3-Day Kruger Safari Tours

The Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s great safari destinations. Extending over 19,485km²/7,523mi², it is one of the largest national parks anywhere on the continent, and home to 150 mammal and more than 500 bird species. When it comes to the Big Five, Kruger is a key stronghold for both species of African rhino, and it also supports immense herds of elephant and buffalo, and some unusually relaxed big cats. A 3-day Kruger safari provides a great opportunity to get a good look at South Africa’s most popular national park, and to enjoy a sampling of its varied wildlife. Be warned, however, that once you have visited Kruger and caught the safari bug, you may well want to return one day for a longer safari.

6 Questions About 3-Day Kruger Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

3 day south africa safari

Is 3 days enough time for a trip in Kruger National Park?

“Absolutely. Three days is sufficient to get a decent feel for Kruger’s landscapes and to see a good selection of its wildlife, though it will restrict you to exploring one small area of this vast park. That said, if it is possible to spend longer than 3 days in Kruger, I would give it serious consideration. Additional time in the park will allow you to explore it more thoroughly, and every extra game drive improves the odds of seeing elusive species, such as leopard, cheetah, African wild dog and rhino.”

Is it better to fly or go overland to Kruger?

“As a rule, it’s more efficient to fly, especially for a short safari. Kruger is about five hours’ drive from Gauteng (which includes Johannesburg, Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport), so the return drive will eat into your safari time. That said, many Kruger tours do start and end in Gauteng, and this has its advantages too. Driving is generally cheaper, and you will see some interesting countryside en route. And, with an early start, you’ll be in Kruger for lunch. Kruger is further from seaside destinations such as Durban, Cape Town or the Garden Route, so traveling overland isn’t a realistic option unless you’ve enough spare days to treat it as a road trip. One situation where driving into Kruger is clearly preferable is if you’re already staying close by, for instance in Mbombela, Hazyview or Hoedspruit. It also makes sense to drive if your Kruger safari is part of a longer road trip through the likes of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) or northern KwaZulu-Natal. If you decide to fly, several different airports service Kruger, and your best choice will be influenced by where you’ll be staying. The busiest flight hub is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which lies outside the national park, but offers good access to southern Kruger via Numbi Gate (40km/25mi) or Phabeni Gate (60km/36mi). Useful alternatives include Skukuza Airport, which stands inside the park close to Skukuza Rest Camp, and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, which is near central Kruger’s Orpen Gate.”

What accommodation can I expect?

“Accommodation options are wide open on a 3-day tour to Kruger. More than a dozen rest camps offer the choice of camping or staying in a comfortable self-catering bungalow. Some safaris stay outside the park, at one of several lodges that lie close to an entrance gate. These accommodation options include simple backpacker lodges, smart chain hotels and owner-managed boutique properties. In terms of pure value for money, accommodation options outside the park are generally preferable. Personally, given the choice, however, I would always stay within the park. This allows you to enjoy the memorable experience of being in the bush at night. It also leaves you better placed for game drives in the early morning, when carnivores are most active. At the top end of the range, several private game lodges stand in concessions within Kruger, and many more can be found in the various private reserves that share open boundaries with the national park. These all-inclusive lodges tend to be small and luxurious, and to place a strong emphasis on quality wining and dining. In private reserves and concessions, guided game drives in open 4x4s are the norm, and you’re likely to enjoy better big cat sightings than you would on public roads.”

Which animals am I likely to see on a 3-day Kruger safari?

“On any tour to Kruger, you stand a good chance of seeing all the Big Five and many other iconic African savannah creatures. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog and hippo are all but certain, together with a varied selection of antelope including wildebeest, greater kudu and impala. On a 3-day safari, lions are very likely, as are spotted hyenas and jackals, but leopard and cheetah are a little less likely. Kruger is an important stronghold for both rhino species: the larger and more placid white rhino is common and very likely to be seen over the course of 3 days, but you would be very lucky to see the more scarce and secretive black rhino. Kruger supports excellent and varied birdlife and you can expect to see heavyweights, such as ostrich, southern ground hornbill, saddle-billed stork and various vultures and eagles.”

How do I avoid the crowds in the park?

“The best way to dodge the crowds in Kruger is to avoid the public area south of the Sabie River. The majority of rest camps are concentrated in this southern sector, and it’s also the main area utilized by day safaris. The payoff is that southern Kruger offers the most reliable wildlife viewing in the park, and your best chance of spotting all the Big Five on a 3-day safari. Within Kruger’s southern sector, traffic is heaviest around Skukuza, the largest rest camp, so a good compromise is to stay at smaller rest camps such as Lower Sabie, Crocodile Bridge or Malelane. Another good compromise would be to stay in central Kruger, staying at a rest camp such as Satara, Olifants or Letaba. Central Kruger also offers good wildlife viewing, but it is seldom as crowded as the far south. The area north of Letaba is even less crowded, but wildlife viewing tends to be slow, so it is not recommended for first-time visitors. If you are not restricted by budget, think about staying at a private reserve bordering Kruger (for instance MalaMala Game Reserve, Sabi Sand Game Reserve or Klaserie Nature Reserve), or a concession lodge within southern Kruger (these include Shishangeni, Lukimbi and Rhino Post safari lodges). These exclusive variations on the Kruger experience take guests on guided 4x4 safaris through areas that are rich in wildlife but closed to the general public. Kruger attracts a high volume of domestic visitors, so it’s best to avoid long weekends and local school holidays.”

How much does a 3-day safari in Kruger National Park cost?

“The price of a 3-day Kruger safari depends on whether you stay inside or outside the reserve, and whether you camp, stay in budget rest camps, or go for more luxurious accommodation. Typically you will be looking at around US$650 per person at the lower end of the price scale, US$900 to US$1,000 in the mid-range, and US$1,200 to US$1,600 or upwards for a more luxurious and exclusive experience in a concession lodge or private reserve. Kruger is also well suited to self-drive visits, which usually work out more cheaply than guided safaris. The negative of self-driving is that you’re unlikely to see as much wildlife as you would with an expert guide, but it does offer a greater sense of autonomy.”

South Africa is one of the very few places on Earth where you’re able to tick off all of the Big Five in one day, never mind a 3 day safari here! Visitors will be blown away by the size and number of elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes and much more you’ll find in the wild.

After a long day of exciting game drives in Kruger National Park or Phinda reserve, sit back and relax with an evening cocktail on the timber balcony of your lodge overlooking a watering hole. South Africa truly has some of the continent’s finest food, dining, accommodation and service.

The best 3 day South Africa Tours

Price of a 3 day south africa safari.

Expect a starting price of $650 per person for a 3 day South Africa budget camping tour, going up to $900 per person for a mid-range lodge tour. Luxury tours start at around $1,300 per person.

Safari packages to South Africa span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury. Shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 3 day trip you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but these are considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is a 3 day safari in south africa sufficient.

3 days is plenty to see, hear and experience the incredible wildlife and sights of South Africa. The number of days needed to properly do a South Africa safari can range from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on how much time and budget a visitor has.

A longer period of time would be better, however each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. On a 3 day trip you can even break up the drive to parks like Kruger with an overnight stay in Phinda Game Reserve or MalaMala Private Game Reserve .

Alternatively you can spend all of your time in the famous Kruger National Park . With full days at the reserve, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore this iconic safari destination including a full-day dusk-to-dawn game drive that will include lunch at one of the picnic spots.

Morning and evening game drives are rewarding as well, but on a full day you can get further into the reserve, away from the more-crowded areas. Overall, 3 days is a good amount of time for a safari in South Africa if it is part of a larger tour, but if not, allocating a few more days to your safari would be ideal if possible.

Accommodation offered on a 3 day South Africa safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible South African landscape and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation South Africa has to offer. The accommodation here is stunning with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

From camping in the bush with amenities to mid-range and luxury lodges, there’s something for everyone here. Of particular note include the renowned Jock Safari Lodge in Kruger where guests can experience an old world safari with luxury suites, private decks, plunge pools and sightings from the lodge.

Go fishing, walking or hot-air ballooning before enjoying an outdoor bath and sundowners and dinner in the bush.

Must do on a 3 day South Africa safari

The most popular option for a 3 day South African safari is Kruger National Park. Most visitors fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) near Johannesburg and take a connecting flight to Kruger airport.

Kruger NP is a popular self-drive destination. You can also hire a car in Johannesburg and drive to the park. The park has nine entrance gates, the closest of which, Numbi Gate, is 375km/235mi from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. The drive takes at least four hours.

With nearly 2 million hectares of unrivaled habitats, Kruger offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the very best in Africa. All of the continent’s iconic safari species – elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, zebra and so much more.

Visitors can find over 12,000 elephants, 27,000 African Buffalo, 2,000 leopards and 2,800 lions and it is also regarded as the best place in the world to see a leopard.

Phinda Private Game Reserve is another incredible wildlife destination located in KwaZulu-Natal, the reserve is a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest. Another notable feature is its location, in close proximity to the unspoiled beaches and spectacular coral reefs of the Indian Ocean.

Animals on a South Africa safari?

You’ll find just about everything in South Africa! The country is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find Wildebeest, Diceros, Impalas, Dik-diks, Impalas, giraffes, hyenas, African wild dogs and many more.

Endlessly intelligent and iconic, African elephants continue to capture the hearts of travelers to South Africa. Kruger National Park offers excellent wildlife viewing in general and the scenic KwaZulu-Natal parks are best to see rhinos. In Sabi Sand, the main focus is on seeing the Big Five and it is famous for its habituated leopards.

Other animals to be viewed on a South African safari include hyenas, giraffes, hippos, zebras, African wild dogs, crocodiles, wildebeest, kudu, warthogs, springbok and cheetahs.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, some 280 kilometers north of Durban, is home to over 84 mammals and 350 – 400 bird species as well as the Big Five and cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, hyenas and many more iconic species.

How much spending money do I need for a 3 day South Africa safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $300 for a South Africa safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. South Africa safaris can be more expensive than their continental counterparts due to the higher costs of accommodation and food.

What animals will I see on a 3 day South Africa safari tour?

Visitors on a 3 day South Africa safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 3 day South Africa safari?

The best time to visit South Africa is from May to September, as the cooler winter months in the north bring superb conditions for viewing big game. With an overall moderate climate, South Africa is however considered a great year-round safari, wine and beach holiday destination.

Kruger National Park 3-Day Safari | What to Expect

Since the park was established in 1898, it has become the cornerstone of nature conservation in South Africa.

 • The park boasts about 140 mammals, from the Big Five to leopard tortoises and rhino beetles.
 • Around 500 bird species—including the fish eagle, hornbill, and various vultures and owls—can be spotted throughout the park.
 • You could try your luck at spotting one of the 110 different reptile species, like snakes and lizards.
 • There are also 330 types of trees in the park.

The Kruger National Park is about as large as Wales, covering just under 20 million hectares of land. However, the animals that live here are not the only drawcard. There are private lodges, public campsites, and activities in the surrounding areas that will make any 3-day Kruger safari fun and family-friendly.

While bumbling through the bush, you’re also invited to visit some archaeological sites where African culture and the history of ancient San and Zulu settlements are preserved.

 • You can visit Thulamela in the north
 • View the Prospectors Grave close to Skukuza Camp
 • Masorini Archaeological Site, 11km from the Phalaborwa gate

3 Days in Kruger National | Itinerary

Planning a Kruger National Park itinerary can be exhausting. You’ve got to figure out accommodation, transport, food, activities, and much more. To make your life a little easier, we’ve set out a guide to spending three days in this magical park.

3 days in Kruger could be an addition to your South African adventure or a holiday on its own. To squeeze every drop of excitement out of your trip, you might want to consider taking a drive from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park.

The distance from OR Tambo Airport to Kruger National Park is 263 miles, a 5-hour drive. Some tours like this full-day tour offer a pick-up and drop-off service from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park . If you’re driving yourself, you might want to check out some of the reserves around Johannesburg as an introduction to your ultimate Kruger National Park trip.

No two game reserves are exactly the same. Visiting one or two of them might introduce you to some cool creatures that you might miss going to only one park.

elephants-walking-down-road-in-krugar-national-park

Johannesburg has some beautiful places like:

 • Pilanesberg (Just over 3-hours drive from OR Tambo International Airport) has a stunning tour with pick-up from Johannesburg
 • Moreleta Nature Reserve (30-minutes drive away from the airport)
 • Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve (35-minutes from the airport)

After a drive out of Johannesburg and through parts of the Kruger National Park, you deserve a delicious cocktail (or mocktail). Get out some board games and let the competition begin. Or you might want to start a fire and get some marshmallows roasting as a sweet treat to end off a pretty spectacular day.

Today is the day that you wake up to birds chirping, breakfast cooking, and hopefully, some lions roaring near your camp or perhaps your 5-star Kruger lodge . You’ll have an entire day to cruise through the park.

impalas-in-green-grassland-south-africa

Once you’re dressed and ready at (literally) the break of dawn, you’ll head out for yet another game drive. Morning safaris are quite fruitful as many Kruger National Park animals are out and about preparing for their day ahead of the harsh midday sun. Unlike humans, animals always look cute when they wake up — go and see for yourself.

Hopefully, your trusty guide will be able to spot some tracks and lead you to the animals you’d like to see. All the guides are well clued up on the way things work out in the bush, so do not hesitate to nerd out and ask them as many questions as you can think of.

If you’ve opted for a full-day safari , you’ll most likely refuel at some of the restaurants and shops before heading out for the second part of your day.

Midday usually brings some of the animals out to the watering holes for a quick drink. Get your Instagram stories ready for a few pics of the hunters and the hunted sharing the same body of water.

On your third day, you can sit back and relax. There’s still time to fit in an extra afternoon safari . One day around the block is not always enough, and you might see some other animals that you hadn’t seen the day before.

Once you’re back home, you can take out your book and relax. Or, you can head down to the swimming pools at the Berg-en-dal camp, Olifants, Orpen, Lower Sabie, or Skukuza Camps and catch a tan under the African sun.

After your trip to Kruger National Park, you’ll feel relaxed, humbled, and happy that you’ve taken the time to visit.

Kruger National Park Safari Prices

For a self-drive day trip, you’re looking at around $27 for entry into the park. This allows you the entire day within the gates and use of basic public facilities. Camps in Kruger park range from around $22 to $550, depending on the season, accommodation type, and the number of guests.

There are also some Kruger National Park all-inclusive packages which vary from one-day trips to three-day trips. You can mix and match to perfect your ideal itinerary.

Traveling to Kruger National Park might seem confusing at first if you’re from elsewhere but South Africa. We promise it’s simple. We’ve got everything you need to know about how to get to the Kruger National Park.

Distance from Cape Town to Kruger National Park

While a Cape Town safari will whet the whistle, the ultimate trip from Cape Town to the Kruger National Park is almost 1800 kilometers worth of traveling.

In Cape Town, you’ll find yourself in the southernmost part of the country with some incredible South African vacation attractions. If you’re driving, it will take you just under 19 hours to arrive at the Kruger National Park. The fastest route along the N1 National road takes you through the Karoo and once you get closer to Johannesburg, you’ll see a lot of farm towns.

It’s worth noting that South Africa will feel a lot slower than what you might be used to. So, this is the time to unplug and enjoy the scenery that this magnificent country has to offer you.

Once you get past Bloemfontein (about 621 miles away from Cape Town), you’ve got two choices before reaching your final destination. You could either drive through bustling Johannesburg, or take the road less traveled and see some of the lesser-known farm towns like Bethlehem, Standerton, and Barberton.

Once you reach Kruger Park, you’ll most likely enter through the Malelane Gate on the southern side of the park. It’s only about 24 to 30 miles away from the Skukuza Main Camp (distance varies based on the route taken).

If you prefer to fly, you could set off from Cape Town International Airport to Johannesburg, or to one of the airports in the surrounding area such as Hoedspruit Airport or Nelspruit Airport. This trip takes you roughly two and a half hours.

Kruger National Park Airports

If you’re hoping to spend as little time on the road as possible, a flight from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg will have you reach the park in about an hour.

There are three major airports serving Kruger National Park visitors. Each one—except for the Kruger Park Gateway Airport—is about an hour’s drive away from the main entrances to the park.

 • Kruger Park Gateway Airport is situated just outside of the park and is closest to the Phalaborwa gate. Once you’re on Letaba road, you’re only 5 minutes away from the gate.
 • You can also choose to land at the Hoedspruit Airport and drive for about an hour before reaching the Phalaborwa gate. It’s worth noting that there are a few other nature reserves along the way, such as Lekkersmaak Game Reserve, Olifants North, Olifants River, and Tshukudu Game Reserves.
 • The final option is the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (previously known as Nelspruit Airport).

3 Day Kruger National Park All-Inclusive Packages

With this all-inclusive tour operated by Viva Safaris, you’ll only have to plan your way into the country and set aside 3 days for a Kruger safari.

This tour sets you back by about $593 USD, although we feel that spending two nights in a treehouse is absolutely priceless. This is a Kruger National Park tour from Johannesburg, where you’re picked up from the airport and taken straight to the park.

Tours Outside of Kruger National Park

After experiencing a Kruger safari in 3 days, you may be ready for a new adventure close by. Just outside of the Kruger National Park, in the province of Mpumalanga, lies a myriad of activities that have been conveniently wrapped up in this package for you. The Panorama day trip takes 7 hours out of your day to show you around the world’s third-largest canyon, the Blyde Canyon.

This trip starts from Hazyview, which is 18 minutes away from the Phabeni Gate of the Kruger National Park. While you journey to the south of the park, beyond it is the Great Escarpment. It takes you around three beautiful lookout points: Three Rondavels, God’s Window, and Wonder View.

Thereafter, you’ll be delighted to find the Lisbon and Berlin waterfalls after stopping off for lunch at one of the Graskop stops (note that food is not included in the package).

This tour only costs you about $100 for the day and is suitable for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors or an old mining town that has been preserved since the gold rush days in the 1800s.

Return to camp in the evenings and savour a delicious meal. Swap stories of the day’s encounters around a cosy fire and listen to the sounds of the African night - the call of a Leopard or the roar of a Lion in the distance.

 • Classic lodge accommodation in Kruger National Park
 • Game drives in an open 4 x 4 safari vehicle
 • Services of qualified and experienced English speaking guides

Day 1: Nelspruit - Kruger National Park

3 day south africa safari

Upon landing at Kruger Mpumalanga Airport, you will be met by your driver for the trip to Kruger National Park. As you enter this prime game viewing area, your safari begins and you will already start seeing wildlife, such as a stately Kudu or fat-bellied Warthogs. Keep your camera and binoculars at the ready - a pride of Lion may be around the next corner.

Check into your lodge where you are spending the next two nights in classic thatched suite accommodation. You will have time to settle in and orientate yourself with your surroundings before your first 3-4 hour afternoon-evening safari. Join your guide experiencing the late afternoon magic of the bush, spotting endangered White Rhino, tall Giraffe feeding in thorn thickets and herds of Buffalo coming down to drink at waterholes.

Upon your return there is time to freshen up for pre-dinner drinks. Relax around the fire and swap stories about life in the bush before dinner.

Afterwards, gather around the dancing flames of the fire and be entertained by your guide's stories of bush life. Fall asleep in your comfortable chalet to the muted sounds of the night. (Dinner included)

Day 2: Kruger National Park

3 day south africa safari

The chacma baboons of the kruger national park.

[Title]

Chacma baboons are numerous in the Kruger National Park and live in huge troops numbering up to 200 animals (typically between 30-40). Troops consist of a family group of males, females and their young. Young baboons depend on their mothers for transportation, initially the little “pink foots” cling to the underside of the mother. At around 3 months of age they start riding “jockey style” on mommy’s back (leaning against the tail for support) as seen in this footage...

The African Giraffe

[Title]

There are approximately 10000 Giraffes in the Kruger National Park. They are gregarious and live in nonterritorial loose groups of up to 20 at a time, a behaviour that apparently allows for increased vigilance against predators. They have excellent eyesight, and when one giraffe notices approaching danger it will keep staring until the others look in that direction too. Giraffes live up to 26 years in the wild and slightly longer in captivity.

What to Pack for Your 3 Day Safari From Cape Town to Kruger

For your 3 day safari adventure, packing efficiently is key. Here are some essentials to bring along:

Comfortable Clothing

During the day, the weather will likely be warm, so pack breathable clothing like shorts, t- shirts, and tank tops. But the nights can get chilly, especially when staying in open-air lodges, so also bring a jacket, sweatshirt, and comfortable pants. Don’t forget a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes—you’ll be on the go and exploring the bush!

Camera Equipment

You’ll have amazing opportunities to capture wildlife in their natural habitat. Bring a high- quality camera, ideally with a zoom lens for close-ups. A spare battery and memory cards are a good idea too. A small tripod or monopod can help stabilize your camera for the best shots.

Binoculars are essential for game viewing, especially if you want to observe animals from a distance without disturbing them. Look for a pair that has at least 10x magnification and 50mm objective lenses for the best view.

Toiletries & Other Essentials

Don’t forget basic toiletries, hand sanitiser, tissues, a flashlight, insect repellant, a basic first aid kit, and any important medications. The lodges will provide bedding, towels, and mosquito nets.

What to Expect on a 3 Day Kruger Safari From Cape Town

Early starts and long game drives.

On a 3-day safari, you’ll be up with the sun for morning game drives in open-air vehicles. These drives typically last 3 to 4 hours, covering large sections of the park to spot wildlife in their natural habitat. You’ll stop for breakfast in the bush, watching animals emerge from the treeline as the day warms up. The thrill of spotting the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo—keeps you wide awake, even without coffee!

Tembo Guest Lodge

You’ll stay at Tembo Guest Lodge which is 10 minutes from the park, with amenities focused more on the wildlife experience than luxury. Fall asleep to the sounds of the bush at night, wake up to birdsong at sunrise.

We are a couple in our 60's who would like to do a 7 day safari split 3 nts in Sabi Sands and 3 in either Timbivarti or Manyeleti. Probably starting in Johan and ending in Neilspruit. We have read a number of posts and have done a safari in Tanz/kenya. We don't want to self drive even if it's easy to do so. We want to visit 2 different lodges for 3nts in each. Our budget is mid range about 85000 rand in total. We would want a pool with a water hole on site and would like to do at least 1 bush walk during the week. In tanz/kenya we did a private tour visiting multiple lodges but always the same guide/driver on the safaries. Here is seems that the lodges provide their own safaris and the tour agents just build a package to get you there. Is this correct?? We have looked at Umlani, Tangala, honeyguide, umkumbe, langa langa, elephant plains etc. They seem to be in our price range if we book direct but then we have to find and add the transfer costs. We checked safaribookings.com and they have a number of 4 day packages to a specific lodge, but very few 7 day packages including 2 lodges.

Questions..

What 2 lodges/areas would complement each other and provide a good diversity in sightings? What are your favorite lodges in this price range?

What is the approx transfer costs from Johan to Timb? Timb to SS? SS to Nelspruit.

Any assistance/recommendations you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not all 2025 rates are released yet but I would definitely recommend Honeyguide and maybe Umkumbe or Elephant plains.

Transfer to Honeyguide to EP or Umkumbe to Nelspruit, these can be quite pricy , approximately R5000 pp. just an estimate on 2024 rates.

It is far in advance but the budget friendly lodges book out quickly so no harm in booking early.

Sandy - owner - Love Africa Travel

Thanks for your input. Those where the 2 lodges we were leaning towards. We were just wondering if we should be looking to a lodge in Timb. to complement SS as that is what people seem to suggest. The transfer fees also put things into perspective on why people choose to self drive. We are still leery on getting lost on some dirt road surrounded by lions LOL. Will probably contact some agents for transfers and packages latter this year. Thanks again for your input.

We would love to hear any other recommendations for 2 complementary lodges in our price rage.

My TO recommends Notten's as the best value in Sabi Sands. Good sized traversing area shared with Sabi Sabi in the southern section of Sabi Sands. Typically more leopards than you can shake a stick at....

Link to pretty good map of greater Kruger showing traversing areas.

https://blog.sunsafaris.com/2015/06/sun-safaris-kruger-area-map/

Thanks, Nottens was on our list but it's a bit more expensive than our budget allows. Umkumbe is in pretty close to nottens but a bit more affordable. PS Thanks for the link. The map of Kruger is excellent.

10 Best African Countries for Safari

Posted: December 19, 2023 | Last updated: December 19, 2023

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Recommended Tours:

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

3 day south africa safari

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

3 day south africa safari

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

3 day south africa safari

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

3 day south africa safari

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Fantastic experience with a great guide. Thank you!
The 4-day Garden Route Adventure tour with Benjamin as our operator is impressive and unforgettable. Benjamin is knowledgeable, professional, friendly and patient. He managed well to meet the additional requests by this group. In addition to the scheduled programs, this group did Knysna Elephant Park, Cango Wildlife Ranch visit, and Bloukrans Bungy. We stopped many times at scenery spots for picture taken. We have covered so much that every is happy with their requests. The whole tour started well with booking, communication, food and accommodation. Everything is excellent and I highly recommend this tour if you choose a short tour on Garden Route Adventure.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days so Muslims usually have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date.

Other countries follow independent sightings.

When the sighting has been verified, Eid is declared on television, radio stations and at mosques.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.
