Aswan has been nicknamed the ‘land of gold’ due to the golden desert sands, the gold mines nearby and also due to the fact it was a burial place for Nubian pharaohs. Pharaohs used to be laid to rest inside golden sarcophagi!

Aswan is located right on the banks of the river Nile in the far South of Egypt so it’s an idyllic location to pause and watch traditional felucca sailing boats go by and gaze at river birds and wildlife.

Since Ancient times Aswan has been a city of major importance. In the past, the granite of the Aswan quarries was used to construct colossal obelisks and sacred temples. Aswan has always been a bustling trading centre and even today people still flock to the Aswan Old Market.

In this article, we will discover the many things to do in Aswan . From ancient temples, and the massive Aswan dam to visiting Nubian villages, visitors will be blown away by the serenity of the river Nile meandering through the desert landscape.

1- Contemplate the gigantic unfinished Obelisk

Marvel at the sheer quantity of granite that makes up the unfinished obelisk that lies in a quarry at Aswan.

The obelisk made out of red granite is believed to have been commissioned by the female Pharaoh Hatshepsut (c. 1473–1458 BC) for the temple of Amun in Karnak. The Ancient Egyptians liked to produce obelisks to adorn the entrances of their temples.

It is believed that the obelisk was left unfinished due to a crack that appeared in the rock during quarrying. If completed it is estimated that the obelisk would have been around a staggering height of 42 meters!

Take the visit to the unfinished Obelisk to learn about how the Ancient Egyptians managed to extract these enormous quantities of stones from quarries using the technique of ‘levering’ involving wooden planks that would expand!

2 – Admire the incredible engineering of the Aswan High Dam

The Aswan Dam was constructed in order to prevent flooding on the Nile and to provide a reliable source of water for irrigation to sustain local crops. The Aswan Dam was completed in 1970 with the help of funds from the Soviet Union.

Whilst we don’t know the exact number of workers who were contracted to undertake the construction, there were probably around 35,000 laborers employed during the peak of development!

During the construction of the dam, certain archeological monuments were relocated to different sites to reduce the risks of being submerged by water!

The Aswan Dam has resulted in the creation of the water reservoir Lake Nasser. Extending an astonishing 550 kilometers in length, Lake Nasser is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the world! While there are few crocodiles nowadays along the river Nile, it is said that there is a growing crocodile population within Lake Nasser.

The Aswan Dam is of extreme importance to Egypt because it also generates a large amount of hydroelectricity providing power to millions of Egyptians.

The Nubians are an ethnic group that predominate in Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan. They have their own language, cultural traditions, and are considered one of the oldest indigenous groups in Africa and they have inhabited the area around Aswan for thousands of years.

Take a half day trip to the beautiful Sohail Island known for its brightly geometrically patterned and coloured painted houses and discover more about the Nubian community.

The mosque itself is relatively new having been constructed in 1974 however its dazzling Mamluk architectural style makes it seem a lot older.

The mosque is elevated on a rock therefore it stands out majestically over Aswan with two soaring minarets. The name ‘El tabia’ translates to ‘fortress’ because formerly there used to be a fort on the same site.

The Coptic Orthodox Cathedral is easy to recognize with its large white domes and arches that dazzle brightly in the sunlight. If you walk along the Aswan riverfront and then turn up the hill at the end, you will be instantly greeted by this large and attractive edifice.

13 – Embrace the history of the Abu Simbel Temples

14 – Observe the Aga Khan Mausoleum from the river

Aga Khan was the 48th Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. He also was one of the founding members of the All-India Muslim League and President of the League of Nations. His mausoleum is located on the West bank of the Nile across from the city of Aswan perched on a hill in the desert.

Aga Khan originally came to live in Aswan for health reasons with the aim of improving his rheumatism. In the past Aswan was considered a place for recovery due to the dry hot desert air and healing warm sands. A sand bath is a healing treatment which involves burying body parts under the sand with the aim of easing joint point and aches!

While the Mausoleum cannot be entered by tourists, it is lovely to look up and admire from the river.

16 – Come face to face with mummified crocodiles at the  Temple of Kom Ombo

The temple of Kom Ombo is particularly special to visit because it is dedicated to two different deities; Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris, the falcon headed god. Crocodiles were highly worshipped in Ancient Egypt because they were associated with fertility and protection.

Right next to the Temple is a small museum entirely dedicated to the crocodile where visitors can contemplate dozens of ancient mummified crocs! Definitely one of the most unusual but fascinating things to do in Aswan! As mentioned above, there aren’t any crocodiles any more in the Nile River nowadays, however, there are many in Lake Nasser!

The Kom Ombo temple is full of carved reliefs on the walls and columns. One of the iconic scenes depicted on the wall is that of a woman giving birth, an insight in how the ancient Egyptians approached labour and the importance of fertility.

Other fascinating reliefs on the temple walls include depictions of ancient Egyptian surgical tools and the practice of bandaging wounds!

As mentioned above, Kitchener’s Island is home to lush and verdant botanical gardens. Before it was named after Kitchener, the Nubians called it El Nabatat Island. The museum is very new and has three different levels with 250 artifacts related to the fascinating history of the Nile River.

The Nile has been considered an important life source in Egypt since the beginning of civilization. Throughout its history, the Nile has been revered for providing a means of transportation across Egypt and helping to ensure fertile terrain for agriculture.

During a visit to the Nile Museum visitors can discover more about the 11 African countries that surround the river. As the largest river in Africa, it is astonishing that the Nile stretches out for 6,600 kilometers!

Learn more about different irrigation techniques, dam systems, fish species and children will enjoy learning about the wildlife found around the Nile.

24 -Spend time around Lake Nasser, the largest artificial lake in the world

Lake Nasser is such a vast stretch of water that it can be difficult to get your ahead around the scale of it! There are many things of interest to see within Lake Nasser for example historic temples, crocodile island and lots of wildlife for example monitor lizards, wild ducks and Egyptian geese.

As mentioned above , the Temple of Philae, the Temple of Kalabsha and the Temples of Abu Simbel are all found on the shores of Lake Nasser. It is also possible to see the Qasr Ibrim, a former major citadel of lower Nubia that now stands as an archeology site.

The rocky ruins are perched on a small island that tourists are not allowed to visit however it can be admired at a distance by boat. It is possible to do a 3 nights cruise on Lake Nasser to take in the major temples!

Other impressive historical sites very near the water’s edge for those who have more time at hand include the Temple of Dakka and the temples of Wadi es-Sebua. Dakka was dedicated to the god of wisdom Thoth and has a very formidable entrance.

The Romans extended the temple and then much later the temple was restored by the Italian architect and Egyptologist Alessandro Barsanti in the early 20th century.

Wadi es-Sebua is a temple complex built the Pharoah Ramesses II. The name ‘es-Sebua’ actually means ‘lion’ because there is a line of lion headed sphinxes that flank the temple entrance!

25 – Expand your understanding of Nubian wildlife and traditions at the Animalia Museum

Take a visit to this small family run museum dedicated to Nubian traditions and local flora and fauna. The museum is located on Elephantine island and visitors can enjoy views of the island wildlife from the rooftop terrace café. There is also a gift shop selling Nubian handicrafts.

Explore the exhibition collections of daily Nubian household objects and learn more about the meaning and symbolism of Nubian paintings. There are also some mummified animals to showcase the different species found in the desert terrain and along the river.

The museum also covers interesting aspects about Nubian women’s role in society and the impact of recent historical events for example the relocation of around 100,000 Nubians during the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

26 – Take a trip to the ancient Saint Simeon Monastery

In addition to visiting many of the temples, another one of the top historical things to do in Aswan involves paying a visit to this 7th century monastery that used to be inhabited by Coptic monks.

The monastery used to be heavily fortified with large stone and mud brick walls to attempt to protect the monks from attacks. The monks used the monastery as a base camp for setting off on missionary trips around Nubia in an attempt to convert the Nubians to Christianity.

Despite the fortification attempts the monastery was indeed sacked in 1173 by the troops of Saladin and then later the monastery fell into abandonment during the 13th century.

In the basilica, it is still possible to see the traces of the original frescoes. Inside the old monk cells visitors can still see the old bench beds used by the monks and even some graffiti left by some passing Muslim pilgrims.

Many of the tours visiting the Saint Simeon Monastery also include a ride in a camel to get there. Arriving on camel back and admiring the crumbling ancient arches, courtyards and columns of the monastery transports the visitor back centuries!

27 – Pick up some authentic souvenirs at the Aswan Old Souks

When in Aswan don’t forget to wander through the traditional old bazaar, locally known as Sharia as-Souq. The street is lined with different shops selling Egyptian goods such as wooden baskets, Tutankhamun T-shirts, Egyptian robes, fabrics, essential oils and carpets.

Strolling down the bazaar is a treat for the senses as visitors will be met by smells of fresh spices, hibiscus flowers, tea leaves and henna. There are also lots of perfume flasks and bags of dried fruits. Enjoy taking your time haggling with local vendors in Egyptian style to ensure a good price!

28 – Be blown away by the Philae Temple Sound and Light Show extravanganza

The sound and light show at the Philae Temple is one of the most magical things to do in Aswan.

Watch as the lights illuminate the ancient temple edifice and colours dance off the stone and surrounding waters. The different patterns of light really make the place come alive in a surreal and memorable experience.

The ‘Bob Marley Moonlight terrace restaurant cafe’ serves up some authentic home cooked Nubian cuisine on Elephantine island. The place is family friendly and visitors will enjoy laid back vibes. The restaurant is especially good if you are a fan of BBQ or fried meats!

Ready to explore the best things to do in Aswan? From the stunning architecture of Philae Temple to day-tripping to Abu Simbel, discover Aswan’s charms with this in-depth guide. 

Set along the east bank of the Nile River, Aswan is a laidback and friendly city that will capture your heart – not to mention your imagination. 

I’ll admit – aside from its proximity to Abu Simbel, Aswan was probably the city I knew the least about before my recent Egypt trip – as a result, it was the one that surprised me the most. 

Aswan has always been an important city in Egypt and has acted as the country’s gateway to the rest of Africa for centuries. The area is unlike any other in Egypt and is famous for its distinct Nubian Culture. 

Throw in a few show-stopping landmarks, a rich heritage and its jaw-dropping location on the Nile, and you’ll start to understand why Aswan earns itself a special place in so many people’s memories.

Top 5 Things to Do in Aswan 

Visit philae temple.

Sitting pretty on its own island, Philae Temple is one of the best-preserved temples of the Ptolemaic Dynasty and one of my own personal favourite tourist attractions in Aswan.

To put it quite bluntly: it is stunning. 

I’m not going to go into too much of the temple’s history but there are a couple of reasons why Philae looks quite different to some of the others you will see in Egypt.  

First is the age: at just over 2,000 years old, Philae is actually one of the youngest Ancient Egyptian temples still standing. 

In addition to that, the Ptolemaic Dynasty was an era which saw Macedonian Greeks rule over Ancient Egypt as Pharaohs and, as such, the architecture from this period is distinctly different to that of previous eras. 

All that to say, that Philae, a temple that is dedicated to Isis, Osirus and Horus, is jaw-dropping, not only in its scale, but in the intricacy of the hieroglyphs that chart their way over every available surface. 

Stunning as Philae is today, the island you find it on isn’t actually the same one the Ancient Egyptians built it on all those years ago. 

Philae was originally located on a different island but had to be moved when the High Dam was built in the late sixties as it would have been completely submerged. 

And yes, if you think this tale sounds familiar, the same thing had to be done with Abu Simbel, while other temples like Debod were donated to other countries (Debod was given to Spain and is one of my favourite spots in Madrid ). 

You’ll see why Philae is nicknamed the Pearl of Egypt as you approach the temple by boat. There are tons of imposing monuments with exquisite reliefs and perfect symmetry, while the hieroglyphics carved onto its stone walls are some of the last recorded in the Ancient Egyptian civilisation.

Learn About Nubian Culture at Nubian Museum 

The Nubian Museum is one of the most remarkable museums that you can visit in Egypt. Aswan is best known for its rich culture and link to the ancient Nubian Kingdom. This is one of the best places to learn more about the ancient and modern-day Nubian people and their way of life. 

This museum dives into the history of the Nubian people and contains a range of artefacts, including handicrafts and artworks. There are also monuments to visit, such as a collection of statues of Rameses II and other Pharaohs. 

Just behind the museum is the Fatimid Cemetery, where you’ll get to take a tour of a unique collection of domed tombs from the Fatimid period.

Take a Day Trip to Abu Simbel 

If you only have time for a one day trip from Aswan, then I recommend a day trip to the temples of Abu Simbel, which I’ve written a full guide on here . 

I was emphatic that I was going to visit Abu Simbel on my recent trip and I’m so glad I did – the temple complex is one of the most impressive sights in Egypt… which is really saying something given it rivals destinations like Karnak and The Pyramids of Giza. 

These temples are some of the greatest in Egypt, built by Rameses II. Abu Simbel is a triumph of ancient engineering and architecture – honestly – I’m yet to meet a person that wasn’t awestruck by the sight of the temples. 

The site is about 280 kilometres from Aswan, so you can get there by plane from Aswan Airport or by bus or private car , which is cheaper but takes longer. 

Top Tip: Taking a Day Trip to Abu Simbel by Plane is Much Faster 

Visit Kitchener’s Island and the Aswan Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for a place to relax and take in the beauty of Aswan, visit the Aswan Botanical Gardens on Kitchener’s Island. It’s a small island in the Nile, opposite Aswan. It takes its name after Lord Kitchener, who owned the island. 

In 1928 he turned the island into a wonderful botanical garden with exotic plants from all over Africa and Asia. The island is a great place to take a moment to breathe and relax surrounded by lush greenery that makes a nice contrast to the arid landscapes of the south.  

Here you can take a stroll, explore the vibrant variety of plants, or enjoy a picnic of delicious Egyptian treats. 

To get there, simply nab a boat from the pier next to Aswan’s McDonalds to ferry you across the river (and ensure they wait for the return journey). 

See The Unfinished Obelisk 

Just a few minutes away from Aswan’s downtown area, you’ll find one of the city’s most famous attractions – The Unfinished Obelisk. 

This landmark is in Aswan’s Northern Quarry, and it is the largest known obelisk in Egypt. No one knows why it was never completed, but if it were, it would have weighed over a tonne. 

This impressive granite monument is one of the most important discoveries in Egypt. It provides a glimpse into the exceptional stonemasonry of the ancient Egyptians. 

Brilliant Things to See & Do in Aswan During the Day 

Explore tombs of the nobles.

The Tombs of Nobles are a set of impressive rock tombs on the cliffs of the West Bank and are where Aswan’s nobles have been laid to rest. 

You can access the tombs through a steep staircase near the Gharb Aswan boat landing. 

While it might be quite a trek to the top, it’s worth the effort. 

Do so to explore the intricately decorated tombs of princes and other leaders. One of the most notable tombs is Tomb 31, which is the best-preserved tomb on the cliffs. 

Walk Around Elephantine Island

A visit to the historic Elephantine Island should go onto any guide to the top 10 things to do in Aswan – and I’m not going to be the exception. 

Sprinkled with multitudes of palm trees, it’s one of the most scenic places in Aswan, right in the middle of the Nile River. 

There’s so much to see and do on the island. It has a plethora of ancient archaeological sites, which are now on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the sites that are worth exploring are the Aswan Museum and the Ruins of Abu. 

The Ruins of Abu is the oldest settlement in Aswan. Then there’s the Temple of Satet, a stunning 19th-century villa that houses some artefacts and shows the island’s history. 

If history isn’t for you, you can always take a felucca boat ride around the island or take a stroll past the colourful houses in the villages of Koti and Siou. 

Take a Day Trip to Temples of Kom Ombo and Edfu

You can skip this one if you are going to take a Nile river cruise from Luxor to Aswan as, chances are that the cruise will stop at both Kom Ombo and Edfu along the way. 

If you’re not, then a day trip to Kom Ombo and Edfu is a great option for seeing two very different kinds of temples within easy distance of Aswan. 

Kom Ombo 

Kom Ombo is about an hour away from the city and is part of the route from Luxor to Aswan. In Kom Ombo, you’ll find a unique temple complex dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris. 

It’s one of the largest temples in Egypt, although divided into two parts. One part portrays the story of the crocodile god Sobek, while the other gives insight into the life of Haroeris, the falcon god. 

The hieroglyphs on the temple’s walls also paint a vivid picture of the ancient Egyptians harvest seasons and special events around the Egyptian calendar. There’s also a Crocodile Mummy Museum that delves more into the cult that worshipped Sobek. 

Edfu is home to one of the most important temples in Egypt, built to honour the falcon god, Horus. The Temple of Edfu is a large complex with a stunning courtyard, multiple chambers, and tons of hieroglyphs.

Shop at Aswan Souq

Just over a kilometre long, Aswan Souq is a shopaholic’s dream. You’ll find everything from jewellery and textiles to handmade goods and spices. 

It’s also a great place to try local favourites like Karkadai, a refreshing tea made from dried hibiscus flowers. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Aswan, a visit to the Souq is right up there. 

It provides refreshing changes from temples and monuments and is a great place to pick up some items to remember your trip to Egypt. 

Take a Trip to a Nubian Village

If you’re keen to try some exciting activities in Aswan, then you might want to take a boat trip to one of Aswan’s colourful Nubian Villages. 

The main one, across the river from central Aswan, aims to preserve Nubian culture. 

You can learn about the Nubian people and take some very Insta-worthy pictures outside their colourful homes. 

I’d also recommend booking a dinner at a local family’s home so you can learn more about Nubian culture from the source (and eat some very tasty food as you do). 

Indulge in High Tea at the Old Cataract Hotel

High tea might be quintessentially British, but the one at the Old Cataract Hotel is an absolute must. 

It is one of the oldest hotels in Aswan, built in 1899 by Thomas Cook. 

Over the years, it has hosted many important people, but it is most famous for being the place where Agatha Christie wrote Death on the Nile while staying in Egypt. 

Indulge in a variety of high tea classics while taking in the stunning views of the Nile and West Bank.

There’s no better way to experience Aswan than through its food, and you can do so at the Salahaddin Restaurant. It’s one of the best restaurants in Aswan, located right next to the Nile with several terraces. 

They serve an interesting mix of Egyptian, Nubian, and international dishes – it was one of my favourite dining spots in Egypt. 

Feast on Traditional Egyptian Food at Makani Restaurant

Makani Restaurant was another one of my favourite eating spots in Aswan. Serving traditional Egyptian cuisine on a gorgeous riverfront terrace, it’s a lovely spot for lunch or dinner – the owner is super-friendly and helpful too. 

Hop on a Felucca at Sunset 

A felucca boat ride is pretty exciting during the day, but it’s even more magical when you go just as the sun sets. The ride usually lasts an hour or two and takes you around the various islands in the Nile. 

It’s one of the most scenic and memorable things you can do in the evening as you watch the sun slip away over the horizon. 

Explore Aswan’s Old Souks & Bazaars

The one thing that’s great about Egypt is that its Souks and bazaars stay open until late. If you’re not keen on walking around in the heat during the day, then you can always go exploring at night. 

One place worth checking out is the Hanafi Bazaar, where you can buy 18-carat gold items and jewellery.

Is aswan worth visiting .

Yes! Aswan is full of sights for you to explore, and is a great base for a day trip to Abu Simbel. It’s also quite different to cities like Cairo and Luxor , so makes for a nice contrast on your trip. 

How Long Should I Stay in Aswan? 

Two to three days is enough time to see most of Aswan’s attractions and the surrounding areas.

Best Time to Visit Aswan

The best time to visit Aswan is from October to April. This is when the weather is relatively mild, and there are fewer crowds, so you can enjoy all the sights and activities to the full.

Pyramisa island hotel aswan (mid-range) .

The Pyramisa Island Hotel is a welcoming resort near the Aswan city centre. It has the most beautiful gardens as well as impressive panoramic views of the Nile River and the city.

Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Hotel (Luxury) 

Sitting tight opposite Elephantine Island, the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Hotel is the ultimate place for a luxurious stay in Aswan. 

It is a Victorian building with incredibly luxurious and modern rooms. It also has a range of amenities, including four restaurants, four bars, a spa, and an incredible pool.

Obelisk Nile Hotel (Budget) 

Alternatively , the Obelisk Nile Hotel on the same stretch of The Nile offers more affordable but still very comfortable accommodation.

Guide to the Nubian Villages: A Vibrant Gem in Aswan, Egypt

In this guide to the Nubian villages, I’m sharing everything you need to know about this breathtaking hidden gem in southern Egypt. Tucked away on the West Bank of the world-famous Nile River rests a show-stopping collection of some of the most colorful and lively villages you could ever visit. The Nubian villages of Aswan, Egypt, are home to friendly locals, rich culture, spices, and homes painted in all the colors of the rainbow.

During our recent 10-day family trip through Egypt, my family ventured from Cairo to Aswan, where we explored a Nubian village. While the desert climate made it feel around 5,000 degrees, the magical sights we saw were well worth the heat.

From the area’s history to some of the best things to do in a Nubian village, we’re covering it all today. Let’s get into it!

The History of Nubian Villages

One of the world’s oldest civilizations, the ancient Nubian people first migrated to Egypt from Sudan around 6,000 BCE—predating the dynastic Egyptians. Because they were originally from Sudan, the Nubian people today have darker skin color than many other Egyptians you’ll meet throughout the country.

The Nubian people first came to Egypt in search of better farming and took up residence near the Nile River in the southern part of the country. The Nubian people built their homes out of mud and painted them in bright hues with lots of color and striking patterns, a tradition that is still kept alive today.

The Crocodile in Nubian Culture

During your visit to a Nubian village, it’s impossible not to notice the crocodiles (both fake and real!) all around the area. As a totem of blessings, crocodiles play a critical role in Nubian culture and were once used to guard the homes of Nubian natives. Many of the locals have domesticated crocodiles they keep as pets today, allowing tourists to come and see for themselves. If you see a mummified crocodile hanging over a home’s door, this means that the owner has pet crocodiles you can view. Don’t worry, it’s totally safe!

Nubia Today

Today, Nubia is spread across four regions between Egypt and Sudan. The first and most famous Nubian region is the one that sits on the Nile, which is the one my family explored during our trip to Egypt. Over the generations, the Nubian people have kept their culture alive by passing down traditional customs and their sacred language, Nuba, which is still spoken today among the Nubian communities.

In modern-day, Egypt’s Nubia region is ruled by the Egyptian government . The Nubian people are predominantly Muslim like the rest of the country. While the Nubian people have adapted to their surroundings in some ways, their unique culture is so well-preserved that stepping into a Nubian village feels like stepping back into a precious moment in time.

Names of Some Nubian Villages 

Aswan is home to several Nubian villages.  Some of the Nubian villages in Aswan include:

• Gharb Soheil: This is one of the largest Nubian villages in Aswan, located on the west bank of the Nile. It is known for its vibrant culture, colorful houses, and traditional handicrafts.
• Koti: This Nubian village is located on Elephantine Island in the Nile River. It is known for its ancient ruins, including the Temple of Khnum, which dates back to the New Kingdom period.
• Siou and Koti: These twin Nubian villages are located on the west bank of the Nile, just south of Aswan. They are known for their traditional Nubian architecture, colorful houses, and hospitality.
• Abu Simbel: This Nubian village is located about 280 kilometers south of Aswan, near the border with Sudan. It is famous for its ancient temples, including the Great Temple of Ramses II.

How to Get to the Nubian Villages

The best way to get to the Nubian villages is to fly into the Aswan International Airport (Daraw Airport) and then travel by boat or car. Traveling to the Nubian villages by boat consists of a scenic 45-minute cruise down the Nile, but will likely require some negotiation skills to ensure that you get a fair rate.

However you choose to get to the villages, I highly recommend traveling with a local guide who can give you the true Nubian experience. Our tour guide arranged a driver for our family, who then took us through a beautiful Nubian family’s home during our adventure. We even got to meet their family’s pet crocodile—an experience my kids will definitely remember for a lifetime.

Things To Do in a Nubian Village

Many of the Nubian people today are farmers and herders, tourism is also an integral part of the local economy. When you visit a Nubian village, you’re helping to put money back into the local community. Here are some of the best things to do in a Nubian village during your visit.

1.  Admire the Colorful Nubian Architecture

The most popular reason why so many tourists choose to visit the Nubian villages is to feast their eyes on the mesmerizing architecture. Painted in a broad spectrum of bright yellows, oranges, pinks, greens, and blues, the Nubian homes scattered throughout the villages are absolutely exquisite. During your visit, be sure to snap a few photos with the vibrant architecture as you peruse the area.

2.  Visit Elephantine Island

We took at short boat ride over to Elephantine Island.  The kids thoroughly enjoyed riding on a boat . Once we arrived on island we took a walking tour of the Temple of Isis which was amazing.  

This stunning tourist attraction is also home to the Nubian Museum, which displays an incredible collection of over 3,000 artifacts that provide tourists with a deeper insight into the ancient Nubian culture and history. The museum was built with traditional Nubian architecture in mind and even won an award for it!

3.  Shop at a Local Nubian Market

A stroll through a local market in the Nubian village guarantees to be filled with color, and excitement. Indulge in the delicious local eats or shop for trinkets and clothing to bring home as a treasured reminder of your time in Nubia. 

4.  Try the Traditional Nubian Cuisine

The Nubian people aren’t just known for their incredible culture and rich history, they’re also famous for their delicious food. Throughout the village, you can find plenty of charming spots to grab a quick bite to eat. One of the best ways to get to know a culture is by eating your way through it, in my opinion. Ask the locals where you should grab a bite!

5.  Meet Nubian Locals

It would be nearly impossible to visit a Nubian village without making a few friends along the way. The local people are incredibly friendly and hospitable to the tourists, so don’t be afraid to say hello and take them up on a house tour if they offer (which they probably will). If you’re fortunate enough to be invited to a community dinner, you’re in for a truly special evening of singing, dancing, and some of the best food you’ll ever enjoy.

Our trip to the Nubian villages was something my family will treasure forever. We learned so much about this beautiful culture and the amazing people that have kept it alive for thousands of years.
