SALZBURG BOAT CRUISE - EXPLORE SALZBURG FROM THE RIVER

Experience salzburg´s old town and surroundings from another perspective.

From 30th March to 03rd November, the Panorama boat “Amadeus Salzburg” offers you a sightseeing tour in a class of its own! Marvel at the city of Mozart from the river.

In earlier times, salt (Salz in German) was transported by boat along the river to the city, thereby giving the River Salzach its name. The last ship to cruise on the river was closed in 1891 due to shallow water and weak engines. More than a century later, and since the year 2002 it is possible to cruise along the river.

A MODERN SIGHTSEEING-BOAT

The “Amadeus Salzburg” is a modern boat with seats for up to 80 passengers (including the outside deck) and has a draught of only 38 cm. The unique design with large windows allow for the magnificent panoramic view. The engines produce 1085 HP and allow the ship to reach speeds of 50 kmh.

SALZBURG BOAT CRUISE PACKAGES

The Salzach river boat offers you a range of tours to choose from. Whether it’s a romantic evening cruise, or a cruise and visit to the Palace of Hellbrunn and its facilities, this trip along the river offers fantastic views of the city of Salzburg and its many sights. You can also book a special package comprising a boat trip followed by a visit to the Salzburg Fortress with a unique concert high above the city, featuring works of Mozart and other composers. Another attraction is the combination a of boat-trip to Hellbrunn with its tricky fountains and the return journey with our original English double-decker bus. This combination (Tour 3) is unique in Salzburg. In the evening, the jetty of the “Amadeus Salzburg” then changes into into a well-attended Cocktailbar with a very special flair.

Don’t forget to take a closer look at the impressive Residenzbrunnen , a baroque fountain that is one of the largest in Central Europe.

The 17th-century Salzburg Cathedral is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. The entrance is free of charge so make sure to take a closer look at its stunning interior, intricate frescoes, and the font where Mozart was baptized.

DomQuartier

Just a short walk from the Cathedral is the DomQuartier, home to the State Tooms, the Dommuseum, the St. Peter’s Museum, and the Residence Gallery, offering insights into art, history, and more. Make sure to also visit the observation terrace at DomQuartier, it offers great views over Salzburg from a unique perspective.

Festive Halls & Karajanplatz

The Festspielhaus (Festival Hall) is a cultural landmark known for hosting world-class performances in opera, drama, and concert as well as the prestigious Salzburg Festival . Here you can visit the stunning Great Festival Hall, the House for Mozart, and the famous Rocky Riding School.

Stroll along Salzach

Following the cruise, take a stroll along the broad path of the Salzach River. This is one of my favorite activities in Salzburg. The path takes you past several key attractions such as the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Old Town, making it an ideal route for sightseeing or simply soaking in the natural beauty of the area.

Coffee at Café Tomaselli

Café Tomaselli was Mozart’s favorite coffeehouse . This historic café not only serves excellent coffee but has been a central meeting point for locals for over 150 years. Here, you can enjoy traditional Austrian coffee specialties and cakes, such as the famous Sacher Torte, as well as Mozart’s favorite drink – almond milk.

Fortress Hohensalzburg

After your coffee break, visit the Fortress Hohensalzburg. It is one of Europe’s largest medieval castles and an iconic landmark of Salzburg. Inside, you’ll find historical exhibits, grand halls, and an opportunity to delve into Salzburg’s past.

Exploring this medieval castle not only offers a deeper insight into the city’s rich history but also some of the best panoramic views of Salzburg and its surroundings.

Mozartkugel at Café Fürst

Treat yourself to the famous Mozartkugel, a chocolate praline made of marzipan, nougat, and dark chocolate.

Salzburg is home to two different brands of Mozartkugel. Café Fürst is believed to be the original creator of the famous chocolate treat and still uses the original recipe. The Mirabell brand is more recognized internationally and you can find their Mozartkugeln in souvenir shops all over Austria.

As a local, I have to side with the Fürst family. But as someone visiting Salzburg, you should try them both –  I mean, it’s chocolate!

Mozart Residence

Cross the river to reach Makartplatz where you will find the Mozart Residence. This famous building was the home of the Mozart family from 1773 to 1787 and is now a museum.

Unlike Mozart’s Birthplace, which focuses on his early years, the Residence offers insights into his later life, including his adolescence and adulthood. Here you’ll see documents, portraits, and original instruments, providing a comprehensive overview of Mozart’s life and works.

Mirabell Palace & Gardens

Next, explore the stunning Mirabell Palace with its baroque architecture and the famous Marble Hall, one of the most beautiful wedding halls in the world.

Surrounding the Palace, you will find the Mirabell Gardens with beautifully arranged flowerbeds and statues. Take a stroll along the Gardens’ historic paths or take a seat at one of the benches to enjoy the view.

Fans of “The Sound of Music” will recognize Mirabell Gardens as one of the filming locations. Here you can see the steps where Maria and the Von Trapp children sang ‘Do-Re-Mi.’

Lunch at L’Osteria

For lunch, head to L’Osteria, my favorite Italian restaurant in Salzburg. L’Osteria is known for its lively atmosphere and friendly service and serves a variety of Italian dishes. But its delicious, oversized pizzas are the true stars and the reason why I come here regularly.

The Sound of Music Tour

In the afternoon, join the official Sound of Music tour . This guided tour takes you to various filming locations across the city and its surroundings, offering a unique way to experience the movie’s magic in real life.

Highlights include the Basilica St. Michael, where the wedding of Maria and Baron von Trapp was filmed, and Leopoldskron Castle, where the famous boating scene was filmed. The tour also includes behind-the-scenes stories and insights into both the making of the film and the true story it’s based on.

Believe it or not, most Austrians have never heard of the Sound of Music. Unbelievable, right? I was one of them until I finally saw the movie at the age of 19 and became a huge fan.

Book your adventure : Sound of Music tour

Hellbrunn Palace

The Hellbrunn Palace, was built in the 17th century by Archbishop Markus Sittikus and was used as a summer residence but the real attraction is the unique Trick Fountains featuring hidden jets that surprise visitors. The trick fountains reflect the archbishop’s sense of humor and are still a source of amusement for all ages.

With the help of an audio guide, you can playfully explore the Palace Gardens with its various Trick Fountains, but watch out for hidden water jets!

Dinner at Die Weisse

End your day at Die Weisse, an authentic Salzburg restaurant serving delicious Austrian food. Die Weisse is also one of Salzburg’s most famous breweries and is known for its variety of beers.

This is a great spot to enjoy a hearty dinner in a lively atmosphere and try the different homebrews. Salzburg has a long tradition of brewing beer, making it a vital part of the local culinary scene.

salzach cruise timings

Salzburg’s location and great connections to surrounding cities make it an ideal base for exploring the wider region. Whether you’re interested in idyllic villages, historical sites, or natural wonders, there’s a day trip for everyone.

The following are my favorite destinations for a day trip from Salzburg.

The village of Hallstatt with its ancient Salt Mines is often referred to as one of the most beautiful lake towns in the world. This picturesque village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a spectacular panorama of the idyllic lake and the alps in the background.

The Eagle’s Nest , Hitler’s mountain retreat, sits in the Bavarian Alps in Berchtesgarden. The Nazis used this building for state occasions and government meetings. Today you can gain insights into World War II history and enjoy unforgettable views over the surrounding Bavarian Alps.

The Hohenwerfen Fortress is a medieval castle with a historic State Falconer and the Museum of Falconry. Here you can experience daily falconry demonstrations and enjoy the stunning views over the Salzach valley. Nearby you’ll find the Ice Caves, known as the biggest in the world, where you can explore a unique world of ice sculptures and formations.

Salzburg 2 day itinerary

Two days in Salzburg are ideal if you want to focus on the city’s highlights and are not interested in doing a full day trip. Follow the first two days of the itinerary above which takes you to the city’s historical and cultural landmarks, lets you experience the traditional Austrian coffee culture, and taste some of Salzburg’s famous beers and Austrian specialities. In the afternoon of day two you can choose between the Sound of Music tour or a tour to Hallstatt.

Salzburg Cathedral & DomQuartier

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Concert at Fortress

Café Fürst & Chocolate pralines Mozartkugel

The Sound of Music Tour or Half-day Tour to Hallstatt

If you have just one day in Salzburg, focus on the city’s main attractions to get a taste of its unique character and charm. Explore the Old Town with its baroque architecture and historic sites while you visit landmarks like the Salzburg Cathedral, the Fortress, and Mozart’s Birthplace.

This one-day itinerary ensures you experience the essence of Salzburg and don’t miss the chance to savor the delicious Austrian cuisine.

Salzburg is a great city to visit all year round, but the best time to visit is spring and early autumn. At this time of the year, you usually have pleasant weather and see fewer crowds, making it the perfect time for outdoor activities and exploring the city.

In summer the famous Salzburg Festival takes place and draws in visitors from all over the world. Expect more crowds and higher prices during this time.

As the snow falls, the city transforms into a magical winter wonderland with festive Christmas markets, making winter my favorite season in Salzburg.

Read next: Things to do in Salzburg in winter

By Air: Salzburg is serviced by Wolfang Amadeus Mozart Airport1.8 miles (3 km) from the city center. For the quickest journey from the airport to the city, opt for a private transfer . It should take you roughly 10 to 20 minutes from the airport to the city center, depending on traffic.

By train: Salzburg also offers an excellent railway network, with trains connecting the city to various major destinations within Austria and neighboring countries. The train station is situated to the north of the city center and is easily accessible via bus or on foot.

By car : If you rather travel by car, reaching Salzburg is pretty straightforward as well. From within Austria, you can take the A1 or A10 autobahn, and if you arrive from Germany, use the A8. Make sure you get the vignette. Parking in downtown Salzburg is available but fees apply.

If you stay in Salzburg’s Old Town, most attractions will be located within walking distance. Most parts of the Old Town are a pedestrian area and the narrow streets are best explored on foot, allowing you to enjoy the charm of this historic area.

This hop-on-hop-off bus tour is a great way to explore Salzburg. It takes you directly to the most important sights, and is a more efficient alternative to public transport, especially during winter traffic conditions.

While Salzburg has a well-connected public bus system, the buses are often late in winter, especially when there’s snow.

Salzburg also operates a local train with multiple stops across the city. This is a great option if you want to explore areas beyond the Old Town and you have a train station nearby. Especially in winter, trains are often faster than buses.

Nestled against the backdrop of the stunning Alps, Salzburg’s got it all – a cute old town, stunning alpine views, and a Mozart connection. The baroque architecture, especially Hohensalzburg Fortress, and its association with The Sound of Music make it uniquely interesting.

Austria offers diverse experiences, from rich culture, stunning landscapes, and historic cities like Vienna and Salzburg, to outdoor activities like skiing and hiking in the Alps. Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

salzach cruise timings

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

salzach cruise timings

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

salzach cruise timings

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

salzach cruise timings

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

salzach cruise timings

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

salzach cruise timings

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

salzach cruise timings

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.

  • I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
  • I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
  • I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.

Insider Today

I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.

I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .

While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.

Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.

Pay for upgrades in the main dining room

Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.

I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.

So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.

Buy the drink package

I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.

I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.

This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.

Related stories

I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.

Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers

Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.

Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.

This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Wear my room key around my neck

I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.

There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.

The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.

That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."

Misname the ship

English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.

Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."

If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"

Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time

Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.

I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.

When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.

That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly declined Thursday as investors awaited a flood of global earnings reports, including updates from U.S. tech companies known as the “Magnificent Seven.”

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 slid 1.4% in morning trading to 37,931.81. South Korea’s Kospi dropped nearly 1.0% to 2,649.96. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.5% to 17,282.67, while the Shanghai Composite edged 0.2% higher, to 3,049.90.

Trading was closed in Australia for a national holiday, Anzac Day.

Attention is also turning to the Bank of Japan, whose two-day monetary policy meeting started Thursday.

“For the record, heading into tomorrow’s policy decision, exceptional Japanese yen weakness is the agitated elephant in the room for the BoJ,” Tan Jing Yi of Mizuho Bank said in a commentary.

In currency trading, the U.S. dollar rose to 155.46 Japanese yen from 155.31 yen. The euro cost $1.0707, up from $1.0697.

The yen has been trading at 155 yen-levels lately, its lowest level in 34 years. That helps Japanese exporters by raising the value of their overseas earnings, but it also raises the price of imports. Speculation has been growing Japan may intervene to prop up the yen.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was virtually flat and edged up by 1.08, or less than 0.1%, to 5,071.63. It had jumped sharply in the first two days of the week to claw back nearly two-thirds of last week’s steep loss .

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 42.77, or 0.1%, to 38,460.92, and the Nasdaq composite added 16.11, or 0.1%, to 15,712.75.

Tesla jumped 12.1% after saying the night before that it would accelerate production of new, more affordable vehicles , which investors have been hoping will kickstart growth. The announcement helped investors look past the 55% drop in profit that Tesla reported.

Tesla is the first of the group of stocks among the Magnificent Seven to report its results for the start of 2024. The focus is on the small group of stocks because they drove most of the U.S. stock market’s gain last year, and they’ll need to perform to justify their high prices.

Meta Platforms also reported its latest results after trading ended Wednesday. Alphabet and Microsoft will follow it a day later.

The hope is that profit growth will broaden beyond the Magnificent Seven to other types of companies, in large part because a remarkably solid U.S. economy. They’ll likely need to deliver fatter profits if they want their stock prices to rise. That’s because they’re unlikely to get much help from the other lever that can lift stock prices: interest rates.

“A strong earnings season looks likely to help restore market confidence,” according to Solita Marcelli, chief investment officer Americas at UBS Global Wealth Management.

A report Wednesday said orders for machinery, airplanes and other long-lasting manufactured goods were stronger last month than expected. A recent string of such reports has quashed hopes that the Federal Reserve may deliver the three cuts to interest rates this year that it had earlier signaled.

Boeing lost 2.9% despite reporting results that weren’t as bad as analysts feared . The company, which is battling criticism about the safety of its airplanes, said it’s taking steps to improve its manufacturing quality, which has slowed down production.

Teledyne Technologies tumbled 10.9% for one of the market’s largest losses after the seller of digital imaging sensors, cameras and other equipment reported weaker profit and revenue than forecast. It said demand from the industrial automation and test and measurement markets was weaker than it expected.

On the winning side of the market, Hasbro jumped 11.9% after the toy and game company reported better profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It benefited from growth delivered by its Baldur Gate 3 and Magic: The Gathering games, as well as by its Peppa Pig content.

Texas Instruments climbed 5.6% after reporting stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than forecast. Boston Scientific was another one of the stronger forces pushing upward on the S&P 500. It rose 5.7% after topping forecasts for profit and revenue.

In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude declined 15 cents to $82.66 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, fell 14 cents to $87.88 a barrel.
