Last week of March belongs to PGA Tour Champions in the desert now

If we are honest, the inaugural Galleri Classic last year felt, well, a little strange.

Not because the stars of the PGA Tour Champions were back in the desert after nearly 30 years. That felt like it should have happened years earlier, and it was a welcome addition to the desert golf scene.

But that was David Toms and Steven Alker and Steve Stricker out there on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. Shouldnā€™t it be Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson?

The phrase, ā€œI miss the girls,ā€ was uttered time and time again in the first year the Dinah Shore Tournament Course didnā€™t host an LPGA event since 1972. For everything that the PGA Tour Champions brought to Mission Hills Country Club, it was still a distinct change from the LPGA.

The LPGAā€™s history on the Shore Course crept into almost every aspect of the senior event, from trying to figure out differences in the golf course setup from the women to the seniors to constant questions about whether the senior winner would continue the LPGA tradition of the winner leaping into Poppieā€™s Pond next to the 18th green.

More: Bad back and all, Fred Couples hopes to keep playing Galleri Classic for a few more years

As the second year of the Galleri Classic is played this weekend, the seniors have started to take a firm grip on the dates and the golf course that for so long served the LPGA in the desert. In other words, the Galleri Classic is becoming its own golf event, not a replacement event for the LPGA.

Consider what has already happened this week in the second playing of the senior event at Mission Hills. Talk of a player jumping into the lake on Sunday has been limited to one or two hushed questions, far different from 2023 when there was from fans, but not the players, for a leap.

As defending champion David Toms said at the start of this week, ā€œI had some guys, some of my fellow competitors, heckling me on the last hole wanting me to do it (last year), and I said we'll leave that to the girls because that was always a big thing for them at this tournament.ā€

Then there is the new Wall of Champions, separate from the Wall of Champions for the LPGA. The LPGAā€™s wall has plaques of 51 winners along the long wall bordering Poppieā€™s Pond. The new Galleri Classic Wall of Champions is on the bridge crossing the pond to the 18th green. Itā€™s a nod to the past without being part of the past.

Players are loving the course

More importantly, the PGA Tour Champions players are seeing the course as their own, while acknowledging the LPGAā€™s storied history on the Shore Course.

ā€œThis is a great spot for us. It was a great spot for the ladies when they were here, and it's a good spot for us, too,ā€ said Steve Stricker, the 2023 senior tour player of the year. ā€œThe whole setup is really nice. We're here at a good time of the year where weather is usually pretty good. The course is in great shape, the facilities here are really nice and yeah, the demographics, you know, it's a little bit older clientele just like we are so they can kind of relate to us.ā€

Everyone, from fans to officials to the players themselves, are now seeing the week as more of a senior tour week and less of an old LPGA week. Thatā€™s not to say that many fans donā€™t still miss the LPGA major and the golfers who played in it. Someday, if the desert is lucky, the LPGA might return to the desert, though very likely on another course.

But the desert is already lucky to have a PGA Tour Champions event in the desert and on a famed desert course that has proven already it can handle the differences between the top LPGA players and the top senior players quite nicely.

Yes, the LPGA and people in the desert need to work hard to bring the women pros back to the desert. And there will always be some fans who will say, ā€œI miss the girls.ā€

At the same time, desert fans should continue embracing the PGA Tour Champions and the fact that the Shore Course is still being played by top pros on television. As Fred Couples said this week, ā€œIt's a great course, it really is.ā€

Itā€™s great to have the PGA Tour Champions in town, too.

PGA Tour winner says he'll play on while battling Parkinson's

golfworld-2014-04-gwar01-john-senden-rosaforte.jpg

Australian senior tour pro John Senden says he can have a satisfying warm-up session before a competitive round, ā€œbut as soon as the anticipation of hitting the first shot or a difficult shot or even the name called on the first tee, all of a sudden my right arm starts shaking and I canā€™t control that sometimes.ā€

Thatā€™s an extremely challenging way to play golf, of course, and the 52-year-old two-time PGA Tour winner has been doing so for the last 18 months with symptoms associated with his diagnosis of Parkinsonā€™s disease. In an interview with Australiaā€™s ABC Sport , Senden said he has no plans to stop playing.

ā€œIā€™ve got to stay in the gym, stay fit and stay open, because Parkinsonā€™s wants to close you down, wants to make you feel a bit more depressed,ā€ Senden said. ā€œIā€™ve got to stay playing, stay light-hearted about everything. It doesnā€™t actually undermine my strength; it just sort of makes me feel a bit weird sometimes. ā€¦ ā€œItā€™s not going to go away, but Iā€™m still able to play and still enjoying golf.ā€

This is not the first serious health issue in Sendenā€™s immediate family. In 2017, his then-13-year-old son, Jacob, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Senden played the next two seasons on a Major Medical Extension under the tourā€™s family crisis provision, but he eventually had to use Past Champions and 300 PGA Tour cuts made status to continue to compete.

Jacob, 19, is now doing well and caddied for his dad this week in the DP World Tourā€™s Australian PGA Championship, where John Senden missed the cut by one stroke.

ā€œThere was some time back then when we didnā€™t know whether he was going to make it,ā€ Senden told the Australia PGAā€™s website t his week. ā€œBeing together this week has definitely been an inspiration for me especially, and for other kids out there watching him grow over the last six years. Heā€™s got stronger and stronger every year with great doctors and great medical in the U.S. and also another couple of doctors out here in Australia.

ā€œHeā€™s been looking good and feeling like he needs to take it by the horns now and go and live his life.ā€

Sendenā€™s PGA Tour wins came in the 2006 John Deere and 2014 Valspar Championship, and he also captured the 2007 Australian Open. On PGA Tour Champions, Senden has made 51 starts, notching one top-10 finish. He played 19 times this past season, posting one top-25 while finishing 83rd in the season-long standings.

Stephen Ames wins 7th PGA Tour Champions title at weather-shortened Chubb Classic

Stephen Ames has won five times in the last year on the PGA Tour Champions.

It appears the weather chaos of the last few weeks isn’t limited to the PGA Tour’s west coast swing . The final round of the 2024 Chubb Classic at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla., was set to be shortened to nine holes on Sunday due to expected storms, but the round was later canceled outright, making Stephen Ames the champion after 36 holes. Just two weeks ago, Wyndham Clark won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the PGA Tour when the final round was canceled due to weather.

The victory in Naples marks the seventh of Ames’ PGA Tour Champions career ā€” and his fifth in the last year.

John Smoltz’s first round at the final stage of PGA Tour Champions Q-School proves just how tough pro golf is

Ames launched himself to the top of the leaderboard after firing a second-round 64 (-8) that included nine birdies and one bogey to bring him to 13 under par through 36 holes, giving him a three-shot lead over his closest competitor, Rocco Mediate.

“Overall I hit the ball extremely nice. I loved how I hit it,” Ames said on Saturday. “Putting was extremely nice, but it was something that actually saved my round.”

Mediate birdied his 18th hole on Saturday to end up finishing solo second, his best PGA Tour Champions finish since his win at the 2019 Sanford International.

This week, the PGA Tour Champions heads to Morocco for theĀ Trophy Hassan IIĀ at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, which will be played February 22-24. Ames is the defending champion.

John Daly had to withdraw last week after injuring his left hand , but he’s back in action this week on the PGA Tour Champions, which is in Morocco for the Trophy Hassan II.

Perhaps the hand is still a bit tender, as Daly slogged his way around Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, Morocco, to the tune of a 14-over 87. His scorecard showed seven bogeys, two doubles and a quad. He did close with a birdie but is last in the 66-man field at 17 over.

Angel Cabrera is tied for 39th after two rounds. Playing in his first event on the Champions tour since getting out of prison, Cabrera shot 79-72 and is beating 21 others after Friday’s second round.

Good scores have been hard to come by this week. With 132 rounds played so far, there have been only eight rounds in the 60s. Meanwhile, there have been four scores in the 80s.

Phil Mickelson: Golf in ā€œdisruption phase;ā€ LIV Golf will force PGA Tour to go global

Ahead of LIV Golfā€™s event in Miami this week, Phil Mickelson touched on the current state of affairs in professional golf.

Share All sharing options for: Phil Mickelson: Golf in ā€œdisruption phase;ā€ LIV Golf will force PGA Tour to go global

Phil Mickelson, LIV Golf

Earlier this year, PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy called for a unified, global tour. He envisions a circuit where the top 80 players play alongside each other around the world.

McIlroy echoed that sentiment earlier this week, noting that golfā€™s current state of affairs is unsustainable.

LIV Golfā€™s Phil Mickelson agreed while adding that golf is currently in a ā€œdisruption phase.ā€

ā€œWe are in a transitional state where we now have competition, and thatā€™s leading to a lot of disruption and change, but also, the end product is going to make golf more global where the best players travel more,ā€ Mickelson said ahead of this weekā€™s LIV Golf event at Trump National Doral.

ā€œBut right now, we are in the disruption phase, so we are in the middle of the process, and when itā€™s all said and done, itā€™s going to be a lot brighter. But while we go through it, itā€™s challenging. But weā€™ll get there.ā€

For the past two years, the rise of LIV Golf has divided professional golf, separating the best players in the world on competing circuits. This divide came to an apex when the Saudi-backed circuit paid Jon Rahm north of $400 million in December to join LIV.

ā€œI think I agree with that statement. Every time I get asked a question like this, I say the same thing,ā€ Rahm added, sitting alongside Mickelson.

Phil Mickelson, LIV Golf, Hong Kong

ā€œI think thereā€™s room for both. Itā€™s as simple as that. I think we have the opportunity to end up with an even better product for the spectators and fans of the game. A little bit more variety doesnā€™t really hurt anybody. Properly done, we can end up with a much better product that can take golf to the next level worldwide, and Iā€™m hoping thatā€™s what ends up happening.ā€

How professional golf will look in the future remains to be seen.

So many variables needed to be sorted out, such as LIV golfers returning to the PGA Tour, player equity for tour players , and the shape of a new global schedule, among other things.

It also seems as if we are still far away from this reality.

Only three weeks ago, PGA Tour policy board members met with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) ā€”LIV Golfā€™s beneficiaryā€”in the Bahamas for an ā€œintroductoryā€ meeting. Reports indicate that this gathering was an ā€œice breakerā€ of sorts, as substantial negotiations about the future of professional golf were not had.

Still, Mickelson trusts al-Rumayyan to navigate these choppy waters safely to shore.

ā€œI donā€™t know how itā€™s going to end out, exactly, or what itā€™s going to look like,ā€ Mickelson said.

ā€œIā€™m putting my trust in [al-Rumayyan] and where the game is headed globally. But at some point, when it gets ironed out, I think itā€™s going to be in a much better place where we bring the best players from the world. Itā€™s going to open up more opportunities for manufacturing, course design, and for players in different parts of the world to be inspired and enter the game.ā€

2024 Valero Texas Open odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

P layers will have one last chance to tune their game before the Masters this week at the 2024 Valero Texas Open , which is once again being held at TPC San Antonio. Corey Conners will look to defend his title after winning the event last year with a score of 15-under par.

Below, we look at the 2024 Valero Texas Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Rory McIlroy typically doesn't play the week before the Masters but he's in the Texas Open field this year and the betting favorite to win at +1000. Ludvig Aberg (+1200), Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) and Collin Morikawa (+2500) are among the other big names teeing it up this week.

TPC San Antonio is a par 72 and plays at 7,438 yards with very little elevation change throughout the course. It's not an overly challenging course, with the winning score being between 11-under and 20-under par over the last 8 years. However, if the wind picks up it will have a big impact on scoring.

Valero Texas Open ā€“ Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 3:53 p.m. ET.

Ludvig Aberg (+1200)

Aberg is only in his 1st full season on the PGA Tour, but he's already one of the best ball strikers in the world and that's highly advantageous on this course. He ranks 24th in strokes gained: tee-to-green this season and his putting isn't holding him back too much (57th in SG), so he's a perfect fit for TPC San Antonio, even after missing the cut here last year.

Corey Conners (+2200)

It's always hard to expect the defending champion to win in back-to-back years but Conners' course history and ball-striking prowess make him too good to ignore. He's won here twice since 2019 (his only 2 PGA wins)  and hasn't finished worse than 35th in his last 5 starts in this event, using his stellar iron play to propel him to 2 victories.

Valero Texas Open picks ā€“ Contenders

Keith mitchell (+5500).

After blowing a 54-hole lead at the Valspar Championship 2 weeks ago, Mitchell missed the cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open over the weekend after finishing 3-over in his last 5 holes to miss it by 1 shot. He's still among the best players on tour from tee to green, ranking 8th in strokes gained, and he's finished 17th and 26th in 2 starts here during his career. He's due for a bounce-back.

Erik van Rooyen (+6600)

van Rooyen has not been good around the greens this season, which is holding him back from contending more, but he's 48th on tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green and 19th total. Before he missed the cut at the Players Championship, he finished 8th, 2nd and 25th in 3 consecutive tournaments.

Valero Texas Open picks ā€“ Long shots

Ryan moore (+10000).

Moore is quietly playing well right now, finishing 31st, 5th and 45th in his last 3 starts. Impressively, he's 12th in SG: tee-to-green, including 4th in approach, but his putting has been horrific (173rd). TPC San Antonio is more about ball striking than putting, which has helped him finish in the top 10 twice before, so he's a worthy long shot this week.

Matt Kuchar (+12500)

Kuchar has finished 3rd, 2nd, 12th and 7th in his last 4 starts at this tournament, an event he plays every year. Looking at his stats from this season gives you pause when it comes to betting him because he isn't playing well (6 missed cuts in 8 starts), but it's hard to ignore his recent finishes at TPC San Antonio.
