3 ways to record your screen on a Mac computer

  • To screen record on Mac, use the Screenshot Toolbar or QuickTime Player.
  • Both built-in apps allow you to turn on your Mac's internal microphone to add narration.
  • You can also third-party screen recording apps like Apowersoft Screen Recorder, Snagit, and Loom.

Say you want to capture something on your Mac screen — but a screenshot just won't do it.

That's when screen recordings come in handy. You can record a video of your Mac's screen using either the Screenshot Toolbar tool, or the QuickTime Player app, both of which come pre-installed on your Mac.

How to screen record on a Mac using the Screenshot Toolbar

Again, remember that this method is only available if you're running macOS Mojave or newer. If you're not sure what version of macOS you have, read our article on how to check your macOS version and install any needed updates .

Once you're ready to record:

1. Press Command + Shift + 5 on your keyboard to open the Screenshot Toolbar.

A toolbar with a number of icons and options will appear at the bottom of the screen. You're looking for the icons that have the record symbol (a solid circle) over them. One will record a video of your entire screen, and the other will let you select a specific section of the screen to record.

2. Pick which recording type you want — and if you picked Record Selected Portion , highlight the part of your screen that you want to film — and then click Record . If you want to cancel a screen recording before it begins, press the Esc key.

3. Your screen recording will start immediately, and capture everything on your screen (or in the selected section) and any audio playing. When you're done, click the stop button in the menu bar on the top of the screen.

By default, your screen recordings will be saved to the desktop as .mov files. You can change this by opening the Screenshot Toolbar and clicking Options — see below for more details.

How to screen record on a Mac using QuickTime Player

This is the method you'll want to use if you're running an older version of macOS. If you go through these steps while running macOS Mojave or newer, it'll just lead you back to the Screenshot Toolbar.

1. Open the QuickTime Player app on your Mac. You can find it in your Applications folder, or by searching for it.

2. Click File in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

3. Click New Screen Recording and wait for a dark gray recording window to appear.

Select the "New Screen Recording" option. Devon Delfino/Insider

4. Click the red record button, then click anywhere on the screen to start a fullscreen recording, or drag your mouse to record only a specific section.

How to record audio in screen recordings

When you're recording your screen using QuickTime, you can also choose to record sounds, such as your own voice for narration.

1. Open the QuickTime Player app on your Mac.

4. Click the down arrow next to the red record button to expand the dropdown. Then, click on Internal Microphone under "Microphone."

QuickTime will give you less options, but still lets you narrate the recording. Apple

Once you stop recording, your new video will open in QuickTime automatically. From here, you can watch, edit, and share it.

How to screen record with third-party apps

The beauty of recording your screen on a Mac is that you're not stuck with the built-in tools. There are plenty of third-party options you can use to capture your screen and even add narration.

Apowersoft Screen Recorder

Apowersoft Screen Recorder is free and easy to use. It's a browser-based app, meaning you have access to unlimited screen recording without having to download anything.

Apowersoft Screen Recorder has flexible controls, allowing you to pause and resume recording easily, schedule your screen recordings, and select specific portions of your screen that you wish to capture.

If you're going to make an instructional video, then Snagit is the best choice. On top of allowing you to capture everything to your screen, it allows you to add visuals during editing to make your videos more interesting.

It also has templates that help simplify the video creation process, allowing you to record tutorials, presentations, seminars, and other types of helpful videos in minutes.

Furthermore, Snagit allows you to instantly share your video to several platforms, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Slack, and email, for easier feedback and collaboration. It's not free though, and you'll have to pay $62.99 to start (a free trial is available).

Loom allows you to capture both video and audio using its desktop app or Chrome extension.

Once you capture the video, you can store it in Loom's native cloud storage so it doesn't take up space on your Mac , create a link, and share it with others right from your dashboard. And you can trim away any unnecessary segments to make the video focused, concise, and professional.

You can use Loom for free, but you'll be limited to recording five-minute videos. You can record for an unlimited amount of time starting from $8.00 per month with the Business plan.

How to Capture or Record Your Mac's Desktop With the Screenshot App

If you've ever wanted to screenshot your Mac's desktop or record a video of it but don't know quite how to do so, then you've come to the right place. Keep reading to learn how you can record any Mac desktop activity in just a few simple steps.

m1 mac family

Or maybe you want to demonstrate a bug or some odd Mac behavior, in which case you could make a video showing it in action. Either way, it's easy to capture a recording when you know how.

In macOS, Apple includes a Screenshot app in the Applications/Utilities folder which provides a screen capture interface that unifies the screenshot and screen recording features on Mac, making them easier to access from one place. You can also get to it by hitting the keys Command-Shift-5 on your keyboard.

screen capture

If you want to capture a selected portion of the screen, click Record Selected Portion , then use the mouse cursor crosshairs to select the area you want to capture. Once you're ready, click the Record/Capture button in the floating overlay. When you take the screen recording, a button will appear in the menu bar for you to click when you're ready to end the recording.

Mac desktop

As you'd expect, unchecking the Show Mouse Pointer option ensures the mouse cursor doesn't appear in your capture. There's also a Remember Last Selection option, which is handy if you want to capture a particular part of the screen several times consecutively. The Show Floating Thumbnail option takes a little more explaining.

When you take a screenshot or screen recording, a floating thumbnail appears in the bottom corner of the screen, just like it does when you take a screenshot on an iOS device.

screen capture

If you're taking multiple video clips in sequence, you probably won't want the floating thumbnail showing up in subsequent captures, which is why the option to turn it off exists.

By default, screen recordings are saved in .MOV format, which can be viewed in Apple's QuickTime Player as well as many third-party video playback apps such as VLC, making your video clips easy to share with others.

The ultimate guide for how to record screen on a Mac

How to record screen on a Mac

When it comes to figuring out how to record screen on a Mac, you've got a few options, including a trick that will let you narrate your own video (my preferred choice). Capturing the actions on your MacBook screen might sound like magic or like something that should be really easy, but once you get a hang of it, you'll wonder how you lived without it.

For starters, this is how I show proof of all sorts of lottery drawings that I do for side projects, because when it's time to show that yes I used a number randomizer, this is a lot cleaner than recording my screen with my phone.

You may want to capture your Mac screen for troubleshooting, sharing, or teaching. Whatever the reason, it isn't difficult to take a screen recording or capture on your Mac. You don't even need third-party software, although screen recording software is available if you want it . Here's how to screen record on Mac.

Instructions in this article apply to Mac OS X Panther (10.3) and later.

How to Capture Your Entire Mac Screen

A single keyboard command will take a snapshot of everything on your Mac's screen, including the menu at the top. To do so, press Command+Shift+3 .

In newer versions of macOS, a preview of the image will appear in the lower-right corner of your display. From there, you can drag the screenshot directly into an email, text message, or other program if it's ready to use as-is.

If you miss the preview, the system will save the screenshot to the Desktop by default. The title will be " Screenshot [Date] at [Time] ," for example, "Screenshot 2020-07-07 at 1.52.03 PM."

Hold Control while taking the screenshot to copy it to the Clipboard . You can use this shortcut whether you're capturing the entire screen or just part of it.

To avoid cluttering the Desktop, you can change the save location for screenshots to create a dedicated folder that you can easily empty.

How to Capture Part of Your Mac's Screen

You may just want to snapshot a specific section, and you can use a keyboard command for that, too. Here's what to do:

Make sure the element you want to capture is visible on the screen.

Press Command+Shift+4 on your keyboard.

A set of crosshairs will appear with some numbers next to them. Those digits correspond to the crosshairs' coordinates on the screen in pixels.

Click and drag a box to select the area you want to capture. The numbers next to the crosshair will change to show the dimensions of your selection, still in pixels.

To redo your selection while making it, hold Space and drag the box to a new starting point. You can make these adjustments as many times as you need before you save the screenshot.

Release the mouse button to take the screenshot. A preview will appear in the lower-right corner of the screen, or you can find it later in the save location (the Desktop, by default).

To start over, press Esc to cancel, and then press the keyboard combination again to re-enter capture mode.

How to Capture a Specific Window in macOS

You don't have to manually select to capture the contents of a single window. You can also quickly copy its contents with an extra keyboard command.

Pull up the contents you want to copy.

Press Command+Shift+4 on your keyboard to enter capture mode.

Press Space . The crosshairs will turn into a camera.

Place the cursor over the window you want to capture. The window will get a slight blue highlight. Don't worry, the blue hue won't be there when you capture the image.

The window you capture doesn't need to be the active one.

Click the window to capture it. Press Esc to cancel.

By default, a screenshot of a window will include a white background with a "shadow" under the image. To save just the window, hold Option when you click the window.

How to Take a Screenshot With the macOS Screenshot App

In macOS Mojave (10.14) and later, you can access even more options with a dedicated Screenshot app. Along with static screenshots, you can also record what is happening on your screen.

Press Command+Shift+5 on your keyboard to open the Screenshot interface.

A small menu bar will appear at the bottom of the screen. The first three options are for static screenshots.

  • Capture Entire Screen : Instantly take a screenshot of everything visible on your display.
  • Capture Selected Window : Take a screenshot of a single window. Again, hold Control while clicking the window to remove the background from the final image.
  • Capture Selected Portion : Drag out a box to highlight a specific part of the screen and only grab that area.

The Options menu to the right of the capture buttons contains a variety of settings.

  • Save To : Choose an option from the list to tell macOS where to save your screenshots and captures. Use Other Location to browse to a specific folder.
  • Timer : Set a delay between when you press a capture button and when the capture occurs.
  • Microphone : Choose the sound input, if any, for screen recordings. Usually, you'll see either None or your Mac's internal hardware, but if you have a USB mic connected, you can choose that, too. You can't change this setting when a screen recording is active.
  • Show Floating Thumbnail : Toggle whether or not the preview image appears after you take a screenshot or recording.
  • Remember Last Selection : Select this option to tell Screenshot to use the same selection box for subsequent captures. This setting saves time if you're taking multiple shots of the same area.
  • Show Mouse Pointer/Show Mouse Clicks : Keep this setting off to make your pointer invisible in screenshots and recordings.

Your Mac saves screen recordings in the same location as screenshots.

How to Record Your Screen With the macOS Screenshot App

The built-in Screenshot app also includes options for capturing a video of everything you're doing. Screen recordings are handy for demonstrating processes and creating shareable instructional videos. Here's how to make one with the Screenshot app.

The icons in the second panel (the fourth and fifth buttons from the left) control screen recordings, and they're similar to the options you have when taking a still screenshot.

  • Record Entire Screen : Start recording everything visible on your screen. While you're recording, you can switch between windows and programs and you use your Mac as you normally would.
  • Record Selected Portion : Drag out a box to specify which part of the screen to record.

You can't easily limit a screen recording to a single window like you can with a screenshot, but you can draw a box around that window to get similar results.

Select the recording option you want to use, highlight the portion of your screen you want to capture (if necessary), and then click the Record button at the far right of the Screenshot bar.

Press Esc to cancel.

Just like with still screenshots, you can adjust your selection by holding Shift and moving the box.

While Screenshot is capturing your screen, use your Mac as you normally would. You can still take screenshots while making a recording.

To stop recording all or part of your screen, click the Stop button in the menu bar.

Alternatively, re-open the Screenshot app by pressing Command+Shift+5 and press the Stop button, which replaces the screen capture options.

Your Mac saves screen recordings to the same folder as screenshots (or whichever location you chose from the Options menu). Their names follow the format " Screen Recording [Date] at [Time] ," for example, "Screen Recording 2020-07-07 at 1.52.03 PM."

How to Record Your Screen Without the Screenshot App

If you're running macOS High Sierra (10.13) or earlier, you don't have access to the Screenshot app, but you can still record your screen using Quicktime Player. To do so, select File > New Screen Recording .

Alternatively, press Control+Command+N on your keyboard.

Just like in Screenshot, you can record all or part of your screen. Press the Stop button in the menu bar to stop recording. Your Mac saves screen recordings you take in Quicktime to the same location as screenshots.

Create a video record of what happens on your display

Best Laptops 2020: Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch

Whether you want to save a video of what’s playing on your screen, share what you’re looking at with friends, or film a tutorial, recording your Mac’s screen can come in handy. Luckily, Macs have this feature built in ( your iPhone does as well ), letting you record part or all of your screen.

It also lets you record external audio — anything coming in through your mic — but the Mac’s built-in options don’t let you record internal audio. For that, you’ll have to download a third-party app, like Soundflower . You can, of course, turn on the external mic and turn up the volume, but this won’t give you great audio.

One more caveat: some apps, like Apple’s built-in DVD Player, will block you from doing any screen recording.

You can record your screen through QuickTime Player for all versions of macOS up to Mojave, but in newer versions of macOS (Mojave and Catalina), there’s a separate app called Screenshot which lets you record your screen. We’ll go through using that first, then cover the steps for using QuickTime.

Record your screen in macOS Mojave or Catalina

  • Press Command + Shift + 5 to open Screenshot.
  • A control bar will appear at the bottom of your screen. You can use it for grabbing still screenshots or for recording a video of your screen.

  • Click on “Options” to set your preferences. You can switch on your microphone, for example, set a timer, and choose where the recording will be saved.

  • To record the whole screen, click on the button that shows a screen with a solid outline and a circle in the corner.
  • To record a section of your screen, click on the button that shows a screen with a dotted outline and a circle in the corner. Part of your screen will be highlighted and you’ll see dotted lines marking what you’ll be recording. You can resize or move that window.
  • When you’re ready, click “Record.” If you’re recording your whole screen, you can click anywhere on the screen to start recording.
  • To stop recording, you can either press the stop button in the right corner of the menu bar at the top of the screen or press Command + Control + Esc. You can also press Command + Shift + 5 to pull up the Screenshot bar at the bottom of the screen and hit the stop button in the center of that bar.

Record your screen with QuickTime Player

If you have macOS Mojave or earlier, you can use QuickTime Player to record your screen. (If you’re using macOS Catalina, opening up QuickTime Player and clicking “New Screen Recording” will automatically open up the Screenshot app, as above.)

  • Open up QuickTime Player.
  • Click on File in the top menu (or, if QuickTime is in your dock, right-click on the icon) and select “New Screen Recording.”
  • You’ll get a pop-up window labeled “Screen Recording.” Click the arrow next to the record button for recording options, like choosing to record audio from your computer’s external mic or to show your mouse clicks.

  • Either way, QuickTime will open the video for you to view and edit.

The 5 Best Mac Screen Recorder Apps for Capturing Your Screen

Need an app to record the screen on your Mac? Here are the best screen recorder apps to capture your Mac desktop.

Interested in creating video tutorials to teach others how to use some software? Or perhaps you need to communicate a computer problem you’re experiencing? Screen recording software is one of the most effective ways of presenting this information on your Mac.

Fortunately, you’ll find an excellent selection of screen recorders for macOS at your disposal. Whether you need something simple and free or the advanced features of a paid solution, we’ve rounded up the best screen recorders for Mac to help you decide—including ones that record audio along with video.

1. ScreenFlow

The first aspect you’ll notice about ScreenFlow is the price tag. At $149, is it justified? That depends on how many of the extensive features you’ll actually use. Calling ScreenFlow a screen recorder is like referring to Mount Everest as a sandcastle.

Not only can you record from multiple monitors, but you can choose to record from your webcam and connected iOS device simultaneously. Combine that with the ability to record audio from multiple apps at once (along with microphones) and a fairly advanced closed caption editor tool, and you have the perfect setup for creating video tutorials.

Recorded media from all sources saves to a single timeline where you can turn the raw footage into a professional-grade video quickly and easily. Annotations, callouts, and video motions are at your fingertips in an easy-to-use interface. One particularly interesting feature is the touch callouts, which can demonstrate screen touches and gestures if you’re recording the screen on an iOS device .

ScreenFlow also has a variety of exporting options depending on where you’d like to view your finished video. You’ll find presets from lossless ProRes codecs to ones specifically for the Apple TV.

If you’re considering making many screen recordings that involve recording sound from or into your Mac, or recording from multiple sources, and you’d like to add some embellishments in post-production, ScreenFlow might be what you’re looking for.

Download: ScreenFlow ($149, free trial available)

Perhaps having a fully-fledged video editor is overkill for your use case. Maybe you’re looking to create mostly disposable videos quickly without needing many of the post-production enhancements that come with ScreenFlow. Snagit combines some of the best of these screen recording features in a simple interface.

It allows simultaneous recording from screens and webcams, but you can’t overlay the videos, and you will need to toggle between which one is recorded.

Snagit also allows you to record audio. This audio can come from your Mac’s internal microphone, another microphone you plug in, or it can come from your computer’s sound system. The audio can be captured as you screen record your Mac. You can also view your past recordings and tag them to find them quickly in the future.

Snagit features a powerful image editor with a vast library of assets to annotate your images on the fly. One handy feature is the ability to export a video as a GIF with a single click from the preview screen.

Snagit is perfect if your focus is on getting good-enough screen recordings that will probably have a short shelf life.

3. Camtasia

Camtasia has been around since 2002, which makes it a screen recording veteran. Like Snagit, it’s developed by Techsmith. While Snagit focuses on quickly recording and exporting, Camtasia is a beefier Mac screen recorder with a fully featured video editor.

Camtasia’s interface may seem busy, but it quickly becomes familiar. The first time you start Camtasia, it loads a sample project with a handy video tutorial. This extends to Camtasia’s numerous other video tutorials on its website to help you start churning out professional screen recordings as quickly as possible.

The app offers screen recordings from multiple sources and records audio from both a mic and your computer’s system after or during video recording. Camtasia also has a library of royalty-free music and sound effects you can insert into your screen recordings after the fact.

You can also send recordings from your mobile device directly—but, admittedly, this mobile device integration isn’t as smooth as ScreenFlow’s.

Camtasia’s trump card is in the plethora of assets that are available to enhance your videos. It includes beautifully designed annotations, callouts, transitions, and visual effects.

Since these are all drag-and-drop, you can apply and customize them in a matter of seconds. Camtasia also makes quick work of adding clicks, keystrokes, spotlights, and zooms, so viewers can easily follow along with the instructor.

Like ScreenFlow, this app does come with a significant cost. But if you’re after a polished interface and looking to create videos that are more than just simple animations, then it might be worth the investment.

4. Movavi Screen Recorder

Movavi’s Screen Recorder is one of the highest-rated screen recorders, sitting in the sweet spot between price and functionality. It combines a broad set of tools with an easy-to-use interface and has the benefit of being both a quick capture tool and a fully-featured editor when combined with Movavi Video Editing Plus.

With the Movavi Screen Recorder, you can effortlessly create screencasts and record your screen, and there are even options to schedule a finish time for your recording, record your webcam video only, or record only your system sound or mic. This means you can record audio separately from recording your Mac’s screen, or record audio as you record a video capture of your screen.

If you’re trying to demonstrate a particular software, the ability to track your keyboard strokes and your mouse clicks comes in very handy too.

While the Movavi Screen Recorder may not be the most elaborate screen recording software on the market, its modest pricetag makes it a great option for people who don’t want to invest in more complex software such as Camtasia or Screenflow.

5. QuickTime

If your use case doesn’t involve complex editing, annotations, and filters, Apple has a screen recorder baked into macOS with QuickTime. QuickTime is a reliable video player, but it’s also a quick and easy screen recorder that you don’t need to pay for.

Just open QuickTime Player, then go to File > New Screen Recording . You’ll see a popup for the video screen capture menu where you can choose the area of the screen you want to capture.

Do you want to record audio with your QuickTime screen recording? Select the dropdown icon next to the Record button to choose a microphone for adding audio as you do your video recording. You can select a microphone you plug in, or your Mac’s built-in microphone.

QuickTime sadly isn’t as good at capturing your computer’s internal sounds. You can put the volume up on your speakers and hold a microphone up to them (or hope your internal mic picks up most of the sound they make). Otherwise, you might need to get an audio feedback app like Loopback to set as your microphone instead. With such an app, you can record microphone audio along with sounds from another app.

QuickTime at least features some essential editing tools like rotation, splitting, and trimming. You can also add clips to the end of a sequence if you’d like to combine your video screen capture with something that you’re referencing. You will, however, need a video converter if you’re looking to export in anything other than MOV format.

QuickTime is perfect if you need to record your screen in a pinch and you don’t require any annotations, filters, or effects. It’s also one of the best video converter apps for macOS . Pair QuickTime with a free Mac video editor if you need more options, such as additional audio recording like we mentioned above.

Which Mac Screen Recorder Is Best?

Ultimately, when choosing any piece of software you will be driven by both your requirements and budget. If you’re looking to record your iPhone or iPad along with your Mac screen frequently, ScreenFlow makes an excellent choice. Snagit offers a good set of essential tools and makes it easy to share with other apps.

The other paid options do come with a slight learning curve but offer flexibility when making changes. They also have a good selection of assets to add that professional touch to your videos. And all of these apps can record at least some audio while they capture your screen.

Aside from QuickTime, which is totally free, each of the screen recording apps mentioned above have trial versions. Make sure to test out the software before spending your money.

The Best Screen Recording Apps for Your Mac

Jeff Butts

There are plenty of reasons you may need to record your Mac’s screen. Perhaps you want to keep a recording of an important business meeting. Maybe you want to record lectures. If you’re helping friends and family with their own tech, recording tutorials can be a game changer. While macOS does include its own screen recording capability by way of QuickTime, that software can only do so much. Let’s check out some of the best screen recording apps you can find for your Mac.

The Nuts & Bolts of Screen Recording Apps for Your Mac

With all of the different reasons you may want to record your Mac’s screens come a variety of features and capabilities you’ll want. For example, if you want to record a streaming video with sound, like a lecture or online call, you need audio, too.

When you’re creating a tutorial for how to accomplish a task on the Mac, you might also need the ability to mark up the video. You will probably want some way to create arrows or other callouts, pointing out what you’re doing. If the video has sensitive information in it, like your username or address, maybe you want to be able to blur that out.

Naturally, you’l probably want to be able to include audio narration, too. For that, you may want to record your own voice or use a text-to-speech app. Whatever you choose, you’ll want to be able to include that easily into your project.

These are just some of the features and capabilities you might be looking for in screen recording apps for your Mac. In some cases, you might find all the features you need in a single app. Not always, though, so you might also consider using a screen recorder in tandem with video editing software .

With that in mind, I tend to categorize screen recording apps for Mac into two camps: those that include video editing functionality and those that simply record your screen for you.

Your Choices for Screen Recording Software Without Editing Capabilities

In this category, you’ve got several possibilities. Some are free, some are paid apps. Some require you to install software on your Mac while others will just run from a browser. One of the top-used choices is probably already on your Mac, in fact.

QuickTime Player for Mac

For years, QuickTime Player has included the ability to record your Mac’s screen. If your needs are simple and you don’t need to record system sounds, QuickTime Player works just fine.

To get started with screen recording using QuickTime Player on your Mac, all you need to do is press Shift-Command-5 or use Launchpad to open Screenshot . The floating menu bar that appears is part of QuickTime Player’s toolset .

Availability: Free, included with macOS

  • It’s free and already installed on your Mac.
  • QuickTime Player records your screen in its native resolution.
  • Quick and easy to use.
  • You won’t find any editing tools, other than being able to split and trim your videos.
  • Recording your Mac’s system sound is possible, but only through a clunky, low-quality workaround.

ScreenPal comes first, as it’s a reliable and very handy app with which you can create, capture, and share videos and images.

This app offers many tools that help you screen record fast, easily, and also for free. Plus, you don’t need to have any sort of experience because it is beginner-friendly.

With ScreenPal, you can screen record with audio narration, add music if you want, captions, and more. You can save the file in MP4, AVI, FLV, or GIF formats either in 4K, HD, or standard.

Availability: Free, and other 4 payment plans, starting with 3$ per month for Deluxe, 6$ for Premier, 10$ for Max, and 8$ for Business.

  • Free usage for basic editing tools and screen capture.
  • Very intuitive and aesthetically pleasing interface.
  • Good content hosting and management tools.
  • Advanced features are only available in the paid plans.
  • Doesn’t have a lifetime subscription.

➡️ Get ScreenPal

CleanShot X

One basic screen recording option is actually included in SetApp, a software subscription service for Mac. CleanShot X allows you to create screenshots or video screen recordings, along with some basic editing tools.

With CleanShot X, you can record your display and webcam, along with microphone and system sound. The app automatically highlights mouse clicks and keystrokes as you record, and hides notifications.

CleanShot X has a built-in trimming tool, but that’s really it for post-production of your video recordings.

Availability: $29 as a one-time payment or $8 per user per month with Cloud Pro access. Also available in the Setapp subscription offering .

  • Easy to use, whether for screenshots or screen recording.
  • Records your display, webcam, microphone and system sound.
  • Multiple pricing options.
  • No free trial to test it before you use it.
  • Cannot do video editing other than splitting and trimming.

➡️ Get CleanShot X

EaseUS RecExpert

Available for both Windows and Mac, EaseUS RecExpert is a good, basic screen recording solution. It does several things QuickTime Player doesn’t, including recording your screen along with your Mac’s system sounds. You can even record your microphone at the same time, which can be handy.

RecExpert allows you to record your full screen, with support for multiple monitors. You can also capture just a selection of your display, if you want. The software goes on to include webcam support, so you can include your own face in the video.

EaseUS RecExpert can do HD screen recordings at up to 60 fps and save them in the most commonly used file formats. However, it does not offer much in the way of post-production editing. You can trim, watermark and insert intros and outros, but that’s it.

Availability: Free, with limitations, or $19.95 for the Pro edition

  • Excellent, capable alternative to QuickTime Player.
  • Includes support for recording system sound, which QuickTime Player lacks.
  • Easy-to-use controls for splitting and trimming video.
  • Limited post-production editing capability.
  • Free version allows unlimited recording, but only 1 minute playing time for final video.
  • Can’t add intros or outros unless you upgrade to Pro version.

➡️ Get EaseUS RecExpert

Icecream Screen Recorder for Mac

Another simple option for screen recording on Mac is the Icecream Screen Recorder app. Similar to its Windows cousin, Icecream Screen Recorder offers a free and paid version. It allows you to record your display, and even provides some basic drawing tools to spruce up your video while you record.

Unfortunately, the app is fairly unreliable, at least on modern versions of macOS. On my Mac Studio running macOS Ventura 13.2.1, I was entirely unable to get the toolbar’s Drawing tool to work. A major problem, I suspect, is that the app hasn’t been updated in six years or more.

That being said, if you need to do basic screen recording on a Mac running an older version of macOS, Icecream Screen Recorder could be the answer.

Availability: Free, with Pro version also available for $14.99

  • Simple to use for recording your entire screen or a portion of it.
  • Drawing tools to draw, add text or more as you record.
  • Available straight from the Mac App Store.
  • No post-production editing abilities at all.
  • Drawing tools don’t seem to work on newer versions of macOS.
  • Free version will only record for one minute.

Look to These Options for More Advanced Screen Recording Apps for the Mac

If you want an all-in-one solution to recording your Mac’s screen and editing it after the fact, there are options. While you could just open your recorded video in an editing app like Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro, you might prefer the simplicity of an all-in-one solution.

One of the most popular, I’m leaving out of this roundup. That’s OBS Studio , simply because it can be extremely daunting for the first-time user to pick up on. Plus, it’s more geared towards live-streaming than screen recording, even though it’s more than capable. It is, however, 100% free, so it’s worth at least a mention for the tech-savvy willing to learn it.

Even ignoring OBS Studio, there are several excellent choices.

Next up is TechSmith’s Camtasia, a tool available for both Windows and Mac. It offers you full screen recording capabilities, including the ability to connect your iOS device and record it.

With Camtasia, you can also include your webcam captures, easily setting up a Picture-in-Picture overlay. Techsmith provides a wealth of other features to integrate into your videos, such as quizzes and interactivity to encourage and measure learning, if that’s your thing.

Of course, this professional-grade software also offers a full range of post-production editing tools, just like ScreenFlow does. Split your video, trim it, or bring together multiple recordings onto the timeline. There, you can insert transitions, intros and outros, and more.

All of this does come at a cost, however. Camtasia offers much that Screenflow does not, so its price tag is heftier. Look to pay around $300 for this solution. That said, the price does include both Mac and Windows versions of the software.

Availability: $299.99, which includes support for both macOS and Windows versions of the app

  • Full-featured screen recording app for your Mac, Windows PC and even iOS devices.
  • Plenty of support for transitions, filters, effects and other post-production needs.
  • Interactivity and quizzing options you can embed in your video to make them more interesting and meaningful.
  • The app’s editing options can be overwhelming for those new to the game.
  • One of the most expensive options I’ve seen.

➡️ Get Camtasia

I’ve been using ScreenFlow for years, and love how feature-packed it is. With ScreenFlow, you can record from your webcam, microphone, as well as any display connected to your Mac. Yes, it will even record your system audio, crucial for many tutorials.

What’s more, ScreenFlow can also record your iPhone or iPad, as long as they’re connected to your Mac. Once the recording is done, though, you’ll be ready to do full post-production without switching apps.

In terms of post-production, ScreenFlow does almost anything you’d ask. It splits and trims your video with ease, offers a range of different transitions and effects, and more. Its timeline is very easy to understand and use, fully supporting multitrack video editing. In short, this is an excellent all-in-one solution for creating screen recordings and then editing them like a pro.

Availability: $169.99

  • Easy to use despite its powerful capabilities.
  • Records your Mac screen as well as a connected iPhone or iPad.
  • Full-featured video editing platform, complete with filters, effects, annotations and more.
  • As a professional solution, it’s expensive.
  • When a new major version is released, it becomes annoyingly adwarish until you pay to upgrade.

➡️ Get ScreenFlow

Finally, we come to TinyTake. On the surface, this is a really simple screen recording option for Mac or Windows. It allows you to capture whatever you see on your computer screen, or a region of it. It’s quick and easy to set up and get going, and if all you need is a simple screen recording … you’ll have that in no time.

After you record, though, TinyTake is a bit more robust. It includes several options for annotating your videos, from inserting arrows to drawing on the video. It also supports text overlays.

TinyTake differs from ScreenFlow and Camtasia in that it has a much simpler interface (and not as many bells and whistles.) You won’t find a timeline to work with, but you can drag and drop pictures and other videos onto your project.

TinyTake’s free version allows you to record for up to 5 minutes. Different subscriptions, ranging in price from $29.95 a year up to $99.95 a year, extend that limitation and add more features.

Availability: Free, with subscription plans for longer recordings and more features

  • Amazingly quick and simple to set up and start recording.
  • Free for videos up to 5 minutes, with good editing and annotation tools.
  • Supported on both Mac and Windows
  • No timeline for post-production editing.
  • Free version does include ads/promotions.

➡️ Get TinyTake

Wrapping Up: Plenty of Options for Screen Recording Apps on Your Mac

So, there’s a rundown of some of the most popular, best options for apps that help you do screen recording on your Mac. There are choices perfect for simple needs as well as more sophisticated, feature-rich options. You’ll also find a selection that meets your need at just about any price point, although keeping it free might mean a steep learning curve (I’m looking at you, OBS Studio.)

How to screen record on a Mac

How to screen record on a Mac 26

Screen recording on Mac is a great way to capture what ’ s happening on your screen, whether for a tutorial, demonstration, or to keep a video record. For the longest time, screen recording was a fairly complex task but things have changed dramatically in recent years.

With the release of macOS Mojave in 2018, Apple introduced a new native screen recording feature that allows you to record your screen . Although the screen recording feature, including within the Screenshot app, is good for basic screen recording, it lacks some advanced features that you can find in third-party tools, such as ScreenPal’s screen recorder for Mac .

You can use Mac’s built-in Screenshot tool to capture certain parts of your screen or your entire screen with or without audio. But you don ’ t have a lot of options for modifying the recorded content, using it to lead educational demonstrations and work presentations, or creating interesting how-to guides. If you want more sophisticated screen recording tools, you can count on ScreenPal ’ s advanced and free screen recorder for Mac .

This article will show you how to screen record on Mac using the native Screenshot Utility tool, as well as the free ScreenPal screen recorder if you are looking for more advanced features.

How to screen record on Mac with the built-in Screenshot app

safari desktop recording

macOS Mojave introduced a new native screen recording feature that allows you to record your screen without downloading any third-party tools. To access the feature, you need to open the Screenshot Utility tool by pressing Shift-Command-5 on your keyboard. Once you click on the New Screen Recording option, you will see numerous options, such as Capture Entire Screen, Capture Selected Portion, and Capture Selected Window.

The following is a detailed description of  how to screen record on a Mac with the default Screenshot Utility program:

  • Open the Screenshot Utility program by going to Applications > Utilities and clicking on the Screenshot Utility program. Alternatively, you can press Shift-Command-5 on your keyboard.
  • A small window will appear with recording options. From here, you can choose whether to record the entire screen or just a portion of it — the two screen recording options include Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion.

safari desktop recording

  • You can also choose to record audio from your computer’s microphone. To do this, click on the small arrow next to the “Record” button and select your audio input source from the drop-down menu. You can also select other options, such as a timer and whether you include the mouse pointer in the video recording. Try our free mic test to ensure your microphone is fully compatible with our screen recording software.

  • Once your recording settings are configured, click on the “Record” button to start recording. A small red recording light will appear in the upper right-hand corner of your screen to indicate that the recording is in progress.
  • To stop recording, click the Stop button on the Touch Bar on your keyboard.
  • Your recording will now be saved as a QuickTime movie file.

How to screen record on Mac with ScreenPal’s screen recorder

The following is a detailed description of how to screen record on Mac with the ScreenPal screen recorder:

  • Go to the ScreenPal website to launch the free screen recorder . If you already have a ScreenPal account, click on the Recorder icon in the upper right corner of your account where you can click Launch Screen Recorder.
  • Once the screen recorder window appears on your screen, you can select if you want to record your screen, webcam, or both. You can even test your webcam before you get started!
  • You can also select the max time for your video, the resolution for your video, and whether you want to activate computer audio and/or microphone narration. However, to add computer audio , you must subscribe to the Deluxe version of the tool.
  • Once you have selected everything, you can click the Rec button to start recording.
  • Once the recording bar appears on the screen, you can click the Pause button anytime. You can also go back to a specific time on the timeline box to re-record a part of your video, an excellent feature that allows you to rectify mistakes without starting over!
  • Once you’re done recording, you can click Done.
  • After completing the recording, you can save or upload the video , share it on social media platforms, or go to the ScreenPal editor to edit it!

Benefits of ScreenPal ’ s screen recorder

Apple ’ s default screen recorder is a great tool for recording your screen and sharing the recordings with others. However, using ScreenPal’s screen recorder has many benefits over the default Mac screen recorder.

ScreenPal is a more comprehensive screen recorder that offers several features and options that the default Mac screen recorder does not have. For example, ScreenPal allows you to record your screen and your face simultaneously, which can be great for tutorial videos or incorporating your own commentary into your recordings.

In addition, ScreenPal offers numerous editing features to improve the quality of your recordings. You can use the editing tools to remove any unwanted portions of your recording, add annotations or captions , or even insert images or other media. ScreenPal also allows you to share your recordings via email, social media, or a link that can be copied and pasted.

ScreenPal ’ s screen recorder is a more comprehensive and user-friendly option than the default Mac screen recorder. Below, we describe the features of the two platforms for your comparison and assessment.

Mac’s Screenshot screen recording app features:

  • Record area or full screen : The native Screenshot Utility tool allows you to record a video of your entire Mac screen or a small part of the screen. You can drag the mouse over the parts of the screen you want to record, which saves you from having to cut the screen later.
  • Screenshot area, window, or full screen : The Screenshot Utility tool allows you to take screenshots of a specific area of your screen, a specific window, or the full screen. If you want to capture a small area, you can drag the mouse to denote the parts you want to capture.
  • Timer options : Screenshot Utility allows you to stagger your screen recordings and screenshots by 5 or 10 seconds. You can select the screen recording option, set the timer, and then navigate to the area you want to start from.
  • Show floating thumbnail : This feature will reveal a floating thumbnail of the screenshot or screen recording at a corner of the screen, allowing you to access it directly and make edits, such as trimming and markups. This feature saves you from navigating to a separate folder to access the screen recording Mac.
  • Remember last selection : This feature will save your settings for future screen recording instances, so you don’t have to change the preferred settings each time.
  • Show mouse pointer : This feature will ensure that your mouse pointer is also visible in the screen recording or screenshot, which is useful for how-to tutorials and presentations.
  • Trim recordings : When you click on the floating thumbnail after screen recording on Mac, you will gain access to an instant editor that allows you to trim the unwanted sections from the video. You can trim the video instantly, which saves considerable time.
  • Audio selection : When recording your screen on Mac, you can decide if you want to record your computer’s audio.

ScreenPal’s free screen recording features:

  • Record your webcam : You can record your screen or your webcam footage or both simultaneously! This is an excellent option if you want to attach your front-view camera footage to the screen recording for a tutorial or presentation.
  • Record your screen : You can record your entire screen, a specific window that you’d like to display in your video, or a selected area of your screen.
  • Virtual background : Have a virtual background behind you while you record. This allows you to obscure what ’ s happening in your background, and it allows you to add some personality to your recordings. The virtual background can be anything you want.
  • Zoom in & out while recording : Zoom in and out while recording your screen. This is great for highlighting specific areas or for zooming into a particular window.
  • Trim recordings : Trim your recordings to remove any unwanted sections.
  • Crop recordings: Remove any unwanted sections of your video by cropping the video to focus on the important parts of your screen.
  • Captions : Add a captions file to your recordings.
  • Quick share : Quickly share your recordings to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google Drive, or via email. This makes the process of sharing your screen recording extremely easy.
  • Draw while recording : Draw on your screen while recording. This is great for adding annotations or for highlighting specific areas.
  • Create animated GIFs : You can create animated GIFs from your recordings, turning them into highly shareable and entertaining files ready for social media.

Tips for how to screen record on Mac

safari desktop recording

Screen recording is a great way to create a video tutorial, capture footage of a gaming moment, or even just record a video of your screen to post online. If you ’ re on a Mac, there are a few things you can do to make sure your screen recording is high quality. These tips work for all screen recording tools, including Screenshot Utility and ScreenPal.

Create a script and/or storyboard . This will help you know exactly what you want to record and how you want it to look. This way, you can avoid fumbling around with the recording software or forgetting important details.

Clean up your screen

Remove any unnecessary desktop icons, browser tabs, and files. This will help you avoid recording anything you don’t want and make the resulting video look more polished.

Free up system resources

Turn off any unnecessary apps and processes running in the background. This will help your computer run more smoothly while recording and prevent any lag or choppiness in the final video.

Wallpaper selection

If you’re recording your screen, you want to ensure that your wallpaper is appropriate for whatever it is you’re recording. You might want to consider a more professional-looking wallpaper if it’s for work. But if it’s for fun, you can go crazy and choose whatever you want! Make sure it won’t be too distracting when you look back at your recording.

Mute or unmute

Don ’ t have mute on if you want your Mac audio included in the recording. You can check this by clicking the sound icon in the upper-right corner of your screen and making sure the Mute icon is not highlighted. But if the video doesn ’ t require sound, you should hit the Mute button.

Check webcam background

If you ’ re using your webcam, check for clutter or items that might need to be removed. Consider blurring, removing, or replacing your webcam background with a virtual image. You want your audience to focus on the content of your screen recording and not be distracted by your background.

Save storage space

Screen recordings can take up a lot of storage space, so it’s important to delete them once you’re done with them. If you create a lot of screen recordings, you may want to consider hosting your video files somewhere else and deleting them from your Mac to free up space. You can also save space by deleting any unused programs, photos, or videos.

Start recording your screen on Mac!

Screen recording on a Mac is simple and straightforward. But if you want advanced features, such as the ability to add captions, obscure your background, or record your webcam footage, you can benefit from ScreenPal, a useful screen and webcam recording tool that allows you to record videos for free using sophisticated tools. You even have the option to upgrade to a paid plan for even more features, like accessing a stock library, video quizzing, storyboard and script features, and more.

  • Edit the macOS Screen Capture Source's transformation to set the size to zero width by zero height

Note : you can combine the new macOS Screen Capture Source audio with the other methods below for advanced control over audio.

The best screen recorders help you capture videos and images straight from your computer monitor. We put the top apps and software to the test to see which is best for recording your screen.

From capturing the entire desktop to grabbing an image from a single window, a screen recorder is a great way to let your audience see what you see. Whether you're presenting, streaming, gaming, or creating videos, they're a really useful tool, letting you add professional post-production polish to any stream. And there are loads of them around. That can make it difficult to know what's best for your uses.

We've tested the best free screen recorders - and now we're looking at the top paid options for capturing your display. As part of our review, we've compared performance and usability, explored support for webcam capture, picture-in-picture modes. For extra post-production polish, we tried out any video editing options and titling tools, as well as checking platform compatibility across Windows and Mac.

Screenshot of screen recorder Camtasia in action

1. Camtasia

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

TechSmith’s Camtasia is one of the best screen recording tools we’ve reviewed. It is as easy to set up as the developers could make it, the recording is flawless, the editing capabilities are incredibly powerful, and truly set it apart from most of the competition. The fact it works on both Macs and Windows is just icing on the cake.

As well as capturing what's on screen, this fully fledged video editing solution features plenty of extras and edits on top too. Whatever you want to record, from PowerPoint presentations to games, Camtasia performs well. You're given a huge amount of control over what's recorded. For example, you can strip out or include audio, or add a webcam feed. Annotations, extra media files, transitions, titles and more can then all be dropped in with your footage. And for all that, the top screen recorder never feels too overwhelming.

However, the best tools come with premium price tags. Camtasia is no exception, with a one-off lifetime license fee, and the option to subscribe for annual updates. Alongside the next major revision of the software, it also includes support and access to training videos. So, best for power-users and professional organizations.

This might indeed sound like a lot, but if you’re serious about screen recording, you should definitely give this one a try, and take advantage of its generous 60-day free trial (you only need to register a free account in order to download it and check it out). Read our full Camtasia review .

Best screen recorder for Mac

Extracted Audio

2. ScreenFlow

Apple macOS actually comes with some  of the best screen recorder tools built in – but ScreenFlow is a serious upgrade on what Apple's screen recording software can do on its own. Plus, it adds plenty of features and extra video editing tools.

With ScreenFlow, you can crop, pan, and zoom around different parts of your video recording. You're free to add annotations and callouts on top of the captured footage. It's a fully featured and intuitive video editor, as well as a comprehensive screen recording app.

As for the actual capturing part, it couldn't be any easier to use. Select your video and audio sources, and away you go. Footage from your webcam can be easily added into your main video, and the whole process is slick and streamlined throughout. A free trial is available.

Best free screen recorder

Pictured: Screenshot of OBS Studio's free streaming software

3. OBS Studio

OBS Studio is our pick for best screen recorder that's free and open-source - and with good reason: available on Windows, Linux, and Mac, the screen recording and streaming software lets you effortlessly blend different sources and audio tracks together, packing in professional-grade features typically only found in expensive, premium capture tools.

Built with gamers in mind, live streaming options feature prominently, but you can just as easily save your recordings to disk. On top of that you get advanced features like noise reduction (for your voiceovers) and the ability to set transitions between your scenes.

All of this is overkill if you just want to record a quick clip – and to the complete beginner, OBS Studio perhaps isn't the best screen recorder for you.

When we tested out the product recently, we thought it was a great tool, though hampered by frustrating design choices and minor glitches. We also felt the user interface could overwhelm newcomers to the software.

During our review, we wrote: "It’s a bit like you have to wrestle with its way of working, until you capitulate and have to work on its terms. It feels like there’s always one too many clicks to get the work done."

So, it's not as intuitive to set up or use as some rivals. But OBS Studio is free, open-source, and has just about every tool you need to make capture, stream, and create content. You just need to get used to the interface.

EaseUS RecExperts review

4. EaseUS RecExperts

EaseUS RecExperts offers one of the best screen recorders for Windows and Mac.

Packed with useful features, including a scheduler and GIF creator, the software can capture footage at up to 4K /60fps. That makes it a good screen capture tool for delivering presentations, webinars, gaming or just quickly showing how to perform a specific task on a computer.

When we tested out the screen recorder, we highly rated how easy it was to set-up and use. In addition to capturing your screen (or an area of it) and system sounds (if you select it), RecExperts auto-detects any connected webcams and microphones.

Because of this, you shouldn’t need to fiddle around in the settings to capture everything you need. It’s very straightforward, with an interface built for seamless navigation.

Unfortunately, like FlashBack Express, RecExperts offers no meaningful post-production editing  tools (you can trim, watermark, and add intros and outros, but not much else).

The free version of the tool is also little more than a trial - with a severe one-minute recording restriction. However, monthly and annual subscription plans offers unlimited screen capturing and all other tools.

Snagit screen recorder by Techsmith during our hands-on testing process

5. TechSmith Snagit

Techsmith’s Snagit is a versatile multi-platform screenshot tool with an extensive range of post production annotation capabilities.

You can also record your screen, including your webcam, and this is where the bulk of the improvements come in Snagit 2024.

The new features include being able to stitch clips together, giving you a form of rudimentary video editing, and alleviating the need to create the perfect video in a single take. There’s also a way to visually highlight your cursor, including a nice animation when you click on something, making it much easier for viewers to see and follow it. It’s also now possible to connect to Screencast, Techsmith’s online collaborative service.

It’s an excellent tool, well implemented, and brilliant. The screen capture side is improving nicely, if gradually, and might be more than enough in its current state if your needs are simple.

You can try Snagit for free for 15 days, and you can purchase it for $63, which includes a year of support and upgrades (further upgrades are $35).

Screenshot of Ashampoo screen recording software

6. Ashampoo Snap

Ashampoo’s Snap is a PC-only screen capture tool that aims to let you take images and videos of your desktop, and any software you might choose to run on it.

The image capturing side of things is great, with numerous options both before and after taking the shot, and the editor is filled with tools to let you customize your photo as much as you’d like.

By contrast, the video section feels more like a work in progress, with limited tools, and few options. Even the toolbar works in a different way here (it disappears when taking an image, but remains on the screen during video capture), making both sides of this software feel like two separate entities bolted together against their will.

Still, it is good value at $13 per year for three computers, or a one-off fee of $40 for a single device.

Best basic screen recorder

Website screenshot for Icecream Screen Recorder

7. Icecream Screen Recorder

Icecream Screen Recorder is ideal when you don't need the the hefty feature sets of the likes of Camtasia or OBS Studio. This screen capture software, available on Windows and Mac, is a more compact and friendly alternative - especially for those searching for the best screen recorder for low-end PCs. .

Fire it up, click the record button, select the part of the screen to record, and you're off.

Choosing your recording area and saving your footage couldn't really be any easier, though frankly, it's not the most precise tool. The screen recording software lets you draw on your footage, add a webcam feed, zoom during captures, and select final video quality.

The free version has limits - including a five-minute time restriction. Upgrade to the Pro version to end this, and access more output formats, convert between formats, add watermarks, and schedule screen recordings. All features that can come in handy.

Best screen recorder for ease of use

Website screenshot for TinyTake

8. TinyTake

TinyTake is a really simple screen recorder for Windows and macOS. It has all the features you're likely to need, none of the fluff you don't, and it's one of the best screen recorders when it comes to sharing videos and photos with others.

As for the main capturing process itself, once you've created an account (which isn't optional), you can be recording your computer screen in a couple of clicks. Map the area you want to capture, click the start button, and TinyTake effortlessly handles the rest.

And that really is all there is to it. Like Icecream Screen Recorder, it's a great if you're capturing on a low-end PC or laptop.

if you want to add annotations, or record anything longer than five minutes, you'll need to upgrade to the paid-for version of TinyTake. For simple screen recording and easy sharing to places like YouTube , though, it's ideal.

Best screen recorder browser extension

Website screenshot for Screencastify

9. Screencastify

Screencastify is a screen recording browser extension for Chrome - the perfect capture tool if you're running a low-end PC or don't want to install software on your computer.

Just because Screencastify is a Chrome add-on doesn't mean you're restricted to recording browser windows, although you can do that if you want. The tool is able to record in full-screen mode as well, and supports audio from your system or a microphone.

The extension is even smart enough to embed a feed from your webcam as well. On-screen drawings and annotations are supported, too.

So you've got lots of flexibility, even if you don't get quite as many bells and whistles as you do with other programs. To use the screen recorder without a watermark and for more than 10 minutes at a time, a paid upgrade is required.

We've also listed the best video editing software for beginners .

Best screen recorders: FAQs

What is screen recording.

Screen recording lets you capture the action happening in individual windows, the whole desktop, or selected area of your computer using software, an app, or a browser add-on. There are plenty of reasons you may need to capture your screen - they’re essential tools for content creators and live-streamers, but just as useful for sharing projects with colleagues, creating tutorials, or just grabbing content from a website for later use.

How do I record my screen on a PC or laptop?

There are two main methods for screen recording on a PC or laptop: dedicated software or a browser extension. Browser extensions are lightweight, and typically have limited options beyond which window or area you want to capture. As a browser-based tool, they work best when you’re connected to the internet. Screen recording software tends to offer a lot more options, tools, and control over your screengrabs. Many offer useful features like highlighting screengrabbed images and editing videos.

How do I screen record on my Android or iPhone?

Most modern phones have screen recording and screen capture tools built in. For example, on the latest Android phones, pressing and holding the power button lets you take a quick screenshot, with a screen recorder option tucked in the notification area. With it being this easy, casual users may not need a screen recorder app for their mobile device. Regular users, however, will find several great options in the App Store and Google Play Store - just make sure you trust the developer and check what data the apps capture.

How to choose the best screen recorder for you

When choosing which screen recorder is best for you, there are five main areas you’ll need to explore.

+ Use Identify what you need to capture. Some of the best screen recorders are ideal for a specific purpose - for example, OBS Studio is the best for recording games, but might not fit in the workplace.

+ Platform Decide which device is capturing footage. While most desktop options have screen recorders for Windows 10 and Mac available, you’ll need to find separate alternatives for iOS and Android.

+ Budget Work out how much your budget is. Top-end screen capture tools like Camtasia offer professional-grade recording and features, but those perks come at a premium.

+ Extras Many of the best screen recording software tools let you annotate, add text and cursor actions. Others come loaded with video editors. Find which has the tools you need included. Always check which parts of the screen can be recorded, and the output resolution and format.

+ Experience The best screen recorder is the one you enjoy using most - and that’s entirely subjective. Look for the capture app that best fits your workflow, needs, and experience level.

How we test the best screen recorders

Testing the best screen recorders, we start by assessing how well the software performs. During operation, we expect to see the very best screen capture tools running smoothly on the device it’s intended for; exported videos should play perfectly and stutter-free.

We evaluate how closely the screen recording software meets the needs of its target user-base. Those looking to record meetings have different requirements to Let’s Play-ers, and the software should be designed with those users in mind.

User experience, and the interface, is important. It’s about finding a balance between powerful features and intuitive use.

More complex recording software, like OBS Studio, should be accessible, even if the learning curve is steep, while streamlined tools like Screencastify and TinyTake should still properly record footage, even if the interface is simple or sparse.

The best apps also pack in plenty of features, to help craft professional-looking videos. We’re not simply looking for the largest toolset - users expect the largest useful toolset, with features that help them achieve their goals. Again, these should be clear and accessible to all users, and function above and beyond what’s expected.

(Safari Browser) How Do I Record a Video Using Safari on a Mac Desktop/Laptop Computer?

  • Last updated on April 4th, 2022 at 5:30 pm
  • Author techadmin

Safari on Mac desktop and laptops requires Adobe Flash to record videos, which often causes people problems.

We recommend using Chrome or Firefox to record a video on your Mac desktop or laptop.

To record a video in Safari:

alt text

Step 4 – After enabling Flash, the page may refresh. You may have to repeat steps 1-2 again (sorry, not our fault, Apple refreshes the page after enabling Flash)

alt text

Step 11 – Just to make sure we received the video successfully, check your email for a confirmation. It could take as long as 30 minutes to receive a confirmation email.

Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble enabling Adobe Flash, follow these steps.

Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac

You can take pictures (called screenshots ) or recordings of the screen on your Mac using Screenshot or keyboard shortcuts. Screenshot provides a panel of tools that let you easily take screenshots and screen recordings, with options to control what you capture—for example, you can set a timer delay or include the pointer or clicks.

Take pictures or screen recordings using Screenshot

On your Mac, press Shift-Command-5 (or use Launchpad ) to open Screenshot and display the tools.

The Screenshot panel.

Click a tool to use to select what you want to capture or record (or use the Touch Bar ).

For a portion of the screen, drag the frame to reposition it or drag its edges to adjust the size of the area you want to capture or record.

Click Options if you want.

The available options vary based on whether you’re taking a screenshot or a screen recording. For example, you can choose to set a timed delay or show the mouse pointer or clicks, and specify where to save the file.

The Show Floating Thumbnail option helps you work more easily with a completed shot or recording—it floats in the bottom-right corner of the screen for a few seconds so you have time to drag it into a document, mark it up, or share it before it’s saved to the location you specified.

Start the screenshot or screen recording:

For the entire screen or a portion of it: Click Capture.

For a window: Move the pointer to the window, then click the window.

When the Show Floating Thumbnail option is set, you can do any of the following while the thumbnail is briefly displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen:

Swipe right to immediately save the file and make it disappear.

Drag the thumbnail into a document, an email, a note, or a Finder window.

Click the thumbnail to open a window where you can mark up the screenshot or trim the recording , or share it.

Depending on where you chose to save the screenshot or recording, an app may open.

Take pictures using keyboard shortcuts

You can use various keyboard shortcuts on your Mac to take pictures of the screen. The files are saved to the desktop.

Tip: To copy a screenshot so you can paste it somewhere—like in an email or to another device —press and hold the Control key while you press the other keys. For example, to copy the whole screen, press Shift-Command-Control-3.

Screenshots are saved as .png files and screen recordings are saved as .mov files. Filenames begin with “Screenshot” or “Screen Recording” and include the date and time.

You may not be able to take pictures of windows in some apps, such as DVD Player.

best free screen recorder

Choosing the best screen recorder is crucial, primarily when you rely on it for various tasks like creating tutorials, recording presentations, or capturing gameplay. By selecting the suitable screen recorder that excels in each aspect, you can produce high-quality, informative, and engaging screen recording content.

To make an informed choice, let’s explore the key features and considerations when selecting a screen recorder to ensure it meets your needs. They include:

1. Screen Recording Quality

High-quality screen recording is essential for producing clear and visually appealing videos . Look for a screen recorder that supports resolutions such as 1080p (Full HD) or 4K for the best clarity.

4K resolution, with its 3840×2160 pixels, provides incredibly sharp visuals, making it ideal for recording detailed software demos, presentations, or gameplay.

If you screen record your desktop at 4K resolution, it ensures that every detail, from small text to intricate design elements, is captured precisely.

2. Audio Recording

Quality audio recording is crucial to accompany your screen recording. Ensure that the screen recorder allows for clear and distortion-free audio capture.

High-quality audio recording typically involves a sample rate of 44.1kHz or higher and a bit depth of 16 bits or more, ensuring that your voice narration or system sounds are crystal clear.

For instance, when recording a tutorial, having high-quality audio ensures that your explanations are easily understandable, enhancing the overall viewer experience.

3. Recording Options

Versatile recording options provide flexibility in capturing exactly what you need. Choose a screen recorder to record the entire screen, specific application windows, or custom-selected areas.

If you’re creating a software tutorial, you can focus on screen recording only the application window relevant to the tutorial, eliminating distractions and enhancing clarity.

4. Maximum Recording Length

Longer recording sessions are essential for capturing extended content like webinars , lectures, or lengthy gameplay.

For instance, a screen recorder with a maximum recording length of several hours is suitable for recording an entire online course or a marathon gaming session without interruptions.

5. Ease of Use

A user-friendly interface simplifies the system audio recording process, making it accessible to users of all levels.

Features like a one-click recording button and clear icons ensure that even beginners can start recording their desktop screen quickly.

6. Keyboard Shortcuts

Customizable keyboard shortcuts enhance the efficiency of the recording process, especially for power users. You can set up keyboard shortcuts or hotkeys like Ctrl+Alt+R to start and stop recording, allowing quick control over the recording and streamlining your workflow .

7. Background Recording

Background recording is essential for multitasking while capturing content without disruptions. You can record your desktop while working on other tasks or switching between applications, creating seamless tutorial videos.

8. Compatibility

Ensure that the screen recording software is compatible with your operating system, whether it’s Windows, Mac, or both, to reach a broader audience. If you’re a Windows user, choose a screen recorder compatible with Windows 10 to ensure smooth operation.

9. Support and Updates

Regular software updates and responsive customer support contribute to the reliability and longevity of the screen recorder. A screen recorder with a history of consistent updates and attentive customer support ensures that you can rely on the tool for years to come and that any issues are promptly addressed.

Price is an essential factor to consider when selecting a screen recorder. In the market, you will find paid and free screen recorders ; the best screen recording software will vary depending on your needs. Find a tool that fits your budget while still meeting your recording needs.

Consider whether you need a paid or free screen recorder, as options vary widely regarding features and capabilities. While a free screen recorder can be suitable for basic recording, investing in a paid screen recorder may offer better value in the long run if you require advanced features or plan to create content professionally.

  • Free vs. Paid Options : Many screen recorders offer free and paid versions. Free screen recording apps often have limitations, such as watermarked screen recordings or restrictions on recording length. Paid screen recording tools typically offer more features and flexibility.
  • Subscription vs. One-Time Payment : Some screen recorders are subscription-based, while others require a one-time payment. Subscriptions can be cost-effective for continuous use, while one-time payments offer a more upfront expense.
  • Trial Periods : Look for screen recorders that offer trial periods or money-back guarantees. This allows you to test the software’s features and performance before committing financially.

As we wrap up this journey through the captivating world of screen recording, remember that the power to ‘Record Your Desktop Screen with Audio’ is now at your fingertips. It’s a necessary skill that can transform how you communicate, educate, or entertain.

So, don’t wait any longer. Hit that record button, explore the advanced features, and let your screen come alive with captivating video recordings . Share your knowledge, entertain your audience, and leave your mark on the digital landscape.

McDonald's president hits back at claims Big Mac prices are too high amid inflation

safari desktop recording

The president of McDonald's wants you to know that $18 Big Macs are the "exception" and not the rule, according to an open letter released Wednesday.

Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s USA, addressed the letter to "our U.S. fans," saying he wrote the message to "make sure the real facts are available" to McDonald's millions of yearly customers.

"Recently, we have seen viral social posts and poorly sourced reports that McDonald’s has raised prices significantly beyond inflationary rates," Erlinger wrote. "This is inaccurate."

McDonald's executives have previously touted a "laser-focus" on value and affordability after complaints about overpriced food and decreased foot traffic led several fast food chains to scale back prices.

Not-so-happy meal: As fast food prices surge, many Americans say it's become a luxury

Protect your assets: Best high-yield savings accounts of 2023

"I can tell you that it frustrates and worries me, and many of our franchisees, when I hear about an $18 Big Mac meal being sold – even if it was at one location in the U.S. out of more than 13,700," Erlinger wrote.

"More worrying, though, is when people believe that this is the rule and not the exception, or when folks start to suggest that the prices of a Big Mac have risen 100% since 2019."

Franchisees own and operate more than 95% of all U.S. restaurants, said Erlinger, meaning menu prices are ultimately up to franchise owners who may raise prices to account for increased business and "inflationary pressures."

McDonald's exec refutes 100% price hike rumors

Regardless of the conditions of inflation, however, Erlinger categorically denies rumors that prices have increased by 100% or at a rate double or triple general inflation in the last five years.

The letter lists the average price of a Big Mac as $5.29, a 21% increase from $4.39 in 2019.

A myths and facts chart presented at the bottom of the letter addresses other specific claims, including the pricing of specific menu items (the cost of a 10-piece nugget meal has increased 28%, not 95.5%, since 2019), and more general assertions (the average McDonald's item has seen a price increase of 40% over the past five years, not double the national inflation rate.)

Fast food prices are up 4.8% since last year and 47% since 2014, while general inflation has risen 24%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A recent report by USA Today used survey information compiled by a team of reporters in 18 markets across the country to compare prices over the past 10 years. The survey found that an average medium Big Mac meal has risen in price from $5.69 in 2014 to $9.72 in 2024, an increase of about 70%. The price of a medium Big Mac meal ranged in price from $7.89 in Houston to $15 in Seattle.

$15 Big Macs: As inflation drives up fast food prices, map shows how they differ nationwide

The executive closed the letter by plugging upcoming savings promotions and the McDonald's app, saying, "more than 90% of U.S. franchisees are offering meal bundles for $4 or less."

"I hope you’ll see the programs we’re launching nationally and locally as meaningful to you," he said.

Fast food chains focus on affordability

McDonald's, like other fast food chains, has  faced criticism for soaring prices in recent years, resulting in less revenue from lower-income consumers and reduced foot traffic in stores.

McDonald's has since  promised a reduction in prices  and expressed interest in exploring more ways to win customers back, which could include $5 meal deals and freebies.

Burger King rushed to beat McDonald's to the punch, announcing its own $5 meal deal set to arrive in June.

This came around as Wendy's  announced a $3 breakfast combo , which includes an English muffin sandwich with egg, cheese, and bacon or sausage, and a side of seasoned potatoes. This is on top of  weekly free chicken nugget deals  through the Wendy's app and limited promotions, like a one-cent Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger from May 28 through June 2 for National Hamburger Day.

How-To Geek

Chatgpt desktop app vs. web app: what's the difference.

Getting a little closer to seamless chatbots on the desktop.

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI has released a Mac desktop app for ChatGPT, with a Windows version promised.
  • The desktop app is not offline but more convenient than the web version for heavy users.
  • App features like photo sharing and quick access make it a compelling upgrade.

OpenAI has released a Mac desktop app for ChatGPT, with a Windows version promised at some point in the future. What's so special about this app compared to the convenience of simply using the ChatGPT website?

What Is the ChatGPT Desktop App?

Unlike the ChatGPT web page, the desktop app is software that you install on your computer. In other words, you don't have to open your browser to use ChatGPT if you have the app installed.

However, this is not an offline version of ChatGPT. The app is still just a frontend for the cloud service provided by OpenAI. The vast majority of home computers wouldn't have the processing power to run the ChatGPT Large Language Model (LLM), even if OpenAI let us do it.

Think of it as similar to the Spotify desktop app. The app and website give you broadly the same experience, but some things are more convenient with a dedicated app.

Which Platforms Support the App?

As I mentioned before, as of this writing, the desktop app is only available for Mac users. A Windows desktop app is undoubtedly on the way, but there was no official timeline from OpenAI when I tried the app out myself.

RIght now, you have to be a paid subscriber, and can access the app download from the ChatGPT website account menu. Just click on your profile picture and select "Download the macOS App."

Then install the app just like any other Mac app. The app will eventually roll out to free users as well, but it seems OpenAI is taking a staggered approach.

Once you've opened the app, log in with your username and password, or with your Google account. Then you'll be presented with an app window like this.

What Are the Differences Between the App, Mobile App, and Website?

The first thing you should know, is that there are several promised features planned for the desktop app which are not part of the initial release. For example, the ability to give ChatGPT access to your webcam for live video isn't yet available as of this writing, though you can take photos with it. Likewise, the desktop app can't see a live feed of your screen, only manual screenshots. There's a more advanced version of the conversational mode on the way too.

Which brings me to the first major difference between the desktop app and the website. Until the release of the desktop app, only the Android and iOS apps supported voice questions or the dynamic conversational mode. With the desktop app, you can use either the microphone or headphone buttons to use your voice with ChatGPT. The headphone button will activate conversation mode, which is a hands-free conversational way to use ChatGPT.

The app also makes it easier to upload files from your computer, and to take screenshots directly into ChatGPT to use them in your prompts. These are things that you can already do using the website and your browser, but the app simply removes a few in between steps. If you use ChatGPT a lot, and make use of screenshots and file uploads all the time, then this simplified workflow will add up as saved time quickly.

For me, the headline feature of the app on Mac is its integration with macOS. By pressing Option+Space you'll bring up a prompt window, which means you can ask ChatGPT anything within a second no matter what you're doing on your Mac.

When to Use the App vs Website

I think, as it stands, most people will be fine just using the existing ChatGPT web interface. If you are a heavy user of ChatGPT, the app is a definite improvement to your workflow. Also if, like me, you have a bajilion tabs open in your browser, the desktop app is a godsend since you can access ChatGPT with a keystroke or instantly find it on the dock, instead of combing through tabs.

It's important to emphasize that while the web version and the desktop version are essentially the same at this point, there will be features coming to this version of ChatGPT which will undoubtedly make it much more compelling. I also wonder whether OpenAI can integrate the Windows version of this app as well as the macOS version seems to be, but we'll all have to wait until it's released to the public before we can test it.

I think the desktop app is a great option, and there's no reason for macOS users to avoid trying it out if they're eligible to use it. Maybe it's the polish you needed to make ChatGPT a proper part of your workflow, rather than a stone in your shoe.

How to record your screen in Windows 11

R ecording your screen in Windows 11 can be accomplished in more than a few ways, whether it's with tools built into the OS or with third-party software. Being able to record what's on your screen is incredibly useful, as it makes it easy to share content, share a specific problem (or a a potential solution), or capture gaming sessions to later share online.

There are many ways to record your PC's screen on Windows 11 , and we're focusing here on the built-in functionality of the OS as well as a third-party solution through ShareX. Let's dig into how to properly set up and use these tools so that you can begin recording your screen in Windows 11 right now.

Windows 11: Everything you need to know

Screen record on windows 11 using the snipping tool.

It took quite awhile for Microsoft to implement a proper built-in screen recorder, but it's now here thanks to an update to the Snipping Tool app. Previously, the Snipping Tool could only take and edit screenshots, but it can now record video as well. It's not as feature-laden as some third-party tools, but for most people, it provides a proper solution without the need to install extra software. Here's how to use it:

You can't record across multiple monitors using the Snipping Tool.

  • Launch the Snipping Tool app (you can find it in the All apps list in the Start menu).
  • Click the video camera icon to switch to video recording mode.
  • Click New in the top left corner of the window. You'll be prompted to choose a screen recording area.
  • Select a screen recording area by clicking and dragging your cursor. It can be any rectangular area, including the entire screen.
  • Click the Start button at the top of the screen. A three-second countdown will begin before the recording starts.
  • Click Stop to finish the recording when you're done.

As you can see, it's fairly simple to start a screen recording this way. As mentioned, it's not a very advanced tool, but this already allows you to do any kind of basic recording, and most people won't need more than that. It's especially useful for anyone who doesn't want to install extra software on their PC.

Record games on Windows 11 using the Xbox Game Bar

The Snipping Tool method laid out above is great for recording anything that happens in the typical desktop environment, but those who want to record footage of a game should instead check out the Xbox Game Bar's built-in recording utility. While it can certainly be used to record pretty much any app that's running on your PC, it's most useful for games, especially if you're playing in fullscreen mode. Here's how to use the Xbox Game Bar to record:

Windows desktop and File Explorer cannot be recorded with the Xbox Game Bar.

  • Launch the game or app you want to record.
  • Press Windows key + G .
  • Take screenshot lets you take a still screenshot.
  • Record last 30 seconds allows you to save the last 30 seconds of gameplay. This feature is only available for software that's recognized as a game (see below).
  • Start recording starts recording the game from the current point.
  • The microphone button lets you mute or unmute your microphone during the recording.
  • Click the Start recording button.

If you click the Record last 30 seconds button, the video will automatically be saved to your Videos folder.

  • Click Stop recording on the small bar that is visible when you are done. A pop-up will notify you the video has been recorded and you can click to view the video in the Xbox Game Bar. You can open the file's saved location from here too.

You can always press Windows + G to bring up the Xbox game bar again. To view your gallery, click the widgets button on the left edge of the bar at the top, then click Gallery . This will let you view all your recordings and screenshots. You can also find your recordings in File Explorer, in a Captures folder in your Videos library.

Recording with the Xbox Game Bar can get even easier by using the Windows key + Alt + R shortcut on your keyboard. This will start a recording right away, and you can use the same combination to stop the recording.

Setting up automatic recordings

In some games, it's hard to know when you're going to pull off a cool move or run into a memorable moment. That's why the Xbox Game Bar gives you the option to record the last 30 seconds of gameplay. The way it works is that the computer is constantly recording in the background, so when you want to save a moment, you can just use that option by pulling up the full Game Bar or by pressing the Windows key + Alt + G to immediately save what just happened.

The feature is enabled when you click the Record last 30 seconds button for the first time, and it's a good idea to do that before gaming so that you can just use it right away when you need to. But it only works for software that the Game Bar remembers as a game. If this button is greyed out for you, follow these steps:

  • Press Windows key + G to open the Xbox Game Bar while the game or app you want to record is running.
  • Click the S ettings icon (it looks like a gear) in the bar at the top of your screen.
  • Check the box that says Remember this is a game . It's in the General section that opens by default.

From now on, the Xbox Game Bar will always record that app or game in the background, and you can press Windows key + Alt + G to save the last 30 seconds.

Enabling this feature will increase system resource usage since the computer is constantly recording. It shouldn't have a huge impact on performance, but you might notice it on slower hardware.

Change your recording settings

If you want to tweak some of the recording settings for the Xbox Game Bar, you can do it in the Windows 11 Settings app. These settings include the video recording quality, duration, and more. Here's how it works:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Click Gaming in the bar on the left.
  • Record what happened : This toggle enables or disables the automatic recording of gameplay. You can expand this option to choose a few other settings, such as the length for automatic recordings (the maximum is 10 minutes) and whether automatic recordings should be enabled on battery power or while projecting your screen.
  • Max recording length : Changes the maximum duration for recordings you start manually (up to 4 hours).
  • Capture audio when recording a game : This toggle lets you enable or disable audio during a game recording. You can expand this option to choose the audio recording quality, your microphone and system audio volume, and whether background apps should be muted so only the game is audible.
  • Video frame rate : You can choose between recording videos at 30fps or 60fps . A higher frame rate requires more resources, so it can affect performance.
  • Video quality : Choose whether to record video with Standard quality or High quality. This may affect overall performance while recording.
  • Capture mouse while recording a game : Choose whether your mouse cursor should be visible on screen during recordings.

Screen record on Windows 11 with ShareX

While the built-in tools in Windows 11 do a pretty solid job of screen recording for most people, there are a lot of third-party apps that take screen recording to new heights. One popular option is ShareX. ShareX makes it easy to quickly start a recording using a keyboard shortcut, and it has a lot of advanced options for more experienced users. Here's how to get started with ShareX:

  • Download and install ShareX from the official website .
  • You might get a warning because some of the default hotkeys for the app overlap with system shortcuts. If you want to change your hotkey shortcuts, you can click Hotkey settings in the side menu. Hotkeys that conflict with system shortcuts will have a red square next to them. Screen recording shouldn't be affected, so you don't need to worry about this.
  • Closing the ShareX window will minimize it to the notification area in the bottom right corner of the taskbar.
  • ShareX will ask you to choose a recording area . You can click any window to record that window, or if you're on your desktop, you can click the background to record the entire screen. You can also draw a custom area by clicking and dragging your cursor to record a specific part of the screen. If you want to record the entire screen while an app is open, you'll also need to manually select the entire area.
  • Click the Stop or Abort button to stop recording. These options aren't visible if you're recording the entire screen, so you'll need to look for the red dot in your system tray area. Alternatively, you can press Shift + Print Screen again to stop the recording.

A pop-up will appear when you stop recording, allowing you to view your recorded video in your default video player. By default, videos are automatically saved in a dedicated ShareX folder in your Documents library. They save with randomly generated names, so you'll want to sort by date to make things easier to find.

Change ShareX screen recording settings (and add audio recording)

If you want to change settings like the frame rate of the video recording or if you want to record audio along with the video, you'll need to head into the app's settings. Here's what you need to do:

  • Launch ShareX on your PC. You can also right-click the ShareX icon in the notification area and choose Open main window .
  • Click Task settings in the side menu.
  • Click Screen recorder in the side menu of the new window that shows up. This menu allows you to customize the framerate of your video, set a delay for when recording starts, or set a fixed duration for screen recordings.
  • In the Sources section, you can choose what sources to record video and audio from. By default, the only audio source available is your microphone, if you have one. To record system audio from your PC, you'll need to click Install recorder devices . This option won't be available if you installed ShareX from the Microsoft Store.
  • Follow the installation process as normal, and you'll see your sources change for both video and audio. The video source will be screen-capture-recorder and the audio source will be virtual-audio-capturer . This will enable recording system sounds, and you'll need to change it back to your microphone if you want to record microphone audio instead. You can't do both at the same time, unfortunately.
  • Close all the open windows. You can now record your screen with system audio included.

These are the essential steps for recording your screen in Windows 11. With tools like ShareX, there's a lot more you can do, but we'll leave that up to you if you want to dive deeper into all the capabilities it offers. We mostly chose it for this guide because it's a free tool that isn't loaded with advertisements and restrictions forcing you to pay up.

Screen recording will work on any laptop or PC, but it can use significant resources, so if you have a very low-end PC, you may notice some performance issues, especially if you're trying to record a game. If your laptop is too slow to play games while recording your screen, maybe check out the best gaming laptops on the market right now. Those options are sure to have more than enough performance to handle screen recording.

Other screen recording options suggested by Microsoft

ShareX certainly isn't the only third-party software option when it comes to recording your screen in Windows 11. Microsoft actually suggests a couple of alternatives in its own screen recording guide for Windows.

The Screen Recorder for Windows 11 app is a popular app with free tier that offers a full range of features. Some in-app purchases available to remove things like watermarking and to extend recording time limits. A lifetime license for the premium features costs about $15.

There's also a great Screen Recorder Edge extension you can add to your browser for free. It allows for capturing your screen, your screen and camera, or your camera feed only. It's well-rated and has more than 300,000 users at the time of writing. Both the app and extension should work well across Windows 10 and Windows 11.

McDonald’s says $18 Big Mac meal was an ‘exception’ and news reports overstated its price increases

McDonald’s is fighting back against viral tweets and media reports that it says have exaggerated its price increases .

In a post on the company’s website Wednesday, McDonald’s U.S. President Joe Erlinger said reports suggesting the price of the average Big Mac has doubled since 2019 were false. McDonald’s said the average U.S. Big Mac was $4.39 in 2019 and now costs $5.29, a 20.5% increase.

“For a brand that proudly serves nearly 90% of the U.S. population every year, we feel a responsibility to make sure the real facts are available,” Erlinger said.

Erlinger acknowledged that he and many franchisees were frustrated by a post on X last summer about a Big Mac meal in Connecticut that cost $18, calling the price “an exception.” He noted that franchisees own and operate 95% of U.S. McDonald’s locations and set their own pricing but “work hard to minimize the impact of price increases.”

The average U.S. price of a Big Mac meal, which includes a sandwich, fries and a drink, currently is $9.29.

Still, the Chicago burger giant said the cost of some items have seen bigger price jumps than the Big Mac. The average price of medium fries was $2.29 in 2019 and is $3.29 now, a 44% increase.

McDonald’s said the average price of all menu items has risen 40% over the last five years, to account for a 40% average increase in the cost of labor, paper and food. That is higher than overall consumer prices, which have increased 21% since December 2019, according to government figures.

McDonald’s saw a marked slowdown in store traffic in the first three months of this year as inflation-weary customers in the U.S. and other big markets ate out less often. As a result, the company promised more deals.

Next month, McDonald’s is expected to introduce a $5 meal deal across the U.S. that will include a sandwich, a four-piece McNugget, small fries and a small drink.

Erlinger said he hopes customers will find the company’s upcoming deals “meaningful.”

“It’s clear that we — together with our franchisees — must remain laser-focused on value and affordability,” Erlinger said.
