Only have 1 week in Sri Lanka? Read on for my express 1 week Sri Lanka itinerary to help you make the most of your time!

It’s no secret that I love Sri Lanka . The palm-fringed island has become my second home over the past 8 years, and I now spend nearly half of the year there with my husband and adopted cat, Ziggy.

One of the best parts about spending more time in Sri Lanka is that I can convince my friends and family to come visit, and I get to show them around some of my favourite places and restaurants.

The issue is, many people (especially those who live and work in Asia) don’t get much time off from work, and more often than not it just isn’t do-able for them to spend 2 weeks in Sri Lanka . So what’s the solution? I’ve had to seriously compress my 2 week Sri Lanka itinerary to help friends and family make the most of their time in Ceylon.

The result? This express Sri Lanka 1 week itinerary that includes some of the top Sri Lanka destinations to give visitors a taste of what the country has to offer, with room for plenty of poolside (spiked) coconuts at happy hour.

Planning a trip to Sri Lanka in 2024? Read this first! Latest update as of May 2024: Planning a trip to Sri Lanka now may require more thought and planning – do your due diligence but everyone is working hard to make sure the country is ready to welcome tourists once again. Here are some travel tips for anyone contemplating a Sri Lanka trip in 2024/2025: 💉 If you are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated you will no longer need to quarantine on arrival in Sri Lanka, and as of December 7th 2022 no pre-arrival PCR or RAT tests are required for inbound passengers. The health declaration is no longer required, and the insurance is no longer mandatory but can be purchased on arrival. In other words – all pandemic-related restrictions for entering Sri Lanka have been removed. 💻 There is now a new Sri Lanka e-visa system here , the old “ETA” system is now defunct. The visa fee for most visitors is between US$50 (30-day single entry) to US$75 (closer to US$100 once additional fees have been added – a 6-month double entry visa). 💵 Due to the currency devaluation you will notice that prices for goods and services have gone up – however, the dollar-amounts remain approximately the same. As a tourist, you can exchange foreign currency at the airport upon landing so that you have some cash in hand. 🥥 Local supermarkets are full of fresh produce – albeit more expensive now. Roadside market stalls also have lots of fresh fruit and vegetables on offer. Imported products are rare, and if you find them they are also more expensive than before. Restaurants in the south coast of Sri Lanka are slowly but surely reopening for the upcoming peak season which begins in approximately November/December. 💡 Compared to June 2023 when there were twice-daily 1-1.5 hour long scheduled power cuts in the south coast, power cuts are currently few and far between. That’s not to say there are zero outages – even before the economic crisis it was not uncommon for the power to cut out occasionally. In general, larger hotel chains and boutique hotels should have generators to provide uninterrupted power supply, but smaller hotels and guesthouses may not have consistent access to diesel to run their generators. ⛽️ There are no fuel lines but somewhat limited supply still, but the QR code system is no longer required. Tuk tuks, buses and trains are still running. 💊 The economic crisis has led to a shortage in medicine, cooking gas and petrol/diesel. We brought along lots of medication just in case, but have had no issues purchasing standard over-the counter-meds like Panadol. Visitors who have certain medical supply needs should plan accordingly as it may not be possible to purchase required medication in Sri Lanka. Hospitals are open and we have not had long waits at private hospitals to see a GP. 🚫 Most countries have lifted travel advisories against traveling to Sri Lanka. However, it is prudent to check directly with your country’s foreign office on their advice, and ensure that your travel insurance is valid. The political tensions have eased, but public demonstrations may continue to take place from time to time in major cities. Long story short, I highly recommend that you read through all of the materials carefully as there are a number of restrictions in place that you should be aware of before traveling to Sri Lanka, and the regulations change quickly (sometimes faster than they can even update the website). Snap lockdowns, curfews, interprovincial travel restrictions and last-minute closure of tourist sites may be implemented. The situation and rules may change quickly and without warning. Bandaranaike Airport in Sri Lanka arrival hall

✈️ To get into Sri Lanka by air you will fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code: CMB).

🛂 Most visitors will need to apply for a Sri Lanka e-visa (except for nationals of Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles) but can be done online. It usually takes 24-48 hours for the visa approval to come through via e-mail. Alternatively, you can get a Sri Lankan visa upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, though lines can be long during the peak season. You can also save yourself some time and hassle by filling out the arrival form online as paper forms may not be distributed on your flight.

💱 The currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (different from the Indian Rupee), and the official exchange rate currently varies from approximately 300-330 LKR: 1 USD/Euro or 200 LKR: 1 AUD. Cash is king, so either exchange some money upon arrival or withdraw some from ATMs in major cities like Colombo and Galle.

📱 Local SIM cards and data packages can be picked up at the airport . You can buy a 30-day Sri Lanka SIM card from Mobitel here (the booth is located in the arrivals hall after you pick up your luggage) and top it up during your stay at any Food City supermarket or local Mobitel shop. Data is cheap and 3/4G is fairly stable throughout Sri Lanka.

👚 The primary religion in Sri Lanka is Buddhism , so be mindful of your attire when you visit temples. While there is no strict dress code it can be considered culturally offensive to walk around towns and villages wearing extremely skimpy outfits – the same goes for men and women. If you are driving a scooter you absolutely need to wear a helmet, shoes and a shirt (at the very least!) Read more on what not to do in Sri Lanka here.

💵 In general there is no need to tip if your hotel or restaurant has included a service charge. However, a small tip is always appreciated by people in the service industry (such as porters, housekeeping staff, waiters etc.) and tuk tuk drivers.

🛏️ There are a variety of hotel options suiting every budget : budget hotels can cost anywhere from US$30-50/night, mid-range hotels from US$75-120/night and luxury hotels from US$150-200/night and upwards. I personally look for comfort, beautiful décor and warm hospitality when I travel – click here for some of the best tried-and-tested boutique and luxury hotels to stay at in Sri Lanka .

Getting around Sri Lanka

Driving in south Sri Lanka

Once you have arrived in Sri Lanka, it is relatively easy to travel between cities by private transfers or public transportation (trains and buses). However, if you only have 7 days in Sri Lanka then I recommend sticking to private cars for maximum flexibility as domestic flights can be expensive (and infrequent), and buses and trains can be extremely time consuming with multiple transfers.

If you are an independent traveler to Sri Lanka then I recommend booking one-way point-to-point transfers as you go. There’s no need to book a driver who will accompany you for the entirety of your trip as you will need to figure out driver accommodation for them, and the worst-case scenario is that you get paired with a less-than-helpful or unprofessional driver who you are then stuck with for the rest of the time.

Most hotels can help you to book a private car and driver to your next destination – just let them know where you are going next and when you need the car. They will then provide you with a quotation. In general, a day or more’s notice is ideal so that they can call their contacts.

However, you can also use Uber’s intercity service, PickMe or reach out to transportation companies for quotations. I have used ACE Cabs in the past, and also highly recommend Andrew’s car service – he can be reached via Whatsapp at +94 776 042 915 , or you can find him on Facebook and contact him via Messenger if you search for “Sri Lanka Taxi Andrew”.

Tuk tuks driving on the main road in south Sri Lanka

For any journeys under 60-90 minutes, it is also possible to take a tuk tuk unless you have lots of luggage. However, tuk tuks are not allowed onto highways so your travel time can go up significantly as the coastal belt and some inland roads can experience significant traffic.

While it is technically possible to hire a car and drive yourself around for this Sri Lanka travel itinerary, the roads can be difficult to navigate and people (especially bus drivers) drive like absolute madmen. You are also not legally allowed to drive in Sri Lanka using an international driving license without the proper local accreditation. It’s best to leave the hard work to professional drivers, and you can rest up in the car during long drives.

Safety in Sri Lanka

Pettah Market Colombo Sri Lanka

The vast majority of visits to Sri Lanka are trouble free, and tourism is a major source of revenue for the country. Following the devastating Easter Sunday attacks in 2019, authorities have implemented additional security measures to protect its citizens and visitors. You can read more about the important precautions to take when traveling to Sri Lanka here .

In recent years, Sri Lanka has experienced protests and you may experience traffic or road diversions as a result. The vast majority of protests take place in Colombo and have been peaceful, but it is not advised as a tourist to participate or attend as tensions may run high. Curfews and snap lockdowns can be (and have been) implemented, though tourists tend to be exempt from these restrictions.

You may be asked to provide your passport at any check points to prove that you are a tourist. Social media bans have also been implemented without warning, so you may want to consider subscribing to a VPN service if you rely primarily on Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger or Instagram to communicate with family members and friends back home.

Violent crime against foreigners occurs infrequently, but petty crime is not uncommon. You should keep a close eye on your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas. There are a number of common scams in Sri Lanka: if an offer seems “too good to be true” or overly convenient, it could very well be part of a scam.

Sri Lankan people are generally friendly and helpful – however, you should keep your wits about you (just as you would when you travel to other destinations around the world). The most common scam is being overcharged by tuk tuk drivers; to avoid this make sure you agree on a price before you hop in. If you run into any issues, Sri Lanka has dedicated tourist police department which you can reach by calling 1912 or 011-2421052.

Woman in pool at Anantara Tangalle in Sri Lanka

I have traveled around Sri Lanka as a solo female traveler on many occasions, and have experienced some issues including verbal harassment and lewd comments. If you are a solo female traveler in Sri Lanka , I recommend not engaging/responding, and avoid walking alone late at night.

I do recommend taking certain precautions such as pre-booking airport transportation, asking your hotel or the restaurant to organize a tuk tuk for you, watching your drink when you are out and about, and buying a local SIM card so that you can keep in touch with your friends and family back home.

Is 1 week enough for Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka Shangri La Hambantota Rooms

Sri Lanka is only about 430 KM tall and 220 KM wide, but don’t let its compact size fool you: it is extremely time consuming to travel around the island and it can take hours upon hours to travel from place to place as the roads can be extremely congested.

Tea plantations and factories in Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka

So, is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka? There’s a ton to see and do in Sri Lanka: from the heritage sites in central Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and waterfalls and lush tea plantations in hill country to the beaches along the south coast of Sri Lanka – you’ll never be bored.

Wondering how long to spend in Sri Lanka? In my opinion the “ideal” amount of time to spend in Sri Lanka for a first time visitor is between 2-4 weeks. However , I’m fully cognizant of the fact that not everyone can up and leave their home or job for weeks at a time, nor might you want to.

Women walking in front of Galle Lighthouse in Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for a straight forward 1 week itinerary for Sri Lanka for first time visitors, then this is the route I would recommend. The only caveat is that you will visit fewer cities and the pace is less leisurely due to the amount of travel required.

With only 7 days in Sri Lanka you are unlikely to have enough time to venture to some of the more far-flung destinations such as Kalpitiya , Trincomalee or Arugam Bay (unless you’re traveling for a specific purpose such as kitesurfing or surfing). This itinerary also does not include the iconic train journey from Kandy to Ella (or vice versa) as it eats up the better part of a full day of travel.

Train through tea fields in Sri Lanka

If your heart is set on this train ride then you can modify the itinerary to better suit your needs – I recommend either taking the train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, or Nuwara Eliya to Ella rather than the full length between Kandy and Ella as it is not uncommon for the journey to take much, much longer than scheduled.

1 week Sri Lanka itinerary

Sri Lanka Beach and fishing boats

Ready to plan a trip to Ceylon? I’ve put together a 1 week itinerary for Sri Lanka to help you get a taste of this stunning country – it includes Colombo, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Ella, Yala National Park or Udawalawe National Park, Hiriketiya Beach and Galle Fort.

Note: This itinerary is also do-able in reverse! If you have 2 weeks in Sri Lanka check out this article instead.

Day 1: Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo

Red Mosque Pettah Colombo Sri Lanka

Kick off your 7 days in Sri Lanka by arriving into Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo. Although Colombo is often thought of only as the transportation gateway to the rest of Sri Lanka, it has pockets of vibrant and eccentric neighborhoods to explore as well as many new and exciting restaurants opening up left, right and center.

On14 Rooftop bar in Colombo Sri Lanka

Colombo is easily explored within a day , and a great place to start your Sri Lanka itinerary or unwind towards the end of your trip.

Seema Malaka Temple Colombo

Don’t miss the Red Mosque , Seema Malaka , Gangaramaya Temple and the Dutch Hospital . This city offers an eclectic blend of architecture waiting to be explored, and you can end the day sipping on a tailormade cocktail at one of the trendy establishments Colombo is becoming famous for.

Beach Road in Colombo Sri Lanka

The best way to get around the sprawling city of Colombo is by tuk tuk, Uber or Pickme (similar to Uber). Read more about how to spend 24 hours in Colombo by clicking here .

Where to stay in Colombo: For a trendy hotel in the city that offers a great rooftop bar and pool facing the ocean and incredibly comfortable rooms, check out Radisson Hotel Colombo (formerly OZO Colombo) . Opt for a room with ocean views if you want to watch the coastal trains zip up and down all day long. Click here to book your stay at Radisson Hotel Colombo!   Alternatively, check out Granbell Hotel , a new boutique hotel on the waterfront with stunning rooms and a rooftop lounge. Click here to book your stay at Granbell Hotel!

Day 2: Head to Sigiriya

Sri Lanka Sigiriya Rock

In my opinion, Sigiriya cannot be missed from any 7 day Sri Lanka itinerary. Sigiriya is a 4-hour drive from Colombo, or a quick 30-minute domestic flight away if you’re feeling fancy (mind you, it might be quicker and cheaper to just bite the bullet and take a car). It forms part of Sri Lanka’s “Cultural Triangle” and is home to the towering “Lion Rock” fortress measuring nearly 200-metres tall.

Lion Rock in Sigiriya Sri Lanka

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an ancient palace that has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of the Sky Palace offering panoramic views, a mid-level terrace that features the Lion Gate and beautiful gardens and moats on the lower levels.

Dambulla Cave Temples in Central Sri Lanka

I also recommend stopping at the Dambulla Cave Temples on your way to Sigiriya from Colombo, checking into your hotel and taking a breather, and then climbing Sigiriya Rock in the afternoon so that you can admire the sunset from up high.

Sky Palace at Sigiriya in Sri Lanka

The trek up to the Sky Palace involves climbing several steep sets of stairs (be aware if you suffer from extreme vertigo), so make sure you wear appropriate footwear! Read more about climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress by clicking here.

Where to stay in Sigiriya: Check out EKHO Sigiriya right next to Sigiriya Rock. It offers elegantly decorated rooms, incredible service and an on-site restaurant. Click here to book your stay at EKHO Sigiriya! Looking for more choices? Click here for more accommodation options around Sigiriya!

Day 3: Visit Polonnaruwa and leave for Ella

Shrine ruins at Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa is an ancient city in Sri Lanka located approximately 1 hour by car from Sigiriya. It served as the country’s capital for nearly 2 centuries between the 11th and 13th centuries A.D. and features wonderfully preserved heritage and historical sites.

Lankathilaka Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka

Today, you can explore the ancient city on foot or by bicycle and wander through the ruins of temples, palaces and shrines to your heart’s content. Read more about visiting Polonnaruwa here!

Buddha statue in Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka

I recommend getting an early start and leaving Sigiriya in the morning around 8 or 9 AM to beat the midday heat and spend 2-3 hours in Polonnaruwa, before making the long journey down towards Ella. The drive between Polonnaruwa to Ella in the hill country will take anywhere between 4-6 hours – it will be a long but very worthwhile trip towards your next stop.

Option if you are a wildlife lover visiting Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa from July to September: The Gathering is believed to be the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world and takes place at Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks during the dry season from June/July to September. During this season it’s common to see herds of up to 100 elephants bathing, grazing and playing together near the lakes. If you choose this option then you might skip Yala or Udawalawe National Parks later on in the week and spend more time at the beach instead.

Once you have arrived in Ella, check straight into your hotel and grab some dinner. Take it easy and get an early night’s sleep as the next few days will be action-packed, so you’ll want to be well rested.

Day 4: Explore Ella

Nine Arch Bridge in Ella

By this time you are already halfway through your 1 week Sri Lanka itinerary! Make the most of your time in Ella , an enchanting mountain town in Sri Lanka that has quickly become a must-visit destination for first-time and repeat visitors alike.

Ella Rock and tea plantations in Sri Lanka

The town features a seemingly endless sprawl of lush tea plantations, rice fields, mountain ranges and the picture-perfect Nine Arch Bridge.

Sri Lanka Ravana Falls Ella

Start your day with a tour of the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory to see how tea leaves are processed, and finish your tour off with a tasting or stock up on some tea at bargain prices at the souvenir shop.

Bags of tea for export in Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka

Afterwards, hike to Little Adam’s Peak (the trail begins near the 98 Acres hotel) and walk along the train tracks at Nine Arch Bridge (but get out of the way when trains approach!). Top it all off by hopping in a tuk tuk and checking out Ravana Falls.

Little Adam's Peak hike in Sri Lanka

Though I could easily spend 2 to 3 days relaxing in Ella, there’s only time in this 1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for 1 full day – you’ll just have to make plans to come back! Read more about things to do in Ella here.

Where to stay in Ella: There are a handful of boutique hotels that I would wholeheartedly recommend in Ella. The first is 98 Acres , a stunning hotel offering the most breathtaking views across tea plantations and Mini Adam’s Peak. Click here to check current rates and availability at 98 Acres.   If you’re not able to snag a room at 98 Acres, then book yourself into Ella Mountain Heavens down the road. This hotel in Ella offers an unobstructed view of the Ella mountain gap – take it all in from the comfort of your own private balcony or their outdoor infinity pool. Click here to book your stay at Ella Mountain Heavens!

Day 5: Head to Yala or Udawalawe

Baby elephant in Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka

Ready for the next leg of your epic 1 week in Sri Lanka? This one’s for the animal lovers out there. From Ella, check out of your hotel in the morning and embark on the 2-hour drive to Yala or Udawalawe .

Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka Elephant Wildlife Safari Jeep

You will want to leave your hotel bright and early by about 11 AM in order to get to the national park in time for the afternoon safari drive, which typically begins at 3 PM. Afternoon safari drives at Yala or Udawalawe finish at approximately 6 PM, and you can either stay overnight near the park or bite the bullet and hop in a car to head to one of the coastal beach towns.

Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka Elephant Wildlife Safari Jeep

Yala and Udawalawe National Parks are two of the country’s most prized nature reserves. Yala National Park is a popular destination for those hoping to spot a spotted leopard as it boasts one of the highest leopard densities in the world.

Elephant Transit Home Udawalawe Sri Lanka

Udawalawe National Park is popular among those who want guaranteed elephant sightings; it is also about a third of the size of Yala and typically less crowded. If you are headed towards Udawalawe then make sure you also stop at the Elephant Transit Home , an ethical elephant orphanage which rehabilitates baby elephants and returns them to the wild once they turn 5 years old.

Whichever park you choose, make sure you read up on the dos and dont’s of animal safaris in Sri Lanka. It is not uncommon for vehicles to chase and corner wild animals – this is a big no no! Don’t encourage your jeep driver to engage in unethical behaviour that disturbs and traumatizes the wildlife. Read more about what not to do in Sri Lanka here.

Where to stay in Udawalawe: I had a great experience at Eliyanth Udawalawe , a small boutique guesthouse by the river. Their staff are helpful and can organize your transportation as well as safari drives for you, and they have a small restaurant offering fresh homemade food. The rooms are spacious and extremely clean. Click here to book your stay at Eliyanth Udawalawe .   Where to stay in Yala: If you’re looking to try out glamping in Yala, look no further than Mahoora Tented Camps . The glamping site features spacious tents with en-suite bathrooms, an outdoor dining area under the stars and a small lounge area for coffee and tea. Click here to book your stay at Mahoora Tented Camps in Yala.   Prefer staying indoors? Check out the stunning rooms at Jetwing Yala instead. There’s also beach access or a pool complete with a swim-up bar. Click here to book your stay at Jetwing Yala !   Where to stay in south Sri Lanka: If you have decided to head to one of the town’s along the south coast to begin the final leg of your Sri Lanka 1 week itinerary, then look no further than Talalla Retreat , the perfect place for surf and yoga, or for a 5-star luxury option you simply can’t go wrong with Cape Weligama .   Prefer even more privacy? Check out Sam & Lola’s (my property) in Hiriketiya: the two private villas each feature a private plunge pool and you can easily access two of the most picturesque bays in all of the south. You can check availability or book via AirBnb here and here .   All of these hotels are within 2-3 hours’ drive away from Udawalawe National Park.

Day 6: Beach, cocktails and chill

Surfing in Hiriketiya south Sri Lanka drone shot

If you stayed overnight in Yala or Udawalawe, get an early start and head towards your hotel along Sri Lanka’s south coast to check-into your room. After a few days on the move, indulge in a little peace and relaxation in south Sri Lanka .

Kabalana Beach in Ahangama south Sri Lanka

Make the most of this time, because you deserve it after making it through this Sri Lanka 7 day itinerary. The more popular beach towns to stay in south Sri Lanka are Tangalle, Mirissa, Unawatuna and Weligama. Some alternative options for your base along the coast include Hiriketiya /Dickwella, Talalla, Ahangama, Midigama and Madiha.

Hiriketiya beach in south Sri Lanka drone shot

Enjoy your hotel pool or go for a leisurely swim in the Indian Ocean. Want to stay active? Try your hand at surfing at one of the many sand-bottom beach breaks (I love surfing at Hiriketiya beach ) or practice Yoga at one of the open-air shalas. Don’t feel like doing anything? That’s okay too! Sign up for a massage and enjoy the pampering.

Silhouettes of stilt fishermen in Sri Lanka at sunset

In the later afternoon, head along the coast to see the stilt fishermen, or order yourself a tropical cocktail and watch the sun go down. Feeling peckish? Head to Hiriketiya, Cape Weligama or Zephyr at Kamburugamuwa (between Matara and Mirissa) for dinner. Here are more ideas for how to make the most of your time in southern Sri Lanka or read on for my favorite beaches along the coast !

Insider tip: If you’ve heard through the travel grapevine that you shouldn’t visit southern Sri Lanka from June to October I would encourage you to take that advice with a massive fistful of salt. While there does tend to be more rain during this season, it is nowhere near as bad as you might imagine. Often the rain comes in heavy spurts and there’s still plenty of sunshine to be had during the day. Very rarely does it rain heavily for days on end with no respite.

Day 7: Galle and airport

Galle Lighthouse in Galle Fort Sri Lanka

Galle Fort is one of the top places to visit in Sri Lanka: it is famous for the European architectural styles while effortlessly blending in with South Asian traditions, and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

Vintage cars in Galle Fort Sri Lanka

After checking out of your hotel, stop at Galle Fort on your way back towards western Sri Lanka. Depending on where you are staying along the south coast, it will take anywhere from 1-2 hours to get to Galle Fort.

Pedlar Street in Galle Fort Sri Lanka

The fort itself is very small and can easily be explored on foot within 2-3 hours, but it’s a great place to grab lunch if you’re hungry – we love Sugar Bistro and Minute by Tuk Tuk in the Dutch Hospital, Poonie’s Kitchen for healthy options and Il Gelato for a sweet treat. Need to stock up on some souvenirs for friends and family back home? Check out Urban Island, Barefoot Gallery or Stick No Bills. Make sure you set aside some time to walk along the fort ramparts as well! Read more about visiting Galle Fort here.

If you can bear to tear yourself away from Galle it should take you 2 hours or so to get to Bandaranaike International Airport. And that concludes your 1 week in Sri Lanka!

I love how comprehensive this itinerary is 🙂 Thank you so much!

Thanks for checking this out!

Hi! Thanks for this great itinerary. I wanted to do the train from Ella to Kandy — how would you recommend I incorporate this into this trip? Thanks!

Hi Helena, you might want to check out this post instead: https://www.yogawinetravel.com/see-sri-lanka-a-two-week-itinerary-for-the-pearl-of-the-indian-ocean/

If you only have 1 week in Sri Lanka and are eager to take the Kandy to Ella/Ella to Kandy train then I would recommend you skip Sigiriya and substitute it for Kandy instead. So you would spend approximately 2 days in Kandy instead of 2 days in Sigiriya/Polonnaruwa. Here’s a guide that you might find helpful for Kandy: https://www.yogawinetravel.com/things-to-do-in-kandy-sri-lanka/

Thank you for sharing the itinerary. What do you recommend- Ella or Nuwara Eliya? We have 1.5 years old baby with us, considering both the hill stations we want to visit either of the one.

Hi Sumita, definitely Ella. Book 98 Acres if you can – you won’t regret it!

Thanks so much for this itinerary! QQ: do you think it’s feasible to do this all on a scooter?

I suppose you could, but scooters are not allowed on highways and the roads in/out of Ella are very windy. I really wouldn’t recommend doing the whole trip on a scooter as the traffic and driving conditions in Sri Lanka can be extremely hectic.

The Ultimate 10-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary (2024)

Itinerary for 10 days in Sri Lanka

With its white-sanded beaches, mystical cave temples and beautiful nature, Sri Lanka has a lot to offer. This tropical island is home to amazing landmarks like Sigiriya’s Lion Rock, Ella’s Nine Arch Bridge and Dambulla’s cave temples. This 10-day itinerary for Sri Lanka will bring you to the country’s most iconic places .

Being one of the cheapest Asian countries , Sri Lanka is an excellent destination for budget travellers. It’s a country that history buffs, culture lovers and nature or beach lovers will adore.

Sri Lanka was the first country I visited when I started travelling full-time and I travelled around here for 2,5 months. This itinerary includes all of the highlights of my trip that can be seen in 10 days.

But without further ado, here’s the ultimate travel itinerary to make the most out of your 10 days in beautiful Sri Lanka!

10-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary for First Timers

Ella Rock Hike in Sri Lanka

This itinerary is a little packed so that it can include the highlights of Sri Lanka in just 10 days. If you have more time, then you could stay in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella or somewhere else for a little longer. It all depends on your personal preferences.

If you would like to take it a bit slower, you could consider skipping your least favourite destination and spending more time somewhere else. We all have a different style of travelling , after all!

  • Day 1: Colombo

Colombo, Sri Lanka, a cheap Asian destination

Most of the Sri Lankan itineraries don’t include the island’s capital, Colombo, and many people decide to skip it. However, there are quite some nice things to see in this underrated city.

With its rich history , interesting museums and colonial buildings , Colombo is a perfect introduction to Sri Lanka. You will most likely land at Colombo’s airport when you enter the country, and this is the perfect opportunity to spend a day in this bustling city!

All in all, if you’re asking me, Colombo is worth visiting for a day.

🛕 Highlights of Colombo:

  • Seema Malakaya: This Buddhist temple is one of my favourite places in Colombo! It was constructed in the late 19th century and it’s beautifully located by Beira Lake. Besides serving as a temple, it’s also a learning centre.
  • Gangaramaya Vihara Temple: Built around a sacred Bodhiya tree, this is one of the most important temples in Colombo. It houses a large amount of Buddha statues and dates back to the late 19th century.
  • National Museum: This is Sri Lanka’s largest museum and you will find many artefacts here. During a visit to this museum, you will learn a lot about Sri Lanka’s interesting history, from ancient times until its colonisation.
  • Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid): With its red and white colours and unique design, this unique mosque looks like it’s made of candy. It was completed in 1909, which makes it one of the oldest mosques in Colombo. The mosque is located in the Pettah area, which is worth exploring too!
  • Galle Face Green: If you want to catch a glimpse of local life in Colombo, then Galle Face Green is the place to be. Its oceanfront promenade is the place where the locals head to relax or play with their children.
  • Colonial buildings: You will find plenty of beautiful colonial buildings in Colombo’s fort area. These buildings date back to the Dutch and British eras. Some examples are Cargills Department Store, St Peter’s Church and the Old Galle Buck Lighthouse.
  • Day 2 – 3: Sigiriya

Famous landmarks in Asia: Sigiriya

Next, it’s time to head to Sigiriya , this town is part of the famous cultural triangle of Sri Lanka . It takes about 5 hours to get here from Colombo by train or 3,5 hours by private taxi.

Sigiriya is nestled in between lush green jungles and it’s home to the world-famous Lion Rock. This is one of the most famous landmarks in Asia .

For this itinerary, I would recommend stopping by the Dambulla Cave Temple on day 2 and then heading to Pidurangala Rock for sunrise on day 3.

After watching the sunrise at Pidurangala, you can head to the beautiful ancient city of Polonnaruwa . This is a 57 km (35.7 mi) drive from Sigiriya. You can either reach Polonnaruwa by local bus from Dambulla or by private car.

🛕 Highlights of Sigiriya :

  • Pidurangala Rock: Watching the sunset over Lion Rock at Pidurangala Rock is definitely the best thing to do in Sigiriya! It’s a 30 to 40-minute hike up to reach the viewpoint and it’s one of these bucket list experiences in Sri Lanka .
  • Lion Rock: Although Lion Rock can be visited, the entry ticket is quite expensive for foreigners ($30) and you will have a more beautiful view from Pidurangala Rock. I didn’t visit Lion Rock myself, so I wouldn’t know, but the opinions vary. Some people say it’s not worth the high entry fee while others say it’s a must-visit attraction in Sigiriya.
  • Dambulla Cave Temple: These astonishing temples are a 20 km (12 mi) tuk-tuk ride from Sigiriya and it’s an additional short hike up a stairway to reach them. You will find five Buddhist cave shrines here, each of them containing beautiful statues. These temples date back to the 2nd century BCE.
  • Polonnaruwa : The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is 57 km (35 mi) from Sigiriya. You can reach it by taking the local bus or a private taxi. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura was destroyed in 993. This is a must-see for history buffs – there are plenty of beautiful ruins to see here.
  • Day 4: Kandy

Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Depending on your mode of transport, it takes 2 to 3 hours to get from Sigiriya to Kandy – around 2 hours by private car or about 3 hours by local bus. Head here in the early morning so that you have enough time to explore the city.

After arriving in Kandy, I would head to the botanical gardens , visit the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue next and finish the day at Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Tooth . The best time to visit the latter is between 5 pm and 7 pm when monks perform rituals here.

🛕 Highlights of Kandy:

  • Temple of the Tooth: This is the absolute highlight in Kandy. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth is one of the most important Buddhist temples in the world. It’s said to house the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha and monks perform rituals here every day.
  • Peradeniya Botanical Garden: There’s also a gorgeous botanical garden in Kandy. This garden dates back to the 14th century and you will find around 4,000 different plant species here.
  • Kandy Lake: Kandy Lake is a nice place for a short stroll. It’s located close to the Temple of the Tooth, so these are ideal to combine.
  • Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue : This giant Buddha statue towers over Kandy and it can be seen from many places in the city. It’s a 2 km (1.2 mi) hike or tuk-tuk ride up steep streets if you want to see it up close.

Tip: If you have more time to spare in Kandy or if this seems like a place you’d enjoy, consider heading to the unique Ambuluwawa Tower . It takes about 1,5 hours to get here from Kandy and it’s spectacular!

Day 5: Nuwara Eliya (train ride from Ella to Kandy)

sri lanka travel highlights

Today, it’s time to take part 1 of one of the most beautiful train rides in the world – the ride from Kandy to Ella . This is an absolute must on any Sri Lanka itinerary.

As the train ride from Kandy to Ella is quite a long journey of 7 to 8 hours, Nuwara Eliya is the perfect place to stop in between. On top of that, splitting the journey in two will give you a greater chance of finding a seat by the window.

Beautiful tea plantations surround the town of Nuwara Eliya and it’s less touristy than Ella. Besides its beautiful green tea plantations , Nuwara Eliya is also famous for its waterfalls and British colonial buildings .

It will take around 3,5 hours to get from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya so make sure to leave early so that you have the rest of the day left to visit the place.

🛕 Highlights of Nuwara Eliya:

  • Waterfalls: There are plenty of beautiful waterfalls to visit in Nuwara Eliya . I visited Ramboda Falls and Bomburu Falls , and loved both of them! If you’re short on time, you could head to Lover’s Leap Waterfall instead. These falls are just a short drive from the town of Nuwara Eliya. Do make sure to ask if there’s water flowing first because sometimes it’s dry.
  • Post office: Nuwara Eliya’s post office is located in the centre of the town. It was constructed by the British in 1894 and, like many buildings in Nuwara Eliya, it looks super British.
  • Tea plantations: There are lots of tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya and most of them offer free tours and free tea tasting! I visited Damro Tea but there are many others, so you could even visit a few.

Day 6 & 7: Ella

sri lanka travel highlights

After visiting Nuwara Eliya, it’s time to hop on the train to Ella. This is another beautiful train ride that takes about 3 to 4 hours.

There are plenty of things to do in Ella and this is one of my favourite destinations in Sri Lanka! This small town is surrounded by nature and offers plenty of great hiking opportunities. You will find lush green jungle hills, beautiful tea plantations and amazing waterfalls here.

Once you’ve arrived in Ella and rested a bit, you could head to the Nine Arch Bridge , which is a short hike from the centre.

On day 7, I would recommend doing the Little Adam’s Peak hike for sunrise , it’s truly magnificent!

After that, you can either marvel around the stunning tea plantations at Lipton’s Seat , head to the beautiful Diyaluma Falls or hike up Ella Rock . It all depends on your interests.

🛕 Highlights of Ella:

  • Nine Arch Bridge: This photogenic colonial bridge was built by the British in 1921 and its name comes from the bridge’s nine arches. It’s located 2,5 km (1.9 mi) from the main street. You can either walk from here or take a tuk-tuk to the starting point of the path. From here, it’s a 10-minute walk to reach the bridge. This is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks .
  • Little Adam’s Peak: Hiking up to Little Adam’s Peak for sunrise was one of my favourite things to do in Sri Lanka! It’s an easy, 1-hour hike from Ella’s main street and the view from the top is spectacular!
  • Ella Rock: This hike is a little more challenging than the hike to Little Adam’s Peak. It will take you over train tracks and through beautiful sceneries. Although I loved both of these hikes, I would suggest going to Little Adam’s Peak if you can’t do both.
  • Diyaluma Falls: Head to Diyaluma Falls if you’re a waterfall lover. These are Sri Lanka’s second-highest falls and you can cool off in its natural pools. It’s a 1-hour ride plus a short hike to get to Diyaluma Falls.
  • Lipton’s Seat: If you can’t get enough of tea plantations then Lipton’s Seat is a must-visit. Located 30 km (18 mi) from Ella, this is the scenic viewpoint in the middle of tea plantations where Mister Lipton himself used to sit to look at his property.

Eco tip:  It might be tempting, but please don’t fly your drone at the Nine Arch Bridge as it upsets the bees. Bee attacks happen here daily and drones cause them.

Day 8 – 9: Mirissa

sri lanka travel highlights

I have visited quite some beaches in Sri Lanka and Mirissa was my favourite one – even though I’m not the biggest beach lover.

If you’re travelling by local bus, you will have to take the bus from Ella to Matara (4 hours) first and take another bus to Mirissa from here. The journey takes about 4,5 hours in total.

Mirissa is the perfect place to relax a bit after having completed 7 days of this 10-day itinerary for Sri Lanka. You will find white-sanded beaches with palm trees here.

There are some nice places to visit and fun things to do in Mirissa . One of this town’s highlights is Coconut Tree Hill , which went viral on Instagram a couple of years ago. But Mirissa is also a nice place to go snorkelling and swim in the sea .

🛕 Highlights of Mirissa

  • Coconut Tree Hill: This is one of the most Instagrammable places in Sri Lanka! This beautiful mound is full of palm trees and you can see the sea in the background. Do make sure to go early if you want to avoid hordes of crowds. I visited around 7:30 (in late February) and, unfortunately, it was already pretty packed.
  • Mirissa beach: Relaxing in one of the beach bars, swimming and snorkelling in the sea are some of the best things to do at this beautiful beach.
  • Parrot Rock viewpoint : This small island can easily be accessed from Mirissa Beach and from here, you will have the most beautiful view over the beach.
  • Secret Beach: Secret Beach is a small, hidden beach where not too many people head to. It’s a 30-minute walk to get here from Mirissa Beach and when I visited it in the morning, it was empty!
  • Day 10: Galle

Galle in Sri Lanka

It takes a little over an hour to get from Mirissa to Galle by train. This charming, fortified city was built by the Portuguese and later conquered by the Dutch. In the olden days, it was used as a trading port for spices and other goods.

The best things to do in Galle are to wander around its charming streets , drink juice at one of its lovely cafes and admire the beautiful colonial architecture .

Galle is quite small (that rhymes) and it doesn’t take too long to cover the centre, so it’s okay to take it slow, shop for some nice Sri Lankan souvenirs and relax on this last day!

🛕 Highlights of Galle

  • Lighthouse: This is Galle’s most famous sight and it’s super photogenic! The city’s original lighthouse was built by the British in 1848 but it was destroyed by a fire a little less than a century later. In 1939, the lighthouse that’s standing today was built 100 m (328 ft) further than its predecessor.
  • Ramparts: Walking on Galle’s old ramparts is another must-do in this city (they’re a great place to watch the sunset too). These were originally built by the Portuguese and later expanded to the seaside by the Dutch.
  • Colonial buildings: Strolling around Galle Fort in search of its colonial architecture was my favourite thing to do in this town. Some of the buildings you cannot miss are the Old Gate, the Groote Kerk (Big Church in Old Dutch) and the Old Saints Church.

Map and Schedule for the 10-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary

Day 1: Colombo Day 2 – 3: Sigiriya Day 4: Kandy Day 5: Nuwara Eliya Day 6 & 7: Ella Day 8 – 9: Mirissa Day 10: Galle

Peacock at Yala National Park in Sri Lanka

Alternative: Yala or Udawalawe National Park

If going on a safari is on your bucket list, then you could skip Nuwara Eliya and head to Yala or Udawalawe National Park instead. Then your itinerary would look like this:

  • Day 5 & 6: Ella
  • Day 7 & 8: Yala or Udawalawe National Park
  • Day 9: Mirissa

Why aren’t these on this 10-day itinerary for Sri Lanka?

I did three safaris in Sri Lanka, a jeep safari at Yala National Park , another jeep safari at Kumana National Park and a boat safari at Gal Oya National Park . The last one was my favourite, but Gal Oya is quite remote and it would take too long to get there on this short itinerary.

Although I did enjoy the jeep safaris in Yala and Kumana National Park, I don’t think these are the highlights of a trip to Sri Lanka if you’re short on time. Safaris here are not like they are in Africa, and sometimes, you don’t spot an animal for hours.

Additionally, I think safaris in Yala are too crowded for the animals, with tens of jeeps rushing all around and surrounding the animals.

Don’t keep this from going on a safari if this is something you want to do, though, as this is my humble opinion. Seeing an elephant or a leopard (I didn’t see any in Yala, but some people I met did) in the wild is one of these amazing bucket list adventures , after all!

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

The best time to visit Sri Lanka is between December and April . This is when the weather is at its best in the centre and on the West and South coasts, which is perfect for this itinerary.

On the East Coast of Sri Lanka, the weather is at its best from May to October. I went to the East Coast in March and the weather was nice, though. However, this is not a good time to good surfing or snorkelling in the sea.

Train in Sri Lanka

How to Get Around Sri Lanka

As Sri Lanka is quite small, it’s easy to get around the country and the distances aren’t too big. You will find the best ways to get around the island below:

  • Tuk-tuk: The best way to cover short distances is by hiring a tuk-tuk. Do make sure to negotiate the price in advance though, as tuk-tuk drivers charge more for foreigners. You can also use the Pick Me app , it works just like Uber, and this way, you will get a fair price immediately.
  • Rent a tuk-tuk: I didn’t do it myself (yet) but renting your own tuk-tuk is probably the coolest (and most flexible) way to get around Sri Lanka!
  • Local bus: Local buses are cheap, efficient and easy to take. Together with the train, this was my preferred method of transportation in Sri Lanka.
  • Train: You cannot go to Sri Lanka and not take the train (think of the famous ride from Kandy to Ella, for example). Although trains in Sri Lanka aren’t the most comfortable and they’re often cramped (you can book in advance and there are different classes, though), travelling by train is a great way to see more of the country’s stunning landscapes!
  • Rent a scooter: This is the easiest and most flexible way to cover shorter distances in Sri Lanka. You will find places that rent scooters all over the country.

I never booked a ticket in advance when I took the train or the bus, but you can book the train in advance if it gives you some peace of mind (or if you want to make sure to have a seat).

Sri Lanka Itinerary FAQs

Are 10 days enough in sri lanka.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island with many amazing places to discover. 10 days is just enough to see its highlights, but your itinerary will be quite packed.

How much do 10 days in Sri Lanka cost?

It all depends on your travel style, but if you’re on a tight budget, it’s possible to travel around Sri Lanka for 10 days for $250 or less. It’s easy to find cheap accommodation and food and transportation aren’t too expensive either.

Itinerary for 10 Days in Sri Lanka: Final Thoughts

The places mentioned in this itinerary were the absolute highlights of my 6 weeks in Sri Lanka solo . With its nice mix of culture , nature and beaches , it will give you a good idea of what this island is all about.

All in all, Sri Lanka is a country I really loved exploring . It has an interesting culture, beautiful nature and incredibly welcoming locals. Even though I visited the country when all the protests were going on due to the economic crisis, the locals were still incredibly warm and friendly.

I hope you found this itinerary helpful and that it helped you decide what places to visit during your 10 days in Sri Lanka!

Itinerary idea in detail

Ask us if you would also like us to arrange your international flights at our preferred rates.

On arrival in Colombo, you're met by your private chauffeur-guide and driven to your hotel just outside of Colombo. Your chauffeur-guide will stay with you for the rest of your trip, acting as your private driver and guide. Depending on your flight time, you may have some time to relax this afternoon — your hotel has a wonderful pool area and a fascinating local temple a short walk away.

Seema Malaka Temple

This morning, drive to Wilpattu National Park. Relax and enjoy the beautiful views on your three-hour drive with your chauffeur-guide.

Wilpattu National Park, Wilpattu National Park

Today, you'll enjoy a jeep safari through one of Sri Lanka's most thriving wildernesses. Wilpattu National Park is home to a growing leopard population and boasts a diversity of wildlife that rivals, if not outshines, other regions of the island.

Wilpattu National Park, Wilpattu National Park

Today you will visit Anuradhapura, the island's ancient capital and present-day holy city. You can visit nearby Mihintale, the birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhism. You will then be driven to Sigiriya.

Views of Sigiriya Rock Fortress

We recommend visiting Sigiriya Rock with your chauffeur-guide early to avoid the crowds and the heat. Upon reaching the top of Sigiriya, spend time taking in the exhilarating vistas which go on for miles and ponder the ancient ruins where an ancient civilization once lived. Ensure you bring water with you, as it’s difficult to find a vendor who sells it once you have begun your climb. This afternoon, continue to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa — a fascinating scattering of temples and palaces where a thriving community once lived over 800 years ago. With much of the site in ruins, your guide can explain the importance of certain temples and buildings, helping to give an idea of the collective history and importance of the site.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

This morning is free to relax, though you may wish to view the rock from a different perspective and include a hot air balloon flight over Sigiriya. Back at the hotel, there is a wonderful pool area with views of the scrubland beyond. In the afternoon, enjoy a private evening safari to see herds of wild elephants, and hopefully, weather permitting, you will see a beautiful sunset — this is sure to be a highlight of your trip. Please be aware that in Sri Lanka there are no restrictions on the number of jeeps that enter the National Park, so sometimes this can feel quite busy.

Wall frescos, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Today, drive about three hours to the city of Kandy. On your way to Kandy, stop by the imposing Dambulla Caves, which contain hundreds of relics of Buddha statues. The caves are accessed by climbing a long staircase cut into the rock. If you think the climb might be unsuitable, we can suggest an alternative cave temple with fewer steps.

Kandy, Sri Lanka

This morning, meet with your chauffeur-guide to drive to the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens. Take your time to walk around and soak up the huge variety of plant life. Afterwards, visit the Temple of the Tooth. This remarkable Buddhist temple is where the relic of Buddha's Tooth is kept. Please note it can be quite busy during the evening ceremony so let your driver know if you would prefer to see it at a quieter time.

Traditional Kandyan dancers

This morning drive to the station to catch your train to Nuwara Eliya, an incredibly scenic journey through the central hills which takes around four and a half hours. Your chauffeur-guide is there to meet you at your final stop to take you to your hotel. This afternoon visit a local tea factory to learn all about the process of making tea. Depending on the time of year and the location of your hotel, this may be a small group tour — your specialist will be able to advise you.

Visit to a tea plantation, Hatton

Enjoy an 8 km (5 miles) walk in Horton Plains National Park with your chauffeur-guide today. You might catch a glimpse of Adam's Peak if the weather allows. We suggest starting off early for the walk to avoid the heat of the midday sun. This afternoon is free to relax.

World's End, Horton Plains, Nuwara Eliya

Head east today to visit the Yala National Park. This is a long but incredibly scenic journey — your chauffeur-guide can suggest places to stop along the way including some wonderful tea houses and dramatic waterfalls. With stops, the drive will take most of your day, arriving in Yala in time for dinner at your hotel.

Leopard in Yala National Park

Today enjoy a private morning and afternoon jeep safari. Hopefully, you can see a range of wildlife, including the elusive leopard. With a number of water holes, there is a variety of birdlife to spot too. In between your safaris, you might like to test out the hotel's pool or take in the view from the hotel's viewing tower.

Leopard in Yala National Park

Drive around the south coast toward Tangalle today. Depending on the traffic on the scenic coastal road, this drive will take two hours.

Beach at Amanwella, Tangalle

Today is free to simply relax on the beach or enjoy the facilities at your hotel.

Palm trees in Sri Lanka

Today you will drive to Galle. You may see the iconic stilt fishermen plying their trade in the surf. Your local guide will show you around the city's colonial heart and you'll have time to wander the rampart walls and enjoy the views. There are a few small museums you might like to visit as well as a number of imposing Dutch churches.

Stilt fishermen just outside Galle

You have another day free to relax and explore the area. This evening, you might like to take a local tuk-tuk into Galle Fort to try one of the local restaurants for dinner. The fort is lit up at night, and many of the small boutiques stay open into the evening.

Lighthouse, Galle, Sri Lanka

This morning, you're picked up and taken to your beach hotel north of Galle. You are free to relax on the beach or enjoy the hotel's facilities.

Galle, Sri Lanka

You are free to relax on the beach or enjoy the facilities of your hotel. The spa offers a variety of treatments inspired by Sri Lankan herbs and essential oils or try a private yoga class on the beach.

South coast beaches near Galle, Sri Lanka

Today you will depart to the airport for your onward journey home.

Day 1 UK - Colombo

Depart on your flight to Colombo today.

Day 2 Colombo

On arrival in Colombo we'll transfer you to your hotel, where you'll stay overnight. After your flight, a relaxed afternoon is the perfect way to start your holiday. Why not pick a spot by the hotel's swimming pool and soak up some sun. Tonight, you will join your fellow travellers for a traditional Sri Lankan meal in a restaurant. You will enjoy a variety of local dishes, specially chosen for Travelsphere, including rice served with a curry of fish or meat, and curries made with vegetables, lentils and fruits, accompanied by pickles, vegetables and salads, and unlimited beer and wine.

Day 3 Colombo - Minneriya

Today a short sightseeing tour will introduce you to Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, a bustling metropolis boasting an attractive blend of old and new. Grand colonial-era buildings and Buddhist temples rub shoulders with modern skyscrapers, fine restaurants and high-end boutiques. You will then drive to Sigiriya, in the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. A two-night stay here means there's time to visit Minneriya National Park, where elephants, deer and wild boar roam.

Day 4 Minneriya - Sigiriya

Day 5 sigiriya - kandy.

Kandy is a beautiful town, and it's your next base. On the way here we're going to stop at the Dambulla cave temples, home to more than 150 Buddha images. We'll also visit a spice garden in Matale, where you'll learn how these aromatic ingredients are used in traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, and pick up some tips to take home.

Day 6 Kandy

Today's included tour takes you to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, which were laid out by British colonial rulers in 1821 and are home to more than 5,000 species of plants and trees. For lunch, you'll visit the Sthree Café, which works with women in the local community to increase their income, strengthen their financial independence, and help them become economically empowered. The café provides the women with a fair wage, together with the skills and training needed to work in the service sector. At the café, we will enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan dining experience as we're served fresh, vegetarian cuisine, prepared from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. You'll then have a tour of Kandy, where highlights include the Market Square and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most sacred places of worship. Said to have been built in the early 1700s, it houses the tooth relic of Buddha brought to Sri Lanka from the Kalinga province in ancient India in the 4th century AD. Several buildings have been added to the temple complex by successive rulers, the latest being the Golden Canopy over the inner shrine where the Tooth Relic is placed.

Day 7 Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, we're setting our sights on Nuwara Eliya, in the heart of Sri Lanka's hill country. Home of the famous Ceylon tea, it is surrounded by a lush green carpet of plantations, and en route to our hotel we'll visit one. Here we'll see how the leaves are delicately picked by hand and turned into our favourite brew. On arrival in Nuwara Eliya, settle into your hotel, then get your bearings on a sightseeing tour.

Day 8 Nuwara Eliya - at Leisure

Today is free for you to do as you please. It might be tempting to spend today lazing by the pool and soaking up the sunshine!

Day 9 Nuwara Eliya - Yala

Your day begins as we continue by road to Yala, where you'll find the landscape ranges from open parkland to dense jungle. En route you'll visit The Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe, where injured or orphaned elephants from around the island are brought and given treatment and care, before being relocated at Udawalawe National Park. As you reach Yala, look out for watering holes, small lakes and lagoons. These attract the many animals that thrive here, including a sizeable population of elephants, which we'll hope to spot tomorrow. End the day relaxing at your hotel.

Day 10 Yala

This morning enjoy an exciting safari in Yala National Park, where elephants and leopards may be spotted as well as many other species such as sloth bears, monkeys and crocodiles. This afternoon there's a guided nature drive.

Day 11 Yala - Beruwala

Your final destination is Beruwala, home to one of the longest beaches in Sri Lanka. You will stay here for two nights and en route you'll visit Galle, the port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka. Captured later by the Dutch, you'll see plenty of reminders of Dutch colonial rule among its narrow alleys, churches and monuments. You'll then visit a turtle hatchery where these endangered creatures are protected and released into the wild. Enjoy the rest of the day relaxing on the beach.

Day 12 Beruwala - at Leisure

Beruwala is a busy little town which has managed to retain its charm, so maybe head out to explore or just stay put and enjoy the facilities of your beachfront hotel.

Day 13 Beruwala - UK

Today we will transfer you to the airport for your flight back to the UK.

6 of the best road trips in Sri Lanka

Hit the road on a self-drive trip or with a driver to explore the best of Sri Lanka at your own pace © Mystockimages / Getty Images © © Mystockimages / Getty Images

For sparkling beaches, sapphire-blue waves, lilting palm trees, emerald hills and the scent of seafood hanging on the breeze, come to Sri Lanka .

The manageable size of this island nation means you can see everything on a short trip, from brochure-class beaches and elephant-filled national parks to ruined Buddhist stupas (monuments) – particularly if you hire a car and driver.

While some people road-trip around Sri Lanka with a rented motorcycle or scooter, renting a car with a driver is the easiest option. Most drivers speak English and know the ins and outs of driving in the country, including the best roadhouses to stop at for fiery rice and curry .

To see the best of the country with your own wheels, here are our favorite road trips in Sri Lanka.

A diver, wearing a diving suit and aqualung, jumping into the ocean from a boat

1. Colombo to Matara

Best road trip for beach lovers Colombo–Matara; 133 km (83 miles)

This easy excursion south from Colombo follows the path of the coastal railway , linking historic cities with some of Sri Lanka’s most famous beach resorts. You won’t find too much peace and quiet in peak season, but you will find plenty of sun-smooched sand and good places to stay, eat and catch a wave.

Start in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s history-stuffed capital city. Explore temples and markets and fine dining on crab curry, then drift south to the sands of Aluthgama and Bentota , taking time to detour inland to the charming Brief Garden . If you have the budget, this stretch of coast has some of Sri Lanka’s best Ayurvedic spa resorts. Pause for a day or two of water fun in Hikkaduwa , and drop by Ambalangoda to delve into the island’s tradition of  kolam  (masked dances).

It’s back to history in Unesco-listed Galle , with colonial-era streets wrapped around a historic lighthouse and a fortress built by Dutch colonizers. Eat and sleep well in the old center, then link through beachy Unawatuna and surfy Midigama and Weligama, squeezing in a detour to the Handunugoda Tea Estate before wrapping up in the authentically Sri Lankan town of Matara .

Planning tip: If you’ve never surfed in Sri Lanka before , the resort of Hikkaduwa offers an easy introduction to bathtub-warm waters. It’s also a hub for snorkeling and diving, with an inshore reef off the main beach that’s great for families.

An empty road stretching out under open sky at Horton Plains National Park, Central Province, Sri Lanka

2. Colombo to Badulla across the Hill Country

Best road trip for tea lovers Colombo–Ella; 240km (145 miles)

It’s not all about beaches in Sri Lanka. The trip inland from Colombo to the Hill Country is one of Sri Lanka’s most evocative rail journeys, and it’s just as impressive by road. Starting from the capital and taking regular stops to look out over the scenery, trace the A1 highway inland to higher ground and the sacred city of Kandy , home to Sri Lanka’s most revered temple.

Coming with a car and driver makes it easy to visit nearby temples and gardens and the Ceylon Tea Museum  before heading to serious tea country. Take the highland road to Nuwara Eliya through jade-green tea plantations, stopping at estates such as Glenloch to learn about the tea-making process. Check into a colonial-era hotel (we rate the Hill Club ) and take high tea at the Grand .

Roll on via the striking Horton Plains to Haputale , where tea-mogul Sir Thomas Lipton founded his empire. Visit Lipton’s factory at Dambatenne  before looping past more hillside viewpoints to Ella  to book into a local guesthouse and enjoy proper Sri Lankan home-cooking. We leave it up to you whether you snap an Instagram pic of the Nine Arches bridge just outside town.

Planning tip: The Horton Plains are like nowhere else in Sri Lanka – an eerily silent area of high country that stops abruptly at the sheer drop-off of World’s End . Pay the national park fees near Farr Inn and you’re free to explore on foot on designated trails.

Tourists walking at the site of an ancient stupa, a large domed building

3. A circle of ancient cities

Best trip for history  Anuradhapura–Kandy, 180km (112 miles)

The green plains of central Sri Lanka couldn’t be further from the sun-and-sand image of the coast. Here you’ll find the ruins of Sri Lanka’s ancient Buddhist kingdoms spilling out from forests that teem with bee-eaters and hornbills.

Start in Anuradhapura , where two-millennia-old brick stupas the size of aircraft hangers are still sites of daily worship. Pay your respects at Sri Maha Bodhi , a tree propagated from the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, and head on to the fascinating monastic complex at Ritigala .

Break from the ruins at elephant-thronged Minneriya National Park , then dive back in again at Polonnaruwa , home to some of Sri Lanka’s most impressive temples, statues and ruins. Slingshot west via Sigiriya , whose rocky outcrop is crowned by the ruined citadel palace of King Kasyapa, reached via a vertiginous stairway.

Roll south to Dambulla , where the dusty brickwork is replaced by cave temples painted in vivid primary colors. Bring the journey up to date with one last stop at Kandy, where the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is still the beating heart of modern Sri Lankan Buddhism.

Planning tip: Try to time your visit to Anuradhapura to coincide with a poya day – festivals that mark each passing full moon. Pilgrims flock to the stupas dressed in immaculate white clothes and the brick plinths are wrapped in bolts of colored cloth by devotees.

People watch elephants from a vehicle on safari in a national park

4. The best of Sri Lanka’s national parks

Best for wildlife spotters Mirissa–Arugam Bay; 440km (273 miles)

This cross-country jaunt takes in some of Sri Lanka’s most epic wildlife encounters, visiting national parks both famous and quiet and cruising offshore to meet Sri Lanka’s largest wild animal, the blue whale. Indeed, that’s the first activity before you drive on from the south-coast resort of Mirissa . Feathered friends of all shapes and sizes are the main draws inland at Sinharaja Forest Reserve , and they’re best encountered on foot with a local guide.

Roll east to meet elephants at Uda Walawe National Park (in more peaceful surroundings than at crowded Yala National Park), then return to the coast for bird encounters amid dunes and lagoons at Bundala National Park . You’ll need to loop inland to reach Kumana National Park – a much easier journey with a car and driver than by public transport – where you stand a good chance of a liaison with a leopard. Finish up on the beach at Arugam Bay for some surfing downtime.

Planning tip: Different seasons bring different wildlife experiences. Traveling in November brings decent chances of spotting whales, elephants and leopards, but the best time for elephant spotting is from July to October when pachyderms gather in great herds.

5. Exploring Sri Lanka’s east coast

Best road trip for escaping the crowds Arugam Bay–Trincomalee; 260km (162 miles)

Things are quieter on Sri Lanka’s east coast, and it’s dry during the island’s May-to-August low season, making this a great trip for travelers on a budget. En route, you can stop at laid-back surf hubs and historic towns that feel more authentically Sri Lankan than the resorts in the south and west. Start with a wave at Arugam Bay, one of the island’s most relaxing surfing spots. Stop for a day to explore less-visited temples and birding spots on the lagoons around Pottuvil.

Moving north up the coast, you’ll cross the Gal Oya river (follow it inland for wildlife encounters in under-explored Gal Oya National Park) en route to Batticaloa , where you can explore colonial relics, diverse religious sites and fine beaches. Let the coast call you further north toward  Trincomalee , where Dutch and British history nudges up against Tamil culture. Use Trinco as a base for day excursions to the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli and snorkeling with reef sharks and turtles at Pigeon Island National Park.

6. A taste of the North

Best road trip for Tamil culture Colombo–Jaffna; 600km (373 miles)

Travelers have long overlooked Sri Lanka’s once-troubled north, but with peace prevailing in the island’s Tamil heartland the time is ripe for exploring. Starting from Colombo, drift north through laid-back Negombo  and get your first taste of Tamil architecture at the Madampe Murugan temple. Stop overnight on the peaceful Kalpitiya Peninsula, Sri Lanka’s kite-surfing capital.

Before you enter the Tamil north proper, swing by Wilpattu National Park – one of the island’s more peaceful reserves – then duck onto Mannar Island to admire the baobab trees and get as close to India as you can without leaving Sri Lanka. From here on north, Hindu Tamil culture dominates; look out for vividly painted kovils (Hindu temples) as you follow the A32 north across the lagoon to Jaffna .

In Sri Lanka’s northern capital, richly spiced Tamil food is the order of the day. Feast on crab curry and tour the Dutch-era fort and the pilgrim-thronged courtyards of the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil . This could be the end of the journey, but you could also spend a day or more exploring the quiet beaches and outpost villages of the once war-torn Jaffna Peninsula to see how far Sri Lanka has come since the end of the civil war in 2009.

Tips for driving in Sri Lanka

It’s possible to self-drive a car in Sri Lanka, but most people prefer to leave the driving to someone with experience of local conditions. Hiring a car with a driver is easy, and you’ll get to visit some local food stops you’d probably miss going it alone. Operators such as Ancient Lanka can sort you out with a car and a friendly, experienced driver from US$65 per day. You’ll also be better placed to navigate any fuel shortages on the island, as tour drivers have priority access to fuel.

While motorcycle and scooter rental is not as widespread as in Southeast Asia, it’s easy and inexpensive to arrange along the coast. The roads are generally well maintained, though potholes are common on back lanes and in the hills. Watch out for wandering dogs, chickens and wildlife (including elephants – if you see a jumbo on the road, back away). Beware of speeding trucks and buses, which won’t slow down for something as lowly as a motorcycle. Try to avoid being on the roads after dark, when hazards are harder to spot.

Disappointed Hasaranga takes 'full responsibility' for Sri Lanka's exit from T20 WC

S ri Lanka captain Wanindu Hasaranga accepted full responsibility for the team's early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. Sri Lanka were knocked out of the tournament after winning just one game from their four group-stage matches. The island nation was beaten by South Africa and Bangladesh. In both matches, Sri Lanka failed with the bat. On Monday, 17 June, Sri Lanka signed off with a win against the Netherlands.

Speaking at the press conference after the game, Wanindu Hasaranga said that Sri Lanka had to constantly travel from one destination from the next for their games and had to adjust based on conditions of the same venue.

"Unfortunately we had our first match in New York and it was not successful. And then we went to Dallas for the next match and we could not adjust to the pitch there as well. I think as a team and as a captain, we (I) take the full responsibility," Hasaranga said in the post-match press conference.

Hasaranga however was heavily against blaming the pitches in the USA and West Indies. Hasaranga said that the team should have improved their standards of cricket to be able to qualify for the Super 8 stages of the tournament.

"Yes, we can blame on pitches and make up stories when we lose a match. As professional cricketers, we can't do that. All the other countries are also playing in the same pitches so we have to adjust ourselves to that. We have to admit that. That's why we come to these tournaments representing a country. We should have improved our cricket and not blame others. We could have adjusted ourselves to the same pitches as other teams are also playing on the same. I think we didn't do that. That's the main mistake here," Hasaranga further added on the matter.

Sri Lanka won a single game in their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, against the Netherlands. Their match against Nepal was washed out, while they lost to Bangladesh and South Africa.

Sri Lanka among ‘3 Must-Visit Travel Destinations for Summer 2024’

Fishermen on stilts at the sunset, Sri Lanka GETTY

Sri Lanka has been recognised as one of the ‘3 Must — Visit Travel Destinations for Summer 2024’ by a specialist contributor to the prestigious Forbes magazine.  Alongside Paros in Greece and Mauritius, Sri Lanka was highlighted for offering unique and compelling travel experiences. “Sri Lanka, another island country floating in the Indian Ocean, is a land of verdant highlands and stunning beaches. Its appeal is a blend of surf and wellness cultures, similar to Bali before its boom in popularity and resulting over-tourism,” said an article contributed by travel and business professional Kathleen Peddicord in the Forbes magazine.  It added that the island nation is praised for its blend of surf and wellness cultures, with numerous centres for yoga, reiki and breath-work emerging in recent years; with notable wellness retreats such as Kalukanda House and Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort which offer luxury accommodations combined with holistic health practices.

“Sri Lanka is a place for nature lovers, home to 22 national parks, Its Mountains and thick, subtropical jungles support a wide variety of plant and animal species. Visitors catch glimpses of elephants, otters, sloth bears, and elusive leopards on safari. The Pekoe Trail, a 186-mile path that was completed in 2023, takes trekkers through the Central Highlands, including local villages, tea plantations and holy shrines. You can also explore Sri Lanka by train, traveling easy while taking in scenic views and enjoying a unique cultural experience. In the lowlands and along its coastlines, Sri Lanka serves up soft-sand beaches with frothy, surfable waves. There are beach towns with trendy hotels and cocktail bars, as well as quiet strips of untouched sand,” Forbes article described. It noted Mirissa Beach, known for its calm, crystal-clear waters and rock formations, shows up among Tripadvisor’s ‘Best of the Best Beaches’ for 2024.  Forbes article noted that unlike some popular tourist destinations experiencing anti-tourism protests, Sri Lanka is actively seeking to attract more visitors. “Its tourism authority is investing in marketing campaigns to attract more people, while anti-tourism protests heat up in the Canary Islands, Venice, and Amsterdam, among other places,” it added.
