Born on June 26th 1956, Chris Issak is a singer songwriter from Stockton California, best known for his distinctive guitar playing, which adorns the hit single, “Wicked Game”.

Hailing from Stockton, California, Isaak had an impressive run at school, being the class president for three years, and winning the Student Body President in his senior year. He was also the valedictorian. At the University of the Pacific, he earned himself a bachelor’s degree in communications graduating 1981.

Signing to Warner Bros. Records in 1984, Isaak led with the debut single “Dancin” which was also his debut music video too. It was from his debut album “Silvertone” that spawned the other singles “Gone Ridin” and “Livin’ for Your Lover”, both of which were featured in the movie, Blue Velvet. Isaak was fortunate enough to have his contract renewed in 1988, as he moved to another division of Warner Bros. called Reprise Records. It was the following year that Isaak released his song “Wicked Game”, from the album, “Heart Shaped World” released in June 1989. The song reached the top twenty of nine different countries whilst the album went on to be certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA. It peaked at number 7 on the Billboard 200. From the following album, “San Francisco Days”, released April 13th 1993, until his release “Always Got Tonight”, released February 12th 2002, Isaak’s albums were an international chart success. As was his album “Beyond the Sun”, which was released on October 18th 2011.

That’s not it though, as Isaak was the composer behind the theme song of The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. He even starred in his own television show, The Chris Isaak Show, which aired from March 2001 until March 2004.

Live reviews

Chris Isaak is hot, sexy, and talented. Did I mention he's an amazing live performer? He is the entire package! Mr. Isaak gets the crowd involved. He is personable and acts like he is talking to you.

I have seen him from small indoor clubs to large outdoor venues and he sounds amazing in all settings. He gets the crowds energized. Chris get personal with the people, shakes hands, sits on laps, takes photos, and does small talk. Who does that these days?? What a guy! I love when he sings the classics......Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. No other performer can pull that off. I think his Pretty Women is just as good as the original. His best live performance is Great Balls of Fire. I love his music too especially San Francisco Days, Somebody's Crying, and Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing. Chris Isaak would be a perfect Vegas performer! People will come all over the world to see him because he's that good.

Let me finish by saying that you will not be disappointed when seeing a Chris Isaak show since he is very entertaining and has an amazing live voice. One more thing......awesome costumes.

Chris Isaak and his band have been together for something close to 30 years. Their unique blend of rockabilly, country and blues still sounds great. They are such a well-oiled machine that even their deviations from the script are routine for them. That said, it's far from a by-the-numbers show. The set list includes his big hits like "Wicked Game" and "Baby Did A Bad, Bad Thing," covers of his hero, Roy Orbison, as well as Elvis and Merle Haggard, and songs off of his new album. But, really, when you go to his concert, you're there for the show. And the show is mostly him. He's personable and funny and he makes sure he gets the crowd with him from the get-go with his banter with the band. His frequent self-deprecating digressions in-between songs. And, on this occasion, his foray into the crowd itself, walking the aisles, jumping seats and taking selfies with the fans. You'll never walk out of a Chris Isaak concert and say that you didn't get your money's worth.

BEST CONCERT EVER!!! Chris Isaak was amazing! Not only did he perform his own songs, but also did some Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis! The way he interacted with the crowd made it feel like you were there with a friend. He even went out into the audience and talked to people. He was so personable, friendly, and very very funny! And his voice-simply amazing. Sounds exactly like his albums-pure talent. I would go see him over and over again. My friends and I are going to be talking about this concert for a long time! And I've been to plenty of concerts-there is no one I would recommend more than the pure joy and love you feel watching this man perform.

Fantastic, very entertaining show. I have seen Chris three times before and I think he was even better this time. Even more energy and great musicianship. He seems to have expanded his vocal range, if that is possible. In addition he is a very funny guy and did a number of observations about the audience being full of Texans at an Oklahoma casino. The band was top notch as always and the sound quality was great. He has so many great songs they can't fit them on one concert, but he does the expected favorites and then some. Everybody should make a point of catching a Chris Isaak show. Lots of fun.

My friend and I can honestly say that we were probably the only people there under the age of thirty! But none the less we LOVED IT. Such a great atmosphere. Such good vibes. We boogied the night away! He played so many classics. And although he was slightly before my time music is good music. The entire band put on a phenomenal show. Dressed in dazzling suits they surpassed my expectations of how well they would play. Highly suggested show on my behalf.

I have been a fan for may years. It brought my now wife together when we dated as we both love his music. First time seeing him live. It was a rush when he first opened. Wish we could have shook his hand. It rained a little, but it never bothered us, lol. 1.5 hrs was a little short listing to him and the band. And no Encore.... shame on him. But it was fun!

Chris Isaak is not only a great singer, song writer and musician but he is still one of the greatest entertainers of all time!

Who knew a kid from Stockton could turn out to be ...well, Chris Isaak!

There is a reason his fellow musicians stay with him and that his fan base is so diverse.

Love, love, love you Chris!

nononsense8888’s profile image

I always enjoy his show, I've seen 6 or 7 over the years. This show was pretty mellow, no audience women on stage or Chris making it through the crowd. I love hearing the oldies, but with so many albums there's no way to get everyone's favorites. It seemed short I guess, but he came out on time.

First off, Chris Isaak is great.

He put on a helluva show.

Two hours of incredibly well choreographed rock and roll.

Repertoire of amazing range.

So damned talented.

Great songwriter.

Not to mention the sparkle suit and the mirror suit.

RUN to see him!

Good show but unfortunately cancelled after 35 minutes due to lightening and rain storm. It was an outside venue. Otherwise it was looking to be an entertaining show. We drove 400 miles there and back to see Chris. My wife was very disappointed.

Isaak does justice to some beloved holiday standards. His cover of Chuck Berry’s “Run Run Rudolph” (titled “Run Rudolph Run” on the album) remains faithful to the original, hard-rocking version. His take on the normally upbeat “Winter Wonderland” creates a slow, shimmering ode to winter romance. The album closes with a moving rendition of “O Holy Night,” a suggestion by the album’s producer, Dave Cobb, who worked with Isaak in Nashville’s RCA Studio.

But Isaak bucked the tradition of covering someone else’s holiday songs and wrote eight out of the album’s 13 tracks. “When I’m writing [holiday songs] I’m thinking about — now, this doesn’t sound like me, but it’s me — I actually picture a family sitting around and listening to the thing. I hope that it’ll be something they can all listen to. And it’s kind of enough upbeat energy that they can put it in the background while they’re eating dinner and they can have their argument at the table and say, ‘Turn up the music,’ you know?”

“That song will not be a hit,” Isaak continues. “But somewhere in America, there will be somebody who gets a nativity scene stolen, and their friend will go, ‘Hey, there’s a song for you.’”

LIVE REVIEW: CHRIS ISAAK With Special Guests ThornBird & Mark Seymour and the Undertow

Kings park, perth wa - 4th april 2024.

6 April 2024 Stephanie Jewell

The stage was set at Kings Park for an idyllic and serene evening, as crowds milled around on the grass and found their seats to settle in for Chris Isaak in concert.

chris isaak tour setlist

The first support for the evening was ThornBird , a band that was born out of the pandemic. Vikki Thorn, one third of popular folk-rock trio The Waifs, brought her band of West Australian locals along to delight the crowd, introducing them all as though they were old friends meeting new friends, the audience. ThornBird began singing their beautiful pop blues melodies as the sunset orange clouds rolled lazily by in the late afternoon sun. It was what could be described as a perfect Perth evening. All of the members were smiling the entire time, as Thorn’s vocals rang out. By the time ThornBird’s set had finished, you truly felt like you had just caught up with friends that you had known for a lifetime.

Mark Seymour and the Undertow hit the stage next, warming up the crowd in anticipation of Chris Isaak who was still to come. Of former Hunters and Collectors fame, Mark Seymour’s vocals soared above the crowds and into the canopies of trees above. They played songs about life, of love and of dusty, long, red dirt roads on tour in the far north of Western Australia’s outback towns. It is easy to see why Seymour is one of the most established and celebrated musical story tellers of our time as the visual imagery paired perfectly with the tone of the guitars and the drum licks. Mark Seymour and the Undertow truly threw their arms around the crowd and got everyone up out of their seats grooving along as they played classic Aussie banger tracks such as Holy Grail, Do You See What I See and ended on classic ballad Throw Your Arms Around Me. If you are a fan of Midnight Oil, Tex Perkins or The Aints, you will enjoy Mark Seymour and the Undertow.

Setlist: The Boxer, Holy Grail, Westgate, Joanna, Cry In The Rain, Say Goodbye, Cherry Red, Lorelei, Dogs Of Williamstown, Do You See What I See, Throw Your Arms Around Me

We come to the main event as Chris Isaak and his band, Silvertone, took to the stage, his first time singing on West Australian shores since 2016. This part of the review comes with a fair warning: Isaak is so damn charming and charmed the pants off the entire audience.

Isaak, with his hair slicked back, came out in a pale blue suit to match his baby blue eyes, the glistening jewels matching the stars sparkling above in the night sky. Those stars couldn’t outshine the brightest one of all though, as Isaak performed to the crowd, starting with his hit Somebody’s Cryin’. Nobody was crying except those who missed out on the chance to see Isaak swoon the crowd with his charm. The audience were enchanted by his voice and swept up by the sweet, beautiful music before them.

chris isaak tour setlist

Isaak took the night up a notch, stepping down from the stage and taking a journey through the very surprised crowd, to the amusement of all who were there. Ever the nice guy, Isaak sang, hugged, high-fived, and handshake’d fans on his way around the audience and back to the stage, never missing a single note of Don’t Leave Me On My Own. He worked his magic through the many anecdotes he told throughout the evening, his cheeky sense of humor unmistakable. He told of how a fire marshal had said to him during rehearsal not to do some things during a certain song, and Isaak asked if it was a fire hazard and the fire marshal had replied that it was just no good. He mused further that Rowley and Hershel had been working hard on a two-step and that while it was no Taylor Swift level performance with impeccable costumes and dancing, that his guys do things from the heart. He joked that this isn’t that, but they were going to do it anyway. And sure enough, soon the guitarists were two-stepping and spinning their way across the stage, charming the crowd and not missing a beat.

chris isaak tour setlist

The mood was set with a spotlight as the Californian crooner slowed the pace down and sang Wicked Game. It was slow and beautiful, and perfectly delivered straight into the hearts of all who were there. Isaak’s magic continued with daring to play a Hank Marvin song, who was present in the audience. The bouncing bass lines of Pretty Woman picked up the pace as Isaak’s hypnotic voice made all the women in the audience feel like we, too, were pretty. A quick guitar swap saw the melancholic Forever Blues come true, with Isaak telling the crowd that if you like unrequited love songs and sad ballads that you have come to the motherload, because he loves singing that sad stuff.

Two Hearts saw another anecdote shared by Isaak of how he loved this time of day, and loved what he does performing on stage. He told us how he was born into show business because his dad drove a forklift so straight away, he had those connections (to the laughter and cheers of the crowd). Isaak truly has a way with words be it in his music, or the way he shares his heart, soul, and life with the audience through anecdotes. He told how the music he loved in his life is magical because he loved artists like Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis and Hank Marvin and then he got to play with them. These influences definitely shined through in his songs and the way he held himself lyrically throughout.

chris isaak tour setlist

The audience were in for a treat as Isaak launched into a cover of Roy Orbison’s Only The Lonely. With his voice was like a velvet massage after a long day. How can musical notes and lyrics carry so much emotion, and at the same time convey so much emotion? That’s a question I spent much of the evening musing over as love song, sappy ballad and heart break hits were played one after the other. His hilarious sense of humour continued throughout the night as Isaak said if you’re here with someone special then at least they brought you a ticket, and if you’re by yourself then maybe think about why. This led into his rendition of Elvis’ hit Can’t Help Fallin’ In Love, as couples all around me held each other close, entwined in each other’s embrace. More hits followed, as the crowd continued to adore Isaak and be captivated by his charming sense of humour.

chris isaak tour setlist

There was no sound quality difference between a recording and this live performance of Isaak, he sounded just as good as what you can hear on a record, except better because it was live and accompanied by his blue sparkly suit. He has still got it, more than 4 decades after his musical journey began, and he continues to still have it, that absolute pure magic. Isaak ended the night with a bang on Big Wide Wonderful World before returning to the stage to the raucous cheers of the audience. This time, he had done a quick outfit change to trade his baby blue suit for black disco. It was an even sparklier suit, and I really did not know it was possible to outsparkle himself, but he did it. This outfit was a black suit covered in disco ball mirrors. There was no missing where he was as he outshone the stars above and launched into Baby Did A Bad, Bad Thing. This was followed by his sensual sultry keys-heavy number, Can’t Do A Thing, that you might expect to hear in a cigar lounge. The night ended with Isaak bringing up his drummer Kenney to sing harmonies with him on The Way Things Really Are, a purely spectacular number, to end a purely spectacular night. If you like Elvis, Roy Orbison, Talking Heads or Jeff Buckley then you will love and adore Chris Isaak.

Chris Isaak

MFC, Wellington

Monday, April 22

This first time I saw Chris Isaak was in 1995. I was new to Wellington, in fact it was the very first time I attended a concert by myself; bought a front-row, centre ticket. And just completely loved the whole experience. I was a fair weather fan back then, I loved Wicked Game , and the new album of the time which had some bangers — including Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing . But that show won me over, made me a fan, such was Chris’ charisma and conviction, his charm, his craft, his silliness, and his wonderful commitment to the bit. He deeply cares about performing. I met him and his drummer Kenney after the show, got their autographs, and was just generally starstruck and in awe. I took away the setlist, signed. Still have it even:

chris isaak tour setlist

So. I say all of that. And yet, I was on the fence about whether I truly needed to see Isaak again, and then I reviewed this bootleg CD of essentially the gig I saw , same setlist anyway, and that was me won over again, and I had to go…

Chris Isaak: One Night Stand

Chris Isaak: One Night Stand

Chris Isaak One Night Stand Firefly I love Chris Isaak, and often think about the gig I saw: 1995 — I had just moved to Wellington, first time out on my own, and one of my favourite musicians of recent years was touring. I booked a ticket, front row, centre, on my own. I was still just a teen. And it was an amazing experience. I met him after the show and …

I’m so glad I went .

Sounds Good! is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

It was all at once exactly the same — in the very best way — and of course it was different. He’s older, so am I. The crowd was different, the venue was next door to the one where I saw him last time. There’s a few new tunes. And a lot of older cover versions. And all of it was just so charming.

Isaak came out in his Nudie Suit, all class as always. And by the third song he was out and circulating through the crowd with a wireless mic, mugging for photos and cracking jokes. We’d already heard him croon Somebody’s Crying , so that country lilt and his version of the high-lonesome was still in place. And his band has been a working unit for close to 40 years now. So joining Isaak and drummer/backing vocalist Kenney Dale Johnson, as always, was the rest of the Silvertones: Rowland Salley (bass/backing vocals), Timothy Drury (keys/backing vocals) Hershel Kershel Yatovitz (guitar/backing vocals).

This band sits nicely in the mid-point of the honky-tonk and good old rock’n’roll, serving up lovely covers of Roy Orbison ( Pretty Woman ) and Elvis ( Can’t Help Falling in Love ) and allowing Isaak to stretch across the many shades of balladry ( Don’t Leave Me On My Own , Forever Blue ) and rockabilly ( Blue Hotel , Bad Thing ) that form the basis of his songwriting. He’s in service to the sounds of his childhood, and the music he was raised on. And when he covers Orbison’s Only The Lonely it comes with the story that The Big O was the headliner that gave Chris and his Silvertones a real foot up, and was friends with the band across the final years of his life.

Share Sounds Good!

If Isaak wasn’t a great singer and performer, he’d still win most people over with his banter, and his ability to control the vibe and flow of an evening. But of course that boy can sing. And so when he drops Wicked Game barely more than a half-dozen songs in , as he did when I saw him in ‘95, it’s probably a way of controlling the narrative away from any thoughts of being a One-Hit-Wonder, or someone propped up by a song used in so many films. The song has no doubt been of huge benefit in many ways, but in no way is it going to be a set-closing albatross. Nor is it ever tossed out lightly. The straight rendering of it has a hundred or more iPhones out in force to capture this version (and miss the real magic, and never watch it again, but no matter).

Midway through the set, Kenney joins him up front on a single snare drum and brushes and as well as the Elvis and Orbison songs, we get a lovely Two Hearts .

Throughout the set, Isaak jokes and quips, is generous with his praise for the band, and gives them plenty of spots to solo (Drury and Yatovitz), to dance and folly (Salley) to just generally be his foil (Kenney). But there’s also something magic about the friendship and vocal duetting between Kenney and Chris and the final song of the night, The Way Things Really Are , was genuinely lovely.

chris isaak tour setlist

I just dig the fact that, ahead of that, Isaak never seemed to ever take himself too seriously, but paid absolute respect to the craft; he definitely takes what he does seriously. It’s an extraordinary performance in fact, something they just don’t teach anymore, something you barely ever see anymore, and it’s an art that’s dying out — the all-around entertainer. It would also all fall over if the songs were flimsy, and they just aren’t. They’re loaded with hooks, and great ideas, and they bounce along so perfectly as to be almost a full set of highlights. Obviously Baby Did A Bad Thing is a fun encore, even allowing some audience members onto the stage for a dance. Obviously, every song I’ve mentioned was great — but there were more besides . And not one dud. Or if there was, Chris was probably able to sweep it up with a funny joke, and the band played through it with such aplomb that you’d just never really remember after whether there was anything in the way of the very good time they lovingly served.

Total class act. So thrilled I stumped up and went again.
