Our favorite wheeled option is the Travelpro Platinum Elite Rolling Garment Bag. This carrier effortlessly fit everything on our packing list and then some — two suits, dress pants, a button-down top, two dresses, a belt, a pair of loafers, dress shoes, stilettos, a laptop, a water bottle, and a lunch box. It fit roughly 15 items on the built-in hanger and secured them in place when we zipped everything up. This duffel-style garment bag has a generous capacity and closes easily, even when packed full. Besides multiple formal ensembles, we fit a pair of heels, a laptop, a water bottle, and a toiletry bag. We like that there are lots of useful pockets and a shoe compartment, but a designated laptop sleeve would be nice.

This bag is lightweight but doesn't feel cheap at all, and it's comfy to carry, thanks to the padded straps. You can also slide it over your suitcase handle with the trolley strap. The faux leather did sustain a scratch when we dragged a stiletto heel across the surface, though the material didn't rip. Considering the reliable, protective design and organizational features, the price range is more than reasonable, even for occasional use.

All in all, it feels like a high-quality, durable product. After six months of use, we love that the nylon exterior provides plenty of protection from dust and debris as well as some water resistance. It is also spacious enough that it prevents wrinkles, even when storing items long term. With comfortable handles, a removable shoulder strap, and a trolley sleeve for slipping it over your suitcase handle, this versatile garment bag was made with plane travel in mind. Degeler's SkyHanger Garment Bag really stood out in terms of durability. The ripstop nylon exterior is lightweight yet extremely tough; it didn't tear or even scratch when we ran a stiletto heel across the surface. What's more, the water-resistant material didn't feel damp at all when we repeatedly sprayed it with water. This bag could probably get run over by a car without sustaining any damage — and any clothing inside would be protected too.

We like how the main compartment opens wide, making it easy to load with hangers. It effortlessly fits several items, and the upper button latch prevents the hangers from falling into the bag. While there's no designated shoe compartment, the interior mesh pocket works well for footwear. We also appreciate that this garment bag is compact enough to fit within a larger suitcase, or it can be used on its own as a carry-on or checked bag. Comfy leather handles are the final cherry on top.

If you're heading to a wedding (or planning a destination wedding of your own), Samsonite's Just Right Garment Carrier might be your best bet. When unfolded, it's big enough to fit a suit or a gown and has handy loops for your hangers. We should note that, while you can use it for a floor-length dress, the bottom might wrinkle in transit, so think about whether you'll have access to an iron or steamer where you're headed. You could also fold your dress down at the waist to make it shorter in transit.

Though this bag is big enough to fit multiple items, bear in mind the zippers can be hard to close when it's packed full. Still, all the other pockets and exterior compartments were easily accessible and zipped closed without a fuss. Once full, it folds into thirds and becomes a messenger-style bag with a padded adjustable strap. There's also a trolley sleeve, so you can slide it over your suitcase handle. This certainly isn't the most affordable option we tried, but we can't deny the excellent quality and functionality.

It doesn't have the highest capacity and may be best for weekend trips.

We also liked London Fog's Buckingham Garment Bag. The spacious design held three dresses, a pantsuit, a blazer, two shirts, a pair of shoes, a belt, a tie, a laptop, and a water bottle. Besides the main compartment, there are tons of pockets of various sizes both inside and out. In addition to clothes and accessories, you'll have plenty of room for things like books, snacks, or chargers. Needless to say, it makes a great carry-on.

This garment bag folds into itself and becomes a messenger bag but you may not want to tote it that way at 11 pounds when empty (heavier than most others we tried). But, although the shape is a bit bulky, the wheeled design is a breeze to roll around on carpets, hard floors, or the sidewalk. The Buckingham bag passed our durability test as well and shows no signs of wear and tear after six months of use. In the end, we think the features and overall quality reflect its price tag.

There's even a shoe compartment for stashing heels or dress shoes.

Though you can hang multiple items, we should note it has a bigger capacity as a duffel bag than as a garment bag. Still, the roomy design and organizational features make it an excellent carry-on option. Made of jacquard polyester with a water-resistant coating, this garment bag seems durable enough to withstand any mode of transport while protecting your belongings from damage at the same time.

Despite the compact design, we were able to fit everything on our packing list, including a suit, dress pants, a shirt, a tie, a belt, and a pair of shoes. Though it's too short for longer gowns, you can also fit a couple of dresses. The shoe compartment was harder to close with larger men's shoes, but it worked well for women's flats. After six months of tests, this garment bag still looks brand new and has become a permanent staple of closets for long-term protection of seasonal items.

When packed with items of various shapes, the bag was still easy to fold up — and you can tighten the straps to make it more compact (and even fit it inside a larger suitcase). This garment bag is small enough to qualify as a carry-on or personal item on a plane, or you could check it instead. Toting it around is no problem, either, thanks to the comfy, sturdy handles. Not only that, but the ripstop nylon exterior appears to resist tearing and water, so you can rest assured the contents will be protected in transit. We also like that this carrier comes in both neutrals and bright, punchy colors.

We were able to fit two dresses, a shirt, pants, a suit jacket, and a belt, and the transparent window makes it easy to see what's inside. Beyond the main compartment and hanger slot, it doesn't have much in terms of organizational features. More pockets would be useful, but for under $15, we really can't complain.

It folds in half to be carried with the attached handles. Though the straps appear pretty sturdy, this bag is made of a non-woven fabric that may not stand the test of time. That said, if you need something for one trip and aren't too worried about durability, you won't be disappointed.

Halfday The Garment Duffel : This bag was easy enough to pack, though the hanger loop doesn't fit as many hangers as others we tried. Still, we liked the structured design of the duffel and found it comfortable to carry using the handles and shoulder strap.

Away The Centerfold Garment Sleeve : Available in three sizes, this garment bag is lightweight without sacrificing durability. We wish it had more pockets and organizational features but were all-around impressed with the design.

Travel Select Amsterdam Business Rolling Garment Bag : This garment bag has a huge capacity, with space for several hung items and multiple pairs of shoes. However, the upper hook only has room for four hangers, so you might need to put multiple pieces on a single hanger.

The Travel + Leisure team researched today's best garment bags and selected 22 to try firsthand in our testing lab and in real-life settings over a six-month period. After inspecting each bag and examining the features, we packed them with various clothing items (suits, dresses, coats, etc.), plus shoes and accessories if there was room.

Once closed, we carried them around, lifted them overhead, and rolled the ones with wheels. We also assessed whether they worked best as carry-ons, personal items, or checked baggage. Additionally, we ran a stiletto heel over the exteriors to check for scratch and puncture resistance, then sprayed the bags with water to see if they repelled moisture. Each garment bag earned a score for ease of use, capacity, quality, performance, and value, and those with the highest scores made it onto our list.

Tips for Buying Garment Bags

Pay attention to length.

When buying a garment bag, pay attention to the unfolded length. This will tell you what types of items you can hang inside, like suits, dresses, and coats. Some are too short for longer dresses, in which case you can try folding the dress at the waist. Otherwise, have a plan to iron or steam items upon arrival.

Think about foldability

Many garment bags are meant to fold up and be carried around as a duffel or messenger-style bag. Keep this in mind, as folding can crease the items inside. Folding will also double or triple the thickness of the bag, which might make it harder to zip when packed with several articles of clothing.

Consider storage features

In addition to a main compartment with a hook for hangers, garment bags often have other storage features. This might include zippered pockets, a designated shoe compartment, a mesh pouch, a laptop sleeve, or a water bottle holder. These aren't absolutely necessary, but they can certainly come in handy if you use your garment bag as a carry-on.

Look for easy-carrying options

Lastly, look for a garment bag that's easy to get from point A to point B. For instance, some fold up into a duffel or messenger bag with grab handles or a detachable shoulder strap. Others have trolley sleeves meant to slide over a suitcase handle to consolidate your luggage. And some garment carriers are wheeled, so you can roll them around with minimal elbow grease.

Place your clothing items on hangers, then attach them to the upper hook or loop. Some garment bags are spacious but can't fit as many hangers, in which case you might want to put multiple items on one hanger. For extra protection from potential damage, cover each piece with a dry-cleaning bag. If there's a shoe compartment or other pockets, fill those after hanging your garments in the main compartment.

Bifold garment bags fold in half, and trifold garment bags fold into thirds. Aside from the number of potential creases in your clothes, there isn't much difference between the two. What matters more is the size and shape of the folded bag and whether it has straps, handles, or other features for carrying it around.

In most cases, a garment bag can count as a carry-on . The size limit is usually roughly 22 x 14 x 9 inches — if it's small enough, it can even qualify as a personal item. Some airlines allow you to hang your garment bag when you board in a designated closet located in the front of the plane. That said, all airlines are different, so be sure to check the specific rules and requirements ahead of time.

Really, you got a lot of options to choose from. There are five types of different suitcases for suits. Here we’ll quickly talk about each one, so you can figure out which one is the right for you.

Checked Suitcases with Suiter Compartments

The first type is checked suitcases with built-in suiter compartments. Usually, these suitcases are 24-30 inches in length and are too large to be used as a carry-on. These are great for over-packers and people who carry a lot of stuff. For some, it makes much more sense to get a massive checked bag, so they don’t have to worry about the space.

Carry-On Suitcases with Suiter Compartments

These are great for people who travel with a carry-on and a personal item, instead of taking checked baggage. Most commonly, they’re used for international flights and short domestic flights. Inside, only a small part of the suitcase is dedicated to suits, and there’s a lot of free space left for other items.

Rolling Carry-On Garment Bags

Wheeled Carry-On Garment bags are very similar to regular carry-on suitcases but wider. They usually have longer and better suiter compartments and more pockets for organization. They’re more commonly used by frequent business travelers and flight crews, instead of regular passengers, because they’re more professional. That said, you do get slightly less space inside for other items, compared to regular carry-ons with suiter compartments.

Foldable Long/Tall Carry-On Garment Bags

The fourth type is tall garment bags, which, when folded two or three times, are within the carry-on size requirements. These will usually result in the least possible wrinkles and provide the best results. That said, there usually isn’t much space for anything else, other than one or two suits or dresses, a pair of shoes , and a few dress shirts.

Carry-On Duffles with Suiter Compartments (Suiter Duffles)

As opposed to regular duffles, on suiter duffles, you can unzip the sides, and the bag unfolds in a tall sleeve. Then, you can pack your suit in this sleeve, zip both sides back together, and it turns back into a regular duffle. And what’s even better, there’s still some room left in the middle for other smaller items, like shoes and electronics. They’re great for short overnight stays, but they will usually result in slightly more wrinkles compared to foldable garment bags. Also, if the duffles aren’t packed full, the suits will tend to slide down because of gravity and get more wrinkles.

Step 2: Figure out What Size Suitcase You Should Get

Here’s what size you should aim to get for each suitcase type:

• Checked suitcases with suiter compartments: Under 62 linear inches ( width + length + height ).
• Carry-on suitcases with suiter compartments, wheeled garment bags, foldable garment bags, and suiter duffles: Under 22 x 14 x 9 inches with wheels and handles included. A half-inch or an inch over the limit isn’t something to get too worried about, because most of the time the airline crewmembers will let you pass anyway. Especially for suiter duffles and folding garment bags, because they’re made from soft materials, and can be squeezed together when you need to pass the “box test” in the airports.

That said, the size limits vary a lot between different airlines. If you’re flying only with one airline 90% of the time, maybe it’s worth it to only stick to their size limits, and ignore the other ones.

• American Airlines. Carry-On: 22 x 14 x 9 inches; Checked Baggage: 62 linear inches (height + length + width) / 50 lbs.
• Southwest Airlines. Carry-On: 24 x 16 x 10 inches; Checked Baggage: 62 linear inches (height + length + width) / 50 lbs.
• Delta Airlines. Carry-On: 22 x 14 x 9 inches; Checked Baggage: 62 linear inches (height + length + width) / 50 lbs.
• United Airlines. Carry-On: 22 x 14 x 9 inches; Checked Baggage: 62 linear inches (height + length + width) / 50 lbs.
• JetBlue. Carry-On: 22 x 14 x 9 inches; Checked Baggage: 62 linear inches (height + length + width) / 50 lbs.

Step 3: Other Things to Look out for Before Buying a Suitcase for Suits

• How much does the suitcase weigh? Essentially, you want your suitcase to be as light as possible, especially if you’re choosing a carry-on. On average , carry-on suitcases weigh 7.9 lbs, and medium checked suitcases 11.9 lbs, so try to find something that isn’t too much heavier than that.
• What material is the bag made out of? Here are the most common fabric materials ranked from best to worst: Ballistic nylon, Cordura nylon, regular nylon, polyester. The more Deniers (800D-1680D) the fabric has, the better. Ballistic nylon will usually be heavier than polyester, but it’s many times more durable, so it’s usually worth it to get ballistic nylon.
• If it comes with wheels, do the wheels look durable? If you’re getting a bag with spinner wheels, you want ones that look massive and durable. Although spinner wheels are better for moving the bag around, usually two rolling skate wheels will be more durable and will result in a more spacious main compartment.
• How long is the suiter compartment? Try to find a bag with a long suiter compartment when unfolded ( at least over 50 inches. ) If it’s too short, your suits and pants will become wrinkled at the ends.
• Is the suiter compartment fully unzippable, or do you have to stuff your suit inside? On some garment bags, the dedicated pocket for suits doesn’t open fully. This is bad, because you have to stuff your suits in from the top, and they get wrinkled. Try to find one where the zipper unzips all the way around.
• Aside from the suiter compartment, does the suitcase come with enough pockets for organization? Usually, a bag with a lot of pockets and compartments for organizing all of the smaller items will be easier to pack and unpack.
• Does it come with a solid warranty? If getting a garment bag, try to find one with a solid warranty. 10. Best Suiter Duffle (Affordable): Modoker Garment Duffle

If you don’t have the budget for Briggs & Riley, the Modoker suiter duffle will be a great short-term alternative.

The principle on the Modoker duffle is identical to Briggs & Riley – you can unzip both sides, and the bag turns into a long garment sleeve. Inside you can fit up to two suits, which won’t get as many wrinkles as you would in a regular carry-on. On one side there’s a dedicated shoe pocket that’s large enough to fit a pair of dress shoes or casual sneakers, and there’s still some space left in the middle. There are also quite a few other additional pockets for organizing all the smaller items.

Of course, because this duffle is so affordable, it’s built from regular polyester, instead of ballistic nylon. You also don’t get a solid warranty, and handles/zippers are built from less durable materials. Another favorite of mine comes from Monos, one of our editors' go-to brands for chic and durable luggage . I turn to this slim, lightweight garment sleeve when I'm limited on packing space in my suitcase but still want to keep a special dress or two protected. It holds three pieces of clothing and can be folded down into the shape of a briefcase to fit neatly in a carry-on. It also comes with a limited  lifetime warranty  so you can rest assured that your investment will last for years to come.

Whether you’re trying to pack for your airline carry-on, or simply get your suit to your wedding in pristine condition, the last thing you want to do is damage it or crease it so it can’t be worn on the other side. Today, the team of expert tailors from Oliver Wicks takes an in-depth look at how to properly pack your suit for convenience and safety, without having a wrinkled mess to sort out at the end of the trip.

The Right Bag

A little helper, pro tip: check you have everything, pro tip: know your jacket, every fold - think “roll”, not “crease”, the classic way, using a dry cleaning bag, the inside-out shoulder, for a carry-on bag, shoes, belt, and accessories, preparation.

Did you know that the number one cause of wrinkles and other issues when packing a suit, for airline travel particularly, is simply overpacking? Because of those funky weight limits, we cram as much as possible into each bag, and it is really not the way to go with something as expensive and important as your best suit. Years ago, we’d use a garment bag to carry the suit onto the plane separately, but with carry-on luggage becoming ever more limited, that’s no longer quite as practical as it once was—you probably need more than just your suit and laptop on the plane, right?

Garment bags certainly still have their uses—if you’re traveling by car, for example, one will be invaluable to help your suit arrive in one piece. And you may like to use one to hang your suit in when you arrive at your destination. But for airline travel, we advise ensuring you have a high-quality, sturdy piece of luggage instead. One with sufficient room to fit all your items in without cramping them. Make sure it has a hard shell or stiff sides to protect your suit and other items from the jostling in the cargo hold. It’s important to make sure that the suit that fits you also fits your luggage well, so you don’t damage the garment. This preparation will pay you back when you look fitted, tailored, and amazing on the other side.

If you’re able to squeeze it into your luggage allowance, a small hand garment steamer will be the single best investment you can make. If you can’t, there are some workarounds—hotels often have ironing services, or you can do a lot with some hanging time in the steam of a hot bathroom. But the ability to properly de-crease and care for your garment on the go will be invaluable to you.

Next, make sure you really do have your full suit. Do you want to hear fun stories of guests, grooms, and businessmen who’ve landed to find one cufflink, a shoe, or a belt missing? Sure, that’s fun! Do you want to be that guest, groom, or businessman? Not so much.

Dressing is a pretty instinctive act, especially if we often wear a suit, but you’d be surprised how many little details you can leave out of the mix in a rush. And if you’re not wearing a suit often, unfamiliarity will catch you. So, take some time before the rush of packing to itemize everything and make sure you have every detail—from the jacket, suit pants, and dress shirt right through to belts/bracers/cummerbunds, shoes, socks, cufflinks, pocket squares, ties or bow ties, and any accessories that you plan to wear. We suggest making a list and ticking it off as you pack for extra peace of mind.

How to Actually Pack Your Suit 

Now you have everything you need for suit packing, let’s get to the nitty gritty—how are you going to make this stiff, bulky, and expensive item fold up neatly and safely? Don’t worry—it can be done, we promise! Learning how to pack a suit for travel is surprisingly simple.

If, however, you’re really not able to squeeze your suit into the luggage space you have available, you can always consider wearing it to fly. After all, men and women alike used to dress up for travel! While it comes with an element of risk (a bit of turbulence and your inflight meal might end up in your lap!) , it will ensure your suit gets there. However, the rigors of travel will leave small creases, so don’t expect it to be ready to wear—luckily, your hand steamer will help with that!

By far the hardest part of a suit to fold is your jacket because it has the thickest fabric and most complicated construction. Take a moment to examine exactly how your jacket is built. Whether it has a full or half canvas, for example, will drastically impact your ability to fold it, as well as how badly affected it will be by the process.

When folding a letter to fit inside an envelope, you’ll fold the paper on itself, and run your finger down the fold for a nice flat crease. Take note - Try to avoid doing this with garments.

Instead, try to make gentle, loose rolls. When it’s time to unpack, this will lower the chances of having any crease/fold marks left in the jacket, which would be equally as bad as wrinkles, thus defeating the purpose of trying to pack carefully in the first place. In many cases, a deep crease is actually harder to rectify than wrinkles.

This method is very efficient, creating a neat square, but it will involve the most folds as you are packing your suit jacket both horizontally and vertically, so keep that in mind.

• Face your jacket down on a flat surface
• Fold one shoulder into the midpoint of the back, sleeve flat along the back
• You may need to fold the sleeve back toward the outside
• Mirror the other side
• Now you have the two sleeves parallel down the center back of the jacket
• Fold the hem to just under the collar
• Slide your hand under the folded jacket and flip it (lapels will be up, facing you)
• Place it on top of the rest of your packed luggage, lapels up for minimum damage

In addition to your jacket, you can pack your vest this way, as there are just no sleeves to fold.

This method will protect the fabric better, and can cut down on creasing, but is a larger fold in the end. You can use a traditional suit garment bag, or a thin dry cleaning bag—both work.

• Hang the suit inside the garment bag, with the hanger
• Lapels should face you
• Gather the bottom hem of the jacket and fold it up to the collar
• Think of it like a taco shell shape with the lapels and front of the jacket inside and the back outside

This has similarities to the classic method. It is best for satin/silk-lined jackets as it will cut down on creases a lot. If you were wondering how to pack a tuxedo in a suitcase, this could be your method of choice.

• Spread the suit jacket on a flat surface with lapels down
• Fold one shoulder to the center midline, with the sleeve back
• Fold it back toward the outer edge as needed
• Now, turn the other shoulder inside-out
• Insert the first shoulder into the “pocket” created
• Bring the inside-out sleeve toward the center
• Fold the jacket in half down the center
• Fold the bottom to the top
• (Optional) Encase the folded jacket in a dry-cleaning bag

Place it into your suitcase, on the top to avoid additional pressure. There are some variants of this “pocket” method you can try, too.

If you have limited space, for example, when packing a suit in a backpack, or if you want to know how to fold a suit in a carry-on, this is for you.

• Pop both shoulders of the jacket inside out
• Fold it in half so the lapels touch (the lining will be on the outside)
• Fold it again, in thirds

It is ready to pack. This one is easier than it sounds, so try the following video if you need a visual—it also shows you how to fold the trousers, which we are about to cover.

Now your jacket is done, let’s get the trousers packed. You can use any of the jacket folds we’ve covered here for this.

• Simply lay your suit pants out folded in half lengthways (one full leg visible)
• Place the folded jacket in the middle, around knee height
• Fold the cuffs up and over the jacket, then the belt section (in thirds)

Now your jacket and pants are in a neat square, ready to pack. 

Remove your collar stays before packing, so they don’t bend. Also, take off any boutonnieres, collar pins, etc. so they don’t get pressed flat or pushed into the wrong sections of material.

• Spread out your dress shirt face down on a hard, flat surface, buttoned up
• Fold the sleeves toward the center, up the middle
• They’ll look crisscrossed.
• Now, fold the cuff straight up the back on both sides to meet the collar
• Fold the shoulder of each side to the centerline (meet in the middle)
• Now, fold the hem to the collar

Invest in a drawstring shoe bag to pack your dress shoes . You can see these simple bags in the following make-your-own video , but they can be bought commercially, too. Grocery bags will do, but c’mon—let’s be elegant.

The bag will keep wax, polish, and any dirt from impacting the rest of your luggage. Ideally, use two and pack the shoes individually at the bottom of your bag. If necessary, you can pack them in one together—place the soles on the outside, and the shoe heel to toe. This may crush them together a little, though.

You can roll up socks, ties , belts , bracers, pocket squares, and other accessories and place them in the shoes for safekeeping and extra space.

However, we do not advise storing cufflinks, watches, or other expensive and small jewelry items in your shoes. Those are best placed in your carry-on luggage in a small, discrete bag for safety. They should not be checked due to theft risk. You can grab a cheap woman’s jewelry roll to keep them safe and easy to find. There are many styles of these—you can see one in the following DIY video . A drawstring bag or old sock will do in a pinch but if you let the individual pieces move against each other, they could scratch or catch.

Packing a Suit—Dos and Don’ts

Now you know how to pack a suit for a flight, let’s look at some travel dos and don'ts.

• Take the time to pack properly—the tired traveler on the other side with a near-immaculate, safe suit will thank you!
• Steam your garment before you go—just make sure it dries
• Consider taking a garment bag along to place the suit into when you unpack
• Unpack your suit as soon as you can and hang it
• Place your suit on top of your luggage, and your shoes at the bottom
• Throw some spare (clean) plastic bags and a dry cleaning bag into your luggage. They fold to nothing, weigh nothing, and will be useful for storage and hanging when you arrive
• Bonus point if you can arrange for the airline to slap a “Fragile” sticker on your suitcase.
• Never pack a damp garment, ever—mold and damage happen quickly
• Don’t crush, tightly crease, press, or force your suit, as this can do long-term damage
• Don’t place items on top of it in the bag
• Never place shoes on top of garments—not even your unmentionables, let alone your suit! 
• Don’t leave pins, cufflinks, boutonnieres, and other sharp or metallic items in packed suits—they can snag, catch, and cause damage
• Never pack valuable jewelry and accessory items in checked luggage

Now you know how to pack a suit for travel like a true pro! Your investment garment will arrive as safely as it left, and you will have minimal work getting it ready to wear on the other side.

Don’t be disheartened if your suit still arrives with minor wrinkling. It’s often an unavoidable aspect of traveling, but follow these steps and you will greatly reduce the problem. If possible, it is always a good idea to have a plan on how you might deal with minor issues at the other end.
