For the first time since his 2019 ‘U.S. Spring Tour,’ Al Green is going on tour.

It’s a short one though .

As of now, the legendary R&B singer has just three shows lined up this year — two in July and one in September.

First up, the 77-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is slated to perform at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre with the Colorado Symphony on Wednesday, July 12.

After that, he’ll headline at the Cincinnati Music Festival on July 21-22 along with megastars like Snoop Dogg , Jill Scott , Babyface , Jodeci , P-Funk Connection and more.

Finally, Green will close his brief run of gigs at Highland, CA’s Yaamava Resort and Casino on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Cincinnati Music Festival

This year’s festival is actually a three-day affair .

Starting Thursday, July 20 , the extravaganza kicks off at the Andrew J. Brady ICON Music Center and will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop with stars Doug E. Fresh , Big Daddy Kane , Slick Rick and Rakim .

On Friday, July 20 , the event moves to the Bengals’ Paycor Stadium. Al Green , Jill Scott , Jodeci , Midnight Star and Gerald Albright are set to handle the entertainment that evening.

The fest closes up shop on Saturday, July 21 with Snoop Dogg , Babyface , P-Funk Connection , Avery Sunshine and Norman Brown .

You don’t need to read this review. This is entirely superfluous waste of your time because deep down, you know you need to see Al Green perform live, just as everyone with a passing interest in this insane little alternate reality known as pop music does. The ordained pastor from Forrest City, Arkansas may be pushing 70, but he can still put artists a third of his age to shame on stage. If you’ve already seen him then you know you need to see him again. If you haven’t, then that small yet vital piece that’s missing in the fabric of your being can materialize by following one very simple instruction. See. Al. Green. Green is an old-school showman in the best possible way, his sole purpose night after night being to send everyone home with a smile on their face. He does so with not only his delectable voice, that is still completely intact after nearly half a decade in show business, but also with the energy, passion and commitment of a performer still hungry to please an audience as if his next meal depends on it. Sometimes this even gets the better of him. At points Green looks skyward, hands on his knees while out of breath, seemingly pleading with some higher power to keep him going through the show. That kind of commitment to a show is rarely seen today, possibly for good reason, but there are few things more exciting than watching someone put everything on the line to put on an unforgettable show. It’s not even needed with a back catalogue containing the likes of "Let’s Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" and "Take Me to the River," but it’s not in his nature to half-arse an audience like that. You want a show that’s as sensual as it is exciting? As life-affirming as it is funky? No one does it better than The Reverend.

I just saw the Reverend Al Green @ the Cincinnati Fest and was so elated to c him perform live. As soon as I was told he has was n the line up I immediately brought my tickets.

I been waiting years to c him live.

I'm 58 and I grew up on his music, Thanks to my late step Dad who was from Memphis.

Al Green would b playing n our house from Friday nite, we we're woke up to him and he was our motorvational music while we cleaned the house on Saturday and all day Sunday.

I had been cing videos of him performing live b4 the pandemic and was wishing someone would bring him to Detroit, altho I was willing to travel to wherever he was performing... Luckily I was told he was on the lineup for Cincinnati and I immediately brought tickets. I was hoping he would play the Aretha Franklin ample theatre n his crossing & commuting. (A friend of mine met him after his performance n Cincy and took a pic w/him @ the airport n Detroit)

I was just informed that he will b performing here n Detroit @ the Fox theatre, Nov.24, Thanksgiving wknd.

This is something to be Thankful for. I'll get to c him again, twice n one yrs.

I'm excited all over again while I anxiously await the date. I will definitely b n the house again.

I still hope he will come back to Detroit next summer and play @ the beautiful Aretha Franklin ample theatre. Just putting it out n the atmosphere,hoping it'll manifest.

Yes, I've seen the fantastic Rev Al Grren twice in Birmingham. travelling 2 hours to get there. What a treat. He , eventually, gave me a red rose, after trailing down the aisle 3 times to get one. He teased me by keeping it out of my reach. What a voice ge has. I went to his church in Memphis too, but just missed him. Look out Rev , I'm coming back one day, to bring you a rose in appreciation of the wonderful evenings I've spent listening to, and seeing you. Love you. Vicky.

Al Green To Return For First Live Concert Tour In Over Seven Years

GRAMMY-winning gospel soul legend Al Green has announced his return to the road this April for the first string of live concerts in over seven years. The 72-year-old singer

The eight-show run will surround Green's appearance New Orleans Jazz Fest on Apr. 28, kicking off on Apr. 24 in Austin, Texas and hitting Atlanta, New York, Chicago and more before wrapping in Los Angeles on May 9.

Revisiting ‘Private Dancer’ At 40: How Tina Turner’s Liberation Album Remains A Musical Salvation

Released in May 1984, ‘Private Dancer’ was a musical tour de force. The record saw Tina Turner shed her assured vocal talents, exposing some fragility while adding in some sultriness too, to share a powerful tale of finally finding liberation.

“How it all came about was a miracle,” says Terry Britten , the co-writer and producer of Tina Turner ’s “ What’s Love Got To Do With It .” 

The enduring single on Turner's 1984 album Private Dancer , released 40 years ago this month, was the songstress' ultimate emancipating act. It liberated her from the strictures of a music career bound to former husband Ike Turner , and debuted a new, self-possessed persona that highlighted her own rich talents as a solo artist. Decades on, the album remains a searing testament to resilience and the power of raw, honest expression.   

Private Dancer , her fifth solo outing, was the beginning of Turner's renaissance and next era. Still, some of its most powerful songs — including “What’s Love” — almost didn’t make the cut. In fact, the song’s woeful quality and halted vocals proved an obstacle for Turner. 

“After all this time, I’ve realized what the problem was and why she didn’t like it: because she was so damn vulnerable in it,” Britten tells GRAMMY.com. “She’d never been that vulnerable before in a song.” 

Turner had long wrestled with her public image and allowing listeners into her inner world. Despite her success in the '70s and the subsequent 1976 breakdown of her abusive marriage to Ike (which left her penniless), followed by less successful Las Vegas revue shows, Turner was wary of conceding defeat. 

Her career revival was largely born after Turner had made a cameo appearance in 1982 on the synth-inspired remake of The Temptations ' “ Ball of Confusion .” Masterminded by pop band Heaven 17’s Martyn Ware, the song netted Turner a singles deal with Capitol Records. Her next pairing with Ware, a remake of Al Green ’s “ Let’s Stay Together ,” was a runaway success, charting at number six in the UK and No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, in late 1983 and early 1984 respectively.

Chart success had eluded Turner for years, so by February 1984 Capitol quickly demanded a full album — with two weeks to deliver it. With Turner already on tour in the UK then, her manager, Roger Davies , raced around London seeking potential tracks. Davies had been old friends with Britten back in Australia, and reached out about available songs. 

Co-written with Graham Lyle , Britten's "What’s Love” had been skipped over by British rock singer Cliff Richard. Its rumination on sexual over romantic desire awaited a new voice. 

Turner's powerhouse vocals gave the track the justice it so called for. Just as her vocal prowess was put on display, "What's Love" also underscored Turner's ability to bring both fragility and sultriness to a song. The combination would soon propel Turner to worldwide domination. 

In the studio, Britten leaned on Turner’s dancing background to make the meditative ballad work. Turner struggled with the song’s languid rhythm, so Britten suggested she jog on the spot. “We jogged at the mic,” he says. “Soon enough, she got it!” 

Britten believes “What’s Love” showed Turner, for the first time, how empowering vulnerability could be. “She realized she could act out these songs,” he reflects. “The whole direction of her career changed in that moment.” 

Released in May 1984, “What’s Love” slowly scaled the charts, competing for prime position with the likes of Prince ’s “ When Doves Cry ” and Lionel Ritchie ’s “ Stuck on You .” “What’s Love” ultimately landed at No. 1 in August 1984 — staying there for three weeks — and fast-tracked Turner’s forceful musical renaissance. 

The arrival of Private Dancer only galvanized the transformation. 

The album was a mixture of old and new, figuratively stitching together a reinvigorated yet still rock ’n’ roll Turner. There were completely new tracks and sounds, like the synth-infused “What’s Love” and spunky, pulsating “Show Some Respect” (another Britten number). Covers of the Beatles ’ “ Help! ” and David Bowie ’s “ 1984 ,” meanwhile, were reimagined with searching gospel energy and symphonic orchestral strings.

There was an emphasis on storytelling across Private Dancer , with lyrical explorations of respect, love, and desire, paired with Turner’s frayed timbre. “ I Might Have Been Queen ” was penned by Jeannette Obstoj and Rupert Hine in response to hearing Turner’s life story. From a youth picking cotton in Tennessee to her years as a double act with Ike, Obstoj took Turner’s trying life (and lifelong interest in Ancient Egypt) to craft an earthy narrative textured by stories of grief and self-understanding. The stomping funk result was an anthemic tribute, celebrating Turner as she sang proudly of being a “sole survivor.” 

Allowed into Turner’s inner sanctum, listeners could better understand and relate to the singer’s past life — whether these were real stories or imagined tales. Songs like “Private Dancer,” seemingly about a dancer who keeps a firm psychological distance from her job as a means of self-protection, couldn’t help but be tied back to Turner’s former life as the mistreated singing partner to Ike. Turner’s coarse vocals — retelling regret with the ballad “ Better Be Good to Me ,” or celebrating self-confidence on “Show Some Respect” — underscored her toughness as she sang about respect and recognition. 

Tina Turner’s emotional depth and lyrical confessions resonated with critics and listeners, affirming Turner as sensitive, soulful and, above all, an iconic solo artist. The success of the record at the 1985 GRAMMYs only affirmed Turner's status. 

Britten, who won two gramophones for his work and joined Turner on stage to collect the GRAMMY for Record Of The Year, said that the audience — there and even at home watching — manifested her three wins that night. “In between introductions, you could hear the whole crowd going, ‘Tina! Tina! Tina!’” he says. “It was like the whole auditorium wanted her to win. In fact, they willed her to win.” 

The entire musical project was a frenzied worldwide phenomenon: the confident comeback story of a 45-year-old liberated woman. Private Dancer represents a rare redemption for a female artist over 40 — a script contemporaries have taken cues from.   

Madonna enjoyed a return serve with her revealing 1998 spiritual album Ray of Light , a record that saw her achieve renewed commercial success — and perhaps most important to her, critical acclaim. After the abject failure of 2001’s Glitter , Mariah Carey stormed the charts (and GRAMMYs) in 2005 with her confessional but defiant album, The Emancipation of Mimi . Janet Jackson , no longer suffering public shame after the infamous Superbowl incident and finally free to release music under her own label, returned revealing a more mature, reflective artist with 2015’s Unbreakable . Each album privileged some aspect of self-exposure and sonic difference to mount a comeback where audiences were invited in.    

Publicly sharing some vulnerability while also celebrating fortitude, continues to enliven the story of Private Dancer — and the listening experience decades on. After Tina Turner's death in 2023, critics reappraised the record and the seismic impact of “What’s Love.” Some said the song was an enduring “call to action” on finding independence, while others concluded that Private Dancer alone “lifted [Turner] into the pop stratosphere.” 

The record represents one of history’s greatest musical comebacks. Its emotional depth, paired with a tough if sometimes frayed sound, gave listeners a deeply resonant tale about overcoming. 

“She gave me such trust,” Britten says of recording with Turner. “I can’t tell you what a moving experience it was.” With Private Dancer , Turner entrusted listeners with her own vulnerable admissions, many of which continue to resonate and inspire today.

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system. 

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood." 

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

20 Albums Turning 50 In 2023: 'Innervisions,' 'Dark Side Of The Moon' 'Catch A Fire' & More

1973 saw a slew of influential records released across genres — many of which broke barriers and set standards for music to come. GRAMMY.com reflects on 20 albums that, despite being released 50 years ago, continue to resonate with listeners today.

Fifty years ago, a record-breaking 600,000 people gathered to see the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band and the Band play Summer Jam at Watkins Glen. This is just one of many significant historical events that happened in 1973 — a year that changed the way music was seen, heard and experienced.

Ongoing advancements in music-making tech expanded the sound of popular and underground music. New multi-track technology was now standard in recording studios from Los Angeles to London. Artists from a variety of genres experimented with new synthesizers, gadgets like the Mu-Tron III pedal and the Heil Talk Box , and techniques like the use of found sounds.  

1973 was also a year of new notables, where now-household names made their debuts. Among these auspicious entries: a blue-collar songwriter from the Jersey Shore, hard-working southern rockers from Jacksonville, Fla. and a sister group from California oozing soul. 

Along a well-established format, '73 saw the release of several revolutionary concept records. The Eagles ’ Desperado , Pink Floyd ’s Dark Side of the Moon , Lou Reed ’s Berlin and the Who ’s Quadrophenia are just a few examples that illustrate how artists used narrative techniques to explore broader themes and make bigger statements on social, political and economic issues — of which there were many.

On the domestic front, 1973 began with the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Roe v. Wade . Internationally, the Paris Peace Accords were signed — starting the long process to end the Vietnam War. An Oil crisis caused fuel prices to skyrocket in North America. Richard Nixon started his short-lived second term as president, which was marked by the Watergate scandal. 

Politics aside, the third year of the '70s had it all: from classic- and southern-rock to reggae; punk to jazz; soul and R&B to country. Read on for 20 masterful albums with something to say that celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2023. 

Band On The Run - Paul McCartney & Wings

Laid down at EMI’s studio in Lagos, Nigeria and released in December 1973, the third studio record by Paul Mcartney & Wings is McCartney’s most successful post- Beatles album. Its hit singles "Jet" and the title cut "Band on the Run" helped make the record the biggest-selling in 1974 in both Australia and Canada.

Band on the Run won a pair of GRAMMYS the following year: Best Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus and Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical. McCartney added a third golden gramophone for this record at the 54th awards celebration when it won Best Historical Album for the 2010 reissue. In 2013, Band on the Run was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. 

Head Hunters - Herbie Hancock

Released Oct. 13, Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters was recorded in just one week; its

four songs clock in at just over 40 minutes. That the album was not nominated in the jazz category, but instead Best Pop Instrumental Performance, demonstrates how Hancock was shifting gears.

Head Hunters showed Hancock moving away from traditional instrumentation and playing around with new synthesizer technology — especially the clavinet — and putting together a new band: the Headhunters. Improvisation marks this as a jazz record, but the phrasing, rhythms and dynamics of Hancock’s new quintet makes it equal parts soul and R&B with sprinkles of rock 'n' roll. 

The album represented a commercial and artistic breakthrough for Hancock, going gold within months of its release. "Watermelon Man" and "Chameleon," which was nominated for a Best Instrumental GRAMMY Award in 1974, were later both frequently sampled by hip-hop artists in the 1990s.

Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. - Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen , 22, was the new kid in town in 1973. This debut was met with tepid reviews. Still, Greetings introduced Springsteen’s talent to craft stories in song and includes many characters The Boss would return to repeatedly in his career. The album kicks off with the singalong "Blinded by the Light," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 100 four years later via a cover done by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. This was the first of two records Springsteen released in 1973; The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle arrived before the end of the year — officially introducing the E Street Band.

Innervisions - Stevie Wonder 

This Stevie Wonder masterpiece shows an artist, in his early 20s, experimenting with new instrumentation such as TONTO (The Original New Timbral Orchestra) — the world’s largest synth — and playing all instruments on the now-anthemic "Higher Ground."

The song reached No.1 on the U.S. Hot R&B Singles Chart, and Innervisions peaked at No. 4. The album won three GRAMMYS the following year, including Album Of The Year . Wonder was the first Black artist to win this coveted golden gramophone. In 1989, Red Hot Chili Peppers kept the original funk, but injected the song with a lot of rock on their cover — the lead single from Mother’s Milk .

The Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd

Critics perennially place this Pink Floyd album, the band's eighth studio record, as one of the greatest of all-time. The Dark Side of the Moon hit No.1 and stayed on the Billboard charts for 63 weeks.

A sonic masterpiece marked by loops, synths, found sounds, and David Gilmour’s guitar bends, Dark Side of the Moon is also a concept record that explores themes of excessive greed on tracks like "Money." Ironically, an album lambasting consumerism was the top-selling record of the year and has eclipsed 45 million sales worldwide since its release. The album’s cover has also become one of the most recognized in the history of popular music.

Pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd - Lynyrd Skynyrd

This debut release features several of the northern Florida rockers' most beloved songs: "Gimme Three Steps," "Tuesday’s Gone" and "Simple Man." The record, which has since reached two-times platinum status with sales of more than two million, also includes the anthemic "Free Bird," which catapulted them to stardom. The song with its slow-build and definitive guitar solo and jam in the middle became Lynyrd Skynyrd's signature song that ended all their shows; it also became a piece of pop culture with people screaming for this song during concerts by other artists.

Houses Of The Holy - Led Zeppelin

The first Led Zeppelin record of all originals — and the first without a Roman numeral for a title — Houses of the Holy shows a new side of these British hardrockers. Straying from the blues and hard rock of previous records, Houses of the Holy features funk (“The Ocean” and “The Crunge”) and even hints of reggae (“D’Yer Mak’er”). This fifth studio offering from Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham also includes one of this writer’s personal Zeppelin favorites — "Over the Hills and Far Away.” The song was released as the album’s first U.S. single and reached No. 51 on the Billboard charts. Despite mixed reviews from critics, Houses of the Holy eventually achieved Diamond status for sales of more than 10 million. Interesting fact: the song “Houses of the Holy” actually appears on the band’s next record ( Physical Graffiti ).

Quadrophenia - The Who

The double-album rock opera followed the critical success of Tommy and Who’s Next . Pete Townshend composed all songs on this opus, which was later adapted into a movie. And, in 2015, classically-scored by Townshend’s partner Rachel Fuller for a new generation via a symphonic version (“Classic Quadrophenia”). The story chronicles the life of a young mod named Jimmy who lives in the seaside town of Brighton, England. Jimmy searches for meaning in a life devoid of significance — taking uppers, downers and guzzling gin only to discover nothing fixes his malaise. With sharp-witted songs, Townshend also tackles classicism. His band of musical brothers: Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle and Keith Moon provide some of their finest recorded performances. The album reached second spot on the U.S. Billboard chart.

Berlin - Lou Reed

Produced by Bob Ezrin , Berlin is a metaphor. The divided walled city represents the divisive relationships and the two sides of Reed — on stage and off. The 10 track concept record chronicles a couple’s struggles with drug addiction, meditating on themes of domestic abuse and neglect. As a parent, try to listen to "The Kids" without shedding a tear. While the couple on the record are named Caroline and Jim, those who knew Reed’s volatile nature and drug dependency saw the parallels between this fictionalized narrative and the songwriter’s life.

Catch A Fire - Bob Marley & the Wailers

The original cover was enclosed in a sleeve resembling a Zippo lighter. Only 20,000 of this version were pressed. Even though it was creative and cool, cost-effective it was not — each individual cover had to be hand-riveted. The replacement, which most people know today, introduces reggae poet and prophet Robert Nesta Marley to the world. With a pensive stare and a large spliff in hand, Marley tells you to mellow out and listen to the tough sounds of his island home.

While Bob and his Wailers had been making music for nearly a decade and released several records in Jamaica, Catch a Fire was their coming out party outside the Caribbean. Released in April on Island Records, the feel-good reggae rhythms and Marley’s messages of emancipation resonated with a global audience. A mix of songs of protest ("Slave Driver," "400 years") and love ("Kinky Reggae"), Catch A Fire is also notable for "Stir it Up," a song American singer-songwriter Johnny Nash had made a Top 15 hit the previous year. 

The New York Dolls - The New York Dolls

The New York Dolls burst on the club scene in the Big Apple, building a cult following with their frenetic and unpredictable live shows. The Dolls' hard rock sound and f-you attitude waved the punk banner before the genre was coined, and influenced the sound of punk rock for generations. (Bands like the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and KISS, cite the New York Dolls as mentors.) Singer-songwriter Todd Rundgren — who found time to release A Wizard, A True Star this same year — produced this tour de force. From the opening "Personality Crisis," this five-piece beckons you to join this out-of-control train.

Aladdin Sane - David Bowie

This David Bowie record followed the commercial success of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars . Many critics unfairly compare the two. A career chameleon, with Aladdin Sane , Bowie shed the Ziggy persona and adopted another alter-ego. The title is a pun that means: "A Lad Insane." For the songwriter, this record represented an attempt to break free from the crazed fandom Ziggy Stardust had created.

A majority of the songs were written the previous year while Bowie toured the United States in support of Ziggy. Journal in hand, the artist traveled from city to city in America and the songs materialized. Most paid homage to what this “insane lad” observed and heard: from debauchery and societal decay ( " Cracked Actor " ) to politics ( " Panic in Detroit " ) to punk music ( " Watch That Man " ). Top singles on Aladdin Sane were: "The Jean Genie" and "Drive-In Saturday." Both topped the U.K. charts.

Faust IV -Faust

This fourth studio album — and the final release in this incarnation by this experimental avant-garde German ambient band — remains a cult classic. Recorded at the Manor House in Oxfordshire, England (Richard Branson’s new Virgin Records studio and the locale where Mike Oldfield crafted his famous debut Tubular Bells, also released in 1973), Faust IV opens with the epic 11-minute instrumental "Krautrock" — a song that features drones, clusters of tones and sustained notes to create a trance-like vibe. Drums do not appear in the song until after the seven minute mark.

The song is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the genre British journalists coined to describe bands like Faust, which musicians largely did not embrace. The rest of Faust IV is a sonic exploration worthy of repeated listens and a great place to start if you’ve ever wondered what the heck Krautrock is.

Brothers & Sisters - the Allman Brothers Band

Great art is often born from grief, and Brothers & Sisters is exemplary in this way. Founding member Duanne Allman died in 1971 and bassist Berry Oakley followed his bandmate to the grave a year later; he was killed in a motorcycle accident in November 1972. Following this pair of tragedies, the band carried on the only way they knew how: by making music.

With new members hired, Brothers & Sisters was recorded with guitarist Dicky Betts as the new de facto band leader. The Allman Brothers Band’s most commercially successful record leans into country territory from the southern rock of previous releases and features two of the band’s most popular songs: "Ramblin’ Man" and "Jessica." The album went gold within 48 hours of shipping and since has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.  

Call Me -  Al Green

Call Me is considered one of the greatest soul records of the 20th century and Green’s pièce de résistance. The fact this Al Green album features three Top 10 Billboard singles — "You Ought to Be With Me," "Here I Am" and the title track — helps explain why it remains a masterpiece. Beyond the trio of hits, the soul king shows his versatility by reworking a pair of country songs: Hank Williams ’ "I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry," and Willie Nelson ’s "Funny How Time Slips Away."

Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack

This Roberta Flack album was nominated for three GRAMMY Awards and won two: Record Of The Year and Best Female Vocal Pop Performance at the 1974 GRAMMYs (it lost in the Album of the Year category to Innervisions ). With equal parts soul and passion, Flack interprets beloved ballads that showcase her talent of taking others’ songs and reinventing them. Producer Joel Dorn assembled the right mix of players to back up Flack — adding to the album’s polished sound. Killing Me Softly has sold more than two million copies and, in 2020, Roberta Flack received the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award.

The album's title cut became a No.1 hit in three countries and, in 1996, the Fugees prominently featured Lauryn Hill on a version that surpassed the original: landing the No.1 spot in 21 countries. The album also includes a pair of well-loved covers: Leonard Cohen ’s "Suzanne" and Janis Ian’s wistful "Jesse," which reached No. 30.

Bette Midler - Bette Middler

Co-produced by Arif Mardin and Barry Manilow , the self-titled second studio album by Bette Midler was an easy- listening experience featuring interpretations of both standards and popular songs. Whispers of gospel are mixed with R&B and some boogie-woogie piano, though Midler’s voice is always the star. The record opens with a nod to the Great American Songbook with a reworking of Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael’s "Skylark." The 10-song collection also features a take on Glenn Miller’s "In the Mood," and a divine cover of Bob Dylan’s "I Shall be Released." The record peaked at No. 6 on the U.S. charts.

Imagination - Gladys Knight & the Pips

Released in October, Imagination was Gladys Knight & the Pips' first album with Buddha Records after leaving Motown, and features the group’s only No. 1 Billboard hit:  "Midnight Train to Georgia." The oft-covered tune, which won a GRAMMY the following year , and became the band’s signature, helped the record eclipse a million in sales, but it was not the only single to resonate. Other timeless, chart-topping songs from Imagination include "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me," and "I’ve Got to Use My Imagination."

The Pointer Sisters - The Pointer Sisters

The three-time GRAMMY-winning Pointer Sisters arrived on the scene in 1973 with this critically-acclaimed self-titled debut. Then a quartet, the group of sisters from Oakland, California made listeners want to shake a tail feather with 10 songs that ranged from boogie-woogie to bebop. Their sisterly harmonies are backed up by the San Francisco blues-funk band the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils. The record opens with "Yes We Can," a hypnotic groove of a song written by Allen Toussaint which was a Top 15 hit alongside another cover, Willie Dixon’s "Wang Dang Doodle."

Behind Closed Doors - Charlie Rich

This pop-leaning country record of orchestral ballads, produced by Billy Sherrill, made Rich rich. The album has surpassed four million in sales and remains one of the genre’s best-loved classics. The album won Charlie Rich a GRAMMY the following year for Best Country Vocal Performance Male and added four Country Music Awards. Behind Closed Doors had several hits, but the title track made the most impact. The song written by Kenny O’Dell , and whose title was inspired by the Watergate scandal, was the first No.1 hit for Rich. It topped the country charts where it spent 20 weeks in 1973. It was also a Billboard crossover hit — reaching No. 15 on the Top 100 and No. 8 on the Adult Contemporary charts.

A Guide To Modern Funk For The Dance Floor: L'Imperatrice, Shiro Schwarz, Franc Moody, Say She She & Moniquea

James Brown changed the sound of popular music when he found the power of the one and unleashed the funk with "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Today, funk lives on in many forms, including these exciting bands from across the world.

It's rare that a genre can be traced back to a single artist or group, but for funk, that was James Brown . The Godfather of Soul coined the phrase and style of playing known as "on the one," where the first downbeat is emphasized, instead of the typical second and fourth beats in pop, soul and other styles. As David Cheal eloquently explains, playing on the one "left space for phrases and riffs, often syncopated around the beat, creating an intricate, interlocking grid which could go on and on." You know a funky bassline when you hear it; its fat chords beg your body to get up and groove.

Brown's 1965 classic, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," became one of the first funk hits, and has been endlessly sampled and covered over the years, along with his other groovy tracks. Of course, many other funk acts followed in the '60s, and the genre thrived in the '70s and '80s as the disco craze came and went, and the originators of hip-hop and house music created new music from funk and disco's strong, flexible bones built for dancing.

Legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins learned the power of the one from playing in Brown's band, and brought it to George Clinton , who created P-funk, an expansive, Afrofuturistic , psychedelic exploration of funk with his various bands and projects, including Parliament-Funkadelic . Both Collins and Clinton remain active and funkin', and have offered their timeless grooves to collabs with younger artists, including Kali Uchis , Silk Sonic , and Omar Apollo; and Kendrick Lamar , Flying Lotus , and Thundercat , respectively.

In the 1980s, electro-funk was born when artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Egyptian Lover began making futuristic beats with the Roland TR-808 drum machine — often with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box. A key distinguishing factor of electro-funk is a de-emphasis on vocals, with more phrases than choruses and verses. The sound influenced contemporaneous hip-hop, funk and electronica, along with acts around the globe, while current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and even Egyptian Lover himself keep electro-funk alive and well.

Today, funk lives in many places, with its heavy bass and syncopated grooves finding way into many nooks and crannies of music. There's nu-disco and boogie funk, nodding back to disco bands with soaring vocals and dance floor-designed instrumentation. G-funk continues to influence Los Angeles hip-hop, with innovative artists like Dam-Funk and Channel Tres bringing the funk and G-funk, into electro territory. Funk and disco-centered '70s revival is definitely having a moment, with acts like Ghost Funk Orchestra and Parcels , while its sparkly sprinklings can be heard in pop from Dua Lipa , Doja Cat , and, in full "Soul Train" character, Silk Sonic . There are also acts making dreamy, atmospheric music with a solid dose of funk, such as Khruangbin ’s global sonic collage.

There are many bands that play heavily with funk, creating lush grooves designed to get you moving. Say She She

Aptly self-described as "discodelic soul," Brooklyn-based seven-piece Say She She make dreamy, operatic funk, led by singer-songwriters Nya Gazelle Brown, Piya Malik and Sabrina Mileo Cunningham. Their '70s girl group-inspired vocal harmonies echo, sooth and enchant as they cover poignant topics with feminist flair.

While they’ve been active in the New York scene for a few years, they’ve gained wider acclaim for the irresistible music they began releasing this year, including their debut album, Prism . Their 2022 debut single "Forget Me Not" is an ode to ground-breaking New York art collective Guerilla Girls, and " Norma " is their protest anthem in response to the news that Roe vs. Wade could be (and was) overturned. The band name is a nod to funk legend Nile Rodgers , from the "Le freak, c'est chi" exclamation in Chic's legendary tune "Le Freak."

Moniquea 's unique voice oozes confidence, yet invites you in to dance with her to the super funky boogie rhythms. The Pasadena, California artist was raised on funk music; her mom was in a cover band that would play classics like Aretha Franklin’ s "Get It Right" and Gladys Knight ’s "Love Overboard." Moniquea released her first boogie funk track at 20 and, in 2011, met local producer XL Middelton — a bonafide purveyor of funk. She's been a star artist on his MoFunk Records ever since, and they've collabed on countless tracks, channeling West Coast energy with a heavy dose of G-funk, sunny lyrics and upbeat, roller disco-ready rhythms.

Her latest release is an upbeat nod to classic West Coast funk, produced by Middleton, and follows her February 2022 groovy, collab-filled album, On Repeat .

Shiro Schwarz

Shiro Schwarz is a Mexico City-based duo, consisting of Pammela Rojas and Rafael Marfil, who helped establish a modern funk scene in the richly creative Mexican metropolis. On "Electrify" — originally released in 2016 on Fat Beats Records and reissued in 2021 by MoFunk — Shiro Schwarz's vocals playfully contrast each other, floating over an insistent, upbeat bassline and an '80s throwback electro-funk rhythm with synth flourishes.

Their music manages to be both nostalgic and futuristic — and impossible to sit still to. 2021 single "Be Kind" is sweet, mellow and groovy, perfect chic lounge funk. Shiro Schwarz’s latest track, the joyfully nostalgic "Hey DJ," is a collab with funkstress Saucy Lady and U-Key.

L'Impératrice

L'Impératrice (the empress in French) are a six-piece Parisian group serving an infectiously joyful blend of French pop, nu-disco, funk and psychedelia. Flore Benguigui's vocals are light and dreamy, yet commanding of your attention, while lyrics have a feminist touch.

During their energetic live sets, L'Impératrice members Charles de Boisseguin and Hagni Gwon (keys), David Gaugué (bass), Achille Trocellier (guitar), and Tom Daveau (drums) deliver extended instrumental jam sessions to expand and connect their music. Gaugué emphasizes the thick funky bass, and Benguigui jumps around the stage while sounding like an angel. L’Impératrice’s latest album, 2021’s Tako Tsubo , is a sunny, playful French disco journey.

Franc Moody

Franc Moody 's bio fittingly describes their music as "a soul funk and cosmic disco sound." The London outfit was birthed by friends Ned Franc and Jon Moody in the early 2010s, when they were living together and throwing parties in North London's warehouse scene. In 2017, the group grew to six members, including singer and multi-instrumentalist Amber-Simone.

Their music feels at home with other electro-pop bands like fellow Londoners Jungle and Aussie act Parcels. While much of it is upbeat and euphoric, Franc Moody also dips into the more chilled, dreamy realm, such as the vibey, sultry title track from their recently released Into the Ether .

With a highly successful recording and touring career that spans over five decades,  Al Green ’s musical roots originate in Memphis, but he has made an undeniable and lasting impact on music and musicians around the world from R&B, Soul, and Pop to Blues and Gospel. Throughout his career, he has earned a long list of hit albums and singles including his breakthrough release Al Green Gets Next To You in 1971 featuring “Tired of Being Alone,” which was Top Ten on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and 1972’s Let’s Stay Together which reached No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart and No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with the title track hitting No. 1 on both the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts concurrently.

Hailed by the New York Times as “one of the great soul interpreters of her generation”,  Bettye LaVette  is a vocalist who can take any type of song and make it completely her own. Bettye is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 1960s and is still creating vital recordings today. To quote the late, great George Jones: “Bettye is truly a ‘singer’s singer’.”

VIP parking is located on the south side of the arena across from the main entrance. VIP parking is an additional fee. Guests wishing to be dropped off or picked up before or after an event should use the South parking entrance. A separate two-lane drive with a turn-around lane allows guests to be easily picked up or dropped off. This area also provides temporary parking for purchases at the ticket office.

Al Green has 3 concerts in 2023. How much are tickets?

For the first time since his 2019 ‘U.S. Spring Tour,’ Al Green is going on tour.

It’s a short one though .

As of now, the legendary R&B singer has just three shows lined up this year — two in July and one in September.

First up, the 77-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is slated to perform at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre with the Colorado Symphony on Wednesday, July 12.

After that, he’ll headline at the Cincinnati Music Festival on July 21-22 along with megastars like Snoop Dogg , Jill Scott , Babyface , Jodeci , P-Funk Connection and more.

Finally, Green will close his brief run of gigs at Highland, CA’s Yaamava Resort and Casino on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Starting Thursday, July 20 , the extravaganza kicks off at the Andrew J. Brady ICON Music Center and will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop with stars Doug E. Fresh , Big Daddy Kane , Slick Rick and Rakim .

Los Angeles, CA (August 21, 2023) – Today, eleven-time GRAMMY® Award-winning soul icon and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame® inductee Al Green returns with his first new single in five years. “ Perfect Day ” is out digitally now on Fat Possum Records. A simmering and soulful cover of Lou Reed’s 1972 classic “Perfect Day”—originally produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. Now, it heralds the dawn of Green’s next chapter.

About “Perfect Day,” Al Green commented, “I loved Lou’s original ‘Perfect Day’. The song immediately puts you in a good mood. We wanted to preserve that spirit, while adding our own sauce and style.”

During February 2023, Al Green recorded “Perfect Day” at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, TN. The track is produced by Matthew Johnson and Bruce Watson. Green notably reunited with members of the classic Hi Rhythm Section who powered up some of his most seminal hits from the seventies. The track finds him back with Reverend Charles Hodges [organ], Leroy Hodges [bass], and Archie “Hubbie” Turner [piano] for the first time since 2005, while Steve Potts [drums] and Will Sexton [guitar] also return. Adding new blood to the mix, the single also features U.K. alternative R&B artist RAYE on background vocals. Over a backdrop of lush cinematic strings, swooning organ, and eloquent guitar, Green’s instantly recognizable voice simply soars, ringing out on the final crescendo as he promises, “You’re gonna reap just what you sow,” in a call-and-response with RAYE.

For this fall, Al Green adds two special Midwest shows over Thanksgiving weekend, including Detroit’s Fox Theatre on November 24 with special guest Angela Winbush and at St. Charles’ The Family Arena in St. Charles, MO on November 25 with special guest Bettye Lavette as support. Al Green returns with cover of Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’

He teams up with RAYE for his first single in five years

Reverend Al Green has made his return by sharing a cover of Lou Reed ’s ‘Perfect Day’. Check it out below.

The track is the first new music that the American singer, songwriter, pastor and record producer has recorded in five years. It follows on from his cover of Freddy Fender’s ‘Before the Next Teardrop Falls’ which he worked on in 2018 and shared two years later.

For the song, the 77-year-old musician puts his own signature spin on the Lou Reed classic, taken from his iconic 1972 album ‘Transformer’.

It also sees him reunited with members of the Hi Rhythm Section, and was recorded back in February at the Sam Philips Recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee.

“I loved Lou’s original ‘Perfect Day,’” Green said in a statement (via Consequence ). “The song immediately puts you in a good mood. We wanted to preserve that spirit, while adding our own sauce and style.”

What’s more, the cover of ‘Perfect Day’ also sees him collaborate with alternative R&B singer, RAYE . The British artist contributes warm, soulful backing vocals throughout the track, as he takes the main lead. Check out the cover and original track below.

In addition to releasing the new cover, Green has also announced details of new live performances, set to take place later this year.

The two new shows, taking place in November, will follow his previously scheduled date at the Yaamava Theater in Highland, California on September 30. The first of the two new gigs will be held at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan on November 24, while the second show will take place in The Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri the following day.

Prior to his cover of ‘Before the Next Teardrop Falls’, Green last released new music in 2008, in the form of his last album, ‘Lay It Down’.

Since releasing the record – which was produced by Questlove – Green has also shared a handful of compilation albums, including a ‘Greatest Hits’ record in 2009.

Legendary soul singer Al Green brings the “Still In Love With You Tour” presented by MIX 92.3 to the Fox Theatre for a rare concert appearance on Friday, November 24 at 8 p.m.

With a highly successful recording and touring career that spans over five decades, Al Green’s musical roots originate in Memphis, but he has made an undeniable and lasting impact on music and musicians around the world from R&B, Soul, and Pop to Blues and Gospel. Throughout his career, he has earned a long list of hit albums and singles including his breakthrough release Al Green Gets Next To You in 1971 featuring “Tired of Being Alone,” which was Top Ten on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and 1972’s Let’s Stay Together which reached No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart and No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with the title track hitting No. 1 on both the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts concurrently.

The hits kept coming, Green continued his chart success with back to back hits including 1972’s platinum selling album I’m Still In Love With You, 1973’s Call Me, featuring the hit single “You Ought To Be With Me,” 1973’s Livin’ For You, 1974’s gold selling Al Green Explores Your Mind and 1975’s Al Green Is Love, all hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart plus the Top 20 R&B hit albums Full of Fire and Have A Good Time, both released in 1976. In 1975, Al Green released his platinum selling hits collection Al Green’s Greatest Hits which reached top 20 on Billboard’s Top 200 and No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and packed with hits including “Let’s Stay Together,” “Call Me (Come Back Home),” “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” and “Tired of Being Alone.”

In the 80s, the Reverend Al Green returned to the music he was raised on, and for the next decade, he focused on Gospel music. His first Gospel album, The Lord Will Make A Way, was the album that resulted in the first Grammy® of his career.  His fans followed his new path, and he continued his chart success with 1983’s I’ll Rise Again, which hit No. 4 on the Top Gospel Albums chart, and two Top 10s in the Top Gospel Album chart with 1984’s Trust In God and 1987’s Soul Survivor, which reached No. 1.  

His return to pop music with I Can’t Stop (2003) and 2008’s Lay It Down, put Green back on the pop charts with a No. 9 and No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Along with Al Green’s commercial success, he continues to receive praise and accolades most recently being celebrated in Washington D.C. at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2014. He received “Lifetime Achievement Award” at both the 2002 Grammy® Awards and the 2008 BET Awards and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee in 1995. He has won Grammy® Awards for the songs: “The Lord Will Make A Way” (1981); “Higher Plane;” (1982)  “Precious Lord” (1982); “Ocean Blue (I'll Rise Again)" (1983); “Going Away” (1986); “Everything's Gonna Be Alright” (1987);  “As Long As We’re Together” (1989); “Stay With Me (By The Sea) (2008); and "You’ve Got The Love I Need” (2008). He has also received Grammy® Awards for his duets with Shirley Caesar for “Sailin' On The Sea Of Your Love” (1984), “Wanna Be Happy?” (2015) with Kirk Franklin and “Funny How Time Slips Away” (1994) with Lyle Lovett.

Today, Reverend Green dedicates his time to his ministry in his hometown of Memphis, TN.  In 2018, he recorded and released “Before The Next Teardrop Falls,” his first single in almost 10 years.

Considered one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, with Pitchfork proclaiming Al Green as “The Greatest Living Soul Singer,” Al Green is a national treasure and once again hits the road to spread his message of love.

Al Green has released his first new single in five years.

Arriving via Fat Possum Records, Perfect Day sees the soul legend putting his vocal prowess on Lou Reed's 1972 classic of the same name. Green commented:

"I loved Lou’s original Perfect Day. The song immediately puts you in a good mood. We wanted to preserve that spirit, while adding our own sauce and style."

Guided by Green's emotive, velvety voice, and driven by members of the Hi Rhythm Section band, musicians who contributed to some of his biggest hits from the '70s, it was recorded back in February at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, Tennessee. UK singer Raye also lends her talents to backing vocals over a sweeping string arrangement.

Produced by Matthew Johnson and Bruce Watson, it follows Green's 2018 version of Freddy Fender's Before The Next Teardrop Falls. Press play below.

Green will play US shows in September and November, including a date in Highland, California before Midwest shows in Detroit, Michigan and Saint Charles, Missouri over Thanksgiving weekend, with Bettye Lavette supporting. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday (August 25).

Soul music legend and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Al Green has shared a cover of “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed , his first new single in five years.

Recorded at Memphis’ Sam Phillips Recording studio, the song features The Hi Rhythm Section that served as the house band for some of Green’s most iconic records as well as background vocals from U.K. alt-R&B artist RAYE . The track arrives half a decade after Green’s cover of Freddy Fender ‘s “Before the Next Teardrop Falls”, which was itself his first new song since a decade prior .

Al Green Comeback Tour 2024

Al Green is hitting some venues in the southern States in April and May to perform some of his secular Comebacks – the first time he has done such performances in seven years. Green has spent the majority of his past 40 years shepherding the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis, Tenn., although in 2003 he returned briefly to his sexy roots with the album I Can’t Stop and last year recorded “Before The Next Teardrop Falls,” his first single in a decade.

The iconic American singer, songwriter and record producer, best known for recording a series of soul hit singles in the early 1970s, last year released his single ‘Before The Next Teardrop Falls’. That track became his first single in almost 10 years after spending the majority of his time focused on his ministry in Memphis.

The brief excursion is anchored by his April 28 appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
