Surf Getaways

As the name of this women travel company indicates, Surf Getaways is an Australian-based company offering surf holidays in various locations around the world.

Founded by a surf instructor with years of experience teaching at a fixed surf school and a surf lover, the company now offers getaways where both newbies and experienced surfers can enjoy a sports-holiday with lots of vitamin C.

Tours are for all levels and some of them allow non-surfing companions to join too.

+Small group, premium and unique experiences all about surfing with very experienced teachers.

-Trip geared towards surfing and less appealing for non-surfers. Destinations are still very Asia-Pacific focused.

Well-established Condé Nast is the publisher of several popular magazines among which Vogue, GQ and Condé Nast Traveler. They also launched a high-end line of women-only tours called Women Who Travel for women traveling together to appreciate the finer things in life.

These tours have a food and cultural focus and are organized by El Camino , curated by the Condé Nast Editors who also run a podcast on female travel and a large Facebook group.

Almost all tours include lots of evening music and dancing, cooking classes and real exposure to the local culture. There is also a trip photographer to take all those candid shots.

El Camino tours are quite different from the majority of other tour companies. They are bold and immersive in the real sense of the word. They feature artists in all areas, from food to crafts to music, and none of the usual touring. No checklist, no museums, no monuments.

Woander Tours is a great option for when you want to explore on a guided tour, on your own. They offer self-guided audio tours in cities like Edinburgh and Dublin, and give you the tools you need to explore your destination by yourself, but never alone.

In taking one of these tours, you will connect with your destination through the stories you’ll hear, the places you will see, and the people you will meet along the way.

Purposeful Nomad

Purposeful Nomad focuses on what the name indicates, making sure that their trips have a positive impact, as they say “responsible, rewarding, safe, sustainable and ethical travel for women, by women”.

Their focus is on women-only, intimate and small group trips that go deeper and do not focus on the main tourist sites but on responsible tourism. Instead, you will learn something new like how to shear an alpaca or cook using traditional methods.

Days are spent at farms, beaches or at local foundations and charities fighting for women’s rights; there are yoga sessions and slow days by the sea. The emphasis of Purposeful Nomad is on slow travel.

+Get exposed to (mostly) women-owned charities and organisations from around the world and relax with lots of free time to simply take it all in. The purpose is to return recharged.

-Experiences tend to shy away from major tourist sites (not bad per se) and may not cover the key tourist attractions. Prices are on the high side.

WanderTours

Started, and almost always led, by Beth in 2008 as a means for her to take other women on some of the places she loves, WanderTours offers a small list of tours for women only (with some exceptions) that feel more like a group of friends getting together than a group tour company.

Beth encourages future guests to friend her on Facebook and get to know her better to decide if they would enjoy going on a trip.

She also hosts the She’s Bold Podcast , in which she shares stories of extraordinary women who inspire in many areas like travel, music, fitness, and more.

+The only women’s adventure travel company that organizes trips to Papua New Guinea giving you a unique opportunity (if pricey). Cozy and friendly, as if you were traveling with a friend.

-On the pricey side but this also includes a portion of the cost devoted to a local charity that usually works with women or children. Group tours are a bit larger than others (up to 16 guests).

Adventures in Good Company

Founded in 1999 by Marian Marbury, Adventures in Good Company focuses on adventure travel for women with emphasis on women of all ages.

Their trips have an outdoor focus and involve various level of activity depending on your choice. There is hiking across Greenland or the villages of Cinque Terre, kayaking in the sea, exploration in the Amazon or multi-sport trips with a bit of everything. Birders can marvel at Guyana and seafarers can sail in Turkey.

Because of the focus on nature, Adventures in Good Company has a strong responsible tourism charter and follows the leave no trace principles. Traveling slowly and being a fully remote team also helps contribute to sustainable travel.

In 2020 Kelly Kimple assumed ownership of the company, bringing fresh energy and a commitment to the vision and philosophy of guiding on which Adventures in Good Company was founded.

The Girls’ Guide to Paris

Founded by Doni, an American living in France, primarily with a focus on the country, The Girls’ Guide to Paris now offers 50+ different trips to destinations around the world with a touch of luxury, a welcome glass of champagne and a default no sharing policy.

You will find holidays ideal for mature women like wine trips, writing retreats, artist-themed itineraries and a wide range of destinations and curated trips to satisfy any craving. All solo travel female packages are mid to high end and prices are offered per room, but you can get a discount if you book with a friend.

+Very strong culture, food & wine focus with a long tradition and track record delivering fabulous experiences for mature women.

-Trips are on the expensive side since the positioning is high end. No option for pairing guests to save on accommodation.

Damesly goes beyond typical group tours and focuses on travel, writing and photography workshops and trips of self-discovery where there are elements of coaching, mentorship and business brought together to help you find clarity or direction.

The company is the travel arm of Go Girl Guides and Women’s Travel Fest and has a strong bond in the creative community appealing to women who may work in the field, although open to everyone.

Trips are mid to high end and have a focus on culture and beautiful sites. Destinations are photogenic and perfect for those who love to photograph.

+Like-minded creative community of women with similar passion means you will be among your own. Workshop trips have a skill-building element. Reasonably priced for the mid-high end range of accommodations.

-Prices are on the high side. Guides are most likely foreign and not local. While guests are female, the businesses supported are often not.

WHOA – Women High on Adventure

WHOA is a boutique adventure-focused women travel company founded by Allison and Danielle in 2013 to offer active holidays such as hiking to Everest Base Camp or Kilimanjaro with a sustainable and responsible twist.

Their trips put travelers in touch with local women to facilitate cultural interaction and they are all about empowerment. The company works with small local female-owned businesses instead of bigger ones.

WHOA is all about inclusion and has even launched trips for plus sized women. As they put it “WHOA women find comfort in the uncomfortable. We bask in the sun and dirt. Never afraid to break a nail, a sweat or a stereotype. Adventure is an outlook and it’s how we choose to live.”

There are two types of trips on offer, adventures and expeditions and WHOA can also organise your own private group trip. The majority of the trips have a maximum of 12 to 18 participants.

+Fun and unapologetic with a strong responsible and sustainable tourism focus and women empowerment.

– Small tour company so limited list of tours and all very hardcore active (except for the Oktoberfest which may be tougher on the liver than the legs!). Some trips can be quite large (18 pax for Kilimanjaro). Although guests are female, guides aren’t always female or local.

Wild Women Expeditions

Wild Women Expeditions has been around for over 30 years and focuses on adventure and active trips for women of all ages.

They have wide portfolio of trips to many countries in the world all under the same active common denominator. They also have yoga retreats and safari expeditions.

As they put it “We encourage you to let go and get wild! We value freedom of expression and want to give you the space to maybe see yourself in a new light, outside of your regular responsibilities and everyday roles.”

Wild Women Expeditions also organises private trips for groups and has a couple of trips for teenage girls.

The company focuses on being in the moment so all trips start with a discussion on photography and videography and recommends guests to be in the moment and void constant social media updates. Likewise, they encourage participants not to bring drones.

+Experienced women’s tour company. Wide portfolio with several departures for some of the trips means it is easier to find the right one for you. 7-day risk free cancellation policy and the ability to pay in instalments.

-Slow and clunky website that makes it hard and time-consuming to search and compare. If you are someone who likes to document everything or take lots of photography and videography you may find the trip philosophy to be against it.

The Women’s Travel Group

The Women’s Travel Group was established in 1992 and has a portfolio of women trips that usually include more than one country and cater to an older demographic interested in having a more in-depth conversation about the culture, the politics and the history of a place. As its President, Phyllis Stoller, put it to us, “Our guides are for smart women who bring complicated questions.”

You will find some of the popular destinations as well as more unusual ones like Albania, Georgia or Madagascar.

Accommodation tends to be on the higher end and meals better than average. Emphasis is on culture and food and the itinerary is closed. No shopping stops and no free time. Prices are mostly all inclusive and there are no surprises or hidden costs.

Phyllis continues, “We often have a speaker who talks about the dark side of a country. For example, a human rights worker in Chile under Pinochet; an economic development expert in Albania; a Fistula Doctor in Ethiopia. We like controversy to get the group to talk.”

+More in-depth conversation to truly get under the skin of a place, unique to The Women’s Travel Group. No extras that aren’t included. Packed itinerary gets a lot in.

-Closed itinerary means you need to love the whole (or you can skip some parts). The website is a bit clunky; Information is hard to locate and compare so it might be best to reach out to them directly for the trips you are interested in.

AdventureWomen

Founded in 1982, AdventureWomen runs one of the oldest female travel group trips with a focus on adventure travel for women over the age of 35 who want to step outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves.

The company was purchased by the current owner Judi Wineland and her two daughters in 2016, and today runs trips to 65 countries. As the company says, they are not a travel company but a relationship one.

In an interview Wineland says, “We’re kind of a tribe of sorts, seeking other like-minded spirits to share our adventures with. So, if you want to make travel experiences really transformational  for  women, it’s probably best if women are driving the ship.”

AdventureWomen has one of the widest portfolios of destinations and a strong and well-established track-record with a guide-ambassador combo per trip, surveys and research into female travel and lots more.

Like most other women travel groups in this list the company is female-owned and works with female-owned businesses. AdventureWomen also organizes private trips for your female group.

+Company with long experience in the industry. Huge array of destinations and a focus on community and relationship.

-Prices are very high for some of the trips considering they are for shared accommodations. Age restriction is both a plus and a minus and you should expect a higher age representation.

Explorer Chick

Explorer Chick is another a female adventure travel company for women traveling together to conquer new heights, and we mean that literally as well as figuratively.

They shy away from luxury and premium tours and instead focus on getting you back in nature and staying in the purest accommodations; tents, yurts and huts.

As they say “We promise hysterical laughing, unladylike behavior, strings of cuss words, and happy exhaustive fatigue on all of our adventures”. Or, as the founder puts it, “we would do cool shit in cool places with cool chicks!”

I think you get the gist of the company’s philosohy!

Besides organizing women only adventure tours, Explorer Chick also offer day trips and long weekend getaways within the US which consist of adventures and hiking trips across the country. They can also organize private departures for any of their advertised tours where men are welcome to join.

+Strong focus on having fun and little tolerance for moaners and complainers who will be removed from the trips.

-Shorter trips are on the expensive side. Dietary needs may not be catered for (in which case you may have to bring your own food). No instalment plans.

Sights and Soul Travel

Sights and Soul Travel is a women travel package company that specializes in high-end women travel tours which include premium experiences and activities, wine and food and upscale hotels and hit the traditional tourist sites.

Expect wine tasting, spas, wellness elements and fine dining built into a more traditional and cultural trip.

Tours have a lot of activities and a packed itinerary so you will get to cover a lot. Because of the type of trip, they are appealing to mother-daughter getaways and the company states that their average guest is above the age of 55.

+Huge array of destinations with a more traditional travel style: buses, cities and main sites. Most of the trips are almost all inclusive.

-The itineraries are packed which can be a Pro and a Con. Prices are on the high-end for a shared accommodation. Groups can be a bit larger than other companies (up to 16 guests)

Femscape Sojourns

Femscape Sojourns was founded in 2018 and is a boutique mother-daughter small group travel company that organizes trips based on the traveler’s age. There are trips for women in their 20s and 30s and for women over 40. The company also has specific mother-daughter trips.

Founded by Tami and Latifah, Femscape Sojourns wants to empower women in the places they visit so they work and support local women-owned businesses. The idea is that travelers preferences change with age and that is why trips are tailored to various age groups.

In keeping with that, the mother-daughter duo escort the group in their age range.

+Small groups of 6-12 women. Unique mother-daughter trips for bonding. Cozy and personalised, hosted by the owners. Some trips have a free day you can customise.

-As the company is relatively new, the range of trips is very limited to Barcelona and Morocco.

Fit & Fly

Fit & Fly takes the idea of a fitness and wellness retreat to the next level with premium & luxury accommodation, local exploration and world class instructors.

Guests start the day with a fitness class and some evenings end with yoga, but the rest of the day is spent exploring the destination. Fitness is at the core of the trips.

-Very high price, especially for the single rooms. Limited options for solo travelers to share with other as many rooms are for single use or friends booking together.

SmarTours is a US company that specializes in creating exciting international tours at accessible prices. The company focuses and responsible and sustainable travel with groups an average of 23 guests.

SmarTours has an exclusive section of women-only tours, aimed at mature women who want to have a once in a lifetime experience. They inspire and empower women to travel and offer many immersive female-focused experiences in their trips.

Some of their top women-only tour destinations are Jordan, Egypt and Turkey. A few of their amazing female-focused experiences are: a modern Egyptian women lecture and connecting with Jordanian local women.

They also have a FB group where women can find a roommate or connect with fellow female guests before their trip.

Road scholar is known for its educational trips that are intensely focused on culture, learning and getting deep into the history of a place through lectures and sessions on various topics.

Besides their general trips that are open to anyone, the Road Scholar Women trips are exclusively for women. Some of their itineraries are exclusively women-only and designed with women in mind, whereas others are just women-only departures with the same general program.

+In-depth cultural and historical understanding with lectures led by specialists and experts on various cultural aspects of the country.

-Limited destinations for their women-only tours. Very large groups of 13 to 24 guests means the experience is different than that of a smaller group tour company.

Besides the above women’s tours there are a few other tours for women worth mentioning, as follows:

• Dare to detour offers retreats in the US that are more about self-discovery and taking a break from your daily life to pause, re-frame, rethink, and perhaps find yourself and your path again.
• Women traveling together offer solo traveler tours for women in the US. Trips are usually 6-7 days long and mostly culturally-focused.
• Living Big Travel is not an exclusive women travel group company but rather a custom-tour company that organizes trips for solo travelers so you can reach out to them if you wish to go on an adventure on your own.
• She Hit Refresh is a community which also organizes retreats in Spain and Morocco for women over the age of 30 who want to make a big change and pursue a life of travel. As the founder puts it “[the retreats are] a magical week of exploration, introspection, and inspiration!”
• Adventurous Women is an Australian company who offer tours, day trips, retreats and many memorable experiences throughout Australia. Most of the women who join them come solo and there’s a wide age range. Depending on the kind of adventure you’re into, you can find everything from hiking to water-based trips.
• Diva Destinations is a UK company that specializes in bringing together lesbian & queer women on group holidays. They have group tours in the UK, US, Norway and Portugal.

Why you should join a women travel group

Women want to travel and sometimes, they don’t have the right friend or travel companion to do so. While many choose to travel on their own ( watch our mini-documentary to find out more), many prefer to join a group. Both choices are amazing and rewarding, if you’re still thinking about it, get some inspiration from our solo travel quotes .

Although it sounds like an oxymoron, solo travel tours are a great alternative for inexperienced travelers who prefer the comfort of an organized tour where they can make new friends and gather the courage to go it alone in the future.

So far, we’ve taken over a hundred women on trips all around the world, from swimming with whales in French Polynesia to backpacking across glacial landscapes in Alaska and Patagonia. I wanted to let you know about my experience with Girls Guide to the World before you recommend them to anyone else. It has been a nightmare…

I signed up to go on what I thought would be the trip of a lifetime to sail in Thailand in April 2024. The trip was two 44 foot catamarans with a private chef, 8 women and two captains. Before I signed up for the trip I spoke with the owner at length and was assured that everything would be perfect. The trip would be very safe with the two boats and so many participants.

Only one other person signed up for the trip and because the owner of the company did not want to lose her deposit, she decided that there would be only 1 boat, two paying travelers and that she would go along with her cousin. I do not feel it is even safe to sail around in a small sailboat alone with just a few women. When I sent an email to her in January expressing my concerns she ignored it. Only when I informed her that I would not be paying the balance of my trip did she contact me. She has continued to refused to cancel the trip, refused to refund or transfer my $2600 deposit to another trip and then sent an email out offering a discount of $1400 for anyone else to take my place. That $1400 discount was actually part of my deposit.

The website clearly states that if In the highly unusual event that Girls’ Guide to the World has to reschedule or cancel a trip, we will offer you the option of a) Joining us on the rescheduled trip at a later date (we will make every effort to pick new dates that work for everyone), b) applying your payment(s) towards a different trip, or c) receiving a full refund. Based on the fact that this trip was not at all what was advertised I believe it should have been cancelled and I should have been given the opportunity to choose a, b or c. Instead they decided to keep my deposit and move forward with one paying traveler.

This company clearly cares only about the bottom line in my opinion. I would never recommend them ever to anyone! Buyer beware!

An Inside Look At Being A Female Tour Guide

Are you wondering what it is like to be a woman in tourism, precisely being a female tour guide? Whether you’re a woman looking to start their own tour operator business or you’re just curious on the matter, we’ve got you covered in this blog. We couldn’t think of a better way to dive deeper into this topic than interviewing three of our clients, who just so happen to be excellent and experienced female tour guides and owners of successful tour companies.

1. How long have you been in the tourism industry?

Candice: After nearly three decades in media & international public relations, I fell in love with creating joy for others and storytelling through tourism in 2017. So, 5 years.

Jennifer: I’ve been in tourism in San Diego for about 20 years. For most of those years it was a side hustle while I worked a “real” job, but for the last six years it has been my main source of income. I own my own walking tour company, but also work with larger companies as a step-on guide.

Karin: My venture into tourism occurred on a very part-time basis in 2010 when I organized several local tourism conferences and networking events which promoted the historical assets of the region I lived in. From there, I started organizing occasional tours based on the historical assets which interested me. I specifically started my company City Tour Detroit in 2016 when demand for city tours increased dramatically. I figured it was now or never. I opted for now.

2. Why did you choose the travel sector?

Candice: Travel has been part of my work prior to me officially working in tourism, including traveling with foreign government officials for an international corporation. When I started in local tourism, it felt like the perfect fit for my experience with my passions for storytelling and history.

Jennifer: I love traveling myself so it’s a treat to meet people doing the same thing. People are endlessly fascinating and I really enjoy getting to know them during small group tours. I also love storytelling and I live in a place that is known for its beauty, but also has some really interesting stories about its past and the people who got us to where we are today.

Karin: I’ve always liked the travel industry. In retrospect, I wish I would have chosen it much earlier in my career. When I travel, I always love to take short guided tours to find out more about the destination. I believe day tours provide valuable knowledge about the places you’re visiting and help you make the most of the limited time you may have there. I also think taking longer tours can be beneficial as someone else handles the logistics and all you have to do is show up.

3. What are some overlooked challenges for female guides?

• People without housing are more likely to approach a female over a male. The same people may feel more comfortable approaching tours led by females. Guides often need to handle people who talk to tour guests asking for money or follow tours they didn’t pay for. These situations may result in the guide & tour guests feeling unsafe. It can negatively impact the tour experience for guests. People who approach tour groups are often male, bigger, stronger, more intimidating looking than female guides, with an added concern that the person may have unpredictable behaviors. A female tour guide must help her guests feel safe while not putting herself at risk, and diffusing the situation.
• Many tours run into hours after sunset. Walking back to a vehicle or public transportation in the dark to go home may feel more unsafe to a female guide.
• Guests in male only group tours like bachelor party tours don’t always feel like they can fully relax for their guy time around a female guide.

Jennifer: I don’t know how overlooked they are, but there is always the struggle to be treated the same way male guides are treated. Men are given credibility immediately where women have to earn it. Male motorcoach drivers also treat male guides differently than female guides. Many male guides and drivers would probably deny that, but I’ve seen it a lot in the last 20 years.

Karin: From my perspective, I don’t think female guides face any overlooked challenges. The field appears to be very welcoming to men and women of all ages. That said, I only offer walking tours or step-on guide services for a short duration. Perhaps, if I were young, attractive, and on multi-day tours, there might be some sort of occasional sexual harassment to deal with or other challenging situations with management. I’m old or what the media dubs “invisible” and I’m good with that lol. Plus, I’m the boss in my company so I don’t have to deal with challenging management issues such as higher ups not implementing my ideas.

4. How would you recommend travel companies handle these overlooked challenges for female guides?

• Keep open communications with all your guides, but also specifically ask guides about situations that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe, not only during the tours, but before and after. If there are situations that females may generally feel unsafe, they need to feel open sharing it. When you know specific concerns, which will vary by each person, location and situation, then it’s easier to brainstorm ways to help it feel safer. Also, have guides in training follow your best guides on tours to help them understand the style and also be exposed to different situations they may encounter.
• For people approaching the tour group for money, I will use a respectful, but firm voice. I’ll often say something like, “Sir, this is my tour group. I’m working, so if you leave my guests alone, I’d appreciate it. Thank you.” Confident body language is also helpful in ending the interruption quickly.
• For unhoused people who are listening to the stories, they sometimes encroach within the group’s personal space. I’ll say, “You’re welcome to listen to this story here, but then the group is moving on. If you could give people their personal space, we’d very much appreciate it.” (Often accompanied by a hand gesture to signify they should back up.)
• For people who are not part of the tour group that are following along to the next stop, I’ll give them a business card and say (with a smile), “Hi, This is a paid tour, but please look us up on our website if you’re interested in joining one in the future. Thank you.”
• For groups where the guides are not necessarily a natural fit, like a guy’s bachelor party with a female guide, teach guides to adapt to new situations and focus on creating a professional experience for the guests. When you don’t need to share something with them about the tour, give them space to enjoy their friend time. When speaking with them, focus on adding value to the experience (facts about the tastings or building history, for example), work in any common ground topic you’ve overheard to help them feel more comfortable with you.

Jennifer: Work with the bus companies to bring it to their attention. Since most management of tour companies and bus companies are male they probably don’t see the problem, let alone address it. All tour companies should address the extra challenges of being female on tour during training. Acknowledging that there are differences alone would go a long way to making female guides not wonder if they are the only ones who perceive differences.

5. What do you hope the industry looks like for female guides 10 years from now?

Candice: More training in guiding and customer service, as this makes all the guides operate more uniformly and builds confidence in guides, including female. Also create a company environment where people can safely express their concerns and offer suggestions of improvement. This maximizes the brain power, plus balances experience and concerns of all staff.

Jennifer: I hope there are lots of women in all levels of travel in 10 years, especially in leadership.

Karin: In Detroit, most of the receptive tour operators are female run. The majority of multi-day tour operators and tour guides I work with or know personally are female. I hope that trend continues. Whether one is showing off their city or leading guests on treks across the world, wonderful career opportunities exist for males and females in the tourism sector.

6. What tips do you have for travel companies to make female guides feel more comfortable?

Candice: Keep communication open. Ask how things are going. Ask if there are suggestions to make tours better. Ask if there are any situations or areas where they feel unsafe. Females often feel like they need to quietly tolerate situations as part of the job, when there are solutions that can improve the experience for the guide and the tour guests. Getting this information is the most important step, as you can then start brainstorming on how to improve tours and also help guides feel safe and involved in the improvement of the company.

Jennifer: I think all guides (male and female) can benefit from ongoing training that addresses what is happening in the field now. Having a space to take time to talk about what they have experienced, and be able to get input from other guides on how they addressed a similar situation is one of the most important things a tour company can do. There needs to be two way communication, and guides need to know that they are valued and can get advice and/or tools/resources from management, and management needs to have a clear idea of what their employees are facing in the field.

The Best Adventure Destinations According to Fearless Female Guides

With women’s adventure travel on the rise, we asked the experts about the next must-see spots to hike, climb, and connect with culture..

Note: Though COVID-19 has stalled a lot of travel plans, we hope our stories can offer inspiration for your future adventures—and a bit of hope.

Since the first dedicated women’s travel companies took off in the 1970s, ladies looking to adventure have been commanding an increasing share of the market. Women are more empowered than ever to boldly go, and they want to foster and support communities of like-minded travelers while they’re going.

Companies such as AdventureWomen and Wild Women Expeditions , which have been in operation for 38 and 29 years respectively, have been joined by the likes of WHOA Travel (founded in 2013), Damesly (founded in 2016), and a female-driven trips campaign by REI Adventures in 2017 called Force of Nature . But the number of women seeking active vacations isn’t all that has grown—the number of women leading trips has risen, too.

We talked with some of these inspiring adventurers to get their picks for the best adventure travel spots around the world. These intrepid experts weigh in on the best spots for a radical sojourn right now. They’re great places for women to travel, of course, but everyone’s welcome.

Kulusuk, a village in East Greenland

The landscape is wild and the climate is unforgiving, but for travelers willing to rise to the challenge, the views as you kayak past glaciers and admire Arctic marine life are unparalleled. “As a guide, what I love most about spending time there is seeing the difference in how I see the wilderness versus how my friends from [Greenland] do,” says Katie Crafts, once a polar expedition guide who works with Natural Habitat Adventures and Lindblad–National Geographic Expeditions . “When I see a beautiful iceberg, they see how the tidal currents interact with the winds and how that might impact the fishing. Greenland has taught me a new way of seeing the natural land.”

Greenland is also a place where the landscape lends itself to gender parity, Crafts says. “In traditional East Greenlandic culture, every individual plays a crucial role for the survivability of the communities: men and women, children and elderly alike. It impacts everything from modern-day beauty standards to leadership positions and more.”

GAdventures’ CEO and tour guide Fabi Cornejo is no stranger to Peru , having grown up in the capital, Lima. She aims to shed light on the versatility of a country often overshadowed by an oft-visited landmark: “Nowadays when someone mentions Peru, one place immediately comes to mind, which is Machu Picchu. I think many travelers don’t know that we have a lot more to show and more to explore than just a single destination.” She assures there is something for every kind of adventurer, from kayaking on Lake Titicaca in Puna to ziplining and rafting to journeying inward via yoga retreats. “Whether you’re interested in hiking, archaeological sites, or wellness, you can find it here. We have it all.” She divulges that one of her biggest joys while traveling is connecting with the people. Having led groups into Cuzco’s Sacred Valley to experience life among local communities, she believes one of the best ways for immersion is through a homestay. Cornejo says, “Little by little we know we have to learn more about the local communities and use that knowledge in a better way than we do now.”

“The Arabia of your imagination doesn’t exist,” says Annie Hawkins, who has been guiding with Wilderness Travel since 1995. “But Oman is a gorgeous country and perfectly safe, including for women.” Not many tourists from outside the region think of it as a tourism destination, she notes, because it feels too far or they have misapprehensions about security. “I go for the culture. There are markets and people still wearing traditional clothing. The locals are very conversant with visitors, and many tour operators organize trips there,” she says, so getting there isn’t as far-fetched as it seems.

The Canadian Rockies

“It’s that quintessential activity adventure option,” says Nicole Wineland-Thomson, the director of programming for AdventureWomen. “The guides there are out of this world. The hiking in the region is unbelievable. And the turquoise blue water matched with the mirrored lakes and the beautiful landscape, the entire nation’s parks, the mountains. It is such a perfect adventure destination for women.” Every season is ripe with opportunities, from skiing and snowshoeing across glaciers to horseback riding and even scuba diving in Banff National Park . For an extra dose of exhilaration, she suggests spelunking in the ancient limestone cave systems glistening with calcite crystal formations. But Wineland-Thomson encourages visitors to look beyond the glimmering lakes and snow-capped peaks and visit the towns, too. “I think people walk away really surprised by the local people and by quaint little villages that are tucked in the mountains,” she says.

Bhutan is another of Wineland-Thomson’s favorites. “It really is a Himalayan jewel. It’s like this hidden gem that not many people go to,” partly due to a selective entry process. The small, isolated kingdom tucked in the edge of the eastern Himalayas is committed to environmental and sustainable tourism, barring independent travelers. Visits need to be “prearranged and pre-registered” and “go through a vetted known partner in Bhutan.”

Wineland-Thomson says the effort is worth the chance to hike the Himalayas, interact with the women of a Buddhist nunnery, gape at historic temples and UNESCO World Heritage sites, camp in a secluded valley overlooking a river, and trek to the sacred temple complex of Paro Taktsang—also known as “Tiger’s Nest”—perched on the edge of a cliff. But a myriad of activities isn’t what makes Bhutan unique. In a nation that governs by a philosophy of gross domestic happiness, the locals alone are a reason to visit. “They’re just genuinely nice people,” Wineland-Thomson says. “They believe in giving, they believe in being generous and being kind as a way of supporting one another.”

A summer evening in Leh Ladakh

“The culture in India is so diverse,” says Sana Jinah, a Mumbai-born tour leader for Intrepid Travel . “The different cities and states throughout each has its own distinct personality.” Her top contenders there are Rajasthan, Ladakh, and Madhya Pradesh. “Leh Ladakh is in northern India, ideal for women who are interested in mountains, treks, and hiking.” For an urban adventure, head to Mumbai, “a very modern and developed side of India.”

Alaska Annie Van Dinther, an Arctic guide at Natural Habitat Adventures, has more than 20 years of experience under her belt. When she is not braving the infamously volatile waters of Drake Passage or kayaking in Baja, she and her family are enjoying the Alaskan wilderness they call home. “Kachemak Bay State Park is my playground,” she says.

Seeing Alaskan wildlife up close is a thrill for travelers of all ages, even for Van Dinther, who often takes groups in the front country where travelers might see 800-pound grizzlies. “It’s safe because we know what we’re doing as bear guides, and they’re habituated to humans,” she says. “But it’s a head trip to be just a few feet from something that can eat you.”

Saldang Village in Dolpo, Nepal

“It’s the mountains that bring people to Nepal,” says Leila Thompson, a veteran guide who has worked with Wilderness Travel since the early 1990s, “and it’s the people that bring them back. It’s such a welcoming place.” Western culture has yet to touch much of the country, especially places like Mustang or Dolpo, and Thompson finds it special to connect with locals living in traditional ways. “I think it’s important to travel without making attachments to your own culture—not saying, ‘Look how they live compared to how I live,’ but to engage with people on a human level. Share a cup of tea with them. Sit down with the nomadic herders and talk with them.” You’ve already traveled halfway around the world to meet them—stay awhile.

Japan is best explored on foot. Make sure your shoes are comfy and that you are fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet. 

This trip travels primarily on public transport, as it is so efficient and convenient in Japan. Fast trains are used to move between cities, as well as public buses and metro. In order to make travel easier, we have included luggage transfer (one piece of luggage) between destinations and recommend packing light. This means that for 2 nights of the trip, you will pack an overnight bag while the rest of your luggage is transported separately and safely.

WELCOME TO TOKYO! Welcome meeting & first taste of local cuisine

Konnichiwa ! Welcome to the quirky cultural capital of Japan. A must-see city for any traveler, Tokyo is the most populated in the world with incredible diversity and exceptional food and cultural experiences. It’s a meeting point for old world traditions and futuristic technology. Fly into one of Tokyo’s main international airports, Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) and hop in a pre-booked, shared shuttle to your hotel located in central Tokyo. We recommend arriving before 2pm so you arrive in time for our welcome dinner and first meeting at 6 pm. Tonight’s meal is at a local favorite chosen by your guide. It’s guaranteed to be an excellent first taste of Japan.

TOKYO Tsukiji Market food tour, sushi making class, Shibuya crossing, Meiji Shrine & Harajuku

Tokyo is a city of contrasts, and today we will see two polar opposites. Start your day by strolling through the bustling narrow aisles of Tsukiji Market and taste some of the staple ingredients in all of Japanese cuisine along with some classic street food. We’ll take some time to wander solo taking in the sites and smells of the market and shopping for kitchen wares and souvenirs. Once you’ve worked up an appetite again, we will learn how to make sushi in a private class and of course, taste all our hard work.

Next up is the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world – Shibuya Scramble, surrounded by the billboards you have seen in IG reels.

We’ll walk off our foodie day by embracing the tranquility of Meiji Shrine. Although it’s located in one of Tokyo’s busiest districts, this shrine is nestled inside such thick, beautiful gardens, you will forget the chaos of the city.

Next up is the Harajuku district, a quirky area full of cosplay shops, vintage clothing stores, and boba tea shops. Your guide will tell you the best spots to see, but you can also choose to wander solo, grab a snack, and people watch!

TOKYO Sensoji Temple, traditional tea ceremony & wagashi making, Yanaka & solo time 

After breakfast at the hotel, we will visit Sensoji Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple and one of the most colorful. After a stroll around the surrounding market, we will experience a different, softer and more traditional pace of the city. Yanaka is a charming, old neighborhood known for its love of stray cats and gentle spirituality, which you’ll see in small shrines, temples, and cemeteries. Tucked away is an old tea shop where we will enjoy Sado, the ancient matcha tea ceremony and try our hands at making wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets that accompany the tea. Wander the laid back streets of Yanaka at your own pace, perhaps opting in for a sake tasting, getting your fortune read, or shopping for cat-themed  souvenirs. The rest of the day is yours to explore Tokyo however you please.

TOKYO TO IZU Train to Izu, visit the local bamboo forest, go for a hike, & soak in your private onsen 

Say sayonara to Tokyo this morning and hop on a two hour bullet train to Izu. The orderly chaos of Tokyo train stations is a cultural experience all on its own. On a clear day, you’ll even get to see Mt. Fuji on the way. This tranquil hot-spring town provides a respite from the busy city and shows you a sweeter, slower side of Japan full of natural beauty. Your guide will take you to the town’s local bamboo forest and on an easy hike. Wander some of the shops and then soak in your own private onsen! Tonight your accommodation is a traditional Japanese ryokan that seamlessly blends modern comforts with timeless design. Each room boasts a private hot spring, and you can also indulge in the larger public onsen. Tonight you’ll enjoy dinner on-site, where you’ll be served up a feast of classic Japanese dishes.

Izu TO KYOTO Bullet train, Kenninji Temple & an afternoon with a maiko 

We’ll enjoy a beautiful breakfast before we hop on some local transport before our 3 hour ride on a  shinkansen,  or bullet train, to Kyoto. Grab some snacks or an ekiben, train station bento box, like the locals do to munch on for lunch later. Kyoto was founded in AD 794  as Heian-kyo – meaning ‘tranquility and peace capital’ – and was the capital of Japan for over 1000 years before the emperor and government relocated to Tokyo. Because of this, Kyoto is rich in history with over 2000 temples, shrines, and gardens. Now it is known for its flower town where the geiko (proper name for geisha) and maiko live. When we arrive, we’ll explore the rock gardens and exquisite dragon paintings of Kenninji Temple. Afterwards, we’ll join a real maiko (a geiko in training) for a very special and private experience. She’ll regale us with a dance performance and you’ll be able to ask her all your burning questions about her life before one more activity of her choosing. The rest of the evening is yours to roam the lantern lit streets. 

KYOTO Shrine & Temple hopping & a cooking class

Today we’ll visit one of Kyoto’s most popular shrines, Fushimi Inari, famous for its tunnel of 1000 scarlet torii gates. Afterwards, we’ll head to Sanju-sangen-do Temple, built in 1164 and full of over 1000 kannon (the godess of mercy) statues. In the afternoon, explore the iconic shopping streets that surround the famous Kiyomizudera temple and maybe stop for a tea. Before the day is up, you’ll get to try your hand at some traditional Japanese home cooking in an obanzai cooking class in a local woman’s home. 

Kyoto Solo day 

Today is a completely free day for you to explore Kyoto at your own pace. You could take a walk along the Kamogawa River and visit the neighboring street of shopping arcades that includes Nishiki Market and Teramachi dori, where traditional shops are sprinkled around. You could head northeast to the renowned Ginkaku-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion where you can take a peaceful walk down the Philosopher’s Path and discover more temples and sites along the way. There are so many things you could do and experience in this ancient capital, and your guide will be there to help you choose the perfect activity. 

KYOTO TO Koya-San Okunoin Cemetery, guided meditation & overnight at a Buddhist monastery

Today we are going back to nature to experience a whole new landscape and a more spiritual side of Japan. We’ll jump on a 2.5 hour train ride to Mt. Koya. Koya-Ryujin Quasi-National Park is one of Japan’s most sacred sites and our home for the night. This afternoon, we’ll stroll the Okunoin Cemetery, where you can find graves of historically important people next to some rather peculiar ones – imagine a gravestone in the shape of a rocket or a coffee cup. It’s like walking through another world! We’ll be spending the night at a traditional shukubo , or buddhist monastery, tucked into the mountain-side. This evening, we’ll join a meditation session before enjoying a Buddhist vegetarian meal provided by our hosts. 

Koya-San TO OSAKA Food tour, solo time & farewell dinner

This morning, you can choose to sleep in or participate in the monastery’s morning prayers. After breakfast, we have a 2.5 hour train ride to Osaka, Japan’s third-largest city and unofficial culinary capital, where the motto is ‘Kuidaore’ (‘eat until you drop’). We’ll arrive in Osaka around lunchtime, just in time to get your appetite going on a walking street food tour in the famous Dotonbori neighborhood, the city’s most popular shopping, food and entertainment district. At night, this district is lit by hundreds of neon lights and mechanized signs. Enjoy a few hours of free time before we meet back up for one last delicious Japanese feast together.

Arrival: Fly into one of Tokyo’s main international airports, Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND).

• On arrival you’ll take a shared shuttle bus going to central Tokyo where you check in to your hotel. The shared transfer is included when you arrive between 6am and 10pm on Day 1.
• If you arrive a day or two early,  the airport transfer is not included.  Please email us directly if you book flights outside this window so we can assist with arranging a transfer and an early night in the hotel.
• Our tour starts at 6pm, so we recommend that you arrive no later than 3pm on day 1 so that you have extra cushion time. However, we will schedule your shuttle anytime in between 6am and 10pm.

Departure: Kansai International Airport (KIX). You can leave anytime on the last day. Check out is at 10am.

• If you are extending your trip on your own and need to fly domestically (back to Tokyo), you can also fly out of Osaka International (Itami) Airport (ITM).

If you are from a country that does require a visa to enter Japan, you may be required to submit a few  documents along with your visa application form. SoFe is able to provide you with these documents upon request. Please request them from us and provide correct passport details and your email.

The itinerary is subject to change due for any reason – weather, unexpected cancellations, impromptu local opportunities, or surprise additions.

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory or you may be refused to join the tour. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation.

Here is the link to our favorite Travel Insurance provider for citizens of the USA and Canada. We recommend enrolling in travel insurance before you book your flights, in case you need to make any changes to your flight plans. 

There are size restrictions for luggage on Shinkansen trains. Luggage over 160–250 cm may require an additional USD 10 fee per train journey. Luggage over 251 cm will NOT be permitted on the Shinkansen trains at all. Please notify your group leader at the welcome meeting if your luggage is over 160–250 cm so they can help you make the necessary arrangements. Additionally, each piece of luggage cannot exceed 30 kilograms.

On Day 4, we will send your main luggage to Kyoto, as you will use a lot of public transportation over the next couple days. You will need to prepare a light overnight bag for your stay at a traditional ryokan. 1 piece of luggage is included in the luggage forwarding service. If you have extra luggage you’d like to be forwarded from Kyoto to Osaka, the cost will be about 1800-2300 JPY depending on the size. Your leader will be able to advise the exact amount whilst on your trip.

Because of this, we recommend packing 1 checked bag and another smaller backpack to use as your overnight bag.

All trips require a $250 Non-Refundable deposit at the time of booking. The final balance is due 60 days before departure.

Should I protect my trip with travel insurance?

This is a personal decision, however we recommend buying travel insurance. It’s more than lost luggage or flight delays, but it’s also protection in case you have to cancel your trip before departure due to an emergency. Always read your policy wording to review your specific coverage and to make sure that the policy is right for you.

Our luggage policy is based on physical space limitations of the vehicles we use and the requirement that all travelers be able to manage their own belongings without assistance.

It is best to travel as lightly as possible. Most travelers regret when they have packed too much. You may bring one suitcase plus a small shoulder bag/day pack/purse. Maximum suitcase size: 24 inches in height as measured from the FLOOR to the top of the retracted handle. This is the size of a bag that fits into the overhead bins of aircraft. Suitcases larger than this will not fit in the Mercedes Sprinter; please don’t bring them.

The weight of your bag should not exceed 30 pounds. Each guest is responsible for managing their luggage and will take their belongings from the van to the Hotel room and then bring it back to the van for loading.

What if I arrive late and miss a part of the trip?

We regret that no refunds can be made for absences from a trip, including experiences such as missed meals or sightseeing.

Can I book extra nights of hotel accommodation before or after my tour?

Customer service is at the core of giving tours and guests an innate power to leave a bad review, or withhold a tip from a guide.  Additionally, there’s often pressure from tour operators to ‘do whatever it takes’ to get that 5-star review.

Women tour guides in many cultures carry an additional layer of pressure when there’s an expectation to be warm, accommodating, and nurturing. This can be challenging to navigate, making it difficult for female tour guides to set boundaries when a guest, vendor, or colleague makes them uncomfortable.

It’s unfortunately common for female tour guides to feel unsupported in navigating these difficult situations. While not often brought up, many guides I’ve spoken with one-on-one have the same stories: The solo-guest that made the tour feel like a date, being flirted with by a guest and then subjected to the anger of their partner, unwanted advances from a vendor, there’s more but I digress…

These situations shouldn’t–and cannot–be the reality, as a travel professional you can support and empower your female guides with a few simple actions. Start here:

1. Initiate and actualize company protocol

1. define for your team what is acceptable and what is not.

As obvious as it sounds, you need to let your team know that it is NOT ok for any of them to be made uncomfortable by a guest, vendor, or fellow employee.  Be specific and have a clear plan for your guides to follow (see next step).

Everyone will draw their boundaries differently so the statement could be something along the lines of, “We will not tolerate any abuse of our guides in any way. If someone is making you uncomfortable, then it is inappropriate behavior.”

While this isn’t an article on sexual harassment specifically, you’ll also want to be aware of your local laws as they are different in each country.

2. Create a simple emergency plan

When your guide is feeling uncomfortable, they should know exactly what to do.  The plan should be short and realistic for a guide to action.

Don’t be scared of being strict with the consequences. In this exercise, your guides are your guests so focus on what will make them feel cared for. Remember that this is for extreme situations and rarely will guides go through all the steps.

Every company will have a different plan depending on your team, but it could be something like:

Step 1- Remove yourself from the situation by ‘going to the bathroom’ or ‘stepping out to call the next vendor’ and call your manager to let them know what’s going on Step 2- Let the guest know that their behavior is not acceptable Step 3- If the behavior continues, tell the guest that they will have to leave the tour Step 4- If the guest pushes back, call your manager in front of guest Step 5- If needed, end the tour and tell remaining guests that they will be refunded

3. Run regular training sessions for your guides.

Your guides should feel confident with each step of your plan. “Letting the guest know that their behavior is not acceptable” is not something that will come easily for all guides.  They will need ideas, scripts, and practice.

Role-playing is a fantastic training technique to help your guides try out different solutions to see what works best for them, you can have guides come up with different situations that might come up (making them ‘hypothetical’ is a great way for guides to anonymously share things that have happened to them) and brainstorm different solutions.  What works for one guide might not work for another.

For example, if the bad behavior escalates to a point where the guide needs to kick a guest off the tour (after trying several methods to diffuse the situation), there might be different strategies for how to do that.  One guide might have no issue stopping the tour.  However, another guide might feel more comfortable telling the guest that they’ve suddenly become sick and can no longer continue the tour.  It’s helpful for guides to practice, outlaid, different solutions to see what works for them and to commit it to muscle memory so it isn’t as scary in the moment.

2. Make a Safe Space Policy

Simply put, a Safe Space Policy defines exactly what behavior is untolerated. You should have two slightly different versions: An external version for guests (which can live on your website, your T&Cs linking to it) and an internal one for guides.

The Policy can state publicly that you are committed to your tours, and company, being a space where everyone feels comfortable and included.

3. Facilitate female-led conversation

Are there women in positions of power on your team?  You’ll want your female team members to weigh in throughout these processes, though it can be harder for them to feel comfortable sharing when there’s a male manager leading the project.

If you’re a small team of one, you could reach out to fellow solopreneurs who are female.  You can pool resources and have training and conversations for both of your teams together.  Or maybe you have a guide who already stands out as a team leader and could be involved in facilitating.

Another excellent practice is to provide a space for your female guides, away from managers, to share their stories.  A simple way to do this in a way that doesn’t exclude anyone is to organize optional social hang-outs or happy hours for your team with different themes (bonus: This is great for team building in general).  One month you could have a ‘foodie-themed’ hang-out at a local food truck park, the next month a get-together at a museum, and the next month a ‘female-power-happy-hour’ at a bar.  It’s great for your female guides to all be together in a casual setting as this is where these conversations are had.

Supporting women tour leaders takes intentional thought, but it’s imperative to create safe spaces for women to pursue their passions. The safer women feel, the more likely they are to be guides for your business; the more women you have guiding your tours, the better experience your travelers will have, seeing a destination through a woman’s eyes offers a unique perspective.

Barcelona, Spain

With a visit to Barcelona , immerse yourself in the local culture at your leisure, whether you want to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants or go cheer at a football (soccer) game. Writer Mona Gable says, "Barcelona is a place of wonder − medieval neighborhoods, sunny beaches, and world-class museums, not to mention Antoni Gaudí's celebrated architecture." She enjoyed exploring the Mediterranean port city, especially because of its walkability and easy-to-navigate transportation system with metro lines and buses. She also noted feeling safe on her own: "As a female traveler, I felt perfectly at ease wandering many neighborhoods alone, even at late hours, when Catalans famously dine out."

Travel tip: Gable says it's best to avoid touristy Las Ramblas – Barcelona's main thoroughfare – except to see La Boqueria, the city's legendary food market.

Botswana is well known for African wildlife safaris , where travelers might encounter elephants, zebras, rhinos, lions and cheetahs while glamping in luxury tents and dining on gourmet food. "Wildlife travel offers an outstanding combination of camaraderie, safety and autonomy," says Darcie Smith, owner of Great Expeditions Travel . She recommends Botswana's green season (November to March) for solo female travelers; at this time of year the single supplement surcharge is waived at many safari camps, which offers an excellent value and means you're more likely to meet other solo travelers. It is also peak season for birding, and you'll find plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife in the lush landscape.

Many camps will send someone to meet guests upon arrival to help you navigate airports or transfers. In Smith's experience, camp guests are also escorted to their rooms at night, for an added wildlife safety element. "Solo female travelers can enjoy daily shared safari activities in intimate camps that encourage social gatherings with full independence to design the itinerary around what's best for you," she says.

Travel tip: Smith recommends making your social media accounts private when you travel so strangers can't track your location as well as learning about the customs of your destination. "This will help avoid accidentally coming across as forward or flirtatious based on local standards," she explains. "For example, while long eye contact may be considered a sign of self-confidence or being polite at home, it may come across as flirtatious in your new destination."

Picture yourself indulging in pizza and gelato, visiting world-famous museums, touring picturesque wineries, and shopping at designer boutiques – all of that is at your fingertips in Italy , writer Martha McCully's go-to travel destination. "Italians want to share their culture and it's part of their personality to welcome you," she says. "Plus, the food and wine are outrageously divine."

The idea that traveling solo means you will be alone is a misconception, according to McCully. "It's simply not true," she says. "Book a group tour at your destination, or DM a friend from your past on Instagram, which is what I did in Bologna." There are plenty of unique ways to meet fellow travelers in Italy; she recommends signing up for a cooking class in Bologna through Taste of Italy, a food tour by Curious Appetite or a painting class with Plein Air Tuscany. "The idea is you will be with like-minded travelers and someone else is doing all the organizing," McCully explains.

Travel tip: McCully suggests sticking to your wellness routine while on the road to keep healthy habits. "I like to take my rituals with me," she says. "When I ground myself with what I know makes me feel good physically and mentally, it's like I'm living in another country, not just visiting."

With glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls and hot springs galore, the dramatic landscapes of Iceland make it a must-visit destination. The "Land of Fire and Ice" is also known for puffins, its Viking history and women's empowerment, with the country's reputation as a champion of gender equality.

"Iceland is a favorite destination for female solo travelers because it is easily one of the safest countries in the world," says Jenny Ly, professional travel blogger at Go Wanderly . Iceland has one of the world's lowest crime rates and no animal predators dangerous to humans – just prepare for challenging weather and exercise caution if you plan to do any driving. Ly's itinerary recommendations include whale watching, with nearly a dozen types of whales navigating Icelandic waters; visiting Vatnajökull Glacier's ice caves; and chasing the northern lights in the darker months (October to April).

Travel tip: Ly encourages solo female travelers to not let the lack of a travel companion prevent them from exploring the world. "It can be both empowering and rewarding for women to travel solo, at least once in their life," she says. "While traveling alone can be riskier than traveling with others, it can also be more fun and gratifying." Her tip is to always be aware of your surroundings.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

While some women may shy away from traveling to Mexico due to safety concerns, travel blogger Jeanine Romo of lewildexplorer.com , who has ventured solo to many countries, recommends visiting the charming town of San Miguel de Allende . "I decided to go on my own and had such a wonderful time," she says. "The people are friendly, the hospitality is amazing, and there are so many things to do if you love art, incredible food, and incredible architecture." San Miguel de Allende is a great option for women travelers because the city center is easily walkable and Uber is available, which Romo says made her feel safe because she could always call a ride.

Travel tip: For women traveling by themselves, Romo advises doing research on transportation options (such as local buses, metro lines and ride-sharing app availability) before you arrive. "I like to know how walkable the city I'm visiting is," says Romo. "This helps me feel so much more confident when navigating a new city."

From pristine beaches on the North Island to snowy mountains on the South Island – and all kinds of geological wonders in between – the diversity of New Zealand is a major draw for tourists. Travel blogger Nina Ragusa of whereintheworldisnina.com enjoys visiting because of the welcoming culture, outdoor adventure and feeling of safety. "Traveling New Zealand as a solo woman is quite easy, and if it's your first trip solo, this would be a good country to start in," she says. Ragusa spent a month camping in a van by herself and said she never had to worry about her safety, even in more remote areas. "I went on hikes solo, some of them deep into the mountains for miles and miles, and was either alone or passing other tourists or friendly kiwis to wave hello to," she says. Ragusa adds that New Zealand is not the cheapest travel destination, but her personal recommendation for saving money on longer trips here is to rent – or buy and later sell – a van to live in.

"El Calafate, Argentina, was the destination that seemed the most off-putting in my imagination, but became the trip with the most adventure, awe-inspiring beauty and ease," she says.

Travel tip: Gillum-Thomas recommends a stay at the América del Sur Hostel Calafate, saying she appreciated the clean accommodations and interesting guests.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

If you dream of a getaway that includes picturesque beaches and crystal-clear water, Croatia is the perfect spot to explore. In Dubrovnik , the ancient city walls and medieval architecture of Old Town , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set a particularly gorgeous scene when the sun goes down. Tamara Williams, owner of solo female travel-focused blog My Elated Odyssey , says the unmatched beauty of the surrounding sea and mountains is only one reason to plan a trip here.

"The locals are some of the nicest people I have ever met," Williams says. "They truly made it feel like a second home. They spoke English well, so no need to worry about a language barrier." She adds that this Balkan country is also considerably more affordable than destinations in Western Europe.

Travel tip: For solo female travelers, Williams suggests staying in the Lapad neighborhood or near Old Town. "Both are full of cafes, bars and shopping to keep you busy," she says.

Svalbard, Norway

You can't go wrong in Norway , with breathtaking fjords, fascinating wildlife, scenic railways, outdoor adventure and the chance to glimpse the northern lights . Jurga Rubinovaite, founder of the travel blog Full Suitcase , says you won't want to miss Svalbard: a Norwegian archipelago located approximately 800 miles from the North Pole. "It is one of the most unique nature destinations in the world," she says. "Despite being so far north in the Arctic, it's extremely easy to visit and is also a great and safe destination for solo female travelers."

The main town, Longyearbyen, is the focal point of activities in Svalbard, which range from hiking and boat tours in the summer to winter pursuits such as ice cave visits and snowmobiling. "Because of the presence of polar bears, everything you do in Svalbard requires booking a guided tour, so you are always in safe hands," Rubinovaite explains. "Longyearbyen town itself is very lively and safe, with lots of accommodations, restaurants, shops, and a few museums, all within easy walking distance from each other."

Travel tip: For women traveling alone, Rubinovaite advises thorough research in advance of your trip to this Arctic locale; staying in hotels, rather than private accommodations; and booking guided tours or looking for a travel buddy when venturing out to very remote places.

Experienced traveler Kelie Fiala of the Vacations Planned blog ranks this European country at the top of her list for solo travel spots. "Many attractions in Ireland are wonderful for solo travelers because they offer peaceful spots to stop and enjoy the gorgeous views, but also provide plenty of opportunities to meet friendly people at cafes and other points of interest," she says.

Fiala appreciates the nightlife and music scene of Ireland as much as the history and scenery. She suggests experiencing some of the country's pubs, even if you're a woman traveling alone, since you'll almost always find live music and friendly people. "Even if you start out by yourself, you'll easily find that you're having great conversations in no time," she says.

Travel tip: Fiala warns that for solo travelers, especially women, it's best to be careful how much you drink and leave the situation if you ever feel uncomfortable. But she also encourages women to not be afraid to have a chat. "You could hear some great stories, and make a new friend," she says.

Beautiful beaches, delicious food, friendly people, exotic animals and floating markets are just some of the incredible things that you can experience in Thailand . Loredana Gogoescu, head of content for Destguides.com , says she felt safe in Thailand as soon as she arrived. "Thai people are hospitable and kind," she says. "Moreover, as a solo traveler, I was surprisingly never alone. I had to book a private room for myself at one point just to get a breather, as I was constantly meeting new people!"

Travel tip: If you're apprehensive about exploring a new place on your own, especially if you've never traveled abroad before, Gogoescu recommends sorting out all the logistics like accommodations and transportation in advance so it's easier to acclimate once you get there. She adds, "If you're afraid of being alone, join different apps like Bumble and Facebook groups for the destination you're traveling to, to see if you can match up with other solo female travelers who will be in the area at the same time as you."

Netherlands

Nailah Hayward of TheresSoMuchToSee.com says the Netherlands is a superb option for first-time solo female travelers, based on ease of transportation, overall safety, the variety of things to do and other factors. "The Netherlands comes out high on all of these areas," she says. "And after multiple visits to the country, traveling through big cities and small towns, I always felt extremely safe." With the country's extensive train system, in addition to local trams and bike lanes, navigating the Netherlands by yourself doesn't pose too great a burden. Hayward also appreciates the ease of communicating with locals as an English speaker, since most people speak English in addition to Dutch.

"Whether you are into the arts scene, outdoor activities, luxury experiences, cultural exploration or culinary delights, the Netherlands has a huge variety of activities to dive into," Hayward says. "All of these elements make the Netherlands a place that I enthusiastically recommend for solo women travelers."

Travel tip: Don't carry cash. Hayward says most transactions can be done electronically, so there's no need for frequent trips to the ATM.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Luxury family travel influencer Irina Claire Bromberg suggests Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands as a top spot for solo female travel, partially because of its high safety rating from the U.S. Department of State. There's also no shortage of activities in this Caribbean destination, with Bromberg calling Stingray City a must. "The stingrays are peaceful and gentle," she says. "They glide along the ocean floor and you're free to observe and even play with them in their natural habitat." She also recommends soaking up some sun at the renowned Seven Mile Beach .

Grand Cayman is also a foodie paradise, according to Bromberg. "The vibrant dishes are as tasty as they are exciting, representing the fascinating mix of cultures and traditions that make the island so unique," she says. Her suggestions for food to try include the classic Cayman-style lobster, coconut shrimp and Johnny cakes.
