How Does Tipping Work on a Disney Cruise?  Your Guide to Gratuities

Tipping is often a source of confusion on Disney cruises. Does gratuity come with the fare? If not, when should you tip, and how much? How does tipping work on a Disney Cruise?  Here are the answers you need to know.

Note: Disney updated its standard gratuity amounts in July 2022.  This article has been updated to reflect the new amounts.

Is Tipping Included in the Cost of a Disney Cruise?

The cost of a Disney cruise covers your stateroom , activities, and dining experiences (except for specialty dining). But there’s one thing that’s not included in the base price of a Disney cruise: gratuities. Even though gratuities are technically optional, it is customary to tip certain crew members, and Disney expects you to do it.

In some situations, gratuities are automatically added to your stateroom account; in others, you decide whether to tip.

When are Automatic Gratuities Added to your Account?

There are four Crew Members Disney always expects you to tip, as they serve you for the entire duration of your cruise.  To simplify the tipping process, Disney automatically charges these gratuities to your onboard account at the end of your cruise (unless you have prepaid the gratuities or instructed Guest Services not to add them).

Which Crew Members Are Covered by Automatic Gratuities?

The four tipping positions associated with automatic gratuities are your stateroom host/hostess and three members of your regular dining room serving crew:

Your designated dining room server is responsible for taking care of the table service during dinner at the rotational dining restaurants .

Disney adds $4.75 (per passenger, per night) in automatic gratuity for your Server.

Here’s what you can expect to pay the Server for the length of your cruise (in total):

  • For a 3-night cruise: $14.25
  • For a 4-night cruise: $19.00
  • For a 7-night cruise: $33.25

Assistant Server

This person assists your dining room server with the drinks, food, and cleanup.

Disney adds $3.75 (per passenger, per night) in automatic gratuity for your Assistant Server.

Here’s what you can expect to pay the Assistant Server for the length of your cruise (in total):

  • For a 3-night cruise: $11.25
  • For a 4-night cruise: $15.00
  • For a 7-night cruise: $26.25

Dining Room Head Server

The Head Server acts as a maître d’. You will be assigned a Head Server, who will check in with you and ensure you are satisfied with your dining experience, and oversees the other servers.

Disney adds $1.25 (per passenger, per night) in automatic gratuity for your Head Server.

Here’s what you can expect to pay the Head Server for the length of your cruise (in total):

  • For a 3-night cruise: $3.75
  • For a 4-night cruise: $5.00
  • For a 7-night cruise: $8.75

Stateroom Host/Hostess

Your Stateroom Host/Hostess is the person who cleans your stateroom every day. They are responsible for making your bed, turning it down at night, leaving chocolate, etc.

Disney adds $4.75 (per passenger, per night) in automatic gratuity for your Stateroom Host.

Here’s what you can expect to pay the Stateroom Host for the length of your cruise (in total):

For those staying in a Concierge-level room, additional tipping is customary for the Stateroom Assistant Host and the Concierge Lounge staff.

To calculate the total amount of automatic gratuity you are expected to pay, add up the total nightly tips for each of these four categories ($4.75 + $3.75 + 1.25 + $4.75 = $14.50 ), then multiply that by the number of people sailing (regardless of age) and by the number of nights your cruise will last.

For example, a couple on a 3-night cruise should expect to tip $87.00 ($14.50 x 2 x 3).

A family of four on a 7-night cruise will have a suggested tip of $406 ($14.50 x 4 x 7).

Most people find that Disney’s automatic gratuities process helps simplify the tipping process. However, you may wish to do things differently. You can request to adjust these amounts, pay gratuities in cash, or pre-pay before your cruise begins (see below).

Note : The Dining Room Manager may also be tipped, though most people do not. Additionally, if any of the service crew members do not provide the quality of service you expect, please let management know immediately. Disney Cruise Line will do everything it can to rectify the situation. They will also accommodate your dietary needs if you make them known before ordering.

How do you Pre-Pay Gratuities on a Disney Cruise?

Gratuities are added to your Disney cruise account automatically prior to the end of your cruise as a default. It is also possible to pay the suggested tip in advance by contacting either Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent no later than three days before the cruise starts .

If you prefer to pay for everything before you step aboard, that’s great! Just make sure you pre-pay the tips at least three days before your departure date, and you’ll have nothing to worry about on your cruise.

If you have questions about tipping on Disney cruises, want to step up your pre-payments, or wonder how much a Disney cruise will cost , it’s time to contact The Vacationeer . They can provide up to $1,000 in FREE Disney onboard credit , Disney’s best available pricing, and expert planning advice and assistance.

Can you Remove Gratuities on a Disney Cruise?

Yes, you can remove, reduce, or increase the automatic gratuities on a Disney cruise by visiting Guest Services during the cruise.

Disney automatically charges your onboard account the standard tip amounts (unless you pre-pay). No tip amount is set in stone, so Disney allows you to adjust them before the cruise ends if you want to give more or wish to give less; just contact Guest Services onboard your Disney Cruise .

How Do my Crew Members Know I Tipped Them?

At the end of your cruise, you will receive four envelopes and a sheet detailing all automatic tips that have been charged to your room folio.  This sheet is perforated so you can separate the section relating to each Crew Member and place it in the envelope (along with additional cash should you desire).

You may give these envelopes directly to the serving team on the last night at dinner or at breakfast on your final morning.  For your stateroom hostess, you may give the envelope to them in person or leave it in your room.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a chance to pass a tip envelope to a particular Crew Member… they’ll still receive the appropriate amount designated for them in your stateroom folio (but of course won’t get any actual cash you might have included).

Tipping Envelopes are provided at the end of your Disney Cruise

To summarize how Disney’s automatic gratuities work, you can 1. let Disney charge your account automatically, 2. pre-pay your gratuities, or 3. pass out individual envelopes with cash. It’s up to you! Just let your travel agent or Guest Services know if you wish to do something other than automatic gratuities.

Are Tips included at Palo and Remy?

Specialty dining on Disney cruises is a step above the regular dining room experience and is not included in a Disney cruise’s base price. You can choose between Palo and Remy, which both offer exquisite cuisine and an intimate setting.

Regarding tipping, an 18% gratuity will automatically be applied at dinner at Palo & Remy . However, you can also add additional gratuity if you feel that the service warrants it. For brunch, tips are included in the dining charge, but you can add gratuity if you desire . Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide how much to tip, but remember that the staff greatly appreciates the extra gratuity.

How Does Tipping Work at Bars and Clubs ?

Bar, beverage, wine, and deck service tabs will be automatically charged an 18% gratuity. Gratuities may be charged to your stateroom folio.

A gratuity of 18% will be automatically added to any drink ordered from a bartender, whether it is non-alcoholic or alcoholic. Sodas, bottled water, and alcohol ordered from room service will also have an automatic gratuity. Additionally, your server will add a gratuity to your bill if you order bottled water, a smoothie, or alcohol in the dining rooms.

Do you Tip for Room Service on a Disney Cruise?

Room service is one of the many perks of being on cruising with Disney . You can order anything you want, and it will be brought right to your stateroom door. Best of all, with the exception of a few packaged items and drinks, room service is complimentary. However, even though there is no charge for the food, it is customary to tip the person who brings it to your room .

You can add a tip to your onboard account when you sign the bill or give a cash tip. Most people leave a tip of at least $5. Whether or not you choose to tip is up to you.

Are Gratuities Included for Spa Services?

Senses Spa & Salon offers a wide range of spa services, including massages, facials, and other pampering services. Unfortunately, the cost of spa services is not included in the Disney cruise nor its per-night automatic gratuities (though we still consider spa treatments at Senses to be a worthy splurge ).

That said, an 18% gratuity will automatically be applied to all spa services you receive. You do not need to add more unless you are so inclined.

Can you use Cash on a Disney Cruise Ship?

When planning a Disney cruise, one question that often arises is whether you can use cash onboard the ship. The answer is that all onboard purchases are charged back to your stateroom folio, but you can use cash to pay that folio.  You can also give tips via cash if you wish.   Here are a few things to keep in mind.

To begin with, you may use the credit card on file, American Express Travelers Cheques denominated in USD (United States Dollars), or pay with cash. Secondly, you must settle all charges before you leave the ship. This means that if you plan on using cash, you’ll need to have enough to cover your entire bill (or at least have a second payment method to use as well). Lastly, remember that gratuities are not included in your cruise fare, so you’ll need to have cash on hand to tip bus drivers, porters, tour guides, etc

When you’re off the ship at a port (except for Disney’s private island Castaway Cay ), your shipboard folio is no good for payment.  Local currency or a credit/debit card is needed.

It’s generally best to bring a mix of cash and other forms of payment when cruising with Disney. That way, you’ll be prepared for anything.

How Much Do you Tip a Porter on a Disney Cruise?

Remember to bring small bills with you. This will make it easier to tip porters and bus drivers without breaking larger bills. Second, if you use Disney transportation (or any other transportation services), consider giving your bus driver a few dollars after arriving.

You should also tip people who assist you with your luggage, whether they’re unloading your bags from a bus or bringing them to your stateroom. It’s up to you how much you tip.

Should you Tip the Tour Guides on Port Adventures?

If you’re taking a Disney cruise, consider bringing some cash to tip your tour guides and drivers. While it’s not required, it’s good etiquette to show your appreciation for their service with a gratuity.

Most guides and drivers are very familiar with the customs of their home country, so they can be a valuable resource for information about what to see and do during your trip. They may also be able to provide insights into the culture that you wouldn’t get from reading a guidebook.

Tipping is generally done in cash, and US dollars are widely accepted in many foreign ports, so if you’re planning to take an excursion while on your cruise, be sure to bring some cash to show your appreciation for your guides and drivers.

How Does Tipping Work for the Concierge Level?

Prepare to tip even more if you are sailing at the concierge level . Concierge hosts rely heavily on tips, so be sure to tip generously . How much you tip is always up to you, but Disney now recommends at least $8 per passenger, per night, for the Concierge Lounge hosts.  In addition, you’ll find your Concierge Stateroom Assistant Host is factored into the nightly automatic gratuities normally reserved only for the Stateroom Host and dining room staff. Remember that your concierge hosts are there to make your cruise as enjoyable as possible, so don’t hesitate to give them a little extra if they go above and beyond.

Are you expected to Tip for Disney Babysitting Services?

On a Disney Cruise, gratuity is not expected for babysitting services . However, if you feel that the babysitter did an exceptional job and you would like to show your appreciation, you may do so at your discretion.

Onboard Services – Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any expected amount for gratuities, and what’s the best way to pay them?

It is customary to give gratuities in recognition of exceptional service, which you’ll receive in abundance aboard the ship. We recommend a gratuity amount of $14.50 USD per night, per stateroom Guest, including infants and children. Pre-Paid Gratuities are distributed to the Crew Members who take care of you in the following roles:

  • Dining room server
  • Dining room assistant server
  • Dining room head server
  • Stateroom host

Guests staying in Concierge Staterooms and Suites are recommended a gratuity amount of $15.50 USD per night, per stateroom Guest. This includes gratuity for the Stateroom assistant host, who services the Concierge accommodations, in addition to the positions listed above.

Easily pre-pay gratuities online to create a carefree, all-inclusive experience by visiting My Reservations in your Disney account and following the prompts for Pre-Paid Gratuities. If you booked your Disney cruise with a travel agent, please contact them to apply this payment for you.

If you did not get a chance to pre-pay before boarding the ship, we will automatically charge your onboard account the suggested gratuity amount per Guest per night. Once on board the ship, if you wish to adjust the amount of your pre-paid gratuities, please visit Guest Services for assistance.

Keep in mind that pre-paid gratuities can only be adjusted among the Crew Members who take care of you in the following roles: Dining Room Server, Dining Room Assistant Server, Dining Room Head Server and Stateroom Host. Requests to refund pre-paid gratuities may only be processed in full back to the original form of payment, which may include forms of payment made by a travel agent.

Not Included Pre-Paid Gratuities do not include the following gratuities, which are either included in the charge or based on your discretion:

  • Extras added to rotational dining meals such as alcoholic beverages

Disney Cruise Line Gratuities (What to Know about Tipping)

hands holding ten dollar bills

If you’re preparing for a Disney Cruise Line vacation, you may be looking for information on the tipping process. Some first time cruisers assume that gratuities are included in the price of the cruise fare, and they don’t realize that tips are actually an added cost.

Since tip amounts are automatically added to your onboard account at the end of your trip, it’s a good idea to know exactly how much to budget for gratuities. This way, you aren’t completely shocked when you receive your final statement.

In this post, we will discuss the price of Disney cruise gratuities, including a breakdown each cast member position who receives these tips. We will also explain the Disney Cruise Line tipping guidelines for concierge guests along with other crew members you may want to tip during your vacation.

How much are gratuities?

If you’re wanting to plan ahead and determine the amount to budget for Disney cruise gratuities, it’s actually super easy to calculate. You just need to know the length of your cruise and the number of people in your cabin.

tip jar with money inside

It’s also handy to have a calculator nearby, so you can multiply the numbers easily. Disney Cruise Line recommends a gratuity amount of $14.50 per person per night. So, in order to calculate the amount your family will owe for gratuities, you would multiply:

$14.50 X Number of People in Cabin X Length of Cruise = Amount You Owe

For example, a family of four who is taking a seven night cruise would owe $406 for gratuities.

$14.50 X 4 People X 7 Nights = $406

It’s important to note that every member of your family is included in these calculations. Many families often ask if they have to pay gratuities for a baby or a toddler. The answer is Yes. And, after cruising with a toddler , I totally see why! I think my family’s stateroom attendant and dining team worked harder for my toddler than they did for any of the other members of our family.

Disney cruise ship

From removing soiled diapers from our cabin to preparing bite-sized foods at each meal, the crew members really go out of their way to ease the stress off of the parents.

Prepaid Gratuities

You can pay your Disney Cruise Line gratuities in a couple different ways. Many families like to pre-pay their gratuities, so they don’t have to worry about the cost after their vacation. This allows the cruise to feel more like an all-inclusive trip.

In order to pre-pay your tips, you just need to login to your Disney Cruise Line account and follow the directions to pay gratuities upfront. (Note that travel agents will need to do this for cruisers who booked through a travel agent.)

Disney Cruise Line Tip Envelopes

If you do not want to prepay your gratuities, you can pay them on the ship at the end of your cruise. On the final evening, your stateroom attendant will place disembarkation instructions in your cabin. These directions will outline the procedures for your last night and final morning onboard the ship.

Disney Cruise Tipping

In addition to the debarkation instructions, your stateroom attendant will leave gratuity tickets and envelopes in your cruise cabin. Each envelope will name a specific service position, including server, assistant server, head server, and stateroom attendant. (To those new to the Disney rotational dining rooms process, the three servers rotate with your family each night of the cruise so that you have the same serving team every evening at dinner.)

Disney Cruise Line main dining room with checkered floor

The serving team and stateroom attendant receive a specified gratuity amount from the recommended $14.50 per person per day. In other words, Disney Cruise Line breaks down the $14.50 as follows:

  • $4.75 to your server in the rotational dining restaurants
  • $3.75 to your assistant dining room server
  • $1.25 to your dining room head server
  • $4.75 to your stateroom attendant

If you want to figure out the total amount of gratuities for each position, you just multiply the amount for that cast member times the number of people in your stateroom times the length of the cruise.

Disney ship and restaurant with text overlay Guide to Disney Cruise Gratuities

Note that you don’t have to actually calculate any of this onboard. The amounts are printed directly on the gratuity tickets, so it’s a super easy process. I just wanted to explain what the formula for each position looks like.

$4.75 for Server X 4 People X 7 Nights = $133 Total for Server

Each gratuity ticket in your stateroom will list the amount that the specified crew member gets tipped. For example, a family of four on a 7-night cruise would find gratuity tickets that look like this:

  • Server – $133
  • Assistant Server – $105
  • Head Server – $35
  • Stateroom Attendant – $133

All you have to do onboard is just put the ticket labeled “server” into the envelope that says “server” and so forth until each ticket is inside its corresponding envelope. At the end of the cruise, each tip amount will be automatically taken out of your account with the credit card on file.

Printable Cruise Planner

Also, you are free to make adjustments to the amounts listed. In order to do this, you can visit Guest Services. Or you can just add cash to the envelope if you’re wanting to increase the tip amount.

Concierge Tip Calculator

Disney Cruise Line recently announced recommendations for concierge Level tips. concierge guests will see total recommended gratuity amounts of $15.50 per person per day. These gratuities are broken down the same as above with the addition of an assistant stateroom host.

disney cruise concierge stateroom

The stateroom hosts (aka stateroom attendants) clean your cruise cabin and bathrooms each morning. They also provide turndown service each evening and even leave special treats and towel animals for guests. The concierge gratuities can be broken down as follows:

  • $4.75 to your server
  • $3.75 to your assistant server
  • $1.25 to your head server
  • $4.75 to your stateroom host
  • $1.00 to your stateroom assistant host

Additionally, one of the concierge perks for guests is the use of a private lounge with food and beverages. Concierge guests also have access to a Concierge Lounge Team who provide extra services.

concierge sun deck on disney magic

Since these cast members are not included in the recommended gratuities listed above, Disney Cruise Line has a suggested gratuity amount of $8.00 per stateroom guest per night for these concierge hosts. So, a family of four sailing on a seven-night cruise would tip the Concierge team:

$8.00 X 4 People X 7 Nights = $224

Again, this is in addition to the recommended gratuities of $15.50 listed above. You can read more about my family’s experience with Disney Cruise Line’s Concierge Level in this post – Upgrading to Concierge at the Port .

Additional Charges

In addition to the service positions listed above, guests sailing on the Disney Cruise Line ships may also tip at other times. Some items and people you may need to tip on your cruise include (but are not limited to):

  • Specialty Drinks in the Dining Rooms
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Senses Spa Services
  • Adult-only Specialty Restaurants
  • Room Service
  • Porters at Cruise Terminal
  • Port Adventures

It’s always a good idea to bring along several $1 and $5 bills for tipping crew members. Even though the cast members onboard the ship are easy to tip through your card on file, you will probably want to have cash on hand for others you come into contact with throughout your trip. For example, my family and I like to travel with small bills to tip people like the porters who handle our luggage and the driver who drops us off at the cruise port.

You can find more tips like this in our post on Disney Cruise Line Secrets for First Timers .)

Final Thoughts on Tipping on a Disney Cruise

Overall, the tipping process onboard the ships is really straightforward and easy. If you choose to take advantage of pre-paid gratuities, you won’t have to worry about the main Disney cruise gratuities at the end of your trip. Those families who prefer to pay gratuities on the final night of their trip will find the procedures super easy as well.

You just place each pre-printed ticket into the correct envelope. If you have any questions while on board, you can visit the Guest Services desk to speak to a cast member for additional guidance. We hope you enjoy the world-class service you’ll receive on your Disney cruise as you make life-long memories with your family!

Question…so if you pre-pay gratuities (which we did for our April cruise), you don’t do anything with the envelopes or give anything to your servers? I was under the impression we still gave them something that indicated we had pre-paid. This is our first Disney cruise so I’m just trying to figure it all out!

Hi Jillian,

On the final evening of your cruise, you should receive gratuities envelopes AND printed slips of paper stating how much you pre-paid for each position. You put the slips of paper in each corresponding envelope to hand to the servers. So, you are basically just handing them paper with a dollar amount printed on it. You can add additional cash to the envelope if you feel inclined, but it’s not necessary. Hope that helps!

Disney Cruise Line Increases Base Gratuities – Adds Recommendation for Concierge Guests (July 2022)

This week, Disney Cruise Line quietly modified their FAQ page on tipping increasing the recommended gratuity guidelines for select positions and for the first time defining a minimum for Concierge. The overall recommended minimum increase totals to $1 per day per guest.

As of July 2022, Disney Crusie Line recommends a base gratuity amount of $14.50 per night , per stateroom Guest, including infants and children—which will be dispersed to the Crew Members who serve you daily in the rotational dining restaurants and your stateroom:

  • Dining Room Server – $4.75 per person/per day
  • Assistant Dining Room Server – $3.75 per person/per day
  • Dining Room Head Server – $1.25 per person/per day
  • Stateroom Host – $4.75 per person/per day

The recommended increase is $0.25 per person/per day for the Assistant Dining Room Server, Dining Room Server, Dining Room Head Server and Stateroom Host/Hostess.

Concierge Guests

For the first time, Disney’s FAQ references Concierge guests. For Concierge Guests Disney Cruise Line added the Assistant Stateroom Host/Hostess position to their recommended gratuities. The recommended gratuity is $15.50 per person/per day based on the length of the cruise for Concierge Guests.

  • Assistant Stateroom Host – $1.00 per person/per day

Additionally, Concierge Guests often ask for guidance regarding gratuities for the Concierge Lounge Team (Concierge Managers and the Concierge Servers).

  • Concierge Lounge Team (Concierge Managers and the Concierge Servers) : Guests staying in Concierge accommodations are recommended a gratuity amount of $8.00 per night, per stateroom Guest. However, it is always up to the Guest to determine what they feel is appropriate.

It is worth noting, the concierge team also takes care of the Cabanas at Castaway Cay. Therefore, keep this into consideration if you are booking a cabana as it is nice to add a little more for the teams efforts during your day ashore at Disney’s private island.

Pre-paid gratuities that were added to a reservation prior to July 2, 2022 will be honored. However, I am a sure y’all will take care of the crew and add to their tips!

The last time Disney increased the recommended gratuities was in January 2019 .

Our tip calculator has been updated based on the new individual position recommendations.

We recommend pre-paying your base gratuities. Then, onboard adding an additional cash tip handed directly to the individual. We typically write thank you notes to the various tipped positions to go along with the additional cash tip. Remember, Disney Cruise Line is simply recommending a base amount, for the most part, the cast works extremely hard to ensure you have a great experience. Tip them well.

What are your thoughts on the increase? Do you normally add additional gratuity based on overall service or do you stick with the recommended tip amounts?

They work so hard and deserve every penny. We always give extra too.

' src=

They give such excellent and personal service. They deserve well over base in my opinion.

' src=

My wife and I have always given more. They earn it just by the fact they become friends for time you are on board and stay friends after you leave the ship.

' src=

I have a question regarding the dollar amount for this. Stateroom assistant host: Guests staying in Concierge Staterooms and Suites are recommended a gratuity amount of $15.50 per night, per stateroom Guest. Does that mean $31.00 for two people in a room per day? So for a 3 day cruise the tip would be $93.00

' src=

Assistant Stateroom Host is $1/guest/day = $6 for a 3 day cruise. $15.50/guest/day covers all positions listed. Dining Room Server $4.75+ Assistant Dining Room Server $3.75 + Dining Room Head Server $1.25 + Stateroom Host $4.75 + Assistant Stateroom Host $1.00 = $15.50/guest/day x 3 x 2 = $93.

' src=

I think the Concierge amount is fair, definitely add more for cabana tip for sure. It might be a little on the low side as listed (I’m just calculating for two though), but I had seen some recommendations online that was a little too crazy high, but also by not listing it at all, a lot of people were probably giving zero! Also don’t forget to take care of the concierge bartenders if they’re good (which they usually are, except for one time, oh boy.)

' src=

In my experience, the Concierge team does not take care of the Cabanas on Serenity Bay. The Cabana hosts there come from other areas of the ship’s crew, and those hosts should definitely be tipped separately from the Concierge team.

It may have changed since covid, but in our two times getting cabanas around 2019 it was the concierge hosts that handled the cabanas both times.

Understanding Disney Cruise Line Gratuities: A Complete Guide

Understanding the gratuity system is an essential part of planning your Disney Cruise Line vacation. You'll learn about automatic gratuities, recommended extra tips, and how to give thanks to your servers and room host.

Disney Cruise Line recommends gratuities of $14.50 per person, per night for guests in non-concierge staterooms. Concierge guests are recommended to tip $15.50 per person, per night, which is automatically added to the onboard account.

Tipping Customs

Rewarding Exceptional Service

When you experience service that delights and surprises, offering an additional gratuity is a customary way to show appreciation. Disney Cruise Line automatically adds standard gratuities to your account, but unique circumstances often merit extra recognition. Whether it's your stateroom host going the extra mile to celebrate a special event you're having on board or a particularly memorable dining service, consider handing over an envelope with a little extra to express your gratitude.

Typical additional gratuities:

  • Stateroom host: $1-$2 extra per night
  • Dining Team: 10-15% of your dining bill
  • Exceptional personal service: Discretionary

It's important to remember that these additional tips are entirely at your discretion and should reflect your personal experience and satisfaction with the service provided.

Calculator and Tools

Calculating your tipping can be quite straightforward with the help of a gratuity calculator. These tools will help you estimate the standard gratuities covered on your Disney Cruise and assist in understanding what additional charges might be appropriate for those exceptional service providers.

Here is how to use these tools effectively:

  • Enter the number of nights of your cruise.
  • Add the number of people in your party.
  • Review the standard gratuity amounts provided.
  • Adjust the figures to account for any exceptional service you wish to reward.

By using a gratuity calculator, you ensure that no member of the cruise staff is overlooked and that your additional gratuities are fair and proportionate to the service received.

When you’re on a Disney cruise, understanding how to manage gratuities for the exceptional service received is crucial. Gratuities are a way to thank the crew for their hard work, and Disney Cruise Line makes it convenient for you to handle this aspect of your trip.

Adjustments and Disputes

If you feel the service on your cruise either surpassed expectations or fell short, you can speak to Guest Services to make adjustments to gratuity amounts. It's essential that you review your gratuities before the end of the cruise to ensure that any changes are processed in time.

  • To increase gratuities: Simply inform Guest Services, and they’ll update your onboard account accordingly.
  • To decrease gratuities: Discuss your concerns with Guest Services. They can assist with any disputes and modify the gratuities if necessary.

Tracking Expenses

Throughout your cruise, it's easy to oversee the gratuities added to your onboard account. You’ll receive a breakdown of suggested gratuity amounts, which are typically charged per person, per day.

  • Stateroom Guest Receipts: Detailed receipts will be provided to you, displaying the suggested gratuities and any you've elected to adjust.
  • Onboard Account Access: Check your current expenses, including gratuities, at any time using the Disney Cruise Line app or the in-room television system.

Keeping track of these expenses helps you manage your budget and ensures that the crew members who contribute to your cruise experience are duly recognized.

When planning your Disney Cruise adventure, understanding the gratuity policies is essential to ensure you're prepared for the customary tipping practices and budget accordingly.

Tipping on a Disney Cruise Wasn’t What I Expected – (Here’s How it Works)

When I disembarked my first Disney cruise, I’d had a brilliant time, but something happened with the tipping and automatic gratuities which I didn’t expect.

I’ve cruised with many cruise lines and haven’t ever come across the situation I encountered on my Disney cruise.

Disney funnel, Emma cruises

In this post, we will look at how tipping works on a Disney cruise, how the gratuities are split between the crew, and how they can be removed if required.

Disney are a big American cruise line and they add automatic gratuities.

The idea behind automatic gratuities is that you don’t have to give physical tips to the crew because they’ve automatically been added to your account. They’ll automatically come off your card – you don’t have to see them – you don’t have to do anything with them.

That’s kind of the selling point of automatic gratuities.

I’m from the UK, and we don’t have the same tipping culture as Americans do.

Most of the cruise lines here tend to add in the cost of gratuities to the cruise fare.

I personally prefer that, but if there are gratuities, I just pay them, then they’re done.

Normally, on every other cruise, I’ve ever been on, I never have to think about the gratuities again, because I have just paid them.

Some people will tip extra in cash above that, which is totally fine, and always appreciated I’m sure – but you don’t have to.

I feel like if you’ve done the automatic gratuities, you can rest easy, you can enjoy your cruise, you’ve given everybody your tips and the idea is that you don’t have to do anything with it again.

How Does Tipping Work on a Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Line charges each guest an automatic gratuity to cover the tips for the crew, this is usually $14.50 per person per night.

This amount is split between the crew members automatically and can be removed if requested. Guests are welcome to tip above and beyond this amount .

On Disney, they have automatic gratuities, so I was a bit confused when I came back to my room and I saw a letter and it said:

You’ve paid automatic gratuities and what we want you to do now is to take this piece of paper, to rip it up into everybody’s names and how much money you’re giving them and then put it in the little envelopes and go and give them to the people. I just found that really strange…

disney cruise line tipping letter in cabin

I just thought that the selling point of automatic gratuities was that I didn’t have to do that really awkward thing of handing over cash, or handing over envelopes at dinner.

It may be to do with the fact that I’m from the UK and we don’t really do the tipping thing that I find that so awkward. We pretty much just said “Thank you, Bye,” – and left the little pieces of paper on the table at dinner on the last night and then we left.

“As a convenience, we have added gratuities of $14.50 per day for each member of your party to your onboard account. Your gratuity tickets are located on the reverse side of this form. Please separate them into the gratuity envelopes provided so that you can personally present them to your service team” Disney Cruise Line

I found it really strange and awkward. I just didn’t really know how to act.

I don’t know if it’s designed like that, maybe so that you’ll slip in an extra $20 here – or maybe some people actually like giving the envelope and giving the tip to the person and saying “thank you. “

For me, that’s why I pay the automatic gratuities so that I don’t have to go through that. It did say in the letter that if you don’t give them to them, they’ll still get the money.

The pieces of paper are pretty much just a symbol, but I kind of felt like I had to, or otherwise, they would feel like I didn’t appreciate them and I want to say thank you.

How Are Disney Cruise Tips Split Amongst The Crew?

The below shows the automatic gratuity costs split among the crew. The automatic gratuities are given only to these four positions and crew members in behind-the-scenes roles, such as the onboard laundry, don’t receive a part of this.

disney cruise line automatic gratuity breakdown graph

I just don’t know where I stand on this.

If you came into your cabin after paying your automatic gratuities and had to give these pieces of paper to the crew, would you find that weird?

Can You Remove The Automatic Gratuities on a Disney Cruise?

It is possible to remove the automatic gratuities on a Disney cruise by visiting Reception. The automatic gratuities can also be reduced.

If you do want to remove automatic gratuities expect to be asked why, it’s generally assumed that this will only be removed in the case of bad service.

Additional Gratuities

There are a couple of other places where gratuities are added:

  • In the speciality restaurants Palo/Remy – a18% gratuity is added at dinner time. Gratuities aren’t automatically added for brunch.
  • In the spa and salon – 18% gratuity is added to all treatments.
  • All drinks have 18% added on as an automatic gratuity.

In this comprehensive guide to Disney Cruise gratuities, we have explored various tips and policies to help you navigate the sometimes confusing world of onboard tipping. We understand that planning a Disney Cruise vacation involves not only choosing the perfect itinerary but also understanding the gratuity guidelines to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for both guests and crew members.

One key aspect to keep in mind is that Disney Cruise Line has a unique approach to gratuities compared to other cruise lines. Rather than a traditional tipping system, Disney employs a service charge per guest per day, which covers gratuities for dining and stateroom services. This system provides convenience and transparency for guests, eliminating the need to carry cash and calculate individual tips.

It is important to note that these service charges are automatically added to your onboard account and can be adjusted or removed if necessary. However, it is generally recommended to maintain the suggested gratuity amounts, as they are designed to fairly compensate the hardworking crew members who go above and beyond to create magical experiences for guests.

Ultimate Guide to Disney Cruise Gratuities: Tips and Policies Explained

When it comes to understanding the breakdown of these service charges, it is crucial to be aware of the different categories involved. Disney Cruise Line divides the service charges into three main areas: dining room services, stateroom services, and other shipboard services. Each category has a specific recommended gratuity amount, which can be found on Disney Cruise Line’s official website.

To ensure you are well-informed about the tipping policies, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the specific guidelines for your chosen itinerary. These guidelines may vary depending on the length of your cruise and the number of guests in your party. It is also worth noting that concierge-level guests have different suggested gratuity amounts, reflecting the enhanced services provided in this category.

While the service charges cover most aspects of gratuities on a Disney Cruise, it is customary to tip additional onboard experiences, such as specialty dining and spa services. These additional gratuities are not included in the service charges and should be given directly to the appropriate crew members. It is always a good idea to carry some cash for these purposes.

For those who want to express their appreciation to exceptional crew members, Disney Cruise Line offers an optional gratuity program called “Tips on Demand.” This program allows guests to recognize exceptional service by providing additional gratuities beyond the recommended amounts. It is a wonderful way to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of individuals who have made your cruise experience truly memorable.

In conclusion, understanding the gratuity guidelines on a Disney Cruise is essential for a seamless and enjoyable vacation. By familiarizing yourself with the service charges, recommended gratuity amounts, and additional tipping opportunities, you can ensure that the crew members who make your trip magical are properly compensated for their exceptional service.

To delve further into this topic and gain more insights into Disney Cruise gratuities, we recommend visiting the official Disney Cruise Line website, where you can find detailed information on tipping policies, service charge breakdowns, and additional gratuity options. Tipping aboard Disney Cruise Line: Everything you need to know about gratuity on a Disney Cruise

in Disney , Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Ship

Disney Cruise Line offers unforgettable Disney vacations aboard state-of-the-art, magical cruise ships. A Disney Cruise has all of the magic of the Disney Parks at sea, but one of the features that make Disney cruises a top vacation choice for fans is their all-inclusive feel.

When you take a Disney Cruise Line vacation, you will pay the total cost of your trip before you even set foot on the ship. That means that your dining experiences (aside from specialty dining), stateroom, and activities are all included in the cost of the cruise. So if you want to go on a Disney Cruise Line vacation for only the base price, you could board the ship and not pay a single dollar for extra experiences for the duration of your vacation. Sounds great, right? We think so too, but we also know that there is one very important thing that guests may forget to account for in the cost of their cruise: tipping.

That’s right. Gratuities are not included in your Disney Cruise Line vacation. Whether or not you book extra experiences not included in the cruise, it is still customary to provide gratuity to each of the Cast Members serving you during your vacation. And as of January 19, 2019, Disney Cruise Line has increased their recommended base gratuity for select positions, encouraging guests to tip even more than they were expected to before. If this is confusing, don’t worry. We’ve broken down the best tips for tipping aboard Disney Cruise Line so you can remember when you are expected to tip and when it’s okay not to.

Who you are expected to tip

You are expected to tip your Dining Room serving team that rotates with you to each dining location for dinner every night of your cruise, as well as your Stateroom Host or Hostess. You are also expected to tip the Dining Manager, your servers at Palo or Remy (should you choose to dine there), as well as Room Service, if you order it.

Disney’s recommended gratuity amount per guest, per cruise:

Dining Room Server

  • 3-night cruise: $13.50
  • 4-night cruise: $18
  • 7-night cruise: $31.50

Dining Room Assistant Server

  • 3-night: $10.50
  • 4-night: $14
  • 7-night: $24.50

Dining Room Head Server

  • 3-night: $3
  • 4-night: $4
  • 7-night: $7

Stateroom Host/Hostess

  • 3-night: $13.50
  • 4-night: $18
  • 7-night: $31.50

Dining Manager, Room Service, and Palo/Remy servers: Tip at your discretion, but generally no less than 18%. If you utilize Senses Spa & Salon services, an 18% gratuity is automatically applied to your bill. Additionally, a 15% gratuity is automatically added to all bar, beverage, wine, and deck service tabs. Keep this in mind if you plan to take advantage of amenities like these that are not included in the base price of your Disney Cruise Line vacation.

Who you are not expected to tip

You are not expected to provide gratuity to any of the babysitting or Kids Club services that your family may utilize throughout the ship. It is also optional to tip Port Adventures, as gratuity is not included in the price of Port Adventures.

When you are expected to tip

You can pay gratuity in advance by contacting Disney Cruise Line no later than three days before your cruise begins. You can also pay by automatically having the gratuity added to your onboard account prior to disembarking the ship. You can also change the amount of gratuity you pay or pay in cash at anytime during your cruise by visiting the Guest Services desk.

On Disney Cruise Line, gratuities are automatically added to your onboard account each day and are distributed among the dining staff, stateroom hosts/hostesses, and other crew members who provide services during your voyage. It’s important to note that although the gratuity is automatically added, you have the flexibility to make adjustments if you feel the service exceeded or fell short of expectations. Additionally, it’s customary to provide additional tips to crew members who offer exceptional service beyond their regular duties.

Tipping is a vital source of income for the crew members, as their base salaries tend to be lower due to the gratuity-based system. By tipping generously, you are directly supporting the hardworking individuals who strive to make your Disney cruise experience magical.

Now that you have a general understanding of why tipping is important on a Disney cruise, let’s dive into the specific guidelines for tipping the various categories of crew members you will encounter during your voyage. From dining staff to stateroom hosts/hostesses, bartenders and servers, spa and salon services, and more, we’ll cover it all to ensure that you are well-informed and prepared to show your appreciation in the right way.

Tipping Guidelines for Dining Staff

The dining staff on a Disney cruise work tirelessly to create a memorable and enjoyable dining experience for guests. From the waitstaff who take your orders to the head servers who oversee the entire dining operation, these individuals play a crucial role in ensuring your meals are exceptional.

Disney Cruise Line recommends a gratuity amount of $4 per person, per night for the dining staff. This includes your head server, server, and assistant server. For a 7-night cruise, this would amount to $28 per person. However, tipping is always discretionary, and you can adjust the amount based on the level of service you receive.

If the dining staff exceeds your expectations, it is customary to provide additional tips as a token of appreciation. This can be done either in cash or by adding an extra gratuity to your onboard account.

In addition to the standard gratuity for the dining staff, it is worth noting that Disney Cruise Line has a unique rotational dining system. This means that each night, you will dine in a different restaurant with the same servers. This creates a personalized and familiar experience as the servers get to know your preferences and cater to your needs. If you feel that your dining staff has gone above and beyond in providing exceptional service throughout your cruise, consider giving an additional tip to show your gratitude.

Remember, tipping is a way to express your appreciation and acknowledge the hard work of the dining staff. By tipping generously, you are ensuring that the exceptional service you receive continues to be a hallmark of Disney cruises.

Tipping Guidelines for Stateroom Hosts/Hostesses

Stateroom hosts and hostesses on a Disney cruise play a vital role in ensuring your stateroom is a comfortable and inviting retreat throughout your voyage. They go above and beyond to keep your accommodations clean, tidy, and stocked with various amenities.

Disney Cruise Line recommends a gratuity amount of $4 per person, per night for the stateroom hosts/hostesses. For a 7-night cruise, this would amount to $28 per person. However, tipping is discretionary, and you have the flexibility to adjust the amount based on the level of service you receive.

Stateroom hosts/hostesses not only take care of your room but also add a touch of Disney magic by creating delightful towel animals and leaving personalized notes or surprises for guests. Their attention to detail and dedication to creating a welcoming atmosphere in your stateroom should be recognized and appreciated.

If your stateroom host or hostess goes above and beyond in providing exceptional service, it is customary to provide additional tips as a thank-you gesture. This can be done in cash or by adding an extra gratuity to your onboard account. It’s important to remember that these individuals work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure your comfort, so expressing your gratitude through tipping is a thoughtful gesture.

By tipping stateroom hosts/hostesses generously, you are acknowledging their efforts and contributing to the positive working environment on the ship. Your generosity not only shows appreciation but also helps motivate them to continue providing exceptional service to all guests.

Tipping Guidelines for Bartenders and Servers

When it comes to enjoying beverages and dining on a Disney cruise, the bartenders and servers play a crucial role in creating a memorable experience. Whether you’re sipping a refreshing cocktail by the pool or indulging in a gourmet meal at one of the onboard restaurants, these individuals work diligently to ensure your satisfaction.

For bartenders and servers on a Disney cruise, the recommended gratuity amount is $4 per person, per night. This amount covers the services provided at bars and lounges throughout the ship, as well as in the main dining rooms and specialty restaurants. A 7-night cruise would amount to $28 per person, but you have the discretion to adjust the gratuity based on the level of service you receive.

It’s important to note that gratuities for bartenders and servers are typically pooled together and shared among the entire team. This ensures that the hard work and dedication of all staff members are recognized and rewarded.

In addition to the recommended gratuity, it is customary to offer individual tips to bartenders and servers who go above and beyond in providing exceptional service. Whether it’s remembering your favorite drink or offering personalized recommendations, these gestures can make a difference in your cruise experience. Consider providing additional tips in cash or by adding an extra gratuity to your onboard account to show your appreciation.

Remember, the bartenders and servers onboard work long hours to cater to your beverage and dining needs. By tipping generously, you are not only expressing your gratitude but also supporting the hardworking individuals who contribute to the overall enjoyment of your cruise.

So, whether it’s raising a glass to a fantastic vacation or savoring a delectable meal, be sure to show your appreciation to the bartenders and servers who enhance your Disney cruise experience.

Tipping Guidelines for Spa and Salon Services

A Disney cruise offers the perfect opportunity to indulge in some well-deserved pampering at the onboard spa and salon. From rejuvenating massages to luxurious facials and expert hairstyling, the spa and salon staff are dedicated to ensuring your relaxation and beautification needs are met.

When it comes to tipping for spa and salon services, Disney Cruise Line suggests a gratuity of 18-20% of the total service cost. This gratuity is typically added automatically to your bill, similar to land-based spas and salons. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check with the staff to ensure you understand the tipping process.

If you receive exceptional service or would like to show additional appreciation, it is customary to provide additional tips on top of the automatic gratuity. This can be done in cash directly to the service provider or by adding an extra amount to your onboard account.

Additionally, some guests prefer to give a separate tip to the spa and salon staff at the end of their cruise as a token of gratitude for the wonderful services received throughout their voyage. This gesture is optional but greatly appreciated by the hardworking individuals who strive to create a blissful experience for you.

Remember that the spa and salon staff work diligently to ensure your relaxation and beauty needs are met, so tipping them generously is a way to acknowledge their dedication and expertise.

By tipping for spa and salon services, you are not only expressing your gratitude but also contributing to the overall culture of appreciation onboard the ship. Your generosity goes a long way in motivating the staff to provide exceptional services to all guests.

So sit back, relax, and indulge in the rejuvenating treatments and expert styling offered at the spa and salon. And don’t forget to show your appreciation through tipping for the outstanding services you receive.

Tipping Guidelines for Other Services

While dining, stateroom hosts/hostesses, bartenders, and spa and salon services are the main areas where tipping is customary on a Disney cruise, there are a few other services where tipping may be appropriate as well.

One such service is room service. If you choose to have meals or snacks delivered to your stateroom, it’s customary to tip the individual delivering the food. You can base the tip amount on the total cost of the order and the level of service provided.

Another service where tipping may be appropriate is for the Youth Counselors at the onboard children’s and teens’ clubs. These dedicated individuals create engaging and fun experiences for younger guests. If you feel that your child had a great experience and the Youth Counselors went above and beyond, it is customary to tip them as a gesture of appreciation.

Additionally, if you make use of onboard concierge services, such as booking shore excursions or making special arrangements, it’s customary to tip the concierge staff. The amount can be based on the level of service provided and the complexity of your requests.

It’s worth noting that while some onboard services have recommended gratuity amounts, tipping for these other services is typically discretionary. You have the flexibility to assess the service received and determine an appropriate amount to tip.

When providing additional tips for these other services, you can do so in cash or by adding an extra gratuity to your onboard account. Remember to use your judgment and consider the exceptional service provided when deciding on the tip amount.

By tipping for these additional services, you are acknowledging the dedicated efforts of the crew members who go above and beyond to make your Disney cruise experience special. Your generosity is a way to show your gratitude for their exceptional service and ensures that the positive interactions continue for all guests.

So, as you enjoy the various services offered on a Disney cruise, keep in mind these tipping guidelines for other services and use them to express your appreciation to the hardworking crew members who make your vacation truly magical.

How to Handle Tipping on a Disney Cruise

While tipping on a Disney cruise is essential to acknowledge the exceptional service provided by the crew members, it’s equally important to handle the tipping process smoothly and without stress. Here are some tips to help you navigate tipping on your Disney cruise:

  • Evaluate the service: Take note of the level of service you receive throughout your cruise. Consider factors such as attentiveness, friendliness, and going above and beyond the expected duties. This will help you in determining the appropriate amount to tip.
  • Be familiar with the guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the recommended gratuity amounts provided by Disney Cruise Line. These guidelines can serve as a starting point for your tipping decisions, but remember, they are not set in stone, and you have the flexibility to adjust the amounts based on your experience.
  • Carry cash: While gratuities are typically added to your onboard account, it’s a good idea to carry some cash for additional tips or to provide cash tips for specific services like room service or bartenders. Cash tips can be more personal and appreciated by the crew members.
  • Take note of exceptional service: If you receive exceptional service from any crew member, whether it’s your dining server, stateroom host, or spa therapist, consider providing an additional tip as a token of your appreciation. This gesture can make a meaningful impact and show your gratitude for their outstanding efforts.
  • Handle tipping discreetly: When providing additional tips, especially in cash, it’s best to do so discreetly and directly to the crew member. If you prefer to add an additional gratuity to your onboard account, you can inquire at Guest Services or the designated location on the ship.
  • Plan your budget: Factor in tipping as part of your overall budget for the cruise. This will help ensure that you have enough funds allocated for gratuities during your voyage.
  • Express your appreciation verbally: In addition to tipping, don’t forget to express your gratitude verbally as well. A simple thank you and kind words can go a long way in showing your appreciation for the exceptional service you receive.

Remember, tipping is a way to acknowledge and reward the hard work and dedication of the crew members who make your Disney cruise experience extraordinary. By handling tipping with thoughtfulness and generosity, you contribute to the positive working environment onboard and ensure that the high standards of service continue for all guests.

So, immerse yourself in the magic of Disney, enjoy the exceptional service provided by the crew members, and express your gratitude through tipping in a way that makes your cruise experience even more memorable.

As you bring your Disney cruise to a close, it’s important to reflect on the exceptional service provided by the hardworking crew members who made your voyage unforgettable. Tipping is a vital aspect of showing your appreciation and acknowledging their dedication.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ve explored the various tipping guidelines for dining staff, stateroom hosts/hostesses, bartenders and servers, spa and salon services, and other services. We’ve also discussed how to handle tipping smoothly and gracefully during your Disney cruise.

Remember, tipping is discretionary, and while there are recommended gratuity amounts, you have the flexibility to adjust based on the service received. By tipping generously and expressing gratitude, you contribute to the positive working environment onboard, motivating the crew members to continue delivering exceptional service to all guests.

From the magical dining experiences to the impeccable stateroom service, the delightful spa treatments to the expertly crafted beverages, every aspect of your Disney cruise is made possible by the dedicated crew members. Tipping is your opportunity to say “thank you” and show your appreciation for their unwavering commitment to making your vacation truly magical.

So, as you disembark from your Disney cruise, remember to handle tipping with thoughtfulness and generosity. Your gestures of appreciation, both through monetary tips and heartfelt gratitude, go a long way in making a positive impact on the crew members who strive to create unforgettable experiences for guests like you.

As you bid farewell to the enchanting world of Disney cruises, take a moment to reflect on the memories created, the incredible service received, and the joy that filled every moment of your voyage. And as you do, know that your tipping has played a part in recognizing and rewarding the dedicated crew members who made it all possible.

This is our first cruise, Disney or otherwise. I know my account will have a final charge on it for a gratuity percentage which will be distributed among the various cast members. Where/who do you normally tip in cash as you proceed throughout the cruise? TIA

We just use cash to tip port baggage handlers, tour guides, room service, and to add extra to the tip envelopes. The tip added to your account is $14.50/passenger/night and is broken down like this: $4.75: Stateroom Host $4.75: Dining Room Server $3.75: Assistant Dining Room Server $1.25: Dining Room Head Server Bar tabs and spa have an auto 18% gratuity added and you can add more when you sign the slip,no cash needed. We don't tip anyone else. The theory is that everyone is tipping their servers so anyone serving you through the day is covered as they work different venues during the day, but you see your staff at night.

Thanks for asking this as I've been wondering as well. My understanding is that people typically tip for room service? How much usually? Is their a guideline (e.g. percentage) on tipping for excursions? On an Alaskan cruise those excursions are very pricey!

Earning my ears.

In addition to the normal gratuities and a little more for great service, we typically take a few boxes of girl scout cookies for the room attendants. All of the room attendants we've had were from foreign countries, so they really enjoy them and share with fellow crew members.

What about the waiter at a sit down lunch? Is that covered by the server tips or should it be cash?

I like to carry a stack of $2 bills for cash tips, both for room service and excursion guides/drivers. They often get fun reactions.

Traveling on cc points said: Thanks for asking. Cruise tipping seems super confusing to me too. From reading these threads it seems like people are tipping 30% to 40% for certain things. (Which seems a bit excessive) 18% is added to added to most places like Palo, spa services, alcohol purchases ect.. but people are adding an additional amount because the tips are pooled and the server isn’t really getting the tip. I was reading the Palo thread the other day and people were saying to tip at least and additional $10 per person on top of the 18% that is automatically added because the staff was pointing out that they don’t get the tip. If we ever decide to take a Disney cruise , I will definitely have to do some more research on this because I just don’t get it. Click to expand...

😆

We always add an extra tip on drinks but we never use cash. I just add a small amount to the chit - either $1-2 per drink or round up the bill. If we increase the gratuity for the four standard positions, I always go to Guest Services to add that so that I don't have to worry about whether or not I'll actually see them to give them the tip envelope. We always add to the chit at Palo and have done for the spa - again we never use cash. I think the only tips where you might want cash is room service, porters, tour guides.

Room service - we often only order items that are already included in the cruise fare so if we order coffee alone in the morning we might tip $2, similar if ordering a snack. If ordering more of a meal - like a lunch to our balcony/room then we usually tip at least $5 or even more depending on how much food is ordered. Porters - generally speaking about $2 per checked bag Bars- no additional tip beyond the 18% already added Palo - have never been will be going for first time next sailing and I can imagine that if 18% is already added, there may be very little more I would add. I understand DCL splits it but it is something I can complain to DCL about but I don’t feel I need to make it up to the server with their own 15-20% extra. If everything is excellent at Palo - food, service etc then I can tip a little more to get Into thst 20-25% range. But it would have to be excellent service, taste of food and food temperature etc. Room stewards - usually standard tip. We are 4 adults and we don’t make a huge mess and keep things generally tidy. Servers- we start with the standard and adjust from there. Usually we would only adjust upwards but did have one sailing where the service was so bad on the Wish they actually had to lower tips. Apparently I wasn’t the only one as GS said most servers need retraining based on customer feedback on our sailing. We adjust based on service time, fast or slow, food quality and temperature (we have had servers tell us our meal is delayed because they sent it back for a fresh hot one- which I appreciate the server doing), and servers ability to meet our vegetarian dietary needs - after 10 cruises we learned thst some are a lot better at doing this than others. Other servers: on rare occasion have given a cash tip to someone at breakfast or lunch for something exceptional they did for us. I think that’s it. We don’t do concierge so don’t have to tip thst crew

Disneyland - the original since 1955.

I asked some CMs on board recently about preference for USD cash vs cabin credit for gratuities. I was told if CM is from US, either is OK, but for those from other countries, cabin credit is preferred as it is easiest for those who send their $$ back home.

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point: A complete guide to Disney Cruise Line’s private beach destination

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

If you're wondering what a Disney Cruise Line private beach destination is like, you might imagine it's Disney World in a tropical atmosphere. However, I can assure you that Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point isn't like the parks at all — it's different in all the right ways.

For starters, it's not crowded, and it offers beaches instead of amusement rides. Although you'll share the beach with others, you won't wait in sometimes hourslong lines for a lounge chair. Instead of retail shops and restaurants urging parents and other visitors to spend, spend, spend, there are only a couple of shops, and all eateries are free of charge, which reduces temptation.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Lookout Cay is also unspoiled and happily lacks the commercial feel of other cruise line private islands. Through a partnership with the Bahamian government, Disney Cruise Line created an oasis that's a nod to the culture, food and art of the Bahamas. It features local seafood, native flora, art classes, sculptures by local artists, Disney music with an island twist and Junkanoo dance celebrations. It also houses a nature trail that leads to a lighthouse overlooking the sea, which is how Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point received part of its name.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

However, it does feel a little like it's still growing into its ears. When it received its first ship call, signage was still being installed, and bicycles weren't yet available to rent for use on its bike paths. There was also a marked lack of shade because most of the native flora Disney planted hasn't yet matured to provide it — something that will take years.

Want to know what else to expect during a visit to Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point? Here's a rundown of all the beachy business.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Where is Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point?

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is on the southeastern tip of the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Disney Cruise Line purchased 900 acres of land for the purpose of creating its own private beach destination there but developed less than 16% of the overall parcel.

The line also donated 190 acres back to the Bahamian government, including the southernmost point and a significant amount of beachfront property.

Which cruise ships go there?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Disney Lookout Cay is exclusive to passengers who sail on Disney Cruise Line's ships, and all of the line's vessels are able to call there. At press time, voyages visiting Lookout Cay through 2024 included three- to six-night sailings, mostly on Disney Magic . Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are also scheduled to make a handful of stops there.

How do you get to and around Disney Lookout Cay?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Although Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point has a pier for its ships to dock, vessels tie up a half-mile from the destination entrance in an effort to avoid harming the coral reefs that grow closer to shore. Unfortunately, that means passengers face a 10- to 15-minute walk in the Bahamian sun with no shade.

A limited number of complimentary wagons are available near the pier entrance for passengers with small children to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis.

Passengers who can't make the trek on their own can request golf cart assistance by contacting guest services on the ship. Due to the width of the pier, a more robust shuttle service cannot be offered for everyone. It's surprising that the cruise line didn't anticipate this need, particularly since it caters so heavily to families with young children.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

From the entrance to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, visitors will take a free shuttle from the Mabrika Cove area to the Goombay area, where most of the action happens. The latter is home to the beaches, restaurants, buffets, entertainment and cultural venues that the destination offers.

Shuttles depart in pairs on a regular cadence, and since there's only one route with two stops — one at the beginning and one at the end — it's an easier system to navigate than the one on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay .

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Be prepared for the ride to take about 15 minutes in each direction, and note that there could be waits at peak times. Shade is provided in the form of a long pavilion at each of the two shuttle stations. During the trip, you'll hear a recording that features a cast of sea creature characters who aim to educate riders about the history of the island, what it offers, and the types of plants and animals that call the island home.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

When you arrive at the Goombay Cultural Center tram stop, wagons and strollers are provided for passengers with children to use on a complimentary first-come, first-served basis.

A series of gorgeous boardwalks connect points of interest in the Goombay area. Instead of providing straight paths, they're largely winding. That makes them aesthetically pleasing but also frustrating because their layout forces you to walk longer than necessary when moving from place to place. Due to a lack of signage, which the line says it's working on, it can also be difficult to find your way between locations.

After you take the tram back to the Mabrika Cove area at the end of the day, you'll have to pass through a security checkpoint in order to begin the long walk back to the ship.

What are the Lookout Cay beaches?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The Goombay section of the destination is divided into two tiers. The upper tier has bars, restaurants, bathrooms and attractions. It also has small sandy areas with loungers and umbrellas. However, to access the ocean and beaches at Disney Lookout Cay, cruisers must venture to the lower tier via stairs or one of five accessible ramps, which descend a short distance down the dunes that separate the tiers.

Instead of several separate beaches, Lookout Cay has one long white-sand stretch that encompasses two areas: Family Beach, which is for everyone, and Serenity Bay Beach, which is for cruisers 18 and older only.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The beaches flow into one another with no visible divider. However, crew members will direct families with children to the proper beach if necessary.

One other beach area — at Mabrika Cove, near the entrance to Lookout Cay — is only accessible if you rent one of the family cabanas there. (See below.)

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Beachgoers who enjoy the two main beaches can take advantage of bars and buffets that are a short walk away. Cruisers accessing the Mabrika Cove beach via cabana rental have their own dedicated dining pavilion in that area. (See below.)

disney cruise tipping guidelines

All beaches have complimentary access to loungers, umbrellas and nearby bathrooms. Lifeguards are stationed both on land and on personal watercraft that scan all of the beach areas. Life jackets for children and adults also are available for complimentary use.

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point has no pools.

A towel station is near the Mabrika Cove tram stop, so you don't need to bring your own from the ship.

A limited number of first-come, first-served beach wheelchairs will soon be available for complimentary passenger use.

What are the best things to do at Disney Lookout Cay?

For families.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Families looking for more than just a day lazing on the beach can head to Rush Out Gush Out, Disney Lookout Cay's colorful, family-friendly water play area. It features water sprayers and a couple of small tube slides for kids.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

A separate splash area for kids is Sebastian's Cove, where young children who are signed up for the cruise line's kids club activities can play under the supervision of youth club staff. Parents can check their kids in during set hours to enjoy some adults-only time while the little ones splash among fountains adorned with sea characters a la "The Little Mermaid."

disney cruise tipping guidelines

For interactive fun and games, check out the "Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash," which is, ironically and mercifully, held in the shade of the Play-Play Pavilion — a large, covered, open-air structure used for family activities. The bash happens twice a day and involves ring toss and water games for kids, hosted by Chip, Dale, Goofy and Pluto. Other kid-friendly activities — Hula-Hoops, soccer, etc. — happen throughout the day, too.

Next door, you can also check out Triton's Trumpet Stage, where various family-friendly activities and music performances take place. During my visit, artists were there making sand sculptures.

For beach bums

disney cruise tipping guidelines

This one is easy. Simply plant yourself at one of the free umbrella loungers along any of the beaches, and enjoy. For a kid-free experience, head left just past the Goombay area's information station and make your way to the far end of the beach, where you'll find Serenity Bay.

If you have the budget and you can book one before they sell out, renting a private cabana is another great way to enjoy the beach — but with extra amenities. (See below.)

For culture vultures

disney cruise tipping guidelines

If you're eager to learn more about the Bahamas' beautiful culture, visit the Goombay Cultural Center in the heart of the Goombay area of Disney Lookout Cay.

In addition to admiring the local art pieces displayed, you can take part in art classes taught by locals and learn a bit about the islands' history.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

It's also the place to view "Rush! A Junkanoo Celebration" — a vibrant and energetic performance by local Junkanoo dancers. It features elaborate, brilliantly colored costumes and visits from Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy.

For active visitors

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Passengers who just can't sit still can rent bicycles at the Rocky Point rental stand near the Goombay Cultural Center tram stop ($15 per person for the whole day). Pedal along a series of bike paths that wind throughout the destination. (During my visit, the trails weren't yet ready and, therefore, weren't open to visitors.)

If counting steps is more your thing, you won't want to miss a walk along the Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point nature trail. It takes between 10 and 15 minutes each way to walk the sandy but firm path to see the old lighthouse, from which the destination's name was derived. It's a great spot for photos, and along the way, you're sure to spot some of the island's native plants and maybe an animal or two. You can walk it on your own or book a guided tour.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Given the terrain, I don't recommend wearing flip-flops for the walk. Additionally, because the trail is hard-packed, it's largely wheelchair accessible. However, the route has some mild inclines and areas where the terrain might be a little looser or rougher. Anyone using a mobility aid should proceed with caution and discretion.

Want some watery fun while you burn calories? Rent snorkeling gear (a mask with a snorkel, a life vest and fins) for $38 per person for the day. You can pick up the gear at the Flippers & Fins stand, about halfway between Family Beach and Serenity Bay Beach.

Like Castaway Cay, Lookout Cay will eventually host a 5K run for passengers wishing to take part while they're in port. At press time, information about the specific route was not yet available.

If you'd like to pay for an active excursion, options abound, including biking, kayaking and snorkeling. (See below.)

For eco-conscious guests

disney cruise tipping guidelines

If you're interested in the local environment, check out the Discovery Trail, part of the nature trail experience. A series of posted signs throughout the destination offer QR codes that provide information about native plants and animals, the island's geography, and more.

Several eco-tours are offered among the list of shore excursions that take passengers out of the immediate Lookout Cay area and into the rest of Eleuthera. (See below.)

Can I meet Disney characters at Lookout Cay?

Yes, opportunities abound to meet and take photos with Disney characters. Check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App for scheduled appearances.

You can also catch a glimpse of Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy during "Rush! A Junkanoo Celebration" at the Goombay Cultural Center. Plus, Chip, Dale, Goofy and Pluto lead the "Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash," held at the Play-Play Pavilion.

What are the excursions at Lookout Cay?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

What's nice about Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is that it's not the entirety of the island. Unlike Castaway Cay — which is its own island, entirely operated by Disney Cruise Line — Lookout Cay is a small portion of a larger island on which people live, work and go about their daily lives. Because of that, Disney is able to offer excursions that venture beyond the cruise line's designed areas.

During my visit, excursions listed on the DCL app included:

  • Bahama Bank Boat Escape: A two-hour, 15-minute tour for $109 (ages 10 and older) or $79 (ages 8-9)
  • Banana Boat: A 45-minute tour for $59 (ages 10 and older) or $49 (ages 8-9)
  • Bike and Kayak at Disney Lookout Cay: A two-hour, 15-minute tour for $99 (ages 10-80) or $89 (ages 4-9)
  • Boiling Hole Reef Snorkel: A three-hour, 15-minute tour for $109 (ages 10 and older) or $79 (ages 8-9)
  • E-Bike, Sand, Snorkel and History: A two-hour, 15-minute tour for $139 (ages 16-75)
  • Historical Nature and Buggy Tour (two people) : A one-hour, 45-minute tour for $239 (ages 12 and older)
  • Historical Nature and Buggy tour (four people): A one-hour, 45-minute tour for $399 (ages 12 and older)
  • Nature Walk and Coral Nursery: A two-hour, 15-minute tour for $59 (ages 10 and older) or $49 (ages 8-9)
  • Pirates of Eleuthera: A two-hour, 15-minute tour for $79 (ages 10 and older), $69 (ages 3-9) or free (ages 2-3)
  • Private Historical Cultural Tour (in SUV): A four-hour, 15-minute tour for $799 (ages 18 and older)
  • Snorkel by Boat: A two-hour, 45-minute tour for $109 (ages 10 and older) or $89 (ages 5-9)
  • South Eleuthera Eco and Cultural Tour: A three-hour, 45-minute tour for $149 (ages 10 and older), $119 (ages 4-9) or free (ages 2-3)
  • South Eleuthera Eco and Historical Tour: A three-hour, 45-minute tour for $119 (ages 10 and older), $79 (ages 4-9) or free (ages 2-3)
  • Tropical Reef Safari Snorkel: A two-hour, 15-minute tour for $109 (ages 10 and older) or $79 (ages 8-9)

You can book excursions prior to sailing, on board at your ship's Port Adventures desk, via the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App or upon arrival at Lookout Cay. Tours depart from either the Turbot Berth stand at Mabrika Cove, just inside the entrance to Lookout Cay, or The Gathering Tree to the left of the information center near the Goombay Cultural Center tram stop.

Does Disney Lookout Cay offer cabanas to rent?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Disney Lookout Cay has two cabana sections: Mabrika Cove Cabanas, designated for families, and Serenity Bay Cabanas, designated for adults only.

All cabanas book up quickly on a first-come, first-served basis. They're one price for the entire day for a set number of people, depending on the size. However, you can add more people (up to a maximum number, depending on cabana type) for an additional fee (per person). (See below for details.)

Accessible cabanas are available. Passengers can contact Disney Cruise Line's special services at 407-566-3602 to inquire about booking those.

Mabrika Cove Cabanas

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Oddly, the family cabanas are in Mabrika Cove, as the name suggests, which means they're a 15-minute tram ride away from the main entertainment location – something that doesn't seem particularly family-friendly.

Fortunately, families don't have to make the journey to grab a bite to eat. In addition to snacks provided in the cabanas, lunch is served at a dedicated dining pavilion nearby. Visitors can dine at tables there or take food back to their cabanas.

Cabanas for families come in two sizes. Family Cabanas are the smaller of the two and can hold up to six people for $963. The second, Grand Family Cabanas, are a little larger and can accommodate up to 10 people for $1,375. Additional people can join for $56 each. In total, 20 cabanas are available: four Grand Family Cabanas and 16 Family Cabanas.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Cabanas are not air-conditioned. They consist of three walls (one with counter space and a minifridge stocked with bottled water and soda), a main entrance and slatted windows that push out to open. A fourth partial wall is mostly open-air and leads out onto the attached wooden deck, where visitors can take advantage of padded loungers and a table with chairs.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Inside, a couple of chairs and coffee tables make for pleasant and comfortable indoor seating. Passengers wishing to venture to the beach can do so via a set of stairs that leads down from the deck. Waiting in the sand are loungers, upright chairs and an umbrella (which doesn't provide nearly enough shade for all of the chairs).

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Larger cabanas include more deck space, additional outdoor loungers and an indoor dining room with a large, long table and chairs.

Family cabanas also include freshwater outdoor showers for easy sand removal, food (snacks and lunch) and nonalcoholic beverages, sand toys, sunscreen, beach towels, and a safe for use during the day. Snorkeling equipment is also included upon request. Cabanas do not have private restrooms, but a public restroom facility is nearby.

Serenity Bay Cabanas

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Exclusively for guests 18 and older, the Serenity Bay adults-only cabanas are about as far from the family cabanas as you can be on the developed part of the Disney property.

They consist of two types: Serenity Bay Cabanas, which hold up to four people for $523, and Serenity Bay Grand Cabanas, which can accommodate up to 10 people for $963. Additional people can be accommodated for $56 each. Six cabanas make up the total inventory, with two of them in the Grand Cabana category.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Layouts and amenities are similar to those of the Mabrika Cove Cabanas, and they are also not air-conditioned, nor do they offer private bathrooms. Public ones are in the vicinity, however.

Is food included at Disney Lookout Cay?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

You bet. Lookout Cay has two main (and free) buffet areas: True-True BBQ and True-True Too BBQ. True-True is found between the information booth and the family beach, and True-True Too is between the information booth and Serenity Bay.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Both serve fish (mahi-mahi and salmon), chicken and seafood rice bowls, barbecue ribs, rotisserie chicken, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, Impossible Burgers, and crispy chicken sandwiches. Sides include couscous salad, coleslaw, baked beans, grilled broccoli, corn on the cob, baked plantains and sweet potato fries.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Unfortunately, the food areas have a fly problem. The insects buzz all around the serving areas and often land on the food items. The line has taken steps to curb the issue, including adding fans to food service counters and tables in the seating areas.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Speaking of seating, True-True has five covered pavilions with tables, and True-True Too has four. At peak times, it can be difficult to find a spot.

Each location has a drink kiosk area that offers free self-serve water, soft drinks and soft ice cream.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Additionally, Serenity Bay has its own complimentary buffet, Serenity Bay BBQ, which serves the same items as True-True and True-True Too. It also has its own shaded seating areas and a stand with drinks and ice cream. The nearby Blue Hole Bar is the place to grab an alcoholic beverage.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The buffets are the only places at Lookout Cay that serve food, and they do so between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. That means if you're hungry or need a snack earlier or later, you're out of luck. Be sure to eat a good breakfast before you disembark, and pack your own nibbles if you think you might be peckish in the late afternoon.

Are there bars at Lookout Cay?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Of course! Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point has four bars, a smoothie stand and a coffee kiosk. All are in the Goombay area, with the exception of the coffee stand, which is at Mabrika Cove.

The Blue Hole Bar serves the Serenity Bay adults-only area, and it's the bar with the easiest access from the beach. The next closest one to the beach is at the totally opposite end, at the end of the family beach. Halfway between the two are the Watering Hole Bar, near True-True BBQ, and the Bow & Ribbon Bar, which is near True-True Too BBQ.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The menus include Volley, Truly and White Claw seltzers; Kalik and Sands beers; a selection of flavored cold-brew coffees; and cocktails like a black cherry pina colada, Junkanoo Juice (rum, banana, lime, pineapple and passion orange guava) and a Bahama Sling (peach rum, Cointreau, lime, orgeat and bitters).

The menu also features specials: Eleuthera Euphoria (rum, pineapple and Dole Whip pineapple) and Butterfly Switcha (lemonade, jasmine green tea and a tastebud enhancer).

You can also purchase souvenir pineapple cups and tumblers at the bars for $21 each.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Sandsational Smoothies, the smoothie stand near the Watering Hole Bar, offers nonalcoholic frozen drinks. (Try the Tropical Teaser: vanilla ice cream, mango, pineapple and tropical Pop Rocks.) Nonalcoholic specialty drinks include flavored iced tea and watermelon limeade.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The coffee stand Mangroves & Go is just beyond the entrance to Lookout Cay. It's ideal for grabbing a morning cup of joe to start your day ashore. Choose from double and single shots of espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, iced coffee and cold brew, as well as spiked coffee beverages and specialty island concoctions like the Junkanoo Latte — a blend of cold brew, vanilla and lavender.

Oddly, most bars and the smoothie stand are pretty far from the beach, meaning you'll have a bit of a trek to grab drinks. It can be an ordeal if you have to pack up the kids every time you head off in search of water or other hydration, which is crucial in the hot Bahamian sun.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The cruise line says it's working on adding water stations beyond the soda fountains found near the buffet areas. In the meantime, one rather pricey option beachgoers have is to purchase a cooler bag at Mabrika Cove. Each carries six bottles of either Dasani or Smartwater for $26 or $32.25, respectively.

Since Disney Cruise Line doesn't offer beverage packages, each drink is charged a la carte to your onboard account using your keycard.

Is there shopping at Disney Lookout Cay?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Is Mickey a mouse? Shopaholics can satisfy their retail therapy cravings at several outposts, including Disney T'ings and Treasures of Eleuthera, both in the heart of the Goombay Cultural Center area, near the tram stop of the same name.

The former offers Disney merchandise, which includes a variety of apparel bearing Bahamian-designed representations of popular characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy. You'll also find Lookout Cay Spirit Jerseys, T-shirts, hats, tumblers, Loungefly bags, beach blankets, photo frames, water bottles, magnets, holiday ornaments, Crocs and, of course, mouse ears.

The latter features handicrafts made by local artists. During my visit, the shop showcased paintings, prints, straw purses and totes with Disney characters hand embroidered on them.

Visitors wishing to have their hair braided can do so at the nearby Plaits & Pleats.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

For passengers who just can't wait until they arrive in the Goombay area — or those who waited until the last possible second before heading back to the ship — there's the First & Last Chance Stand. Found just past the entrance to Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point in Mabrika Cove, this small kiosk sells shirts, beach towels, sunscreen, pins, keychains and an assortment of other essentials and Disney-branded items.

What additional amenities will I find?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

As far as the basics go, plenty of bathrooms, trash cans and recycling bins are dotted throughout Disney Lookout Cay. Places for service animal relief are also designated throughout the area.

You'll find an information desk and a first aid center when you arrive at the Goombay Cultural Center tram stop.

Wi-Fi is available there. If you've purchased a package , you'll be able to access it but note that you'll likely lose connectivity on the tram ride between Mabrika Cove and Serenity Bay. You can also connect to cellular data if you have an international plan that covers the Bahamas. Otherwise, keep your phone on airplane mode .

If you walk to the far end of Family Beach, past the Play-Play Pavilion, you'll find the entrance to the nature trail. If you continue straight instead of turning to the left to enter the trail, you can follow the path from the nature trail to the Goombay Cultural Center tram stop. If you're making your way back to Mabrika Cove and don't want to deal with other passengers on the winding boardwalk, it provides a less chaotic route to hop on the shuttle.

Can you stay overnight at Disney Lookout Cay?

Although the island of Eleuthera is inhabited, passengers are not able to stay overnight at Lookout Cay. The private destination itself has no hotels or other sleeping accommodations that would allow for overnight guests.

What's the typical Lookout Cay weather like?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The weather in the Bahamas is generally pleasant and warm all year, with average temperatures in the high 70s in winter and the high 80s to low 90s in summer. Expect the most rain in June, August and September.

Hurricane season , which runs from June to November, can affect weather conditions, with the most activity generally seen between August and October.

Shade, sunscreen (preferably one that's reef-safe ) and hydration are key to avoiding the damaging effects of the sun. Be sure to drink plenty of water, reapply sunblock and seek shelter if necessary. Protective clothing, sunglasses and hats are also essentials.

Can I see a Disney Lookout Cay map?

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Passengers can request a paper copy of the Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point map at the information desk near the Goombay Cultural Center tram stop. Although it's available on the Disney Cruise Line app, it can be difficult to see on a tiny phone screen, especially in the bright sun.

Note that the map can also be cumbersome to read because each item is numbered instead of labeled, and you have to use a key to determine what's what.

Click here to view, download or print a larger PDF version of the map.

The Best Time To Take A Disney Cruise

I f your family loves Disney, a Disney cruise may be something that is on your mind. Although you won’t be experiencing any attractions or rides, you will enjoy Disney magic while experiencing the world outside of Walt Disney World. Wondering when is the best time to take a Disney cruise? Here is our guide to figuring out the best options for your family.

Disclosure: Over the years we have taken media cruises on the Disney Cruise Line, and have paid full price for many of our sailings. This post contains affiliate links (and an affiliate phone number), and if you click through or purchase through one of these links/numbers, I may be paid a commission.

When booking a Disney Cruise, I recommend booking with Get Away Today. Plus, when you mention Family Travel Magazine, you get an extra $25 in onboard credits! Give their agents a call at 877-510-2929.

When deciding the best time to take a Disney Cruise, you’ll need to look at a few factors. If you have older kids, you may be stuck with only just a few weeks of availability due to sports, work, and school commitments.

My high school/college kids are so busy that school vacations are the only times that we can travel for more than a weekend. These times are very fun to travel but are likely to be more expensive – including the airfare.

If your schedule is open, and you are looking for the best times to sail on a Caribbean/Bahamian itinerary, I’d recommend May. The weather is generally nice, it’s not one of the peak times, so prices and crowds aren’t too bad.

If you have younger children who aren’t in school yet, take advantage of that time. You also won’t have to worry about hurricane season at that point.

Pricing Considerations for Your Cruise

Pricing is one of the most important factors you should consider. As you’d expect, the peak times of the year, like holidays, spring break, and other school vacations, are when you’ll often see the highest prices.

Some discounts, for military and Florida residents, for instance, are not offered on every sailing. Flexibility in booking can allow you to save some money.

It’s not just the cruise price that you should look at. If you are flying into the port or staying either a night before or a night after your cruise, the flights and hotels may also be more expensive during school vacations and holidays. So you’ll have to weigh whether the extra cost is worth the convenience of traveling during this time.

Some families choose to combine their family cruise with a trip to the theme parks for a Disney land and sea vacation . Again, this is usually a more expensive trip during holidays and school breaks – for both the parks and the cruise line.

When booking, it’s always a good idea to book early. Disney Castaway Club members can often book early when the cruise fares and itineraries are first announced. That way, you will have your choice of stateroom categories and won’t be left with the more expensive rooms, especially if you are hoping for a more affordable room category. Interior staterooms and ocean view staterooms (porthole) can be cheaper options for your trip.

If you are already taking a cruise, making onboard bookings can save you money. Your next cruise can be booked before the end of your cruise.

You can book a placeholder if you aren’t sure what itinerary you want to experience next or don’t have your available dates handy. Keep in mind that some of those benefits may have blackout dates during holidays and special events.

Also look at the price including travel insurance. It’s always a good idea to have your vacation spending protected.

Travel insurance may also cover you if you have a medical emergency (but always check coverage) A good travel agent can help you find the best rates for your dates and may even offer onboard credit.

Crowds on Your Cruise

Like prices, crowd levels are often the highest during school vacations and holidays. Although you may only be able to travel during these busy times, it’s important to understand in advance that you’ll need to make your reservations as early as possible and arrive at the airport with plenty of time. On our last cruise, we had to fly on Christmas Day, and the airport was extremely crowded with many delays.

Once your reservation is booked, based on your Castaway Club level, you should also plan your shore excursions early. If you have an especially popular port adventure, it likely will be booked up during the busy sailings. Cabanas at Castaway Cay are especially difficult to book because the demand far exceeds the supply.

Special Events at Sea

Disney Cruise Line offers some special, themed sailings that can be so much fun. These special cruises include Halloween on the High Seas, Disney’s Very Merrytime Cruise , Marvel Day at Sea, Pixar Day at Sea, and Star Wars Day at Sea. During these sailings, you’ll experience things like a decorated cruise ship, themed shows, and special events.

Often, these sailings can be more expensive than cruises without a theme. So you’ll need to decide whether or not the special theme is worth it for your family. If you aren’t excited about the extra decor/entertainment, you may want to save money and opt for a standard cruise.

Weather/Hurricane Season

Weather is another factor in deciding the best time to take a Disney Cruise. If you are planning a Caribbean/Bahamian itinerary cruise, you’ll want to look at the average temperatures in the islands you’ll be visiting. These cruises are typically offered year-round, although the Bahamian temperatures tend to be cooler in the winter months.

I generally prefer the spring, summer, and fall months when cruising to the Bahamas. Even early December can be nice. Surprisingly, while the summer months are hot, they don’t feel too hot.

The southern Caribbean islands generally have warm temps year-round. It’s important to look at hurricane season, however. A tropical storm or hurricane can affect your sailing so you’ll want to keep this in mind if you decide to cruise in these months. My September sailing resulted in an extension of two extra days due to a hurricane in Florida.

Itineraries on the Disney Cruise Line

Some of the itineraries on the Disney Cruise Line are only offered at certain times of the year. Alaskan cruises , for example, are only offered during the late spring/summer months because of the cold weather the rest of the year.

Other limited sailings include Northern Europe and San Diego (but can vary by year). So, if you are looking to take one of those sailings, you’ll have limited options for timing.

Ages of Kids on the Disney Cruise Line

Instead of a time of year, you may be wondering what the best ages are to take a Disney Cruise with your kids. You won’t want to go when your kids are too young because they won’t be able to enjoy all of the activities and amenities.

I’d recommend waiting until your kids are old enough to enjoy the kids’ clubs. They are fantastic, and your kids will likely want to stay in the clubs for much of your time at sea. Although the regular youth clubs are open to kids 3 and up, my kids had fun in them once they were about 5 years old.

After that age, I think that any kid would enjoy sailing on the Disney Cruise Line. We recently went on a trip with our 17 and 19-year-olds, and they still have a great time sailing with Disney.

4. Two Disney Cruise Staterooms May Be A Better Deal Than One

If you have a party of 5 you really need to consider if one stateroom or two will be the better deal.

Disney cruises are one of the very few cruise lines which have staterooms that accommodate up to 5 guests.

disneycruiseverandahstateroom

However, these Disney cruise staterooms are very popular and tend to be pricey.

You should consider if 2 staterooms would be the better deal.

If you have young children you might want to think about choosing connecting staterooms on your Disney Cruise.

There are plenty of options available, particularly on the newer Disney Dream and Fantasy ships and of course the Disney Wish .

5. Book A Disney Cruise Onboard

This is one of the best Disney cruise tips to save money.

It will work once you are sailing on your first and any future Disney cruises.

The best deal is to book when you are onboard.

Here is a Guide to Tipping on a Disney Cruise to help you know what to expect.

Check-In For Your Disney Cruise Online

disneysandiego

Remember to check in online for your cruise as soon as you can.

9. Use Your Disney Cruise Personalizer

disneycruisemilitarydiscounts

Once you have completed your Disney Cruise online check-in you will have access to booking onboard events and cruise excursions on the Disney Cruise Personalizer.

The  time that you can check in depends upon whether you have cruised with Disney before, and if so, what level of Castaway Club member you are.

This can be anything between 75 and 123 days before your cruise.

Platinum members and Concierge guests get priority so you may find that some things are booked before you get the chance.

A classic illustration of this is the Cabanas on Castaway Cay .

There are limited numbers and are usually snagged by Concierge and Pearl guests at one minute past midnight on the day online check-in opens for them.

Castaway Cay Cabanas are the hottest ticket on a Disney cruise and are very difficult to get unless you are a Concierge or Pearl Castaway Cay guest.

10. You Must Prepare for Embarkation Before You Sail

letthemagicbegindessertmenu

Things have changed quite a bit since Covid – but Disney makes things as easy and as safe as possible for all Guests.

Disney Cruise Line DOES NOT Guests to be vaccinated or tested for COVID-19.

DCL does continue to strongly recommend that guests are vaccinated and that they test before embarking on a cruise ship.

Requirements can change so the best place to go for this information is always:

Disney Cruise Line Know Before You Go

11. Book Tickets Online for Character Greetings

disneycruisecharactergreeting

Most character greetings are just announced every day in your Personal Navigator and you get in line to see your favorites.

The Disney Princess Gathering is a separately ticketed event and you must have this to attend the meet and greet.

If you want to see your favorites your best chance is to get tickets online in the Cruise Personalizer.

If you don’t get them online go straight to Guest Services when you board to see if there are any still available.

Note that right now the Anna and Elsa Frozen Meet and Greet is not scheduled on any of the Disney Ships.

12. Book Special Dining Online

disneycruisedining

If you want to book one of the adult dining experiences you can book one experience in each restaurant online.

If you book for the first night at Remy or Palo you can now also book a second night online. Remy, in particular, gets booked up so always try and book in advance.

If there is nothing available, you can still try and book as soon as you get on your cruise.

The Navigator will tell you where the restaurant Cast Members are on the ship to help you make a reservation.

Wine tastings and other special events are now offered online as well. Make sure that you log into your Disney Cruise Personalizer as soon as you can so that you can book the events that you want.

Remember though that there are usually spaces still available on the ship.

So visit Guest Services as soon as you get on board.

13. Sign Up The Young Ones for The Kid’s Clubs

disneycruisebalconies

See that long line at the cruise port over in the corner? That is for the grown-ups who did not sign up their children online for the kid’s clubs.

You can save a lot of time waiting in line if you just fill out the simple form online.

Then you can skip the lines and go straight to the place where they will be given their wristbands.

Disney Cruise Ship Kids Clubs – What to Expect

14. Book Port Adventures in Advance

disneycruisecabo

You will be visiting some amazing ports so you will want to think about which Disney Port Adventures you want to book.

Your online Cruise Personalizer has details of them all. You can book before you sail.

We always suggest that you book excursions via Disney. You can book independently and you will probably save money.

However, if you book with Disney you can be sure that they have the Disney seal of approval. Most importantly if you are late back from a Disney Port Adventure the ship will wait for you.

If you go independently you could be waving goodbye to your floating home from the dock.

We have seen it happen.

Don’t let it be you.

D ISNEY CRUISE PACKING TIPS

15. disney cruise packing 101.

One of the great things about a cruise is that you are not restricted to how much luggage you can take on board.

If you are driving to the cruise port this makes things easy.

Take as much as you want!

However, if you are arriving by plane you will still have to navigate their increasingly ungenerous baggage allowances.

Things to Take on a Cruise: 50 Must-Have Items to Pack

16. Pack a Carry On

Your luggage will arrive in your Disney cruise stateroom sometime in the afternoon and early evening.

If there is anything that you need as soon as you board, make sure that you have packed it in a carry-on bag.

This should definitely include your cruise and identification documents, and any medication that you need.

I also tend to pack swimsuits.

It is also a great time to experience the Aqua Duck if you are on the Disney Fantasy or Dream. Or the AquaMouse on the Wish.

17. Prepare For the Unexpected

disneycruisesandiego

No one wants to talk about this subject, but here we go.

Seasickness.

It happens.

The Disney cruise ships are very stable, but sometimes you may not find it possible to get your sea legs.

We have sailed in very challenging seas but never encountered a problem.

However, just in case you will find our guide How Not To Get Sick on a Disney Cruise useful.

18. Tell Your Credit Card Company Your Plans

Unfortunately, credit card fraud is very common these days. So your credit card company will pick up on any unusual activity.

They can and often will stop your card if they detect anything strange.

My card was canceled when I tried to charge $10 in Grand Cayman!

Fortunately, I had a backup card.

For more details check out Things Not To Forget on Your Disney Cruise

19. Arriving at the Port

disneycruiseembarkation

If you are sailing from Port Canaveral here is a guide to getting to the Port from Orlando International Airport.

20. Arrive the Day Before Your Cruise

Sometimes flights are delayed. We strongly recommend that if you possibly can, make sure you arrive at least within easy driving distance to the port the day before.

There are plenty of hotels at each Disney cruise port including Port Canaveral.

If you ignore most of the rest of this article just listen to this Disney Cruise Tip as it is one that can make a huge difference.

Don’t leave things to chance and be stressed about making it on time to your cruise.

Nothing could be worse than not making it on time and watching the ship sail away into the sunset without you.

21. Get a Call from Mickey or Minnie

This is another great feature of your Cruise Personalizer. You can schedule a call with Mickey or Minnie! You can schedule the date, and time and choose if you want Minnie or Mickey.

It’s another way Disney cruise lines make things that bit extra special.

22. Download the Disney Cruise Navigator App

You can do this any time you want, but make sure you do it before you get on board.

On the cruise ship, it shows you what is happening every day.

Before you cruise it gives you a countdown of how many more days, hours and minutes there are before you board!

The Navigator App also lets you send texts free of charge to members of your stateroom and anyone else who authorizes you to do this.

This is so much better than the Wave Phones you get in each stateroom. Make sure that all family members get the App before they board.

If you have an iPhone then iMessage works on the ship.

23. There May Be a Disney Cruise Stateroom Upgrade

disneycruisestateroom

Want to upgrade your Disney cruise stateroom? You can always ask at check-in if there are any upgrades available.

Sometimes, but not always, you can get an upgrade at a reduced cost. It always pays to ask just in case! You can then decide if the upgrade you are offered is worth the extra cost.

Never rely on a Disney Cruise upgrade though.

They are increasingly unlikely as Disney cruise ships are so popular and are often fully booked.

24. It’s A Key To The World

When you check in you will be given your stateroom key which is your Key To The World Card.

This allows you to charge all expenses to your room key.

You can limit the charging privileges of others in your stateroom.

You don’t have to give your 8-year-old the power to buy what he wants in the store!

B OARDING THE DISNEY SHIP

disneycruiseboarding

Finally, the time has come to get on the Disney ship.

All that anticipation and preparation.

Now the day has arrived!

27 Do’s and Don’ts For Your First Day On A Disney Cruise Ship

25. Wait For Your Boarding Number

When you check in at the terminal you will be given a card with a boarding number for your party.

Don’t ever think that you can board earlier than your group. You will be stopped!

26. Stop for A Photo

disneycruisecharacters

There are always photographers stationed along the gangway to take your embarkation photo.

Stop if you want or pass it by if you really can’t wait the extra few minutes to board!

We recommend you are not camera shy.

There are many photo opportunities on the ship, but the embarkation photo is one of our favorites.

Here is a Complete Guide to Disney Cruise Photo Packages.

27. Give The Disney Cast Members Your Name

disneywonderrestaurant

When you board the Disney Ship you will be asked for your family name.

Make sure that you give it to them as you have a special surprise welcome!

28. Go To Disney Cruise Guest Services

If you need to book any specially ticketed events, such as Beverage Tastings.

You may still be able to pick up tickets.

29. Start Eating!

disneywondericecream

The food offerings start as soon as you board. You can head up to the pool deck to experience the buffet.

If you want a slightly less crowded space one of the restaurants will also offer a buffet selection or waiter service option.

It won’t be as huge a choice as the pool deck, but fewer people head here so you may get a more relaxing start to the cruise.

Guide to Disney Cruise Food

30. Make Sure You Do the Drill

Muster drills have changed a lot in recent times.

But you still have to comply with the instructions and attend your muster station. This is about safety and it is important.

Don’t be late for your drill. It inconveniences a lot of other guests and Cast Members.

31. Put Your Phone in Airplane Mode

One of the most expensive mistakes that you can make on any cruise is not checking your cell phone coverage.

You can end up with a very hefty bill if you use your cell phone onboard. This applies to calls, text, and data.

You could just put your phone in your room safe and not connect.

However, if you want to use the Navigator App we suggest that you simply put your phone into airplane mode.

32. Take Advantage of Free Wi-Fi

disneywondertowelanimal

If you use your own cell phone provider data provision you will be paying a fortune.

All the Disney ships, except the Wonder, have new internet packages. The Disney Wonder will get the upgrade in October 2023.

Here is a Guide to Disney Cruise Internet Packages.

33. Enjoy the Sail Away Party

Disney knows how to put on a show and the Sail Away Party is no exception. Head on out to the pool deck for a very high-energy party.

You can also watch the port disappear into the distance by going up onto the deck above the pool deck.

Or if you have a balcony stateroom why not enjoy the Drink of the Day in your own private haven?

34. Take a Tour of the Spa

Disneycruisesensesspa

This is a great opportunity to see the Disney Rainforest and the Spa treatment rooms to plan what you would like to do in the spa.

There is always a free-to-enter spa raffle on the first day.

You may as well enter as you may win a free spa treatment or a discount.

D ISNEY CRUISE STATEROOMS

howtochooseadisneycruisesteroom

35. Not All Disney Cruise Staterooms are Created Equal

Disney cruise lines have some of the largest and the best staterooms in the industry. Your choices range from an inside stateroom right up to the magnificent Walt Disney Suite.

Your choice mostly depends upon your budget, but even within the same category, there are some staterooms that are a better choice than others.

Here is our video which shows the smallest of the Disney cruise staterooms which is a Standard Inside Stateroom.

This is the only stateroom category that does not have a split bath.

Read our Disney Cruise Staterooms to Avoid to help you decide.

36. Disney Cruise Staterooms Have Split Bathrooms

disneywondersplitbathroom

Another unique thing about Disney cruises is the “split bathroom” concept. This is ideal for families.

What does it mean? There are 2 bathroom spaces in most of the Disney cruise staterooms.

One has a toilet and a sink. The other has a bath, shower, and sink. Each has plenty of storage space.

The split bathroom idea cuts down waiting time in the morning when everyone is trying to get ready for breakfast!

37. Disney Stateroom Door Decoration is Encouraged

disneycruisedoormagnets

Walk along the corridors of your Disney cruise ship and you will see some spectacular door decorations. Your imagination is the only limit to just how creative you can get.

The doors and walls in your Disney cruise stateroom are magnetic.

Decorations are available to buy, or get creative and make your own!

Just make sure that you do not cause any damage to the stateroom – use magnets, not tape.

You don’t want a nasty shock on your final account if you are fined for damaging the wall!

You might want to check out What Not To Do in Your Disney Stateroom

38.  There is Plenty of Storage

disneycruisestorage

Disney cruise staterooms are very well-designed.

There is plenty of storage space for all your clothes and travel gear.

We always unpack as soon as we arrive so that we have everything to hand.

An invaluable packing item is these Packing Cubes make everything really easy.

You can keep items together. No more searching for socks or swimming stuff. Keep them all organized and you can then just transfer them to a draw in your stateroom.

All the Disney ships now have beds that provide enough space to store your suitcases underneath. You can unpack and forget about them for the rest of the cruise.

39. Yes You Can Do Laundry on a Disney Cruise

No one really wants to do laundry on vacation, but sometimes it just becomes a necessity.

There are several self-service laundries on all of the Disney ships. We always take our own laundry pods of detergent, but it is available onboard.

40. Interactive Television Choices

Of course, all Disney cruise staterooms have a television.

However, if you are sailing on the Disney Fantasy or the Dream you will have a much bigger choice of what to watch in your stateroom than if you sail on the Wonder or the Magic.

The newer ships of the Fantasy, Dream and Wish have on-demand television.

You have a huge choice of Disney movies and television to watch on demand. So if you really want to watch “Peter Pan”, “Toy Story” and “Mary Poppins” in your stateroom you can.

The stage shows from the Walt Disney Theatre are also shown on the television and repeated, so if you miss a show you can watch it in your stateroom.

41. Save a Hotel Key

It is a good idea to hang on to that old hotel room key. The reason? To make the lights work in the stateroom you have to put a credit card-sized card in the slow by the door.

You are supposed to use your Key To The World for this. However, we prefer not to as you are more likely to forget to take it with you and get locked out of your room.

42. Disney Invented Rotational Dining

disneycruisefood

Disney cruise lines are known for their innovative ideas. One of the very best is the concept of Rotational Dining.

What is this?

On each Disney cruise ship, there are 3 main dining restaurants.

All have their own very unique theme. Each night you will visit a different restaurant.

When you rotate between restaurants your servers will come with you!

This has a wonderful advantage in that your servers get to know you.

The Disney cruise servers are amazing and go out of their way to make sure that you enjoy the dining experience.

Your servers will get to know your likes and dislikes. They will even cut up your child’s food for them! Nothing is too much trouble for them.

For more information on how this works, you can see our Disney Cruise Rotational Dining Guide

43. Can’t Decide What To Choose on the Menu?

Overwhelmed by the great choices on the Disney cruise restaurant menus? No problem. You can order a couple of options and no one will mind.

If you want the salmon and the steak go ahead.

Two desserts?

Just be aware that your waistline may not forgive you for it!

44. Want Something Not on the Disney Cruise Menu?

disneycruisemenu

Your Disney servers want you to have the best experience possible and will do everything they can to accommodate you.

If you enjoyed a particular dish one evening make sure that they know. If you give them at least 24 hours’ notice they may be able to get it for you again.

Just be considerate.

They will make it happen if they can.

So if you want that same entree or dessert every night just let them know.

45. Don’t Skip Animator’s Palate

disneydreamanimatorspalate

Each ship has three rotational dining restaurants. They are all a little different from each other, apart from Animator’s Palate which is on all of the Disney ships.

Your first night in Animator’s Palate has a very special show for you. Be sure not to miss it.

46. The Disney Cruise Drinks are Free – Sort Of

disneycruisedrinkoftheday

Well, not all of the drinks are free, but you could sail on the whole Disney cruise without spending anything extra on beverages.

You just have to know which are free.

There is free soda from the dispensers on the pool deck which is available 24/7.

Soda, regular coffee, tea, iced tea, and milk are available for free in the dining rooms.

Your waiters will learn your preferences and bring them to your table to have them waiting for you for dinner.

disneypalodrinks

Of course, there are many tempting drinks that are not free.

All alcoholic beverages and cocktails are charged for.

You may be tempted by the drink of the day. There is always an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic drink of the day available at a reduced price.

For the complete guide check out:

Disney Cruise Line – Are The Drinks Really Free?

47. Sometimes There Are Free Cocktails

disneycruisedrinkspackage

Yes, you read it right.

On the formal evening of the Captain’s Dinner, there is a welcome reception with wait staff offering cocktails and wine.

The Ship’s Officers including the Captain will be there to greet you.

If you attend a Disney Vacation Club sales presentation it is used to be they gave out free cocktails. However, it is now many years since I have seen this.

In the last few presentations, I have been to they have only given out free bottled water.

You used to get a very nice gift when you attended but recently we have not seen this.

The presentation is fun and there is no sales pressure. You may be tempted though, so do your calculations carefully before you sign up!

There is usually a free draw to enter to win an onboard credit.

Also, you will probably be offered an onboard credit to attend a one-on-one sales consultation.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

48. Have a Celebration?

Always tell your servers if you have a celebration such as a birthday or an anniversary. They will arrange something special for you.

49. Endless Disney Cruise Ice Cream

Self-service ice cream is available for free on the pool decks of every Disney ship.

Why not make your own float with the free soda and ice cream?

50. Didn’t Finish That Bottle of Wine?

disneycruisewinepackage

If you want to enjoy wine at dinner, but don’t think you can finish the bottle, Disney has a solution.

Your server will save your wine for you and the next day it will be waiting at your table for you.

Is The Disney Cruise Wine Package Worth The Cost?

51. Breakfast and Lunch are Not Just A Buffet

disneycruisebreakfast

Every Disney ship has an amazing breakfast and lunch buffet served up on the pool deck.

However, what some people don’t realize is that there is a sit-down breakfast and lunch served in one of the restaurants every day.

52. Disney Cruise Special Dietary Needs? No Problem

Disney cruise lines are incredible at catering to any special dietary need you may have. We have sailed with family members who need vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets.

Just tell your waiters or mention your dietary needs at the buffet or specialty restaurants.

You can also register this in your Cruise Personalizer before you board. Disney cruise lines will do everything they can to help you.

Disney Cruise chefs are more than willing to create special meals for you.

53. Breakfast is with Character

characterbreakfastondisneycruise

If you are sailing on a Disney cruise which is 7 nights or longer, you will have the opportunity to have a character breakfast. This is included in the cost of your cruise.

As anyone who has been to Disney World or Disneyland will know, this is a huge benefit!

Character breakfasts usually cost $40 and up per person on land. On your Disney cruise, it is included in the cost of your fare.

You do have to plan ahead for the Disney cruise character breakfast . You need a ticket and places are limited. You need to log in to your Cruise Personalizer as soon as you can, to book tickets.

There may be some available from Guest Services. Go as soon as you board the ship. They are limited and you do not want to be disappointed.

Note that this service is currently suspended

D ISNEY CRUISE ROOM SERVICE

54. disney cruise room service is free.

dineycruisebreakfastroomservice

Room service on a Disney cruise is free.

There are some items that are charged for such as alcohol and soda, but most of it is free of charge.

Just remember to tip the crew member who delivers your food.

Make sure that you have some $1 bills handy.

However, if you forget, no problem.

You can add a tip to the receipt that you will have to sign.

55. Not Everything is on the Room Service Menu

There are some items that are not on the menu but are available from room service.

One of the most popular items which are not shown on the menu is the Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bar.

Cake of the Day is on the menu, but the secret items are Dessert of the Day and Pie of the Day.

Obviously, these change every day, so we have a tradition of making sure we order these on sea days.

Disney Cruise Room Service Menu

56. Breakfast in Bed is On The House

disneycruiseroomservice

Breakfast in bed can seem like an extravagant indulgence. However, on a Disney cruise, you can indulge as many times as you like.

It is all part of the service. Just fill out your breakfast selections on the card in your stateroom and put it on your door prior to 3 am the night before.

Then wake up to your breakfast choices delivered to your room.

The best way to enjoy breakfast is on your verandah. One of the best times we ever had on a Disney cruise was sitting on our verandah eating breakfast whilst going through the Panama Canal locks.

57. Milk and Cookies in the Evening

Yes, we know that you will probably have consumed more food than you want to admit by the evening.

However, there really is nothing quite like ordering milk and cookies before bedtime.

58. Order Coffee at Night

disneycruisecovecafecoffee

No, we are not suggesting that you get your caffeine fix just before bedtime.

However, if you order a carafe of coffee just before you go to bed at night it will still be warm enough in the morning for you to enjoy.

This means you won’t have to be disturbed by room service early in the morning, but you will be able to stumble out of bed and have your first cup of coffee when you wake up.

59. D ISNEY CRUISE FOR KIDS

disneywonderkidsclub

A Disney cruise is for all ages. You just know that the kids are going to have a blast with all of the features on board for them.

60. It’s A Small World Nursery

Disney cruise lines are one of only a few cruise lines that offer a babysitting service for the under 3s.

Starting aged 6 months and going all the way up to the age of 3 the It’s a Small World Nursery will care for the youngest cruisers on the ship.

There is an additional charge and you do have to book in advance. You can do this online in the Cruise Personalizer.

The charge is $9 per hour for your first child and $8 per hour for the second and any additional children. in your family.

61. The Oceaneer’s Club and Lab is Paradise for Kids

Your kids probably won’t want to leave the kid’s clubs. The Oceaneer’s Club and Lab are for children aged 3 to 12.

Who wouldn’t want to meet Spiderman or pilot the Millennium Falcon? There are lots of organized activities or they can just play with their new friends.

62. The Edge is the Place to be for Tweens

disneycruiseedge

The 11 to 14-year-old set can often be the most difficult to please. Fortunately, on a Disney cruise, they have The Edge.

If you have an 11-year-old they have the choice of either being in The Edge or the Oceaneer’s Club.

63. The Vibe is the Place Teens Want to Be

disneycruiesvibe

Wondering what your teens are going to do on the Disney cruise ships?

The answer is to spend a whole lot of time in Vibe. Particularly if you are sailing on the Disney Dream or the Disney Fantasy.

The newer shops have a fabulous outdoor area for the teens which includes hot tubs and a sun deck.

64. Chill Spa is Open for Teens

Most spas are for the over-18s only. However, Disney has recognized that sometimes teens want to be pampered in the spa.

Check out the Chill Spa which is exclusively for the 13 to 18-year-old set.

D ISNEY CRUISE POOL DECK

65. ride the aquaduck.

disneyaquaduck

One of the best features of Disney Fantasy and the Dream is the AquaDuck. A water coaster at sea!

The Wish has the AquaMouse.

This is a lot of fun for all the family, but of course, the wait times can be long.

To get your best chance of riding with almost no lines on embarkation day or wait until night time.

Most people are either watching the show or eating dinner in the evening so the lines are short.

66. The Disney Cruise Pools are Fun

disney cruise swimming pool

All of the Disney ships have two pools on the family pool deck.

The first is a toddler pool and the second is the family pool. Don’t expect to get any real swimming done in these pools!

The family pool is small and on sea days tends to be crowded.

67. Relax on a Pool Lounger

disneycruisepooldeck

There are plenty of pool loungers around the pool and up on the deck.

Be considerate of others and do not reserve a lounger by putting a towel or your belongings on it.

Just not cool.

68. Towels are Provided

There is no need to bring your own pool towels on board or take towels from your stateroom.

There are plenty of pool towels up on the deck.

69. Catch a Movie on Disney Funnel Vision

disneycruiseconciergetips

One of the best features of the Disney cruise pool deck is Funnel Vision.

Disney movies are played all day and evening.

It’s fun to splash around in the pool and watch a Disney movie.

At night relax on a pool lounger and snag one of the blankets and watch a Disney movie.

D ISNEY CRUISE TIPS FOR ADULTS

disneyfantasyquietcovepool

Many people think that a Disney cruise is centered around the kids, but really this is just not true.

Sure there is plenty going on for the younger members of the group, but there are so many things for the adults to enjoy too.

70. Disney Dining for Adults

Disney has some of the best dining at sea.

All of the ships have dining which caters to the over-18s only.

Every Disney ship has Palo, which is an Italian-themed restaurant. Disney’s Palo offers dinner every night of the cruise and brunch on select days.

I think that the very best value is Palo brunch .

With a charge of just $45, you can eat your way through a huge selection of hot entree items.

Note that the buffet is currently not available at Palo Brunch but you can order all you like from the menu.

disneymagicpalo

Remy is available on Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

Widely recognized as one of the best culinary experiences at sea, Remy is named after the lead character in the Pixar movie Ratatouille.

Dinner is available every night. The Champagne Brunch and the Dessert Experience are offered on select days.

Yes, it is pricey at $95 per person for dinner, and $200 if you want the wine pairing.

Enchante is the fine dining restaurant on Disney Wish.

71. Indulge at the Disney Cruise Spa

If you want to experience the ultimate in relaxation you can book a Disney spa treatment. There are lots of options offered including treatments for couples.

You can book ahead of your sailing to get the best reservation times.

Appointments do book up, so if you have something specific in mind, book online before you sail.

Remember though that all spa treatments will have an 18% gratuity automatically added.

72. The Disney Cruise Rainforest Room is Pure Luxury

disneycruiserainforesthottub

Every Disney Ship has a Rainforest Room in the spa.

This is truly the place to be if you want to indulge in some luxurious downtime and relaxation.

The Wish has the largest Rainforest Room. It is also the only one which is open to the outdoors from above.

The Disney Dream and the Fantasy still have probably the very best Rainforest rooms on the Disney ships.

Each has two steam rooms, a dry sauna, and scented showers with multiple different programs.

A fabulous feature is the heated hot stone loungers with views of the ocean.

You can even relax in one of the two hot tubs which overlook the ocean.

disneywonderrainforest

The Disney Wonder and the Magic also have the Rainforest Room, but it is not quite so luxurious.

They have saunas, steam rooms, heated loungers, and showers. It’s a nice space but not as great as on the larger ships.

Why The Disney Cruise Rainforest Room is Worth It

73. Adult-Only Pools on Disney Cruises

disneywonderquietcovepool

There is plenty of space reserved for the over-18s only on the Disney ships.

This includes adult pools and hot tubs.

74. Bars and Lounges on the Disney Ships

DisneyWonderBars

There are plenty of options of places to enjoy a drink or two on all of the Disney ships.

One of our favorites is the Ooh La La bar on the Disney Fantasy. Guests can choose from an extensive champagne menu.

The French boudoir decor is completely over the top, but it’s a lot of fun.

Guide to Bars on the Disney Wonder

75. Disney Cruise Lines Alcohol Policy

disneycruisealcohol

Disney cruise lines have a very generous policy about how much of your own beer and wine you can bring on board. Many cruise lines do not let you bring anything at all.

However, on a Disney cruise, you can bring up to 2 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of beer per adult.

You can drink the wine in your stateroom and there is no charge.

However, if you want to enjoy the wine you brought to the restaurant there will be a $25 corkage charge.

76. Disney Cruise Wine Packages Can Save You Money

disneywinepackageprices

If you enjoy drinking wine on a Disney cruise the Wine Package may be the thing for you.

The Wine Package allows you to pre-purchase either a Classic or a Premium Package.

You choose the number of days from 3 to 7 nights. Each night you can pick a bottle from the Classic or Premium Wine list.

Prices start at $95 for a 3-night package.

The more nights you have, the cheaper the per-bottle price works out to be.

If you don’t finish the bottle that evening it will be stored for you and you can drink it later.

You can see more details at Disney Cruise Wine Package

77. Pick Up A Coffee Card

disneycruisetipping

You can get free drip coffee on the pool deck or in the restaurants.

However, it isn’t the best coffee you have ever tasted.

If you enjoy a decent cup of specialty coffee you can pay extra for your drink of choice.

Ask for a coffee card. Each time you buy a drink you will get a stamp. When you have 5 stamps your 6th drink will be free.

It used to be that you could save these and use on your next cruise. However, now the card states that they are not to be used on a future cruise.

Time will tell whether or not the servers still allow it, but don’t bet on this trick still working.

Use your free coffee entitlement before your current cruise ends.

78. The Cove Cafe is a Must

disneycruisecash

One of our favorite areas on the Disney cruise is the Cove Cafe. It is a great place to sit and read a book and enjoy a coffee or something a little stronger.

There is a small selection of books and magazines, but bring your own as the selection really is small.

Cove Cafe is a very tempting place to pick up some snacks.

Check out the croissants in the morning. We challenge you to resist the selection of cakes and desserts in the display cabinet.

It is all included so you can indulge!

E NTERTAINMENT ON A DISNEY CRUISE

79. check your disney cruise navigator often.

The Navigator is where you will find out what’s happening on board the ship every day. The paper Navigator is now only delivered to your stateroom every night if you request this from your Room Steward.

If you want a paper Navigator you can pick one up at Guest Services. Or you can use the Disney Navigator App on your phone. Remember to download it before you get on board.

80. The Disney Cruise Shows are Amazing

This really can’t be overstated.

You will be amazed at just how good the shows are on the Disney cruise.

They are Broadway quality and you should definitely make time to see as many shows as you can.

There are two performances every evening. You can see the early one if you have late seating and the late one if you are dining at 5.45 pm.

81. Take Your Seats Early

waltdisneytheatredisneycruise

All shows are performed in the Walt Disney Theatre. There really isn’t a bad seat in the house, but there are some which are better than others.

We like to be about five or six rows back in the middle.

However, if you do not arrive early the front level of seats is likely to be gone.

We prefer anything in the middle over the ones on the sides, even if it is quite far back.

Saving seats for others is really bad form.

Don’t do it.

82. Each Disney Ship Has Different Shows

disneywonderwaltdisneytheatre

Each ship has a different selection of shows, although there is some overlap with certain shows being staged on more than one of the Disney cruise ships.

On the nights when the big stage productions are not scheduled, there will usually be another entertainer such as a magician or a juggler.

Many of these entertainers have been performing with Disney cruise lines for many years and they are generally very good.

83. There May Be A Show For The Adults

Not everything is family-friendly! Often there is a late-night version of one of the entertainer’s acts such as a comedian or a magician.

Treat yourself and let the kids go to the kid’s clubs while you enjoy a night out.

84. Go to the Movies!

The Disney cruise movie theatres show new releases and classic movies.

Each of the Disney ships has at least one. Disney Wish has two!

85. Skip The Popcorn

Outside the Walt Disney Theatre and the Buena Vista Theatre, you will be tempted by the smell of popcorn and the lure of specialty drinks.

These items are not included.

If you want to take a drink into the show with you stop on the pool deck to get your drinks for free. You can even bring some snacks in with you if you want – that is if you aren’t already full from the buffet!

86. There is Something for Everyone

disneycruiseaccount

Every day there are lots of events scheduled.

Want to learn how to draw Mickey Mouse, make that dessert you just enjoyed in the restaurants or enjoy a wine-tasting event?

Most things on board are included, but you will have to pay extra for wine-tasting events.

87. The Art of the Theme Tour is Not to be Missed

This adults-only tour of the ship is well worth joining.

It is free and will take you on a tour whilst showing you some of the design secrets of the Disney ships.

There is so much attention to detail on the Disney ships and it is nice to hear some of the behind-the-scenes stories.

D ISNEY CASTAWAY CAY

DisneyCruiseCastawayCayDoubleDip2015

One of the highlights of a Disney Caribbean or Bahamian cruise is a port stop at Castaway Cay.

Disney cruise line has its own fabulous private island in the Bahamas. Here are some Disney cruise tips to make the most of your visit to Castaway Cay.

Disney Castaway Cay – The Ultimate Guide

88. Send a Special Post Card

Castaway Cay has its own post office. If you want to send a card with a very special stamp just stop at the post office. It is on your left just after you get off the ship.

89. There are Trams to Get You Around Castaway Cay

You can easily walk to the beaches, but there are plenty of trams to get you there if you want to save energy. We usually walk to the beach if it isn’t too hot, but we always take the tram back.

90. Pick Your Perfect Beach

The most popular beach is the Family Beach on Castaway Cay .

However, there is a beach reserved solely for the over-18s. Make your way to Serenity Bay if you want some peace and quiet.

castawaycaydisneyprivateislandbanamas

Disney Castaway Cay Excursions and Activities

91. No Need to Get Back on the Ship to Eat

There is plenty of food on Castaway Cay. While it isn’t the finest food you will eat on your Disney cruise, the barbecue is perfectly fine. There is something about eating good barbecue food on the beach that makes it so much fun.

However, make sure that you have eaten breakfast. The barbecues are only open for lunch.

92. Special Dietary Needs on Castaway Cay

If you have special dietary requirements make sure that you let your waiters know on the ship. They will make sure that it is waiting for you at the barbecue.

93. Join in the Castaway Cay 5K Run

A very popular event on Castaway Cay is the 5K run. It is free of charge and ages 10 and up can take part.

You don’t have to sign up anymore.

Make sure that you get an early start though – it can get very hot on the island!

94. Try Something New

You can spend the day on one of the beaches, or you can try one of the Castaway Cay Port Adventures.

These range from snorkeling to parasailing, and kayaking to getting up close and personal with a stingray. You can book these ahead of time on your Cruise Personalizer, or when you get on the ship.

95. The Quest for a Castaway Cay Cabana

One of the most difficult reservations to get on a Disney cruise is a Castaway Cay Cabana.

Even though prices start at $399 this is one of the most sought-after things on a Disney cruise.

You can book them in your Cruise Personalizer, but as there are only 21 cabanas available, they sell out in minutes.

You really need to either be a Concierge guest or a Pearl Castaway Cay member to be in with a chance.

You can try your luck when you board the ship by putting your name on the waitlist.

You could get very lucky and someone may cancel. It happens, but just don’t bet on it!

96. Take Your Time

People tend to get back on the ship in the early afternoon.

Whilst we always recommend getting back on board in good time, you can wait until shortly before all aboard time on Castaway Cay.

This gives you maximum time on the island.

97. Be Safe

It is important always to wear sunscreen. Sunburn is never a good thing and it can ruin your vacation.

The combination of the sun sea and the perfect island can sometimes make you forget to keep reapplying sunscreen.

Just be careful.

We have written a Complete Guide to Castaway Cay where you will find lots more tips and ideas.

M EET THE DISNEY CHARACTERS

disneycruisecharacters

A Disney cruise is a great place to get to meet a huge variety of Disney characters.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of the experience.

98. Check Your Navigator

There are lots of character appearances every day. The schedule will be posted in your Navigator every day. You can plan who you want to meet.

99. The Character Attendant is Your Friend

All Disney characters have an attendant to keep them organized and safe. If you have any questions always ask the attendant.

They can help with questions like when the next appearance will be and what costume the character will be wearing. They will also take pictures of you with your own camera.

100. Arrive Early

We think that it is much easier to meet characters on a Disney cruise than it is at the parks. However, you should still be prepared for a wait.

The characters often spend more time with guests than they would in the parks.

Usually, if you arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled appearance you will be towards the front half of the line.

101. Bring An Autograph Book

Make sure that you bring something for the characters to sign.

We have heard recently that Marvel characters will not sign anything which has been signed by a Disney or Pixar character, so you may need to bring separate books if you are swapping universes!

102. Look Around You

Often the best character sightings are ones that you don’t expect. We remember seeing Chip and Dale up on deck during the Panama Canal cruise.

Or sometimes you see characters in the hallways walking to the meet and greet.

103. Meeting the Princesses

You can never guarantee which Princesses will be on board, but they will definitely be available for a meet and greet.

Usually, you will see Tiana, Cinderella, and Belle. However, don’t guarantee to your 4-year-old they will see a specific Princess as they may not be on board.

There is always a Disney Princess ticketed event. You can sign up in your Cruise Personalizer or at Guest Services. Tickets are limited and go quickly. This is not an essential event as you will see them at other times.

104. Anna and Elsa are Different

disneywonderfrozen

Anna and Elsa are rather more difficult to find. The only way to see them is to get tickets for the meet and greet. You will not see them out and about on the ship.

Note this is temporarily suspended

105. Tea With A Disney Princess

The best way to have time with the Princesses is by booking the Disney Cruise Royal Court Royal Tea .

This amazing opportunity to meet the Disney Princesses includes plenty of time to meet your favorites whilst enjoying a traditional High Tea.

You will have to book ahead and be prepared to blow the budget. This experience is designed for those aged 3 to 12 and costs $210 per child and $69 per adult.

The children will walk away with some nice gifts and some great memories – but obviously, the cost takes some thinking about.

106. This Doesn’t Work Anymore

You might read online that if you take a shirt or picture frame and some markers to Guest Services it will magically be returned to your stateroom having been signed by the character.

Unfortunately, it seems as though too many people got to know about this Disney cruise tip, so they had to stop doing it.

107. Characters on Castaway Cay

Some of the characters make it out onto Castaway Cay (although you will never see a Princess on the island).

One of the coolest characters is Captain Jack Sparrow who will often make an appearance out on Serenity Bay.

Fall 2024 Updates to the Disney Dream

The Disney Dream will return to Fort Lauderdale this fall with some exciting new changes. First up … the funnel is getting a glow-up with a brand-new Tower Suite. Updates are also coming to the Oceaneer Club, Edge, Vibe, and more. These updates will debut after a drydock period at the end of the summer’s European sailings, with the first post-update sailing departing on October 20, 2024, from Southampton. Read on for details!

Youth Spaces

Marvel WEB Workshop is coming to the Oceaneer Club, Disney’s dedicated youth spaces for cruisers aged 3-10. Recruits will be able to test new suit prototypes, conduct training simulations, and prepare to defend the world. Plus, Avenger “mentors” will put in appearances from time to time to review their work.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The Edge tween club for guests aged 11-14 will move to Deck 5. Along with the move, the club will add a club lounge and dance floor, and access to an outdoor recreational deck space that it will share with Vibe.

Concierge Spaces

The concierge lounge will be updated and  expanded into an all-new space inspired by the film “Hercules”. Look for airy details and bright gold touches that call to mind Mount Olympus and its home among the clouds.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

Perhaps the biggest ooh-and-ah news … the Dream’s funnel is being retrofitted with a concierge suite. It’s tempting to say this was the driver for the expanded concierge lounge, but there is only one suite and it sleeps 8, so we’re not convinced that was the tipping point. But it is the reason why Edge, formerly located in the funnel on Deck 13, is moving to Deck 5.

The Dream Tower Suite will pay homage to the Dream’s stern character, Sorcerer Mickey, with theming based on the film “Fantasia” and its iconic “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” sequence. Gilt, glitter, and styling in keeping with the Dream’s art deco vibe will be found throughout the stateroom. Look for a carpet that recalls flowing water, a chandelier reminiscent of Mickey’s control of the waves, and a double-height living room with floor-to-ceiling windows that afford you a commanding ocean view of your own.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The 2,030 square-foot Dream Tower Suite will be category 1A, with a private entrance on Deck 13. The suite sleeps 8 in 2 main bedrooms, a library/bedroom, and a children’s room. You’ll find king beds in the main bedrooms and a pull-down queen in the library; bunk beds in the children’s room mean there’ll be no “he kicked me!” complaining.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

There will be plenty of space to get ready for a Port Adventure with 4.5 bathrooms that feature a variety of double sinks, stand-alone bathtubs, and walk-in rain showers. The suite also features a large living area including an open dining salon with pantry and wet bar.

New Eats & Spa Refresh

On deck 11, a cantina will join the Quick Service lineup. Expect tacos, burritos, and bowls on the menu. Details were skimpy on the spa updates: “A refreshed check-in area” along with new treatment rooms.

Are you excited to sail on the Dream with these updates? Which new features are most interesting to you? Let us know in the comments!

NEWS: Hurricane Forces Disney Fantasy Cruise Ship To Change Course

disney cruise tipping guidelines

With Hurricane Beryl moving across the Caribbean , many cruise ships have had to alter their courses.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

In an effort to avoid the storm, as well as for the safety and comfort of passengers on board, cruise lines like Norweigan Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and even Disney Cruise Line have made changes to their itineraries.

Currently, the Disney Fantasy , the fourth ship in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet , is on a seven-day Western Caribbean cruise.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The ship left Port Canaveral on Saturday and was expected to make stops at Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay .

disney cruise tipping guidelines

The ship was supposed to dock in Falmouth, Jamaica, tomorrow, July 3rd. However, due to Hurricane Beryl, this port day was replaced with a day at sea.  Disney along with other cruise lines want both passengers and crew to be safe during this storm and moving from a port day to a sea day does just that.

The definitive guide to pool chair etiquette

How long can you save a pool chair? Experts weigh in on that question and others.

disney cruise tipping guidelines

On a recent trip to an Italian resort, etiquette expert Myka Meier thought she would be arriving at the pool early. Although it wasn’t yet 8 a.m., she found the earliest birds had swarmed.

“There were already a chunk of chairs with towels, but nobody sitting on them for about three hours,” said Meier, founder of Beaumont Etiquette and a frequent pool lounger. “I was there the whole time reading and working.”

The subject of poolside power struggles has launched countless social media gripes : How long can you save a prime spot before someone lays claim to your territory?

Jen Gay, who creates guides to Las Vegas under the name Vegas Starfish , has felt the tension. She recently encountered a woman who had reserved a row of chairs in the shade at a resort off the Strip. Gay said she would use some of the seats until the woman’s family showed up.

“She threw a fit,” Gay said. “We sat there for three hours; her family never came.”

While chair hogging is one of the most well-known pool offenses, it’s hardly the only one. We asked swimming pool experts to share their pet peeves and top tips for summer sunbathing season.

Know the time limits

At the Fontainebleau Miami Beach , which has 10 pools and as many as 1,200 loungers, the policy says guests can’t abandon their chairs for more than 45 minutes without losing them.

Cole Boucher, founder of Essential Hospitality , which oversees the hotel’s pool operations, said attendants will explain the guidelines to guests and keep track of when people leave their chairs. There might be a grace period, he said, but it won’t last all day.

“If you come down two, three hours later, your chair is not going to be there,” he said.

On Celebrity Cruises , whose ships have less-sprawling pool decks, the rules are even tighter. The cruise company says guests shouldn’t move other people’s belongings, but items left unattended for more than 30 minutes will be collected and stored at a guest relations desk.

Meier said her personal standard is to give people two hours away from their chair, which she considers a “reasonable time” for someone to leave, eat lunch, stop by their room and return. Even if someone left items for longer, she said, she would never move their things herself.

“If anything, I would try to find somebody who worked there,” she said.

Keep the music to yourself

Carly Caramanna , a theme park journalist who regularly spends time at Disney and Universal-area resort pools and water parks, said personal sound systems are her biggest pet peeve. Often, she said, poolgoers will blast tunes that are not appropriate for the setting.

“People come here, I know they spend a lot of money,” she said. “You have to understand that other people are trying to enjoy their time, too.”

Boucher said greeters at the Fontainebleau’s pool deck will make sure guests understand the rules — including a ban on outside speakers.

“But sometimes people sneak them in,” he said.

Don’t expect quiet at the party pool

Many hotels and resorts have a veritable pool buffet: one for adults, one for families, one for the party crowd, etc. If you end up at the wrong one, you have only yourself to blame.

“I sometimes am in the mood to go on slides and I want a piña colada, so I’ll go to the lively pool for atmosphere,” Caramanna said. For waterside working or chill lounging, the quieter pool is her choice.

Options are even more varied in Las Vegas, where there are multiple types of pool scenes, said Gay, who focuses on resorts, food, entertainment and other activities outside of gambling. She said day clubs are essentially nightclub atmospheres in a daytime pool setting, with bottle service, high-profile performers and costs that can run into the high thousands. Party pools are targeted to more budget crowds; think Budweiser rather than bubbly.

Then there are luxury or family pools without the party vibe.

“If you expect an adult experience, go to a 21-and-over pool, of which there are many,” she said. “Do not go to a family-friendly pool and be upset at the presence of children.”

Keep meals clean — and on land

You may be tempted by the poolside menu, and you absolutely should indulge. But once that food arrives, you have responsibilities.

“I wouldn’t eat chicken tenders in the pool if I were you,” Boucher said. He predicted disaster: Someone does a cannonball and drenches the snack. A wayward beach ball slams into your meal. “Your chicken tenders are going to go in the pool, and we’ll have to fish it out.”

Meier recalled spending time by a pool in Miami surrounded by sunbathers who were eating.

“The bugs were horrible because people would just leave their trash afterward,” she said. “I think if you do eat at the pool, it’s your responsibility to either clean up after yourself or call the pool server to help remove your dishes so people aren’t tripping over them, they’re not baking in the sun.”

Drink responsibly

You’re surrounded by liquid, you’re taking a plunge every now and then. But don’t forget to drink water — especially if you’re drinking other things.

Gay said that at pricey Vegas day clubs, revelers will stay cool in the pool, drink alcohol and forget that the temperature is above 100 degrees. That can lead to intoxication and illness.

“You don’t want to pay $10,000 to not remember your day,” she said. “Hydrate is the most important thing. Just because you’re in water doesn’t mean you’re soaking it up.”

Tip the attendant

The pool attendant might free up a claimed-but-unused lounge chair for you. They might angle your umbrella, bring towels or offer water. All of that deserves a tip, experts say.

Meier went to one pool at a hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where someone cleaned sunglasses and guests could go to a tent where a worker would apply sunblock.

“There’s varying degrees of service that I’ve seen,” she said. She recommends a couple bucks to $5 a day, depending on how pool attendants help.

Gay said that in a hospitality-centric destination like Las Vegas, people who do these jobs are paid with the expectation that tips will supplement their salaries.

“I am a big proponent of tipping anyone who provides you with service,” she said, adding that pool guests who get their own towels and drinks need not bother. “If you are not utilizing the services, obviously you don’t have to tip.”

Use umbrella courtesy

Maybe you’ve been baking for a while and need shade — or you’re done hiding from the heat. But if you want to raise or lower an umbrella over your seat, check with your neighbor before making changes. Depending on the angle of the sun, it could cover more than one chair.

“I think that’s really important to ask before you put up the umbrella; or move to a place that’s shaded,” Meier said. “Same with putting it down.”

Cover chairs with pool towels

Meier compared a pool chair to a gym mat: Both are best when covered by a towel for reasons of hygiene.

“You’re sweating, you’ve got sunscreen,” she said. “You should put the towel on the pool chair as a consideration to the next guest.”

Dress for the environment

Caramanna said she sees a lot of people wearing thong bathing suits at theme-park-area resort pools. And while they may look fantastic, it’s not necessarily the right venue.

“I don’t think that’s appropriate at a family-friendly resort,” she said. “I feel like you need to get to know the lay of the land and the codes of etiquette.”

She recommended that guests at family-centric pools not “have your everything out for everyone to see.”

Don’t spray your neighbor with sunscreen

Doctors recommend applying sunscreen before going outdoors and giving it about 15 minutes to be absorbed by the skin. Boucher has a similar suggestion to avoid subjecting fellow poolgoers to secondhand sunscreen application. Especially if you’re using an aerosol bottle.

“Do it inside your room or before you get to the pool or even an open space area where there’s not a lot of people,” he said. “People are consuming food and beverages around the pool at all times. Getting up and spraying, it’s definitely a don’t.”
