Brightline, an eco-friendly, high-speed train company, has been changing how people live, work, and play in Florida since it launched its first high-speed train service in 2018 between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Soon after, it expanded to downtown Miami. Then, in December 2022, it opened stations in Aventura and Boca Raton, two upscale—and traffic-heavy—resort and shopping destinations in dire need of public transportation.

On September 22, 2023, Brightline began service between its five south Florida stations—Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach—to America’s theme park capital, Orlando.

The privately-funded, multi-billion-dollar rail service whisks passengers up to 130 mph between its hub cities on tricked-out trains (that run on clean biodiesel fuel), providing friendly, top-notch service all along the way (a rarity in travel these days). Unbearable traffic, pricey refuels, road rage, and steep carbon footprints already feel like a distant past as Florida enters an age of high-speed train travel.

Here, all you need to know about the state’s high-speed rail service—present and future—and why you’ll want to ditch the car on your next trip to Florida.

Brightline’s south Florida destinations

Initially, Brightline operated between three major south Florida destinations—Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach—and the two smaller cities of Aventura and Boca Raton. Service between Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach runs almost hourly from early morning to late night. Trains make quick stops in Boca Raton (between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale) and Aventura (between Fort Lauderdale and Miami).

The trip clocks in at 17 minutes between Miami and Aventura; a total of around 33 minutes between Miami and Fort Lauderdale; 16 minutes between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton; and 40 minutes total between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. These times are less than half the typical travel time by car (and about one-third if accounting for rush hour).

Brightline travel to Orlando

Brightline currently runs 30 trains daily between Orlando and Miami , with 15 daily departures from each city. Total travel time between Miami and Orlando clocks in at around 3 hours and 25 minutes—a bit less than the amount of time it takes to drive between the two destinations without traffic. Travel between south Florida stations maxes out at 79 mph while part of the distance from West Palm Beach to Orlando will reach speeds of 130 mph.

The new 37,350-square-foot Brightline Orlando Station is located within a two-story glass atrium complex at Orlando International Airport, next to Terminal C. Travelers do not need to be flying in or out of the airport to access the train station and its facilities.

How much do Brightline tickets cost?

Before purchasing a ticket on the Brightline app or website, you’ll need to first choose between two classes of service: “Smart” and “Premium.” Both promise comfy seats, free Wi-Fi, and the greater Brightline train experience. However, Premium means seating in Coach 1 (versus 2, 3, 4 or 5), where complimentary snacks and beverages (including alcoholic drinks) are provided along with slightly roomier seats. It also grants access to the pre-departure lounges at train stations, where bites and tipples are also available. (Note: All six stations have Premium lounges.)

Currently, tickets in Smart begin at $6.50 for the journey between Miami and Aventura ($27 in Premium). Between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, fares start at $10 in Smart and $27 in Premium. For Miami to West Palm Beach, fares commence at $15 in Smart and $37 in Premium. Put in perspective, a rideshare typically costs $25–$60 from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to Aventura, $45–$75 from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, and over $75–$100 between Miami and West Palm Beach.

Tickets in Smart for the new Orlando service currently begin at $79 for adults and $39 for kids for the full journey between Miami and Orlando. Groups of four or more get an additional 25 percent off. Fares in Premium begin at $149 and include checked luggage plus complimentary food and drink throughout the train ride.

In general with Brightline, purchasing several days in advance is the best way to get the lowest standard fare. In addition, Brightline runs plenty of promos at any given time, most of which you can find on its website. The best offers are typically for larger groups or frequent riders.

What it’s like on board

Inside the trains, the colors skew neutral and the cars are spacious. Interior aisles measure an ample 32 inches, making it easy to maneuver rolling suitcases, strollers, and wheelchairs. The train seats look and feel like premium economy airline seats; there’s plenty of legroom and elbow room plus an in-seat recline that slides forward instead of landing on the lap of the passenger behind. Each seat also features two USB ports and two outlets, so you can charge all your electronics at once.

In Smart class, food and beverages are available for purchase. In Premium on south Florida routes, riders receive one snack and two drinks of their choice from the roving cart. (On the Orlando route, Premium passengers receive one snack, one meal, dessert, and unlimited drinks.)

On board, Brightline offers complimentary Wi-Fi via SpaceX’s Starlink to provide fast, uninterrupted service on all trains.

Florida's Incredible New High-speed Train Now Goes From Orlando to Miami — and I Was One of the First on Board

Everything you need to know about riding Florida's Brightline train from Orlando to Miami.

train travel in florida

As Brightline’s self-proclaimed No. 1 fan , I’ve been waiting impatiently for its Orlando extension . Being a travel writer and central Florida native living in West Palm Beach, I feel like this modern high-speed train was made for me: not only can I hop between home and Miami (or Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, or Aventura ) with ease, I can now sprint up to Orlando to see friends and family and include Orlando International Airport among my options when booking flights abroad, no three-hour drive required. (In fact, I recently booked a return flight into MCO instead of my usual PBI or FLL just because I could.) Heck, my husband and I might even become Annual Passholders at Walt Disney World now that the journey is this seamless.

  • Florida's Brightline train now offers service from Orlando to Miami. It already offered transportation between West Palm Beach and Miami, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Aventura.
  • Premium tickets, which start at $149, come with lounge access and a complimentary checked bag.
  • Brightline's Orlando route terminates insider Orlando International Airport.
  • The train has a signature jasmine-musk scent.

For all these reasons and more, I was ecstatic to be one of the first riders on Brightline’s recently debuted Orlando route, which currently terminates inside the Orlando International Airport. (There’s talk of extending to Disney and even Tampa.) While the train has run between West Palm Beach and Miami since 2018, its connection to Orlando has been an eagerly awaited development for Floridians and tourists alike.

Skye Sherman/Travel + Leisure

My initial ride confirmed Brightline’s link north to Orlando was everything I had dreamed it would be. Our flight landed in Terminal A of the Orlando International Airport, so we took a short ride on the people mover to Terminal C, the location of Brightline’s Orlando station.

From there, follow the signs to the Brightline station — it’s well-marked — then use your nose: Brightline’s signature grapefruit-jasmine musk scent wafts all the way to the escalators you’ll ride up to the station entrance. Don’t fret about tight connections: We had an hour allotted between plane landing and train departure, but only needed about 20 minutes. (Obviously, if you take the train to Orlando to depart by air, leave more time to make it to your flight.)

Upon entering, you’re subject to a quick security scan; infrequent fliers can get a taste here of what that much-lauded TSA PreCheck life is like. You simply put your bags on the conveyor belt to be scanned, walk through, and grab them from the other end — no shoe removal or unpacking or pat-downs required. Easy.

From there, you have a few choices. If you have time to spare, shop for made-in-Florida knick-knacks and treats in the gift shop or grab a craft cocktail at Mary Mary Bar. Those pressed for time or wanting grab-and-go options can peruse MRKT Place, which offers a convenience store-style selection of food and drink.

Or — and this is what I’d recommend — spring for a Premium ticket (from $149), which will grant you access to an exclusive lounge in the station and a designated car on the train. It’s a nice place to wait, with floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the tracks below and the green Florida landscapes beyond, and a first-class experience on board; many business travelers spring for Premium. While every level of the Brightline experience is luxurious, Premium elevates your trip further with free food and drink (including alcohol) in the station and on board, plus priority seating and a complimentary checked bag. (Riders with non-Premium tickets, called Smart tickets, pay $25 per bag.)

A few minutes before departure, boarding begins; one quick escalator ride down to the platform and you’re walking onto a clean, sleek train car equipped with fast Wi-Fi, spacious leather seats, and power outlets a’plenty. (One couple even got married on the train , so you know it’s nice.)

The ride between Orlando and West Palm Beach — during which you’ll have to try very hard to resist schadenfreude as you dart past standstill traffic at speeds of up to 125 mph — takes about two hours; add another hour if you’re going the full distance to Miami. But time flies as you work, chat, grab bites from the snack cart, and take restroom breaks, all without having to pull off the highway or abide by GPS re-routes. Truthfully, you couldn’t pay me to drive this route now that the train is an option.

Courtesy of Brightline

While there’s enough on board to keep you occupied, don’t forget to gaze out the window for a spell: as we careened through swampland and small towns then sped across the St. Lucie River in Stuart, mere inches above the water, I felt as if I’d been transported back in time to the golden age of train travel in Florida, when Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad stretched all the way south to Key West .

Florida has always been a land of promise, of rainbows and sunshine — literally — but with this convenient and scenic rail line (re)instated, I’ve never felt more proud to call the state my home.

On your next trip to Florida , don’t pass up the chance to add Miami to your Disney vacation, or an Orlando excursion to your South Florida trip — it’s never been easier to see it all . Brightline now runs 30 trains per day (15 round trips) between Orlando and Miami, with hourly northbound and southbound departures running from early in the morning to late at night.

One-way Smart fares start at $79 for adults and $39 for kids; if you have a group of four or more, you’ll automatically save 25 percent on Smart fares. One-way Premium fares start at $149.

Tour the Sunshine State Aboard Amtrak's Florida Expeditions (2024)

Last revised: January 1, 2024

By:  Adam Burns

Florida, known for its sunny beaches, vibrant cities, and tourist attractions, is also home to a diverse range of passenger trains including intercity, regional, and commuter in nature.

These services offer an efficient and convenient mode of transportation for both residents and visitors, connecting major cities, tourist destinations, and key regions across the state.

This article provides a brief look at the current services available in Florida, highlighting their routes, features, and contributions to the state's transportation network.

917412657213578178587158762768776.jpg

One of the prominent passenger train services in Florida is Brightline, a private intercity rail system operated by Brightline Trains LLC. Currently, Brightline operates two routes:

Miami to West Palm Beach: This route covers approximately 70 miles and connects downtown Miami to West Palm Beach, with intermediate stops in Fort Lauderdale and Miami International Airport. Brightline offers a high-speed and comfortable travel experience, featuring amenities like free Wi-Fi, power outlets, food and beverage services, and spacious seating.

West Palm Beach to Orlando: Under construction and expected to be operational in the near future, this route will extend Brightline's service from West Palm Beach to Orlando, spanning around 170 miles. The expansion will enhance connectivity between South Florida and Central Florida, providing a convenient transportation option for tourists and residents alike.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail service in the United States, operates several routes that serve Florida. These routes include:

Silver Service

Amtrak's Silver Star and Silver Meteor connect Florida to major cities in the Northeast and Southeast regions of the country. The Silver Star runs between New York City and Miami, while the Silver Meteor connects Miami to New York City via cities like Jacksonville, Savannah, and Washington, D.C.

Together, these trains are known as the Silver Service .  Both trains have quite a history as part of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad's popular fleet of southern streamliners during the classic era of rail travel when no expense was spared to make sure passengers thoroughly enjoyed their trip.

As the trains served the sub-tropical regions of the U.S. from South Carolina to Florida they actually remained fairly popular with the public all of the way through the 1960s, which is a significant reason why several of then-Seaboard Coast Line's fleet was retained after Amtrak began.

While the carrier's versions of the trains today are not quite as opulent, combined they still attract nearly one millions riders annually.  The most prominent train to make up Amtrak's Silver Service today would certainly be the SAL's Silver Meteor.

This train was the railroad's flagship, first inaugurated on February 2, 1939 just when the streamliner craze was really catching on around the country. The Meteor evoked the South in every way possible with "tropical" colors adorning both the exterior and interior.

While the original train was meant to be an all-coach run on the SAL it also offered through Pullman, sleeper service between Richmond-New York/Boston via the Pennsylvania and New Haven railroads.

In the 1950s the Meteor sported its most prominent feature, the “Sun Lounge”, which featured glass ceilings since height restrictions forced the railroad from using domes.

In any event, the inauguration of the Silver Meteor forced rival Atlantic Coast Line to scramble and showcase its own streamliner to Florida, The Champion .

By the late 1960s both trains were still in service on the Seaboard Coast Line and because of their success survived through the start of Amtrak on May 1, 1971.

While the Silver Meteor has been retained by Amtrak it has undergone numerous routing changes, and even a name change since 1971.  The train began bypassing Jacksonville just a year later in 1972, one of the major stops under SAL ownership. However, this was returned in 1973.

Later that decade and into the 1980s it switched over to former ACL lines in Florida although part of these changes were due to the abandonment of SAL corridors as then CSX Transportation.

Today, the Meteor uses Amfleet coaches for dining, lounge, snack, and diner services while Viewliners sleepers as used for nightly accommodations. Power north of Washington, D.C. is provided by AEM-7 electrics and General Electric "Genesis" diesels south of that point.

Overall, the entire corridor from Boston to Miami is 1,389 miles in length and requires more than 28 hours per trip. Ironically, this is now more than two hours slower than during the Seaboard era when the train required just under 26 hours along the same route.

Annual ridership on the Meteor now sits at nearly 400,000 annually, or just over 1,000 passengers per trip. As for the Silver Star the sister train to the Meteor offers quite a similar routing.

However, the one change with the train is that it connects directly to Tampa before reaching Miami as its sibling bypasses this city (but does offer bus service).

As such, the entire route is 1,522 miles in length, nearly 150 miles longer.  The accommodations, however, are roughly the same with Amfleet and Viewliner cars used on every train. A typical consist for the Star includes a baggage, two Viewliners, a Heritage Fleet diner, a café car, and at least three coaches.

This unique service allows passengers to transport their vehicles (cars, motorcycles, or small boats) along with them on the train. The Auto Train operates between Lorton, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.), and Sanford, Florida (near Orlando), providing a convenient option for travelers who wish to avoid long-distance driving.

Tri-Rail, officially known as the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) Tri-Rail Commuter System, is a commuter rail service that operates in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. It was established in January, 1989 to alleviate traffic congestion along the busy Interstate 95 corridor and provide an alternative mode of transportation for commuters.

Tri-Rail operates along a 74-mile corridor, stretching from Miami International Airport to Mangonia Park, with 18 stations serving major urban centers, employment hubs, and suburban neighborhoods. The rail system effectively connects cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, providing a seamless and convenient commuting experience for thousands of daily passengers.

The service operates seven days a week, with increased frequency during peak hours. Weekday service starts early in the morning and continues until late evening, catering to individuals working various shifts. On weekends, Tri-Rail offers a reduced schedule, ensuring continued accessibility for those who rely on public transportation outside of typical working hours.

Tri-Rail prioritizes passenger comfort and convenience. The trains are equipped with comfortable seating, spacious interiors, and amenities like Wi-Fi access, charging stations, and bike racks.

Passengers can relax, catch up on work, or simply enjoy the journey while avoiding the stress of traffic congestion on busy roadways. Additionally, Tri-Rail stations provide ample parking spaces, making it convenient for commuters to park their vehicles and board the train.

Tri-Rail plays a crucial role in integrating various transit modes within the region. Many Tri-Rail stations are strategically located near bus terminals, allowing passengers to seamlessly transfer between rail and bus services. This interconnectivity facilitates multi-modal commuting, enabling passengers to reach their final destinations efficiently and sustainably.

Tri-Rail has plans for future expansion and enhancement. The Tri-Rail Coastal Link project aims to extend service to downtown Miami, connecting the existing Tri-Rail system with the vibrant urban core. This expansion will further improve connectivity within the region and offer additional commuting options for residents and visitors.

SunRail, operated by the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (CFRTA), is a commuter rail system serving the Central Florida region. Launched in 2014, SunRail was introduced as a solution to the increasing traffic congestion on major roadways and as a means to enhance connectivity for commuters.

SunRail operates along a 61-mile corridor, spanning four counties: Volusia, Seminole, Orange, and Osceola. The service connects key urban centers, suburban neighborhoods, and employment hubs within the region. The route encompasses stations in cities such as DeBary, Sanford, Orlando, and Poinciana, ensuring widespread coverage and accessibility for residents and visitors.

On weekdays, the service operates from early morning to late evening, with increased frequency during peak hours. The trains operate less frequently during non-peak hours and weekends, providing essential service for those who rely on public transportation beyond traditional working hours.

SunRail has plans for future expansion and enhancements to further improve connectivity and service in Central Florida. Proposed expansions include extending the rail line to DeLand in Volusia County, and adding new stations to better serve growing communities and key destinations. These expansion efforts will increase accessibility and connectivity, further reducing reliance on personal vehicles and easing congestion.

Rail travel in Florida plays a significant role in the state's transportation infrastructure, connecting major cities, regions, and tourist destinations. Brightline, Amtrak, Tri-Rail, and SunRail offer a variety of routes and schedules to cater to the needs of both residents and visitors.

These train services provide a reliable, comfortable, and eco-friendly alternative to driving or flying, easing traffic congestion, reducing carbon emissions, and contributing to sustainable transportation in the Sunshine State.

As Florida continues to grow and evolve, the expansion and improvement of passenger train services will further enhance connectivity, accessibility, and mobility throughout the state.

Tourist Trains

If you are simply after a train ride for the day, Florida is home to a few organizations which offer scenic trips for the public.  Most notably these include the Florida Railroad Museum, Seminole Gulf Railway, and Gold Coast Railroad Museum.

14 Incredible Things Miami, Florida, Is Known And Famous For

From miami to orlando: exploring the 10 best foodie spots in florida cities, think twice about carrying bear spray this summer.

  • Brightline's new Orlando train station revolutionizes travel in Florida, making it sustainable, reliable, and comfortable for visitors to access Orlando and Miami.
  • Brightline is America's first privately funded rail project in over a century, costing over $6 billion. It aims to replace three million cars on the road in Florida.
  • Brightline offers different fare classes, with Smart Fares starting at $10 and Premium Fares starting at $36. The train stations are beautifully designed with convenient amenities and lounges for travelers.

Traveling in Florida just got a whole lot brighter with the introduction of Brightline's hotly anticipated Orlando train station. Last month, travelers and local Floridians alike celebrated the long-awaited rail extension, opening with a yellow carpet rolled out to wave off the inaugural journey from Orlando International Airport to downtown Miami.

So why was this new route of Florida's inter-city rail system met with such a massive celebration? Without any hyperbole, this latest extension of the Brightline changes the travel game completely in Florida. It will revolutionize how travelers hoping to visit Orlando or Miami from one another can access these cities, allowing visitors to sustainably and reliably travel in comfort and style. Here's what to know about the Brightline train.

The coastal city of Miami is a must-visit Florida city. Learn what Miami is known for, from delicious dishes to exciting activities.

So What Is The Brightline, Exactly?

Founded in 2012 and organized as Brightline in 2017, Brightline quickly expanded and rapidly worked toward connecting South Florida with various destinations on the state's coast and with Central Florida. With a mission to link locations that were "too long to drive and too short to fly" by train, Brightline unveiled its Miami to Fort Lauderdale route in 2018 with extensions/expansions to Boca Raton and West Palm Beach and through Aventura opened throughout the last few years.

Though not considered a "high-speed rail" by technical standards (speeds max out at 125 mph while high-speed rails are meant to run over 200 mph), it is still one of the most time-efficient and effective transportation systems in North America.

Brightline's biodiesel electric trains are sophisticated and sustainable, significantly reducing CO2 emissions in the state. Sustainability and "clean" travel are in the company's DNA; so much so that this aspiration toward industry-leading environmental friendliness extends to Brightline's newest endeavors in California and Nevada where an eventual Southern California to Las Vegas rail system will run with entirely electric trains.

Brightline's aspiration is to replace approximately three million cars on the road with its connectivity between South Florida and Central Florida. At the moment, 16 total round-trips are run daily from MiamiCentral Station to Orlando, with plans to extend to Tampa in the company's next phases.

It's also worth noting that Brightline runs on newly built tracks in existing transportation corridors in Florida, meaning less rail congestion since they don't compete for track space with freight/commercial trains and other rail systems.

With a price tag of just over $6 billion thus far, Brightline is America's first privately funded rail project to succeed in over a century.

Available Routes

Floridians are rejoicing over the rapidly expanding connectivity of the Brightline rail system. The southernmost hub in the state is located in downtown Miami at their MiamiCentral Station. From here, travelers can ride up to Aventura, then to Fort Lauderdale—a popular spring break destination for students and grown-ups alike —then to Boca Raton and West Palm Beach.

From West Palm Beach, travelers can ride into Central Florida, arriving at Orlando International Airport. These routes are ideal for those hoping to take a day trip to West Palm Beach to hit all the highlights there or weekend trips to and from Florida's popular seasonal events or tours in Orlando .

Ambition travelers can use Brightline's connectivity to try all the best foods from Miami to Orlando or travel from Orlando to their nearest beaches ; the train makes it much more feasible to do these activities during one's stay!

How Much Are Brightline Train Tickets?

Brightline recognizes the need for seamless travel, no matter the budget, so they designed different fare classes that reflect the needs and wants of a modern-day traveler.

With two classes, Smart Fares and Premium Fares, and discounts for families, groups, and corporate travelers, Brightline's fare model offers some of the most "bang for the buck" fares that travelers will find nowadays. Tickets and custom passes can be purchased online on Brightline's website , and ticket help is always available at the stations.

Savor the Sunshine State, and discover the ten best food spots in Florida, away from the theme parks and beaches.

Smart Fares

Smart Fares are the most economical way of booking on Brightline, with some shorter routes coming in as low as $10 per ride (sometimes even lower during off-peak times), and longer routes starting at $79.

Smart Fare passengers have access to the Smart Lounges at the stations, as well as WiFi on the train, and extremely comfortable leather seating on board. Food and drink can be purchased à la carte for a low-stress, but very comfortable ride.

Just be aware that luggage is not included with this fare, so if traveling with larger pieces, checking a bag is an additional cost. However, traditional carry-on-sized suitcases or weekenders can be stored in the onboard luggage racks or on overhead shelving above the seat.

  • Miami to Aventura Sample Fare: $6.50 per person throughout the week, purchased 2-3 days in advance; $16 per person for fares next or same day
  • Miami to Orlando Sample Fare: $79 per person for departure times after 7:00 AM all week; $99 per person for departure times before 7:00 AM

Premium Fares

Premium Fares are the way to travel if looking for an all-inclusive experience. Premium bookings include access to special premium lounges stocked with food and beverages (both adult and kid-friendly options) pre-departure.

These lounges are incredibly modern, yet comfortable, outfitted to meet the needs of a traveler with plenty of charge ports/outlets, bright and cheery artwork, and state-of-the-art facilities (which is true of the entire station, not just the premium lounge).

Starting at $36 per person on shorter routes and $149 for longer routes, this fare class is definitely for those looking for luxurious comfort. The seats are slightly larger, and snacks are included on board, as are beverages (including adult beverages).

Checked bags are also included in a premium fare, so travelers don't need to worry about packing limitations.

  • Miami to Aventura Sample Fare: $36 per person throughout the week before 5:00 PM, purchased 2-3 days in advance; $56 for evening rush hours times (5:00 PM-7:00 PM) and NBA game nighttimes
  • Miami to Orlando Sample Fare: $149 per person for the majority of times (exceptions include high traffic seasonal hours such as during special theme park events)

Add-Ons: Parking, Passes, and Shuttles

At booking, travelers are able to customize add-ons to their tickets/passes for an extremely streamlined travel experience. Commuters can purchase a monthly parking pass starting at $75 per month to add to their 40-ride-a-month commuter pass.

  • Commuter pass prices start at $179 per month and vary depending on the configuration of routes and fare class.

Travelers looking for a transfer to and from Brightline stations can also book transport depending on the station of transfer. Brightline+ services allow travelers to book Ubers, private car transfers, and shuttles at major stations like Orlando when booking train tickets while other stations have fixed shuttle transfers to and from significant transfer areas (like the airport) to the Brightline station.

With even more collaborations in the works with companies like Mears Transportation (one of Orlando's most extensive transport companies), Brightline's convenience factor will only get better and better.

Brightline Station Experience & Lounges

Potentially Brightline's most unique and revolutionary offering is in its station experience. Much more akin to a high-end and modern European train travel experience than anything seen in North America, Brightline's stations are beautifully designed and consistently outfitted with fantastic amenities like a convenience store and a Mary Mary Restaurant and Bar.

Visitors will immediately notice Brightline's fantastic attention to detail from well-maintained facilities, conveniently located customer service desks, and even a signature scent pumped into the stations--and can be purchased in candle form in their gift shop!

Depending on which fare class travelers book, tickets will include access to either the Premium Lounge or the Smart Lounge. While both lounges offer plentiful and comfortable seating and lots of outlets for charging opportunities, the Premium Lounge includes a diverse spread of food items and self-serve cocktails, beers, and wines.

The Future Is Bright With Brightline

It's very clear that Brightline has thoughtfully considered every detail of how to maximize a traveler's comfort, and the opening of their Orlando station only emphasizes how convenient, pleasant, and easy it is to get from one part of Florida to the other on Brightline.

With Brightline spearheading the future of train travel in America, travelers should eagerly look forward to what this company can do to service the rest of the continent.

BRIGHTLINE MAKES HISTORY AS FASTEST TRAIN IN FLORIDA

Brightline reached speeds of 130 mph during testing between Orlando International Airport and Cocoa, Fla.

ORLANDO, FL  –  Brightline , the only provider of modern, eco-friendly, intercity rail in America is officially the fastest train in Florida and the Southeastern United States after reaching speeds of 130 mph. The historic accomplishment took place while Brightline conducted train testing along its new 35-mile rail corridor between Orlando International Airport and Cocoa, Fla. The new tracks are built along the Beachline Expressway/SR 528, which is fenced and has no grade crossings.

During testing, Brightline trains are required to test faster than planned operating speeds. Once carrying passengers, Brightline trains will travel at maximum speeds of 125 mph which is more than two miles per minute.

“Reaching 130 isn’t just another milestone to our team, but the continuation of a dream that we’ve been working towards for several years,” said Patrick Goddard, president of Brightline Trains. “More importantly, this historic feat brings us one step closer to launching Brightline service between Orlando and Miami.”

“Florida has always been at the forefront of train travel since the days when Henry Flagler connected Jacksonville to the Keys,” said Jim Kovalsky, president, Florida East Coast Railway Society. “Back then, there were reports that trains ran at 100 mph, but no one ever dreamed of reaching 130 mph. Brightline dreamed big and did it. History has been made and Henry Flagler would be proud.”

By reaching 130 mph Brightline broke its previous record of 110 mph, which the company set last fall during testing through Martin and St. Lucie Counties in Florida’s Treasure Coast.

Opening this year, the Orlando Station will revolutionize train travel in America and continue Brightline’s vision of offering a guest-first travel experience. Connecting two of the most congested city pairs in the nation, Brightline will whisk passengers between South and Central Florida in about three hours.

Just how fast does a Brightline train go? Here are the maximum speeds:

Current Operations in South Florida: 79 mph

Orlando Extension from West Palm Beach to Cocoa: 110 mph

Cocoa to Orlando International Airport: 125 mph

The Brightline train sets are powered by two locomotives, one on each end, that are 16-cylinder, 4,000 hp Cummins EPA Tier-IV compliant diesel-electric engines. These locomotives and coaches are manufactured by Siemens Rolling Stock Facility in Sacramento, Calif.

Brightline continues to work closely with community partners, government agencies and news media to raise awareness for rail safety throughout all testings. Brightline’s current testing along the corridor from Cocoa south to West Palm Beach is ongoing, reaching speeds of up to 110 mph.  Brightline has made significant infrastructure and safety improvements at all 156 crossings between Cocoa and Palm Beach.  At the crossings where testing is occuring all safety improvements have been installed. Those improvements vary per crossing, but may include new crossing gates, signal systems, pedestrian gates, pavement markings and roadway profiles. Where trains will operate at 110 mph, all crossings have quad gates or medians to prevent motorists from driving around lowered crossing gates.

The public is encouraged to help spread the message of rail safety with Brightline’s safety materials, including taking the  digital rail safety pledge and viewing and sharing the new safety PSA .

Trains will continue testing between Orlando International Airport and Cocoa daily throughout March between 7am and 7pm.

5 things to know about Tri-Rail's new express route from West Palm to Miami

South Florida's publicly run passenger train, Tri-Rail , will start its rush hour express service between downtown West Palm Beach and downtown Miami on Monday, July 1.

Here are five important things to know about Tri-Rail train from West Palm Beach to Miami.

1. Tri-Rail's new route, schedule from West Palm to Miami

The weekday express train is scheduled to leave the West Palm Beach station on Tamarind Avenue and Clematis Street at 6:30 a.m., arriving at the MiamiCentral station at 8:05 a.m. The service is scheduled to leave MiamiCentral at 5:35 p.m. and arrive in West Palm Beach at 7:05 p.m.

The new train does not go north in the morning or south in the evening. Passengers can board at any station on the express train's route. In addition to West Palm Beach and MiamiCentral, the stations are Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the Miami Metrorail transfer station in Hialeah.

For $17.50, passengers can travel about 90 minutes from West Palm Beach to Miami in the early morning and return in the late afternoon, stopping at five stations instead of the 17 on the non-express route.

More: Cost, details revealed for West Palm Beach Tri-Rail link from Mangonia to VA Medical Center

2. Ticket prices, fees for Tri-Rail

The faster train's fares are the same as Tri-Rail's non-express routes.

Here are the costs one way from West Palm Beach:

  • To Boca Raton: $5
  • To Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport: $7.50
  • To Miami Metrorail or MiamiCentral: $8.75

A ride from the Boca Raton stop will cost $5 to the Fort Lauderdale airport station and $6.25 to the Miami stops.

Tri-Rail's non-express service between West Palm Beach and Miami takes more than two hours, requiring riders to board a second Tri-Rail train at the Metrorail stop.

Previously: Tri-Rail to offer express trains to Miami to help commuters get to work for $17.50 a day

3. Tri-Rail tickets compared to Brightline's South Florida train service

The cheapest one-way ticket on the privately run Brightline costs $24 for one passenger. It takes 80 minutes to go from its downtown West Palm Beach station to MiamiCentral without delays and stopping in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Aventura along the way.

Brightline used to offer South Florida commuters what was effectively a $10 per ride pass — $399 for 40 rides — but started raising prices this year . It now offers riders in the region a 10-trip pack for $350, effectively $35 a ride. Brightline wants to boost service on its profitable Orlando route cutting available seats for trips within South Florida.

Rides on Tri-Rail's express service are covered by its regular multi-trip passes. A regular monthly pass for non-disabled adults costs $110 for unlimited trips. A monthly pass rider who takes the express service both ways for all the 23 weekdays in July will have effectively spent $4.78 per day.

Brightline's price hikes led Tri-Rail to launch its new service. Its operator, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, approved the express service May 31, at an estimated cost of $2.5 million.

4. Tri-Rail offers Uber, Lyft, taxi credits for passengers

Tri-Rail passengers can get a $5 credit when taking Uber, Lyft or a taxi to and from train stations, except MiamiCentral, if they present drivers with a valid EASY Card, which is dispensed at the stations' ticketing machines. Riders can put money on the cards to pay train fare. Anyone who wants to claim the credit can learn more at tri-rail.com/pages/view/ride-partners .

5. How to purchase Tri-Rail tickets online, plus the Tri-Rail app

  • The EASY card: Riders who want to purchase tickets online can sign up for Tri-Rail's EASY card. The EASY Card is Tri-Rail’s automated fare collection system. With the EASY Card, users add cash value up to $150 to pay one-way fares, or load the card with all of Tri-Rail’s different fare products including the monthly, 12-trip or weekend passes. The EASY Card automatically deducts the appropriate fare when users tap the card on any of the validators located on all station platforms.
  • Tri-Rail app: The mobile app includes train schedules, mobile passes, real-time tracking and arrival times and system alerts. Riders can download the app for free in the App Store or Google Play.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster vs. Trolls Trollercoaster

The thrill seeker's jewel of Jurassic Park in Universal’s Islands of Adventure and billed as the fastest and tallest launch coaster in Florida, VelociCoaster opened in 2021 and is famous for launching guests 70 mph in just 2.4 seconds. VelociCoaster faces off against the newly opened Trolls Trollercoaster at Universal Studios, which is a family-friendly coaster where guests join Poppy, Tiny, and the twins Satin and Chenille as they try to escape from spooky spiders.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit vs. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

The Rockit at Universal Studios lets you choose your coaster soundtrack while hitting speeds of 65 mph. It's up against the family-friendly Mine Train at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, where guests race through the diamond mine from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

Kraken vs. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Kraken is billed as Orlando’s only floorless roller coaster, where your feet dangle as you soar at highway speeds to heights exceeding 150 feet above SeaWorld. It competes against Big Thunder Mountain , a Magic Kingdom classic that takes guests on a thrilling ride aboard a speeding train through a haunted gold mine.

Mako vs. Space Mountain

This battle pits SeaWorld's Mako , opened in 2016 and billed as Orlando's tallest and fastest roller coaster, reaching speeds up to 73 mph and heights up to 200 feet, against Magic Kingdom mainstay Space Mountain . Debuting in 1975, this indoor roller coaster sends you dipping and careening through the darkness of outer space.

Iron Gwazi vs. Expedition Everest

Riding the Iron Gwazi at Busch Gardens in Tampa requires, well, nerves of steel. It’s North America’s tallest and the world’s fastest (reaches speeds of 76 mph) and steepest hybrid coaster. But don’t sleep on Disney World's Animal Kingdom's Expedition Everest , which features cool Yeti and icy Himalayan themes. Oh, at one point, it goes backwards. No problem? Well, you’ve been warned.

Montu vs. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

Montu is a coaster that reigned supreme when it opened in 1996 as the world's tallest and fastest inverted coaster. Located at Busch Gardens, it squares off against a giant brand with Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal, a ride modeled after the wildly popular book series.

Kumba vs. The Incredible Hulk Coaster

Opening in 1993, the steel coaster Kumba at Busch Gardens is a three-minute ride known for its large inverted loops and riders reach up to 3.8 times the force of gravity. Its competition? The Incredible Hulk Coaster based on the popular comic is a ride where you "launch up to 67 miles per hour as Hulk-like power propels you upside down into a zero-gravity roll," Universal boasts on its website.

SheiKra vs. Cheetah Hunt

Two coasters at Busch Gardens will battle: SheiKra vs. Cheetah Hunt . The SheiKra thrills with a 200-foot climb, only to drop at a 90-degree angle and reach speeds of 70 mph. Cheetah Hunt is the amusement park's longest thrill ride at 4,400 feet and proudly boasts "A New Breed for Speed."

Tri-Rail express from West Palm to Miami starts Monday. Here's what to know

South Florida's publicly run passenger train, Tri-Rail , will start its rush hour express service between downtown West Palm Beach and downtown Miami on Monday.

For $17.50, passengers can travel about 90 minutes from West Palm Beach to Miami in the early morning and return in the late afternoon, stopping at five stations instead of the 17 on the non-express route.

Competition with Brightline after it raised prices

Tri-Rail introduced this service in response to the privately run Brightline raising its prices this year. While Brightline is about 10 minutes quicker, Tri-Rail's one way ticket is nearly 65% cheaper.

What are the ticket prices?

What about Brightline's South Florida service?

How long does driving between West Palm Beach and Miami take?

Driving from downtown West Palm Beach at 6:30 a.m. to downtown Miami usually takes 65 minutes to one hour and 50 minutes along Interstate 95, according to data that Google collects from smartphone users' Google Maps app data. Driving back at 5:30 p.m. takes 80 minutes to two hours and 10 minutes.

Amtrak train hits, kills 2 people in separate collisions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( WBTV /Gray News) - An Amtrak train hit and killed two people in separate incidents in North Carolina within a five-hour period on Thursday night and Friday morning.

The first collision happened around 8 p.m. in Burlington. The second happened just before 1 a.m. along Old Concord Road near Rocky River Road in east Charlotte.

Amtrak officials said the train was traveling to Charlotte from New York City. None of the train’s crew members or 106 passengers aboard the train were hurt.

Burlington police said in the first crash, 47-year-old Daniel Cameron Wagoner was hit while he was walking on the tracks. He died at the scene. The railway was closed for about three hours.

Officials later identified the man who died in Charlotte as 43-year-old Jerome Lydell Nelson. According to police, Nelson was sitting on the westernmost train track when he was hit.

Following the collision in Charlotte, an Amtrak spokesperson said the train, No. 79, was already “significantly delayed” in getting to Charlotte.

A train tracker showed that after the stop in Burlington, the train stopped in Greensboro, High Point, Salisbury and Kannapolis before arriving in Charlotte.

AirTrain fares cut in half as JFK Airport construction reaches peak

The AirTrain serving Kennedy Airport will be reduced to $4.25...

In an effort to reduce the snarling traffic expected during a massive construction project at Kennedy Airport this summer, the single ride fare for the AirTrain will temporarily be slashed in half to $4.25 starting Monday, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday.

The Port Authority has put out several advisories to travelers in recent months warning of expected congestion and traffic issues .

Hochul, in a statement, said the fare reduction makes it more affordable to use the AirTrain and would “mitigate travel delays.”

Earlier this month, the Port Authority unveiled a  free drop-off, pickup and waiting lot for passengers at Lefferts Boulevard to have easier access to the AirTrain, which brings them to different terminals.

And the agency said it has increased personnel including police officers, traffic managers, taxi dispatchers and parking attendants to help manage the flow of vehicles during construction.

The $19 billion “transformation project” at Kennedy includes a new roadway network, two new international terminals and a new ground transportation center. Construction is underway and will coincide with the busy summer travel months, expected to cause gridlock in and around the airport.

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton called it a “historic” project that comes “once in a generation.”

“We are entering our peak construction period while managing record passenger volumes, so traffic on the airport this summer will be very congested,” Cotton said in a statement. “When coming to or leaving the airport, we cannot more strongly recommend that travelers use the multitude of train and subway options that are reliably available.”

More than 3,500 parking spots have been eliminated due to construction, officials said. Travelers looking to park should prebook at JFKAirport.com .

The reduced AirTrain fare will be in effect through Labor Day and applies to the stations in Jamaica and Howard Beach.

The airport is expected to host over 18 million passengers this summer, 700,000 more than last summer, officials said.
