Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. According to reports , interest in moving abroad spiked after the recent presidential debate. So what are the best places to live in the world? Ask the expats—they offer a unique perspective on living in foreign countries, making their feedback invaluable.

This year marks the 11th edition of the Expat Insider report by InterNations , which is one of the most comprehensive studies on expat life, gathering responses from over 12,500 expats representing 175 nationalities in 174 countries or territories.

The report ranks the best countries to live by analyzing factors such as Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Personal Finance and the Expat Essentials Index (which covers housing, administration, language and digital life).

This year, Panama has climbed to the top—an impressive leap from its third place ranking last year—knocking Mexico to the second spot. Compare these results to 2023 and 2022 , when Mexico ranked number one.

Expats have named Panama the best place to live in 2024. According to the Expat Insider report, a remarkable 82% of expats in Panama report being happy with their life there, well above the global average of 68%.

So what makes Panama so appealing? “Panama saw a big improvement in the Working Abroad Index, from 30th place in 2023 to 12th place in 2024,” Malte Zeeck, founder of InterNations, told me in an interview. “Another index where Panama gained significantly is Quality of Life, with improvements in the following subcategories: Travel & Transit (notably for affordability of public transportation), Leisure Options and Healthcare (notably for affordability, availability and quality of medical care).”

Financial satisfaction is a standout factor in Panama, with 74% of expats content with their financial situation, compared to the global average of 54%. The country ranks first for this aspect and fourth overall in the Personal Finance Index. Additionally, 88% of respondents feel their disposable income is sufficient for a comfortable life, and 62% praise the affordability of housing—well above the global average of 34%.

Panama also excels in the Expat Essentials Index, particularly in ease of finding a place to live and obtaining visas. With a significant portion of its expat community already retired, Panama also ranks well for work-life balance and general working hours, making it an attractive destination for both retirees and working expats.

Mexico: Another Expat Favorite

Mexico continues to be a top choice for expats, securing the second position in 2024. Nearly nine in ten expats (89%) express happiness with their life in Mexico, which is significantly higher than the global average.

“Mexico is a beautiful and very varied country, with nice, warm people. I like the history and culture, it’s a balance of traditions and modernism,” one French expat said in the Expat Insider report.

The friendliness of the Mexican people and the ease of settling in are key factors that make Mexico attractive. An impressive 86% of expats rate the general friendliness of the population positively, and 85% feel welcome.

So why did Mexico dip after two years on the top? “The biggest drop—although far from dramatic—can be seen in the Personal Finance Index, where Mexico went from a second place in 2023 to a seventh place in 2024,” says Zeeck.

Safety also remains a concern, with only 66% of expats feeling safe compared to the global average of 80%. This, combined with average ratings for healthcare and transportation, places Mexico at 25th for Quality of Life.

“To sum up: It’s not that expat life in Mexico is a lot worse now than it was last year; it’s just that Panama made some bigger jumps ahead in the ranking and also saw small improvements across more single factors than Mexico,” says Zeeck.

Rising Stars

A few countries making notable leaps include Indonesia, South Korea and Belgium. This year, Indonesia went from 13th to to third place. Expats appreciate the low cost of living, friendly locals and excellent work-life balance, with 84% expressing overall happiness.

Expats in Indonesia also benefit from shorter working hours and a positive work-life balance, contributing to the country’s high ranking in the Working Abroad Index. The affordability of housing and overall financial satisfaction are other strong points, with many expats finding their income sufficient for a comfortable life. “It definitely takes less money to live comfortably here,” says a U.S. expat.

South Korea managed an impressive recovery from its place in the bottom 10 in 2023, coming in 50th out of 53 countries. This year, South Korea shot up the list to rank 23rd in 2024.

The biggest gains are related to Personal Finance: South Korea went from a below- average 37th rank to place 15th in 2024. “Not only do expats feel that their disposable household income is enough for a comfortable life, they’re also less likely to complain about the cost of living,” says Zeeck.

Gains in the Quality of Life (17th to 10th) and Working Abroad (46th to 37th) Indices are not as striking, but also contribute to South Korea’s much improved ranking.

Jumping up 20 places in the ranking, Belgium (now 18th) is another big winner in 2024. “In contrast to South Korea, Belgium’s results in the Personal Finance Index hardly changed (25th to 23rd),” says Zeeck. “But it leapt onto the podium for the 2024 Working Abroad Index (21st to 3rd).”

Expats also have a more favorable view on their work-life balance (71% satisfied vs. 65% in 2023) and their personal career opportunities.

The Happiest Country: Not A Happy Outcome

It is shocking to see Finland—which is always named the happiest country on earth —drop so dramatically. “Finland was indeed the ‘biggest loser’ in this year’s Expat Insider ranking. However, it has to be said that the country’s 16th place in 2023 was more of an exception; in 2022 and 2021, Finland had ranked in place 32 and 39, respectively,” says Zeeck.

Finland’s rankings falter in the Ease of Settling In (50th), Working Abroad (46th) and Personal Finances (52nd) Indices. Learning the language is also tough, and the weather has its challenges: The worst-performing factor in the index is climate and weather, with only 31% of expats rating it favorably, versus 58% globally.

“It’s possible that the topics covered under Working Abroad and Personal Finance, which play such a big role in Finland’s drop, have a bigger influence on the happiness of the majority of expats than on the happiness of the local population,” says Zeeck. “Expats tend to compare their country of residence with their home country, or other countries they’ve lived in before, especially when it comes to career prospects and salaries.”

“All in all, we look at areas of life that are either not necessarily relevant to locals (such as the Ease of Settling In Index, or the Language Subcategory in the Expat Essentials Index), or may pose fewer problems to locals (such as housing),” says Zeeck. “So I believe that the contrast between Finland having the happiest people wordwide and Finland’s bad performance in our ranking is partly because we look at the expat perspective on life in Finland in isolation.”

The United States didn't rank as well in the expat report.

The State Of Affairs In The United States

The United States has seen a considerable drop in its ranking, falling to 35th place in 2024 after being 30th in 2023 and 14th in 2022. “We haven’t observed a significant drop in any of the indices in particular, just a small decrease in average ratings for most factors,” says Zeeck.

Expats rank the U.S. 46th out of 53 countries when it comes to Quality of Life, citing expensive healthcare (53rd) and safety concerns (48th) as major issues. Only 19% rate the affordability of healthcare as good, compared to 58% globally. The U.S. also ranks low for political stability and the affordability and availability of public transportation.

In terms of settling in, the U.S. has fallen from 19th place in 2022 to 28th in 2024, with expats finding it difficult to make local friends and navigate social life. “Only 47% of expats are happy with their social life, and a mere 38% find making local friends easy,” says Zeeck.

Kuwait: Struggles Continue

Kuwait remains at the bottom of the list for the seventh year in a row. Expats in Kuwait report low satisfaction in areas such as Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In and Personal Finances.

“In summer, the heat can go above 50°C [122 degrees fahrenheit],” says an Austrian expat, highlighting the extreme weather conditions as a significant drawback.

Expats in Kuwait also face challenges with public transportation and building a supportive social network. Only a small percentage of expats find the local population friendly toward foreign residents.

Ohio Senator JD Vance is Donald Trump's pick for vice president

MILWAUKEE – Donald Trump selected J.D. Vance on Monday to be his 2024 vice-presidential running mate, a pick that seeks to capitalize on the 39-year-old Ohio senator's youth and celebrity status among conservatives and who skyrocketed to fame as the author of “Hillbilly Elegy.” 

Trump’s decision ends months of speculation over who would join the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s ticket as he seeks his political comeback in a November rematch with President Joe Biden.  

"After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio," Trump shared in a post on Truth Social on Monday.

Vance “will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” Trump added.

Trump revealed his pick on the opening day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he and Vance are expected to formally accept their party's nominations. The crowd on the convention floor broke into chants of "JD!" "JD!" moments after Trump confirmed his running mate pick.

Still, the announcement came just days after an attempted assassination on the former president during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Within hours of the shooting, Vance pinned the blame on President Joe Biden’s campaign — comments that drew criticism for being too incendiary.

"Today is not just some isolated incident," Vance posted on X . "The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination."

Vance was first elected to the Senate in 2022 with no prior political experience but plenty of name recognition from his 2016 memoir, “ Hillbilly Elegy .” The book , later turned into a Netflix feature film , detailed Vance’s journey from a childhood riddled by drug addiction and abuse to a Yale Law School degree that opened doors for him in Silicon Valley.  

Many pundits used “Hillbilly Elegy” to rationalize Trump’s popularity with white, rural America in 2016 – acclaim that put Vance on the national media circuit. 

As Vance entered the convention hall in Milwaukee, Jon Gruber, 60, of Altoona, Iowa said Vance's Appalachian background is a boon for the ticket.

"He's a common man that was elevated into the Washington spotlight and he hasn't been there long enough to become part of the Washington swamp yet," Gruber said. "Having him on the ticket with Trump essentially it's almost two outsiders going in to fix it."

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts was speaking with reporters at a nearby venue when the news about Trump selecting Vance came out. A grin broke across his face: He is close with the senator.

“He understands the moment we’re in in this country, which is that we have a limited amount of time to implement great policy on behalf of forgotten Americans, someone JD Vance personifies,” Roberts said. “At Heritage, we could not be happier.” 

The Biden campaign responded to the Vance pick by calling him an "enabler" of Trump's MAGA policies.

Biden told reporters Monday afternoon before boarding Air Force On that Vance is “a clone of Trump on the issues. So I don’t see any difference in them.”

The vice-presidential nod is the culmination of Vance’s rapid ascent within the Trump world. The Ohio native was once a fierce critic of the former president, at times comparing him to an opioid and saying he could be “ America’s Hitler .” But Vance changed his tune ahead of the 2022 Senate race, deleted controversial tweets and secured Trump’s support in Ohio’s nasty GOP primary. 

Now, Vance is one of Trump’s most loyal soldiers and makes frequent media appearances to tear down President Joe Biden and his allies. He attended the first debate between Trump and Biden, giddily seizing on the president's poor showing and touting Trump's performance. Vance is also close with one of Trump’s sons , Donald Trump Jr.

As Vance skyrocketed to the top of Trump's shortlist, he appeared on Fox and Friends with his wife, Usha, for an audition of sorts. He also previewed what he can do on the fundraising circuit: The senator organized a fundraiser for Trump in Silicon Valley – capitalizing on ties from his tech investor days – and helped the former president raise money in Cincinnati and Cleveland.

At 39 going on 40 – his milestone birthday is Aug. 2 – Vance would be the youngest vice president since Richard Nixon served under Dwight D. Eisenhower. He does not bring new demographics to the ticket that could help Republicans make inroads with Black, Latino or female voters. Ohio is not considered a battleground state after Trump won it comfortably in 2016 and 2020. 

New York delegate Robert Morgan, 30, of Manhattan said he's not worried about Vance's age or short career in Washington.

"He's got just as much experience as Barack Obama had when he became president, right? So I think he can handle the job," he said.

In many ways, however, Vance is seen as the future of MAGA . He embraced the Trump-style populism that rails against the Washington establishment. He’s staunchly isolationist, often using the Iraq War to justify his opposition to additional U.S. aid for Ukraine in its war against Russia.  

Vance is also a skilled speaker, an asset that could aid him on the debate stage with Vice President Kamala Harris.  

Harris left a voicemail Monday welcoming Vance to the campaign and expressing interest in debating. Details of a debate between Harris and Vance have not yet been agreed upon.

The Biden campaign  accepted an invitation from CBS News  for a vice presidential debate either July 23 or Aug. 13. The Trump campaign accepted an invitation for a vice presidential debate hosted by  Fox News , on a "Date to be determined,"

Some of Vance’s work in the Senate has been bipartisan, including bills that would strengthen rail safety and hold executives accountable for failed banks. At the same time, he also pushes back against Democratic priorities and engages with hot-button issues. Case in point: He voted against a plan that would protect access to contraception and introduced legislation to ban gender-affirming care for minors.

What we know about the Trump assassination attempt and the shooter

Former President Donald Trump was shot during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. He was immediately shielded and taken to safety after his ear was injured. Details are emerging about how it happened and the identity of the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks , 20.

President Joe Biden delivered an address from the Oval Office on Sunday night and said he was grateful Trump was not seriously hurt.

Here’s what we know.

Where did it happen?

The shooting took place at a presidential campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania , a city in the western part of the state about an hour's drive north of Pittsburgh.

What happened?

About six minutes into Trump’s speech, the former president could be seen clutching his ear after popping noises rang out over the rally. Trump ducked to the ground as several Secret Service agents rushed to the stage and surrounded him on all sides. There were screams from onlookers as the scene unfolded.

Roughly a minute later, agents helped Trump get up from the ground and stand. He held up his fist to the crowd, prompting cheers from supporters. Several agents then rushed him off the stage and escorted him into a vehicle.

Blood could be seen on Trump’s ear and on the side of his face. He later said on his social media site, Truth Social, that a bullet “pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

According to preliminary reports, which could change as the crime scene is processed, eight shots were fired by the shooter, an official said.

Trump was talking about Biden’s policies on immigration when shots were fired.

Was anyone else hurt? 

One spectator died and two others were critically wounded, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said.

The man who died was 50-year-old former firefighter Corey Comperatore, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Sunday. He said that Comperatore, whom he called a hero, moved to protect his wife and two daughters when gunshots were heard at the rally.

The two people who were wounded were David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania. Both are being treated at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and are listed as being in stable condition.

Witnesses described hearing loud popping noises, with one person saying they saw someone who was shot in the back of the head and another person who said she saw someone “bleeding profusely.”

Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, said in a statement that his nephew was injured in the shooting. Jackson said that his family was seated near Trump and that after they heard shots, his nephew realized something had grazed and cut his neck.

He said his nephew’s injury was not serious and “he is doing well.”

Was it an assassination attempt? Which agencies are investigating?

Law enforcement officials are investigating the incident as an assassination attempt.

“This evening, we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt against our former president, Donald Trump,” said Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office.

The FBI is investigating it as an act of domestic terrorism. The agency is leading efforts and working alongside the Secret Service and state and local law enforcement. In the aftermath of the shooting, the FBI deployed investigative agents, bomb technicians and evidence response personnel.

Rojek asked that witnesses to the shooting contact the FBI.

Who is the shooter? What was the motive?

The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He was killed at the scene.

“We do not currently have an identified motive, although our investigators are working tirelessly to attempt to identify what that motive was,” Rojek said.

A senior law enforcement official directly briefed on the matter said the nature of the shooting suggests political ideology as motive but that there was nothing definitive known at the time. The FBI conducted a preliminary analysis of Crooks’ phone but has not found anything to indicate motive, according to a senior U.S. law enforcement official.

Crooks used a semiautomatic rifle, based on what was found at the scene, three senior U.S. law enforcement officials said. FBI officials said that the weapon he used is believed to have been bought by his father, though they don’t have any additional information right now on how he got it. More than a dozen guns were also found in a search of the Crooks family home, according to four senior officials. The family is cooperating with investigators, an official said.

Law enforcement officials found a number of suspicious canisters or containers in Crooks’ vehicle, which was left near the rally, but it was unclear if they were functional as incendiary or explosive devices, two officials said.

The shooter was part of an area gun club, the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club. At its range in Clairton, the club has facilities for skeet shooting, high-power rifle exercises and archery practice.

Voter records from Pennsylvania listed a person with the same name, address and birth date as a registered Republican.

He did not have any affiliation with the U.S. military, according to the Defense Department.

It was not known whether the shooter was acting alone or in coordination with others. There does not appear to be any evidence currently that the shooting had any link to a foreign actor, according to a U.S. official.

Where was the shooter? Did the shooter get past security?

Crooks fired several shots from a nearby rooftop during the rally. The rooftop was outside the security perimeter established by the Secret Service, three senior law enforcement officials told NBC News.

Rallygoers alerted local police of a suspicious person near the magnetometer area, two senior officials said. They tried to search for the suspicious person, believed to be Crooks, but could not find him in the crowd, the officials said.

Two municipal officers also tried to approach Crooks shortly before he opened fire, according to two senior officials. It is unclear where that took place.

Crooks’ father called the police after the shooting to say he was worried that his son and his AR rifle were missing, according to three senior officials.

What have we heard from Trump?

Trump first posted about the incident on Truth Social.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” he wrote.

He expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement for their quick response. He added, “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”

“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,” he wrote.

What have we heard from Trump’s family?

Melania Trump released a statement Sunday describing the fear she felt seeing the incident unfold and thanking the Secret Service agents and law enforcement who responded. She also offered sympathy for the victims.

“A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald’s passion — his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration,” she wrote in the statement. “The core facets of my husband’s life — his human side — were buried below the political machine.”

She encouraged people to look beyond partisan politics: “Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love.”

Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, condemned the attack in a statement on X , thanking people for their prayers. “I am grateful to the Secret Service and all the other law enforcement officers for their quick and decisive actions today,” she wrote. “I continue to pray for our country.”

“I love you Dad, today and always,” she added.

Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., said in a statement through his spokesperson that he spoke to his father over the phone Saturday and that he is in “great spirits.” “He will never stop fighting to save America, no matter what the radical left throws at him,” Trump Jr. said.

Their brother Eric Trump posted on X a picture of his father pumping his fist in the air after the shooting. “This is the fighter America needs!” the post read.

Has Biden responded?

In his address from the Oval Office , Biden shared his condolences to those who were hurt and championed the values of democracy. "The higher the stakes, the more fervent the passions become," he said. "This places an added burden on each of us to ensure that no matter how strong, our convictions must never descend into violence."

The president also held a news conference earlier in the day, in which he said he'd spoken with Trump, who was "doing well and recovering." Biden added that he and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed by law enforcement, the national security adviser and Homeland Security.

Biden said he has directed the Secret Service to provide Trump with "every resource capability and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety." He has also asked the Secret Service to review security for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday, and ordered an independent review of national security at the rally.

The president urged unity and cautioned against assumptions about the suspect's motives.

Biden first addressed reporters about the shooting from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, about 90 minutes after it occurred.

“It’s sick. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons we have to unite this country,” he said. “We cannot condone this.”

The president's campaigning was put on hold for roughly 36 hours and began again Monday afternoon.
