Trek 4300 (SG) review

Trek would probably win every test hands down if options were the main selling points. The 4300 is available in 13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21, 22.5 and 24in frame sizes. There's a £370 disc brake-equipped version too.

Look slightly up and down the range and you find an array of other numbered models with remarkably little to set them apart to the untrained eye. So, given that the 4300 looks like a steal for £300, we set out to find its strengths and weaknesses.

The chassis

We really like Trek entry-level frames - a few years ago, frames of this quality would have cost £300 without the rest of the bike. The butted aluminium tubes exhibit the features and fine detail you normally only find at much higher prices. We really like the bi-axially ovalised, hydroformed down tube and curvy wishbone seatstays.

There's also loads of mud room and useful features like rack mounts on the seatstays, two sets of bottle cage bosses and a big stack of stem height adjustment spacers. There are hose guides and brackets for disc brakes if you fancy upgrading, but the £370 disc version would be a better bet if you're that way inclined.

Inevitably at this price, the geometry is dead neutral and casually sporty rather than race influenced. The RST Gila fork provides a plush 80mm (3.1in) of travel, with very effective preload dials on top of the legs - useful if you're heavy, or if lots of your riding is on the road. Like most forks on bikes at this price, rebound damping is almost nonexistent and there's a thunk every time the fork re-extends quickly.

We had a few chain skipping problems with the SR Suntour crankset on the first ride: almost every time a lot of pressure was applied, typically on bumpy climbs, the chain slipped off the middle ring, once resulting in an unwelcome dive over the bar. We come across this occasionally on new bikes and we can't quite work out what causes it.

It seems to be something to do with new chains lifting slightly on new chainring teeth, and it rarely happens beyond the first ride. After this bedding-in period, the drivetrain was fine.

The distinct click shifts of Shimano's eight-speed budget combi shifters make them as beginner-friendly as anything on the market; they performed without fault with the Shimano Alivio gear mechs.

While disc brakes appeal to many riders looking at £300 bikes, we still tend to recommend rim brakes. They're lighter and they make price room for other more important parts upgrades. Also, they perform well enough unless you're regularly riding in very muddy conditions.

Most of the other finishing parts are Bontrager-tagged. The high-rise stem and low-rise 25in Crowbar handlebar work well together, the dual-compound grips are comfortable and the saddle is tough and comfy enough.

A long seatpost allows riders up to just over 6ft to fit the 18in bike. There's a decent set of wheels too: tough Bontrager Camino rims are laced to a Shimano rear hub and a no-name front model. The tyres are Bontrager's fast-rolling but grippy (in all but slippery mud) Connection Trail 2in treads.

We'd been hammering the Marin Northside Trail just before setting off on the 4300, and the Trek, at £200 less, was a bit of a surprise. It feels instantly faster than the Marin - well, it does on the way to the trails.

Its 12.8kg (28.4lb) weight and fast-rolling centre-ridge tyres means that on the road, on steady trails or on climbs, it's the fastest bike in this test. It's only when the going gets rough that it starts to feel a little out of its depth, and even then it's surprisingly good.

As with all £300 bike packages, it's the fork that sets the bike's limitations. Although a suspension fork allows you to hit stuff harder and faster than you would with a rigid fork, it starts to become a bit of a handful over a series of hard-edged bumps. This is because the untamed rebound comes through to the bar, so you need to keep your arms loose to absorb the aftermath of hits rather than the hits themselves. Once you get used to the fork's limitations, you'll learn to love the way the 4300 rides, though.

The handling is just the way it should be - conservatively neutral - and there's tons of ride position adjustment potential - the ideal confidence boost for relative beginners.

Fantastic frame

Trek's size and resulting buying power allows them to build their lower budget bikes with excellent frames. It's unusual to see frames this good on £300 bikes, and it's worth bearing in mind if you see yourself upgrading kit at a later date. As always at this price, a fork with proper rebound damping would be the biggest improvement in performance terms.

Tesla Cybertruck owner gets quoted over $30,000 for Powershare installation

A Tesla Cybertruck owner has been quoted over $30,000 for a Powershare installation to enable his electric pickup truck to power his house.

When Tesla unveiled the production version of the Cybertruck late in the year, the automaker finally confirmed it was its first bi-directional charging-capable vehicle.

The feature allows Cybertruck owners to use the battery pack in trucks for more than just driving the vehicle. They can power virtually anything from the outlets in the bed of the vehicle, even another electric vehicle.

But through Tesla’s new Powershare product, Tesla Cybertruck owners can also power their homes in case of an outage.

The company previously said that Powerwall owners already have the required hardware to use the feature, and if not, you can use Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector ($595) and a Gateway ($1,800). Thought the automaker also unveiled a new ‘ Powershare Mobile Connector ’.

For Cybertruck Foundation series buyers, Tesla offers this hardware for free and for Cyberbeast Foundation series buyers, the automaker offers $4,000 toward installation , but we warned it could be much more expensive.

However, we didn’t expect it to be about 10 times more expensive, but that’s exactly what a Cybertruck owner was quoted.

Joe Tegtmeyer, a Cybertruck owner better known for his drone flyovers of Gigafactory Texas, shared his quote to install Tesla Powershare at his house:

I wanted to provide an honest follow-up on the costs that may be incurred to install Powershare equipment that comes with the Cybertruck Foundation Series purchase. He is being quoted $64,275, but that’s with 2 Powerwalls to be fair. For the cost of enabling Powershare alone without Powerwalls, Tegtmeyer is being quoted $33,837.50 by installer Treehouse.

The insane pricing is due to suspicious $24,000 upgrade to increase the power input into the house:

It’s unclear why you would need to increase the power input into your house to get backup power? Couldn’t you just backup what you already have?

Tegtmeyer was surprised by the quote as he recently had electrical upgrades for his home solar panel installation:

I had thought Powershare might be a viable option for me, especially since I already had a huge solar panel system & all related electrical upgrades including a completely new main circuit-breaker panel & new heavy-duty wiring included as part of my solar system installation. I had thought this would make the Powershare installation easier, but apparently, that is not the case.

A quote like that will certainly change your plans.

Seems overly complex for the rare times you may need additional backup power. I'm happy just running an extension cord from my CT to the fridge and whatever else requires 120v to start like a gas hot water heater. Now if you could sell power to the grid during an outage for a profit, folks may be tempted to light candles on purpose.

The easy solution is to get another quote, but that can be difficult as you have to go through a Tesla-approved installer and not many have been approved for Powershare yet.

Electrek’s Take

Now, this could be an isolated case, but I feel like it won’t be. It reminds me of the early days of Powerwall when buyers were being given crazy installation quotes when Tesla started working with third parties.

The whole idea of Powershare and bidirectional charging is that it is a cheaper way to get backup power because you already have the battery in your vehicle. The electrical hardware and installation cost are the difference makers.

It looks like Tesla has the hardware under control, but it might need to control the installation cost by working with installers.

AI and Machine Creativity: How Artistic Production Is Changing

A recent AI at Wharton webinar offered glimpses into the profound ways in which AI is changing creative content.

Boston University information systems professor Dokyun Lee can’t wait to get his hands on an Apple Vision Pro.

The recently released $4,000 spatial computer allows users to navigate online content with their eyes, hands, and voice, effectively blending their physical and digital worlds through a futuristic headset.

“I’m looking forward to a text-to-world model just like Star Trek,” he said. “I want the holodeck.”

Perhaps he can compare notes with Yannick Exner , a doctoral researcher in digital marketing at the Technical University of Munich, who said his Vision Pro order was on the way.

Their fearless embrace of an AI-integrated future is evident in their research, which they shared during a webinar hosted by AI at Wharton to showcase emerging knowledge in the field. Streamed live in February, the webinar focused on “AI and Machine Creativity.”

Wharton marketing professor Robert Meyer hosted the hourlong webinar that also featured Ankit Sisodia , a Purdue University marketing professor who specializes in the use of machine learning and AI for business applications. (Watch video below.)

The guest scholars offered glimpses into the profound ways in which AI is changing everything.

“What we learned is that people have a similar perception of AI-generated content with human-generated content,” Exner said.

His co-authored paper, “ The Power of Generative Marketing: Can Generative AI Reach Human-level Visual Marketing Content ,” compared how people responded to human-made versus synthetic images. In the study, AI-generated images outperformed human-made images on perception, were comparable on social media engagement, and achieved significantly higher click-through rates.

Sisodia developed a method to discover and quantify human-interpretable visual characteristics directly from image data. His co-authored paper, “ Generative Interpretable Visual Design ,” explores ways to use deep machine learning to find interesting product attributes, and then use those to generate new products that will resonate with consumers.

“We know that visual design matters for consumer choices,” he said.

Lee’s co-authored paper, “ Generative AI, Human Creativity, and Art ,” examines the ability of text-to-image AI to help humans create high-quality digital art. Using a dataset of more than 4 million artworks by more than 50,000 users, the study found that text-to-image AI enhanced creative productivity by 25% and the art’s value by 50% over time. The key takeaway is that AI-assisted artists experience more creativity and value, producing more content ideas and more art that is favorably evaluated.

“It’s great as a brainstorming tool,” Lee said.

Balancing AI with Human Creativity

The scholars agreed that AI has almost boundless potential to affect human creativity. As Meyer noted, today’s art is far better than the primitive drawings on cave walls. “Not that cave art was bad, but it was very limited because there were limited tools to produce it,” he said.

Exner wondered whether humanity will reach some point of diminished return with AI, because the models are built and trained on human knowledge. What happens if people start relying too much on the models and engage less in novel thinking?

Lee countered, “When photography came, art did not die. I feel like we’re going to have the same sort of impact, at least on the creative side. But I agree with Yannick in terms of what might happen to the knowledge base, where people might not be motivated to contribute, and the models don’t have anything to learn from after a while.”

Meyer said the notion of AI’s self-extinction would make a great sci-fi movie, but like the panelists, he’d rather hold out for the Apple Vision Pro. “I have it on my birthday list for a present my wife will get me, I hope,” he said with a smile.

(Pulaski, PA)...It was a busy weekend for the various Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Racing Series presented by Born2Run Lubricants divisions. Kyle Hardy stole the headlines scoring a $4,000 payday in RUSH Late Model City Chevrolet Weekly Series action at Winchester Speedway as he was one of six drivers to score their first RUSH Late Model wins of the season! In addition, Chas Wolbert (Sportsman Modifieds), Zan Harvey (Pro-Mods) and Kaden Michael (Stock Cars) added to their win totals. Female racer Chelsie Gallagher scored a popular fourth career RUSH Sportsman Modified win on Saturday at Pittsburgh.

RUSH Late Model action at Raceway 7 saw Billy Henry, Jr. lead the entire distance of the 20-lap main event to score his second win of the season. Fifth place starter Breyton Santee worked his way to a second place finish with Jim Rasey coming home third. Colby Beighey was fourth with RUSH Sportsman Modified graduate Joe Watson recording his career best finish.

Ed Carley led the opening laps of RUSH Late Model action at the McKean County Raceway opener, but Jeremy Wonderling capitalized on a small bobble by Carley to take over the lead and go one to score the $1,000 victory in the 20-lap non-stop event. Carley came home second with Chuck LeFleur claiming third over Jake Wilber and Dusty Waters.

Also on Friday night, Mike Laughard scored the victory at Dog Hollow Speedway to become the first repeat winner in RUSH Late Model City Chevrolet Weekly Series action at the track. Last week’s winner Marino Angelicchio settled for second with Cale Schwartzmiller coming home a career best third. Scott Stein and Colin Casale finished four and fifth, respectively.

Saturday evening at Winchester Speedway, Jared Powell and Jacob Whitt battled during the opening laps of the RUSH Late Model main event while seventh place starter Kyle Hardy worked his way to the third position. Powell stayed out front while Whitt and Hardy battled for second with Hardy winning that battle on lap seven. The caution flag flew a lap later and on the ensuing restart Hardy used the top side of the speedway to try and take the lead from Powell. Hardy won the battle for the top spot on lap 11 and by lap 17 had built up a full straightaway lead. Several cautions slowed the field in the closing stages of the 35-lap main event, but each time racing action resumed Hardy pulled away from the field. At the checkered it was Hardy scoring the $4,000 victory in the “Tribute to the Legend Buddy Armel” event for his first win of the season. Davin Kaiser overtook Powell in the closing stages to claim second. Shaun Wetzel and Travis Campbell completed the top five.

Veteran racer Ed Carley and Austin Hauser led the field to the green at Genesee Speedway. Carley weathered several cautions and used the bottom of the speedway to easily defeat Hauser for his first victory since 2015 and first ever in a RUSH Late Model. An emotional Carley, who was subbing for his son, Zach, stated in victory lane, “I didn’t expect none of this. I expected to come and represent our sponsors.” Dave Dubois finished third with Jon Rivers fourth and Bill Holmes fifth.

Steve Peeden made the trek from Martinsville, Indiana to Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio a profitable one on Saturday as he scored the victory and a $1,000 payday. Peeden, who was making his first ever RUSH Late Model start, led the entire distance to defeat Kyle Lukon by just 0.133 seconds to become the third different winner from three different states in as many City Chevrolet Weekly Series events this season. Opening night winner, Logan Reed, was third over 3C Graphix Futures Cup driver Lincoln Smith, and Breyton Santee. Muskingum's counts have risen each event and the RUSH Late Models will return to MCS on Thursday, June 13 with Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

Second place starter Jake Gunn led the first four circuits in RUSH Late Model action At Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway before Brandon Burgoon took the lead. Burgoon, who was making just his second start of the season, went on to dominate the event and win by a full straightaway. Brian Huchko was a career best RUSH Late Model finish of second as Zach Gunn, Ben Policz and Daryl Charlier rounded out the top five. Kyle Zimmerman would lead the first nine circuits at Stateline Speedway on Saturday night before Jason Genco used the top of the speedway to grab the lead. Genco went on to lead the final 11 laps to score his first win of 2024. Zimmerman settled for second with David Parker third. Jake Wilber and Randy Hall completed the top five. Saturday night RUSH Late Model action at Tyler County Speedway saw Ryan Hare hold off veteran Kyle Thomas to score his second consecutive RUSH Late victory at the West Virginia oval. Michael Moreland, Allen Clark, and Blake Runyon completed the top five.

Woodhull Raceway had two RUSH Late Model main events on their racing card. The first feature event was the rain out from May 4. John Waters held off teammate Steve LeBarron to claim his third straight victory of the season at the southern tier New York oval. Austin Allen, Brett Marlatt and Marshall O’Brian rounded out the top five. In the nightcap, Waters and LeBarron led the field to the green, but it was second generation competitor Brett Marlatt who took command of the main event and held off LeBarron for his first victory of the season. Austin Allen tallied his second third place finish of the evening with Rickie Loucks and Patrick Parker completing the top five.

Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Sportsman Modified competitors started their weekend off at Raceway 7 for a Wedge Motorsports "Route 7 Rumble" Series event on Friday evening. JC Boyer and Chas Wolbert led the field to the green with Wolbert immediately taking the top spot. The Warren, OH driver went on to score a 0.638 second victory over Rob Kristyak to tally his second consecutive win at the Conneaut, OH oval. Kole Holden, Bill Cunningham, and Boyer completed the top five.

Saturday evening at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway lady racer Chelsie Gallagher dominated the 15-lap main event to score her first victory of 2024 and fourth overall of her career. Kole Holden settled for second with third generation competitor Karston King claiming a career best third. Jacob Jordan and Lucas Canon finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Pro Mod competitors competed in two events this past weekend with Zain Harvey picking up both wins. Friday evening at McKean County Raceway Harvey took the lead from Al Brewer on lap three and went on to score the win. Josh Wilcox, Jeremy Wonderling, Brewer, and Josh Canfield followed.

Saturday in the division's season opener at Stateline Speedway, Harvey would come from the tail after bringing out an early race caution,to pass Wilcox on the final turn of the final lap to pick up his second checkered flag of the weekend. Veterans Al Brewer and Dennis Lunger, Jr. came home in third and fourth. Vaughn Nystrom was fifth in his 2024 debut. Kaden Michael continued his winning ways as he tallied two victories this week upping his total to three for the season for the 2023 3C Graphix Futures Cup Champion. Michael was victorious at McKean County Raceway in the division's debut at the East Smethport, Pa. track on Friday and also picked up the win on Saturday in their debut at Hummingbird Speedway n Reynoldsville, Pa. Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH racing action at Eriez Speedway, Tri-City Raceway Park and Bradford Speedway was cancelled due to the weather.

This weekend it’s a double header for the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Dirt Late Model Flynn’s Tire/Gunter’s Honey Touring Series as they will be in action Friday at McKean County Raceway and on Saturday at Marion Center Raceway. Both events will pay $3,000 to win.

Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Late Model City Chevrolet Weekly Series action is scheduled at Genesee Speedway on Thursday. Friday’s racing action includes Dog Hollow Speedway and Raceway 7. Saturday evening RUSH Late Model weekly action is scheduled at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, Stateline Speedway, Tyler County Speedway, and Woodhull Raceway. RUSH Late Model action will also take place at Eriez Speedway on Sunday.

The Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Racing Series presented by Born2Run Lubricantsreturn to action with an $800 to win event at Marion Center Raceway Saturday before completing the weekend at Tri-City Raceway Park on Sunday. Sharon Speedway will then host an $800 to-win Sunbelt Rentals Weekly Series event on Wednesday, June 12 part of Ohio Sprint Speedweek. Billy's Garage is the divisional sponsor at Sharon.

The lone Hovis RUSH Sportsman Modified event for the weekend is scheduled at Raceway 7 on Friday evening.

RUSH Stock Car action is slated for Freedom Motorsports Park on Saturday and Eriez Speedway on Sunday.
