You don't have to belong to any religious denomination in order to appreciate the beauty of the Cathedral of St. Mary in St. Cloud. The parish was founded in 1855 and a combination church and school was erected. By 1864, a Gothic-style church was built, but in 1920, it burned to the ground.

The current church was designed and constructed shortly after and was completed in the 1930s in a style similar to a basilica in Ravenna, Italy. A renovation happened in 1980, and the pipe organ was installed in 1984.

Inside the church is something called the Shrine of Saint Cloud, which includes several relics that relate to the history of the city, like a bone fragment from Saint Cloud himself (allegedly), a piece of his clothing, and a replica of a 17th-century statue of the saint.

People are friendly, the food is delicious, and there are enough attractions to merit a three-day weekend or longer stay.

From kayaking the Mississippi River to watching some of the best college hockey in the country, Saint Cloud offers a wide range of fun activities. Here are just a few great things to do in the area.

1. Explore The Quarry Park And Nature Preserve

Saint Cloud was once home to a number of granite quarries, and its red granite was popular for homes and public buildings. The Hundred Acres Quarry operated in the area from the early 1860s until the mid-1950s. In 1992, Stearns County purchased the site and transformed it into the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve .

Today, visitors enjoy nearly 700 acres of hiking trails featuring oak and aspen trees and wetlands full of wildlife, including deer and great horned owls. The quarry pits offer swimming holes for area residents as well as dynamic views with reflections of the stones in the dark water. Artifacts and old equipment are located throughout the park, so you’ll get a dose of history along with some good exercise.

2. Learn About The Area’s History At The Stearns History Museum

At the Stearns History Museum , you can learn about the area’s history through exhibits on everything from the evolution of nature to the history of toys. You’ll also learn about the role prominent families have played in the development of Saint Cloud. 4. Stop To Smell The Roses At The Munsinger And Clemens Gardens

Hugging the shoreline of the Mississippi River, the Munsinger and Clemens Gardens provide a beautiful spot to enjoy a walk, take in the views, and smell the roses. The area actually consists of two separate botanical gardens.

Opened in the 1930s, Munsinger Garden features 14 acres of flower paths underneath scores of pine trees. Munsinger is also recognized for its well-groomed grass and flower island beds that reflect the shape of the nearby river.

The 7-acre Clemens Garden was founded in the 1990s and is located on a hilltop overlooking Munsinger Garden. With smaller gardens including roses and perennials, Clemens also features a series of water fountains and ironworks displays.

During the summer months, the gardens host a series of outdoor concerts featuring local musicians.

5. Catch A Show Downtown

Offering outstanding community theater and concerts, the Paramount Center for the Arts is a throwback to the days when people flocked to downtown theaters to catch Vaudeville acts, silent movies, or other performances. Today, the Paramount remains the place to go to enjoy community theater performances. The theater also hosts live concerts, primarily starring local or regional musical acts. As a community arts center, the Paramount offers workshops and classes on a variety of subjects, including painting and pottery.

Originally opened as an Elks Lodge in 1913, Pioneer Place on Fifth is now an intimate setting for concerts, typically tributes to performers such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Janis Joplin; Queen; and the Carpenters.

6. Stroll Through Lake George Park

Located a short walk from downtown Saint Cloud, Lake George Park offers a variety of activities, from hiking to paddleboarding to kayaking. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy a nice meal under the shade of the trees. A veterans memorial near the lake pays tribute to the men and women who have served in the military.

Running 5 miles from Saint Cloud State University to downtown, the Beaver Island Trail features views of the Mississippi River from a paved trail through wooded areas. During your walk, you may see some of the area’s wildlife.

Traveling through River Bluffs Regional Park, the trail eventually leads to the Saint Cloud River Walk, a half-mile trail near the River’s Edge Convention Center. While on the river walk, stop at the giant picture frame for a fun photo to remember your visit to the area by.

8. Watch A Huskies Game

If you visit during the college hockey season, you can watch Saint Cloud State’s men’s and women’s teams take on some of the best teams in the country. At the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center , the teams compete as members of the best leagues in college hockey — the men in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and the women in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association .

The Huskies have been the top-ranked team in men’s hockey in recent seasons, while the women continue to build their program. Several former players have gone on to play in the National Hockey League, and Saint Cloud State has become a popular team for players who dream of playing professionally. On the women’s side, the Huskies have produced Olympians for both the United States and Canada.

9. Visit Saint John’s University

Home to one of the world’s largest stained glass windows, Saint John’s University in nearby Collegeville, Minnesota, provides an opportunity to take in beautiful scenery while exploring cultural and religious attractions. The stained glass window at Saint John’s Abbey Church stands about 65 feet tall and stretches almost 200 feet wide. As you stand inside the church viewing the stained glass, you’ll notice the size and beauty of each pane. The nearly 50-year-old concrete church is designed in a semicircular fashion and seats up to 1,500 people.

Standing in front of the windows, the bell tower is more than 100 feet tall and can be seen for miles. As the bells sound, they create music to your ears.

A short walk from the church is the Saint John’s Bible Gallery . It’s home to the Saint John’s Bible, which features beautiful calligraphy and illustrations completed over a 10-year period beginning in the late 1990s. The exhibit includes folios of the Saint John’s Bible as well as other Bibles from around the world. The museum also features Bible-related artifacts and artwork.

10. Enjoy A Cold One At A Local Brewery

A hop, skip, and a jump from the Mississippi River in downtown Saint Cloud, Beaver Island Brewing Company produces great-tasting craft beer. Once a home-brewing operation, Beaver Island still produces its beer on-site. As you sample a flight of core and seasonal drinks from a serving tray that resembles a canoe oar, you can watch the brewmasters at work. Beaver Island also sells cans for home enjoyment.

Next door to Saint Cloud in Saint Joseph, Minnesota, Bad Habit Brewing Company also features locally brewed beer. From ale to dark beer, there’s something for everyone on tap. Bad Habit also makes its own soda.

Saint Cloud’s culinary scene is second to none. With its outstanding restaurants that rival those in the Twin Cities , you could spend your entire visit sampling the local cuisine.

The Pickled Loon will delight your taste buds with its fried Brussels sprouts tossed in a housemade maple honey sauce and topped with sliced almonds. You may want to skip the entrees and just keep ordering more Brussels sprouts, but you’d be depriving yourself of even more amazing tastes. From the sriracha barbecue meatloaf to the fish tacos, you’d swear you were dining at a high-end eatery in the Twin Cities instead of a bar and grill in downtown Saint Cloud.

The restaurant’s decor resembles that of a lodge (it’s actually in a log cabin and is located next to the Sauk River, which you can view during your meal). You can enjoy its famous oversized popovers as bread with your meal (try the honey butter on a warm slice) or as an entree. The menu also features items such as maple-glazed roast duck, fresh fish, and steaks, and the portions are huge and filling.

For a truly impeccable breakfast, head to the Nelson Brothers Restaurant inside the Clearwater Travel Plaza. Not many people would recommend a truck stop for a dining experience, but after one visit to the travel plaza, you’ll be a fan. With a bakery recognized for its head-sized pastries, the restaurant offers a menu with sizable portions. From pancakes that cover the plate to omelets that run the length of a dish, breakfast at Nelson Brothers needs to be on your Saint Cloud bucket list.

In this nature preserve, you can also cross-country ski and rock climb in designated areas. Whatever you decide to do, you’ll gaze upon incredible plant life all throughout the area!

2. Beaver Island Trail

While St. Cloud is known for its granite quarries, you might’ve gathered from the previous section that the city also has tons of nature to offer. For this reason, you might be excited about the choices you’ll have to get out there and explore.

You should consider going on a brisk walk along  Beaver Island Trail . It actually runs across former railroad routes for the Northwestern Railway Company.

You’ll have 2 choices for your walk. You can either take the shorter route that goes behind the St. Cloud River’s Edge Convention Center or the longer one (5 miles) that starts near St. Cloud State University campus and takes you along the Mississippi River.

3. Munsinger and Clemens Gardens

Built in the 1930s, this 21-acre garden first started as just Munsinger Gardens, which spanned 14 acres. Then, in the 1980s, the 7-acre Clemens Gardens was added while the grounds were refurbished.

In the  Munsinger and Clemens Gardens , you’ll get to see beautiful flowers, shrubs, and trees. The gardens are located right next to the Mississippi River, so you’ll get a fantastic view as you stroll through.

Make sure you visit the Perennial Garden and Virginia Clemens Rose Garden, which have some amazing sights to behold, including a stunning pre-Civil War-era cast-iron fountain and various blooming roses.

4. Stearns History Museum

Whether you’re considering moving to the local area or you just love history, the  Stearns History Museum  is a worthwhile visit.

This museum was founded in 1936 by the Stearns County Historical Society but didn’t actually become a museum until 1972. You’ll find it located in an outdoor nature park where you can enjoy yourself across 80 acres. There are floral gardens, many walking trails for people of all fitness levels, and even a skateboard park if you’ve got little ones who want to get some practice in!

Otherwise, inside the Stearns History Museum, you’ll get to see various exhibits that tell St. Cloud’s tale. There are 2 floors where you can see permanent exhibits, as well as some temporary ones that come through.

5. Paramount Center for the Arts

This  Performing Arts Center   is located in the renovated historic Paramount Theatre. If you’d like to catch a performance or two while in St. Cloud, then this is the place to be.

Not only can you enjoy comedy acts and theatrical performances, but you can also view many works of art inside this space. Roam through the Theater Lobby Gallery, Studio C Gallery, and the meeting space to see some breathtaking art. There’s also an auxiliary exhibition space that’s nearby in Gallery St. Germain.

If you’re sticking around for longer, you should consider trying out some public art courses that the studios have on sometimes.

6. Pioneer Place on Fifth

This is another performing arts space in St. Cloud, so it’s another place to put on your to-go list if you’re an arts and music fan. You’ll get to enjoy performances put on by local musicians and bands!

The building was first built in 1913 and used as an Elks Club facility. If you look closely, you’ll still see some of the original features on the building for the Elks.

When you’re inside, you’ll want to check out the urinals (if you’re a guy). This building is home to one of the top historic urinals, as it’s a turn-of-the-century porcelain floor urinal!

Pioneer Place on Fifth   also has many free community music events, so you don’t always have to spend money to indulge yourself here.

7. Crossroads Center

Do you love to shop? Then you’ve got to visit  Crossroads Center ! This is actually the largest mall you’ll find in the state outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

The anchor stores you’ll find here are Sears, Target, Macy’s, JCPenney, and Scheels All Sports. You’ll also find other shopping favorites like Victoria’s Secret, H&M, American Eagle Outfitters, Bath and Body Works, and Payless ShoeSource.

If you get hungry while shopping, not to worry, as there are many fast food options, as well as full-service restaurants.

8. Joe Faber Field

Joe Faber Field  is part of the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) and was built in 1998. It seats over 2,000 people and is home to the St. Cloud Rox.

Here, you’ll find full-service concession stands, but that’s not all! In fact, there’s an all-you-can-eat (and drink!) sports deck, which you can visit 1 hour before the game starts.

If you’ve got kids under 14, consider bringing them on a Sunday, as they’ll be invited to run the bases!

When the field isn’t in use for baseball games, there are many events hosted here. So make sure to visit for the annual CiderFest!

9. Old Capital Tavern

Need to rest up and refuel after doing all these activities? Then head over to  Old Capital Tavern  (which is technically in Sauk Rapids, which is perfect if you’re looking for things to do near St. Cloud, MN).

Why’s it called this? Well, the story goes that Sauk Rapids was set to become the capital of the state, until a tornado destroyed it in 1884.

Here, you’ll get to chow down on pub food done up in a contemporary way. Not just that, but you’ll quench your thirst on various craft beers, whiskeys, bourbons, and scotches. 

10. Ultimate Sports Bar and Grill

Looking for another place to rest up, but want to catch up with some games? Then you need to go to  Ultimate Sports Bar and Grill !

They have an impressive 75 widescreen TVs where you can watch any sports game you want, whether it’s college or pro. You’ll also get tabletop speakers so you can hear every detail of the game.

Satiate your hunger by biting into the best wings in town, or wraps, burgers, salads, etc.

Not only does this bar and grill have 16 beers on tap, but you can order the “smaller” 16 or 25 oz mugs or you can go big with beer pitchers, 88 oz tower dispensers with taps, or the 240 oz bladder buster!

11. Territory Golf Club

For those of you who’d like to visit golf courses all around the world, you won’t want to miss out on  Territory Golf Club . It’s a public golf course, but it’s so well maintained that you’d think it’s a private club!

You’ll get to tee off in some beautiful settings where you’ll see natural wetlands and a river, as well as water features and different elevation changes throughout the course.

While locals can buy season passes, you’ll be pleased to know that Territory Golf Club is a daily-fee club, so you can pay by the day.

12. Coyote Moon Grille

While you’re at Territory Golf Club, why not head over to  Coyote Moon Grille ? It’s a wonderful place to have dinner after you’ve played the whole course. You can also have lunch if you visit between April and September.

This restaurant overlooks the course, which gives you a fantastic view of the whole green. But the course isn’t the only impressive thing you’ll see; Coyote Moon Grille is inside a 12,000 square foot lodge!

The food here is good too. And if you want to host an event here, you sure can with the 2 private rental rooms and large banquet hall.

13. Downtown

Some of the fun things to do in St. Cloud, MN are located right in its heart.  Downtown St. Cloud   is home to many boutiques and is very close to the Paramount Center for the Arts, which means you can cram these 2 activities together if you want.

No matter what time of year, you will enjoy a road trip to St Cloud, Minnesota! You’ll find plenty of breweries, dive bars, and restaurants. plus trails and places to get outside at spots like Quarry Park and Munsinger Gardens. This city offers a fun experience from sun-up to sun-down!

Located in central Minnesota, it is easily accessible for most Minnesotans in a couple of hours’ drive. And once you get there you will be surrounded by rich history, culture, and good times.

How Far is St Cloud from Minneapolis?

St Cloud, Minnesota is 1 hour and 15 minutes from Minneapolis (65 miles.) The quickest way to get there is via I-94 West through Maple Grove, Rogers, and Monticello. The short distance makes it perfect for a weekend, or even day trip, within Minnesota.

What is St Cloud, Minnesota known for?

St Cloud, Minnesota is known for its granite quarries which have been around since 1868—another name for the town is “Granite City.” Aside from history, it’s known for things like college hockey and Val’s (more on these below!) But first, let’s get started on…

1. Quarry Park & Nature Preserve in St Cloud, Minnesota

Is this really in St Cloud, Minnesota? Quarry Park is 684 acres of gorgeous scenery that includes 18 quarries, prairies, woodlands, wetlands, and trails. The beautiful blue (and green!) waters pop from the quarries and nature lovers can’t get enough.

It is one of the more popular places in St. Cloud and for good reason. Open for swimming in the summer months (Quarry #2 and Quarry #11), it’s the perfect destination for families (#11) and those seeking cliff-diving adventures (#2.)

That’s not all though; there are a ton of options when it comes to outdoor activities at Quarry Park & Nature Preserve. Scuba dive, rock climb, fish, bike, or take advantage of the well-kept hiking and walking trails. Bring some food to enjoy at the picnic tables and make a full day out of it. There are plenty of fun things to do!

Not only should you take advantage of summer here, but visit during the spring when warm weather returns, fall for the change of color, and winter for snowy views and cross country skiing.

2. Munsinger Clemens Gardens in St Cloud, Minnesota

Let’s keep it going with beautiful outdoor spaces. Munsinger Clemens Gardens is one of the most unique things to take advantage of while visiting St. Cloud. Gorgeous, European-style gardens and green spaces to walk around and enjoy. (Come in the morning with your coffee and it’s the most peaceful way to start your day!)

Munsinger Gardens is located right on the Mississippi River. Look to one side for blue waters amongst the trees and the other for a beautifully crafted perennial garden. Plus, just across the street is Clemens Gardens where you’ll find brick paths leading through the flowers, fountains, and statues—picture above.

Put this place near the top of your list when you visit St. Cloud. It is full of beauty !

3. Beaver Island Trail in St Cloud, Minnesota

Beaver Island Trail is a 5.1-mile paved path that goes from St. Cloud State University to River Bluffs Regional Park. “Beaver Island” comes from the 20 islands along your walk that were once full of beaver dams. Here you can admire the Mississippi River, forests, and natural settings that the area offers. And you’ll also cross the St. Cloud Riverwalk, just .5 miles and a great spot for a classic St. Cloud photo!

4. Lake George Park in St Cloud, Minnesota

Cost: $0 – free (rentals: $6 per half hour; $8 per hour.) .

The outdoor adventure in St Cloud, Minnesota doesn’t stop there! Visit Lake George Park , located right near the downtown area. Rent kayaks or paddleboards to get out on the water , enjoy some food at one of their picnic areas, or just walk along the path and take in the views. This spot is perfect for families and kids of all ages.

Also, visit in the summer and you’ll be in luck to hear live music and be a part of the Middletown Market that includes food trucks and other fun events and vendors.

Breweries in St Cloud, Minnesota

Ready for more outdoor adventure? This time, we’ll add beer! St. Cloud offers a few different breweries with outdoor spaces perfect for enjoying the fresh air and sippin’ a craft beer.

5. Pantown Brewing Company

Cost: $15 for 2 beers (16 oz.).

Pantown Brewing Company is my favorite brewery I have ever been to—no joke! As a light beer drinker, even I can rave about the good brews at this place. The Cream Ale was light and smooth with a tasty flavor that didn’t have a bite to it (you know what I mean!) And the Oktoberfest was the perfect fall beer that’s easy to drink.

It’s definitely one of the hot spots in St. Cloud—for both craft beer conessuiers and light beer drinkers!

And aside from the beer, they set the atmosphere up just right. Visit while it’s Food Truck Friday and enjoy the string-lit outdoor patio surrounded by trees. If it’s too cold, head inside to find a table and listen to live local musicians.

6. Beaver Island Brewing Co.

Cost: $7 for 1 beer (16 oz.).

Another fun spot in the area is Beaver Island Brewing Co . They offer a high-ceilinged, bright indoor space as well as an outdoor patio (where your dogs are welcome.) This spot started as at-home brews and grew into its own location with a great community atmosphere—and they still brew their beer on-site!

Go with a beer flight to try a range of IPAs, milk stouts, and ales; it comes on what looks like a canoe oar. Or pick your favorite—I went with the seasonal Oktoberfest and if it’s brewed while you are there, definitely give it a try!

7. Back Shed Brewing Company

St. Cloud is the perfect location for a little afternoon into evening brewery hop. Add in Back Shed Brewing Company for the full trifecta! This spot has an outdoor patio (with heaters when the temperatures cool down!) where your dogs are welcome, snacks and food trucks (as often as possible), games, and, of course, craft beer!

Stop in for something simple like the “Blonde, James Blonde” Blonde Ale. Or get a little fancier with “La Di Da Di – Strawberry/Pineapple Sour” or “Stompin’ Daisies,” which is an IPA.

8. The Ultimate Sports Bar in St Cloud, Minnesota

Cost: ($) standard sports bar pricing + great specials.

My goal is to always find a fun sports bar in every area I visit. And let me tell you, I may have found the best one in the state of Minnesota. As the name states, this place really is “The Ultimate Sports Bar.”

Ultimate Sports Bar & Grill has a million TVs (okay, 75), open-air + outdoor patio (with firepits), fun drinks like frozen margaritas and beer tubes, games and axe throwing, and happy, friendly staff. They even have outlets right underneath the bar when your phone is about to die (clutch!)

Football season is the perfect time of year to visit; you are guaranteed to have a good time.

Their menu is full of traditional, American pub fare and both the Margherita flatbreads and dry rub wings hit the spot! And check out those awesome football beer glasses!?

TIP: If the game you are watching isn’t what they have on the sound, ask about the tabletop speakers that allow you to listen to your game quietly enough that others don’t hear it! SO COOL—it is in the top picture.

9. Brick & Bourbon in St Cloud, Minnesota

Cost: ($$) standard upscale american restaurant/bar.

Looking for a great place to eat with good food in a more upscale setting? Visit Brick and Bourbon , located right downtown on 2nd and 5th. Known for its (you guessed it) bourbon, grab a flight to try a variety. Or stick with one of their craft beers on tap. If you’re into stouts, get the Peanut Butter Milk Stout by Belching Beaver—I absolutely LOVED it. From the first smell, I was hooked.

Dark wood interior, barrels, and lights bring the ambiance together and I recommend a seat at the bar. For food, you cannot (cannot!) pass up on the Buffalo Brussels Sprouts. They are cooked to perfection and full of flavor. Their menu also includes additional apps (dry rub wings with a side of buffalo are solid) plus burgers, mac & cheese, and more.

10. Catch a Game in St Cloud, Minnesota

Cost: varies.

• Herb Brooks National Hockey Center : Watch one of Minnesota’s best hockey teams which is home to the St. Cloud State Huskies. Both the men and women’s teams play here.
• Joe Faber Field : Catch a baseball game played by the St. Cloud Rox team or St. Cloud State University.
• SCSC also has Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Softball and more.

11. Val’s in St Cloud, Minnesota

Cost: burgers are less than $5, milkshakes for under $3.

Val’s Rapid Serv has been in St. Cloud for over 50 years and is the best place to grab classic burgers and milkshakes. This tiny, 490 square foot old school shop is a popular spot for both locals and those who make their annual stop for a bacon double cheeseburger. It’s take-out only with curbside pick-up so make sure you make this quick stop when you are in town!

Where to Stay in St Cloud Minnesota: MN Hotels

12. country inn & suites – east, cost: $135 per night (including tax & fees).

The Country Inn & Suites on the east side of St. Cloud Minnesota is in a great location. Only 4 minutes from downtown, 5 from Munsinger Clemens Gardens, and 15 from Quarry Park—and a few steps from Val’s!

The hotel rooms are clean with comfortable beds, a TV, and a coffee maker. Plus, there is a continental breakfast (actually really good with eggs, sausages, waffles, etc.) included in your stay.

Note: I was here in September 2021 and there are plans in the works for soon-to-be renovations to make it an even more comfortable stay!

The Best Things to Do in St Cloud , Minnesota

The city of St. Cloud is a fun place to visit with plenty of things to do and see! It’s a community of about 68.5k (not a small town for central Minnesota!) and they all keep their spaces clean, welcome new people, and enjoy where they live. 11 Great Things To Do in St. Cloud Minnesota

One of the absolute best day trips in Minnesota is to the greater St. Cloud area. At just over one hour from the Twin Cities, you can really make the most of a day without spending too much time in the car. Even better would be to stay overnight, however, to enjoy your adventure at a leisurely pace. Read on for 11 great things to do in St. Cloud!

Where to Stay: Sable Inn B&B

Sable Inn B&B is a beautifully restored home from 1901. Set on its own private lake where you can fish or paddle in the summer or ice skate on in the winter, the inn is a true respite. There are even groomed cross-country trails in the winter! The rooms are so quaint with historic details and you could easily spend time just relaxing on the wrap around porch. It’s just a 15 min drive from downtown St. Cloud.

1. Grab Smoothie Bowls from Cloud 9 Energy Bowls

If you’re looking for a healthy treat, stop by Cloud 9 Energy Bowls for a delicious superfood meal. We stopped here for a late breakfast and it powered us through a morning yoga session. There’s a fun vibe inside the shop or take it to go like we did.

2. Visit Milk & Honey Ciders

Recently ranked the top cidery in the US by USA TODAY, Milk & Honey is a true gem in Minnesota. In addition to great cider, check out events like yoga and live music on their calendar. Don’t miss this stop on things to do in St. Cloud!

3. Bike the Wobegon Trail

One of the most beautiful paved trails in Minnesota is the Wobegon Trail . The trail goes in to the country in between beautiful fields, rolling hills, lakes and rivers. It’s also a relatively flat path which makes the ride enjoyable in both directions. There’s even a beautiful covered bridge if you bike all the way out to Holdingford. If you don’t have a bike or can’t bring it with you, there are some rentals available at the trailhead in St. Joseph.

4. Grab Sandwiches from Bo Diddley’s

A classic deli from the 1980’s is Bo Diddley’s . The subs are generously sized and the bread is soft and fresh. Pair it with chips and a drink and you have the perfect lunch to either eat on site or take to go for a picnic.

5. Sit on the Patio at Bad Habits Brewing

A really fun brewery in town is Bad Habits . They have fun flavors amongst the classics and also serve a hard seltzer and sodas. The patio is a great space with picnic tables and lawn games and you’re able to bring outside food there too.

6. Enjoy Ice Cream from Jupiter Moon

A delicious ice cream stop is Jupiter Moon . They have unique flavors like cherry vanilla cola and great spaces (indoors and out) to enjoy your treat! This spot is also part of Explore Minnesota’s MNScoop program !

7. Have a Picnic at Munsinger Clemens Gardens

One of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, gardens in Minnesota is Munsinger Clemens. It’s the perfect spot to walk around, sit and meditate or enjoy a picnic. It’s set along the river so the water views are a great backdrop.

8. Eat Dinner at Star of India

A delicious and authentic Indian restaurant in town is Star of India . We picked it up to have a picnic in the Munsinger Clemens Gardens. If we lived closer, we would frequent this spot – the food was so good.

9. Enjoy Bubble Tea at Spice of Life

The Spice of Life Tea Shop is a true gem in St. Cloud. Whether you love tea like I do or enjoy coffee more, this shop has you covered. There are tons of unique choices. I’m always happy to grab a boba tea so that was my pick while Ryan enjoyed a mocha coffee. Next time I want to try the matcha smoothie.

10. Shop the Local Boutiques

The Greater St. Cloud area has so many cute boutiques. A few to add to your list are Copper Pony , Green Thumb Etc . and the newly opened Hudson & Company in St. Joseph which had British shop vibes that I loved.

11. Hike at the Quarries

A beautiful and unique spot in St. Cloud is definitely Quarry Park & Nature Preserve . It’s a popular place to swim and hike as the water that’s filled in the quarries is a stunning turquoise color. Just make sure to go early as it gets crowded.

Best Places to Visit in St. Cloud, Minnesota: A Comprehensive Guide

St. Cloud, Minnesota, is a charming city located in the heart of the state. With a rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty, it’s no wonder that St. Cloud is a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. Whether you’re interested in exploring the great outdoors, learning about the area’s history and culture, or simply relaxing and enjoying the local cuisine, St. Cloud has something for everyone.

Having lived near St. Cloud most of my life, I know it well and love revisiting my favorite nooks and crannies, so I thought I would share the list of favorites with you.

Favorite destinations include downtown St. Cloud including the riverwalk and Paramount Theater, Munsinger and Clemens Gardens, St. Cloud State University (my alma mater), St. Cloud Quarry Park and Nature Preserve which I have only been to twice and can’t wait to go back to, and the Stearns County History Museum, to which we are members and visit often.   I could add lots more great destinations to the list, like the Edge Convention Center, Beaver Island Trail, Lake George, Great River Regional Library, or even individual shops and establishments, but I have to cut this off somewhere, so I will leave those for another time.

Best Places to Visit in Downtown St. Cloud

Downtown St. Cloud is the heart of the city and a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience. The area is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cultural landmarks. Here are a few highlights:

St. Cloud Riverwalk

The St. Cloud Riverwalk is a beautiful and scenic pathway that runs along the Mississippi River. It’s a great place to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river. The Riverwalk also connects to several parks, including Hester Park and Wilson Park, which offer picnic areas, playgrounds, and other recreational activities.

Paramount Theater and Visual Arts Center

Munsinger Gardens and Clemens Gardens

One of the top attractions in St. Cloud, and one of my personal favorites, is the Munsinger and Clemens Gardens. These beautiful gardens are located on the banks of the Mississippi River and are home to a wide variety of plants and flowers. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, enjoy a picnic on the riverbank, or attend one of the many concerts and events that are held here throughout the year.

If you’re looking for a beautiful and peaceful place to relax in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Munsinger Gardens and Clemens Gardens are a must-visit. These two adjacent gardens are located along the Mississippi River, offering a stunning view of the water and surrounding landscape.

Munsinger Gardens

Munsinger Gardens is a 14-acre garden that features a wide variety of plants and flowers, including perennials, annuals, and roses. The garden is designed in a cottage style, with winding paths that lead you through different sections of the garden. You’ll find plenty of benches and seating areas throughout the garden, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Clemens Gardens

Clemens Gardens, on the other hand, is a formal garden that features a more structured design. The garden is divided into several sections, including a rose garden, a fountain garden, and a perennial garden. You’ll find plenty of beautiful flowers and plants here, as well as a gazebo and several sculptures.

St. Cloud State University

St. Cloud State University is a public university located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. It is the largest university in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, with a student population of over 10,000. The university offers over 200 undergraduate and graduate major and minor programs available, including business, education, engineering, and the liberal arts.

St. Cloud State Overview

St. Cloud State University is known for its strong commitment to student success. The university provides a wide range of academic support services, including tutoring, academic advising, and career services. The campus also offers many extracurricular activities, such as clubs, sports, and cultural events, to enrich student life.

One of the university’s notable features is its beautiful campus. The campus is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River and features many green spaces, gardens, and historic buildings. Students can take a stroll through the campus and enjoy the scenery or take a guided tour to learn more about the university’s history and architecture.

My Grandpa Built Part of St. Cloud State University

I may be slightly biased having graduated from St. Cloud State University, but I enjoy visiting the campus.  Interestingly, my grandpa even helped build one of the dorms, one my husband actually lived in as a student.  It was built long before safety standards were in place to protect workers.  Grandpa was nervous that the hole they dug for the foundation was unsafe and he told his boss his concerns and his ideas to improve the safety of the situation.  His boss fired him on the spot.  As grandpa told it, shortly after that the hole did cave in.  Having heard that, Grandpa packed his lunch box and went back to work.  His boss gave a nod but never said a thing.  Grandpa was back on the job.       

St. Cloud State Summary

Overall, St. Cloud State University is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in higher education, history, or beautiful architecture. Whether you’re a student, a history buff, or just looking for a peaceful place to relax, the university has something to offer.

St. Cloud Quarry Park and Nature Preserve

St. Cloud Quarry Park and Nature Preserve is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. With miles of trails, visitors can explore a variety of scenic natural areas, from woodlands and open prairie to wetlands and unquarried bedrock areas. The park is also the largest in the Stearns County Parks system, making it a great place to spend a day or even a weekend.

An Old Granite Quarry

One of the unique features of the park is the remnants of a historic granite quarry that operated from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Visitors can see the old quarry site, which has been transformed into a stunning swimming hole with crystal clear water.  Be careful though, because it is a quarry the water is extremely deep.  

Having grown up in the area, while in college I toured one of the granite quarries that was in operation at the time.  This was fascinating to me.  I actually interned for the City of Waite Park and was part of some of the early conversations about what to do related to reclaiming the old quarry sites.  Once the granite is removed, there are huge holes left behind where the granite was removed.  Often times they are filled in with water and turned into a park. 

Lake George, located in downtown St. Cloud is another abandoned and reclaimed granite quarry with similarly very deep water, although no one swims there.    

Shortly after the St. Cloud Quarry Park and Nature Preserve opened, there was a community event that had quite a few spots to stop and do activities and visit with naturalists.  This was a great way to get acclimated to the park.  

For those who love hiking, Quarry Park and Nature Preserve has over 20 miles of trails to explore. The trails vary in difficulty, so visitors of all skill levels can find a trail that suits them. Some of the popular trails include the Quarry Loop Trail, which takes visitors around the old granite quarry and offers stunning views of the water, and the Prairie Trail, which winds through beautiful open prairie.

Other Outdoor Activities

In addition to hiking, visitors can also enjoy other outdoor activities such as fishing, rock climbing, and bird watching. The park is home to a variety of bird species, including bald eagles and ospreys, making it a great place for bird watchers to spot some rare species.  

The park also has several picnic areas and a playground for families to enjoy.  It is a great place to get outdoors and explore nature.

St. Cloud Quarry Park and Nature Preserve Summary

Stearns County History Museum

And another favorite site, if you’re interested in history, is the Stearns County History Museum. We are members and love going often.  This museum is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the St. Cloud area, and features exhibits on everything from the region’s Native American heritage to its role in the Civil War. With interactive exhibits, educational programs, and a wide range of artifacts and documents, the Stearns History Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of St. Cloud and the surrounding area.

Central Minnesota History

The Stearns County History Museum is a must-visit for history buffs and anyone interested in learning about the rich history of Central Minnesota. The museum is located in Saint Cloud and offers visitors a chance to explore the diverse history of Stearns County, from the landscape and geology to the people who have shaped the area.

The museum has an impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits that showcase the history of the region. Visitors can learn about the Native American tribes that lived in the area, the early settlers who came to the region, and the industries that have played a significant role in the development of Central Minnesota.

One of the highlights of the museum is the exhibit on the granite industry, which was a major industry in the area for many years. The exhibit features a scale model of a granite quarry, as well as tools and equipment used in the industry.

Kid-Friendly Musuem

The museum has a winding path to follow so you see everything in order. My kids especially like the first exhibit room which is a Minnesota nature scene. They also like that there are often “treasure hunts” which are essentially an opportunity to find a list of things and cross them off your list when you find them. When you complete it and bring it back to the main desk you get to pick a prize. I love that they find ways to make history fun for kids.

Special Programs

The Stearns County History Museum also hosts a variety of events and programs throughout the year, including lectures, workshops, and special exhibits. We especially love their annual World War II history day as it has lots of ways to interact with costumed soldiers re-enacting the stories, drama, and experiences of those days.

Today we’re taking a virtual vacation to the beautiful midwestern city of St. Cloud Minnesota. Your host is Kristen, a Minnesota local who shares her adventures over at Expedition Kristen . While St. Cloud is the largest population center in the central region of Minnesota with 68,000 people, it still manages to embrace a great small-town vibe.

Take a Trip to Granite City

There are so many great things to do in St. Cloud, Minnesota and it’s a really easy day trip from the Twin Cities. Just over one hour from downtown Minneapolis, this unassuming town offers some really unique things to do, many of which are super cheap or completely free. St. Cloud is often called Granite City due to several large granite quarries founded in the late 1800s. Taking a day trip or weekend getaway to St. Cloud is an incredible way to spend time with friends and family.

When I first moved to Minnesota in 2011, I was living in St. Cloud. It’s a very underrated town and there is much more to do than meets the eye. I lived in St. Cloud for a year with my husband, Nic and it was really fun to go back in September of this year. We took a trip down memory lane and visited our first apartment together, and some of the bars and parks we used to frequent. Read on for my favorite ways to experience both the hot spots and hidden gems in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Play a Fun Game During Your Visit to St. Cloud

Explore Minnesota made a Road Trip’n Bingo board game for each region of Minnesota. Visit St. Cloud used the central Minnesota board and personalized it with specific sites around St. Cloud, which we played throughout the day. It was super fun and we did pretty well! Grab Lunch in Historic Downtown St. Cloud

The downtown area is pretty large and there are a lot of great restaurants to choose from. There are Mexican and Thai restaurants, great burger spots, and a lot of tap houses and grills. We used to really appreciate the great variety of options when we lived in St. Cloud, especially for a smaller town.

We love Jules’ Bistro, which has a huge selection of paninis, wraps, salads, soups, and pizzas. I had the turkey pesto panini and Nic had ham and cheese. The bread was warm and the cheese was melting perfectly, and the chips had the perfect amount of crunch.

When we visited in September 2020, the COVID pandemic was a concern. We chose to sit inside because there was plenty of space in between us and the few other people sitting inside. Masks were required when walking around the restaurant and we used a QR code for the menu. All the employees had masks and gloves on too. We felt really safe the whole time. If you are more comfortable, there is an outdoor patio.

Walk Around Lake George

When we lived in St. Cloud, I used to walk around Lake George almost daily. It’s a beautiful area with a paved path that goes around the whole lake. In the summer there is an area to rent canoes and paddleboats. There is also a small sandy beach and a huge grassy area with a playground on it for kids.

Look for Cool Art Around Town

There are so many cool sculptures spread all around town. We also saw a ton of beautiful murals! They are scattered all over downtown St. Cloud so keep an eye out for them as you walk around.

Visit a Brewery and Cidery

St. Cloud has a great selection of breweries and cideries in town and the surrounding area. We stopped by Beaver Island Brewing , which has a huge variety of beers to choose from! I always prefer a flight when checking out a new brewery so that I can try a variety of beers.

Every Wednesday Beaver Island Brewery has an event called Tending for a Cause .  $1 from each pint sale and all tips are donated to local nonprofits. Since the program’s inception in 2017, they have been able to donate over $65,000 to local charities. If you’re in St. Cloud on a Wednesday, be sure to stop by and let your money go to a really great cause!

The Munsinger Gardens and Clemens Gardens are two separate yet adjacent gardens that run along the Mississippi River. This is a must-see spot. It’s my number one favorite place in St. Cloud and I used to read and relax in these gardens often when I lived there.

The Munsinger Gardens first began in the 1930s. They consist of 14 acres of winding flower-bordered paths and incredible pine trees. There is also a large grassy area to sit and relax. The Clemens Gardens were developed in the 1990s and offer seven acres of roses, perennials, sculptures, and a fountain. It’s really impressive and I could honestly spend all day relaxing there.

Take a Hike by the Quarries

In 1868, the first granite quarry was founded in St. Cloud, and the population boomed shortly after. There are a few ways to see the quarries, which should definitely be on your list.

The more popular route is to go to Quarry Park and Nature Reserve. It’s huge and you could spend two or three hours hiking around. There is a $5 daily pass to enter. The less well-known path is George Friedrich Park, which is free to enter. We chose George Friedrich Park because it was closer to town and is a shorter hike. These two parks were once robust granite mines. Now, they are popular places for hiking, swimming, and diving. Both parks are beautiful and absolutely worth seeing, especially in the fall.

There are so many interesting and beautiful things to do in St. Cloud, and most of them are completely free! St. Cloud has some incredible hikes and gardens and a lot of options when it comes to food and breweries. It’s definitely worth a visit if you enjoy checking out unique places off the beaten path.

11 Top Things to do in St Cloud MN: Fun Day Trip

St. Cloud Minnesota is one of those small towns that are begging you to visit more than once. That’s because there are so many fun things to do in St Cloud MN, you can’t pack them all in in one day.

I’ve included this fun destination on my list of Family Friendly Day Trips because the kids can’t stop talking about the adventure. From hiking to biking to eating some amazing food. I’m sharing my top things to do in St Cloud MN.

I recently had the opportunity to spend a half-day in St. Could. The town has so many fun things to do, I ended up only getting through half my list.

Each destination was so much fun we spent longer than planned. While we Day Tripped here, you can easily spend a weekend or even a week exploring all the fun to do. If you only have a day, here is what we managed to do.

Start off with a good breakfast

St. Cloud has two different bakeries to choose from for your morning donuts. Either Cold Spring Bakery or Dutch Maid Bakery . Both serve a large selection of doughnuts, treats, bread, and more.

They really know how to do their carbs. Cold Springs Bakery is minutes from Quarry Park.

We stopped in first thing for a wide selection of treats you don’t normally see. We ended up taking our box of breakfast and took them on our walk with us around Quarry Park.

Being a true coinsure, we decided to stop on the way out of town and get some Dutch Maid treats for the next day.

My husband and I both left wondering how we managed to get so much stuff and only spend $11. It’s on the other end of St. Cloud but worth the trip.

Morning Hike at the Quarry

Quarry Park and Nature Preserve cover 683 acres. It is the largest in the Stearns County Parks system. In 1863, two Scotsmen started the first granite foundry in central Minnesota.

As far back as 100 years ago, the stone called Saint Cloud Red Granite was quarried in the park and used in both the Landmark Center and the James J Hill House.

Mining stopped in the mid 1950’s and nature has taken over the area. By 1998, the park opened to the public as a place for public recreation year-round.

The most popular activity during summertime is Swimming at either Quarry 2 or 11. Quarry #2 is the deepest pond with 11 being shallower and having a sandy beach.  

Throughout the park is plenty of places to hike and explore. The multi-use trail system is great for hiking or biking.

In the entrance area to the park is a Derrick Exhibit. This exhibits some of the equipment used during the mining days, like the Liberty Derrick. Rock Climbing is also permitted near the exhibit for those with a permit.

Bike in St Cloud

The Wobegon Trail in St Cloud stretches 65 miles long and is 10 feet wide. Starting out in St Could, riders can take this flat path north to Alexandria, or branch off towards Holdingford.

There you’ll see Minnesota’s longest-covered bridge. It was built in 2008 and crosses South Two Rivers.

The multi-use trail passes by several small towns and fun places to stop. You could easily spend a day exploring each one with its own unique charm.

My favorite stop was in Holdingford. Not only could we see the covered bridge, but they had a great restaurant on the trail.

Lunch on the Trail at BoHo Cafe

Lunch, you must visit the BoHo Café . While this restaurant was intended with bicycles in mind, we found many people drove here because the food was that great.

Stop in for breakfast of rolls and specialty coffee. During lunch, they have creative sandwiches and salads that were out of this world.

The café is also housed an art gallery and artist workshop. Half the building is dedicated to the gallery. Inside you can sit at high-top tables, enjoy a bite to eat, and listen to live music.

Outside on the patio, enjoy the outside breeze, while kids can use sidewalk chalk or stroll through the gardens.

Best Desert in St Cloud

The Shaka Shack Hawaiian Ice is a fun feature outside the Crossroads Center Mall parking lot. Using an old shipping container, the shack has created a fun experience for the family.

Inside you can pick from an endless combination of flavors on monster-size portions of Hawaiian Ice. They have seating, and games to make the experience complete.

My kids absolutely loved this stop. Not only is this dessert practically allergy-free, there smallest portion was almost as big as their heads.

Afternoon Hike at the Sauk River Regional Park

Sauk River Regional Park is a fun place to explore in St. Cloud. The park has a series of different trails through the park, all with natural surfaces.

At the time I was there, all the links to maps were not working, so we had to take serious mental notes as to not get lost back there. The park has a beach area, dog park, and a sledding hill.

But my favorite was getting to cross the Sauk River Bridge.

Saved for another Trip

Clearwater Outfitting : A fun way to enjoy the Mississippi River. Clearwater Outfitting has multiple trips running on the gentler portion of the Mississippi River. Ranging from 5 miles to 13 trips down the river.

Munsigner Clemens Gardens : The gardens are a stunning edition to St. Cloud. Open from Spring to Fall, you’ll want to check these out. The relaxed atmosphere sits alongside the Mississippi River. It should be on your list.

Summerland Family Fun Park : Treat your family to Go Carts & Mini Golf. This fun park is a great way to spend a cool afternoon night the family will love.

Lake George: Fun Park in St. Cloud. They have fun events happening, stage performances, festivals, a playground and you can even rent Paddle Boats.

Hemker Park & Zoo : just outside of St. Cloud is this family-friendly zoo. They have a variety of different animals. They offer experiences like hand-feeding giraffes, budgies, or toss fish into their Otter area.

Would I go Back to St Cloud MN?

For us, this is when the temperatures were getting up to about 95 degrees out. Our energy levels were dropping and we needed to get home to our puppy waiting for us in her kennel.

We came back with full bellies and let plenty of fun for a return trip to St. Cloud.  I’m hoping to return in early fall to explore some of the things that time didn’t allow.
