention to whether the ship and the port of call are operating on the same time. Also, make sure that your iPhone or other devices didn’t automatically switch to the local time if the ship is not doing so.

3. Book excursions directly through the cruise line. Yes, you’ll likely pay more than you would if you booked an excursion independently or through an outside agency. And if you’re an experienced traveller or great at time management, go for it.

However, it’s worth noting that if for some reason, you are late getting back from an excursion booked through the cruise line, the ship will generally wait.

Why? Because they know where you are. When you book independently, that’s not the case.

For all the crew knows, you’ve found love with a local and decided that you are leaving everything you own behind and living in his hut on the beach from now on (or at least until you sober up).

That said, we freely admit to being gamblers who look for outside excursions in order to both save money and maybe find something a bit more exotic and off the beaten path. So far, we’ve never wound up running down that pier or being left behind… knock wood! But we know we’re taking a risk, and it’s one you have to think long and hard about when booking excursions.

What Happens Before The Ship Leaves?

carnival elation jacksonville

In addressing this topic recently after a Carnival Cruise Line Ship departed a port minus one passenger,  brand ambassador John Heald made it clear that the decision to leave without a cruiser is not made lightly. He also ran through the steps which are taken before the ship pulls anchor and leaves port. While the process varies a bit from line to line, the same basic steps are generally followed.

The procedure followed by Carnival ships, as explained by Heald, are:

NASSAU BAHAMAS cruise pier

1. The technology used to track which passengers are (and are not) on board is given a quick check.

2. The names of the missing passengers are announced over the ship’s PA system “just to see if they are on board,” Heald said, “and maybe their card did not register.”

3. If there’s still no indication that the passenger is on board, a second announcement is made, this time, Heald said, “through the general emergency system.” Both these announcements typically ask that the missing passenger or passengers get in touch with the Guest Services desk immediately.

4. If they have a contact telephone number for the passenger, the Guest Services manager will attempt to call it.

5. If at this point there’s still no sign of the passenger, that’s when things are stepped up a notch. Crew members (including someone from security) will check the cabin to make doubly sure the passenger isn’t there. “They will then look through the cabin and see if they can [find] any passports,” explained Heald, “and they will also use the one safe master key… to open the safe and retrieve” the passenger’s passport if it happens to be inside.

If passports aren’t found, it’s assumed that the guests have them and/or their official ID with them. But if the documents are found, they’re taken to the official ship’s agent (“We have one in every port of call,” Heald said.). Why? So that the passenger won’t be stranded in the port without their documents. Once the ship leaves, the guest has to decide whether to get themselves to the next port of call to rejoin the cruise, or head back to the port from which the cruise originated.

6. Perhaps most important is the caveat which Heald issued: “The guest is responsible for all fees,” he said, adding that, “it says this clearly in the cruise documents. The ship agent will help book hotels and flights, but yep, it is costly for sure!”

And then… well, the ship, having waited as long as it could, has no choice but to leave. “None of our captains ever want to leave people behind,” Heald declared. “However, he has 3,000 other guests to think of.”

Do Cruisers Who Are Left Behind Deserve Refunds?

Carnival triumph in Cozumel

In a nutshell, no… and that fact is pretty specifically addressed in each cruise line’s contract. And while few people actually take the time to read the cruise contract, they all agree to its terms before stepping aboard any ship. While each cruise line’s contract is slightly different, they all cover the same territory.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line’s basic contract contains the following verbiage regarding passengers being left behind:

“ Any Guest who fails to board the vessel one (1) hour prior to departure is at risk of being left at the port of embarkation or port of call. In such event, Carrier shall have the right without notice to depart without the Guest and Guest shall be fully responsible to pay for or indemnify the Carrier from all expenses incurred to rejoin the vessel at the next port or for his/her own return passage, including, but not limited to, government fees or fines, visa fees, subsistence, lodging, airfare, launch fare, car hire or agency fees… Further, in such event, the entire fare shall be deemed fully earned by Carrier and no portion thereof shall be recoverable by Guest.”

See that part about “government fees or fines?” That’s an important thing to note, because passengers who wind up left behind could incur some of those… and are completely responsible for paying them. The Royal Caribbean cruise contract spells it out thusly:

What Happens If A Cruise Ship Leaves You Behind? A Checklist

' src=

If your cruise ship leaves you behind, call the cruise line’s agent at the port or their customer care. If they cannot help you to board the ship again, travel to the next port or head back home on your own.

Table of Contents

How to avoid missing your cruise ship?

A cruise ship may leave passengers behind if they are late for various reasons.

They may leave you behind due to safety factors, like navigating shallow waters. Or it may be due to fines imposed on them due to late departure. They also have to maintain their schedule. so they cannot wait for passengers who are late. So, it will wait for you as long as the port permits it to stay there.

To avoid missing your cruise ship, here is a checklist to follow:

  • Arrive at your port of departure a day before the cruise. Especially, If you stay far away. Stay in a hotel for the night.
  • Always keep copies of all travel documents with you. And always carry your credit cards.
  • Note down the helpline numbers of the cruise ship. You must also carry the phone numbers of your country’s embassy at the ports you are visiting.
  • After boarding your cruise ship, match your watch with the ship’s time. It is a very important step, especially if you travel in different time zones. Also, note that the local time at the ports and the ship’s time may be different.
  • When going out for an excursion on your own, check the time you have to get back to the ship. Set the alarm at least 2 hours before the ship’s departure time. And set it on everybody’s watch in your group.
  • Do not travel too far from the port. Even if your calculations are right, a sudden mishap on the way may delay your return.
  • Try and book your excursion through the cruise line. The cruise will wait until the group returns or cover the cost of travel to the next port if they cannot stay.
  • And avoid getting drunk during your excursion.

Points to keep in mind in case a cruise ship leaves you

First, cool down.

If you have booked an excursion through the cruise line, then you do not need to worry a lot. It is their responsibility to make sure that you can join the ship at the next port.

But, if you have booked the excursion through another travel agent, here are your options:

  • Meet the agent of the cruise ship at the port. Collect your belongings from him/her if they have removed them from the cruise ship. Ask for his/her help to join the cruise again at the next port.
  • If the cruise line does not have an agent at the port, call the customer care of the cruise line. Follow their directions.
  • If you cannot contact the cruise line in any way, travel to the next port yourself or go back home. But make sure that you have all the travel documents with you.
  • If you do not have the travel documents with you contact your country’s embassy at the port.

Do cruise ships leave you behind?

Ready for your next cruise? Don’t be late or risk being left behind.

Book A Cruise Now

Missing a cruise ship at an outlandish location can result in a ruffle of your plan and might also throw unnecessary challenges for your trip. In this regard, you should know that a cruise ship may leave you behind if you arrive too late.

However, cruise lines have several ways to help you out, and you may contact the ship staff at the port for help.

Will a cruise ship wait for you?

A cruise ship may wait for you for proper reasons. Also, there is a buffer time between the all-aboard time and the gangplank removal time. Also, if you have booked an excursion with a cruise, in usual cases, a cruise line will wait for you.

Additionally, tours are planned by keeping ample time for medical emergencies, traffic, or other unprecedented events. Hence, cruise lines often assure you they will only leave with you if you book tours.

When can you board a cruise ship last?

In short, you can board a cruise ship as long as there is a gangway. If the captain is aware that someone from the cruise has yet to arrive, they will wait as long as the time permits. So, once the ship removes its gangway, you cannot board.

Reasons ships leave passengers behind

The captain decides when to leave a port and similar allied factors in cruises. For example, cruise lines pay to dock and don’t want to pay an extra charge. Besides this, there might be higher fuel charges, and ships don’t want to arrive at the next port late. Hence, ships can leave passengers if it’s charging for the cruise.

How to plan not to miss your cruise?

There are several ways to plan your cruise to take advantage of it. A few of those include the following –

1. Know the time for ‘all aboard’

Knowing the ‘all aboard’ time is crucial, as the cruise authorities expect everyone to be onboard. Although the gangplank removal time is late, you should adjust your clock as per the ‘all aboard’ time.

2. Inform the ship if you are running late

When you board a ship, the authorities scan your RFID device or key card to get the attendance information. Regardless, if you are running late, inform the authorities that the rules will help you with your problem, and they might also wait for you, if at all feasible.

3. Opt for ship-sponsored shore excursion

If you bought a ship-sponsored shore excursion and are running late, the cruise will only leave with you. Also, it is a matter of counts; if many passengers are stranded, they can join on the next port of call .

Final words

Hence, it is evident that a ship may leave you behind if you arrive too late. However, if you arrive late, contact the relevant personnel, who will direct you to the following procedures. For instance, they may arrange to get your luggage back and may contact the cruise so that you can join them in the next port of call.

Breaking news, social media erupts in fierce debate over whether cruise ship was right to abandon late passengers: ‘they know the rules’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A fiery debate has sparked after a cruise denied eight passengers to board the ship after they failed to make the 3 pm cut-off time.

The Norwegian Dawn ship left the tourists on an African island , some without their possessions after the private tour they were on ran late.

The group have now made their way by plane, ferry and car to Senegal, over 2,000 miles from São Tomé and Príncipe, where the Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) ship departed without them last Wednesday.

US couple Jill and Jay Campbell, who were among the abandoned eight cruisers have spent more than $7,000 in travel costs to get to the port in Senegal.

“We truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship follows, they follow those rules too rigidly,” Ms. Campbell told NBC’s the Today Show on Tuesday.

“They really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and that the safety is and the wellbeing of their customers should be the first priority and that should be placed first.

“It was a basic duty of care that they have forgotten about. It does concern us.”

Adam Glezer from  Consumer Champion  told news.com.au it was “ridiculous” the passengers, including a pregnant woman and someone who has a heart condition, weren’t allowed back on — even though the Norwegian Dawn was still at anchor and a São Tomé coastguard took the group on tenders to the vessel.

“Each situation has to be treated on an individual basis — especially the passenger without their medication,” he said.

He said despite the rules, “you need flexibility in situations like this.”

Keep up with The Post's coverage of the Norwegian Cruise debacle

  • Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, were stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.
  • A spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time” by over an hour, according to the company.
  • Americans Jill Campbell and her husband, Jay Campbell, said they are unsure whether they even want to resume the 20-day voyage after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”
  • The eight passengers raced through seven different countries over a span of 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,
  • Doug and Violeta Sanders, a stranded Australian couple, have spoken out about their ordeal , saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”
  • Julie Lenkoff, 80,  suffered a stroke during an excursion on the cruise — and was left “alone” and “helpless” to find her way back to the US, according to her family.

Jim Walker, a Miami-based maritime lawyer, also called out the cruise liner, accusing it of “making a point by abandoning the guests” because they booked a tour that wasn’t through the cruise.

“The reality is that cruise lines aggressively promote cruise-sponsored shore excursions as a fundamental part of their business model, earning tens of millions of dollars a year in income,” he told news.com.au.

“To promote cruise-sponsored excursions where they receive as much as 50 to 60 percent of the profits, cruise lines state that if their guests paid for a cruise-sponsored excursion, as opposed to an independent excursion, the company will guarantee that if the extrusion is late in returning to the cruise ship, it will wait so that the guests are not abandoned ashore.

“In this particular case, it appears that NCL made a point of abandoning these guests simply because they were on an independent excursion.”

Mr. Walker said NCL’s conduct is not only “harsh and uncaring”, but he believes their act was “mean-spirited and vindictive in nature”.

The debacle has caused a huge divide online with some taking the side of the passengers, while others have defended the cruise’s move in leaving the passengers behind in São Tomé.

“Weird that the captain wouldn’t let them board if it was still in port?” one person wrote on Facebook.

“Don’t feel sorry for them they know the rules. It costs the ships a fortune if they don’t leave on time. We have watched people left behind before in Asia. Last trip to NZ there was a very close call also,” wrote another.

Other cruisers said being on time is a “simple” rule passengers need to follow, adding it’s why they only book tours through the ship.

Jill and Jay Campbell.

“This is why you take a risk if you don’t go on a excursion you get through the ship Ruled need too be followed,” a third person wrote, while another added: “That’s why I would never take a cruise or organized tour ever, ever again, no freedom to do what you want, when you want.”

A  TikToker and cruiser Candi Thomas  unleashed on the passengers saying it was the responsibility of the passengers to make it back to the ship on time.

“For those of you who don’t cruise, let me tell you. Before you get off the ship there’s numerous announcements, You have it in your daily planning letter, there are signs … you have to be on board 60 to 90 minutes before that ship is departing,” she said.

The Campbells, from South Carolina, were the only people to have their bank cards and more than a few dollars on them after being stranded.

According to  The Points Guy , if you do not arrive at the port before the boarding window ends, a cruise ship “will most certainly leave without you.”

“Even if you are standing at the pier, waving frantically. That’s because a cruise ship’s departure time is carefully planned and more than just your vacation is at stake.

“Just like airplanes, cruise ships are on tight schedules — much tighter than you may realise.”

Norwegian Cruise Line responds

In a statement provided to news.com.au, the US based Norwegian Cruise Lines said while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour “not organised through us” missed the last tender back to the vessel, “therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3pm local time.”

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.”

The spokesperson said when the guests did not return to the vessel at the all aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol.

The tourists had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul , Gambia on April 1, but the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination “due to adverse weather conditions.”

The spokesperson told news.com.au it contacted the passengers regarding the itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorisation to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal. We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available.”

A TikToker and cruiser Candi Thomas unleashed on the passengers saying it was the responsibility of the passengers to make it back to the ship on time.

The Campbells, from South Carolina, were the only people to have their bank cards and more than a few dollars on them. They said they have spent $7500 on accommodation and food for their fellow castaways.

They explained they were late to the cruise because there was an issue on their private tour.

“They [tour] were like: ‘No problem, we can get you back within an hour,’” Mr. Campbell, who is a schoolteacher.

“For those of you who don’t cruise, let me tell you. Before you get off the ship there’s numerous announcements, You have it in your daily planning letter, there are signs … you have to be on board 60 to 90 minutes before that ship is departing,” she said.

The guide contacted the captain to say the group were going to be late . When they got back to port the ship was still anchored just off shore. But staff would not allow the passengers to board.

“The harbour master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call,” Mr. Campbell told  ABC 4 News South Carolina .

“We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number, they said ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails.’”

Mr. Campbell said it had been a challenging experience, describing it as a “very, very difficult process."

Mr. Campbell said the nation’s coastguard service then put all the passengers on a boat and sailed them out to the cruise ship, but still they were refused permission to board.

He told US broadcaster NBC’s the Today Show on Tuesday that the people of São Tomé and Príncipe had been “very gracious, very hospitable,” and had steered them towards hotels and travel agents.

Nonetheless, he said, it had been a challenging experience, describing it as a “very, very difficult process.”

News.com.au understands the eight guests have now rejoined the cruise in Dakar, Senegal.

Eight Passengers Stranded After Breaking the Number One Rule of Cruise Travel

E xperienced cruisers probably know lots of tips and tricks for traveling on cruise ships: make your dining reservations early, do laundry on board instead of overpacking , and don’t fill your days at sea with back-to-back activities.

But even first-time cruisers know one major rule that applies to all cruise lines, all cruises, and all ships, no matter where in the world you are: don’t miss the boat.

Unfortunately for eight travelers on an African cruise stopped in São Tomé and Príncipe, an island just to the east of Equatorial Guinea, they found out the hard way what happens when you break that rule. When they were late returning to their ship after a day on land, it did what it warned would happen — they were left behind by the cruise.

The group of travelers had booked a daytime excursions through an independent company, rather than booking one directly through their ship, the Norwegian Dawn. While independent tours can be a great way to save money and have a more unique adventure, they come with one major downside, which is that ships won’t wait for passengers who are late. If you book an excursion through your cruise company, the ship is guaranteed to wait for you — but no such offer is made if you book an independent tour.

In various interviews with media outlets, the group recounted that they claimed they told their guide they were running late, causing the guide to call the ship to inform it that passengers would miss the “return to ship” time. By the time the guests finally returned to the port, the ship had finished boarding, though it was still anchored in the harbor. Harbor employees called the ship, and when they got no response, decided to ferry the passengers to the Norwegian Dawn. But the captain did not let them on board, the Daily Mail reports. Per various media sources, the ship did give the passengers their passports, which they had not taken with them.

Two Americans in the group told reporters that they thought the ship should have made an exception, seemingly implying that the following day at sea without a stop meant that it could leave late without consequence. “The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us and then go on the way,” passenger Jay Campbell said. “They had no port to call for the next day, they were simply going to be at sea.”

left behind by ship - Norwegian policy

Photo: Norwegian Cruise Lines

Per Norwegian Cruises’ online documents , it’s the guest’s responsibility to be back to the ship on time. “In all ports of call, it is also the guest’s responsibility to be back onboard the ship no later than one (1) hour prior to the ship’s scheduled departure time. Please be aware that shipboard time may differ from the port of call and it is the guest’s responsibility to follow the shipboard time. In the event a guest misses the ship, it will be the guest’s responsibility to pay all expenses incurred to rejoin the ship,” reads the company’s “Frequent Asked Questions” page.

The travelers are now having to do just that, with the American couple claiming they’ve spent more than $6,000 to cover the group’s time on the island and travel to rejoin the ship in Gambia or Senegal, depending on logistics. Per People Magazine , four of the travelers are older individuals, and one has an unspecified heart condition.

Matador Network recently asked a cruise line exec what happens if passengers miss their ships , and the answer is pretty straightforward across all lines and sailings: they have to pay their way to the next port.

Why ships can’t wait on late passengers

Side view of the Norwegian Dawn ship

The Norwegian Dawn carries more than 2,000 guests and 1,000 passengers, all of whom need to be accounted for before the ship can leave a port. Photo: Dennis MacDonald /Shutterstock

I sailed on the Norwegian Dawn in February 2024, and while it had its ups and downs , the ship does make it very, very clear that it will leave without you if you’re late. It holds about 2,000 people, each of whom has to be accounted before prior to the ship’s departure — which is why the “ return to ship ” time at various ports is often an hour or two earlier than the actual departure time . That gives the crew and captain time to ready for departure. Large cruises like the Norwegian Dawn have to stick to a strict schedule, and can’t easily make changes.

I know this not because I’m a frequent cruiser — in fact, the Dawn was my first big cruise — but because Norwegian Cruise Lines informs you of this non-stop. The evening before you arrive, there’s a ship-wide announcement with arrival and departure times for the next day. The information is repeated — repeatedly — the morning you arrive in a port. The return to ship time is printed on the daily newsletter handed out in each room, on the free Norwegian phone app, and on all the various message boards around the ship. There’s usually a buffer time built into this window to accommodate guests who are only a few minutes late.

people walking toward a cruise ship

All cruise companies have fixed times by which passengers must return to the ship at each port. Photo: byvalet /Shutterstock

It’s also a fact listed on Norwegian’s excursion’s page. It’s one of the main reasons many cruisers exclusively book official cruise excursions, because they’re the only way to guarantee the ship will wait for you if you’re late. (Third-party and independent activity operators are also unlikely to refund you if the ship makes a last-minute change and skips a port of call).

While I support booking excursions with local operators, it comes with the known risk that you’ll be left behind by the cruise ship if you’re late. That’s exactly what happened in this case, exactly as Norwegian’s website said would happen. While it’s unfortunate and understandably stressful for the travelers, it’s hardly the cruise line’s fault, and I know I’d be a little annoyed if I had made it back in time, only to have the whole ship delayed for a small group people who made a poor decision.

By the way: guests getting left behind at a port is very, very rare — hence why this one occasion is making global headlines.

How to avoid getting left behind by cruise ships

Independent excursions offer plenty of benefits — but come with the downside that the ship won’t wait if you’re late. Photo: Suzie Dundas

The easiest way for travelers to make sure they don’t get left behind at a port is to book an official excursion through the cruise line. However, official excursions are often more expensive, and a much smaller amount of the cost goes directly to local communities. Without knowing what company or excursions the stranded passengers booked, it’s impossible to know if they followed the rules below. But the following guidelines can help ensure you don’t end up waiving your ship goodbye from land.

  • Book with a company that does offer a return to ship guarantee : Third-party companies can’t make the ship wait for you, but they can handle all the logistics if you do miss it. ShoreExcursioner.com will pay up to $500 in travel fees if an excursion booked through them causes you to miss your ship, and ToursByLocals will pay for your accommodations and transportation to the next port if you miss your ship. According to their website, it’s only happened twice — ever.
  • Read the online reviews : Plenty of independent operators are reputable and responsible, which means they’re very unlikely to play fast and loose with your return time. The best way to determine if an operator seems reputable is to look at online reviews. Feedback from actual past guests can help you gauge how established and professional the company or tour guide is.
  • Talk to your operator in advance: Reputable operators will be familiar with hosting cruise guests and understand the ins and outs of cruise ship scheduling. If you’re worried about, message your operator in advance. Ask them if they’ve ever has issues with being back on time, whether they’ve served guests on your cruise before, and how much of a buffer they build in for traffic and other potential delays.

8 passengers got stuck in port after a late return. What to do if you miss your cruise.

A group of Norwegian Cruise Line passengers was left behind after returning late to their ship in Africa.

Eight guests missed the last tender back to Norwegian Dawn while the ship was visiting the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the line. They were on a tour not organized through Norwegian.

Two guests, Jay and Jill Campbell, told South Carolina’s ABC 15 News their tour went longer than expected. When they returned, the ship was still in port, and the captain declined to let them board despite numerous attempts to reach Norwegian. At one point, they said, the island nation’s coast guard took them to the ship on a boat but told them to return to shore.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel,” the Norwegian spokesperson said.

Cruise ships are on tight schedules while in port, said Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. “So if they have to leave at a certain time, they have to leave at that time,” she said. “It could be that there's another (ship) coming in. It could be (that) people aren't going to be there to be working on the pier.”

The Campbells told ABC 15 News that they traveled through six countries for 15 hours to reach Gambia, where the ship was due to stop on Monday. However, the vessel was unable to dock due to low tides. Norwegian said it made the change “due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage.”

“While we share in our guests’ disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority,” the spokesperson added.

The cruise line authorized them to rejoin the ship in Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Kuther recommended guests who miss their all-aboard time contact the cruise line to let them know and reach out to their travel agent – if they have one – who can help handle the logistics. She said the nearest U.S. embassy may also be able to assist them.

Are travelers responsible for added expenses?

Travelers who do not board their ship in time are generally responsible for getting themselves to the next port of call, according to Kuther.

Travel insurance won't be much good in that scenario, either.

"Typically travel delay coverage/missed connection coverage is due to a delay of a common carrier such as an airline delay or cancellation for a covered reason which causes you to miss your cruise/tour departure," Meghan Walch, director of product at InsureMyTrip, said in an email. "An excursion supplier not getting you back to your cruise in time is typically not covered."

The Norwegian spokesperson said the cruise line is reimbursing the eight guests for their travel expenses from Banjul, Gambia, to Dakar, but Kuther stressed that kind of compensation is “definitely the exception to the rule.”

How to avoid getting stranded

When choosing a shore excursion, Kuther said it’s safest to book through the cruise line or with another vendor that guarantees to get passengers back to the ship on time or to the next port. Travel agents can help guests find those options, or they can ask operators about their policies directly when booking.

Just in case something does go wrong, travelers should bring a credit card or debit card so they have a way to cover any costs they might incur. Kuther typically recommends bringing an ID “because you don’t want to be carrying around your passport,” but if travelers are going on a private excursion without that kind of guarantee, it’s a different story.

“You probably should have your passport with you because you're going to need it to get on a flight to get to the next port, especially if it's in a different country,” she said.

At the very least, it’s a good idea for travelers to have a photo of their passport on hand, and share a copy with someone back home who is easily reachable.

Cruise insurance: Should you buy it through a cruise line? Maybe not, experts say

She also recommended they make sure their phone or watch is set to ship time rather than the time of the destination, which may be different (the all-aboard time will be on ship time). “So many people get confused with that,” Kuther said.

To be safe, she suggested guests get back to the ship an hour early if they’re exploring on their own or on a self-booked excursion in case they hit traffic or face other issues.

“It's one of those things like, it's not a problem until it's a problem,” Kuther said. She urged travelers not to expect the ship to wait. “If they can, I'm sure they will, but I would never tell someone, ‘Don’t worry about it.’”

Addressing Concerns About Do Cruise Ships Leave Passengers Behind?

Do Cruise Ships Leave Passengers Behind

  • Post last modified: February 11, 2024
  • Reading time: 6 mins read

Cruise ships don’t leave passengers behind often, but it can happen. The captain makes the final call and ships usually wait at least 30 minutes before leaving passengers behind.

What happens if you are late for embarkation?

What if you miss the ship at a port of call, exceptions to the rule – cruise line responsibility, do cruise ships leave passengers behind, what happens if you miss your cruise ship, is there a protocol for handling late passengers, how often do cruise ships leave passengers behind, why do cruise ships leave people behind.

Do Cruise Ships Leave Passengers behind

Why do ships leave passengers behind? The captain makes the decision to leave based on port regulations and schedules and other factors. For instance: The cruise line has paid expensive docking fees and does not want to pay overcharges that kick in when a ship is late leaving the pier.

When it comes to planning a relaxing vacation, many people consider embarking on a cruise ship adventure. However, a common concern that often arises is whether cruise ships have a tendency to leave passengers behind. In this article, we will explore this popular myth, provide insights into the protocol followed by cruise lines, and reveal the truth behind cruise ships potentially abandoning passengers.

It’s essential to arrive on time for embarkation, as cruise ships operate on a tight schedule. It is highly recommended to follow the guidelines provided by the cruise line regarding embarkation times. However, if you are running a little late due to unforeseen circumstances, it’s crucial to inform the cruise line as soon as possible. Most ships will have a grace period, generally about 30 minutes to an hour, to allow late passengers to board.

Nonetheless, it’s essential to note that the ship’s departure is ultimately up to the captain’s discretion. If you fail to arrive within the designated time frame or inform the cruise line of your delay, there is a possibility that the ship may depart without you. It is always better to be safe than sorry and plan to arrive at least several hours before the designated embarkation time.

Another concern that passengers often have is the fear of being left behind at a port of call. Cruise lines are well-aware that excursions and independent exploration can sometimes lead to unexpected delays. To avoid this situation, cruise ships typically establish a clear “all aboard” time, ensuring that passengers are aware of when they must be back on board.

If a passenger fails to return by the designated time, the ship may indeed leave without them. This policy is in place to ensure the punctuality and smooth operation of the cruise schedule, as well as the safety of all passengers. Consequently, it is crucial for travelers to pay attention to the “all aboard” announcements and allow sufficient time for their excursions while keeping track of the time to avoid any potential mishaps.

While the responsibility primarily lies with the passengers to ensure they are on board before the ship’s departure, there are exceptions to this rule. Cruise lines understand that unforeseen circumstances can occur, such as medical emergencies or delayed transportation, which may result in passengers being unable to return on time.

In such cases, many cruise lines have procedures in place to assist and accommodate affected passengers. They may provide support in arranging transportation to the next port of call or even cover additional expenses incurred due to the missed departure. However, it’s vital to keep in mind that these situations are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and it’s essential to communicate your circumstances to the ship’s crew as soon as possible.

How often do cruise ships leave passengers behind?

Cruise ships are one of the most popular ways to travel around the world. With their luxurious amenities, adventurous excursions, and relaxing atmosphere, it’s no surprise that millions of people choose to embark on these floating resorts every year. However, there is always an underlying sense of unease when boarding a cruise ship: What happens if you miss the boat or are left behind at a port?

The truth is, it is not common for cruise ships to leave passengers behind. In fact, the cruise industry works hard to ensure that every passenger makes it back on board before the ship departs. Each cruise line has its own policies regarding departure times, which are clearly outlined in the ship’s daily announcements and communication channels. Passengers are encouraged to adhere to these guidelines to avoid being left behind.

But accidents can still happen, and it is not unheard of for a passenger to miss the boat. Some common reasons include getting lost while exploring the port area, experiencing unexpected delays due to transportation issues, or simply losing track of time. In these cases, it is the passenger’s responsibility to find their way back to the ship before it departs.

In the rare event that a passenger is left behind, the cruise line’s policies and procedures come into play. The ship’s staff will attempt to contact the passenger and their emergency contact to ensure their safety and well-being. The cruise line will also assist with booking travel and accommodations for the passenger to catch up with the ship at the next port. However, these costs are typically the responsibility of the passenger, since missing the ship is considered a personal responsibility.

Ultimately, the best way to avoid being left behind is to plan ahead and be aware of the ship’s departure time. It’s also wise to give yourself plenty of extra time when exploring a new area, and to have a backup plan in case of unforeseen circumstances. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your cruise without worrying about getting left behind.

While it is not common for cruise ships to leave passengers behind, accidents can still happen. Cruise lines have strict policies in place to prevent these situations, but it is ultimately up to the individual passenger to be aware of the ship’s departure time and plan accordingly. By doing so, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

What happens if I miss my cruise ship?

Tales of passengers being left behind at port would strike fear into the heart of the most punctual traveller — this is what to do if it ever happens to you.

The captain will wait as long as possible for latecomers

T hey’re known in cruise circles as “pier runners” and there’s much mirth at their plight on TikTok and YouTube.

These passengers arrive at the port after the ship’s scheduled departure time, only to be faced with a horrible sinking feeling as they watch the lines being cast off and the vessel edging off the dock.

Those who have made it back in time lean smugly over their balconies, filming the scene as often terrified passengers sprint along the dock, desperately hoping the ship will stop.

Of course there’s nothing remotely funny about being left behind; it’s a nightmare. But it happens. Not often, but it does. Ships have schedules to stick to. On large vessels thousands of other passengers’ holidays and their activities at the next port are at risk. Waiting behind in port is expensive for the cruise line too.

If you’re late back and it’s your fault, essentially you’re at the mercy of the ship’s schedule, the port regulations and the mood of the captain.

Passengers are given strict times to be back on board

Why do people miss cruise ships?

People miss ships for all sorts of reasons. Some lose track of time, holed up in some beach bar (booze can be a big factor) or engrossed in shopping. Some may have their phones set to their home time zone or still on airplane mode (which is what you’re advised to do on a cruise ship, to avoid satellite roaming charges). Some have booked excursions independently of the ship’s tours that have not made it back in time, in which case it’s made very clear that the ship will not wait for latecomers.

In defence of cruise lines, you are always told when to be back at the ship. If you’re with a larger line you’ll find the return time on the app, while on smaller ships it will be printed on the daily programme. On both large and small vessels it’s always posted on a board as you disembark. An emergency contact number for the ship is usually printed on your keycard, which you need to get on and off the boat.

What happens if I don’t make it back to the ship on time?

The captain will always wait as long as possible for latecomers, but there comes a point, particularly if the passengers haven’t contacted the ship or the cruise line’s agent (the numbers for both will be on the daily programme), when the ship has to leave. Calls will be put out again and again over the PA for the missing passengers to contact reception, in case they have somehow slipped through the net and are in fact on board (which is extremely unlikely).

• Tips for first-time cruisers

If your ship has to depart, the crew will usually leave your passport with its port agent, who will also wait as long as possible for latecomers. You will then need to work with the port agent to make arrangements to get to the next port. They’re not obliged to do this but most will try to help.

Beyond not being late back, there are precautions you can take for the worst eventuality. Carry a copy of your passport and don’t go ashore without a credit card and a charged phone. I would always keep the number for a decent travel agent at home who can jump in and start booking flights and hotels on your behalf if the worst happens. Contact the ship as soon as possible to let the crew know you will be rejoining at the next port.

Will my insurance cover me if I miss the ship?

This depends on the level of insurance cover you have and the reasons for missing the ship. Staysure, for example, which offers extra cover tailored to cruises, will pay if you miss the ship because you’ve had to go to hospital ashore but are deemed well enough to rejoin your ship at a subsequent port.

Most insurers will cover you if you miss the ship at the embarkation port for reasons beyond your control, for example, your car breaking down or your train being cancelled.

But even specialist cruise insurance won’t pay out because you were waylaid in a bar or nodded off on the beach and didn’t make it back in time.

Does it make a difference if I don’t book one of the cruise line’s own shore excursions?

Yes, it makes a big difference. Book through the cruise line and the ship is guaranteed to wait as it’s their responsibility to get you back. Book independently and the risk is entirely yours.

Sometimes there are compelling reasons not to book an excursion through the ship. You may find something that the ship doesn’t offer, or you may get a better price. You may want to travel in a smaller group, or in a private vehicle. Third-party tour operators have got wise to the fear of missing the ship and nowadays offer all sorts of guarantees. Venture Ashore (ventureashore.com), for example, offers a “back-to-ship guarantee” and says: “If for reasons beyond our control (for example road accidents, extreme weather delays) — we will transport you to your next port of call at no extra cost to you.”

Shore Excursions Group (shoreexcursionsgroup.com), another big provider of third-party excursions, says on its website: “We have never had a customer miss their ship … We are not aware of a single case in which a customer on an independent tour missed a ship.” Like Venture Ashore, the company offers a back-on-time guarantee. If you miss the ship through one of its excursions, your accommodation, meals, transport to the next port and an inconvenience payment of £800 per person will be paid.

On the other hand, taking a local taxi to a distant beach and failing to agree a pick-up time for the return offers no such guarantees.

Of course, going it alone and exploring is one of the joys of travel. Just plan sensibly if you’re on a cruise. Allow lots of extra time to get back to the ship. Have a back-up plan, especially if you’ve hopped on a ferry somewhere or have driven and might get caught in traffic.

Do your homework about the port. For example, on Santorini the queues for the cable car down to the dock can be two hours at peak times. You can walk down the donkey track but the less mobile should factor in the extra wait.

Think about the nature of the trip you’re planning. Is it a long, difficult journey with potential for delays? I once joined a tour from the Indonesian port of Probolinggo to Mount Bromo, a journey that took three hours through lengthy traffic jams. Some shipmates had taken a local taxi to save money. They arrived at the volcano just as we were departing, in a state of panic as their taxi had taken hours to get there and there was no possibility of them returning on time.

Our guide allowed them to jump on to the tour bus, but their day had been both stressful and wasted. Moral of the story: in places that are unfamiliar to you and if a sight you want to see is a long way from the ship, you’re probably better off taking an official excursion for peace of mind.

In places like Antarctica there’s no opportunity to wander off alone

How worried should I be?

You shouldn’t be overly worried about missing your ship, as it’s unlikely to happen. Just respect the ship’s schedule, make sure you always allow plenty of time to get back and check your watch or phone is synced to the ship’s time.

If you’re on an expedition cruise to the remotest corners of the world, rest assured that the ship will never leave without you. You’ll always be in a group with an expedition leader in places like Antarctica or Svalbard and there’s no opportunity to wander off alone and get lost.

If you’re nervous, or less mobile, then perhaps an official tour or a decent third-party tour with a back-to-ship guarantee are better options. But if you’re simply wanting to wander around a city or an island where the ship is docked and you can walk back to it or jump in a taxi, don’t feel intimidated into booking the cruise line’s tours.

Norwegian Cruise says stranded American passengers were over hour late to ship, given passports: report

5 things you didn’t know about traveling on cruise ships

Norwegian Cruise passengers, who were stranded on an African island , missed the boarding time by more than an hour, which is why they were left behind, according to reports.

Eight passengers, including six Americans and two Australians, were on a private tour of São Tomé and missed the 3 p.m. all-aboard call on Friday, the cruise line said.

A cruise line spokesperson originally told Sky News the group was late by more than an hour, which was confirmed by the New York Post.

"When they missed the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. by more than an hour, their passports were left with the local port agent for retrieval when they returned to the port from their private tour (not organized by us), per the protocol," a cruise line spokesperson told the Post.

When passengers on excursions or private tours are late, it's the cruise line's right to sail away to stay on time.

Two members of the group – Jay and Jill Campbell, a South Carolina couple – said in news interviews that their tour guide ran late and did not get them back to the ship on time Friday.

The boat was still in sight of the island, and the Coast Guard ferried the group to the ship, but the captain denied them entry.

"Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel," a spokesperson for the cruise line said.

Jill said the cruise line "followed the rules too rigidly" during a Tuesday morning interview on The Today Show .

"I really feel that they forgot they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and well-being of their customers should be their first priority," Jill said, and the crew had a "basic duty of care that they had forgotten about."

The Norwegian Cruise Line secured the group's passports, as part of protocol, according to their statement, but didn't grab vital medicines, money or other belongings, according to the Campbells.

Among the group is a paraplegic, a man who has a heart condition and a pregnant Delaware woman and her husband.

"When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all-aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port," the company said.

After chasing the ship through several countries, the eight stranded passengers finally caught up and boarded the ship by Wednesday morning, Norwegian Cruise Line told Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Campbells, and Norwegian Cruise Line said they're working on getting answers to followup questions, including an unrelated incident where an elderly woman had to disembark for medical reasons.

Julie Lenkoff, 80, suffered a stroke and potentially a heart attack during the trip, and the cruise line said they thought it was in her best interest to send her to a local clinic on São Tomé.

But her family said the cruise line never called Lenkoff's emergency contacts, and left her behind.

That's when the Campbells learned she was on the same island and took care of her.

"They're heroes," Lenkoff's son-in-law, Kurt Gies, told Fox News Digital about the Campbells. "They saved our mother."

The South Carolina couple helped Lenkoff reach her family in the U.S., and she was eventually flown to the states on a 30-hour flight from São Tomé to Lisbon, Portugal, to Toronto to Stanford Hospital in California "that no one was sure she would even survive."

She's since been admitted to Stanford Hospital, where she's been under constant care, Gies said.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship   by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was   working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
