Jewel Releases New Album ‘Freewheelin’ Woman’ Announces Tour with Train + Blues Traveler

Four-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter and “American Song Contest” competitor Jewel has released her 13th album  Freewheelin’ Woman. The album marks a stark transition in the singer-songwriter’s devotion to her career and the direction she wishes it to go.

Growing up on singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and eventually getting into some Muscle Shoals records, Jewel says that’s where she wanted her voice and writing to turn to on the album. When the Alaska native started her career, she was homeless and trying to desperately figure out what was going to work. Much like the Shoals records, she wants to return to music on her own terms and to cut her teeth on something with more grit and more bite. 

“When I first got signed, I was homeless and trying to figure out whether this was a career that could actually work for me,” Jewel says. “I knew that I wanted to be an artist, and that meant I had to be willing to grow, adapt, change, and go wherever I felt my heart needed to go—which often isn’t where managers or labels or even fans might say you should go. And I’m proud that now, at 47, I can look back and know that I’ve never done anything contrived for the sake of trying to be successful. Everything I’ve done, I did it because it was fun for me—and this record was  really  fun.” 

The new album is a celebration of the path Jewel has made for herself in recent years and a reminder that “taking the long way” to feel truly aligned with what you’re meant to do is a wonderful thing. 

“A lot of these songs have to do with overcoming something difficult and then celebrating that, or taking the long way around to get to the place that feels right to you,” she said. 

Jewel and her band will be touring with Train (featured on her recent single “Dancing Slow” ) and Blues Traveler this summer. The tour kicks off on June 8 in Mansfield, Massachusetts, with 35+ shows including New York, Nashville, Dallas, San Diego, and more before concluding on August 6 at the legendary Red Rocks venue in Colorado, Jewel’s home state.

Q&A: Jewel talks songwriting, acting and new projects ahead of New Albany show

Whether you are a folk-rock fan or a reality TV junkie, you are likely familiar with the music of Jewel .

Born in Utah in 1974 as Jewel Kilcher, the singer-songwriter first left her singularly poetic impression on listeners with her 1995 debut album, “Pieces of You.”

Since then, she has nourished her fan base with a series of acclaimed follow-ups, including “Spirit” (1998), “This Way” (2001) and “Sweet and Wild” (2010).

In addition to her recording career, Jewel has penned several books, commenced an acting career and even participated in (and emerged the winner of) Fox’s reality singing show “The Masked Singer.”

On Friday, Jewel will give a concert at the Charleen & Charles Hinson Amphitheater in New Albany . Ahead of the show, the 49-year-old singer fielded questions via email from The Dispatch.

Summer fun: Your guide to the big stars, festivals and other events coming to Columbus

Question: What can you tell us about your upcoming concert in New Albany?

Jewel: I don’t normally have a set list when I do solo-acoustic shows. Since it’s a full band show, we have somewhat of a set list, but the band learns extra songs so I can still go off-script. I like to feel the crowd and then decide what to play, but it will be a mix of old favorites and new songs from my album “Freewheelin' Woman.”

Q: You said in an interview with American Songwriter that, instead of mining your catalog of songs for 'Freewheelin’ Woman,' you wrote all of the songs expressly for the new record. What was your motivation in doing that?

Jewel: Two reasons: One, I wanted to write from the perspective of where I’m at now. Two, I’ve never written an album to showcase my voice and range, and I wanted to do that. 

Q. What is the songwriting process like for you? 

Jewel: It depends. I normally will sit down and start playing my guitar and write based on a strong emotion that comes up. Other times, I’ll be going about my day and a line will come to me, and I’ll put it in my notes or voice memos in my iPhone. 

Q. When you’re writing a song, do you hear yourself singing it?

Jewel: “ Freewheelin’ Woman” is the first time I wrote for my voice more, and it’s still very lyric-driven and singer-songwriter-y, but in the soul vein. My previous albums were all about storytelling and I didn’t actually write for my voice at all. 

Q: Among all of your records, do you have a favorite, or one that most closely matches your intentions?

Jewel: I love all of my albums because they represent different stories from my life. One I’m really proud of is “Lullaby.” I wrote it for my son and also myself because I wanted lullabies that I actually enjoyed, too! I had no record label — I did the whole thing in my own studio and rolled it out without traditional help. I’m really proud of that one. 

Q. You reached a whole new audience with 'The Masked Singer' in 2021. Why did you want to participate in the show? What was your reaction to walking away as the season-six winner?

Jewel: I love challenging myself and that felt like a new challenge ... singing covers. I never sing covers. I can’t read music, so doing a cover is hard for me. I tried to choose songs that would challenge me. It ended up being so much fun. As far as winning, I’m competitive, so I wanted to win, but going in, you don’t know who else is participating and you don’t really get to see their performances, so you don’t know what you’re up against.

Q. You co-starred in Ang Lee's Civil War film 'Ride with the Devil,' which came out nearly 25 years ago. You were great in the film. Do you have any favorite memories from making it?

Jewel: It was my first time acting and I was so nervous. I was having panic attacks and felt really out of my comfort zone. I realized that it was true I didn’t know how to act, but I could learn, so I dove into learning this new skill and (immersed) myself in it. I had a lot of fun on set because that’s something I’m always trying to do in my life — to learn and grow. 

Q. More recently, you starred as June Carter Cash in the 2013 Lifetime biopic 'Ring of Fire.' Do you think you will do more screen acting in the future?

Jewel: I don’t have any plans right now, but you never know. I’ve loved the acting roles I’ve taken on. Especially playing June Carter Cash. I became really close with the Cash family ... it was special. 

Q. What can we expect from you next?

Jewel: I’m working on a few things right now ... they’re in the early stages, so I don’t want to say too much, but I am in the studio. It just may not be for something you’d traditionally expect. I’ll leave it at that.

Jewel and Melissa Etheridge Announce Co-Headlining 2024 North American Tour

The two legendary singer-songwriters are going on tour across North America together this summer and fall

Two legendary singer-songwriters are hitting the road together this summer. 

On Tuesday, Jewel and Melissa Etheridge announced they’re going on a North American co-headlining tour throughout summer and fall 2024. 

The ‘90s icons will embark on two legs of their joint tour, with the first stint of live dates kicking off on July 11 in Bonner, Montana. The “You Were Meant for Me” singer, 49, and the “Come to My Window” musician, 62, will play along the West Coast, with stops in major cities like San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and others, before performing a few shows in the Midwest and wrapping up the initial leg on Aug. 7.

After taking a break through much of August and September, the hitmakers will hit the road once again on Sept. 17 with a show in Cary, North Carolina. Their final run will mostly consist of dates across the South, in cities like Charlotte, North Carolina, St. Augustine, Florida, Austin, Texas and more. 

According to a press release, fans can expect Jewel to play a setlist featuring songs from her recent 2022 album Freewheelin' Woman and hits from throughout her discography, like off her breakout, debut album Pieces of You .  

Etheridge will set out on the joint tour following her own headlining dates on the I’m Not Broken Tour. The Grammy winner’s solo tour will run throughout North America in the spring from March until late April, and then she’ll play a handful of shows in Australia in May, as well as a special performance with The Avett Brothers at Denver's Red Rocks Amphitheater in early July.

Last year, the “I’m the Only One” performer released her second book Talking to My Angels about her recent spiritual awakening and losing her son Beckett , 21, to an opioid overdose in 2020. Upon its release, Etheridge opened up to PEOPLE about the joy she continues to get from making art .

The rock star said, “I get so lost when I sing and play, and it’s such a release that it feels so good. I remember, ‘Oh yeah, this is what it feels like to feel so good. I’m just extremely grateful for it all.”

In a September interview with PEOPLE, Jewel also spoke about how grateful she is for her long-running career . 

“I made a decision, I think really young — by 20, 21 — to just say, 'I get to do whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want. I'm never going to succumb to the pressure of...'" the Grammy-nominated artist shared. "And so whether people like musical genres I did or didn't do, it was me. It was just me wanting to do whatever I wanted to do."

She continued, "I still feel that way. I feel really lucky.”

Ticket sales for Jewel and Etheridge’s co-headlining tour kick off on Wednesday with artist presales , beginning at 10 a.m. local time. The general sale will follow on Friday, launching at 10 a.m. local time.

The follow-up to Jewel’s self-produced and critically praised 2015 album Picking Up the Pieces, Freewheelin’ Woman finds Jewel working with producer Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Gavin DeGraw, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness), dreaming up a soulful and groove-heavy sound partly inspired by the classic R&B records made at Muscle Shoals.

“I cut my teeth on singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and got into those Muscle Shoals records a little later on, and for some reason that’s where my voice and my writing wanted to go on this album,” says Jewel, who recorded Freewheelin’ Woman live with a full band. Along with lending the album a gritty vitality, that approach helped to capture the unfettered vocal work she’s increasingly brought to her live show in recent years. On “Dance Sing Laugh Love”—the album’s uplifting and luminous centerpiece—Jewel’s vocals hit a particularly thrilling intensity as she shares her insight on living in resistance to cynicism.

“No More Tears” feat. Darius Rucker set the standard for the album’s illuminating quality. In its soul-stirring homage to those who’ve endured hardship of all kinds, the song unfolds in warm gospel harmonies and smoldering piano melodies, taking on an exquisite power as Jewel and Rucker’s vocals merge at the bridge.

A passionate mental-health advocate who struggled through a period of homelessness as a teenager, Jewel has been working alongside her Foundation, the Inspiring Children Foundation , for nearly two decades to provide mentorship and mental-health resources for at-risk youth. During the pandemic, Jewel expanded her outreach to help those in need build community and connection and, in turn, protect against the silent symptoms of COVID-19: anxiety, depression, and isolation.

Jewel Bio 

Jewel Kilcher was born on May 23, 1974 in Payson, Utah. However, her family moved to Homer, Alaska, not too long after she was born. Jewel began to pursue her passion in singing as a child. As a kid, she performed in multiple tourist spots in her native Homer. After her parents' divorce, Jewel lived with her father, and performed alongside the patriarch as he toured in several locations in America, as per All Music. 

As a teen, Jewel was a student in Intercholen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan. She got her initial opportunities in songwriting while she was a student in this school. After she graduated from Intercholen, Jewel moved to San Diego with her mother. After having been working for a while in a different occupation at this time, Jewel decided to pursue a full-time career in music. 

How Jewel Launched Her Professional Music Career 

After having regularly performing in the Inner Change coffehouse in Pacific Beach, Jewel soon acquired a loyal local fanbase. This opportunity led her to be signed on for a record contract with Atlantic records. Jewel's debut album, "Pieces of You" was released in early 1995. 

Jewel's Milestones as a Singer 

"Pieces of You" didn't reach the top of the charts right away. Jewel, though, worked hard in promoting her debut album, and didn't give up. The singer toured nationwide, with Atlantic records likewise releasing single versions off the musician's debut album, namely, "Who Will save Your Soul," "You Were Meant for Me," and "Foolish Games." The hits momentum of these songs gained a strong hold in 1996, more than a year after the release of "Pieces of You" album. 

"Pieces of You" eventually became 12-times platinum, and this accolade made it one of the best-selling debut albums of all time. 

Jewel Doesn't Have a Good Relationship with Her Parents?

Jewel candidly admitted that her relationship with her parents had taken a toll on her mental health. In a recent appearance in "Verywell Mind Podcast" with Amy Morin, the singer shared that her mother, Lenedra, stole over $100 million from her daughter while the former was her manager, as reported in Fox News. Jewel became buried in $3 million in debt, as a result of what happened. 

As a child, Jewel grew up in the hands of an abusive father. The "You Were Meant for Me" singer opened up, saying that her father was an alcoholic, who would hit her. 

Jewel shared her family story in her 2016 memoir called, "Never Broken."

35 year old Idaho native Eilen Jewell seems at home on stage when she performs, which makes sense seeing as she recently explained that she started songwriting as early as 6 years old.

Since then the singer-songwriter busked in Santa Fe whilst she was at college, performed at local bars and music clubs in Los Angeles and eventually was picked up and released her first album in 2005 “Boundary County” and in the space of six years, she released another four full-length albums.

Her music is a culmination of a variety of classic American styles, she manages to mix the blues with country, folk, honkytonk and gospel and a live performance of this is certainly a beautiful experience.

Backed by her band members Jason Beek, Johnny Sciascia, and Jerry Miller, Jewell manages, Jewell entered the stage in an elegant black dress, and wowed the crowd with faultless renditions of tracks such as "Only One" "Bang Bang Bang" and "Sea of Tears." She had everyone in the room impressed when she pulled out her harmonica and played that whilst strumming her acoustic guitar, and inbetween her beautiful songs, she had us all in the palm of her hands, as she engrossed us with her quirky anecdotes that related to the following track, making it a truly enjoyable experience.

Eilen Jewell is one of these artists and songwriters that, from a place far away, hits our nordic hearts with precise accuraty. One exakt bang!It is amazing that she is not born at Högalidsgatan! From Idaho she brings her dark ironic americana to our stockholmsouls. And we all have an empty box that now can be filled. And the band fills it! Playing so tight and concentrated. At the end giving us a new versions of old songs. Thank you all in the band! I will carry this into the dark month of november and still smile!And good luck on your tour!

I saw Eilen and her terrific band at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, CA, a couple of years ago and was absolutely smitten with her. She don't talk much on stage, but her songs and well chosen covers speak eloquently of love, longing, memory and sometimes down home blues.

I immediately got all her CDs...and recommend the "Live at the Narrows" recording as an introduction. If you can find it.

I wish her current tour would take her though New Mexico...but I'd be tempted to fly to Denver or Tucson just to see her again.

Went to Eilen this past spring in Rochester and Ithaca. Two months later did Cleveland then Pittsburgh. She's the best! After 20 years of García and Dead tours in the 80's and 90's, she's revived me! Just wish I could do European and Australian tours with them! Check them out whenever you can, you will not be disappointed!! Love her!

I went to Richmond without any pre-conceived notions and got totally blown away. The Eilen Jewell Band was more than excellent. Each of the members accent each of the others and they perform for the audience. They don't just play music...they are the music. The music, the venue, and mostly Eilen are worth driving across the planet for.

One word: Fabulous. Loved Eilen and the whole band. Jerry Miller may be the best guitarist I've seen, bar none, and I've seen many

. Highly recommended. See them if they come to your town!

Loved the show. Third time I saw her. She and Her band att great performers, which I wouldn't guess from listening to her albums. I love them too, but they are more timid and polished.

Fabulous show as usual. Did numbers from Down Hearted blues, her old stuff and 1 new song. Highly recommended for a great time. Blues and Americana at it's best. See them near you!
