Where is Hurghada?

Located on the Red Sea Coast, the Egyptian holiday resort of Hurghada stretches 22 miles along the golden sand shoreline of the warm waters of the Red Sea.

Hurghada resort is separated into 3 sections:

History of Hurghada

Until as late as the 80's, Hurghada was just a small fishing village, however heavy international investment coupled with the locations natural beauty has led to Hurghada quickly becoming Egypt's most popular beach holiday destination for UK holiday makers as-well as international holidaymakers looking for a chilled-our atmosphere and beautiful beaches.

Not much is known about Hurghada itself before it's development for tourism, it was a fairly unremarkable village known by locals for it's pretty location and small fishing industry.

Better known in the area is the port of El Quseir, about 80km south of Hurghada and a large and well-known port, used for centuries to import coffee from the Republic of Yemen.

in 1493 BC explorers were sent by Queen Hatshepsut, who's temple can be seen today on our Luxor Tours , to the legendary land of Punt in the Horn of Africa - now known as Somalia. The Ancient Egyptian explorers travelled to Punt down the life-blood of Egypt- the River Nile and then through Wadi Tumilat in the Eastern Delta and then on to the Red Sea. Evidence suggests the Egyptians would disassemble their boats, carry them overland and then use them to trade with in the Red Sea.

This successful expedition from Egypt to Punt bought back precious treasures such as Gold, ebony, wild animals and skins, ivory, spices and much more.

The port of Al Quasayr has played a significant part in the local area of Hurghada's history, and Egypt's history as a whole.

In much more recent history, Hurghada was founded as a holiday resort aimed specifically at the water sports market. With it's famously clear Red-Sea waters filled with beautiful coral reefs and wildly-varied marine life from colourful fish to turtles and dolphins, Hurghada offers fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling trips .

Due to its location and natural attributes, Hurghada is most famous for its water-sports, but there's far more than just watersports to keep holidaymakers happy.

Promenade dans les rues d'Hurghada

Lors du tour de ville, vous aurez l’occasion de vous promener dans les rues d’Hurghada, notamment celles où la plupart des touristes ne vont pas ! 

Vous visiterez le quartier populaire de Dahar et son marché local. C’est l’occasion de s’arrêter boire un jus d’orange, de mangue ou de goyave selon la saison. 

Vous découvrirez également le quartier d’El Kawther, là où les expats et Égyptiens plus aisés résident.

L'église copte et la grande mosquée

Tous les égyptiens ne sont pas musulmans et on estime que 7 à 10% d’entre eux sont coptes. Ainsi il est courant de voir des églises dans les villes et mêmes des monastères dans certains endroits de l’Egypte comme ceux de Saint Antoine et Saint Anthony (4h au nord d’Hurghada) ou encore le célèbre monastère de Sainte Catherine dans le Sinaï. 

Vous visiterez ces deux lieux de culte lors de votre tour de ville afin de mieux comprendre le paysage religieux en Egypte.

La nouvelle marina

Vous irez ensuite à la nouvelle marina, en passant par Sheraton Road, la rue la plus touristique d’Hurghada. Vous ferez une pause sur la corniche d’Hurghada, pour admirer le panorama et faire quelques photos. 

Cette balade est également l’occasion, si vous le souhaitez, de faire quelques boutiques souvenirs sur Sheraton Road ou Sherry Street.  

Repas typiquement égyptien

Il est facile d’y passer un jour ou deux durant votre voyage afin d’ajouter une touche historique à votre séjour en mer Rouge.

Qui suis-je ?

Je m’appelle Estelle, je suis française et je vis en Egypte depuis 2019, à Marsa Alam, une petite ville au bord de la mer Rouge à environ 250km au sud d’Hurghada. 

Grande voyageuse, j’ai eu la chance de parcourir tous les continents pour diverses occasions personnelles et professionnelles. Après des expériences dans le secteur du tourisme en France, au Costa Rica, au Nicaragua et en Egypte, c’est dans ce dernier pays que j’ai choisi de poser mes valises pour une durée inderterminée. 

Etant passionnée de plongée, l’Egypte m’a d’abord séduite pour ses fonds marins à couper le souffle, puis petit à petit je suis tombée amoureuse de son mode de vie tranquille, de ses habitants souriants et de son climat chaud et sec toute l’année. L’Egypte est un pays extrêmement riche que l’on ne termine jamais tout à fait de découvrir !
