88 Hours: America's Longest Scenic Bus Routes

Traveling the longest Greyhound bus routes in the USA is a 76 to 100-hour marathon, but it might be worth the trip.

  • Greyhound's Miami to Seattle bus route is a 4-5 day adventure with 45 stops and 5 bus changes, offering a unique way to cross the country.
  • Combining Greyhound, Jefferson Lines, and FlixBus, this long journey from coast to coast provides onboard entertainment, free Wi-Fi, and power outlets.
  • Although not the most scenic route, the trip takes passengers through the Appalachians, Great Plains, and Rocky Mountains before reaching Washington.

Imagine traveling by bus across the United States for five days straight. To most, this would seem like hell, but to some, it may be an adventure to tick off the bucket list. While there is extensive nostalgia for crossing the USA to the West Coast by train , buses also offer an experience of their own.

One of the longest bus routes one can take in the United States is traveling from Miami, Florida, to Seattle, Washington. Strap in for this 4-5 day intercity bus adventure across the Continental Divide that makes the longest flight in the world seem short.

Take An 88 To 100+ Hour Greyhound Bus From Coast To Coast

Greyhound offers some of the longest bus rides in the united states including from coast to coast routes.

This mammoth bus journey from Miami to Seattle is offered by Greyhound (now owned by FlixBus ). It is one of the longest bus rides in the United States and takes at least three days (typically it's a four-day adventure for bus enthusiasts).

The bus trip is provided by Greyhound. It has 45 stops and five bus changes. The exact routes vary depending on the exact route taken (there is a selection of varying routes from Miami to Seattle). Some routes take passengers through Orlando, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, and Buffalo, before reaching Seattle.

  • Most of the bus journeys listed by Checkmybus.com are around 100 hours and cost between $250 and $300 one way.

Example Bus Journey From Miami To Seattle:

  • Provider: Greyhound (owned by FlixBus)
  • Duration: 88 Hours
  • Cost: From $270

This route is mostly highway and Interstate driving. So, while there will be many stunning sights along the way, it is not a scenic route (and passengers can't just stop along the way). Some bus routes around the world are as scenic as they are significant , although this Greyhound bus may not be one of them.

Still, passengers will see the Appalachians, the Great Plains, and the northern Rocky Mountains. Once in Washington, there are plenty of things to see and do in Seattle (including exploring Mount Rainier).

Another option is to drive the longest road in the United States on the 3,365-mile-long Route 20 from Massachusetts to Oregon. Road trips can be both self-driving and taken by bus.

Greyhound's 'Shortest' 76-Hour Bus Trip From Miami To Seattle

The shortest bus trip takes around 76 hours and combines three bus companies.

The fastest trip offered by Greyhound takes 76 hours and 5 minutes with 5 transfers. The first transfer is in Atlanta and is 45 minutes long. This transfer is then followed by a 1-hour and 15-minute transfer in Chicago, a 3-hour and 15-minute transfer in Minneapolis, a 50-minute transfer in Billings (Montana), and a 1-hour and 50-minute transfer in Spokane Station (eastern Washington state).

Bus Segments:

  • Miami to Atlanta: 4 Stops (Greyhound)
  • Atlanta to Chicago: 8 Stops (Greyhound)
  • Chicago to Minneapolis: 7 Stops (Greyhound)
  • Minneapolis to Billings (Montana): 12 Stops (Jefferson Lines)
  • Billings (Montana) to Spokane: 5 Stops (Jefferson Lines)
  • Spokane to Seattle: 2 Stops (FlixBus)

Many of the buses feature free Wi-Fi, onboard entertainment, and power outlets. This particular route combines three bus brands: Greyhound, Jefferson Lines, and Flixbus.

Follow My Cheap Yet Epic Trail Across Vietnam And Cambodia By Train, Bus, Boat, And Bike

What to know of the three bus companies on the route, greyhound, jefferson lines, & flixbus all provide carriage for parts of the route from miami to seattle.

Greyhound was founded 110 years ago (in 1914) and now services 13 routes with its fleet of approximately 1,700 motorcoaches. Greyhound is perhaps the most famous intercity bus company in the United States.

  • Greyhound: Largest Intercity Bus Company in the USA
  • Jefferson Lines: Second-Largest Intercity Bus Company In USA
  • FlixBus: German Bus Company - Owns Greyhound

Greyhound was purchased by FlixBus in 2021. FlixBus is a large German intercity bus company that operates extensively throughout Europe. FlixBus is a giant that serves over 400,000 routes, and over 5,000 destinations, in over 40 countries.

Intercity bus travel is not so popular in the United States as buses are routinely out-competed by cars and airplanes. This is seen in the number of passengers FlexiBus carries in its main areas of operations. In 2022 it carried 38 million passengers in Europe, 13 million passengers in Turkey, and only 8 million in North America.

Jefferson Lines is a regional intercity bus company serving the Midwest and West of the United States. It operates in 14 states with its base in Minneapolis. It is the second-largest bus company in the nation and was founded over a hundred years ago in 1919. Unlike Greyhound, Jefferson Lines is not a FlixBus branded bus and FlixBus is only a ticket retailer.

All these bus companies combined offer a long-haul trip across the US that might be worth the scenic views, as long as you can get out at various stops to stretch your legs.

Is it safe to drive during the solar eclipse?

travel bus at

The upcoming solar eclipse will mean lots of folks looking to the skies on Monday.

That might raise a key question for you, especially if you expect to be on the road that day.

Is it safe to drive during the eclipse?

“Since they are such a rare occurrence, we don’t often think about how an eclipse might impact driving conditions due to the unique challenges it brings to roadway safety,” according to Katie Bower, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. “As the eclipse unfolds, and visibility decreases, drivers and pedestrians should be extra cautious, patient and alert to ensure everyone makes it home safely.”

Bower noted that “we’ve heard that many Michiganders are heading to Ohio to view the eclipse and we urge everyone who will be traveling to buckle up, slow down and drive for the conditions, so we can all enjoy this rare event safely with family and friends.”

Only a very small piece of Michigan, around Luna Pier , is expected to be in the so-called path of totality, but Michiganders elsewhere will still experience varying degrees of the spectacle.

It’s not safe to look at the sun with the naked eye , and for the vast majority of us it won’t be safe to watch any part of the eclipse without protective eyewear at any point.

But what happens when you’re on the road? For starters, do not try to watch the eclipse if you're driving.

What's the advice for driving during the eclipse?

Various agencies have been offering tips. Here’s what AAA Michigan recommends:

  • Keep your vehicle’s headlights on.
  • Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
  • Don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Don’t try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
  • Don’t pull over to the side of the road, highway or interstate to view the eclipse.
  • Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky.

A group focused on rail safety even put out its own advisory for Monday warning drivers and eclipse watchers to “stay clear of railroad tracks and trains.”

Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt advised in a video safety message that “this rare event may be a once in a lifetime for some but could have widespread impacts on the traveling public, so please plan ahead to arrive early and if you can, stay put to avoid traffic congestion. … Don’t have an eclipse in judgment. Be safe.”

What's the data show?

There doesn’t appear to be a ton of data on how eclipses affect road safety. The data around what for Michigan was a partial solar eclipse in August 2017 showed a decrease in crashes based on activity for the same day two weeks before and afterward, according to the state Office of Highway Safety Planning.

But circumstances elsewhere were more directly affected by the event. Places that saw a total eclipse that year attracted lots of visitors and extra road activity as evidenced by a photo from the Wyoming Department of Transportation included in a Federal Highway Administration document about eclipse preparations. That photo showed bumper-to-bumper traffic on a rural highway.

A research letter posted on the Journal of the American Medical Association website highlighted national data for the 2017 eclipse, which would include those areas that experienced a total eclipse. It found an increase in fatal crashes at that time.

“In absolute terms, this averaged to 1 extra crash-involved person every 25 minutes and 1 extra crash fatality every 95 minutes,” according to the letter.

The study cited increases in traffic, travel on unfamiliar roads, speeding to arrive on time, driver distraction, viewing from unsafe roadside locations and drug- or alcohol-induced impairment related to eclipse celebrations beyond just changes in lighting as factors.

More than 200 million people are within driving range of the upcoming eclipse the letter noted, highlighting the potential for out-of-the-ordinary traffic safety issues next week.

SEPTA bus overhaul will not exacerbate inequalities, new study says, despite critics’ concerns

The study measured the number of jobs a rider could reach within 30 and 45 minutes and average travel times to the nearest hospital, rec center, library, and closest supermarkets.

The SEPTA route 7 bus drive along Oregon Avenue.

A new independent analysis of SEPTA ’s bus network overhaul contradicts a major concern raised by critics of the project: that proposed service changes would reinforce transportation inequities.

The latest complete version of SEPTA’s bus network overhaul, a plan developed over the last three years, would deliver increased access to opportunity or preserve existing levels of access for most Philadelphia riders compared with current routes, according to an equity analysis by the nonprofit TransitCenter think tank.

Overall, the study found that the December 2023 draft of the Bus Revolution would result in minor changes, up or down, in the numbers of jobs, hospitals, libraries, rec centers and supermarkets that riders could reach and travel times needed to get there.

“The way I read it, Bus Revolution is neither as bad as anyone fears nor as good as some people would like it to be,” said Connor Descheemaker, coalition manager for the nonprofit advocacy group Transit Forward Philadelphia.

And SEPTA planners were constrained by a mandate to keep the route reorganization cost-neutral, meaning that every boost in bus service in one area had to be balanced by a cut somewhere else, a kind of mathematical taffy pull.

“The only way to more substantively improve access is to invest money on more service hours,” Descheemaker said.

Access to hospitals, groceries, and rec centers

New York-based TransitCenter conducted the equity comparison analysis of the December 2023 Bus Revolution plan and the current network for Transit Forward Philadelphia.

The researchers used several periods throughout the week to show differences and similarities.

They found average travel times to the nearest hospital, rec center, library, and three supermarkets fell within one minute of current times for all demographics measured in both the proposed and current network.

The analysis also measured the number of jobs a rider could reach within 30 and 45 minutes of their starting point at different times in each network.

It found some improvements in access to jobs under the Bus Revolution Plan, including:

Asian residents would be able to reach more jobs within 30 minutes on weekday afternoons and evenings than today.

The number of jobs accessible within 30 minutes on weekday mornings increased across all demographics. Notably, one of the biggest improvements was for households without access to a car.

Black residents would see an increase number of jobs accessible within 45 minutes on weekend afternoons .

Outcomes were broken out for white, Black, Asian and Hispanic people , as well as people age 65 and over. The study also looked at access for households living in poverty and people who don’t own a car.

It relied on population demographics and employment data from the U.S. Census, TransitCenter said.

Descheemaker cautioned that the analysis looks at bus service in the city and does not cover Bus Revolution changes proposed for the other four counties in SEPTA’s service area.

Allocating limited resources

Like many peers, SEPTA faces an operating deficit, $240 million in its case, as federal pandemic aid sunsets.

The transit agency last week concluded a series of eight final community meetings and one virtual meeting after City Council members asked for more time to engage their Black, brown and lower-income constituents on the plan.

SEPTA paused the project in February, just as its board was poised to adopt the final draft of route changes after more than two years of public question-and-answer sessions and surveys.

“There were areas that kind of fell through the cracks a little bit” earlier, said Dan Nemiroff, SEPTA’s director of service planning. He said the latest meetings reached people who might not ordinarily come to such events, thanks to Council members who helped organize and publicize them.

A SEPTA map shows the agency conducted widespread outreach during the redesign process, but with gaps in neighborhoods west of Broad Street like Strawberry Mansion , Brewerytown -Sharswood, Nicetown - Tioga , and Fairmount . The areas range from more affluent, to gentrifying, to historically disinvested.

While acknowledging the difficulty of making a budget-neutral plan, SEPTA officials maintain the result will still serve riders better than the current network does.

“It better allocates those limited resources of bus hours and miles to when people are using the system, said Deputy Chief Officer Colin Foley. “It’s no longer a 9-to-5 a.m./p.m. commute as much as it used to be.”

SEPTA has already made some changes to the December version of the plan, the fourth draft, in response to questions and concerns expressed in the recent round of meetings, officials said.

For instance, planners have committed to keeping Route 32 in its current alignment — a priority that Strawberry Mansion residents have pushed for over a number of months. The route had been marked for elimination.

Route 32 travels from Roxborough down to North Philadelphia, goes through Strawberry Mansion and Fairmount, serves the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and then proceeds down South Broad Street to South Philly .

Route 16 would be kept at its current alignment, running from Cheltenham, straight down Broad Street, to its end point at City Hall, Nemiroff said. The earlier proposal would have shortened it. Route 57 also would be kept as is, Nemiroff said.

New bus-only signal saves time for trimet riders.

April 12, 2024 by Mark Miller

Transit signal priority makes bus travel faster and more reliable by moving our riders around traffic

Bus-only signal at SE Hawthorne/11th, part of TriMet and the City of Portland's transit signal priority (TSP) system.

No one likes being stuck in traffic.

For bus riders, however, TriMet has a workaround. In partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation, we’re making it easier for buses to move through intersections — and past heavy traffic. That means riders can reach their destination faster on the bus than they would by driving!

A bus-only signal is now online at the intersection of Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and 11 th Avenue in Portland. That signal is part of a network of recent improvements on the Southeast Hawthorne and Madison Street couplet, benefiting four popular bus lines.

This new system saves riders in this corridor nearly 30 seconds, on average, every time they go by bus. How is that possible? We use cutting-edge technology that reduces the amount of time buses have to wait at red lights. Powered by artificial intelligence, transit signal priority is changing the game for bus travel on Portland’s east side.

The science behind the signal

Just like every other vehicle on the road, TriMet buses have to contend with rush-hour jams and other traffic delays. Our buses share the road with passenger vehicles, semi-trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, school buses, motorized scooters and more.

Our buses can’t avoid traffic altogether. With transit signal priority, however, traffic signals get an automated alert when a bus is approaching. This changes the timing of the light, giving the bus a green light to proceed. Seven signals along Hawthorne/Madison have now been improved with this technology. These signals communicate with buses and each other using a cloud-based network, and they harness the power of artificial intelligence to keep buses on the move.

A bus-only signal, like the one at Hawthorne and 11 th , can even allow buses to safely proceed after the light turns red for other vehicles, or give them the go-ahead before the light turns green for everyone else. Thanks to this bus-only signal, our buses can move ahead of the traffic flow and serve the stop at Southeast 12 th Avenue.

The signal is designed with safety in mind. Having two identical sets of lights, one for buses and one for everyone else, would be confusing. Instead, the bus-only signal displays simple icons. Whether the main light is green, yellow or red , our bus operators can see the icon displayed by that bus-only signal and know whether to stop or go.

Altogether, transit signal priority means riders spend less time sitting in traffic, and it means buses arrive on time more often, too.

Time savings

Transit signal priority along Hawthorne/Madison, between 12 th Avenue and Grand Avenue, builds on the success of the transit-only Rose Lanes that are painted on these major roads.

Together, these innovations reduce the amount of time that buses on Line 6-Martin Luther King Jr Blvd , Line 10-Harold St , Line 14-Hawthorne/Foster and Line 70-12th/NE 33rd Ave — lines with a combined weekly ridership of more than 68,500 — have to wait due to red lights and congestion, even when traffic is heavy.

As we’ve implemented transit signal priority in this corridor, we’ve seen time savings upward of 20 seconds per trip. In some cases, it’s closer to 40 seconds. Those savings add up, helping to keep our buses on time and get riders to their destination faster throughout the day.

We know transit signal priority works, because we’ve seen it in action on TriMet FX™. Our Frequent Express line, FX2-Division , saves up to six minutes in each direction thanks to a transit signal priority network, as well as Rose Lanes along Southeast Division Street. There are 57 traffic signals in this network, including 11 bus-only signals, along Division Street from Cleveland Avenue in Gresham to Southeast 11 th Avenue in Portland.

Working together with our local partners, we plan to add transit signal priority in other congestion-prone parts of our service area, making bus a better alternative to driving for more residents.

Bay Area Rapid Transit’s red line is out of service this weekend while crews work to upgrade portions of the track, the transit agency said.

The closure means that people trying to travel from Richmond to Millbrae will have to use other lines — and in some areas, a transfer bus — to get around on Saturday and Sunday, according to BART’s website.

Free bus service will be provided for people traveling between the Richmond and El Cerrito del Norte stations, the transit agency said. Meanwhile, riders traveling to and from Millbrae can use a shuttle train between the San Francisco International Airport and Millbrae, which is timed with the yellow line train for a transfer at the airport.

The closure marks the third of four planned weekend-long service outages along the red line while crews work to replace track equipment near the Richmond station, the transit agency said. The next planned weekend closure for the red line is scheduled for April 27 and 28.

Passengers on charter from Broome to Karratha forced to sleep overnight in bus after breakdown

Karen Jones sits under a tree in the Karratha town centre.

Nearly a week after six people were forced to spend the night in a broken-down bus on the side of a highway in Western Australia's north, a passenger says she has not received an apology or refund despite calling the company multiple times.

"I haven't heard anything back at all and that's really annoying, extremely annoying, and I find it quite rude," Karen Jones said.

"I think they should have contacted all passengers on that bus and sent an apology through to us all — 'Sorry the bus broke down for this reason' — just out of courtesy."

The service between the towns of Broome and Karratha in the state's north-west is run by Integrity Coach Lines, owned by the Pinnacle Travel Group.

Ms Jones was one of four passengers and said the charter bus bound for Karratha broke down at around 10pm on Saturday, 100 kilometres from the Sandfire Roadhouse on a remote stretch of the Great Northern Highway.

"The driver let us know that the bus was broken down and we would have to wait by the road until someone came out," she said.

Dead straight road cuts through remote part of the country

Ms Jones said the two drivers could not get the satellite phone to work and used a mobile phone to call for help before they tried to determine the cause of the breakdown.

"They went outside and they were looking around, trying to muck around with the engine … looking at the fuel," she said.

Some of the passengers then received text messages from the company which told them their journey would be delayed 12 hours.

'Stressful' night spent on side of highway

Ms Jones said one of the drivers informed them no-one from Broome was available to drive out, which meant they would have to wait until the next morning for assistance.

"Surely there was some way they could organise someone to come out and pick us up or do something, but there was nothing," she said.

Ms Jones said the passengers were upset by the delay, with about 10 bottles of water on board, family waiting to collect them, and one woman on a working visa with limited funds to travel.

Trying to sleep that evening inside the bus was uncomfortable as she was two weeks post-surgery, she said.

"It was quite stressful knowing that you're sleeping on the side of the road with five strangers and in the complete darkness."

Ms Jones said the driver told her the bus broke down because it had run out of fuel, which baffled her.

"How does that happen in this day and age, two-and-a-half hours out of Broome, on a coach that goes up and down all the time and it's run out of fuel?"

A Pinnacles Bus Tour coach arrived the next day around 9.30am, which Ms Jones said provided refreshments and fuel for the bus so it could continue its journey.

Incident was 'unfortunate'

Pinnacle Travel Group sales director Graeme Skeggs said the breakdown was unfortunate.

"There was an unfortunate breakdown on this Perth-Broome service that caused a delay to passengers, however passengers were provided with adequate water and fully assisted by the two drivers at all times, despite the long delay," he said.

A big white bus

Mr Skeggs said refreshments were supplied once the service was operational again on Sunday.

"The challenge of operating in remote areas and the tyranny of distance, being the only Perth-Broome service … when breakdowns occur there is little immediate assistance," he said.

Upon return to Perth this week, the company confirmed the vehicle was undergoing "extensive diagnostics" to ascertain the cause of the breakdown.

Mr Skeggs said he had received no complaints from passengers on the service.

"To my knowledge we have not received any negative feedback from the affected passengers other than any comments that may have been directed to the drivers at the point of breakdown," he said.
