As being said, some call this island the Hawaii of Europe, but Fuerteventura needs no such comparisons. Probably because it is volcanic and an island. But also for the surfing potential.

The crystal clear waters of Fuerteventura offer a very varied range of waves. From the friendliest to the most ruthless.

The north coast of Fuerteventura has world-class waves. The beaches of the East Coast are perfect for learning to surf. The south of the island can withstand a lot of wind and is full of secret surf spots that are worth visiting.

Surf spots in Fuerteventura

The North coast of Fuerteventura boasts exposed reefs that eagerly pick up the swells. From mellow waves perfect for beginners to challenging tubes at spots like Lobos and Derecha de los Alemanes, there’s something for every surfer. The long west coast offers open, rock-strewn beach breaks, while the far south remains an isolated gem, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds.

Isla de Lobos can be reached by ferry from the Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo. Lobos is the longest wave in the Canary Islands and one of the longest in the world. It is without doubt one of the great jewels of Fuerteventura, with three well sections and barrel time.

When Lobos works, it’s busy on the spot. So respect each other and especially the locals. Also bring reef shoes.

El Bristol, Corralejo

Located on the side of the windmills you find as you leave Corralejo, El Bristol is a powerful links wave with quite difficult sections and a strong start. This spot is usually only surfed by the locals.

Punta Elena, Corralejo

Also known as Rocky Point. This surf spot is mainly surfed by surfers from Corralejo because it is very close to the city. Punta Elena has two waves;

• A smaller one that breaks near the shore
• and a larger one that breaks that some five hundred yards from land.

The first is a fast, hollow, and powerful wave, suitable for all levels; the second is a much bigger and more intense wave where your start has to be good; only for experienced surfers.

It is often busy here with beginners from local surf schools.

El Cotillo is an old fishing village built around the harbor. The beach is one of the most spectacular in Fuerteventura. The waves – left and right – break on a sandy bottom and, together with the landscape, form an ideal set to start surfing. In short, perfect for a surf holiday for beginners.

A surf spot where you will find waves left and right (especially the long right one is nice), a good refuge for those days when there is a north wind. Suitable for all levels. Here too it can get quite busy with both SUPpers and longboarders, because it is a relaxed big wave that is relatively easy to ride.

Second largest island of the archipelago, Fuerteventura is also where you can find the highest amount of surf spots. Whether you are a beginner surfer looking to catch your first few waves or an expert chasing barrels, Fuerteventura has something for everyone!

The island is fairly long, stretching from south to north. On a surf trip, most people will want to settle in Corralejo, on Tenerife’s north shore, since this town provides great access to many decent surf spots. There is also a great atmosphere in town with numerous accommodation, restaurants, bars and cafes. There are also a few surf camps in Corralejo to help you with surfing lessons or surfboard rental.

The best time to surf Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands, is from October to April for bigger and more consistent waves. Beginners will be able to enjoy smaller waves during the summer season which lasts from June to September.

There are two options to get to Fuerteventura: by air or by boat. The airport is located on the east coast, in El Matorral, from which you can decide between heading north or south. Corralejo is about 30 minutes away from the airport.

Surfing In Fuerteventura & Best Things To Do In Corralejo, Canary Islands

Being able to surf has always been a big dream of mine. Maybe the fact that there are no good surfing beaches in Italy made it even more of a dream, something that one day on the other side of the world I would be able to do.

I tried surfing in Bali , Costa Rica and Australia , but for the first time in my life last week I attended a proper surf camp in Fuerteventura.

I teamed up with Planet Surf Camps to experience life in their surf house in Corralejo, in the Canary Islands, and learn how to surf.

Learning to surf in Fuerteventura with Planet Surf Camps

About Fuerteventura & the Canary Islands

Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary Islands , a group of islands 100km off the north coast of Africa that are actually part of Spain. I had previously been to Gran Canaria , but it was my first time in Fuerteventura.

Fuerteventura, like the other Canary Islands, is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful beaches and nice weather year round. It’s considered a must-see on many Spain bucket lists .

The Canary Islands are actually a very popular European winter destination for those looking for beach and sunshine holidays.

We were there in October and were comfortable in a t-shirt and shorts all day, just make sure to pack a hoodie for the evenings or after surfing as it can get chilly when the wind picks up.

Fuerteventura is especially famous for water sports, such as surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing, thanks to the good wind and ocean conditions.

I had been previously been surfing in Tenerife , but only for a one off class, so we did the beginner surf classes with Planet Surf Camps.

We did around 3 hours of surf classes every day for five days, and had access to renting boards at the surf house if we wanted to do additional practice alone (although if you’re a complete beginner like us, you’ll find 3 hours a day is more than enough).

All our classes were in groups of 8 or less, which is great since our instructor (Nuno, really great guy!) was able to follow each of us individually and help us out in the water.

The time of the classes changed every day depending on the tides and waves of the specific day, which made it a bit hard to plan what other things to do around Corralejo, but it’s obviously better to be surfing in good conditions than at a specific time each day.

You’ll find out the time of your class from a blackboard in the surf house kitchen the previous evening.

We surfed every day at Playa del Moro, but know that other groups were taken to other surfing spots like Rocky Point (which you can reach on foot from the surf house) and other beaches around the island.

Our instructor Nuno was very knowledgeable and good at explaining the basics to us, starting with how to pop up on a surfboard .

After driving to the beach together from the surf house we did some warm ups and practice on sand, before all jumping into the sea and attempting to catch some waves.

Nuno helped us out and always had a good spot for us to practice with good waves.

Overall there are pretty good surfing conditions in Fuerteventura for beginners, and Planet Surf Camps are great at teaching and making sure you go to the right beaches and catch the right waves.

The atmosphere at the Planet Surf house is also great, relaxed and friendly we always felt welcome hanging out in the communal areas.

Other cool things to do in Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Surfing is one of the main attractions in Corralejo, however once you’ve done three hours of surfing in the morning I can understand you might want to do something not water based in the afternoon. 

There are tons of fun things you can do both in Corralejo and around Fuerteventura; the following are some of my favourites.

Explore the sand dunes of Corralejo Natural Park

Corralejo Natural Park covers 24km squared of sand dunes, volcanic rocks and pristine beaches. It’s a wild and beautiful area that you can explore on foot, cycling or driving.

We rented bikes from the Planet Surf house and cycled to the sand dunes. As we later found out cycling on sand is rather complicated so we just left our bikes by the side of the road and ventured on the dunes on foot.

This vast desert is very different from anything I had seen before, and we had lots of fun just wandering around and getting lost around the sand dunes.

Just make sure you remember where you left your bikes or car, the sand dunes all look very similar and you don’t want to lose them!

Do a day trip to Lobos Island

A short 15-minute boat trip from the main harbour of Corralejo is the island of Lobos. Lobos is a volcanic island comprised mostly of a largely uninhabited nature preserve that’s home to rare birds.

There are a two options for visiting Lobos Island; you can either get a water taxi and then explore the island alone or do an organised day trip.

You can book both directly in Corralejo; there are a huts all along the harbour and shops on the main street of Corralejo where you can book the day trip to Lobos and a number of other excursions around Fuerteventura.

We personally decided to take a water taxi and explore Lobos alone, since with 3 hours a day of surfing we never had a full day to do the organised day trip, plus we felt we already spent enough time in the water and didn’t want to do snorkelling which most of the tours included.

If you get a water taxi they will drop you off at a small harbour where they will also pick you up later in the day.

They will either have a pick up and drop off schedule (eg. every half hour) or you can arrange directly with the captain the pick up time.

There are clear paths that you can walk along on the island and signs that point you to all the main attractions on the island, with timings of how long it should take to get there.

We found these very helpful as it helped us decide how realistic or not it was to see something before our water taxi pick up. On Lobos there is also a small volcano that you can hike up.

We gave it a miss as we didn’t have enough time and didn’t feel like the view was going to be considerably different from the other smaller hills.

There isn’t much on Lobos Island but we found the desert island to have an almost eerie beauty to it, walking around alone with just the sound of waves and birds in the distance was a great way to disconnect from real life.

The town of Corralejo has one main shopping street surrounded by smaller streets dotted with bars and restaurants. 

The main street is perfect for some souvenir shopping on a cloudy day when you might not be hitting the beach.

All along the harbour you will also find cute bars and restaurants where you can sit outside to enjoy food and drinks with a sea view.

Quad biking on the sand dunes

We didn’t actually do this activity, but saw signs and shops everywhere in Corralejo offering it as an excursion.

Given our failed attempt at cycling on the sand dunes if you want to spend more on the dunes or see more of Corralejo Natural Park you might consider a quad bike instead. You can both rent one and go alone or book a tour.

Do a day trip to Lanzarote

We didn’t have the opportunity to do this either as it required a full day and we always had a half day of surfing scheduled.

However Lanzarote is a less than an hour ferry away, and easy to visit for a day. We saw in town shops offering both organised all-day excursions or just ferry tickets so that you can go alone and do your own thing.

Groups – and, crucially, surf groups – are famously small at this homegrown camp. You’ll be in the water every day with your instructor (the uber-friendly and highly capable Wilmer Acosta, no less) and just a few other people. That means you’ll get loads of attention and tips to get you improving as fast as possible.

The official schedule includes five surf lessons, but there’s a trump card in the mix: The 4×4 surf surfari. That’s the piece de resistance and what sets this camp apart from the crowd. Guests will be whisked over the rugged volcanic ridges on the north side of the island to look for secret spots. It’s super, super fun.

The camp itself is a proper Canarian villa with a few cottage-style rooms. They’re very private and each guest has one to themselves. That said, the vibe here is like being on holiday with friends. You’ll dine together, BBQ together, crack open beers together, and chat rubbish until late at night.

Second, the surf tuition is top quality. All instructors are fully qualified and sessions last a whopping four hours. They include transfers to and from surf spots plus all equipment (good equipment, too).

We especially love that you can tailor your classes to match your level, with increments going from total beginner up to 2.2 advanced intermediate – that’s more increments than most schools, and means more specialised training to focus in on the details.

We should also make special mention of the accommodation. It’s gorgeous. Built in classic Canarian style, it’s flooded with light and has half-indoor, half-outdoor spaces that tick all the boxes – from working to chilling. STUNNING. There’s no other word that can sum up the Dreamsea Surf House. It’s undoubtedly one of the highest-quality surf camps in Europe , let alone just this corner of the Canaries, but then again it is a brand that has pedigree all around the world (we’d say Dreamsea can lay claim to arguably the best surf camp in Bali!).

Rooms are toned-down, understated luxury. They’re done out with bamboo chairs and polished concrete, whitewashed walls and leafy houseplants. The whole lot spills out into a sun-kissed outdoor space where it’s a downright pleasure to sit with a Kindle under the shade of a palm and while away the hours between surf sessions.

We’d book this one as a standalone hotel and then add-on the surf lessons and rental as you go. The reason? It’s SOOO simple to do and you can properly curate your week. There are daily lessons to join if you want to, but also extra packages like surf-skate outings, and yoga mornings. We could wax lyrical about the quality of this one for hours. Ahhhh.

Line Up Fuerteventura

This female-only surf camp is a doozy for solo lady travelers who want to join likeminded folks on the waves of Fuereventura. It’s based out of the north of the island, which means the waves of both Corralejo and El Cotillo are on the menu. That adds great diversity, plus means you’ll be able to hit both easier and harder waves depending on your level.

The package is nicely padded out with loads of extras. They’re exactly the sort of thing you’d be on the hunt for if you’re looking to make new pals while learning to surf – think evening BBQs, hiking outings to lovely Lobos island, sunset volcano treks, and a whole load more.

Surfintrip Camp

If you’re after a small-group surf experience that offers personalized lessons then you could do a lot worse than Surfintrip Camp .

They operate out of a relatively bijou surf villa in northern Fuerteventura that can host just 10 people at any one time. Couple that with two dedicated surf instructors – both of them, perhaps a touch oddly, from the island of Sicily in Italia – and you start to see how it’s possible to really improve with the attention you get during this package.

We’re also impressed how long individual surf lessons last at Surfintrip. You’re looking at in excess of three hours in the water every day with focused tuition. That’s in comparison to around one to two hours in most mainstream branded camps.

The accommodation is chilled and comfy. It’s not a big hostel or dedicated surf hotel but rather a small Canarian villa with its own garden and pool. The sessions are tailored to really home in on individual aspects of your surfing that will add up to make a proper difference to your abilities by the end of the week – think paddle technique, take-off theory, and speed generation.

All the surf practice is run by the tried-and-tested Homegrown Surfschool . It’s one of the OGs of Fuerteventura, with years of hospitality behind them. The upshot? The guides know the island like the back of their hand, so there’s rarely a day when you’ll be caught out by a rogue swell direction. To put it another way: Guests here usually ride the better waves on the island.

If we had to pick a downside to the Homegrown Surfschool at Casa Hilda it would be the accommodation. Look: It’s great if you’re a budget backpacker and love the hostel scene. Just bear in mind that the facilities are a touch dated and the crowd is typically 18-30s. It’s not really the one for surfing couples or older surfers.

TAO Caleta Mar

• Price: 8 days/7 nights starting at $1028 (£855) per person or $1292 (£1074) per couple

The TAO Caleta Mar boutique hotel is the setting for this eight-day surfing package . That puts you smack dab on the Grandes Playa stretch south of Corralejo , within walking distance of oodles of beginner-level and intermediate-level breaks, but also just steps from some of the very best beaches on the island.

The location, plus the modern style of the hotel – think contemporary rooms, fast Wi-Fi, and a big pool (actually, it’s two pools!) and garden space – lends the whole thing a very family-friendly vibe.

That’s carried on through the tuition, too, which is semi-private thanks to group limits of six surfers and heavily weighted towards the novice end of the spectrum. It’s run by the well-rated Red Shark Surf School.

International Surf Camp ONLY SURF

Last but most certainly not least is this classic among surf camps in Fuerteventura.

Set right in the thick of the action in the town of Coralejo, International Surf Camp ONLY SURF has been drawing all levels of wave rider to its pad for some years now. It’s garnered a rep as one of the most chilled and fun-loving camps out there. Veterans say that the chill sessions between surf lessons are almost as good as the lessons themselves!

Optional daily outings can be booked on-site at reception after you arrive. There are different surf trips for different levels – the guides are well-versed in picking a beach that’s suited to your particular skill. Equipment is included for lessons but needs to be rented separately for free-surf sessions.

The good news is that the International Surf Camp ONLY SURF shouldn’t break the bank. It’s among the cheaper surf camps in Fuerte.

SURF TRIP GUIDE TO CORRALEJO

Corralejo is a former fishing village on the northern coast of Fuerteventura. It’s harbour is still a working port used by the local fishermen. Although it does attract many tourists there’s still plenty of good seafood restaurants, veggie restaurants, juice bars and tapas interspersed with the usual mainstream tourist affair. The buildings here are pretty low rise and the town is in the most part made up of a grid like system of roads. The main beach is pretty charming and its harbour is worth a visit. Corralejo is popular for a reason, it’s a good base for those looking to explore the area and surf. If you’re looking to explore by sea, the marina can take your  to Lanzarote, Lobos as well as the rest of the island.

Just to the south of town is the beautifully windswept Corralejo Natural Park, a protected area with miles of sandy dunes and beaches with the superb backdrop of Montana Roja volcano.

Where to eat

Where to sleep, getting around corralejo.

Getting around Corralejo is easy as it is fairly small. You can walk to most places within 30 minutes but if you need to you can take a taxi which are lined up on the main street in the town.

It’s useful to have car if you’re heading to Flag Beach or Glass Beach and the dunes of Corralejo Natural Park. If you taking surf lessons or are staying at a surf camp they will drive you to the surf spots.

There are a couple of sandy beaches in Corralejo, Playa Muelle Chico a small beach in the old town area and Playa La Goleta, a longer beach with bars, restaurants and water sports available. Both are pretty good options if you’re looking to soak up a few rays although Playa Muelle Chico is quite small Playa La Goleta is only a short walk down the coast.

Beaches just outside of Corralejo

Just outside of Corralejo are the stunningly beautiful Corralejo Dunes along with nine kilometres of beautiful beaches. The Grandes Playa de Corralejo is made up of many beaches in the Corralejo National Park with views out to sea of the islands of Los Lobos and Lanzarote.

At the north end you’ll find family friendly beaches with lifeguards and sunbeds whilst toward the south there are some nudist beaches with small coves for some privacy.

The surf spot of El Burro (Glass Beach) between Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario, it’s also popular with kite and wind surfers so avoid if it’s windy! Further north toward Corralejo is the surf spot, Flag Beach which like El Burro competes with kite and wind surfers for space in the water.

You can reach the Corralejo Natural Park and beach via FV-1 motorway, that has parking alongside. The area is quite big so it’s wise to plan which beach you want to visit before you get there. There are a couple of roundabouts that take you off the FV-1 to the hotels near the beach where you can park, but parking is limited.

Where to Unwind – Yoga

It’s really easy to find yoga classes in Corralejo as they are advertised absolutely everywhere! In fact, the real challenge is to pick one from all the options available: specialised studios, gyms, independent instructors, surf and yoga combo camps, retreats, etc.

The good news is you’re are guaranteed to find a class to suit all yogi levels and styles. Outdoor classes are naturally very popular and you should try them at least once while in the island. If you do not speak Spanish, no problemo! Most instructors will teach in English so all you need to do is to double check it before heading off to your chosen class.

Corralejo is a popular base in Fuerteventura for those seeking the perfect waves. It’s within easy reach of the beaches in the dunes of El Burro (Glass Beach) and Flag Beach as well as Rocky Point and many others.

Rocky Point, Corralejo

We stumbled across Rocky Point whilst wandering along the coastline through Corralejo, it’s just outside the centre and features a small sandy beach with rocky areas to either side. When we were there the was a surf camp lesson going on with newbie surfers in the water and practicing on the beach. The waves here break over a reef with a right hand wave nearest to the shore than the left. It can sometimes feel quite busy with all the beginners and surf camps doing lessons. The dangers to look out for at Rocky Point is the rocky reef bottom and the number of other newbies in the water.

Flag Beach, Corralejo

Flag Beach, also known as the Bajo Negro is around 2 kilometres from Corralejo and is a long sandy beach just beyond the dunes. It’s a popular spot for kite surfers and windsurfers as well as surfers along this stretch of water.  There’s a small beach bar and kite/windsurfing centre (Flag Beach Windsurf & Kitesurf Centre) where you can hire equipment or take lessons. The left and right have wave break over a sandy bottom with some stones at Flag Beach, surf booties are recommended.

VEGAN BREAKFAST LUNCH

H2O Juice Bar & Vegan Cafe was one of the first places we ate at in Corralejo and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a bright, airy cafe with a friendly, helpful owner. It’s tucked away in the corner of a square with some colourful tables outside if you want to sit in the sun. It’s got an easy going vibe and would be a perfect option for a spot breakfast or lunch.  They serve muffins, cakes, cookies as well as fruit salads for breakfast and burgers, salads and sandwiches for lunch.

We opted for a homemade pumpkin burger, but there were several other options. It was really tasty and I really loved the mayo/sauce on the burger. There’s also plenty of homemade salads and other snacks on the menu plus the must try smoothies. It’s definitely worth visiting even if you’re not a vegan!

Baobab – Juice Bar Casa Vegetariana

Some say there are more Italians living in Corralejo than local Spanish inhabitants and Baobab is run by a friendly Italian family that are passionate about fresh, ethically sourced, healthy vegan ingredients.

Baobab is a stylish little vegan restaurant with plenty of outdoor seating, some of which is covered to shelter from the wind. We only ordered a smoothie and cake but we really appreciated the attention to detail, the smoothies arrived each with individual labels and the cake was delicious too.

It’s a great option if you’re looking for a healthy spot of breakfast, lunch or even just a fresh juice. Baobab isn’t the cheapest option but the quality of its dishes shine through.

Citrus Cafe

COFFEE LUNCH DINNER

Citrus Cafe has a surf bar type of vibe and although it is situated just on the main strip it’s got a pretty chilled out feel to it. There’s an excellent garden terrace at the back, a great place relax.

Service tends to be friendly and pretty quick, I tried the nachos and jalapeño poppers and there are also plenty of vegetarian options on the menu. It gets bonus points for having free WiFi too.

VEGAN LUNCH DINNER

If you’re looking for a home made vegan burger, this is the place to go. The burgers are tasty and huge! If you like a bit of spice like me then go for the hot Sanchez sauce too. There are plenty of burger options (and sandwiches) that are made from scratch.

There’s a great selection of craft beers at Dr Sanchez and the owner took time to explain which ones were local and described them before I chose one. Good service and tasty burgers, especially the spicy option!

Even if you’re not a vegan it’s worth a visit. The best burger I’ve had for a while.

Apartamentos Dunas Club

We stayed at Dunas Club apartments as we wanted somewhere comfortable, quiet with the facilities to cook if we wanted. The apartments are clean, fairly with a nice pool area, gym and squash court. The staff on reception are lovely, helpful and like to have a chat. The apartments also have a bar, shop and restaurant if you fancy staying close to home. It’s only a short 10 minute walk from the centre of Corralejo, just the right distance to stretch the legs.

There’s parking on the street outside too, but is first come first served so you may need to park on one of the other streets. This was fairly easy though.

There’s a good supermarket just around the corner too (Supermercados Inpescasa).

It’s close to the harbour and the ferry to Lobos Island and Lanzarote. If you’re looking for more independence and a quiet spot whilst in Fuerteventura then Dunas Club is a decent option.

Billabong Surf Camp & School “Beach House” Surf Camp & School

The Billabong Surf Camp is sat right on Waikiki beach with sea views and just a few steps from the beach, it’s also fairly central so everything is your doorstep.

If you’re looking to spend as much time as you can in the water and making progress surfing then this is a good option. With great facilities and knowledgable stuff your surfing skills will improve in no time.

Planet Surfcamps Surf Camp & School

Planet Surfcamp is only about 200 metres from the beach and 500 metres from the nearest surf spot. It’s just south of the main streets of Corralejo. It’s essentially a hostel setup with some great facilities, think ping pong table, small pool and a pool table plus kitchen facilities and BBQ space. Meals aren’t provided so it’s self catering but there are plenty of supermarkets a short walk away.

Wave Rider Surf School

On the south side of Corralejo bay and right on the beach is the rustic surf themed Wave Rider Surf School villa. This place focuses on being a laid back and friendly place to stay with good self catering facilities, the rooms are simple but comfortable. The villa also has a nice decking area complete with a hot tub, perfect for chilling out after a hard days surfing!
