If you’re planning a Tesla road trip, this article will help you know:

  • The best Tesla trip planner app .
  • The most preferred Tesla trip planner app by most owners
  • Tesla Navigation vs A Better Route Planner (ABRP).
  • When to use ABRP vs. Tesla Navigation.
  • What not to expect from all the EV Trip planners?

Best Tesla route planner app

Most preferred tesla trip planner app by tesla owners, tesla navigation vs a better route planner (abrp), why should you use the in-car tesla navigation when driving, when do most tesla owners use abrp based on our surveys, when do most tesla owners use plugshare & other ev route planning, other available tesla trip planner options, what not to expect from all the ev trip planners.

From experience and other Tesla owners, the in-built Tesla trip planner (Go Anywhere) and A Better Route Planner (ABRP) are the best Tesla route planners overall.

Of course, there are many other good EV route planners but these two are among the best and highly recommended for planning Tesla road trips.

We did a survey to find out what app other Tesla owners preferred using when going on Tesla road trips.

Results from the survey showed that 99% recommended two route planner apps: (Tesla navigation and ABRP) and only 1% recommended Waze and Plugshare.

The table below shows a summary of the survey results;

The in-built Tesla trip planner has drastically improved over the years and that’s why it is still preferred by so many Tesla owners.

The following are the main differences between the two:

When to use ABRP and Tesla Navigation

I’d recommend you use both apps together. That is because ABRP is great for planning a road trip and the Tesla Navigation is best for actual navigation during the trip.

ABRP also works very well to ensure your trip is feasible.

We have a detailed article on How to use A Better Route Planner .

Best EV Route Planner.

  • It will route based on what’s happening in real-time

It is best to use the in-car Tesla Navigation when driving as opposed to ABRP mainly because it will route you based on what’s happening in real-time, like traffic, full chargers, etc.

This means it does more live determinations while you are in transit than ABRP.

For example, during our Tesla road trips, we have experienced times where the car reroutes us if the chargers are occupied . I.e. it finds nearby chargers and reroutes us. This ends up saving us time during road trips.

  • It allows the car to precondition before arriving at a Supercharger

This will help speed up the charging, thereby saving you time at the charging stop.

The vast majority of Tesla owners use ABRP on their phones to keep track of the overall road trip.

They use ABRP to get a clear picture of the trip. That is, to know if they can skip a supercharger, or have a rough idea of how many stops are in a route.

  • When they want to find or avoid specific chargers along their route.
  • When they want to read the charger station reviews (the comments people leave after using the chargers).
  • When they want to find places to sleep as they charge overnight.
  • To check roadblocks, accidents, constructions, traffic and speed camera locations, and other hazards.

How Accurate Is The Tesla Trip Planner After The Recent Update?

Apart from ABRP, Tesla’s in-built route planner, PlugShare, and Waze the following are other available trip planner options:

  • Google Maps (EV route planning)

Google Maps EV route planning is also great in helping you plan your Tesla road trip.

It helps you achieve the following:

  • It helps you find the best route.
  • When planning your trip, it calculates your next charging stops based on the battery range.
  • It gives you the estimated time it will take to charge your car. This is by putting into consideration the type of charger (fast or regular).
  • Drivers can be able to check charger availability in advance.

  • Apple Maps EV routing

Apple has come up with Apple Maps EV route planner that is almost similar to Google map’s EV route planner.

Best Tesla road trip planner app

So, basically, when taking a long road trip, your choice of trip planner app will mainly depend on your road trip goals.

  • Do not expect the trip planner to be 100% accurate

About 90% of the time when planning a trip, the charging times are always never the same as what you see on the EV trip planners.

Take, for instance, your Tesla trip planner predicted that you would arrive at a Supercharger with about 40% charge only to end up arriving with 10%.

This means that you will either have to charge for longer than you had planned on the trip planner or consume enough charge to take you to the next available/closest charge stop.

And this explains why you always see charging time differences when planning a trip on ABRP vs. the in-built Tesla route planner. This also applies to other EV trip planner apps.

Once you start driving, the car will constantly be evaluating whether it will manage to arrive at the next charging stop, or reroute you based on how much charge you have.

Additionally, it will change the original planned route if it realizes that it is consuming more energy than it originally ‘thought’ it would.

See the Longest Range Electric Car .

  • Don’t always expect to see a perfect 250kW or 150kW when charging

Most of the time, during a charging session, you will never see a perfect 250kW or 150kW. Sometimes, this may even end up changing your entire original plan on the trip planner.

Additionally, if you stop at a 150kW paired charger and someone pulls over right next to you, this means you will have a longer charging time than what the trip planner had originally predicted.

Even if you’re using the best Tesla trip planner to plan your road trip, it is important to always be flexible as anything can happen along the way.

A Guide to Planning a Tesla Road Trip

' src=

Prior to taking delivery of my Model S I was the guy who suffered from incessant thoughts of  range anxiety , which soon disappeared as I grew into my ownership experience. I charge daily to 90% in my 85 kWh Model S and drive about 100 miles a day commuting, running errands, etc. I return home with about 140 miles of range left every day which is enough to do it all again without charging. There have been a few longer round trips where I did about 180 miles round trip , and one intentional (but not required) visit to a Supercharger , but none of my trips have required charging en-route or at the destination. As the end of summer approaches I intend on taking two Tesla road trips – one to New Jersey, about an hour east of NYC, and another road trip taking me one hour northeast of Pittsburgh. The New Jersey trip will be taking place this week hence it’s the subject this post. The Tesla road trip to PA will be the subject for of a future post.

Tesla Road Trip Planning

Assuming I leave with a 90% state of charge, I’ll need to charge after depleting 160-190 rated miles just so I can maintain a comfortable buffer. Experienced Tesla road trip veterans are probably much better at estimating the amount of buffer needed based on time of year and weather conditions.

  • Top 5 Lessons from a First Tesla Road Trip
  • Tesla Road Trip Battery Range Planning
  • Reasons to Have a Tesla Tire Repair Kit and 2nd UMC

The next thing I researched are the number of Supercharger locations along my route. There are a many ways of doing this, so I’ll just mention two:

  • Google maps – Enter your start and end addresses and then type “Supercharger” and have Google find Superchargers on the map along your route. Pick a good one (or more if needed) as waypoints.
  • EVTripPlanner.com – This is a useful EV trip planning site put together by an enterprising 16 year old. Enter your start and destination addresses, select the type of car you’ll be using, and click the “Route through Superchargers” button. This will guide you to your destination through routes that have access to Tesla Superchargers. It’s not perfect and it can add more pit stops than needed so be sure to validate the results and adjust accordingly.

I used EVTripPlanner and found that while it wanted me to stop at both the Milford and Darien, Connecticut Superchargers, I technically would still have plenty of range and be able to skip Milford. From my home to the Darien Supercharger it’s 147 miles but EVTripPlanner estimates 161 rated miles needed. Considering we’re charged to 90% (240 miles), we’ll have plenty of buffer to fulfill the 1st leg at 147 miles.

How Much Charge Do I Need?

The rate of charge in an EV taper offs quickly as it approaches a 100% state of charge. This may add a significant amount of time to your charge. Also EVs charge faster from near empty than they do from half full. When you look at charge times and rates on Tesla’s site, those are generally based on ideal conditions assuming you’re using the latest Supercharger technology and you’re not splitting the charge with someone else that’s in the same Supercharger bank.

ALSO SEE: Top 5 Lessons Learned from a First Tesla Road Trip

In summary, I start with 240 rated miles on a 90% charge. I drive to the Darien Supercharger and use 161 rated miles. I have 79 miles of rated range left. Not enough to get me to my destination hence the reason for my stop. EVTripPlanner estimates 93 miles needed with no safety factor. Safety factors are generally added to standard (not rated) mileage. I need to add some safety factor so lets take the 2/3 approach. 93 x 3/2 = 140 miles of rated range needed to arrive at my destination. So I need to add 61 miles of rated range at the Supercharger to get to my destination and still have a good safety margin.

Tesla claims 170 miles of rated range added in 30 minutes, but as we’ve mentioned above they might be overly optimistic with this. Even so, planning for a 30 minute stop is very reasonable.

Destination Charging

I’ll definitely poke around when I get there to see if I can find a better charging station / wall outlet, but nevertheless I need to plan for the worst. If I charge the minimum at the Supercharger to get to 140 miles of rated range, drive and use the estimated 102 miles of rated range i’ll arrive at my destination with 38 miles of rated range left. On the way home I need to go back the same route and I need that 140 miles of rated range for the distance plus safety. Oops — I can’t get home.

So I need to add 102 miles of rated range while i’m there. More if I plan on doing things with my car while I’m there like showing it off with test drives, going to dinner, etc. Lets say I need 50 miles to use while I’m there, plus the 140 to get back to the Supercharger. I need to add 152 miles of rated range. At a charge rate of 3 miles/hour, it’ll take approximately 51 hours of charging to regain 153 miles of rated range.

  • Find a Supercharger near my destination – NJ only has one and its more than an hour away. No good.
  • Find a faster charger nearby – A local college has a J1772 reported at 30A/240V which would give 18miles rated/hour added. But I’d have to leave my car there or sit there for the charge. Better, but not great.
  • Charge more at my Supercharger stop on the way down and arrive with more left.

Charging up more at the Supercharger seems like it would be the best option. I’ll charge back up to 90% (240 rated miles), use 102 rated miles to get to my NJ destination and have 138 rated miles left. If I don’t go anywhere while there, that leaves me with plenty  of charge to get back along with a safety margin. If I want to drive around while I’m there, I figured an additional 50 miles of charge will suffice which equates to 16 hours of charging (from a wall outlet) or two overnights. That’s doable.

Planning Complete

The return trip home should be pretty uneventful assuming I did all of my Tesla road trip planning correctly. One last thing to consider is detours along the way. On our way down to NJ we pass by a favorite Sushi place we like to visit in CT. The restaurant is a bit off  route and will add a couple miles so I planned for this as well.

I also considered the unlikely scenario where the Darien, CT supercharger was offline when I arrived. What would I do? Fortunately there’s another one on the Northbound side of I-95 and then another only a few miles away on the Merritt parkway. Unlike MA and NJ, CT is pretty blessed with Superchargers!

This will be my first real EV road trip. Relative to the the epic 12,000 mile Tesla road trip  taken by the Recargo folks, and many others that are happening daily, mine will be tiny but just as fun. As a new owner that still occasionally struggles with  range anxiety , it has been an eye-opening experience having to think about options and and fall back plans – things I never once thought about in an ICE car. A Tesla road trip takes a little more planning. Thanks to the growing Supercharger network “filling up” my Tesla along the way is a minor inconvenience. Oh, and did I mention that using the Tesla Supercharger is free for life?

Tesla On-Board Trip Planner

Tesla On-Board Trip Planner

A Better Routeplanner (ABRP)

Now, this is the most talked about and the most preferred Tesla trip planning app on the internet, beating Tesla’s own trip planners hands down in just about every category.

It’s stand out feature is its accuracy – it will take all kinds of factors into account for when and where your next charge should be, including road conditions, driving style, traffic, and the like.

And it’s based on real time data, not just generic, standard data such as the distance between stops.

It also offers more charging stops, and if you were to take advantage of them all, this means faster charging at each stop, and a much lower likelihood of being left stranded somewhere without any power.

The other thing we love about the ABRP app is that it features a bird’s eye view satellite picture of the route ahead, rather than merely only a standard 2D app.

Many people find it much easier and natural to navigate this way.

When we tried it out for ourselves, we found that navigating wasn’t quite as straightforward as with the other apps in the shortlist, but we had a good overall first impression.

  • Most popular Tesla trip planning app on the net
  • Incredible accuracy taking more factors into account
  • Locates more charging stations than all the other apps
  • It features a satellite view of the route if you so wish
  • Some users recommend manually adding each charge stop
  • There are in-app purchases offered, which some users may find annoying

Also available to download on:

  • Google Play

PlugShare Trip Planner

PlugShare is one of the most accurate EV and Tesla charging station maps around, featuring over 500,000 charging stations across all the major networks, including Tesla Supercharger, throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

And not only does it offer route planning capabilities filtered especially for the model car you’re driving, but it also gives you access to the world’s biggest community of EV drivers. The benefits of this are many fold.

Users of the app can leave ratings, reviews, and photos for stations, and this can aid your decision-making about which charging stations to stop at, and which to avoid.

You can also use it to check whether an upcoming charging station is available, bookmark specific locations, and pay for your charging right in the app using Pay with PlugShare.

Additionally, you can get alerts for when a new charging station is installed nearby, and add new EV charge points to the map as you discover them.

When we tried it out, we received an alert to say that the next charging station on our road trip was occupied, and it recommended an alternative charging station and gave us directions to get there, which we then did.

So it’s definitely a thumbs up from us.

This app has received excellent customer ratings and reviews online, earning 4.8 stars out of 5 on the App Store and 4.2 stars out of 5 on Google Play at the time of writing.

It’s available for both Android and iOS devices.

  • Features over 500,000 charging stations
  • Users can leave ratings and reviews for stations
  • Check whether an upcoming charging station is available
  • Pay for your charging right in the app using Pay with PlugShare
  • Get alerts for when a new charging station is installed nearby
  • Some users have said that it could do with an update due to all the new charging stations installed more recently

Tesla On-Board Trip Planner

As you may already know, Tesla cars typically feature their own on-board trip planner, and using it has some very clear advantages…

Not only are you provided with the locations of recommended stops for charging up the EV, but it can also provide you with when it thinks you will need to recharge based on your driving and how much charge you have already used since the last charge.

And this is really valuable, because if at any point you get stuck in bad traffic, the amount of charge you use could come to more than you would otherwise expect.

But the other great thing about Tesla’s own trip planning is that you don’t have to wait until you’re in the car to use it…

Tesla also has a web based Go Anywhere tool that you can plan your trip on ahead of time.

It’s available on this link , and all you have to do is enter your location, your destination, and which model of car you drive, and it will automatically bring up the best possible route, and show you where charging points are along the route.

You’re probably wondering why we didn’t make Tesla’s own trip planner our number one pick.

Well the truth is, despite the Tesla brand being top of their game when it comes to producing EVs, the same cannot be said for their route planning, and it is well known that A Better Routeplanner (ABRP) is a much more accurate app that will take more variables into consideration.

Of course, we have tried this out for ourselves and were impressed with its simplicity and how it took charge usage into account when we got stuck in traffic.

  • You don’t need a smartphone or tablet
  • Get information on the go as you drive
  • Recharging takes your driving into account
  • You can also plan your trip ahead of time
  • Not as accurate as A Better Routeplanner (ABRP)
  • It excludes some superchargers on your route
  • It uses long stops, which means a slower charging rate

Google Maps EV Trip Planner

Google Maps EV Trip Planner

When planning a trip anywhere, what could be better than using the world’s most thorough and up-to-date map app, Google Maps.

Google Maps covers more roads and alleyways than any other map out there. And it’s not only available through a web browser, you can also download it as an app.

And surprisingly, it’s not only available on Google or Android devices, you can get it on Apple iOS systems as well.

Better yet, to get charging stations highlighted along your intended route, all you have to do is tap ‘Add charging stop’ once you have entered your destination into the app, and Google Maps will then pull up EV charging stations along your route.

All you have to do at this point is select which charging stations to stop at. It really couldn’t get much easier to use

Then the app has the added bonus of providing you with voice directions as you drive on your route, so you can concentrate on keeping both eyes on the road ahead.

When we tried it out for ourselves, we found it very easy to use, and that it had the most recent charging stations installed.

  • Available on both Android and iOS devices
  • World’s most comprehensive & thorough map
  • It’s very intuitive & easy to use & there are voice directions
  • Google Maps will pull up all the EV charging stations along your route
  • The app doesn’t automatically produce satellite images
  • The app doesn’t work out when you need to recharge

ElectricRoutes

ElectricRoutes

Here’s another great EV trip planning app worthy of a spot on our shortlist…

It has a very simple, easy to use user interface. It uses GPS to identify your current location, then you enter your destination, and a route will be produced on its maps, with the most appropriate charging stops highlighted for you.

But then it goes on to be even more useful. You can use it to bring up nearby amenities at any of the stops along the way, so you can hit a hotel, store, restaurant, toilet, and so on.

You can even select a preferred charging station based around what amenities you need.

And that’s not all – it can also check the availability of the next charging station, and if it is already taken, it will offer you a different option on or around the intended route. Handy, hey?

You can use your personal account to save route settings and favorite stations and addresses.

When we tried it out for ourselves, we found it very easy to use, and it came in really handy to be able to find the whereabouts of local amenities on our trip.

  • Simple, intuitive, easy to use user interface
  • It uses GPS to identify your current location
  • You can use it to bring up nearby amenities
  • It can also check the availability of the next charging station
  • You can save settings and favorite stations and addresses
  • It’s available for both Android and iOS devices
  • There aren’t many customer reviews around for this app just yet
  • Apple’s App Store

Best Tesla Trip Planner Apps Buying Guide

As promised, here’s your buying guide. Let’s walk you through some of the key points to consider before you download.

Compatibility With Your Device

Granted, most of the best apps on the market are available for both of the main smart device operating systems, iOS for Apple devices and Google Play for Android devices.

However, they aren’t necessarily always available on both, so you need to pay due diligence and check whether the app you like is available  on your preferred operating system.

Range Of Maps Available

If you like to travel far and wide, you need to ensure that your trip planning has all the necessary maps installed.

Many trip planning apps cover the whole of the US, but there’s no reason why you should be limited to the US.

Regular Updates

Imagine how frustrated you’d feel if you went out of your way to get to a charge point, only to find out that there was one that would have been quicker and easier to get to.

The solution is to go with a trip planning app that has regular if not frequent updates, so that whenever a new charging point is installed somewhere, you will be able to take advantage of it.

Easy To Use

Although you want your app to be comprehensive in terms of the data it provides, you don’t want it to be overly complicated to use.

So to that end you should look for apps that are simple and straightforward to use.

One of the best ways to judge this is to take a look at some of the screenshots of the app in action. (Just click on the links provided.)

Then you can see for yourself how intuitive the app is, and whether you’d feel confident using it.

GPS Functionality

Your trip planning app should have GPS functionality. That way, the app can detect your current location and produce your desired route from exactly where you are.

This can come in really handy if you’ve had to make a detour for any reason.

Nearby Amenities

When traveling in unfamiliar territory, you’re going to need some guidance on where the local amenities are, especially if you’ve been on a particularly long drive.

And sometimes it’s not always convenient or even possible to ask a passer-by for directions. So an app that can do this for you, is really something worth looking out for.

Customer Ratings & Reviews

Some of the apps available in the shortlist have been around a while now, so they’ve attracted many customer ratings and reviews.

And these can be a good indicator of how well an app performs, it’s usefulness, and how easy it is to use.

Push Notifications

Push notifications from a trip planner can come in handy on a road trip. You could, for instance, receive a notification to let you know when you’re within a short distance from a charging point.

But on the flip side, too many unnecessary notifications could prove a distraction.

In-App Purchases / Adds

Trip planning apps have to make their money somehow. And for apps that are free to download, their money often comes through ads or in-app purchases, which some users find pesky.

Answers To Your Most Frequently Asked Questions

Does tesla have a trip planner.

We can confirm that Tesla does indeed have a built-in trip planner. We reviewed it earlier – scroll back up to check it out.

However, many users haven’t been a hundred percent happy with the Tesla trip planning, and it’s very common for Tesla drivers to use third party apps for their trip planning.

What Is The Best Tesla Trip Planner?

If you have decided that you don’t want to go with Tesla’s on-board trip planner, I can assure you that you’re not alone.

And while any of the alternatives in our shortlist would be great, the one that most Tesla drivers tend to go for is the ABRP app, also known as A Better Route Planner.

Can You Use A Better Route Planner In Tesla?

You’ll be pleased to hear that the ABRP app, also known as A Better Route Planner, can work alongside the car’s on-board interface for added convenience.

Is The Tesla Trip Planner Accurate?

The Tesla Trip Planner is pretty good, but unfortunately it’s not always 100% accurate.

For this reason, we recommend that if you plan to take a trip in unfamiliar territory, you download a better, more accurate app, such as our number one pick, A Better Route Planner, (ABRP).

How Do I Schedule A Tesla Trip?

The good news is that you no longer need to pull open a huge paper map to plan out your trips and get your calculator out to work out which trips are actually viable for an EV, with charging stations along the way.

Instead, all you have to do is open the EV trip planner app of your choice, fill in a few simple details, and you’re good to go.

Tesla's in-car trip planning tool is available on the web

Map that cross-country trek from the comfort of home..

To date, using Tesla's trip planning tool has meant sitting inside your electric car while you map a route that takes you past charging stations. That doesn't make much sense if you're gearing up for vacation, does it? There's now a better way: Tesla has launched a web version of its trip planner to use while you're still sitting at your desk. It's not as fleshed out as the in-car version, but it can tell you where you'll need to charge and how long you need to drive based on both the route and the particular Tesla you're driving. You could see fewer stops with a Model S P100D than you would with a Model X 75D , for instance.

Convenience is clearly the main goal for the web planner, but it's also helpful if you're a prospective buyer. You can tell whether or not it's practical to drive to your favorite destination without having to search the internet for charging maps and unofficial guides. Tesla is no doubt hoping that you'll pull the trigger on an EV if you discover that range isn't an issue.

How to plan a road trip while driving a tesla.

Avoid any unpleasant surprises by planning your road trip with a Tesla

EVs (electric vehicles) have changed the automobile landscape. While some new players and traditional car-makers are in the EV space, you can't deny Tesla's role in starting the trend. With several Tesla models' long-driving range and the company's ever-growing Supercharger network in North America, it's easier than ever for Tesla owners to plan an adventurous road trip.

While a Tesla delivers zero emissions, low costs, and better performance, mile range is one of the worrying factors before a long road trip. Although the number of EV stations has increased due to Tesla's Supercharge network and Electrify America initiatives, they aren't a match compared to gas stations, and it can be difficult to spot one in specific areas. That's why it's essential to plan in advance before you go on the road with your Tesla Model S, 3, X, or Y.

Why do you plan a road trip in advance for your Tesla?

Range anxiety is the biggest reason for advanced road trip planning with any EV. Factor in the availability of charging stations, charging time, and compatibility with your Tesla on your long route. After all, you don't want to get stuck somewhere where you don't have friends and family. You should also maintain an extra buffer as unforeseen road closures may force you to take a long route to reach the destination.

You can use Tesla's Go Anywhere tool, glance over the Supercharger network, check your tires, note terrains, track temperatures, and keep other accessories like the top car chargers ready for a smooth journey.

Understand your Tesla's range

Before discussing suggestions for planning a road trip with a Tesla, it's essential to understand how your EV's range is calculated and how it translates in real life. Your Tesla vehicle's claimed range is based on EPA standards. While it's relatively accurate, it misses out on factors like temperatures, driving speeds, road conditions, tire pressure, and more that may affect your Tesla's range.

Freezing temperatures affect your Tesla's range. It may reduce your EV's range by 20% to 30%. An active car heater further impacts the claimed range.

Plan your Tesla road trip online

Tesla's Go Anywhere is an excellent travel-planning tool to get started. The tool is available on Tesla's large screen and on the web. You can select your Tesla model, glance over the claimed range, enter a location and destination, choose stops, and check the route information (powered by Google Maps) with Superchargers.

Tesla goes a step ahead and shows a maximum charge rate with an estimated charging time at each Supercharger stop. You can plan your stopovers at shopping centers and nearby attractions based on available data.

If a Supercharge isn't available in a region, Go Anywhere lists slow charges on your destination route. Apart from Tesla's built-in tool, you can use third-party apps like A Better Routeplanner that offer more details like weather information, real-time navigation, the ability to manage multiple trips, and more.

Pick your charging stations wisely

Apart from using Go Anywhere and other third-party tools, pick your charging stations smartly. Instead of choosing a charging station in a deserted area, stop at a station with nearby attractions to make your journey memorable. You can easily squeeze in two or three activities.

You should also consider booking accommodations where an EV charging facility is available. Even a slow charger is fine, as you will be juicing up your Tesla overnight.

Check your Tires and consider aero wheels

Incorrect type pressure can affect your Tesla's mileage range by 3% to 4%. Find the Tire and Loading Information label on the center door pillar and maintain a recommended tire pressure. You should also closely inspect the tires for cuts, wear, and bulges. If you find something unusual with them, schedule a service appointment using your Tesla app.

If you have the budget, consider installing aero wheels to improve efficiency and range during long-distance travel.

Activate regenerative breaking

All Tesla models come with regenerative braking to convert kinetic energy into electricity. When you take your foot off the accelerator, regenerative braking creates on-the-go energy, allowing you to go the extra mile. Tesla recommends setting regenerative breaking to standard.

Don't forget charging accessories

You should also pack essential accessories like a Tesla charging cable, portable charging connector, and adapters for several charging networks. You can charge at different charging networks without worrying about compatibility issues.

Have a memorable road trip

Planning a long road trip with a Tesla doesn't require rocket science. Keep a realistic range, pin down Superchargers, and pick your stays strategically to avoid surprises. If you plan to pass through several dead zones with glitchy network connectivity, download Google Maps offline to avoid getting lost in the wrong direction.

From choosing your destination to packing the essential supplies, we’ll cover everything you need to know to ensure a successful and enjoyable adventure. So buckle up, charge your Tesla, and let’s hit the road!

Choose Your Destination

The first step in planning a road trip in a Tesla is deciding on your destination. Whether you have a specific place in mind or you’re open to exploring new destinations, consider factors such as distance, scenery, and attractions that align with your interests. Are you interested in picturesque landscapes, vibrant cities, or historic landmarks? Do you prefer coastal drives or mountainous terrains? These considerations will help you narrow down your options and create an itinerary that suits your preferences.

When choosing your destination, it’s also important to take into account the availability of EV charging stations. Tesla offers a widespread Supercharger network that allows for convenient charging along major highways and popular travel routes. Research the charging infrastructure and amenities available at your chosen destinations, as well as any local incentives or discounts for electric vehicle owners.

Once you’ve selected your destination, consider the ideal season for your road trip. Some areas may be more enjoyable during certain times of the year, while others may have specific events or festivals that you wouldn’t want to miss. Checking weather forecasts and local events calendars will help you plan your trip accordingly.

Lastly, don’t forget to factor in the duration of your trip. Consider how much time you have available and how far you’re willing to travel. If you have a limited timeframe, it may be more suitable to choose a destination that is closer to your starting point. On the other hand, if you have more time to spare, you can embark on a more extensive journey and explore multiple destinations along the way.

Plan Your Route

Once you have chosen your destination, the next step is to plan your route. Mapping out a detailed itinerary will help you stay organized and make the most of your road trip. Start by using a reliable navigation tool or GPS system to identify the best route to your destination. You can also make use of Tesla’s built-in navigation system, which considers charging points and provides real-time updates on available Supercharger stations.

Consider incorporating scenic drives and attractions along the way to enhance your road trip experience. Research points of interest, national parks, landmarks, and other hidden gems that you can explore during your journey. This will not only break up the drive but also allow you to immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of the places you pass through.

When planning your route, factor in the charging needs of your Tesla. Identify Supercharger stations along your route and estimate the charging time required at each location. Teslas charge quickly at Supercharger stations, allowing you to utilize your time efficiently during breaks. Plan for regular charging stops to ensure you have enough battery power to reach your destination comfortably.

In addition to Superchargers, consider incorporating destination charging locations such as hotels or tourist attractions where you can park and recharge your Tesla at a slower rate. The Tesla Destination Charging network provides access to a growing number of charging options at various destinations, allowing you to top up your battery while you explore nearby attractions.

Be sure to also have a backup plan in case any charging stations are out of service or unavailable. Keep a list of alternative charging options, such as public EV charging stations or other Tesla-compatible charging networks, that you can rely on if needed.

Charging Locations

One of the key aspects to consider when planning a road trip in a Tesla is the availability of charging locations along your route. Tesla owners have the advantage of a well-established Supercharger network, which provides fast and convenient charging at strategic locations. These Supercharger stations are typically located near major highways, making them easily accessible during your journey.

To ensure a smooth road trip, it is important to familiarize yourself with the map of Supercharger locations. Tesla’s official website and mobile app provide up-to-date information on the availability and status of Superchargers, allowing you to plan your stops accordingly. Make note of the distances between Supercharger stations to estimate when you need to recharge your Tesla.

In addition to Superchargers, Tesla also offers Destination Chargers at various hotels, restaurants, and other locations. These chargers are designed to provide overnight or extended charging options while you explore nearby areas. Include destination charging locations along your route, especially if you plan on staying at hotels or visiting attractions that offer Tesla charging amenities.

When using Superchargers or Destination Chargers, it’s important to be mindful of charging station etiquette. Avoid occupying charging spots once your Tesla is sufficiently charged, as it may limit access for other EV owners. Tesla’s navigation system can help you determine the ideal charging time for optimal efficiency.

Aside from Tesla charging options, it’s also worth familiarizing yourself with public EV charging stations along your route. There are numerous third-party charging networks that offer compatibility with Teslas, allowing you to access additional charging resources if needed. It is advisable to have a list of backup charging options to rely on in case a Supercharger or Destination Charger is unavailable or out of service.

When planning your road trip, prioritize charging stops to maintain a comfortable buffer of battery range. This will help you avoid unnecessary stress or range anxiety during your journey. By strategically mapping out your charging locations and considering alternative options, you can ensure a seamless and enjoyable road trip in your Tesla.

Aside from mechanical preparations, it’s essential to pack an emergency kit for your Tesla. This kit should include items such as a first aid kit, jumper cables, flashlight, tire repair kit, and a portable electric air pump. It’s better to be prepared for any unexpected situations on the road.

Another crucial consideration is downloading and familiarizing yourself with the Tesla mobile app. This app allows you to monitor your vehicle’s charging status, pre-condition the interior temperature, and even locate nearby charging stations. It also offers remote features such as locking and unlocking your Tesla, which can be helpful during your road trip.

Lastly, it’s a good idea to plan your entertainment options for the journey. Teslas come equipped with a variety of entertainment features, including a large touchscreen display, internet connectivity, and streaming services. Download your favorite music, podcasts, or audiobooks to enjoy during your drive.

By taking the time to prepare your Tesla and ensure it’s in prime condition, you can embark on your road trip with peace of mind, knowing that you are well-equipped for the adventure ahead.

Elon Musk talks Tesla Secret Plan Part 2, how it is going 8 years later

Avatar for Fred Lambert

Elon Musk is back referencing his ‘Tesla Secret Master Plan Part 2’. Let’s take a look at how the execution is going 8 years later.

As a sort of public business plan, Musk has been releasing ‘Tesla Secret Plan’ blog posts to describe the automaker’s product plans.

The first was released back in 2006 and to Tesla’s credit, the company accomplished pretty much everything in that plan.

In 2016, Musk released ‘ Tesla Secret Master Plan Part 2 ‘.

Musk republished it this weekend. It has been 8 years, how is it going?

Integrate Energy Generation and Storage

The first point/product in the plan was “a smoothly integrated and beautiful solar-roof-with-battery product”:

Create a smoothly integrated and beautiful solar-roof-with-battery product that just works, empowering the individual as their own utility, and then scale that throughout the world. One ordering experience, one installation, one service contact, one phone app.

This was at a time Musk was trying to sell the merger of Tesla with SolarCity.

Tesla did build the solar roof, but it hasn’t been the success it thought it would be—at least for now.

At one point, Tesla talked about producing 1,000 solar roofs per week. Tesla never released specific data about the solar roof rollout, but we obtained some data at some point showing that the company had installed only a small fraction of that.

Tesla’s overall solar deployment, which also includes rooftop solar, has been falling over the last year as Tesla focuses on supplying its energy ecosystem to third-party installers.

Expand to Cover the Major Forms of Terrestrial Transport

The second point is about having EV models in all segments of transportation:

Today, Tesla addresses two relatively small segments of premium sedans and SUVs. With the Model 3, a future compact SUV and a new kind of pickup truck, we plan to address most of the consumer market. A lower cost vehicle than the Model 3 is unlikely to be necessary, because of the third part of the plan described below.

“A future compact SUV”. Tesla launched the Model Y, which became the best-selling vehicle in the world last year – an incredible feat.

“A new kind of pickup truck”. Tesla launched the Cybertruck recently – to mixed reviews, but it is still early in the rollout and certainly too early to say if the program is going to be a success or failure.

As for a cheaper vehicle than Model 3 being “unlikely to be necessary,” that was plain wrong. Tesla badly needs cheaper vehicles, and recently, It has invested in its next-generation vehicle platform, which is expected to support a “$25,000 car.” Although, a recent report claimed that Tesla canceled the program , which Musk denied.

Along with these vehicles, the “Master Plan Part 2” mentioned two commercial electric vehicles:

In addition to consumer vehicles, there are two other types of electric vehicle needed: heavy-duty trucks and high passenger-density urban transport. Both are in the early stages of development at Tesla and should be ready for unveiling next year. We believe the Tesla Semi will deliver a substantial reduction in the cost of cargo transport, while increasing safety and making it really fun to operate.

Tesla Semis are on the road today, but the program has also had its issues. It was delayed several years and to this day, Tesla only deployed a few electric trucks to its own fleet and a single client, PepsiCo.

The program has not been a success yet, but Tesla is not giving up on it. The automaker is currently building an expansion at its Gigafactory in Nevada to build the electric in high volume.

As for the “high passenger-density urban transport”, Tesla has never publicly commented on it 8 years later, but a video allegedly of a Tesla prototype for a people-mover for The Boring Company did leak last year.

Develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning

The last two points, autonomy and sharing, are linked together and dependant on Tesla developing self-driving technology.

This has obviously yet to happen.

Musk has often made predictions about Tesla delivering self-driving and they were all wrong. In that blog post, Musk was way more careful about talking about a timeline:

As the technology matures, all Tesla vehicles will have the hardware necessary to be fully self-driving with fail-operational capability, meaning that any given system in the car could break and your car will still drive itself safely. It is important to emphasize that refinement and validation of the software will take much longer than putting in place the cameras, radar, sonar and computing hardware.

The hardware has changed a lot over the last 8 years, and the “refinement and validation” are still ongoing.

With the recent release of FSD v12, there has been hope that Tesla could finally deliver on its promise, but there’s still significant doubt.

As for the sharing part, it is completely dependent on Tesla achieving self-driving.

Electrek’s Take

Top comment by grant.

The Model Y has been a huge success. The Model 3 has been a big success. Everything else has been a major disappointment.

I credit Elon’s first master plan blog post for greatly influencing my interest in electric vehicles.

What Tesla has accomplished since is truly incredible.

As for the second part, the fact that the Model Y came out of it is amazing by itself.

However, there was a clear emphasis on autonomy in the plan and that hasn’t been going as well. To be fair, it’s an incredibly difficult problem to solve. But there’s an argument to be made about Tesla’s putting too many eggs in the same basket on that front.

Elon musk touts tesla master plan: $25,000 ‘model 2’ takes back seat to autonomy.

Tesla 'Model 2' taking a back seat?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a tweet on Saturday linked to the 2016 Master Plan, Part Deux saying “I wrote this 8 years ago.” It’s not clear what the implication of the tweet is but that plan puts a lot of emphasis on autonomous vehicles and puts little weight on low-cost vehicles (other than revisiting what was said in the original 2006 Master Plan ). Musk said on Friday that the Tesla “Robotaxi unveil” is on 8/8 . This is expected to be highly autonomous. ( The Master Plan, Part 3 focuses mostly on sustainable energy.)

Lower-cost vehicle below Model 3 necessary? In the 2016 post, Musk says: “A lower cost vehicle than the Model 3 is unlikely to be necessary, because of the third part of the plan described below.” In the “sharing” part of the plan Musk states that sharing “dramatically lowers the true cost of ownership to the point where almost anyone could own a Tesla.” At the end the post concludes: “So, in short, Master Plan, Part Deux is: Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments / develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning / enable your car to make money for you when you aren't using it.” The closing statement also mentions solar roofs. Nothing is said specifically about a low-cost vehicle in the conclusion.

Morgan Stanley rethink? In a research note on Friday , Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas appears to reassess the future of the low-cost vehicle, often referred to as the Model 2. While asserting that the Model 2 is critical to growth, he concedes that Chinese electric vehicle makers are already making cheap EVs and that the Model 2 may not be the game changer that it seemed to be before. Reuters claimed in an article on Friday that Tesla TSLA had scrapped its low-cost car plans in the face of Chinese competition. Musk responded by saying: “Reuters is lying (again) .”

The Model 3 is pretty cheap already / Model Y is high volume: the “affordable car” mentioned in the original 2006 Master Plan could in fact apply to a Model 3 or even a Model Y today — with all the discounts and incentives that come with those cars. The Model 3 is being promoted on Tesla’s website at starting prices of just over $35,000 for the purchase of new vehicles in inventory. And if you lease the least expensive rear-wheel drive (RWD) $35,000 Model 3, a $7,500 incentive applies across the term of the lease. Also keep in mind that Tesla is on a price cutting tear at the moment that, combined with $7,500 incentive, makes the Model Y also increasingly inexpensive in the U.S. The Model Y is also turning out to be Tesla’s highest volume car to date.

But wait...Musk and Tesla executives have talked about the low-cost vehicle recently: “We're very far along on our next-generation low-cost vehicle,” Musk said in the fourth quarter earnings call in January. “And this is really going to be profound, not just in the design of the vehicle itself, but in the design of the manufacturing system,” he said. The vehicle (or vehicles) will initially be made at the Gigafactory in Texas — where the Cybertruck is made — and later in Mexico and then other “locations around the world,” Musk said. Back in October, during the third quarter earnings conference call, Musk called the next-gen vehicle "more conventional" in order to “achieve a units-per-minute level that is unheard of in the auto industry.” He also described the vehicle as "utilitarian” which could be interpreted as meaning more basic than the typical Tesla to date. That said, a low-cost consumer vehicle could be taking a back seat to the Robotaxi in light of the August 8 announcement and Musk could be taking more of a wait-and-see stance.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Elon Musk may unveil Tesla's India investment plan this month

N ew Delhi [India], April 11 (ANI): Tesla chief Elon Musk may unveil India's investment plan this month. Confirming his upcoming visit to India, Musk had tweeted late on Wednesday that he was looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister @NarendraModi in India!" Musk wrote on X.

Musk's visit to India where he is likely to announce investment in the country, comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is bidding for his third term and may give a fillip to the government's image for attracting big-ticket investment. It may also boost BJP's polls prospects given the party in power at the Centre is aggressively campaigning with global corporates to invest in India.

Earlier this week in an X Spaces session, Elon Musk had said that India, like every other country, should have electric cars and it will be a natural progression for his company to provide Tesla electric vehicles in the country.

According to sources, Musk, during his India visit, might make the much-anticipated announcement of setting up Tesla 's first plant in the country. Musk will likely meet Prime Minister Modi on April 22 in the national capital, according to Reuters.

Apart from announcing Tesla 's maiden foray in India, Musk is also expected to disclose details of the automobile major's plans for the country.

However, the final agenda for Musk's trip to India is yet to be confirmed.

It was reported earlier that Tesla officials were exploring potential sites in India for a manufacturing plant, which is anticipated to necessitate an investment of approximately USD 2 billion.

Tesla 's interest in expanding its presence in the Indian market has intensified, with the company actively searching for a suitable location to establish a cutting-edge manufacturing facility.

According to sources, the state governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat have extended attractive land offers to Tesla for this purpose, signalling significant progress in India's electric mobility landscape.

As reported earlier, initially Tesla would manufacture entry-level cars in India, priced around Rs 25 lakh, with an annual capacity of 5 lakh units.

Tesla 's move seemed to have fast-tracked in the wake of India's new EV policy, where incentives are proposed for setting up manufacturing units in India.

The policy has asked for a minimum investment threshold of Rs 4150 crore (USD 500 million) and encouraging manufacturers to achieve significant levels of domestic value addition (DVA), the government mandates that by the third year of setting up the manufacturing unit, at least 25 per cent of the parts used to make the vehicles should be sourced domestically. This localization level is expected to increase to 50 per cent by the fifth year of operation.

Under the new EV policy, for vehicles valued at USD 35,000 or more, a 15 per cent customs duty will be imposed for five years if the manufacturer builds manufacturing facilities in India within three years.

The total number of EVs allowed for import under the policy will be limited based on the investment made, or of a maximum value of Rs 6484 crore, whichever is lower. If the investment exceeds USD 800 million, a maximum of 40,000 EVs can be imported, with no more than 8,000 per year. Unused import limits can be carried over.

Earlier in June last year, Elon Musk said he was planning to visit India in 2024, added that he was confident that the electric carmaker will be in India and will do so "as soon as humanly possible."

He had told reporters in New York, following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was then on a four-day State visit to the US.

Musk had said that PM Modi invited him to India.

"I would like to thank PM Modi for his support and hopefully, we will be able to announce something in the future," Musk had said.

In November 2023, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal visited Tesla 's manufacturing facility in California's Fremont.

Tesla had been interested in investing in India but "high import duty" structures were a bone of contention. Musk had reportedly requested India to lower taxes and allow the company to sell vehicles built elsewhere at a competitive price. Before the new EV policy, import duty on completely built unit (CBU) vehicles was 25 to 100 per cent. (ANI)
