Mark Warther Brings Lifelong Experiences to Group-Tour Planning

Mark Warther, president of Warther Tours and Amazing Travel Treasures, is no stranger to group tours. For 30 years, as general manager of his family’s museum, Ernest Warther Museum & Gardens in Dover, Ohio, Warther was responsible for marketing to and building relationships with motorcoach companies. Fast forward to 2008, when Warther branched out of the family business to create his own Ohio-based tour company.

Warther Tours

Q. What inspired you to get started in the tour business?

A. I actually took a tour of Colorado through a large tour company and thought they were “missing the boat” when it came to details, quality hotels, and food. I rented a car and toured Colorado for a month and designed our own tour based on historic and boutique hotels, fantastic food, and unique experiences, including a dinner on a canyon rim with brisket cooked for 20 hours. I was hooked! I figured if that recipe for building tours works in Colorado, it would work everywhere. Now we handle five Colorado tours and other types of tour options every year with groups from all over the country.

Q. Why does the group-tour industry appeal to you?

A. I am amazed the most with the lifelong friends that one makes in this industry. Once we have spent some time with people, showing them places they have never been, in a unique and quality way, they usually come back and want to experience another place with us, and that creates friendships.

Q. Where do you find inspiration for your tours?

A. Listening to our guests. When clients ask to visit a destination I have never been before, I start researching. Sometimes it may take a couple of years and several visits to a new area to learn the right way to design the tour. Once we are satisfied with the tour we have created, it becomes part of our library of tours.

Q. What industry trends are you noticing?

A. Since COVID-19, we are seeing the desire for North American tours increase, and I think, with time, Europe will see a resurgence, too. The desire for detailed larger tours is still there. Another trend impacting the market is the increasing cost of hiring motorcoaches for one- and two-day tours. To meet these trends, we are building more tours of distinction that appeal to clients who want to stay in boutique hotels and experience activities they cannot book on their own.

Q. What’s next for Warther Tours?

A. In an effort to come out of COVID positioned to be a new leader in the tour industry, I bought a tour design company, which I renamed Amazing Travel Treasures. This company sells tour packages to other companies and group leaders rather than retail consumers like Warther Tours. We are fortunate to have hired key people in the industry such as Dawn Dornes, our general manager, who has 25 years of experience.

We also finalized two new tours this year. One is our Swiss Rail and Italian Lakes Tour, which travels throughout Switzerland on first-class rails, with several two-night stays. We include unique experiences such as wine and pasta making in a grotto in northern Italy. Our other new tour destination is the Pacific Northwest. This tour includes two days on the San Juan Cruises enjoying whale and wildlife searching and staying two nights in Friday Harbor.

Q. How do you attract new clients to your business?

A. We believe in advertising but find that word of mouth is still our best way of finding new clients. Our quality experiences speak for themselves.

Q. Tell me about your favorite tour you have planned or gone on. What made it special?

A. I really love our Ireland tour. We put together a 12-day tour, which features once-in-a-lifetime lodging like Lough Eske Castle and Ballynahinch Castle along with 23 meals. Our guide, Tony McGoey, is an old Irishman who really brings that tour alive!

Q. What travel destination is on your bucket list?

A. Future places I have not designed yet that are on my bucket list would be Norway/Sweden and the Arctic Circle.

Dinner with the Carver

Dinner tours at David Warther Carvings are a special event where David and his wife Maryruth are hosts for your group’s special evening. The evening starts with David and Maryruth greeting your group and starting on a guided tour of the carving exhibit with Carver Dave as your guide.

Halfway through the tour your group enters additional museum exhibit rooms that have been set up for an elegant candlelit dinner with linens, soft music and a delicious meal prepared by a well known area chef who is a fully-licensed caterer. The meal includes a plated entre, salad, dessert, and beverages.

After the dinner David opens with question-and-answer time. He tells a few interesting stories and then continues with the tour. From his workshop, he shows carving tools and techniques. The evening concludes with time for shopping in the gift shop where Warther knives and other locally made items are for sale.

Our dinner tours are a special evening and they have been well received by tour groups wanting to experience the area and the people of our area in a genuine non-touristy way. The dinner is relaxing and capstones a great day in Ohio's Amish community. From when your group arrives for the dinner tour until they leave you should count on 3 hours of time or slightly more. We are located between Sugarcreek and Walnut Creek, Ohio, so we are central to the motel corridor from Dover to Berlin. Most area motels are within 15 minutes of our location.

This is an evening of enjoyment with David & Maryruth as your hosts with exceptional food and an entertaining aura. There is an ambiance to this evening that will make it a memorable experience for everyone in your group.

Warther Tours Website & Online Booking

warther tours

Local Travel Company Gets a Major Upgrade

Launched in early 2020, the Warther Tours website is a huge improvement over the previous site, which was mostly informational. Mark Warther, owner of Warther Tours, was seeking a website where customers could book their trips completely online with accurate prices and specials. Working closely with Mark in the Winter of 2019, Graydian delivered on these goals, along with an editing interface that is updated almost entirely by company employees, not a web designer.

“I feel you knocked it out of the park with our site design and performance and service. I feel we have a site that’s better than the big boys in our industry and feel it’s certainly marketable nationally. I have been and will be recommending Graydian to all I know in business, Keep up the good work!" - Mark Warther

Technologies Used:

WordPress For overall content management of the entire website.

Gravity Forms For intake of customer information when placing an order, and email notifications.

Stripe Works in conjunction with Gravity Forms to process credit card orders.

Advanced Custom Fields Plugin for WordPress, allowing for easily editable tour screens by staff members.

Most of the home page is put together by company employees, not a web designer. Representatives from Warther Tours create their tour entries, which can have multiple trip dates, and include them in various featured sections on the home page.

Home Page Features:

  • Full screen hero image slider
  • Combined tour selections by date
  • Automatic inclusion of featured images
  • Categories for local tours
  • Editable areas for “about" sections below
  • All updated by staff employees

warther tours

The tour pages are the bread and butter of the Warther Tours site. This is where a potential customer makes their decision to book. Considering this, we learned very quickly to spend most of our time on this template, and the related functions such as specials, tour details, the booking form itself, and accurate pricing.

Tour Page Features:

  • Full width featured image
  • Automatic date formatting
  • Tour highlights and inclusions right up front
  • Various content sections that can be shown or hidden
  • Itinerary timeline, maps, videos, photos can all be included
  • Booking form with automatic inclusion of pricing and discounts

Tour Edit Screen

For employees, the most frequently used portion of the Warther Tours site is the tour editing screen. We spent a lot of time crafting this screen to make it as easy as possible for staff members to use. This is all made possible by the Advanced Custom Fields plugin for WordPress, and with careful attention to detail. Each major section is broken up into tabs, and each tab includes important information about the tour that can shown or hidden, depending on how much content is available for that particular tour. All tour information is entered here, including specials, pricing and discounts. The pricing is then passed into the booking form through the use of the Gravity Forms plugin, and some custom programming.

Tour Edit Screen Features:

  • Major sections broken up into tabs, for easy organization
  • Most sections can be shown or hidden per tour
  • Maps, videos, photo gallery, and more can be included
  • All date displays are automatic
  • Pricing and discounts are entered once and passed to the booking form

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Novodevichy Convent, Moscow

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
