Live reviews

Hailing from Watford, Sikth have been a band for a long time and they are at the forefront of the genre, progressive metal, almost being this side of the Atlantic Ocean’s answer to their contemporaries, Meshuggah. Their genre is tight machine gun blasts of music where the whole band play some of the most intricate riffs in perfect sync with each other, of course matching the amazing quantized recordings that they lay down.

This band hasn’t released anything new in years but announce this evening on their comeback tour that they are working on a new EP that should be out next year. One of their biggest tracks this evening is a song called “Scent of the Obscene” which reels in the audience massively as it is the song of their set that every single person who bought a ticket knows. It even charted, over ten years in the UK singles chart, making it to number 78, which lets be honest, is pretty astonishing for a metal band.

SikTh were really good considering that it was the first show of the tour and half of the material had never been played in over a decade. It was rather loud, but still enjoyable. The crowd was energetic, and Mikee and Joe getting in the crowd. They played a few new songs, but mostly from DOADD. 10/10 would go again.

SIKTH RELEASE NEW STUDIO ALBUM THE FUTURE IN WHOSE EYES?

+DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION FEATURING 6 BONUS TRACKS

+ANNOUNCE FIRST AUSTRALIAN TOUR WITH THE CONTORTIONIST

The kings have returned!

Sikth are back the watford mathcore sextet that stumbled upon a sound unexplored, who devised their own morse code of metal – one that mushroomed into labyrinthine detours and tangents, that ultimately lead to the birth of the djent metal, the band’s whose legacy gave the inspiration for bands like protest the hero, tesseract, animals as leaders and periphery after their hiatus in 2007, are back, with what will be one of the finest albums of 2017 – the future in whose eyes.

Out now on Millennium Night, the newly created label imprint from Snapper Music, home of Peaceville Records & Kscope.  SikTh, one of the Great British pioneers that have shaped heavy music over the years reveal their first full length studio album since 2006’s classic Death Of A Dead Day. Dan Weller, SikTh’s guitarist and producer proudly states “Ever since SikTh was formed way back at the turn of the century we’ve tried to self improve as musicians and as song writers. We take our music very seriously. This record feels like the one we’ve always wanted to make. We spent over a year writing it and pushed ourselves extremely hard – sometimes too hard. Opacities was the rebirth of SikTh but ‘The Future…’ is our statement – I want this album to define us. I don’t care how over ambitious it sounds – we want this record to be heard by every metal fan on the planet.”

SikTh vocalist & lyricist Mikee W Goodman adds “Personally I feel this is our best album yet. From my point I have written all vocals and lyrics. I have taken myself to some very dark places, commentated on this world as I see it. Also swimming into fictional worlds and dreamscapes. There are some beautiful moments.  The band have made incredible music, brutal, technically warped mixed with some psychedelic moments.  I think we’ve done something special here.”

sikth-band-small

The vocals were recorded at Mikee’s own studio and at Adrian Smith’s (Iron Maiden) R&R Studios  and this is the first release featuring new co-vocalist and former member of Aliases Joe Rosser “ Joe has done a great job singing on this album . He has a lot of scope to his voice, he’s very versatile indeed, we were really pleased how he sang the lines in” high praise indeed from vocalist Mikee. The guitars and drums at the renowned Monkey Puzzle House studios. Dan Weller has been producing, alongside Adam “Nolly” Getgood (Periphery) on mixing duties.

The Future In Whose Eyes? Features the first ever guest vocalist on a SikTh album – Spencer Sotelo, singer in Periphery joins Mikee on the track “Cracks Of Light”.

In late summer 2016 SikTh made their first foray into the US live arena after being invited to join Periphery on tour “ They’re really nice people, everyone on that US tour felt it was the best one they’d been on ,” smiles Mikee, it was over those weeks that a plan was hatched “ We actually got him down to R&R Studios in Uxbridge where we made the album . I really like Periphery and especially love Spencer’s voice, he’s not your usual djent singer, and he’s very much a spiritual man. He knows his and mind well and so we nailed the song really quicky”.

The spectacular artwork for The Future In Whose Eyes? has been created by 3D animator and artist Meats Meier  –   “ Meats has been a friend for years and he came out to see the show in LA and loved it. We wanted something really special and we got it, he is an absolute genius, a visionary and a pioneer.  We are all so proud to have him design our sleeve”. Meats Meier adds “This image represents the construction of the future and its ultimate demise. A perfected human race brought down by its own need to innovate and improve. A simple error breaks the machine and brings us back to the beginning.”

Prior to release, the band unveiled their music video for new track “Vivid”. Mikee explains more about this –  “Lyrically it is inspired by traumatic dreaming. The verses talk from perspective of being in the actual dream, where the chorus’ are in despair from an awoken perspective. The song itself has a lot of elements of both tradition and new SikTh.”

Sikth come out of the shadows

Armed with their first new music in nearly a decade, tech metal kings Sikth have delved into darkness to redefine music all over again.

sikth tour

This month, Sikth will release their first new music in almost a decade.

The six men who practically wrote the blueprint for the tech metal explosion that is still seeing the likes of Tesseract and Periphery flying high will be showing the proggy pups how it’s done for the very first time. As it happens, Opacities , a five-track mini-album, picks up where 2006’s Death Of A Dead Day left off. In-between the complex riffs and the bells and whistles that made Sikth, well, Sikth , you’ll find six musicians re-energised by their lengthy hiatus and a new approach to songwriting which has more groove and the space to allow their million-ideas-per-second to breathe.

Amid the controlled chaos, however, there’s an uneasiness that bubbles under the surface. A quick glance would suggest that co-vocalist Mikee Goodman’s lyrics typically examine how truly fucked society is. But, as Metal Hammer discovers, he’s picked at old wounds to explore the tar-black moments of his life – a potentially damaging experiment designed to complement the depth and pace of the music itself.

“This music was not easy to write lyrics to,” he explains, “but you have to be true to yourself. I see a lot of light and dark and Opacities is really dark, to be honest. So, there are songs about getting out of a depressive mindset, but there’s positivity and escapism, too.

“I’ve had happy periods, but I’ve had a lot more depressive periods,” he adds quietly. “It’s a massive battle, but to sing and scream and write out poetry is therapeutic.”

Reunited, and it feels... well, intense, to be honest

Tellingly, it’s the story of a 2012 trip to Japan that has informed what is possibly his best work, an atmospheric spoken-word piece called Tokyo Lights . At the time, the idea of Sikth ever performing again seemed absurd, and so, with a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction and the feeling of being uncomfortable in the UK, Mikee headed to the bustling city in search of inspiration. He’d fallen in love with the country ever since the band played there in 2004 and felt the need to hit reset and rediscover the essence of what drove him to create in the first place.

“I was in a stale place,” he reveals. “I was depressed and felt like I didn’t know what I was doing, so I wanted to go to Japan.”

With a voice like a demon guzzling a mug of hot treacle, Mikee’s lyrics recount an inspirational night out through a fantastical narrative: ‘Don’t let your boat be empty/Don’t be a sunken dream’ he admonishes at the end of the track. It would appear his 12,000-mile roundtrip paid dividends.

“It’s a magical place,” he smiles. “I felt at home, even though I don’t speak the language.”

Mikee says that channelling creative ideas into new Sikth material, video production or spoken word helps him get through the blackest of days – and he sounds all the more positive for it.

“That’s what gets it out,” he says, matter-of-factly. “To be honest, it’s where you are in your life, too. You might feel really good if things are going well. It’s when things aren’t going well that could lead you to going further and further into that place. It’s easy for people to say ‘think positive’, but it’s easier said than done. I draw on experiences of coming out of depression and [these lyrics were] a massive challenge to write. It’s a massive form of therapy for me.”

sikth tour

And to think, this outlet almost didn’t present itself.

At the turn of the millennium, Sikth were something of an anomaly in the British metal scene. Nu metal was doing brisk business, yet here were six fiercely talented musicians who were creating something unique and devoid of categorisation. It was a collision of crunch, odd tempos, frantically yelped lyrics and a sense of melodic nous seeped through a carefully crafted racket. Like Faith No More before them, it was a crash of opposing ideas and a soupçon of bristling tension that made them a force to be reckoned with. But then again, what great art came from great comfort? Some eight years after their formation, the Watford-based six-piece buckled under the weight of their self-inflicted pressure and their innovation seemed destined to become a footnote in British rock history.

Seven years later and a fortnight before Christmas 2013, the band announced plans to play a one-off show the next summer. No one saw it coming. It was the sort of news that would have made Nostradamus do a double-take had he not been quietly decomposing for several centuries. But in the years following their split, their reunion felt right. After all, the djent genre – a movement to which Sikth’s contribution is immeasurable – was going from strength to strength. That’s why their phone started to ring with festival offers, all of which were politely turned down. Then one day, it all changed. The band said yes to Andy Copping and their name was added to the top of the Red Bull stage bill at Download 2014.

It was during Part Of The Friction , the second song of their set, that the enormity of the event hit home.

“I was almost in tears,” Mikee recalls. “I had accepted that Sikth was something in the past and would never happen again. When we started playing, it was overwhelming. I wanted it so much.”

The initial idea was simple: play Donington and see how it goes. Luckily, it went very well; the band found themselves playing more festival shows before heading to Nepal and India. They announced a full UK tour and were soon performing to more people than ever before, the legend of the band having never stopped growing in those intervening years.

Despite that, with Opacities now on the table, it’s a wonder the band have had a chance to actually make anything at all. Chat to Mikee for any length of time about Sikth and it’s clear that there’s an element of creative tension running through the fold – a highly combustible spark that is doubtless what drove the band to implosion in the first place. “Pressure and stress brings different things from different people,” is Mikee’s levelheaded take on inter-band relationships. “Sikth is a band with many different visions of perfection, so it was very hard for decisions to be made. We just wanted to see how we got on with each other. It took us a while to decide to write new music because everyone is so busy now.”

Indeed, if it wasn’t creative differences threatening to scupper any new music, it was all six members of the fold having long committed themselves to other endeavours. Most prominently, perhaps, Mikee worked on Primal Rock Rebellion with Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith – a process he says was crucial in getting his head back in the game.

“Making the Primal Rock Rebellion album was one of the nicest experiences I’ve known,” he reveals. “Adrian wrote for me in a certain way and told me what I was capable of. That gave me a lot of confidence.”

Now, however, the band that made him is back in full focus, and has, as Mikee puts it, “consumed” his life as of late.

“I can’t say it’s been an enjoyable experience,” says Mikee. “Sikth is six different personalities with different opinions, so I’ll keep away while they’re recording. It was too intense for me, man. But that’s Sikth – it’s what you get and it comes out in the music.”

With Opacities about to hit the shelves – virtual or otherwise – and their biggest UK tour to date ready to kick off in December, all signs point to a future which will cast light in the darkest of corners – however fractured that light may be.

“When you’re older, you realise it’s such an honour to make music and have people who want to listen to it,” concludes Mikee. “When you create something new, there’s no other feeling like it. It’s so uplifting .”

Dan Foord and James have been keeping busy in Krokodil

Tech-ing Crew

Sikth’s huge influence on modern metal goes far beyond their own music…

Mikee Goodman (vocals): As well as guest appearances for This Is Menace and Bat For Lashes, Mikee formed Primal Rock Rebellion with Maiden legend Adrian Smith, and also has genre-smashing new band Outside The Coma on the boil.

Dan Weller (guitar): Though he recently formed In Colour with Tesseract frontman Dan Tompkins (right), Dan has found considerable success as a producer, working with the likes of Enter Shikari, Young Guns, Gallows, Rise To Remain and LostAlone.

Justin Hill (vocals): Justin was briefly also a member of In Colour, but left to concentrate on music production. He’s not done bad for himself in that respect, having worked with the likes of Heart Of A Coward, Polar and Bury Tomorrow.

Graham ‘Pin’ Pinney: Post-Sikth, Pin founded the excellent Aliases, who dropped their acclaimed Safer Than Reality mini-album in 2011. Currently signed to Basick Records, they’re expected to release their debut full-length early next year.

James Leach (bass): James is currently also strutting his stuff in Messenger and Krokodil. The latter – also featuring Sikth drummer Dan Foord, A’s Daniel P. Carter and Liber Necris vocalist Simon Wright – released debut album Nachash in 2014.

Dan Foord (drums): During the hiatus, Dan became a qualified teacher, drummed on the Primal Rock Rebellion album, did a world tour with Whiplash and, as mentioned, is now also behind the kit in Krokodil.

SikTh reunite original line-up for exclusive UK shows

Watford prog metal legends SikTh are back to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut EP, Let The Transmitting Begin.

SikTh reunite original line-up for exclusive UK shows

The mighty SikTh are back for a couple of very special shows in 2022!

The Watford prog metal legends' original line-up of vocalists Mikee Goodman and Justin Hill, guitarists Dan Weller and Graham Pinney, bassist James Leach and drummer / percussionist Dan Foord have reunited for the first time in over five years, and announced two UK dates for later this year.

“Excited to be back with Justin onstage,” enthuses Mikee. “Also with Pin being back, this is the line-up everyone knows. We want these shows to be our best ever. We plan to play songs we’ve never played before too.

“I feel the contrast between myself and Justin’s vocal styles really complement each other. I know the reason he wants to come back is the passion he has for it. And that is the reason I get onstage too. Really excited for the energy of the fans again too.”

“SikTh has always been a huge part of my life, I’m so proud of the music we created,” adds Justin. “Excited to have the opportunity to celebrate the history of the band. The energy of our live shows has always been such a rush and I can’t wait to experience it again.”

Catch SikTh at the following:

Distorted Sound Magazine

SikTh: A Tour Curated For The Fans

The most agonising part of arranging a tour is choosing a setlist, especially if you have an extensive back catalogue like  SIKTH  have. With three albums and four EPs under their belt, there is a large collection of songs to choose from. Almost all bands know that a setlist will not please everyone, no matter what songs are played. Even if they only played the classics, there would possibly still be complaints. Which is why SIKTH  went for a different route when choosing a setlist. They let their fans choose it for them.

“Well, we wanted to know what the fans wanted to hear,” lead singer Mikee Goodman explains to  Distorted Sound . He’s sat down with us to discuss the band’s two shows in London and Manchester, as well as why they have chosen the fan voted setlists, as well as what the fans can expect from these very special shows. “Since it’s a 20+ year celebration for our band. The fans are the reason we are coming back to play. We initially planned differently, to play songs we’ve never played, but when announcing the fan vote it was so positive, we just went with that.”

“It turned out to be really important [to involve the fans],” he continues. “We did plan on playing certain songs but it turned out they would rather hear others. Although I feel it’s important to show fans songs they may not have heard as much of, for this one we wanted to just give them what they want. As long as they are happy it’s all good.”

The fan vote worked by a polling system on the band’s website, where fans could vote for up to fourteen songs. The most voted will get played at  SIKTH ‘s two shows in London and Manchester, celebrating twenty years since the band’s first EP was released. However, that is not the only important thing about these two shows. It also marks the first time the band’s original lineup are playing for the first time in over six years. You’d think that everyone would feel a bit awkward after such a long time of not playing together. But that was not the case here.

“It feels better than before for some reason,” Goodman explains. “Also the sound is the classic sound everyone knows. Maybe because we all do different things in our lives now, maybe that makes it fresher, takes the pressure off a little. Although there is pressure, we really want these shows to be amongst our best.”

For such a monumental anniversary, why are  SIKTH  only playing in Manchester and London? The UK is a lot bigger than those two cities. Thankfully, the answer is a lot more simple than that. “Well they are historically our best shows and best attended shows,” Goodman says. “Obviously we’ve had amazing shows all over the UK over the years. But to pick the most consistent it would be Manchester and London. We decided just to do two big ones and a warm up in Northampton which sold out.”

Furthermore, that isn’t stopping overseas fans from attending as  Goodman  explains. “We have fans coming from all over the world for these shows, we want them to be happy.” Whilst the fans are deciding the setlists, there are songs that  Goodman  wants to hear live. “I think Summer Rain as Justin [Hill, vocals] has never sung it live before. Of course Bland Street Bloom , and Philistine Philosophies too. I would say Philistine Philosophies is probably the best vocals I’ve written in SIKTH . The energy of Bland Street Bloom is always insane too. Then also Pussyfoot , the fans usually go extra wild on that. [On the other hand], some of [the songs] lyrically, I really don’t want to sing anymore. Or some songs translate better on record than live.”

Despite the overwhelming positivity of the fan chosen setlist,  Goodman  is unsure if he’ll use it for future shows. “If you asked me personally, I would have loved to play the whole of Opacities , or even Weavers Of Woe from The Future In Whose Eyes? . I would like to play many songs we’ve not played before. But it is something to think about in future for sure.”

As for what the fans can expect from the live shows, the answer is: “vibes and energy. In rehearsals, it has been better than ever for our band. We are gonna give it our all and hope the crowd is still full of energy. We are all really looking forward to them. We have also invested more in lighting for Manchester and London, wanting to give the fans more of a spectacle,”  Goodman  explains. He hasn’t said much about what the setlists are made up of, but he promises that it will cover all of  SIKTH ‘s musical history. “The crowd will have to wait and see. They love a lot of the older classics though, I will say that.”

He also would recommend that other bands use the fan-voted setlist route at least once in their career. “It shows you what they love the most. You may have thought a song doesn’t go so well live reaction wise could actually be a fan favourite.”

He has a point, as a lot of songs in a band’s catalogue might not seem special on the surface; however, if you go into fan social media communities or ask fans what they would consider a fan favourite, the song that you’d least expect is usually the one that fans love the most. For the two shows in Manchester and London,  SIKTH  can be expected to play a lot of fan favourites.

November 26th, 2022

After many years of wishing for a reunion of the OG lineup and a tour from the UK progressive metal pioneers, SikTh, they had announced that for their 20th anniversary, the original members would be reuniting to play 2 shows! One in Manchester, and one in London (Camden), England! As excited as I was, not seeing a US tour was sort of a bummer.

Was i really going to be able to fly to london, for one show well, the short answer was yes luckily, i was already in italy at the time, and it was a short and inexpensive flight to get to london. the stars had started to align., over the years, after having their vocalist mikee goodman do vocals on a song of mine back in 2008 called, “vultures in suits”, and then having interviewed him in seattle, when sikth had their first us tour in 2016 (with a change in vocalists), he and i have stayed in touch periodically. when i heard about these 20th anniversary shows, i reached out to congratulate him and say how excited i was for all of them. i mentioned about being in europe and that i was going to see the “art of the possible”…if i could somehow get out there and see this amazing show of course, since i’m a photographer, i told mikee that it would be awesome to get to shoot the show. he let me know that if i could get there, i would be set up with a photo pass. at that point (since i knew it would sell out) the search for flights and airbnbs got very serious. i mean, i already was serious, to just be able to see the show, but now knowing that i would be the only photographer allowed to shoot (besides their own guy, oli duncanson), the honor was huge and also humbling…and i was ecstatic. am i finally going to get to see sikth, live with the og lineup and be able to shoot it they were such a huge inspiration to me when i was a guitarist in a southern california progressive death metal band., when word got out that the band sikth, who are arguably the forefathers of progressive metal, were going to break up back in 2008, many of us faithful sikth fans were absolutely gutted. especially those of us in the usa who hadn’t had the chance to see them perform live, since before they split up, they never got around to doing a us tour., they were the epitome of where creativity, uniqueness, and pure technical ability meet in the middle and formed voltron…a massive, melodic, brutally heavy, wildly skilled and beautifully poetic monster of auditory amazingness. years later, they ended up getting back together for a string of shows as well as a new ep, "opacities,"  and a full length album, “the future in whose eyes”, both of which are absolutely phenomenal. but by the time they went to write and record “the future in whose eyes”, one of the original vocalists, justin hill, had already decided to step down from the band to pursue his career in music production (which he is still doing, and working on some amazing things). so for this last record, they tapped vocalist joe rosser, who was also the vocalist for sikth guitarist graham “pin” pinney’s other band, “aliases”., joe can certainly hold his own in the vocal department, and i believe he was a pretty good choice to fill justin’s shoes. that album is a phenomenal album to me, even having changed one of the vocalists. that is never an easy task in music, as people tend to grow so attached to frontmen and women. in 2016, they finally had their chance to do a tour in the us, and though i wished it would have been with the original lineup, i was just super happy to finally be able to see sikth perform live not to knock joe one bit, because he did an amazing job…but when you’re attached to a band with a certain lineup, it will always feel, well, “not 100%” when a founding member is no longer there., now, fast forward to 2022. the announcement of these two, very special 20th anniversary shows with the original lineup had me extremely excited. especially knowing just how possible it was for me to see it and photograph it everything lined up perfectly, and off to london i went to be able to see this amazing band that has been a favorite of mine for so long, in their own country/hometown area, for such a special show, was just such a highlight. of course the show was sold out, and completely packed. so many folks with their sikth merch on, and british accents all around, it just became even more surreal that i was there. as i stood in the photo pit waiting, with the rest of my metal head family, sikth’s intro music began to play. as the lights dimmed, a choppy, glitched out, mash up of various sikth vocal lines, samples, and riffs played. a smile just took over my face. pure excitement that the time has come after dan foord made his way to the drum throne, illuminated with a backlight of solid red, as if he were a member of the dark side and had just come out of the death star, guitarist “pin” began walking to his “stage left” side, in front of me, with his hands outstretched…and the crowd erupted. the time was here. bassist james leach and guitarist dan weller followed, and the crowd continued to roar. then it was time for the powerhouse duo of vocalists mikee goodman and justin hill to show their faces. the show hadn’t started yet, and you could feel the energy about to explode. everyone was so extremely happy to be here in this moment., click or tap below for the full gallery, they started off with “scent of the obscene”, one of their most popular songs from their first full length album “the trees are dead and dried out, wait for something wild”. thundering drums, the thick, slappin’ and poppin’ bass lines, and then the familiar and amazing guitar tapping and harmonies filled the venue before mikee and justin’s insane, back and forth vocal patterns came in, and the show was off to the races full of energy and amazing vibes. as soon as the chorus hit, to hear and see justin belt those lines out, was just like a sigh of relief. it was so absolutely friggin’ cool to see the og members on stage together, and destroying the stage with an amazing 5k light show playing along to all of the intricacies and changes of the music, and their vocalist mikee, jumping way up into the air, off of the stage riser on many occasions, the energy of the show never faltered. even when the band went silent and mikee goodman took the spotlight and belted out his spoken word poetry “when will the forest speak”, from their debut album, the entire crowd played along and screamed at the top of their lungs, all of the words of this wonderfully animated piece. (fun fact, mikee is so versatile with his many voices, that he also does voice acting for popular video games). you could easily tell that this was a crowd full of the diehard sikth fans. for me, this was one of the highlights of the show you don’t see bands doing stuff like this, let alone the entire crowd being able to recite the poetry in its different voices, as well., the set list was a mix of songs spanning both of their first two full length albums, as well as one song, “philistine philosophies”, from their “opacities” ep. it was just a perfect set list. i wish it were longer but that’s my selfishness, just wanting to hear more and see more from one of my favorite bands. i would have loved to hear some songs from the album “the future in whose eyes”, but considering that was written and recorded after justin hill left, i understand why they opted not to play anything from that album. this was a celebration of who they have been as a band. and even though that album, as well as joe rosser, is a part of that history…it was very special to have justin come back as a vocalist, and it only made sense to perform the songs that he was a part of in that 20 year history. when they closed out the show with what might be their biggest song, “bland street bloom”, the energy was just as electric as it was at the top of the show. the crowd was extremely amped. when sikth went into one of the sickest breakdowns you will ever hear in metal, the mosh pit opened up and it just went crazy flashing lights, syncopated guitar chugs, double kick patterns, and guttural screams…it was just phenomenal. i, evidently along with the rest of the venue, was so excited for this part of the song sikth absolutely brought the house down. i wasn’t ready for it to end, i will say this…my fingers are crossed, hoping that this wasn’t the last we’ll see of sikth. everyone has things going on in their lives, which cause bands to make certain decisions. i respect all of that, and wish nothing but the best for these guys…but i am certainly hoping that this wasn’t the last time i get to see them. and what would be just as amazing, is if they decided to put out more music if that never happens, then so be it, but at least the memories of this amazing experience, along with the photos i captured, will always be here this was easily one of the sickest shows i’ve seen.  an unforgettable night..
