HIT Amazon Prime show, The Grand Tour is back with its new Scotland 'Lochdown' special in a first look at the series.

The Grand Tour presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May reunite to cause havoc across Scotland in their latest Amazon Prime Video series.

The first look at The Grand Tour Scotland on Amazon Prime Vide has arrived starring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May

A trailer released today for the series sees the former Top Gear presenters get into strife on the ancient streets of Edinburgh, have a high octane showdown with Abbie on the racetrack and even having Richard's car go up in smokes.

"This promises to be the most beautiful drive we have ever done," the trailer starts, as Clarkson struggles around a corner in a blue Lincoln Continental

The trailer explains how the lads are confined to the UK by Covid and decided to tour Scotland in a 'Lochdown Special' to celebrate the great 70s American cars they saw in TV shows as kids.

James, Jeremy and Richard take to the highways of Scotland in a Cadillac Coupe De Ville as driven by Elvis, a Lincoln Continental as driven by Jock Ewing of Dallas fame, and a Buick Riviera as piloted by Clint Eastwood.

The trailer sees things get more complicated for the trio as they learn of the Covid threat and are forced to tether caravans to their American cars because staying in a hotel is ruled out due to Covid restrictions.

They then head out to the Outer Hebrides for one of their toughest challenges yet.

At the far reaches of Scotland, they must build a homemade floating bridge across the Hebridean sea, capable of supporting them and their massive cars on a perilous journey to their final destination.

It doesn't start well with Richard's boat failing to tether to the bridge properly.

Previously, The Sun Online reported how the Scotland special would span 60 minutes, and with some of it set in Edinburgh.

It is a follow up to The Grand Tour Madagascar's A Massive Hunt, complete with muscle cars and caravan tows.

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown is the first part of a UK double bill special and 90 minutes in total.

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown will launch Friday 30 th  July on Amazon Prime Video.

Covid restrictions meant they were UK bound and decided to undergo their 'most beautiful drive ever'

Jeremy Clarkson takes to the Scottish Highlands in new series The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown

The Top Gear trio is hitting the road once again - and maybe even a loch or two as they cross borders into Scotland.

Jeremy Clarkson's latest venture Clarkson's Farm , which saw the motoring host turn his hand to running a farm, saw massive success in NZ. And he's about to be back on our screens with a new series of The Grand Tour.

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown will portray motoring legends Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May stuck in the UK due to Covid-19 lockdowns. Inspired by the great American cars from the 70s, they embark on an epic road trip across the moors of Scotland to find out just why these legendary vehicles never quite took off in the UK.

The three hosts take some famous cars for a spin, including a Cadillac Coupe De Ville, which was driven by Elvis himself, and Clint Eastwood's Buick Riviera.

The stunning scenery of Scotland is the backdrop to what's been billed as one of the chronic petrolheads' funniest adventures to date.

It wouldn't be Top Gear if there wasn't some reckless driving and general chaos along the way - and the show promises to see its hosts wreak havoc on the historic streets of Edinburgh.

The new series sees the motoring legends reunite on the Scottish highlands. Photo / Supplied

They host a staged Cold War shootout pitting the worst American and Soviet cars ever made against each other and end up homeless in the Scottish Highlands. But Clarkson, Hammond and May find themselves up against their most epic challenge yet when a text from Mr Wilman puts them to the test.

The trio must modify their cars and head out to the Outer Hebrides. At the furthest reaches of Scotland, they accept a staggering challenge: to build their own floating bridge across the Hebridean Sea that's able to support them and their cars on a journey to their final stop.

TG Live in Scotland - buy tickets!

top gear grand tour scotland

FRIDAY 4 OCTOBER  UPDATE : Due to demand, we've now added a fourth show on the afternoon of Sunday 19 January. Tickets for the first three shows are now virtually sold out, so hurry...   Prices start from £49 (booking fees will apply) and are available fro m  topgearlive.co.uk .

People of Scotland: Top Gear Live is coming! After a spectacular world tour taking in Moscow, Sydney, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Durban and Poland, Jeremy, Richard, James and the one they call The Stig will headline in Glasgow for the first time ever at the newly opened SSE Hydro.

The TG Live team, having previously performed in the UK in London and Birmingham, will do three 90-minute shows in Glasgow on 18-19 January 2014, and Clarkson has confirmed that yes, there will be fire. "I've absolutely no idea exactly what we'll be up to in Glasgow, as this is the first time we've ever performed live north of the border," he said. "But you can guarantee it will be something very special," Jeremy added. "What we can promise is lots of gigantic explosions, some very scary stunts plus a magnificent line-up of incrediblyexpensive supercars... not to mention all the usual cock-ups, crashes and arguments. Who knows, you might even see The Stig in a kilt." It'd be a grand audience for it, because the SSE, opened earlier this week and designed by Foster and Partners, is Scotland's largest entertainment venue. "I'm told the building was inspired by ancient Roman and Greek amphitheatres so it sounds like the perfect setting for our kind of arcane humour and barbaric acts," Clarkson added. Tickets are now on sale, with prices starting from £49 (booking fees will apply). For more details go to topgearlive.co.uk .

The Grand Tour Season 3 – Well Aged Scotch – Episode Guide, Recap, Fun Facts

This episode starts with a conversation about money in the tent. Clarkson explains that by putting money in a savings account, you’re doing yourself a misfortune. You should rather invest in a classic car.

There are however, some classic cars that haven’t yet started to appreciate. So they go on an adventure to try and find the next best investment.

To Scotland…

They begin in a fishing port near Inverness, where Clarkson arrives in an Alfa Romeo GTV6. He bought it from an old man for £10,000, but before he talks too much about it, James May turns up in a Lancia Gamma Coupe. Clarkson says it’s one of the prettiest cars in the world, but doesn’t want to tell that to James who had bought it for £13,500.

James and Jeremy argue for a while before Hammond turns up in a Fiat X19 that he bought for £2,250. It’s starting to rust and has been painted a multitude of colours in its lifetime.

The trio decides to do the North Coast 500 road trip. It’s 500 miles around the North Coast of Scotland, but before they set off, Andy Wilman texts Jeremy. He tells him, if their cars don’t survive, they’ll be riding a bicycle home.

They set off, and straight away become disappointed with the scenery. Then one of James’ windscreen wipers falls off… This isn’t the only problem the car has, though. The car overheats, is prone to engine explosions, and, well, the main problem is the engine explodey bit.

On the way, Clarkson is having trouble changing gear in the GTV6, but he explains that he still loves it, despite its human-like flaws.

Hammond loves his Fiat, but isn’t a fan of the close proximity of the pedals.

Hammond decides they should have a drifting competition on a go-kart track. But unfortunately, none of them have the power to kick the tail out. And well… James’ car is front-wheel drive. He decides to cover his tyres in something very slippery to induce tail-happy handling. It eventually works, after quite a few attempts.

Hammond and Clarkson do the same to their tyres, but they try wrapping their tyres in some plastic they found – it doesn’t work. He crashes.

They do the same with Clarkson’s car, but there’s a bang. His prop-shaft is broken. Unfortunately this means Clarkson is on his bike back to the pub, just as it starts to get very cold and wet.

The Next Morning

With Clarkson getting safely back to where they were staying, overnight he removes Hammond’s roof, only for Hammond to accidentally reverse over it in the morning. And to top it all off, Clarkson got his car back, too.

Conversation Street

They begin by talking about James’ weird habit of putting insulating tape on the rear wheels of Scalextric cars to reduce their grip. But they quickly turn to how Clarkson fixed his Alfa Romeo – he didn’t, someone else did.

Onto the real news, firstly with Land Rover. They’ve developed a system to counter motion sickness automatically. They discuss sea sickness and their own horror stories. After that, they discuss a hover bike in Dubai. Hammond loves it, but Clarkson and May think it’s awful, complaining that it’s useless and dangerous.

Clarkson then goes on a rant about electric cars. For a long time…

The BMW M5 Review

top gear grand tour scotland

Clarkson drives the M5 with an aim to find out if it’s actually what drivers want. It’s the fastest ever yet, so he has a drag race with a Mercedes AMG GT. The BMW wins by a long way, but Clarkson is put off by the four-wheel drive system and its turbo technology. But when driving it, he doesn’t feel like these are changing the driving experience. And when you turn off the AWD system, he loves it.

But there’s a competitor: the Alpina B5. It’s made to be comfortable and luxurious with a relaxed suspension and steering setup. It still does have a very 600hp V8 however. And that’s more than the M5. And because it doesn’t have a limiter, it will do 205mph. The M5 will pull away on a track, but the B5 will be the car that you’d want to take home.

Abbie Eaton takes the M5 around the Eboladrome and gets a time of 1:20.4, 4 seconds faster than the old M5. The Alpina gets a time of 1:21.6.

Back To Scotland

Back in Scotland, the trio start to travel through gorgeous scenic locations, but because Hammond is getting cold without a rood, they stop for a cup of tea. Hammond argues that they need to take another road because of its amazing views. They decide to do it, and are astounded by the incredible scenery.

In the next episode, #TheGrandTour heads to Scotland in 'Well Aged Scotch'. Watch on Friday only on Prime Video. pic.twitter.com/WBrE7zK5T2 — The Grand Tour (@thegrandtour) February 20, 2019

Clarkson tells the camera that it’s his birthday, but Hammond and May haven’t remembered. But while Clarkson pops into a local town to try and balance his prop-shaft, Hammond and May start to plan Clarkson’s birthday surprise.

top gear grand tour scotland

They go ahead to set up his surprise party. Hammond cooks spaghetti bolognese, but goes on to deep dry it. During this time, May was organising the guests. Clarkson pulls up, can’t believe they’ve remembered, but is interrupted by James playing the bagpipes.

He quickly shouts that it’s the worst party he’s ever had.

The Next Day

Complaining that he’s not hung over and that the prop-shaft vibration was back, Clarkson continues through gorgeous Scotland, followed closely by Hammond and May.

Each presenter sums up their cars, explaining how they love each of them. Clarkson loves his Alfa so much that he takes it home to keep.

After an incredible drive, they arrive back at Inverness.

The Final Thought

Back at the tent, they explain that the drive around Scotland was possibly the best drive they’ve ever had. Since the film, James lost money on his car, as did Clarkson, and Hammond’s car blew up.

Episode Guide

The tent is on the shore of Loch Ness. Hammond test drives the new Fiat Abarth 124 Spider at the Eboladrome.

To prove that a second-hand Maserati priced under £8,000 are a better buy than a Ford Focus, the presenters travel to Circuit de Croix-en-Ternois in France for a series of tests with Clarkson’s Biturbo S Coupé, Hammond’s 430 Saloon, and May’s Zagato Spyder. Because May injured his right arm prior to the challenge, he bought an automatic variant. The presenters then embark on a road trip through Northern France. Following some breakdowns on Clarkson’s side, the trio play on the beach before travelling to Honfleur, where they encounter extremely narrow roads on their way to their hotel.

The next morning, they race back to England via the Port of Le Havre, with the loser selling his Maserati. Clarkson’s Biturbo dies, but he continues the race with it on a tow truck. He reaches the ferry port, but discovers that his Biturbo fell off the tow truck while chasing Hammond. May launches his Spyder toward a boat and crashes in spectacular fashion. The presenters conclude that buying a second-hand Maserati will result in a 66% chance of it working.

For “Celebrity Brain Crash”, Chris Hoy rows toward the tent, but his boat hits an underwater mine. To fill in the time, Clarkson uses a Bulgarian man to demonstrate a new hands-free system for any car and a Thai woman as an inexpensive massaging back seat.

0:00:17 – The cars in the titles are an AC 3000ME, a Hillman Avenger Tiger, and a Hillman Super Minx.

0:01:24 – Body of water fact alert! Loch Ness is over 22 miles long, almost 2 miles wide at its widest point, and up to 744 feet deep. By volume, it’s the largest lake in the British Isles.

0:02:20 – Buick was founded by David Dunbar Buick who was born in Arbroath, Scotland in 1854.

0:02:24 – John Paul Jones, the ‘father of the American Navt’, was born in South Western Scotland in 1747.

0:06:37 – The Abarth 124 Spider has a 1.4-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine making 168 horsepower. It can go from 0-62 in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 143mph.

0:07:23 – Abarth was a sports car maker and tuning shop, founded in 1949. It was bought by Fiat in 1971 and these days is to Fiat what AMG are to Mercedes or the M Division is to BMW.

0:13:20 – Nerdery cheat note – The Barchetta was Fiat’s last two-seater sports car, made from 1995 until 2005. In Italian its name means ‘little boat’.

0:14:31 – Jeremy is referring to John Cobb who was killed in 1952 while attempting to set a new water speed record on Loch Ness in a jet powered speedboat.

0:15:28 – A car with an open front and a closed rear interior is called a coupe de ville, a town car or a sedanca. If you knew this, award yourself 20 nerd points.

0:21:00 – The race track in the Maserati film is Circuit de Croix-en-Ternois.

0:21:35 – Jeremy’s Maserati is a 1987 Biturbo S. It has a 2-litre, twin turbo V6 engine making 217 horsepower. When it was new, it could go from 0-62 in 5.7 seconds and had a top speed of 142mph.

0:21:54 – The Ford Cortina – a very boxy and boring British saloon car from the 1960s and ’70s. And a bit of the ’80s.

0:22:19 – Richard’s Maserati is a 1988 430. Which is basically a Biturbo. It has a 2.8-litre twin turbo V6 engine which originally produced 221 horsepower. In its day it could cover 0-62 in 5.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 145mph.

0:23:38 – James’s Maserati is a 1989 Biturbo Zagato Spyder. It has the same 2.8-litre twin turbo V6 engine as Richard’s car and also makes 221 horsepower. However, thanks to its greater weight and automatic gearbox, it takes 6.4 seconds to go from 0-62 and has a top speed of 137mph.

0:23:47 – James May broke his arm after falling over, he was on the way back from the pub but he swears that had nothing to do with it.

0:24:32 – The Suzuki Celeryio has a 1-litre three cylinder engine making 67 horsepower. It has a top speed of 96mph and a 0-62 time of 13.5 seconds.

0:30:43 – Doncaster – a town in South Yorkshire, northern England, not known in the 1960s for its large population of Maseratis. Or indeed any Maseratis at all.

0:34:22 – Sir Chris Hoy – Olympic hold medal winning cyclist, racing driver, backwards rowing enthusiast.

0:38:52 – Massaging rear seats in the current BMW 7-series are a £895 option.

0:39:55 – Jeremy’s opening to part 2 of the Maserati film is a homage to the VW Golf GTI ‘Casino’ ad, first shown in the UK in 1987. Although the last line is a tribute to ’70s Brit sit-com Fawlty Towers. Mmm, references.

0:42:47 – The first written reference to Honfleur dates back to 1027, several years before the Maserati Biturbo was designed.

0:50:09 – “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” – Matthew 20:16. Another valuable lesson from Reverend James May.

0:52:10 – The crew car Jeremy uses as a brake is a Land Rover Discovery, the Grand Tour tracking car of choice thanks to its split tailgate which stops the expensive camera falling out. And also the cameraman.

0:54:45 – Jeremy’s small truck as a Renault Master dCi120. It has a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine making 118 horsepower.

0:57:58 – One of the seats from James’s Maserati was salvaged and now lives in the Grand Tour office as a stylish and slightly smelly easy chair.

The point is you have to know these cars to understand them. There’s far too much power for the rest of the car to handle and that is why they’re so intriguing. Pioneering technology of the time with massive performance and the servicing to go with all of that. People didn’t understand this sort of technology in a mass produced car. The ear;y ones were riddles with problems, the later version became the cars they should have been in the first place. Awesome. Anybody that wants to understand these cars watch Davide Cironi’s review on youtube.

Those 30 years old biturbo also if in not in great shape from the start that proofed to be extremely strong and unbreakable after all the abuse they went through….. A BMW m3 or a Mercedes 190 2..3 they probably would explode under this type of tritment. Any how Jeremy can’t make up his mind on these cars since he is praising a 222 24v in this old top gear video..

' src=

You could kinda tell what was going to happen at the end of the race because it was similar to when Jeremy tried to catch the ferry in that clio in Belfast on TG

' src=

Also when James died in Albania trying to catch the ferry after the bank robbery.
