GT-approved tasting tours of Tasmania
When you think of Tasmania what springs to mind? For us, it’s regional restaurants , boutique wineries, and local farm gates set against a backdrop of rugged coastlines and pristine views. The abundance of rich culinary experiences travellers can only find down under makes the island state a coveted destination for any foodie. Inspired to plan a last-minute spring holiday? Take note of our top tasting spots in Tasmania.
No trip to Tasmania is complete without a vineyard visit, and La Villa Wines is a great place to start.
Venture to vineyards
If you have a penchant for cool-climate wine, you’re in the right region. Surrounded by dolerite-capped mountains, Tasmania’s wine areas are abundant with crowd-pleasing grape varieties, from pinot noir to sauvignon blanc.
La Villa Wines
Set on five hectares, this boutique vineyard brings la dolce vita to Tasmania’s north west coast. Inspired by their time living abroad in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, La Villa Wines owners Gail and Marcus produce a variety of delicious wines from low yield premium fruit. Saluti!
Pooley Wines
“Tasmania is special because it’s surrounded by ocean,” says winemaker Anna Pooley. “We have some really exciting and diverse areas for producing wine in Tasmania, where even slight differences in climate equate to a fabulous spectrum of wines.” Burrowed in the heart of the Coal River Valley, this historic cellar door is open every day for wine tastings.
Mayfield Estate
The only thing more impressive than Mayfield Estate’s cool-climate wines is their majestic view from Tasmania’s east coast. With their cellar door opening in 2022 at Little Swanport, the boutique winery looks north to Dolphin Sands and south to the Tasman Sea. This vineyard visit is as much a visual feast as a drinking joy.
Discover dining destinations
With a reputation as a flavour-filled, foodie lover’s heaven, Tasmania boasts some of the country’s hottest restaurants. From design-savvy interiors to innovative menus, here are our top three.
Homestead Restaurant
Freshly shucked Tasmanian Pacific oysters, grass-fed eye fillet, abalone from the surrounding sea, and heirloom vegetables planted by small growers in Launceston… have we piqued your interest (or appetite) yet? Based at Piermont Retreat near Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast, Homestead Restaurant celebrates the region’s diverse flavours in a seasonally inspired menu.
If you’ve an appetite for romance, list this intimate dining experience on your itinerary. The interiors pair warm Tasmanian oak with panoramic views, while everything on the set menu is “cooked over coals or kissed with fire in some way,” according to head chef Timothy Hardy. Designed to stand in harmony with the Turrakana / Tasman Peninsula landscape, this small-scale restaurant sources seasonal produce from organic farmers or their onsite orchards and vegetable gardens.
Black Cow Bistro
Housed in an art deco butchers shop in Launceston, this inviting bistro specialises in grass-fed Tasmanian beef. Each dish is crafted around fresh, local produce and seafood, while the working cellar is stacked with cool-climate Tassie drops and rare bottles from around the world.
A different way to discover Tasmania: Wilderness, a sense of discovery and unparalleled taste on an Unearthed Chefs Tour.
Country road trip
Adopt Tasmania’s slow pace of life and indulge in an immersive country experience. Think stopping at roadside stalls with homegrown fruit, meeting local makers, taking a cooking class or embarking on a foraging tour.
Sirocco South foraging tours
Cook and forager Mic Giuliani takes the paddock to plate philosophy to new heights. Join one of his foraging tours to learn how to identify local flavours and handpick ingredients for a long-table, six-course dining experience overlooking Frederick Henry Bay (just east of Hobart).
Hinton Bay Kitchen
Return home from your trip across the Bass Strait with a new recipe. Hinton Bay Kitchen’s cooking school offers private classes at a beautiful home overlooking Hinton Bay (just north of Launceston). Surrounded by water views of the Tamar River and vines of Hinton Bay vineyard, the setting is just as charming as the kitchen itself. Learn about Tasmania’s food culture in a light-filled kitchen.
Unearthed Chefs Tour
Looking for an incredible experience in Tasmania’s north west? Join a full day of explorations on the ‘Tasting Trail Cradle to Coast’ — a food and drink trail designed to showcase the region’s finest produce and artisanal producers. On the Unearthed Chefs Tour, explore a saffron farm, enjoy wine tasting, visit a truffle farm, indulge in a long lunch, and much more.

7 of Tasmania's best food and wine trails
These great road trips offer a taste of gourmet Tasmania, from reverently produced cheeses to its wines, beers and whiskies.
By Andrew Bain
Tasmania 's international culinary reputation is well deserved. The island state produces an astonishing array of excellent produce, from beer and berries to pork and pinot noir. These regional routes head to the source of Tasmania 's famous flavours.
Delicious taste of Tasmania
Tasmanian cider trail.
Once known as the Apple Isle for its superb crops, Tasmania continues to celebrate the apple with the Tasmanian Cider Trail . The trail links ten cider producers across the state, from the southern Huon Valley , where 80 per cent of the state's apples are grown, to cideries in the north around the wine-producing Tamar Valley . There are also detours to other cider producers in the capital city of Hobart , as well as upstream from Hobart in the Derwent Valley, and in the apple-producing northern town of Spreyton, just over a one-hour drive north-west of Launceston . The drive from the Huon Valley to the Tamar Valley is about 300 kilometres (187 miles).
Tasmanian Beer Trail
Breweries abound in Tasmania , and are the focus of the Tasmanian Beer Trail , which brings together more than 20 breweries on one hop-filled journey around the state. Begin in the capital city of Hobart, driving along the state's beach-lined east coast and through the northern cities of Launceston and Devonport and you'll get to taste a great variety of hoppy creations. The trail incorporates tours of the state's two largest breweries - the Cascade Brewery in Hobart and Boag's Brewery in Launceston - as well as a number of small craft brewers that offer intimate tastings.
Tasmanian Whisky Trail
Tasmania produced the world's best single malt whisky in 2014, and this trail connects almost 20 distilleries throughout the island. As well as providing plenty of whisky tastings, it gives you the chance to take in the likes of the former convict prison at Port Arthur and postcard-worthy beaches along the east coast. The drive from the capital city of Hobart around to the northern town of Burnie , returning past a trio of distilleries in the rural Midlands, covers about 900 kilometres (559 miles).
Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail
Cradle Mountain is one of Tasmania's biggest natural drawcards, and sits in a region that tastes as good as it looks. The Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail extends across the north-west of Tasmania, from the city of Launceston to the town of Smithton , taking in wineries, restaurants, providores, cheese makers, olive growers and more. The straight journey is little more than 200 kilometres (124 miles), but it's worth stretching it over a few days to experience and taste it fully. There are more than 20 producers along the way, as well as farmers markets in Launceston and Ulverstone , and some great accommodation options linked to the trail.
Made on Bruny Island Gourmet Trail
Long and spectacular Bruny Island is like a snapshot of all things great about Tasmanian food, distilled into one smaller island. The Made on Bruny Island traveller trail passes many of Bruny's most spectacular sights, including beaches, cliffs and wildlife, as it connects the island's terrific tastes. A full day itinerary will take you past a famed cheese maker, an oyster farm, a whisky house, and a berry farm where you can pick your own fruit. For a gourmet trip mixed with walks and exclusive accommodation, book yourself onto the three-day Bruny Island Long Weekend tour. Bruny Island is reached on a short car-ferry crossing from the town of Kettering, about a 30-minute drive from the Tasmanian capital of Hobart.
Great Eastern Drive
The Great Eastern Drive runs spectacularly along Tasmania's eastern edge from the quiet beach town of Orford to the fishing centre of St Helens. The 180-kilometre (112-mile) drive is as beautiful as any in Australia, but one of its prime attractions is the opportunity to enjoy the produce that comes from the surrounding land and sea. North of the holiday seaside town of Swansea , the drive threads between a handful of vineyards. On Freycinet Peninsula, there's fresh-from-the-leases seafood at the Freycinet Marine Farm , while further ocean treats await at the dockside seafood punts at the drive's end in St Helens.
Tamar Valley Wine Route
A driving loop through Tasmania's foremost wine region, the Tamar Valley Wine Route links almost 30 cellar doors north of the likeable city of Launceston. The circuit covers about 170 kilometres (106 miles), running along both banks of the Tamar River. Most vineyards have cellar doors with regular opening hours, while several also offer platters of local produce to complement the wines. The signature wine variety of the region is Pinot Noir, but there are also wonderful sparkling wines, Chardonnays, Rieslings and even fortified wines to taste along the drive.

Some options include Glacier Rock platform, the Boat Shed, Pencil Pine Waterfall walk, the Enchanted Walk & Weindorfers Forest walk.

Day 3 - The Midlands to Hobart (B, L)
First up we have a guided tour of Australia’s 3rd oldest city - Launceston. Enjoy a morning stroll at the lovely Cataract Gorge, a fantastic urban wilderness only minutes from the CBD and the jewel in Launceston’s crown. A driving tour around town will take in some of the most iconic old buildings and structures including the Penny Royal complex, the King Bridge, the Post office and the Holy Trinity Anglican Church among others.
Heading south today we journey down Tasmania's Midlands HWY, a stunning drive through rolling countryside with fields of many different & colourful crops, grazing livestock and mountainous terrain in the background. A stop in Ross is first to see the beautiful old Ross Bridge - one of the prettiest in Tasmania. At Oatlands see perhaps Australia’s best collection of convict period sandstone buildings with over 90 old structures on display in the main street. The Callington Mill has recently been fully refurbished and the striking Windmill is definitely worth a short stroll and photograph.
A scenic drive further south will have us arrive in the Coal Valley for lunch at our favourite local vineyard. Enjoy wine tastings with your sample style platter of locally sourced produce. Our chosen vineyard today does not export wine to any restaurants or liquor stores anywhere in the country including Hobart, which is why we enjoy providing a local experience for our guests. From here we continue into Hobart to take in the Hobart waterfront and Battery Point areas, while viewing many of Hobart’s oldest convict built structures. Head to the summit of Tasmania's Mt Wellington (1271m) boasting spectacular panoramic views in every direction. For those travelling in the colder months we might be lucky enough to summit amongst drifts of white snow lining the road. Check-in tonight at our luxurious 4-star accommodation for the next 3 nights - the Movenpick Hobart.
Day 4 – Port Arthur & The Tasman Peninsula (B, L)
Today we explore the beautiful Tasman Peninsula and Tasman National Park area. First up though we stop at the township of Richmond. See the stone arch construction of the Richmond Bridge, built by the convicts in 1823 this is Australia’s oldest bridge still in operation.
A scenic morning drive will take us out of town towards the blue waters of the Tasmania National Park. Pirates Bay lookout is a great first up stop for coffee & morning snacks with views for miles along the rugged coast line.
The Tasman National Park boasts towering sea cliffs and a wealth of cultural history as we venture south. Learn about Eaglehawk Neck - the site of the infamous Dogline - as we cross onto the Tasman Peninsula. We then explore some of nature’s true wonders with short, scenic walks at Tasman’s Arch and Devils Kitchen. Continuing on we will lunch at the colourful Port Arthur Lavender Farm where guests can enjoy fantastic food and photograph the best lavender fields in Tasmania’s south.
Our afternoon activities will be a fully guided tour around the Port Arthur Historic Site. Explore many of the original buildings as we learn about the early convicts and the role they played in Tasmania’s history. Enter the convict Church, The Asylum and the Silent Prison to name a few. Learn about Point Puer (the juvenile boys prison), the Isle of the Dead graveyard and the Port Arthur timber industry while enjoying a short, scenic harbour cruise to view the site as incoming convicts would have. An early evening drive returns us to Hobart for another stay in comfortable and very central city lodgings.
Day 5 – Bruny Island (B, L)
Today is an adventure to Bruny Island - Hobart’s most famous day trip option. Guests have the choice of 2 different itineraries depending on how adventurous you feel or if you prefer land or water based activities. Both will offer a memorable excursion to this stunning little island.
Option 1. Bruny Island Traveller - A full day trip from Hobart, this is a spectacular tour with nature, wilderness, coast & heritage included. Taste your way across Bruny Island, visiting some of our renowned artisan producers of cheese, wine, beer, fudge, honey & oysters on an all inclusive, gourmet, wilderness adventure whilst discovering the spectacular scenery and cultural heritage of Tasmania's favourite island. Visit the iconic lookout at The Neck, walk through the ancient Mavista Rainforest and keep an eye out for rare white wallabies.
Option 2. Bruny Island Wilderness Cruise – For the more adventurous a full day tour of Bruny Island includes the amazing 3 hour fast boat cruise around rugged Tassie coastline. Experience the awesome power of the mighty Southern Ocean, towering cliffs and deep sea caves.
Encounter the regions remarkable wildlife, keeping a close lookout for sea eagles, dolphins, seals and a variety of sea birds. Amazing photographic opportunities abound. Trip includes pickup Hobart 7.45am, scenic guided bus tour and ferry crossing to Bruny Island, morning tea, 3 hour wilderness cruise, lunch and return to Hobart around 5.30pm.

Day 6 – Salamanca Markets & conclusion (B)
The world-famous Salamanca markets are held every Saturday and we wouldn’t want to miss them. After an included breakfast explore the market at your own leisure and sample the abundance of street foods. Wander the rows of market stalls displaying woodwork, arts & craft, fresh produce, coffee, wine, cooked foods and more. This is Tasmania’s most famous market and operates every Saturday for the entire year. Salamanca has a well preserved collection of convict built, sandstone buildings connected by narrow laneways, staircases and interesting little spaces to explore.
In addition to the markets, Salamanca area has fantastic art galleries, cafes and retail stores. You are free to discover the markets & surrounds at your leisure… perhaps a wander across the dock area or up into the quaint suburb of Battery Point?
This officially concludes your 6 Day Scenic Tasmania adventure. We are sure you will have gained a real taste and appreciation for this great little island. Thank you for joining us.
