Olympic National Park Hoh Rainforest Guided Tour

The Hoh Rainforest is a great sightseeing and hiking destination from September to July and is good for birding during spring migration and up until July. 

Private guided nature tours can be scheduled as half day tours from Forks (where Carolyn meets you in Forks M-F at 7:15 AM) or as a full day (10 hour) tour from Port Angeles (departing no later than 7 AM). 

Visiting the Hoh Rainforest is best enjoyed with a guide because you will learn about elk and temperate rainforest ecology and will enjoy Fairy Barf lichen .

Best Time of Year to Visit the Hoh Rainforest

The Hoh Rainforest is dripping in moss, ripe with summer berries, and ablaze in fall color. April, May and June are when the forest is green with new growth; July and August are flush with wild berries; September is when you can hear the male elk bugling; and October brings fall colors and excellent mushroom diversity.

Ancient Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock dominate in this river valley that receives upwards of 130 inches of rain on average a year.  Moss is incredibly prolific on all surfaces, especially when it creates curtains on maples and other surfaces. One dominate species that is not seen when touring outside the rainforest is Selaginella oregana what we call "curtain" moss to describe its growth habit.

Where to Stay and Arriving Early in the Morning to the Hoh Rainforest

Since Experience Olympic operates out of Port Angeles, it is a 4 hour (180 mile) roundtrip drive to the Hoh Rainforest. However, your guide can meet you in Forks on weekdays and recommends you consider staying overnight in Forks if you have extra vacation time.

The Hoh Rainforest is a special place to visit but everything from road access, parking area, trails, visitor center, and campground were designed for a limited number of people to visit. We will get you there early in the morning and help you savor the biodiversity of this very special place.

Enjoy the Highest Living Standing Biomass

The placard for Olympic National Park's World Heritage Site designation is housed at the Visitor Center in Hoh Rainforest. 

According to Unesco, the Hoh Rainforest has a living standing biomass which may be the highest in the world and contains one of the world’s largest stands of undisturbed temperate rainforest.

Lack of disturbance is reflected in the gigantic proportions of Hoh Rainforest trees including Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, Big-Leave Maple, and Douglas Fir.  

Roosevelt Elk in the Hoh Rainforest

The aptly named Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center Elk herd (or Campground Herd) usually resides within a mile radius of the Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center year-round. 

Additionally, multiple Roosevelt Elk herds can be observed during the drive to the Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center in winter and spring. 

While most of these herds move into the mountains during the summer and fall, the Hoh Visitor Center herd is the exception and typically does not stray far from the Visitor Center year round. 

Mossy Silence in an Ancient Rainforest

The Hoh Rainforest is where Gordon Hempton has designated One Square Inch of Silence and Nalini Nadkarni made the discovery that Big-Leaf Maple roots were growing into canopy moss.

When you visit, you will notice what happens to forest on the Olympic Peninsula that is outside of the national park boundary and you will likely be thankful for the 95% wilderness designation. 

Temperate rainforest patches exist in different regions of the world but expansive undisturbed old-growth rainforest like the Hoh Rainforest is rare.

Rain mostly comes in Winter to the Rainforest

Typical Northwest rains usually start in October and move us into winter. Intense rain and overcast days start to subside in April and then precipitation will almost completely stop in July. 

Climate in Washington State is influenced by the Aleutian low (named for the Aleutian Islands), a climatic low-pressure feature that influences cyclones in winter and shifts north and disappears in the summer. 

The North Pacific High (located between California and Hawaii during the winter) shifts north in the summer bringing us warm weather.  

Hoh Rainforest - Ancient Groves and Lots of Rain

Definitions vary but latitude and average rainfall are key determinants of a temperate rainforest like the Hoh Rainforest (the wettest forest in the lower 48).

Some of the terraces above the Hoh River have not been disturbed by flooding, landslides, fire, or logging for hundreds to thousands of years.  

Plus, all the dead wood in the form of snags (dead standing trees) and nurse logs (decomposing logs that act as a sponge for new plants to survive the dry summers) are key features of these old forests. 

Rainforest vs. Rainshadow

Different parts of the Olympic Peninsula receive different amounts of rainfall based on weather systems coming off the Pacific Ocean and the relative position of the Olympic Mountains that break up these storms.

The west side of Lake Crescent is on-average wetter than the east side and as you continue east to Port Angeles and Sequim (which only receives 17 inches of rain on average a year) there is less average annual rainfall. This difference in rainfall from west-side to east-side is called the Rainshadow Effect. 

The east-side of the Olympic Mountains have different dominant plant communities based on less rain.

Why Coastal Forest Can Feel More Like a "Rainforest" in August

The Hoh Rainforest starts at about 400 feet elevation and is about 30 river miles from the Pacific Ocean. During late July to early September there is little to no precipitation in the Hoh Rainforest. Plants and animals must adapt to deal with less water, intense sunlight, and heat. 

Since fog is common only a few miles inland, coastal forests retain more of a damp "rainforest" like feel even during summer. Our favorite places in August are the mountains, coastal beaches, and coastal forests.

Carolyn is amazing and took extra good care of us! My husband and I did a day trip to the Hoh rainforest and Ruby Beach. We learned a lot from her during our hikes -- identifying birds, moss, starfish, etc. She got me hooked on birding now haha. I hope you come again to further explore Olympic National Park, a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site that encompasses just under a million acres in size with Mount Olympus peaking up over the rest of the Olympic Mountains at just under 8,000 feet in elevation.

Our time in the national park with Carolyn included observing a Chinook Salmon run in a remote section of the Elwha River area that Carolyn had located in anticipation of our tour - this was a pretty rare and exciting viewing opportunity and we were the only people in sight, we took a great hike through Hurricane Ridge which was absolutely amazing, took a hike around the beautiful Lake Crescent area, visited 3 waterfalls (Madison, Marymere, and Sol Duc) and so much more. Our last day we spent touring the Neah Bay beach area and Cape Flattery (the furthest northwest tip of the contiguous United State). It is a bit of a drive but well worth the time - just gorgeous. Thanks to Carolyn we had an amazing time throughout our tour. Carolyn is extremely knowledgeable and could answer any question we threw at her. She is friendly, engaging and just plain fun to spend time with. Carolyn is extremely flexible and builds the schedule to do just as her clients would like it to be. We learned so much having Carolyn with us that we would never have picked up on without her. Carolyn often suggested photo opportunities and was quick to offer taking pictures of us - both with our phones and cameras as well as her own phone. We received a thank you email from Carolyn the day after our tour ended with a link to the photos she had taken. We stayed in Forks, which is about an hour drive for Carolyn, the last 2 nights of our stay. But she didn't hesitate to accommodate our location and took a bus to meet us near where we stayed. Carolyn is an absolute 5 Star! We highly recommend her - you won't regret it!

I took my family (myself, a 17 yo and 10 yo) on a snowshoe tour with Experience Olympic on Hurricane Ridge. Can't say enough good things about the company - very organized & professional, great knowledge of Natural History and the local area, good equipment, accommodating and great with all ages. It isn't always easy to find something that both my kids will enjoy equally, but both my kids loved the adventure and enjoyed Carolyn's easy way to personalize the conversation and activities to their interests. I'll definitely hire them again.

Thank you, I usually find that as long as children are allowed some time for nature play, that experience usually makes the nature trekking more enriching and memorable. Nature play for children under 11 has been shown to foster greater environmental awareness when they become adults. Appreciate that you are getting your kids into nature!!

To the Mountains! To the Olympic Mountains! This past Labor day weekend I had an itching to get out to Port Angeles for a weekend to experience the ecology of the Olympic Peninsula -- and with naturalist Carolyn Wilcox as a guide up to Hurricane Ridge, the trip was lively, informative, the snacks delicious, and of course, the sunset hike was breathtaking. And the wildlife was very much out and about -- we saw five Columbian Black-tailed Deer during the ~3 mile hike, 3 sooty grouse, Olympic marmot, red-tailed hawks, and a variety of sub-alpine wildflowers. With Carolyn interpreting the landscape, I was able to see the vertical shale formations juxtaposed with sandstone rock as part of the continuing story of the Olympics, learn about the ecology of the sooty grouse, and look over the Elwa River watershed and learn about the dam removal and restoration process -- from an ecologist who used to study mammals in the Elwha watershed prior to the dam removal! Carolyn's background is as an ecologist and an environmental educator, and hiking with her is a joy -- she gives you the depth of her knowledge of the Olympics in a compelling and accessible manner. And she is so quick with the spotting scope to ensure that a bird or raptor does not go missed.  I'll be timing my next trip to Olympic National Park to happen when raptors are migrating through the area, and contacting Carolyn -- she has even worked on a raptor survey project in Utah! Exploring a new environment is definitely a richer and more rewarding experience when travelling with an experienced local naturalist guide.  On your next trip to the Olympic Peninsula or Olympic National Park, I highly recommend Carolyn at ExperienceOlympic. Unplug and explore must-see Olympic National Park. Though this 1500 square mile UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve would take a lifetime to uncover, we dive deep into some of the National Park’s natural highlights on this all-inclusive day tour. Join a few other travelers (each tour is ten people or fewer) and an award-winning guide. 

Olympic National Park is remarkable for its ecological diversity and expansive wilderness. Our day tour can take one of two routes : Cross the Puget Sound by ferry to the northeast part of the Olympic Peninsula or journey around to the southwest side of the Park to explore some of the quietest corners of the Park. Either way we go, you’ll be able to explore the moss-draped forests, azure lakes, old-growth trees, and rugged, rocky coastlines that define the region. Once within the National Park, the course of the day can go in many ways. We always provide opportunities to explore a diveristy of ecosystems over the course of the day. Your guide will select the best destinations given the weather, season, and the accessibility of the park.

Visit Hurricane Ridge to watch deer graze in the meadows, listen to the distinct shrill of a marmot, marvel at a summer field of delicate wildflowers, or feel the snow crunch beneath your feet on a winter snowshoe.

Witness the rebirth of the mighty Elwha river after the largest dam removal project in American history.

Bask in the sun along the shores of the glacially-carved Lake Crescent or emerald waters of Lake Quinault, where you’ll explore the fern-filled forests that line its shores and mossy old growth trees. Some of the worlds largest trees live alongside Lake Quinault!

Explore the rocky shores of the north or west coast of the Olympic Peninsula, examining marine life within the tide pools, watching shore birds scurry about, or gazing across the frigid waters that define our region.

Feel the mist of cascading waterfalls tucked away within the trees at the base of Marymere or Madison Falls.

Sleep in a little – we’re bringing a light morning snack of baked pastries, local coffee, and tea. Don’t waste daylight waiting in line at a busy lunch counter – we’ll bring a fresh, local, family-style lunch to savor somewhere with a view. Enjoy snacks and drinks throughout the tour. Basically, don’t worry about a thing! 

If you’re staying in downtown Seattle, we even pick you up right at your front door. This entire day is designed to allow you to focus on enjoying some of the most beautiful, serene and intact wilderness in the state — leave all the logisitcs to us!

The Sheraton Grand is considered our default location for anyone staying outside of downtown. This isn’t always the case, so someone on our team will confirm your pick-up location and time with you the day before your tour departure. Let our team know where you’re staying and we’ll do everything we can to make your pickup as easy as possible.

7:55a Ferry Departs Seattle

We’ll likely press coffee, make tea, and have a light snack on the ferry with a water view. Restrooms available on the ferry.

8:30a Ferry Arrives at Bainbridge Island

From here, we’re continuing northwest across the Kitsap Peninsula and Hood Canal before arriving on the Olympic Peninsula.

10a Arrive in Port Angeles

From here, your guide will likely decide to head first to the coast, forests, or mountains depending on the day. Once we’re on the Peninsula, the course of your day can go so many ways. Your guide will combine group preferences, weather considerations, mixed ecosystems and highlights, crowd avoidance, and more to create a lovely day. No two trips are the same!

10:30a Lake Crescent + Old Growth Forests

For this itinerary example, start the day at Lake Crescent where the turquoise waters of the lake span to the slopes of the surrounding mountains. Parktake in an optional walk to a waterfall hidden away amonghts old growth temperate forests with massive maple and douglas fir trees, branches covered in mosses and more shades of green than you can count.

Expected trail length is one to three miles. After a walk, browse interpretive info, photograph flowers (or snow), get your Park’s passport stamped, or find a quick gift for a loved one back home while your guide sets up lunch.

1:15p Mountain Rivers, Rocky Shores, Wild Tides

We’ll set off to explore another ecosystem along the diverse Peninsula – depending on the tide levels, you may head north to the rocky shorelines of along the Salish Sea for beachcombing and tidepooling or maybe we’ll head up an infamous river valley to understand the story of one of the greatest river rewilding projects in history. Anticipate another afternoon walkabout or two sections of the park. All told, you might walk one to three miles in the afternoon (depending on your other activities).

3:00p Hurricane Ridge*

Depending on timing and conditions, head up the windy Hurricane Ridge Road. Enjoy the view and wander the subalpine trails at the top. In the summer, look out for wildflowers, marmot and deer who frequent the area. In the fall, witness the foliage take on an incredible pallete of colors. In the winter, adventure aournd via snowshoe with your guide.

*10/5/2023 Update – Beginning 10/16, Hurricane Ridge will be closed for public access so the NPS can prepare for winter operations beginning in late November.

*During the winter months (November-April), Hurricane Ridge is only accessible on Fridays – Sundays.

Q: Does this tour include snowshoeing in the winter months (November – April)? A: Possibly! Access to Hurricane Ridge is open on Fridays-Sundays for snowshoeing and other winter activities so long as the weather is safe to head up there. If you are interested in snowshowing, sign up for a Friday departure of a small group tour or reach out about a private tour for Saturday or Sunday. If you would prefer to stay out of the snow, we recommned signing up for the Monday departure.

Q: Does this tour visit the Hoh Rainforest? A: Our day tour to Olympic NP does not visit the Hoh Rainforest because it is about a 4.5 hour drive one way to get there. We wouldn’t be able to spend much time in the park or visit any other destinations before needing to turn back. The ecosystems you will experience at either Lake Crescent or Lake Quinault are very similar to the Hoh region. Lake Quinault is also a temperate rainforest, one of four located in Olympic National Park.

Q: What do I need to bring for this tour? How should I dress? There’s nothing you need to worry about for this experience other than appropriate clothing attire for the season. We will provide snacks, lunch and beverages so you don’t have to worry about a thing. Check out our Pack + Prepare page for info about how to dress based on the season.

Q: What if I’m not staying in Downtown Seattle? We have a central Downtown Seattle pickup spot at the Sheraton Grand Hotel or the option to meet at our office where we can provide free off-street parking for guests. I think 2020 was very hard for everyone. There are various restrictions in the country. Due to some restrictions, I even had to change jobs. But it was only good because I had more free time. Thanks to this, I returned to photography!

I live in Zelenograd (Autonomous district of Moscow). Unlike the center of Moscow, it is more calm and measured, and there are a lot of trees in our city (Zelenograd literally translates as green city ). Thanks to this, you can feel a certain connection with nature here, as if you are in the village. But at the same time, some areas look like a metropolis. There is also a very unusual architecture in the style of post-Soviet modernism, it is very inspiring. That's probably why I love this city.

First of all, I love my view from the window, because there are unreal sunsets. There are also many parks and alleys in the city, and in my opinion, they are much more picturesque than parks in the center of Moscow and not so mainstream. I would recommend Victory Park (not to be confused with the Park of the same name in Moscow) and the arboretum. From the Central parks, I would recommend VDNH, there is something to see and shoot.

Next to my house there is a Tanuki restaurant, where they prepare delicious Asian food. And from the bars I would recommend Hops & Coffee, it is located next to the train station. There are many varieties of author's beer and damn fine coffee!... and hot! If we talk about the center, then be sure to visit the cafe PEOPLE as PEOPLE -- this is a pleasant place where you can eat delicious and inexpensive food.

I Advise you to come to Moscow in the middle of summer, at this time there are the most comfortable weather conditions and you can walk all day long. Visit as many attractions and parks as possible, take a ride in the Moscow metro and take as much film with you as possible because here it is much more expensive! If you still need a film, then I recommend Perspektivalab . They have a good selection of films and the price is reasonable.

I like to think about the first time I went to Sokolniki Park with my girlfriend. That day, I was terribly stung by my new sneakers, but even that didn't spoil this beautiful day. We walked all day and took a lot of pictures. If you are in Moscow, be sure to go to Sokolniki Park!
