Cars and pickup trucks at car cruises

Hot dogs, apple pie and car cruises can be found in Washington County, PA this summer.

Here’s a list, starting with the car cruises that are closest to Washington. See the Car Cruises 2022 article .

Meadowlands, PA

Eighty four, avella, pa., burgettstown, finleyville.

Car cruises are weather sensitive. People who spend many thousands of dollars and untold hours on their cars don’t take them out in the rain. Check the weather before driving to one.

The National Pike Steam, Gas and Horse Association includes displays of pickup trucks, semis and cars as part of their summer show, which takes place August 13 to 15.

We get a good number of the older cars, pickups and big trucks. Association President Bob Kelly

Their spring and summer shows aren’t car cruises. People will see a fascinating display of vintage farm and other equipment, a flea market, craft show and fair-type food that people go out of their way for.

Drive up to a car cruise. Admire some cars. Enjoy the music and food that’s usually at a cruise or nearby. But hurry – summer will be over before you know it.

Waterfront Car Cruise

western pa car cruises

Note: Traditionally held on Tuesday of PVGP Race Week we are shifting the Waterfront Car Cruise to Monday for 2024.

This is a large car show open to anyone who wants to show off their ride -that includes old cars, new cars, trucks and motorbikes. The car show is a fantastic place for auto aficionados, hot rodders, gearheads, car crazy people as well as families to gather for a few hours and enjoy the cars, the people and the stories.

$10 Donation at the Entrance

There is no pre-registered entry. Please make your $10 donation as you enter the event. The PVGP is one of the area’s largest charity events and the Cruise is a fundraiser for our autism charity partners so we ask cruisers to make a $10  donation for our charities. A PVGP Race Program will be given for each donation.

Please contact the Grand Prix’s Cruise event captain  Don Privett  with any questions about our car cruise.

Cruise Rules We strive to provide a safe and friendly evening for all and we ask our visitors to abide by some simple rules:

  • There is NO saving spaces  – the event fills up almost every year so saving a spot for a friend is not permitted. If you want to park together we suggest you arrive together.
  • PVGP volunteers will direct you to your parking space
  • Pop-up canopies are not permitted in the cruise area
  • Alcoholic beverages or the consumption of such is strictly prohibited on the premises.
  • For Sale signs and solicitation of vehicles is not permitted.
  • NO solicitation of ANY kind except by approved vendors.  Click here for information  on becoming a vendor.
  • NO burnouts! We appreciate horsepower as much as anyone, but a crowded shopping center parking lot is not the safest place to do this. If you really want to lay down some rubber why not get a competition license and become a vintage racer!
  • Pets are permitted if on a leash and under the control of the owner. If in the opinion of the PVGP, a pet presents a danger or nuisance to others, the pet owner and pet will be asked to leave.

Our Pit Stop Feature Story:

Cannonball run.

The Cannonball Run, A.K.A. “The Secret Race Across America,” was conceived by automotive journalist Brock Yates and Car and Driver editor Steve Smith. It was intended as a protest against the strict traffic laws and speed limits imposed during the 1970s. Yates wanted to prove that you could “drive quickly across the country in normal traffic without disrupting anyone or being unsafe.”

The race was named after Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker, who in the early 20th century became famous for his record-setting drives. In 1933, Baker set out from New York City in a Graham-Page Model 57 and arrived in Los Angeles 53 hours and 5 minutes later - a record that would stand for over 30 years. The media referred to this record as the Cannon Ball Run. It was this legendary run that Yates and Smith decided to name their protest after.

The first Cannonball Run took place in May 1971. The race had no official route and participants could choose their own path across the country. The objective was simple: get from coast to coast as quickly as possible. Following the success of the first race, several more Cannonball Runs were organized in the early 1970s. The second race took place in November 1972, with a winning time of 37 hours and 16 minutes. The last official Cannonball Run was held in 1979. This time, the winner was a Jaguar XJS driven by Dave Heinz and Dave Yarborough, completing the race in 32 hours and 51 minutes. The run traditionally began at the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan, New York, and ended about 2,800 miles later at the Portofino Hotel & Marina in Redondo Beach, Calif.

Currently, the Cannonball Run record stands at 25 hours and 39 minutes. Set in 2020 by Arne Toman and Doug Tabbutt, this feat was achieved with an average speed of 113 miles per hour, far exceeding any legal speed limits across the United States.

Despite its illegal nature, the Cannonball Run is far from being a chaotic or reckless endeavor. The drivers who take on this challenge are known for their meticulous planning, acute attention to detail, and diligence. These racers balance a blend of daring and discipline, making the Cannonball Run a testament to both skill and audacity in the realm of automotive adventure.

Classic cars will cruise down main Erie street on Friday. What to know

western pa car cruises

For the 15th summer in a row, a car show is coming to downtown Erie.

Contemporary Motorcar, at 4910 Peach St., will sponsor and host CruiseTown Erie in the heart of downtown Erie on Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. This is a no-charge classic car show for both participants and spectators.

The show will take place on State Street between Fourth and 12th streets. State Street will be closed off to regular traffic after 6 p.m. when the show begins.

“There used to be a downtown Erie cruise 15 years ago,” George Lyons, owner of Contemporary Motors said. “(Former) Mayor Joe Sinnott asked me if I would run it that one summer for them. He wanted it to continue, as it’s a great event for the downtown area. I took it over for that one year and the next thing you know here we are at 15 years.”

The event will be held if weather permits, Lyons said. Good weather often brings a good crowd, he said.

The cars displayed on State Street

The event will have classic cars on display that were made from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and later models.

Attendees will find both original and modified cars lined up on State Street, along with performance cars of all types, including sports cars, imported cars and trucks.

CruiseTown brings in all kinds of spectators

Car enthusiasts aren't the only ones who enjoy the show.

“We get a lot of families, senior citizens and everybody you could imagine from the City of Erie coming down for the free event while seeing all the classic cars of all types on display in those areas,” Lyons said, adding that the event typically showcases between 700 to 800 vehicles.

More: Juneteenth in Erie: Celebrations include annual Block Party, Cookout Cruise and art

Next CruiseTown show is Aug. 9

Contemporary Motors is planning another CruiseTown Erie event at the same location on Aug. 9 running at the same time.

“Contemporary Motor Cars absorbs all of the costs of this event as a chance to give back to the community,” Lyons said. “We’ve been in business for 30 years. We do business with a lot of people who do appreciate great cars both new and old. We feel this is a wonderful way to say thank you and to promote our wonderful downtown area.”

See chrome for miles as weekly car cruise at Richland Mall revs up for the season

Tony LaRussa

Car enthusiasts can get their fill of mirror paint, gleaming chrome and souped-up engines every Thursday evening at the car cruise in Richland Mall featuring classic, vintage and collectible vehicles.

The weekly event, which runs from 4 to 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, is sponsored by carcruises.com and Zamigas Properties , which operates the mall and other local venues where the organization’s cruises are held each week.

“I’ve loved cars ever since I was a little kid,” said Vito Capaccio, who founded the car cruise website in 2000. “Before the internet, we had to rely on printed lists to find local car cruises, so I could see the benefit of listing all the events going on in a single place.”

The website provides information about car cruises across the United States.

Capaccio said cruises can be more than just a chance to see dream cars up close.

“Cars are something that can bring people of all backgrounds, ages and experiences together,” he said. “Cruises are just as much a social event as an opportunity to see some really fabulous cars.”

In addition to the cruise in Richland on Thursday evenings, Capaccio organizes the following cruises throughout the week:

• Mondays: Kings Family Restaurant, Monaca

• Tuesdays: Kings Family Restaurant, Greensburg

• Wednesdays: Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills

• Fridays: Union Square Shopping Center, New Castle

• Saturdays: Murrysview Shoppes, Monroeville

• Sundays: Sonic Drive-In, McMurray
