BUCKS BAND TRIP 66 NAVIGATING THE ROCKY ROAD TO SUCCESS
“A couple of radio stations played it, but no one really picked up the single (‘One Desire’), so we weren’t able to tour,” said lead guitarist Ryan Bernstein. “We opened up for Cheap Trick for a while, though, and that was cool.”
Despite disappointing album sales, “Trip 66” is an impressive explosion of dark, tempo-changing, guitar-driven psychedelia buoying the vocals of 18-year-old Maria Nicgorski, who often draws comparisons to a young Janis Joplin. “I didn’t expect it to sell a million copies,” said Bernstein, who’s nonetheless amped and ready to get the sound out to a bigger audience.
Tonight the band will play one of its first live shows in a while — and first ever in the Lehigh Valley — as an opening act for Stroudsburg’s Solution a.d. at the Sterling Hotel, Allentown. Aztec Trip also will perform.
But then it’s back to work on developing Trip 66’s next disc. The search for a producer is already on. Among those on the wish list: John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead), Jack Joseph (Black Crowes), Dave Freeman (Flaming Lips) and Jim Waters (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion).
“Next week we’re recording five songs for a demo for Columbia,” said Bernstein. “There are a few elements that are going to be the same, but there’s definitely going to be a change,” he said.
The songs on “Trip 66” were choppy and unexpectedly jumped from chord to chord, but the band’s newer material will focus more on structure. “I’d say it’s a bit more mature,” Bernstein said. The band may play up to seven new tunes at The Sterling, he added.
There’s also another kind of maturing the band’s undergoing. Bernstein, the oldest of the quintet, turned 21 on Monday. While he couldn’t go out and carouse with his band mates on his birthday, some rock star behavior still managed to surface. A buddy, whom he identified only as Jimmy, brought the guitarist to a club called Divas, where the two crossed paths with an exotic dancer. Reports Bernstein: “She brought me up on stage and chained me to a pole. She hurt me, man.”
Trip 66 will open for Solution a.d. tonight at the Sterling Hotel, 343 Hamilton St., Allentown. There will be a $5 cover charge after 8:30 p.m. The show will begin at 9:30 p.m. with a performance by Aztec Trip. 433-3480.

Trip 66 ‘s self-titled album contains no special effects or technical wizardry. In fact, the entire album was recorded in Maria Nicgorski and Paul Nicgorski’s (brother and sister) parents’ basement where they constructed their own studio. This extraordinary debut is loaded with heavy, pounding guitar sounds, immense percussion, and clever bass lines. Maria has the most amazing set of pipes. Listening to the record, it’s hard to believe that someone 18 years old has such an incredibly mature-sounding voice. Comparisons have been made to Janis Joplin, most likely due to the throaty, smoked-too-many-cigarettes style she possesses, but that’s where the similarities end. This sassy and brazen femme fatale evokes a unique, guttural, raw, powerful style all her own. Do you know someone whose been involved in an abusive relationship? Have you had your heart broken? Are youstill trying to find all the pieces? Maria passionately voices these feelings and so much more with a gut-wrenching honesty that makes listeners feel they can relate.
I braved blizzard conditions to catch them at The Rat in Boston. It’s too bad there were only 15 people there to witness their Boston debut; the band deserves so much more. Although the vocals sounded muddy and drowned out by the thunderous guitars, the band still came across a tight, powerful unit. Maria has a striking stage presence, yet seems oblivious to her own looks. Beautiful, spell-binding and mesmerizing, this tough little powerhouse concentrates more on the music and her performance. I was ecstatic when they played my two favorite songs, “One Desire” (a balls-out, foot-stomping rocker) and “Help Me” (a bluesy, swamp rock sort of tune). This is a band with no tricks or gimmicks up their sleeves. They’re a phenomenal and original quintet that will rock your puny little world. If you’re tired of media-hyped bands that fail to deliver, travel with Trip 66.
