Last year, the Weeknd postponed his tour for the third time due to the pandemic . When explaining his reasons for doing so, the Weeknd promised the new version of the tour would be “something bigger and special for you which requires stadiums.”

Swedish House Mafia remixed “ Sacrifice ” for an “Alternate World” edition of the project, which also included the joint track “ Moth to a Flame ” and Agents of Time’s remix of “Take My Breath.”

The Weeknd has been a busy collaborator in recent months, as well, appearing on new tracks with FKA twigs , Post Malone , and Rosalía , plus a posthumous release from Aaliyah . He unveiled his new immersive television special, The Weeknd x The Dawn FM Experience , through Prime Video in February

The Weeknd Brings Global Stadium Tour to Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium: Review, Photos and Setlist

Abel Tesfaye’s stadium run continues through September

The Weeknd Brings Global Stadium Tour to Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium: Review, Photos and Setlist

The road to R&B superstar The Weeknd ’s 2022 “After Hours Til Dawn” tour (get tickets here ) has been a complicated one, to say the least. Initially conceived as an arena run in support of 2020’s blockbuster album After Hours , the shows were an early victim of the great pandemic postponement wave that shifted eyes to the following summer. Another series of delays, new dates and new considerations — including the January release of After Hours followup Dawn FM — finally pushed the shows to this summer, boasting a retooled name and a refreshed set of stadium-sized ambitions.

The arena-to-stadium leap is one reserved for a select few artists with the clout and commercial appeal to pull it off. Booking these behemoth structures and their 50,000-plus fan capacities — largely the domains of NFL football teams on this North American jaunt — is a statement move; an insistence that the average city-center arena would unacceptably constrain the spectacle of your show and the crowds clamoring for it.

Following a two-year sprint of chart-topping, engineering a Super Bowl halftime show and otherwise positioning himself as one of the biggest pop stars anywhere, one Abel Tesfaye deemed himself up for the challenge. Thursday night’s (July 21st) show at Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium sought to bring enough firepower to prove it.

The trappings of an elaborately art-directed show were evident from one glance around the floor. An enormous crimson moon floated at one end of a football-field-length catwalk, facing a 3D model of a crumbling cityscape at the other. Once a masked Tesfaye hit the stage, to the tune of After Hours opener “Alone Again,” a dazzling light show (occasionally synced to the LED wristbands distributed to the crowd) and a crew of thematically choreographed dancers resembling the Imperial Guard entered the mix. The columns of flames blasting up from the stage during degenerate anthem “The Hills” a few songs later could’ve given Metallica a run for their money.

AFTER HOURS TIL DAWn TOUR!

Canadian singer-songwriter and producer Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, represents the R&B new school - a new brand of pop-orientated hip hop that's characterized by a unique creative vision and a musicality so ambitious it would put Kanye to shame. This year sees The Weeknd hitting the road in support of his newest album, Dawn FM, and 2020's After Hours. Support will come from Doja Cat.

The Weeknd first released a few DIY mixtapes before finding him in the world's spotlight with his full-length debut Kiss Land in 2013. With a distinctive falsetto that glides swiftly and subtly over rolling synth-scapes punctuated with heavy, groovy bass lines, the charismatic muso recalls Michael Jackson in his prime.

A.Z. MADONNA

THE DYBBUK The quiet Vilna Shul on Beacon Hill has a real corker on its hands. “The Dybbuk,” a wondrous adaptation of the Russian playwright S. Ansky’s mystical signature work, gets a site-specific reworking at the hands of the Arlekin Players Theatre, the consistently inventive local theater group of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Khonen, a young, impoverished student, is in love with Leah, the daughter of Sender, a wealthy businessman and widower. Besides the fact that Sender has other plans for his daughter, there’s one more problem: Khonen is dead. At its heart, “The Dybbuk” is a forbidden love story as old as civilization. “I smash all barriers,” Khonen bellows more than once. As does this impressive production. Through June 30. At Vilna Shul, www.arlekinplayers.com

JAMES SULLIVAN

GATSBY This world premiere of the pre-Broadway musical, which is spending the summer at the American Repertory Theater, has already achieved supergroup status, thanks to the bevy of award-winning creatives involved. F. Scott’s Fitzgerald’s poignant tale of the illusory American Dream includes songs by Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine and Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Doveman) and a book by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok (“The Cost of Living”); Welch’s soulful pop is balanced by Majok’s clear-eyed view of the hurdles involved in chasing “success.” The creative team also boasts Tony Award-winners Rachel Chavkin (“Hadestown,” “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812″) directing, and Sonya Tayeh (” Moulin Rouge!” ), choreography . Through Aug. 3. Presented by the American Repertory Theater, Loeb Drama Center. https://americanrepertorytheater.org/shows-events/gatsby/

BETRAYAL Harbor Stage Company cofounders Brenda Withers and Jonathan Fielding take the stage as lovers, with William Zielinski as the third side of the relationship triangle. Theater cofounder Robert Kropf directs Harold Pinter’s masterpiece of layered emotions and memories, told in a reverse chronological order, giving the retelling a haunting and compelling power. June 13-July 6. A co-production of Wellfleet Harbor Actors’ Theatre and Harbor Stage Company. At Harbor Stage, Wellfleet. harborstage.org

BOSTON NEW WORKS FESTIVAL Moonbox celebrates its third annual festival, encompassing four mainstage productions and four readings of new works on six stages over four days, selected from a pool of 50 submissions. The festival features some familiar playwrights, including John Minigan, Rick Park, and Kira Rockwell, as well as some new faces, but all of the works are developed over the course of several months before they hit the stage. June 20-23. Presented by Moonbox Productions, at the Calderwood Pavilion and Boston Center for the Arts. https://moonboxproductions.org/event/boston-new-works-festival-2024/

NEXT TO NORMAL A soulful and stirring pop-rock musical by Tony Award winners Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt explores how one suburban family navigates grief, pain, love, and connection. Pascale Florestal adds a level of complexity by casting a non-white ensemble, expanding our notion of what “normal” looks like. Through June 30. A co-production of Central Square Theater and Front Porch Arts Collective, at Central Square Theatre. www.centralsquaretheater.org/shows/next-to-normal

KAREN CAMPBELL

ON CHRISTOPHER STREET: TRANSGENDER PORTRAITS BY MARK SELIGER Seliger, a renowned celebrity portrait photographer for magazines like Vanity Fair and GQ, ran a personal side project from 2013 to 2016, taking street portraits of people on Christopher Street in Manhattan’s West Village. A historic epicenter of the American gay rights movement, the neighborhood remains a hub of gay life in America (the Stonewall Inn, a bar that was the site of 1969 protests against police raids on gay clubs considered by many to be the foundation of the modern LGBTQ+ movement is at 53 Christopher). Seliger’s street portraits evolved into a larger documentary project about contemporary LGBTQ+ culture. This show will include 32 of those portraits, as well as a film and responses and exhibitions from the local LGBTQ+ community. Through Sept. 8. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, 25 Evans Way. 617-566-1401, www.gardnermuseum.org

GUILLAUME LETHIÈRE Though Lethière was as well regarded in 18th- and 19th-century France as his now-iconic peers like Jacques-Louis David, his renown has faded in the ensuing centuries to leave him all but forgotten. The Clark Art Institute, in partnership with the Louvre, revives Lethière’s remarkable story and re-situates it in context: The artist, whose father was a wealthy plantation owner in the French colony of Guadeloupe, and whose mother had been formerly enslaved there, moved to Paris as a teen and soon after shot to fame as a portraitist of the rich and famous. The exhibition revisits that work, but also his experience as a mixed-race Caribbean transplant in the upheavals of pre-Revolutionary France. Through Oct. 14. Clark Art Institute, 225 South St., Williamstown. 413-458-2303, www.clarkart.edu

HEW LOCKE: THE PROCESSION 140 life-size figures make up “The Procession,” British artist Hew Locke’s sprawling, carnival-esque installation commissioned by the Tate Britain in 2022. It lands at the ICA’s summer-seasonal Watershed to a site simpatico with the themes Locke explored in its original making: notions of colonialism and the inequities of global exchange between Europe and the Carribbean are as present right here as they are across the pond. Perched on the edge of Boston Harbor, a historic Colonial port with its own fraught histories of triangular trade and the movement of enslaved people, it fits seamlessly, though an ocean away. Through Sept. 2. ICA Watershed, 25 Harbor Shore Drive. 617-478-3100, www.icaboston.org

MURRAY WHYTE

DEBORAH EPSTEIN: NO WORDS Deborah Epstein is an architect, a weaver, and a printmaker. In this series of hand-manipulated screenprints, she tries to make sense of an attack she suffered at the hands of her ex-boyfriend 45 years ago, when she was 21. Reviewing the file of court documents and notes that her father, an attorney, kept on the subsequent case, “there are so many words,” she writes, “but none of them is mine.” In these prints, she uses documents from the past to reclaim her voice. Through July 7. Mercury Gallery, 20 Main St., Rockport. www.mercurygallery.com

CATE McQUAID

Deborah Epstein, "Facts" (detail), hand-colored, scratched silkscreen print with collage. Part of "No Words" at Rockport's Mercury Gallery.

JOSH ADAM MEYERS While he isn’t strictly a crowd-work guy, Meyers has an interesting approach to interaction. He will sometimes sing questions at his audience and ask them to sing the answers back. He had a psychiatrist sing back the top four drugs he prescribes to patients, and asked a waiter to croon about what he hates about customers. June 14, 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. $33. Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. 617-725-2844, www.laughboston.com

EMILY RUSKOWSKI The Boston comic says she loves the restaurants in Portland, Maine, but the “aggressive met hipsters” can be perplexing. “You go in, it’s like a bearded guy with sleeve tattoos who’s like, ‘We kill our own animals here every day!’” she says. “But he’s also wearing, like, a Ruth Bader Ginsburg T-shirt. What kinda person are you? He’s out back choking a goat, like, ‘Believe women!’” June 14-15, 8 p.m. $30. Off Cabot Comedy and Events, 9 Wallis St., Beverly. www.offcabot.org

HOMOERRATIC: A COMEDY SHOWCASE Headliner Sureni Weerasekera says it took her a long time to figure out she’s bisexual. Her first hook-ups were confusing because she was drinking. “Figured out I was an alcoholic before I was gay,” she says. “Then I started going on sober dates and I got even more confused. I was like, am I into women or empathy? Do I like boobs or just feeling understood?” With Kayla Carcone and Cam Ohh with host Zach Stewart. June 20, 8 p.m. $15. Club Café, 209 Columbus Ave. 617-536-0966, www.clubcafe.com

NICK A. ZAINO III
