Famous Lorelei Rock
The most famous of all Rhine legends has its origin at the only 130-metre wide narrow part of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen. Steep cliffs leave no room for the current here and many ship accidents nourished the fairy tale of the fair blonde who, high up on the rock, confused the boatmen's senses. Many myths entwine themselves around this place. In the 19th century Clemens Brentano transferred the name of the rock, which pushes far into the river bed, to the enchanting blonde woman. Pure Rhine romanticism.

Time with your family in Saarburg
A journey through time with action
Saarburg is famous primarily for its picturesque maze of alleys , for the waterfall in the centre of the old town and, of course, for the medieval castle that towers high above the Saar. For families, there is even more to discover...
A tour of the city and museums onboard a sightseeing train or as part of a scavenger hunt
The most comfortable way to explore the old town is onboard a historic sightseeing train : You can learn about the most exciting stories to take place in the area when you’re on the Saartalbahn . But a stroll through the heart of the city is also fun: treating yourself to an ice cream, standing on the bridge over the rushing Leukbach river or going on a scavenger hunt at the museum.
Where? In the Amüseum, right next to the waterfall. In addition to changing art exhibitions, the museum is like a real picture book that shows how people lived in and around Saarburg in previous centuries. Old crafts in particular will amaze modern-day kids: How was it even possible to work with such machines? It’s hard to imagine that everyday things were made with heavy mechanical systems like that.

The Amüseum at the waterfall
Old crafts - fascinating time and again
It even worked very well, as visits to the former Mabilon bell foundr y and the mill museum will also prove. You can experience sensually how the perfection of wonderfully sounding church bells or the finest flour was produced what seems like an eternity ago. Especially in the bell foundry, the motto is “Museum with history(s)” , which is brought to life by Sunday themed tours such as a “bell hunt”. Smelling, hearing, touching – ‘Live in Saarburg’ offers all of these fascinating dimensions and inspires children even when the weather gods would suggest something indoors.

Out into the sun, out onto the water!
The Saar is a lovely river ... not rapid and spectacular, more that of the leisurely variety. Canoeing here with a good portion of your own desire to move or taking a motorised boat tour from Saarburg's old town to the Upper Mosel, for example – that’s pure relaxation and also shows children how incredibly beautiful Germany can be, especially in this place.

Exciting bird of prey watching and rapid rides
Just outside the medieval old town, majestic creatures soar into the sky above the Saar or curiously eye visitors from their aviaries: Eagles, owls, falcons, buzzards, vultures, kites and much more. In the Birds of Prey Park , some of the feathered flight artists put their skills on display every day. And children's eyes light up. A family outing in Saarburg has to include a 700-metre aerial ride on the chairlift up to the Warsberg plateau . This is where you’ll experience the Eureka effect: a breathtaking panoramic view. The little ones will probably be immediately drawn to the nearby sand playgroun d with mud corner, climbing houses, tunnel slides, trampoline cushions and rope slide.
And the summer toboggan run will take you down the mountain at high speed. Curves and jumps provide the adrenaline kick, which you can easily dose thanks to the self-adjustable brakes.

Tips for excursions in the surrounding area
A weekend or day trip in Saarburg is a well-rounded experience. Those who are still curious and have time can drive a few kilometres further towards the mouth of the Saar. The Roscheider Hof Open Air Museum and a reconstructed Roman temple complex are located near Konz – both are real head-turners. With its spacious children's playground and toy museum , the Roscheider Hof is particularly popular with the youngest visitors. Plus there are always special activities to take part in and family days.
Or would you prefer a hike? On the high plateau of Kastel-Staadt , you can really burn off energy on the Traumschleife Kasteler Felsenpfad (approx. 9 km). The romantic hermitag e designed by the Prussian architect Schinkel is also well worth a visit. Younger children will enjoy a round trip on the historic field railway from Hofgut Serrig on the opposite side of the Saar (Sundays only).
Donkey hiking is more than "just" hiking. How about a hike with the two donkeys Bilbo and Gandalf around Mannebach, for example to the Roman temple district near Tawern ?

Saarburg: Little Venice on the Saar
The ruins of Saarburg fortress offer a wonderful panoramic view from above.
Down below, the 1,000-year-old city with its half-timbered architecture and Baroque buildings enchants visitors from around the world.
Saarburg is a jewel and a beloved destination, especially by nice weather. There are many cafes and restaurants around the handsome marketplace, offering spots to sit and observe.
The main attraction, the waterfall, cascades down almost 20 meters right in the middle of the old city.
Back in the Middle Ages, a local waterway called the Leukbach was diverted into the city to allow for the harnessing of its waters.
Even today it pushes the wheels of Hackenberg Mill — although the latter is now a museum. The old city abounds in colourful fisherman's and bargeman’s houses that form a single boundless sightseeing paradise.
Many of its lanes have a Mediterranean flair, with narrow rows of houses sitting along the water atop powerful oak pillars. It’s a look that has earned Saarburg the fond title of “Little Venice”.
The former bell foundry is another sight well worth taking in.
As is the old prince elector’s mill, located directly on the waterfall. It houses the “Amüseum”, a fascinating municipal museum dedicated to traditional trades.
