FAQ About Travel Insurance to Poland

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Health insurance and care

The healthcare system in Poland is based on the principles of equal treatment and access to medical services. It is based on a number of general rules. These rules apply unless specific legislation or international agreements provide otherwise.

The National Health Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia, NFZ) is the main institution responsible for managing public funds for health care. It is the pillar of the entire health insurance system. National health policy is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health.

Foreign researchers and their families visiting and living in Poland have access to Polish state-funded health services:

  • as employees, if the employer pays the health insurance contributions,
  • as a doctoral student with health insurance provided by the university/institute,
  • with voluntary insurance in NFZ or with a private insurance company,
  • during temporary stays/visits on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card,
  • who have an S1 document issued by another EU country (e.g. posted workers, family members),
  • if they are insured as family members of employees in Poland.

Health insurance

Health insurance is compulsory in Poland. You must always provide proof of insurance when applying for a visa to Poland and when legalising your stay in Poland. If you are insured with the National Health Fund (NFZ), most state-funded health services are free of charge, with a few exceptions, such as some dental services.

Note : Health insurance is not the same as accident insurance (NNW). It covers the costs of medical treatment in Poland, which means you can go to the GP or hospital, do a diagnosis or get a discount when you buy medicine.

Insurance of employees

As a general rule, all persons working in Poland on the basis of an employment contract ( pl. umowa o pracę ) or a free-for-task contract   ( pl. umowa zlecenia ), regardless of their nationality, are subject to compulsory health insurance. This means that the monthly insurance contributions are paid by the employer at the rate of 9% of the salary base, deducted each month.

In the case of persons with a specific-task contract   ( pl umowa o dzieło ), the employer is not obliged to cover their insurance. Therefore, They must take out insurance individually, either with the NFZ or a private insurance company (see below for more information).

  • Insurance of doctoral students

In Poland, unless they are insured on another basis, for example as employees or family members, all doctoral candidates, regardless of nationality, are covered by the health insurance provided by their higher education institution. This means that doctoral students have free access to public health services. The right to use the services ends only 4 months after graduation or termination of training.

Insurance of family members

In Poland, an insured employee is obliged to register his or her family members for health insurance coverage under the employment contract. Family members are children, spouses, parents, and grandparents, provided that they live in the same household as the employee and do not have their own title of insurance. Their personal details must be provided to the employer to register family members. If you change your employer, you will have to notify the new employer of the members of your family. No additional or higher contributions will be charged for adding family members.

Voluntary insurance

If you are not covered by compulsory health insurance, you have to sign an individual insurance agreement with either the National Health Fund or a private insurance company/medical service provider.

It should be noted that the NFZ option is the most advantageous as it covers all state-funded medical services and any related hospital treatment. The monthly rate is PLN 662.88 until September 2023.  Students and doctoral students  from outside the EU pay a lower amount of PLN 55.80 monthly It may change every quarter as it is linked to the average salary in Poland. Contributions should be paid by the 15th of each month to a designated individual bank account.

However, only certain groups of foreigners can sign the voluntary NFZ agreement and these are among others:

  • European Union, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland nationals,
  • third-country nationals who have a visa for the purpose of work (D-6 visa), temporary residence permit, permanent residence permit, EU long-term residence permit,
  • students and doctoral candidates.

This means that foreigners who have a visa for the purpose of conducting scientific research (D-13) cannot sign the voluntary NFZ agreement so they have to buy insurance from a private insurance provider.

Note: When signing the contract, NFZ will check your previous insurance period in Poland and/or other EU countries. If there is a gap of at least 3 months between the previous insurance and the planned NFZ insurance, you will have to pay an initial fee, the amount of which depends on the length of the gap. This means that foreigners coming to Poland from third countries for the first time must pay the fee. Students, including doctoral students , are exempt from this fee.

Evidence of insurance , which can be useful in some circumstances (e.g. when visiting a doctor), is a copy of the signed agreement between you and the NFZ together with the proof of payment of the last month’s contribution.

  • Private insurance providers

There are many private insurance companies or medical centres that offer different personalised policies. You should be aware that private insurance does not provide the same general and equal access to medical services as the public NFZ.

The scope of private services and the resulting payments depend on the policy you buy and the contract you sign. The cheapest options cover only basic services, such as visits to general practitioners or certain specialists. More advanced services, such as more complicated dental treatment, childbirth, surgery or hospitalisation, require a more expensive policy.

Also note that private policies often have waiting periods, meaning that you cannot use certain services, usually the most expensive ones, until a certain period has elapsed, e.g. you cannot use rehabilitation or minor surgery until 60 or 120 days after you have paid your premiums.

Some employers in Poland offer their employees a private healthcare package in addition to the public insurance. Sometimes also individual citizens decide to buy private insurance in order to have quicker access to medical services.

Medical services

In Poland, a primary care doctor (general practitioner, or GP) is commonly called a "first contact doctor" or "family doctor". This is because you need a referral from your GP to access more specialised medical services, such as neurologists, eye specialists, hospital treatment or medical rehabilitation. A referral is not required for emergencies or for services provided by the following doctors: oncologist, gynaecologist, psychiatrist, venereologist and dentist, which means that you can register for the visit whenever you need to.

To see your family doctor, you must first register at one of the outpatient clinics, preferably near where you live. You will need to show your identity card or passport and proof of insurance (e.g.a document called RMUA from your employer or doctoral school). Once you are registered, you can book an appointment with a doctor or visit them immediately if they are not occupied.

The range of free dental services available to an insured person is limited. Children and young people up to the age of 18 and pregnant women are covered by better arrangements. You should also bear in mind that only basic dental materials are covered by the state, so you will have to pay for more advanced products used in treatment. As a result, many Poles choose private dental care.

Medicines are only available from pharmacies, except for some painkillers. Some medicines can only be obtained with a prescription from an authorised doctor. Most prescriptions are issued in electronic format (by text message - SMS with a code or by e-mail as a pdf file). You can always ask the doctor for a printed version if it is more convenient for you. Please note that most prescriptions are valid for 30 days .

The prices of medicines vary as some are reimbursed by public funds. For reimbursed medicines, patients pay a lump sum or a percentage of the price.

Some pharmacies are open 24 hours a day. They may charge an extra fee to sell medicines at night.

Before vaccination, it is important to discuss the vaccination schedule with your child's doctor. Visit a medical centre and register your child with a paediatrician. After the examination, the doctor will administer the vaccination and record the data on the card. It is also important to agree on an individual vaccination plan. The national vaccination programme includes the following mandatory vaccines, which are free of charge:

Apart from the above mandatory vaccinations, there are recommended vaccines that are paid :

  • rotavirus infection - babies between months 2 and 6
  • meningococcal disease - children between months 2 and 18 years old;
  • human papillomavirus infection (HPV) - girls after 12 years of age;
  • varicella - after month 13;
  • influenza - recommended for everyone (after month 6) before and during the flu season (autumn/winter) and especially for children (between month 6 until year 18) and adults after 65 years of age (for these 2 groups the vaccine may be free-of-charge), as well for high-risk groups e.g. people with weakened immune system or pregnant women;
  • tick-borne encephalitis - after month 13;
  • hepatitis A - after month 13.

In order to receive the additional vaccines you need to talk to your doctor in advance.

The National Medical Rescue System has been set up to provide help in emergencies - when delay could result in damage to health or loss of life. If you are insured, you have access to emergency medical services. If you are not insured, you will have to pay for the service.

To call an ambulan ce you should dial 999, which is available throughout the country, or the general emergency number 112. You can also go directly to the emergency room (SOR) of the nearest hospital.

At the reception desk, you will be asked to show your identification document (identity card, driving licence, passport or school card for children) to confirm your right to free healthcare. If you don't have your details in the electronic patient system, you can prove that you have health insurance by presenting your employment contract, a monthly report issued by your employer (called ZUS RMUA) or your contract with the National Health Fund if you have voluntary health insurance. If you don't have any of the above documents, you will have to pay for medical services. However, if you later provide proof of health insurance, you will be reimbursed.

Unconditional right to free medical services

In some cases, a foreigner, regardless of nationality and legal status, receives health care services unconditionally (even if he/she is not insured) and free of charge. This applies to urgent situations involving an immediate risk to life and health, where emergency treatment is essential, e.g. after a car accident resulting in a sudden deterioration in health leading to serious damage to health or loss of life.

Travelling within the EU: European Health Insurance Card and S1 document

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you free access to necessary medical services when travelling temporarily in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland for tourism or work purposes. It is a two-way card, which means that anyone who is covered by the state-funded National Health Insurance Scheme in Poland can obtain an EHIC - free of charge from the National Health Insurance Scheme office responsible for their place of residence.

It is important to note, however, that the EHIC entitles you to medical services under the same conditions as a resident of a particular country. This means that if a certain service is free in Poland, it may not be free abroad.

More about EHIC

If you are moving to another EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, you should get an S1 document instead of an EHIC to get health care in your new country of residence. An S1 entitles you to healthcare if you don't live in the country where you are insured. It can be useful for posted workers, frontier workers, pensioners and their family members.

To obtain the S1 document in Poland, you must apply to the NFZ. The document should be registered with the health insurance institution in your new country of residence.

#alert: A list of insurance policies accepted for purposes of Polish visa application has been published

Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published a list of insurers and insurance policies that meet the conditions indicated in Art. 25 sec. 1 point 2 lit. a and paragraph 1b of the Act of 12 December 2013 on foreigners, i.e. the conditions which an insurance policy must meet in order to be sufficient in the process of obtaining a Polish national Visa, applicable from 1 December 2020.

The list is available for download on the Ministry’s website, in the visa tab (https://www.gov.pl/web/dykomacja/wizy) at the bottom of the page.

Individual Polish consulates are not bound by the list published by the Ministry – in individual cases, the consulate processing a visa application may still verify whether the insurance certificate submitted with the application meets the requirements. A foreigner attending a visa appointment should therefore ensure that his/her insurance certificate confirms each of the applicable requirements, as discussed below:

In addition to the requirements existing before 1 December 2020 (regarding minimum insurance amount, minimum insurance scope, and minimum validity period), additional requirements have been introduced as of 1 December 2020, relating directly to insurance companies. According to them, the insurer providing the travel medical insurance:

1) must provide a 24-hour alarm center service, and

2a) must have its seat or branch in Poland, EU, EEA or Switzerland, or

2b) must meet additional conditions, i.e. publish results of an audit of its activities, carried out by a recognized international audit entity, indicating its stable financial situation, and publish data at least once every six months about the sum of collected premiums and the size of payments in a given type of insurance.

Tourists can review the different factors to consider before buying travel insurance to make an informed decision. They can also compare visitors medical insurance from top rated insurance providers and select the best visitor insurance for USA.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

U.S. citizens are restricted from entering Poland from Belarus and Russia unless they meet one of the exceptions currently in place. You may find the current list of exceptions at the following websites:

Polish Border Guard website listing exceptions in English and Polish

Polish Border Guard website noting the legal basis for the current restrictions in Polish

Sejm (Polish Parliament) website with the legislation for the current restrictions in Polish

U.S. citizens who do not meet one of the listed exceptions, but who want to return/evacuate from Belarus to the United States in transit through Poland or who need to enter Poland for humanitarian reasons, may seek a special permit to enter Poland only at the border crossing point in Brest-Terespol.

Traveling Through Europe : If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay. If you plan on transiting a Schengen country, review our U.S. Travelers in Europe page .
  • You will need sufficient proof of funds and a return plane ticket .
  • For additional information about visas for the Schengen area, see the Schengen Visa page.

Military/Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) Travelers : Active-duty U.S. military personnel may enter Poland under the SOFA with proper Department of Defense (DOD) identification and travel orders. All SOFA family members, civilian employees, and contractors must have valid passports. Active-duty military personnel should obtain a tourist passport before leaving the United States to accommodate off-duty travel. DOD travelers should consult with their unit for clearance  before  leaving the United States.

If you are transiting Poland  en route  to other countries,  know all entry and exit requirements for your final destination . You may be denied boarding for your connecting flight if you have incorrect documentation or insufficient validity on your passport. If you are denied boarding, you will need sufficient funds and a return airline ticket or an itinerary that does not require re-entry into the Schengen zone in order to return to the United States.

For further information on entry requirements and current visa information, please contact the consular section of the  Embassy of Poland , 2224 Wyoming Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, (202) 499-1700, or a Polish consulate in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, or Houston.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any  HIV/AIDS entry restrictions  for visitors to or foreign residents of Poland.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction,  and  customs  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime: While Poland has a low crime rate overall, the risk of crime is higher in major cities.

  • Safeguard your belongings in public areas . Thieves and pickpockets operate at major tourist destinations, railroad stations, and on trains (particularly overnight trains), trams, and buses. Report incidents of theft to the police.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight inside vehicles .
  • If someone directs you to pull over or signals that something is wrong with your car,  continue driving until you reach a safe spot  (such as a crowded gas station, supermarket, or a police station) to inspect your vehicle.
  • Only change money at banks or legitimate exchange kiosks (kantor). ATMs at commercial banks, large hotels, shopping malls, and airports are safest.
  • While casinos and gaming establishments are government-regulated, some are affiliated with or have attracted the interest of  organized crime.
  • Avoid adult entertainment venues . Such establishments have been known to present foreign customers with inflated charges and threaten those who refuse to pay. There have been some incidents of suspected drink spiking associated with these venues.
  • Travel in a group  when going out at night to nightclubs, discos, bars, or high-tourism areas, such as the Market Square in Krakow and Old Town in Warsaw.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable; avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Past demonstrations have turned violent.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams: See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Poland. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Most scammers pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help.

Tips to avoid scammers:

  • Look for red flags like their location is far away, their profile was recently created or seems to be too good to be true, the pace of the relationship is moving too quickly, or they ask for money.
  • Set up a phone call/video chat in the initial stages.
  • Do a reverse image search on the profile picture.
  • If they ask for help, you should refer them to the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate so we can work with local authorities to assist.
  •  If you believe you have been scammed, report the incident to local law enforcement right away and stop all communications with the scammer.

Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Lucrative sales
  • Gold purchase
  • Contracts with promises of large commissions
  • Grandparent/Relative targeting (kidnapping, arrested, medical emergency)
  • Free Trip/Luggage
  • Inheritance notices
  • Work permits/job offers
  • Bank overpayments

Technology Usage Abroad: Mobiles Devices are vulnerable to compromise, theft, and physical damage anywhere in the world. Best practices prior to traveling abroad are keeping all software (operating system and apps) updated and use virtual private network and encrypted voice over IP (VoIP) applications if possible. Make sure that all VPN/VoIP are reputable and U.S. based. Do not connect to unknown open Wi-Fi. GPS navigation apps are helpful in getting U.S. citizens around in a foreign country. Prior to using a GPS app, make sure you research the route to make sure it is safe. GPS navigation apps may give you the shortest route without safety considerations. Be cautious of using dating apps/online dating websites abroad as U.S. citizens can be targeted by scammers. Make sure to inform your friends and family of your whereabouts, meet at a well-known public location, and do not consume suspicious food or drinks. Avoid traveling alone to bars or nightclubs.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should first contact the local police. Report crimes to the local police by  calling 112  (multilingual emergency dispatch centers serving Poland and EU countries), and contact the  U.S. Embassy  in Warsaw at +48 (22) 504-2000 or the U.S. Consulate in Krakow at +48 (12) 424-5100. Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Provide a  list of health care providers  in Poland
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms
  • Provide a list of  local attorneys
  • Provide information on  victim’s compensation programs in the United States. A list of organizations providing assistance programs for victims of crimes in Poland is available on the website of the Ministry of Justice  here .
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence should contact local authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw or the U.S. Consulate in Krakow for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated. Rules (with regards to best practices and safety inspections) are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, imprisoned, or deported. A U.S. passport will not help you avoid arrest or prosecution.

Furthermore, some crimes are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask the police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy or Consulate immediately . Under Polish law, a person with Polish and U.S. citizenship is deemed to be a Polish citizen; however, dual U.S.-Polish nationals may still ask to see a U.S. consular officer. See our  webpage  for further information.

Special Circumstances: Polish Law prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition without proper permits. In Poland, it is illegal to possess, carry, transport, import or export arms or ammunition without proper authorization. Polish law broadly defines the meaning of “arms” to include items that may put life or health at risk, which may include parts of firearms or ammunition. Travelers have been arrested who were in possession of military items without proper permits. Please visit the Government of Poland’s website to find out more about obtaining a permit and our website on traveling with firearms .

Polish Customs enforces strict regulations concerning the export of items such as works of art. Contact the  Polish Embassy  in Washington, D.C., or a Polish consulate in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, or Houston for specific information regarding customs requirements.

Taking pictures of Polish military buildings or other national security/restricted objects is illegal.

Penalties are severe for possessing, using, or trafficking  illegal drugs  in Poland. Expect  long jail sentences  and  heavy fines  if convicted.

Local police can stop a car and request identification to establish identity and may ask the driver subsequent questions.

Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities prior to practicing or operating a business. Information about conducting business in Poland can be found at the  U.S. Embassy’s website .

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, including Poland, they may still be illegal according to local laws. Possessing or purchasing them is against the law. You may be subject to heavy fines and even imprisonment. You must also relinquish the items if you bring them back to the United States. For more information, see the  U.S. Department of Justice website , the  Polish Ministry of Finance Customs Department, and the European Commission .

  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

International Volunteers:

LGBTQI+ Travelers : There are  no legal restrictions  on either consensual same-sex sexual conduct between adults or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Poland. Polish law prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and the government enforces these provisions. The social acceptance of LGBTQI+ individuals is not as prevalent  as in the United States, though polling indicates tolerance is steadily increasing. Some politicians have made derogatory comments about LGBTQI+ persons. Media have not recently reported on physical and verbal attacks against LGBTQI+ persons, but community members have reported concerns about their physical safety. Travelers identifying openly as LGBTQI+ may face harassment. The practice of so-called conversion therapy is legal and offered on a voluntary basis. See our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information  page and section six of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities : Polish law prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities, but some discrimination occurs. Polish law states that buildings should be accessible for persons with disabilities, but in practice, many buildings remain inaccessible. Newer public trains, vehicles, and stations may be accessible, but older ones are not. Wheelchair users will find many challenges throughout the country. Service animals are generally allowed in public buildings and on transportation. Pedestrian crossings at intersections in large cities are generally equipped with audible crossing signals.

Students: See our  students abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers : See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Adequate medical care is available, but the quality of hospitals and nursing support may not be comparable to U.S. standards in all regions of Poland . Emergency services may be lacking in small towns and rural areas. Physicians are generally well-trained, and many younger doctors speak English (nurses and staff may not). While medication and treatment are generally substantially less costly than in the United States,  doctors and hospitals often expect cash payment prior to treatment . Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient. Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals. Medication, while generally available, may not be U.S. brand-name drugs.

For emergency services in Poland,  dial 112 . Ambulance services are widely available.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

The U.S. government does not pay overseas medical bills . Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance in lieu of payment at the time services are provided.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments up front, and you will have to seek reimbursement later from your medical insurance. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Ministry of Health Poland  to ensure the medication is legal in Poland and the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate to find information on traveling to and from Poland with narcotic and psychotropic medications.

Vaccinations: The CDC does not recommend and there is no requirement for specific vaccinations for U.S. citizen travelers.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery : Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. U.S. citizens traveling to Poland for medical tourism or elective surgery should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  website for more information on Medical Tourism.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.

Pharmaceuticals : U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for use in the United States. Please visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the  Food and Drug Administration  websites for more information.

Water Quality:  Food and water standards in Poland are similar to those in the United States. Most travelers do not need to take special food or water precautions beyond what they normally do at home. For more information please visit  CDC Traveler’s Health.

Adventure Travel:

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

Air Quality:

  • Cities in Poland have higher air pollution levels than major U.S. cities. Especially in Krakow, levels are often above U.S. health-based standards in the winter. Air quality is often good to moderate during warmer months. Visit  the European Environment Agency’s website  for information on air quality in Poland.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Road conditions in Poland differ significantly from those in the United States. Poland has the fourth-highest road fatality rate based on population in the European Union. Driving, especially after dark, is hazardous. Roads are sometimes narrow, poorly lit, frequently under repair (especially in summer), and are often also used by pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians account for approximately one-fourth of all traffic fatalities in Poland.

  • Polish roadside services, while not equal to those in the United States, are adequate. The Polish Automobile Association ( Polski Związek Motorowy Auto-Tour ) has multilingual operators and provides assistance countrywide 24/7. Call (22) 532-8403 or email  [email protected] .
  • The police emergency number is  997 , fire service is  998 , ambulance service is  999 , and the general emergency number is  112.

Traffic Laws: You must have a U.S. driver's license and International Driving Permit (IDP) in order to drive in Poland . U.S. citizens  cannot  obtain IDPs in Poland. If you stay in Poland for more than six months and continue to drive, you must obtain a Polish driver’s license. You can find information on obtaining an International Driving Permit  here .

  • Seat belt use is mandatory .
  • Use headlights year-round at all times .
  • Children under 12 must sit in rear seats . Children under 12 and shorter than 4’11” must use a child’s car seat.
  • Using hand-held cell phones while driving is prohibited .
  • Polish law provides zero tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs . Prison sentences for DUI violations or accidents caused by impaired drivers can range from two to twelve years.
  • Fines for traffic violations can be substantial . Non-residents are expected to pay the police officer at the time the ticket is issued. Be prepared to pay in cash in local currency.

Public Transportation : Public transportation in Poland is efficient, inexpensive, and safe. A ticket is required when boarding a bus or tram and if the ticket is not validated upon entry, you may be fined. In cities, taxis are available at major hotels and designated taxi stands and can be ordered in advance by phone.

Avoid taxis without a company name and/or telephone number printed on the light bar . Make sure that the driver displays his or her license inside the vehicle, has a functioning meter, and uses the meter when starting your trip. At airports in Poland, including Warsaw’s Chopin Airport, only use taxis found at designated stands and avoid unregistered taxi stalls.

Apps-based Ride Sharing: Internet-based ride services, such as Uber, iTaxi, and Freenow, are legal in Poland and growing in popularity as a safe ride option. Some ride service apps offer rides for women by women drivers. However, some internet-based ride services may not be authorized to drop off or pick up patrons in some downtown tourist areas.

See our  Road Safety  page for more information. Also, visit  Poland’s National Tourist Office  and Poland’s  General Roads and Highways Authority  responsible for road safety information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:   The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Poland’s Civil Aviation Authority as compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Poland’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Poland should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

Poland is filled with awe-inspiring architecture, magnificent landscapes, and unending history, written over every inch of the country. Having been at the center of the epic war, Poland conjures the images of its remarkable survival in countless monuments and memorials.

When to Visit

Poland has four distinct seasons. You can expect raised prices during the peak season, typically in the months of March-May and September-October .

While Poland is an ideal summer destination, tourists often visit in winters to dodge the crowds. Its vivid winter landscape competes with the likes of Switzerland and Italy. A mecca for the snowboarders, its mountains accommodate several thrilling ski resorts.

Schengen Visa for Poland

Every tourist needs to possess a Schengen Visa to travel to Poland. Considered as a boon for tourists, the Schengen Pact is the result of cooperation between 26 European countries. These countries have eliminated individual visa requirements, thereby minimizing border control. The Pact ensures tourists and citizens enjoy hassle-free movement within the member countries on a common visa. Simply put, a Schengen Visa lets one travel to any member country without applying for multiple visas.

How to Apply for a Schengen Visa

To apply for a Schengen Visa, one needs to download the Visa Application Form, which is easily available online. Submit the duly filled form along with valid documentation to the destination country's embassy in India. Remember, the form needs to be filled carefully stating the reason for your visit. It also needs to be supported with your recent financial statement. Also, availing the right travel insurance plan is mandatory for securing a visa approval for a Schengen country.

How to Travel

Poland is internationally well connected via bus, train and flight routes. The busiest airport for international flights, Warsaw-Frederic Chopin Airport, is abuzz with airlines flying at low-budget rates. Get around various cities within Poland by train or taxi that offers convenient travel at a low cost.

Where to Stay

With over 200 campsites, 150 official year-round hostels (450 in the summer), and hotels for every budget need, Poland will compel you to extend your trip. Things to Do

  • Warsaw Known as the Paris of the East, Warsaw boasts of modern skyscrapers and quaint cobbled streets. Revel in the vibrant music culture of Warsaw and uncover the rich history concealed in every exhibit of the museums. Visit the Royal Castle, Wilanow Palace and old town square for a dose of medieval Poland.
  • Krakow Poland's medieval capital, Krakow scintillates with life. Having escaped any demolitions during the war, the streets and monuments of Krakow are perfectly preserved. Do not miss the Wawel Castle and the main market square in Old Town Krakow that is still the city's cultural hub.
  • Auschwitz-Birkenau The largest concentration camp during World War II, Auschwitz-Birkenau is a memorial and museum devoted to the innumerable murders during the war. Pay homage to the victims of the holocaust and learn more about the tragic history behind the grim buildings.
  • Wieliczka Salt Mine Wieliczka Salt Mine offers a glimpse into the past. Until 2007, it was one of the oldest operating mines. It illustrates the historic stages of the evolution of mining techniques in the Europe during the medieval century. Marvel at the labyrinth of passages leading to caverns, underground lakes, chapels, and sculptures carved from the crystalline rock salts.
  • Gdansk Old Town Centuries of being a prosperous naval town made Gdansk a vibrant city of surprising un-Polish architecture. Be marveled by the brick-red churches, stop by a cafe and taste the lip-smacking potato pancakes, or savor a Makowiec (traditional poppy seed pastry) for dessert. Enjoy the tranquility of the dockside gardens or take an intriguing cruise ride up the river to explore the old town.
  • Slowinski National Park : Situated on the Baltic coast, the Park features moving sand dunes, local fauna and migratory birds
  • Bialowieza Forest : One the last remaining primeval forests of Europe, it is also home to the European Bison, one of the only two extant bison species

Do's & Don'ts in Poland

  • Beware of the fraudulent currency exchange bureaus rampant in the hot tourist spots.
  • Carry Polish ztoty coins with you as Poland has many coin denominations. Most roadside vendors will demand change and refuse to sell products if you run out of it.
  • While using a public washroom, understand the signs that indicate the gender; triangle is for men and circle is for women.

Enjoy Poland to the fullest with a peace of mind that a comprehensive travel plan offers.
