Asian Tour releases bolstered 2024 season schedule

asian golf development tour

The Asian Tour’s remarkable period of accelerated growth will continue unabated in 2024 after it released another impressive and substantial schedule for the new season today.

Hot on the heels of the completion of its 2023 season last weekend, the Tour has unveiled an initial schedule of 20 strong events across 12 countries– with a significant number of important tournaments to be added.

Once finalised it is expected that the schedule will surpass this year– which saw 23 events staged with total prize money of US$35 million.

The Malaysian Open will celebrate its return to the schedule after a four-year hiatus by becoming the season-opening event and will be played from February 15-18.

It will be followed the week after by the International Series Oman – the first of 10 International Series events in 2024, which provide a pathway to the multi-million-dollar LIV Golf League.

International Series events will be played in Macau (International Series Macau presented by Wynn, March 14-17), Morocco (July 4-7), Indonesia (October 31–November 3), and Qatar (November 28 – December 1).

The Hong Kong Open will once again be part of The International Series while making its debut on the series will be the PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers, which was the Tour’s opening event in 2022 and 2023. Both events will be in Q4. The dates will be announced later along with the details of three more International Series tournaments.

The Tour will also once again return to two of its traditional tournament strongholds, Korea and Chinese-Taipei.

Three events will be played in each market, with the GS Caltex Maekyung Open (May 2-5), Kolon Korea Open (June 20-23) and Shinhan Donghae Open (September 5-8) staged in Korea; while the Yeangder TPC (September 26-29), Mercuries Taiwan Masters (October 3-6) and Taiwan Glass Taifong Open (November 14-17) will be hosted in Chinese-Taipei.

The New Zealand Open presented by Sky Sport (February 29–March 3), the Saudi Open presented by Public Investment Fund (April 17-20) and the SJM Macao Open (October 10-13) are also back on the schedule.

Said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour: “The strength and depth of the Asian Tour’s 2024 schedule is reflective of the phenomenal growth we have been enjoying and we are already excited about what the new year will bring.

“Importantly, we are delighted to confirm the schedule so soon after the completion of our 2023 season, which will allow our members to plan accordingly and act as enormous incentive to those heading to Qualifying School.

“The International Series events combined with our central column of established tournaments form the backbone of the Tour while we look forward to being able to announce other premier events in due course.”

The Final Stage of the Asian Tour’s Qualifying School (January 16-20) commences proceedings next year, providing a gateway into what will be another season of great advancement for the Asian Tour.

The Asian Development Tour schedule will be released early in 2024 and will feature an expanded line-up of tournaments, for what is the Asian Tour’s constantly evolving feeder circuit.

Golf Saudi Welcomes Asian Development Tour

asian golf development tour

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: History will be made next week when the Asian Development Tour (ADT) comes to Saudi Arabia for the first time.

To be held at the Golf Saudi-managed Riyadh Golf Club, the US$200,000 PIF Saudi Open will take place from December 8-10, featuring players from the ADT as well as professionals and amateurs in the Middle East and North Africa who are registered with a golf club.

The fact that the PIF Saudi Open is being played on the ADT for the first time is a sign of strengthening ties between the Asian Tour and Golf Saudi.

As part of a 10-year partnership that Golf Saudi has entered into with the Asian Tour, the US$5 million PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers has become the opening event on the Asian Tour’s annual calendar.

The PIF Saudi Open will also see the participation of a raft of up-and-coming players from the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab countries, in addition to members of Saudi Arabia’s National Team, who have gone from strength to strength in recent years, as part of Golf Saudi’s wider Mass Participation programme to grow golf in the Kingdom.

“All of us at both the Saudi Golf Federation and Golf Saudi are incredibly excited about next week’s seventh edition of the PIF Saudi Open. Each year we host the tournament, it gets bigger and better,” said Majed Al Sorour , Deputy Chairman and CEO of the Saudi Golf Federation and Golf Saudi, an Executive Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.

“I am especially proud how each edition provides Saudi and Arab golf players the opportunity to participate in a top tier competition in their home country and be able to not only develop their skill levels, but also to test themselves and go head-to-head against players from different countries in the Middle East, North Africa and now the Asian Development Tour in a competitive environment.”

Managed by Golf Saudi and playing to a par of 72, Riyadh Golf Club is 20 minutes from Riyadh. The course, opened in 2005, is known for its undulating terrain, wide fairways and manicured greens.

Al Sorour said: “By hosting tournaments such as the PIF Saudi Open, we hope to encourage and facilitate greater uptake in the game and offer our elite golfers the chance to compete against the very best.

“So, thanks must go to our strategic partners the Asian Tour for helping us to achieve that aim, as their involvement will mean the strongest player field in the PIF Saudi Open’s history.”

The tournament will witness the participation of the most prominent Saudi players, including the first and only Saudi professional player Othman Almulla , along with other National Team players: Abdulrahman Al-Mansour , Faisal Salhab and Saud Al Sharif .

A lot will be at stake for those players as the PIF Saudi Open also represents a qualification opportunity for the 2023 PIF Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers, which will be held in February.

The PIF Saudi Open is part of a series of events that Golf Saudi holds annually to raise awareness of the game in the Kingdom as well as developing home-grown talent.

By holding such events, Golf Saudi is looking to increase the number of golfers throughout the Kingdom within all age groups and demographics. By working with other sports federations and the Ministry of Sport, Golf Saudi – the commercial development arm of the Saudi Golf Federation – is looking to underline the wider benefit of sports participation more generally as part of Saudi Arabia’s progress towards its Vision 2030 goals to improve its citizens quality of life.

Meanwhile, the ADT has been a springboard to the Asian Tour for dozens of players, including reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Kim Joo-hyung of Korea and American John Catlin , a four-time winner on the Asian Tour.

Asian Development Tour to conclude 2022 season with USD200,000 Taifong Open

asian golf development tour

Making a welcome return to the schedule after a three-year hiatus, the Taifong Open in Chinese Taipei will act as the decisive, final event of the 2022 Asian Development Tour (ADT).

To be staged at Taifong Golf Club in Changhua county on December 22-25, the tournament will see a 25% increase in its prize fund to USD200,000, making it the joint richest event on the ADT. When the tournament was last staged on the ADT at the end of 2019, the purse was USD160,000.

The leading 10 players, not otherwise exempted, on the final 2022 ADT Order of Merit following the conclusion of the Taifong Open will earn their Asian Tour cards for the 2023 season.

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour, said: “Given that the Taifong Open will once more bring down the curtain on the ADT season, it’s a fabulous development that we’ll have a significant rise in prize money.

“With Asian Tour cards on the line and so much at stake, it’s fitting that the Taifong Open will offer the equal highest purse on the Tour, reflecting the importance of the week.”

In the 2019 event, Thailand's Donlaphatchai Niyomchon emerged triumphant in what was the sixth year in succession that the Taifong Open had been part of the ADT. Previous winners of the Taifong Open were local star Chan Shih-chang (2018 and 2014); Thai Pannakorn Uthaipas (2017); American Johannes Veerman (2016) and Thai Rattanon Wannasrichan (2015).

Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai currently tops the ADT Order of Merit with three victories this season, earning him a battlefield promotion to the Asian Tour for the remainder of this season.

The 2022 ADT season boasts a total of 15 events with three remaining: the Selangor Masters (November 23-26, Seri Selangor Golf Club, Malaysia), Saudi Open (December 8-10, Riyadh Golf Club, Saudi Arabia) and Taifong Open (December 22-25, Taifong Golf Club, Chinese Taipei).

AUGUSTA, Georgia : After largely managing to keep a lid on any lingering friction from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf drama during Masters week, bitterness and concern surfaced on Thursday following the ceremonial opening tee shots.

Although both sides have struck a conciliatory tone as officials work to hammer out an agreement to unify the sport, golfing greats Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson were less diplomatic after launching the year's first major.

South African Player, 88, three-times winner at Augusta National, declared that loyalty must be rewarded and American Watson, 74, twice Masters champion, lamented the fractured state of the sport.

American Nicklaus, 84, owner of a record six Green Jackets, said the only solution was to have the best back playing against each other.

The frank views came a day after LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, unwelcome at Augusta National, thumbed his nose at officials when he appeared at Wednesday's practice as a ticketed patron, the Washington Post reported, in a show of support for his 13 players in the Masters field.

Player was clear that if he was playing today he would not be in the forgive and forget camp.

"Anytime in any business whatsoever, not only in the golf business, there's confrontation, it's unhealthy," Player said. "You've got to get together and come to a solution. If you cannot, it's not good.

"It's a big problem because they paid all these guys to join the LIV Tour. Fortunes, I mean, beyond one's comprehension.

"Now these guys come back and play, I really believe the players who are loyal should be compensated in some way or another. Otherwise, there's going to be dissension."

A deal between Saudi-backed LIV Golf and the PGA Tour was expected to be announced before the Masters but has yet to materialise.

The negotiations are believed to include compensation for those who stood by the PGA Tour should LIV members be welcomed back to take part in tournaments from which they are currently banned.

Nicklaus, record 18-times major winner and once reported to be a target for LIV Golf, said only one goal mattered and that was getting the game's top players going toe-to-toe as they are this week.

"The best outcome is the best players play against each other all the time," said Nicklaus. "That's what I feel about it."

Watson believes the solution lies with the players, rather than officials.

"We all know golf is fractured with the LIV Tour and the PGA Tour doing the different things they are doing," Watson said.

"We all know it's a difficult situation for professional golf right now.

"We want to get together like we were at that Champions Dinner, happy, the best players playing against each other.

"The bottom line is that's what we want in professional golf and right now we don't have it."

Masters Par-3 Contest: Who stole the show in golf’s cutest event | Rogers Report

The stars were out on Wednesday at the Masters Par 3 Contest

Getty Images, Jordan Spieth

Hello, friends, and welcome to my Super Bowl, Christmas Day and Roman Empire all in one: Wednesday at the Masters .

To me, it’s the happiest day of the year. The players at Augusta National are able to take a few hours away from this week’s grind to spend some quality time with family and make lifelong memories at the Par 3 Contest . And lucky for golf fans, we get to see it all. On Wednesday at Augusta National, it doesn’t matter whose kid is grounded, which players are on which tour or what infant is crying. It’s an afternoon set up to go so well that there’s no chance for it to be anything but wholesome. And that’s exactly what it was.

My coworker and GOLF photographer extraordinaire Darren Riehl and I headed over to the Par 3 Course early Wednesday afternoon. It’s our second year watching the contest together and while there’s a case to be made for each day being the best to attend the Masters, I really am a massive fan of Wednesday (the day of the week and the Netflix show). You can walk the course in the morning and take in all the family time in the afternoon at the Par 3 Contest. The Par 3 Course is a much easier walk — it’s way less hilly and you can walk the whole thing in well under an hour. If you’re ever attending the Masters with young kids or someone who maybe can’t put in 20,000 steps a day, the Par 3 Contest is the best place to see your favorite players (and their loved ones!) up close.

There’s also a mini-merchandise shop on the far end of the Par 3 Course, which carries all the essentials: hats, sunblock, chairs and food. Everything you need for an afternoon at the Masters.

The winners

I’ll get to Strokes Gained: Wholesome in a minute, but I’ll give a shout out to the players who really brought it on Wednesday afternoon.

There were a handful of aces from the pros, which are impressive, but not as impressive as the putting performance that both Jessica Hadwin and Dakota Watson put on today.

Brad Faxon’s gig as Rory McIlroy’s putting coach could be in jeopardy if Dakota Watson keeps this up. I’ll reach out for comment on her hourly rate and get back to you all.

Jessica Hadwin also drained a clutch putt during the event, partially thanks to her husband for the read.

And finally, congratulations to Rickie Fowler on not only having one of the cutest kids at Augusta this week but also on the Par 3 Contest win.

The real winners

Okay, okay. Enough about good golf shots and low scores. Let’s get to what really matters at the Par 3 Contest: the caddies. I hung out by the Par 3 practice green for a while, where Frankie Fleetwood and Iris Lowry put on a show. Little Fleetwood seems to have a bit of Charlie Woods in him. He was walking in putts, fist pumping and throwing a finger up to the sky when he drained one. He was taking the practice seriously. Then Iris Lowry walked over and asked if she could have a turn with the putter. From there, the two hit alternating putts while their parents caught up off to the side. The patrons went wild when each kid holed one.

JT and Jordan this! Cantlay and Schauffele that! Let’s talk about the real best friendship in golf: Iris Lowry and Frankie Fleetwood pic.twitter.com/xlkFpBSxRJ — claire rogers (@kclairerogers) April 10, 2024

Frankie Fleetwood

By the power bestowed in me by the Rogers Report, I hereby declare Frankie Fleetwood as the Chief Good Vibes officer of the Par 3 Contest. This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one who has been paying attention to this event over the last few years. This was him in 2022.

Pace of play is important. Just ask Frankie Fleetwood. pic.twitter.com/epRujEkBul — GOLF.com (@GOLF_com) April 6, 2022

Little Frankie also has some serious game.

Not only do I love the friendship between Iris Lowry and Frankie Fleetwood, I love the friendship between their dads.

Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood

Next up we have the Schenk family. They’re enjoying their first time at the Masters this week, and I am a massive fan of Kourtney. If you’re looking for someone to root for in events, Adam is your guy.

To know the Masters Par 3 Contest is to know that Sammy Spieth stole the show last year, which he and Maya Fowler did again this year. Annie Spieth was pregnant at last year’s Masters, and this year, Sophie Spieth made her official debut at Augusta National.

One of the cool things about being the child of a professional golfer (I think, anyways. I’m not one of them) is that you can learn from the best. Sammy Spieth had his dad lining him up on the tee today and Fred Couples checking out his putting.

The Sammy Spieth and Maya Fowler content was some of my favorite of the day. The second generation of the Baker’s Bay spring break crew is shaping up well!

Crew Sims Koepka’s face was put on display for the fist time today at the Masters Par 3 Contest, and Jena Sims decided to have some fun with it.

And for the grand finale, I present to you all the best video of the week so far. If Tony Finau ever decided he didn’t want to continue playing golf, he could one hundred percent make it as a content creator. I’m obsessed with all of the Finau family content, but this video is extremely creative and they got an army of five kids to cooperate for it. That in itself is nothing short of a miracle.

Wednesday at the Masters kind of feels like a Sunday to me. It’s a nice fun day to relax before the work week really starts, and it’s always bittersweet when it ends.

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

Asian Tour remains an option for LIV stars in search of ranking points

Dustin Johnson has a lifetime exemption to the Masters after winning the tournament in 2020.

While an infusion of cash from Saudi Arabia and an established international series has raised the profile of the Asian Tour, it is not yet enough to convince the biggest stars from LIV Golf to use the circuit as a way to collect world ranking points.

A few lesser known LIV members have taken advantage of the opportunity, but Asian Tour CEO Cho Minn Thant said the infusion of big names has not yet happened.

"Admittedly you don't see the Dustin Johnsons of the world, not the Phil Mickelsons, not the Bryson Dechambeaus because they have qualified for the major events already," Cho said on Wednesday outside the Augusta National clubhouse.

"Playing 14 events on the LIV league and four majors doesn't leave much more room for them to travel and play golf.

"Mid-range LIV players are playing a lot on the Asian Tour and it has really elevated the strength of (the) field from our side and the interest in terms of media."

Players like Johnson, Mickelson and Bubba Watson, who have green jackets from the Masters in their closets and have lifetime exemptions to the event, are feeling no urgency to chase ranking points.

LIV Golf applied for recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking, which plays a key role in determining entry into the four majors, in July 2022 but was rejected last October and withdrew its application in March.

The recent decision could prompt renewed interest in the Asian Tour from the more prominent LIV members who earned exemptions into the blue-ribbon events due to past results but could one day be left out with no ranking points.

Fred Ridley, the Augusta National chairman, however, has said the Masters won't be afraid to use special invitations to ensure that top LIV golfers remain part of the tournament. In a further sign of the thaw between golf's wrangling powerbrokers, Ridley, who struck a conciliatory tone, even refused to completely rule out having direct access in the future for LIV players to qualify.

The Asian Tour has entered into a growth cycle over the last three years, expanding to 24 tournaments — including 10 international series elevated events — and moving into the Middle East and Africa.

The Asian Tour is also becoming less reliant on Saudi cash as sponsors get onboard, according to Cho.

"It is great to see the corporate world starting to support the tournaments rather than LIV or Saudi having to underwrite all of them," Cho said.

"Post-COVID we still have not seen Southeast Asia recover as fast as we would have liked and the Middle East is thriving right now, we have an event in Oman, one in Qatar, two events in Saudi.

"There is a lot of interest from entities in the Middle East wanting to do business in Asia who see golf as a good platform.

"There's a lot of golf out there and a lot of countries."

Got to play hurt

Masters 2024: Min Woo Lee has a broken finger, but there ain't no way he's withdrawing from Augusta

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/BW1_0716-2.jpg

AUGUSTA, Ga. — For just about every golfer, amateur or professional, an invitation to play in even one Masters Tournament is a dream come true. So when it actually happens, it is safe to assume any normal human is going to make every effort to make it to the first tee. Few, though, have ever taken that compulsion and that desire further than Min Woo Lee will do this week.

Working out in the gym last week, the 25-year-old Australian suffered an injury to the ring finger on his right hand.

“I dropped a dumbbell on my hand,” he said. “I was just doing like a side bridge glute thing, and it was literally my last rep, last set thing, and I threw the dumbbell down and somehow clipped my right ring finger. So I went to the doctor and I thought it was OK because I could move it. It was just red. I thought it would be fine. Then they came in and said, 'you've broken it.’”

Still, bad as that sounds, Lee, a former Scottish Open champion who qualified for his third Masters as one of the world’s top-50 ranked players at the end of 2023, was able to play nine holes Tuesday alongside compatriots Jason Day, Adam Scott and Cam Smith. All of which did at least lessen the “anxiety” Lee was feeling about his ability to play and compete over the coming days.

“This is the first time telling the public,” he said to Australian AP. “We didn't know as a team to tell or to not, and I felt like I should tell people because there was a lot of pressure on me playing well. But you can hear it from my voice: I'm not 100 percent yet. Other than that, I actually feel very all right. Could have been a lot worse. I'm pretty happy to be standing here, especially after playing nine holes and giving it 100 percent.”

Further incentivizing Lee, of course, is the fact that his older sister, Minjee, is already a major champion. Nothing motivates like a sibling rivalry. So Min Woo will definitely be teeing-up Thursday at 10:06 a.m. ( weather permitting ) alongside Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler.

“Honestly, it's actually amazing how fast the recovery was,” he further explained. “It was bruised, still swollen, but not actually that painful which is really strange. Somehow I'm recovering very good, so icing and elevating as much as I can. And yes, I still went to the gym last week as much as I could. Obviously didn't do that exercise. Every time I looked at that 20-pound dumbbell, yeah, gave it a death stare.”
