Getting to Adelaide

Adelaide is well serviced by budget and full-service carriers as well as the iconic rail service, The Overland.

Virgin Australia , Qantas, Jetstar and Rex Airlines all fly to Adelaide from various cities around Australia. Of the capitals, Melbourne offers some of the cheapest fares, starting from $69 on Jetstar or $99 on Rex Airlines each way. Launceston flights aren't far behind, starting at $99 each way on Virgin Australia .

Flights from Melbourne to Adelaide take around 90 minutes.

Flights from Launceston to Adelaide take around 2 hours.

The Overland offers a luxurious rail experience form Melbourne to Adelaide and runs a few times per week. The journey takes approximately a day and prices start from $95.

Getting around Adelaide

The Adelaide Metro network is made up of public buses, trams and trains and runs throughout Adelaide. To use it, you will need a metroCARD, which can be purchased from Adelaide Airport and loaded as you go. Credit cards can also be used to tap-and-go but only on trams and O-Bahn busway buses.

If you're only in Adelaide for the weekend, the metroCARD Visitor Pass can give you the best value. It offers three days of unlimited travel for a fixed amount.

The tram routes around the CBD are free, however you will need a ticket if you're travelling outside of this zone.

Do I need a car in Adelaide?

Hiring a car can be a convenient way to get around, particularly if you're planning to visit some of Adelaide's surrounding regions, such as Hahndorf and the Adelaide Hills and don't want to join a tour.

Is 3 days enough in Adelaide?

Three days is ample time to explore Adelaide's city centre and venture out to one of its neighbouring regions or attractions for a day trip. We suggest starting the day at the Adelaide Central Markets for breakfast before exploring the city centre, including its murals, botanic garden and potentially a museum before treating yourself to a twilight climb of Adelaide Oval.

On day two take an early morning cruise of Port Adelaide before visiting Adelaide Zoo and its pandas and spending the evening catching the sunset over Glenelg Beach.

On day three, venture out and discover one of the many wine regions that surround the city. Or, if you'd prefer to keep moving, cycle or hike Mount Lofty then meet the animals at Cleland Wildlife Park.

What is Adelaide best known for?

While known as the City of Churches, Adelaide has grown to become a popular destination for festivals and outdoor adventures. In March (known as Mad March) the city welcomes the Adelaide Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide music festival, Adelaide Writers' Week and Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

Beyond Adelaide you can climb rock faces in Morialta Conservation Park, cycle Mount Lofty and surf Port Noarlunga.

By Marc Llewellyn

Adelaide Hills

Penfolds Magill Estate Kitchen, Adelaide Hills, South Australia © Adam Bruzzone, South Australian Tourism Commission

Where: A 30-minute drive east of Adelaide city centre.

The Adelaide Hills is a beautiful area of cool-climate countryside marked by gently rolling hills, historic villages, country roads and neat rows of grapevines. Start the day with breakfast at  The Summit Café  on top of Mount Lofty, which has astonishing views of Adelaide. From here, wind your way through the  Adelaide Hills  to  Cleland Wildlife Park , where you can adore the resident koalas and wander among kangaroos, wombats, and Tasmanian devils. Next, head to the heritage village of  Hahndorf , established by German settlers in 1839, and explore galleries, gift shops, and a delicatessen selling German-style produce. About 50 wineries offer wine tasting in the area, including  Penfolds Magill Estate , home of Australia’s most prized wine, the famous Penfolds Grange. At  The Lane Vineyard  you can linger over lunch with views of the vines. For a taste of something different, visit Ambleside Distillery and savour gin cocktails on the timber deck overlooking the Adelaide Hills. Finish the day with a stroll through the Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens , equally as spectacular in spring as in winter.

Fleurieu Peninsula and McLaren Vale

d'Arenberg Cube, McLaren Vale, South Australia © d'Arenberg Cube

Did you know?

Each level of the Cube has a different sensory experience and the ground floor houses an Alternate Realities Museum.

Where:  40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Adelaide.

Named after a French explorer and ocean scientist who died in 1810, the  Fleurieu Peninsula  is known for its surf beaches, pleasant harbour towns, and a clutch of wineries in McLaren Vale.  Popular activities include fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving and beach walking. The historic river port town of Goolwa is where Australia's longest river, the Murray, meets the sea. Explore the sand dunes and lagoons that make up Coorong National Park on a tour with  Cruise the Coorong  or  Spirit of the Coorong .  Victor Harbor , about a 20-minute drive from Goolwa, has a fabulous beach and nearby islands with seals and penguins . Picturesque McLaren Vale is home to stand-out wineries including the wildly unique d'Arenberg Cube. Do a tasting at the winery and stay on for a lazy lunch at d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant.

Clare Valley

Clare Valley Riesling Trail, South Australia © South Australia Tourism Commission

A 32-kilometre (20-mile) walking and cycling track, the  Riesling Trail , connects Clare Valley towns, restaurants and wineries via a converted railway line.

Where: About 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of Adelaide.

One of Australia’s oldest wine regions, the  Clare Valley  is a cluster of villages and wineries nestled in a valley of farmland and vines. Taste wines at more than 30 cellar doors, many of them still housed in old stone cottages and farm sheds. The oldest winery around here is  Sevenhill Cellars , founded by Jesuit priests in 1851. After tasting wines at the cellar door you can explore the Winery Museum and the original underground wine storage cellar. Explore grand homesteads from the 1800s, including  Martindale Hall  and  Bungaree Station . Have lunch in the beer garden at the  Sevenhill Hotel , just south of the town of Clare. Later, take a self-guided tour of the historic former copper mining town of  Burra , in the Bald Hills Range, east of the valley. With a key from the visitor centre you can delve into nine locked sites, including a gaol, an underground brewery and the main mining area, the Monster Mine.

Blend Bar, blending experience at Jacob's Creek, Barossa Valley, SA © John Montesi

Blending experience at Jacob's Creek, Barossa Valley, South Australia © John Montesi

Where: Just over an hour north-east of the city.

Arguably Australia’s most famous wine region, the  Barossa  (or the Barossa Valley, as it’s also known) is a patchwork of vineyards and farmland interspersed with pretty historic villages and towns. Some places, such as Krondorf, have a Germanic feel to them thanks to early settlers from Silesia and Prussia. Look out for Lutheran church spires. Artisan food producers are common around here, and the food is almost as famous as the wine. There are more than 150 wineries in the Barossa and about 80 cellar doors. Don't miss  Seppeltsfield Wines  and the  Jacob's Creek Visitor Centre . Seppeltsfield Wines offers plenty of wine experiences, including the chance to taste tawny fortified wine made the year you were born, straight from the barrel. At Jacob's Creek , try your hand at winemaking in a dynamic blend-your-own experience . Produce your perfect wine based on your preferences, then bring the bottle home to enjoy.

In Mannum, Have a drink or lunch on the balcony of the  Pretoria Hotel  pub and enjoy uninterrupted river views. The  PS Murray Princess , the largest inland paddle-steamer in the Southern Hemisphere, offers multi-day cruises from Mannum. For a historical slice of life on the river, drop into the  Mannum Dock Museum  and clamber around the PS Marion, a restored steamer built in 1897. 48 Hours in Adelaide – A 2 day Itinerary

Our 2 Day Itinerary for Adelaide is a comprehensive guide that will help you choose when best to visit the area, as well show you the must see attractions! Firstly, lets learn a little more about the city itself.

Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and is separated into two main parts; Adelaide and North Adelaide. These areas are divided by the River Torrens.

Adelaide showcases a superb mix of landscapes. These include glorious sandy beaches, luscious woodlands, imposing mountainous areas, and of course, the city centre which is the beating heart of this vibrant Australian city.

Adelaide is popular with tourists who want to embrace all things Australian and enjoy the sights and sounds of a fun and modern city, but on a slightly smaller scale than you would perhaps experience at the larger hubs like Sydney or Melbourne.

Adelaide is a particularly great destination for lovers of the outdoors, as it is crammed with opportunities for adventure. You have an array of watersport options over on the coastal side of the city, while back on dry land there are vast national parks through which to hike or bike.

In Adelaide, you can expect to experience four distinct seasons courtesy of the predominantly Mediterranean climate. This manifests as relatively mild winters and hot, dry summers.

Temperatures can reach 30oC in the height of summer. The popular opinion is that the best times to visit Adelaide as a tourist would be just out of high season, during late Spring or early Autumn.

This way you still get to enjoy really pleasant weather but without the high prices and huge crowds. If you only have two days in Adelaide it is important that you base yourself in the right area so that you can reach everything easily and conveniently.

By far the most popular spot for tourists to stay in Adelaide is the Central Business District, otherwise know as the CBD.

A vibrant hub of activity day and night, the CBD is made up of imposing skyscrapers that tower over the city, modern architectural office buildings, and designer shops and restaurants.

Many of the most famous attractions are found in the CBD making it the most convenient location for tourists visiting the city.

Glenelg is almost the polar opposite of the CBD in terms of atmosphere and the views it offers. Located just west of the centre of the city Glenelg boasts a stunning coastal position and you can enjoy a sea view from many of the hotels and Air Bnb’s here.

This is a calmer, more laid-back area of Adelaide, but the hustle and bustle of the heart of the city is only a few minutes away so you are never too far from the action.

The area of North Adelaide is mainly residential suburbs and the ideal spot for tourists to base themselves if they wish to immerse themselves in the day-to-day lives of the locals. There are plenty of clean, green areas and many charming boutique shops and restaurants scattered about too.

Read on as we show you our recommendations for the best way to spend two days in Adelaide. We show you how to get the best from the city, to eat at the best restaurants and to ensure that you dont leave without seeing all the main sights and attractions.

Day 1 in Adelaide

Breakfast at my kingdom for a horse .

We have always been told that the best way to start the day, (or in this case 48 hours in Adelaide!)  is with a good hearty breakfast. My Kingdom for a Horse is an uber-popular, trendy breakfast spot in the heart of the city.

It opens its doors bright and early in the morning to serve your favorite breakfast dishes from around the globe. Plus there is copious amounts of  award-winning coffee!

When it comes to the food menu you may decide to go Spanish with the Huevos Rancheros, or maybe you’ll choose something Tunisian and go for the African delicacy of Shakshouka.

One thing for sure is that at the end of your meal, you will feel full, satisfied, and ready for a day of exploring and getting involved with all the best things to do in Adelaide!

Browse around Adelaide Central Market

No trip to Adelaide would be complete without a visit to Adelaide Central Market . The market is impressive in size, with over 70 traders all operating together under one roof.

In fact, it is one of the biggest covered markets in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere. The market traders here predominantly sell fresh food produce.

It is a vibrant colourful display of baked goods, fruit and veg, seafood, sweet treats, and much more.

You can enjoy a leisurely stroll around, taking in the wonderful chaos, noise, and smells of the market. Perhaps you will pick up some scrumptious offerings too!

Visit Adelaide Botanic Garden

It is hard to believe that Adelaide Botanic Garden is in the middle of a city. Fifty hectares of stunning, beautifully manicured gardens, woodland, breathtaking sculptures, and elegant architecture await you.

There’s a splendid variety of themed gardens to explore, each designed to represent a different biosphere or specific plant habitat!

It is the perfect place to connect with nature and you can take some time to enjoy being educated on a diverse and spectacular array of flowers, plants, and herbs. Be sure to snap some shots of the unique buildings on display too.

The Palm House is a particularly fascinating piece of architecture. It is a glasshouse from the Victorian era that was imported from Germany in the late 19th century and is spectacularly Insta-worthy!

Lunch at Golden Boy

Golden Boy is a delightful authentic Asian restaurant that is a fantastic spot, not far from the Botanic Garden, where you can enjoy a well-earned lunch, and perhaps a cheeky glass of Australian vino.

Well known for its asian inspired flavors, friendly service, and excellent attention to detail, tables at the Golden Boy get booked quickly so be sure to book in advance!

Art Gallery of South Australia

An afternoon of culture is in store for you as you spend an enjoyable few hours browsing the art, sculptures, and projects on display at the Art Gallery of South Australia . In addition to the permanent displays, there are also regular visitor exhibitions to observe.

There is a brilliant gift shop at the gallery too, with inspired souvenir ideas so you are sure to find the perfect gift for even the most difficult-to-please friend back home!

Superhero-themed dinner at Chuck Wagon 175

A fun superhero-themed meal at the Chuck Wagon 175 , located in the north of the city, is a great way to end your action-packed first day in Adelaide!

They serve generous portions of all your American favorites including huge burgers, fries, shakes, and ribs.

As you take your seat, you will find yourself surrounded by all sorts of superhero memorabilia and a super lively atmosphere.

Day 2 in Adelaide

Brunch at bloom.

One of the most sought-after brunch spots in Adelaide is a trendy eatery called Bloom . After such a packed day of activities on your first day in Adelaide, a leisurely start to day two is probably on the cards so be sure to make sure you don’t book a table too early!

The brunch menu at Bloom is bursting with delicious delight. In fact the hardest thing will be deciding what to choose to eat!

The dishes on this extravagant brunch menu are delightfully indulgent and just the ticket to kick off day two of your Adelaide Itinerary.

The ambience here is bright and modern and the thing that really hsines through at Bloom is exceptional attention to detail throughout.

Cleland Wildlife Park

Cleland Wildlife Park , located in the stunning Adelaide Hills, is unique in many ways from other similar attractions. The animals live in what is as close to their natural habitat as possible.

They are completely adapted to park life meaning that they are super tame and friendly and guests are allowed the privilege of stroking and feeding them snacks.

You may have the chance to get up close and personal with kangaroos, wombats, and wallabies for that perfect photo op.

Regular keeper talks give the opportunity to learn more about each animal and ask questions too.

Shopping on King William Street

A great way to spend the latter part of your short break or weekend in Adelaide is some serious retail therapy on King William Street and Rundle Mall.

This iconic street, named after King William IV, is packed full of popular shops, stores, and cafes.

You can shop for gifts, souvenirs, and authentic keepsakes from the area while taking in some stunning architecture along the way including St Peter’s Cathedral which is a prominent landmark along this picturesque boulevard.

Dinner on the roof at 2KW

A really special way to spend the last part of your two-day itinerary in Adelaide is with dinner at 2KW , which is located on the rooftop of one of the buildings on King William Street.

This restaurant offers sensational views over the city and a fabulous fine dining menu. The head chef here showcases only the best, locally sourced ingredients in his theatrical food prep processes that include carving at the table and show-cooking.

The extensive wine list, made up of bottles from all the very best local wine regions , perfectly complements the cuisine. The atmosphere at 2KW is elegant and upmarket yet relaxed and comfortable.

Watch the sunset

Head on over to Glenelg as dusk approaches to witness the Adelaide skies put on the most theatrical of displays.

Sunsets in Southern Australia can usually be counted upon to be quite spectacular so either grab a private spot on the sand to watch the glorious fire coloured show.

Or perhaps you would prefer to take a seat in one of the beach side cocktail bars. Either way, watching the sun set in Adelaide is truly the perfect way to end your trip.

Barossa Valley

One of the best short trips from Adelaide is heading north out of the city, into the Barossa Valley. The Barossa, as it’s commonly referred to, is one of Australia’s best-known wine regions, home to world-famous wines and mesmerising scenery. Just a short drive from Adelaide (it’s only an hour from the city to the Valley), the Barossa Valley is centred around the towns of Lyndoch, Tanunda, and Nuriootpa. With outstanding produce to go with some of Australia’s best wines, it’s hard to beat the Barossa for SA short holidays.

Spend your days tasting the incredible wines on offer, particularly Shiraz which has been cultivated in the area for over 170 years! Some of the standout wineries include famous names like Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Peter Lehmann, Yalumba, Jacob’s Creek, Seppeltsfield, and many others. One great idea for your Barossa Valley road trip from Adelaide is to take a full-day winery tour from one of the many local operators. In addition to visiting the big names, they’ll take you to up-and-coming wineries, and some of the hidden gems too.

Food and Sculpture

Barossa Produce - SA Short Stays - South Australia Road Trips

While in the Nuriootpa area, don’t forget to check out the Maggie Beer Farm Shop. Run by Maggie Beer, a beloved Australian TV chef, her range of jams, chutneys, sauces, and of course signature verjuice is delightful and a must-do for any cook. Not far away you’ll find the Barossa Sculpture Park, with an interesting collection of outdoor sculptures. It sits on a hilltop with an excellent view of the Barossa’s rolling vineyards, and is a great spot for a romantic picnic.

Clare Valley

Just north of the Barossa Valley is another of the great South Australian road trips destinations, the Clare Valley. Smaller than the Barossa, but no less interesting, the Clare Valley is renowned for excellent wine and more wonderful scenery. It’s just under two hours drive from central Adelaide, and is definitely one of the best weekend getaways from Adelaide.

Wineries and the Riesling Trail

Wineries - Short Trips From Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

The Clare Valley is home to the best riesling wines in Australia, with highly regarded producers like Taylors, Kilikanoon, Sevenhill Cellars, Annie’s Lane, and Jim Barry Wines all hailing from the area. With a whole weekend to explore, one tantalising idea is to follow the Riesling Trail, a 35 kilometre pedestrian and cycling track that runs the entire length of the valley. It stops at most of the major wineries, and is largely separate from roadways – a huge plus for the safety conscious. Bike hires are available in both Auburn and Clare, while many Airbnbs and hotels will have bikes to use as well. If you’re not in the mood for cycling, guided tours are also a great option, for seeing a variety of wineries and a touch of inside knowledge.

Staying Longer on the Fleurieu Peninsula?

Spring gully conservation park.

It’s hard to beat a great bush sunset, and Clare Valley is home to a spectacular one, at Blue Gum lookout in Spring Gully Conservation Park near Sevenhill. Bring a picnic blanket, a bottle of riesling, and some local delicacies to watch the sun sink slowly into the valley hills. It’s a beautiful sight – and if you’re lucky, a curious kangaroo or echidna might just decide to join your picnic!

Fleurieu Peninsula

One of the most popular spots for romantic getaways South Australia is the Fleurieu (pronounced FLOO-ree-ooh) Peninsula, an hour’s drive south of Adelaide. Showcasing top-notch wines, pristine coastline, rugged bushland and interesting towns, Fleurieu is a beautiful place and home to some of the best road trips from Adelaide.

McLaren Vale

If you’ve got multiple nights available, be sure to spend at least a full day exploring the magnificent wineries of McLaren Vale, another of the world-class wine regions in South Australia. Take a locally-run day tour, visiting the highlight wineries like d’Arenberg, Hugh Hamilton, Hardy’s, Mitolo, and Coriole, but also dropping in at lesser-known gems. While you’re at d’Arenberg, be sure to check out their incredible glass Rubik’s Cube building – three storeys high, and home to several restaurants and tasting rooms!

Carrickalinga Beach - Weekend Getaways from Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

After a long day of wine tasting, spend the next day of your weekend getaway from Adelaide splashing in the superb waters of the Peninsula. Carrickalinga Beach is a particular highlight, with glistening white sand and rolling breakers, while there’s an onshore reef at Normanville that’s just perfect for snorkelers. If you’re into fishing and scuba diving be sure to check out Second Valley Beach. On the eastern side of the peninsula Goolwa and Middleton Beaches are great surfing destinations. Those on family short trips from Adelaide will also appreciate Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot, with a sheltered bay, lifeguards, and gentle waves.

National and Conservation Parks

Not a fan of the water? Fleurieu Peninsula still has plenty to offer, particularly the spectacular Onkaparinga National Park. Featuring stunning gorges, cliffs, and remote bushland, it’s a great place for bushwalking and hiking. There’s also the Deep Creek Conservation Park, home to 15 walking trails and superb coastal views. With such a stunning variety of options, Fleurieu Peninsula is definitely one of the best weekend getaways from Adelaide.

Day Trips to Kangaroo Island

Located about four hours (drive and ferry ride) south-west of Adelaide, just off the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island is a spectacular spot and one of the best SA short holidays available. With such a long drive (and a ferry across to the island), it’s perfect for staying one or two nights and enjoying everything the island has to offer. There’s vast stretches of untamed wilderness, fantastic animals, historic buildings, and even – of course! – a few wineries.

Staying on K I Longer

Seal bay conservation park.

Start your Kangaroo Island road trip by visiting Seal Bay Conservation Park, on the southern coastline. It’s home to a huge colony of Australian sea lions, who spend their days lying around on the beach and cruising through the water. They’re very cute and fantastic to see up close, and are a genuine highlight of the island. Note that the Conservation Park is only available on official government-run guided tours, which must be booked in advance.

Flinders Chase National Park

Remarkable Rocks - Flinders Chase National Park - SA Short Trips - South Australia Road Trips

Afterwards, take your road trip west to the magnificent Flinders Chase National Park, the second-oldest national park in South Australia. There’s some stunning features here like Admiralty Arch and the Remarkable Rocks, but there’s plenty of bushland, thick forests, sheer cliffs, and loads of wildlife too. There was a severe bushfire that ravaged the landscape in 2019/2020, but the forests are recovering quickly and it’s heartening to see the kangaroos, koalas and platypus returning.

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park

On your Kangaroo Island road trip, be sure to stop by Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park (formerly known as Parndana Wildlife Park), which is home to plenty of Australian animals. There’s cuddly koalas, wombats, snakes, roos, and much more. If you’re in the mood for getting even closer, hands-on experiences are also available for an extra fee.

Produce and Wineries

Finally, round out your visit to the Island with some of the incredible produce available. Kangaroo Island is a bee sanctuary, and home to some of Australia’s best honey producers like Clifford’s Honey Farm, and Island Beehive. Naturally, excellent seafood is available, freshly caught from the ocean and awaiting your picnic or romantic night in. Be sure to check out the oysters, abalone, and marron, accompanied by a glass of wine (or two!) from one of Kangaroo Island’s great wineries.

Day Trips to Murraylands

Heading to the east, there’s plenty of great options for weekend getaways from Adelaide in the Murraylands area. Stretching along the banks of Australia’s longest river, the mighty Murray, the Murraylands region covers a wide area and has plenty to offer. The main regional city, Murray Bridge, is just an hour’s drive from central Adelaide and is a great place to start your weekend getaway. The town is pleasant and historic, with a variety of shops and cafes to explore. Don’t miss the Murray Bridge bunyip in Sturt Reserve, with its fascinating history!

Monarto Safari Park

On your way into Murraylands, be sure to stop at Monarto Safari Park (formerly known as Monarto Zoo). It’s Australia’s largest open-range zoo, and packed full of both African animals like lions, cheetah and giraffe, plus Australian favourites like wallabies, Tasmanian devils and kangaroos as well. You can even have a close-up experience with some of the animals, which is great fun for the whole family.

The Bend Motorsport Park

If your road trip needs an injection of speed, it’s hard to top Tailem Bend Motorsport Park! Just near the town of Tailem Bend, this purpose-built racing complex offers everything from hot laps to go-karting, off-roading to time trials. It might not be the most romantic weekend getaway destination, but it’s definitely one of the most exhilarating!

The Murray River , Lakes and Coorong

Lake Alexandrina - Murraylands - South Australia Road Trips

For a complete change of pace, turn your road trip into a boat trip! The sedate waters of the Murray are plied by cruise boats and paddle steamers, offering short trips, full day cruises, and overnight excursions as well. It’s a great way to see various parts of the river that are inaccessible by road, and some of the scenery is absolutely magnificent. A little further south, the Murray empties into enormous Lakes Alexandrina and Albert. The other option is the beautiful Coorong. There’s excellent water sport opportunities on both the lakes and the Coorong, so bring your kayak, your fishing rod, and your water skis, and make the most of your South Australian road trip through the Murraylands.

If you’re heading a bit further afield, one opportunity for an excellent road trip from Adelaide is spending a few days in the Riverland. Located about 2.5 hours drive north-east of Adelaide, centred on the Murray River around the area of Loxton, Berri and Renmark, the Riverland is home to magnificent scenery and some excellent produce.

Murray River National Park

Start your road trip through the area by visiting the Murray River National Park. It’s a huge area of wetlands and bush, centred on the river itself. Home to thousands of species of fish, birds and land animals, there’s plenty of hiking, fishing, camping and canoeing opportunities in the park. The most impressive section is around Katarapko, though Lyrup Flats and Bulyong are both superb as well.

After getting among nature in the National Park, pick yourself up with some fresh fruit from the Berri area. It’s one of the country’s best-known fruit growing regions, particularly for citrus and stone fruits like apples and cherries. Be sure to stop by Aggie’s Fresh Fruit Stall and Tony & Effie’s Fruit Stall in Glossop, while in nearby Berri you’ll find fresh coffee beans, bread, local wine and gin, and craft beer as well.

Houseboating

Houseboat - Weekend Getaways from Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

And when you’re all stocked up with tasty supplies, it’s time to get out on the water. The Riverland is one of the best places in Australia to rent a houseboat, which doesn’t require a special license to operate. Spend a day or two tootling up and down the river, exploring wherever the currents take you! Out on the water, operating on your own time, and with nobody for miles to bother you – it’s one of the best romantic weekend getaways Adelaide has to offer.

What people love about adelaide tours.

Wonderful trip! Highly recommend! Our guide/driver Kevin really knew Kangaroo Island and provided some flexibility in the schedule. Accommodations in both Penneshaw and Kingscote were comfortable. The breakfasts provided were very good. Favorites were Flinders Chase National Park and the Remarkable Rocks, the Penneshaw Penguins, and Seal Bay.
I enjoyed the experience, overall it was the tours fault the ITN changed due to fires, overall it was good,
An excellent trip from Adelaide to Melbourne. We were a small group that got on well and we were looked after by our guide and driver Craig. He was knowledgeable about the sites we visited and was also able to provide a detailed background to the history of each site and kept us informed regarding the local flora and fauna. The coastline along the coastal road is stunning. The accomadation was good, the younger members of the group used the shared rooms while I opted for my own room (its an age thing ) The first day was a long day travelling but we had plenty of breaks. I would recommend starting from Adelaide rather than Melbourne and finish on a long day driving on the final day I would strongly recommend this trip and the operator David

Exploring Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park

The dramatic cliffs of the Flinders Ranges are an iconic image of South Australia. The interesting volcanic geology of the region creates startlingly beautiful vistas all over the park. The hiking in top notch but the park can also be enjoyed via scenic drives and several great roadside view points.

The crescent shaped Elder Range is the first feature you come across and you start to get a sense of how great this park is going to be. The highlight however is undoubtedly Wilpena Pound. The landscape appears like a massive crater, ringed by steep cliffs and covered in forest.

hiking wilpena pound

Hiking into the lush Wilpena Pound

There are a number of hikes departing from the Wilpena Pound resort. The easiest one enters the pound through a pleasant forested valley. There is a viewpoint up a moderate hill and an old homestead to visit with history of the early settlers in the area. You can also hike to the tallest peaks in the area for the best views however these hikes are fairly strenuous and closed over summer.

The only way to get a true appreciation of the amazing feature known as the pound is with a scenic flight. None of the viewpoints offer anything approaching the view shown below. See the link below for more information on this experience.

Where to Stay in the Flinders Ranges

Best for views: Rawnsley Park Station

This station offers luxury cabins and is perfectly situated for the best views in the park. You will be spoilt with amazing opportunities for photography during the golden hours from your private balcony. There is a restaurant/bar on site and a pool to cool off in after hiking.

Best for Hiking: Wilpena Pound Resort

This accommodation is situated right at the only entrance to the ‘pound’ feature. They are a large operation with anything from luxury villas and glamping tents to unpowered camp sites. They have a really nice pool area just out the front of the restaurant/bar. This is conveniently situated right where you return from hikes into the pound and surrounding features.

Mount Gambier

Mount Gambier comes in as quite a surprise when you are from out of state and not familiar with the region. There is so much to do here that you might not be able to cover it all in one weekend, but you certainly won’t be bored!

The town is nestled right in the south-east of the state amidst a dramatic volcanic landscape. The limestone foundations of the area also create many amazing features to explore. Being South Australia there is of course delicious local wine to drink from the Limestone Coast Wine Region.

The strikingly blue crater lake

The most striking feature of Mount Gambier is the huge blue lake which is contained within a volcanic crater. There are several viewpoints around the lake accessible by vehicle. For an amazing view of the whole area head up to the Centenary Tower which is perched atop the highest hill in the area.

My personal favourite spot in town was the Umpherston Sinkhole. This is right near the centre of town and is filled with beautiful gardens and water features. Another top highlight are the limestone caves beneath the city which can be entered and explored right in town at Engelbrecht Cave.

The drive to Alligator Gorge is stunning

This beautiful national park is a perfect weekend getaway from Adelaide for avid hikers and nature lovers. Make no mistake, this is an active getaway. Hiking is the main activity and there are also some good mountain bike trails in the area.

The best way to see the park is to complete an overnight hike, there are several campgrounds along the hiking trails with good facilities. For those looking for day hikes there is a major campground on the west side of the range and a town on the east side.

Hiking into Alligator Gorge

The highlight of the park is Alligator Gorge and the road leading to it. The drive offers stunning vistas on both sides of the road as it winds it’s way up a narrow ridge. The hike from the carpark to the gorge is fairly short and easy/moderate difficulty.

Mount Remarkable itself can be hiked from either side of the park however the most direct route is from the town of Melrose. This is still a solid hike at around 14km however the grade is fairly mild. The mountain is 960m high so prepare for a decent workout!

Clare Valley

weekend trips from adelaide - clare valley

Amazing views are found down the backroads

The town of Clare is about 150km north from Adelaide and is the hub of the Clare Valley wine region. If you are an avid appreciator of all things wine then you will likely know that it is famed for it’s Rieslings.

The top highlight here is the Riesling Trail, a 35km long cycling path that runs between the towns of Auburn and Clare. The trail itself passes through beautiful scenery and is a lovely ride free from the worries of passing cars. There are many cellar doors along the route and even more a short detour away.

One of many tastings on the Riesling Trail!

A highlights of the trail is exploring the grounds of the historic Sevenhill Cellars. The tasting fee includes entrance to the cellar and the hosts were fantastic at explaining some of the history around the grounds.

The pretty town of Auburn is a great place to grab lunch at the half way point. We highly recommend hiring electric bikes as the return journey is a slight uphill incline. Innes National Park

adelaide weekend tours

Find a beach to yourself in Innes National Park

Located on the Yorke Peninsula, about 3 hours drive from Adelaide, is the rugged and wild Innes National Park. This park is remote and surrounded by coastline on 3 sides, making it a great place for a wilderness escape.

The main thing to do in this park is hunting down your own beach to relax on all day. To be fair there might be some other people around but there are a lot of beautiful beaches compared to very few people.

adelaide weekend tours

Cape Spencer Lighthouse

Make sure to check out Dolphin Beach and Pondalowie Bay as these are some of the best examples of the beaches in this park. Other top attractions include Inneston Lake and the West Cape lookout. Marion Bay just outside the park is also a really nice beach.

There are a couple of places to stay inside or just outside the national park however the most popular choice is camping. The stars are amazing out here so make the most of it by sleeping outdoors! Many of the beaches and bays have campgrounds nearby, check out this link to browse and book campsites.

McLaren Vale

weekend getaways from adelaide - mclaren vale

Admiring the stunning views at Pannell Enoteca

The glorious vine covered hills of McLaren Vale are located just 40 minutes south of Adelaide’s centre. After visiting all the major wine regions in South Australia it was my personal favourite for scenery. There are some great cellar doors here with some big names in wine as well as smaller producers well worth exploring.

D’Arenburg is a famous stop on the trail and it’s quirky architecture and fantastic art collection are a must see. They offer some great experiences such as blending your own wine with a bottle to take away at the end! Entry to the cube includes a wine tasting but the Salvador Dali art gallery does cost extra.

Limestone Coast/Robe

adelaide weekend tours

The picturesque ‘obelisk’ of Robe

While the Limestone Coast region encompasses many towns, including inland, this getaway is all about the coast . Robe is the main town along the beautiful stretch of beaches that is the coastal border of the Limestone Coast region.

Apart from the iconic Robe Obelisk, the main attraction is the 14km Long Beach. This huge stretch of sand and clear water can be driven along so if you have a 4WD you’ll be able to find your own little slice. The town centre has several heritage buildings and a great brewery called Robe Town Brewery.

You can easily take trips to the other towns in the area, namely Kingston SE and Beachport. You can also choose to base yourself here as they also have accommodation options. Beachport is where you’ll find the nicest beaches; Salmon Hole and Glenn Point are known for their beautiful white sand and blue water.

Beachport jetty at sunset

In Kingston SE you’ll find the giant lobster, which is always great for a pic. Long Beach can be accessed from here, as well as Coorong National Park which has fantastic 4WD trails. Fleurieu Peninsula

weekend getaways from adelaide - fleurieu peninsula

The dramatic sandstone cliffs of Sellicks Beach

The Fleurieu Peninsula is situated under an hour’s drive south of Adelaide. There is so much to explore here that it will be impossible to do in one weekend getaway from Adelaide, but luckily it’s so close that you can keep coming back!

The best place to base yourself if it’s your first time visiting is the town of Victor Harbour. There is a lot to do here and you can easily drive to other top attractions in the region. On the way there you can stop at Sellicks Beach, the interesting sandstone cliffs here have become a popular spot for photographers.

adelaide weekend tours

Take a historic steam train ride in Victor Harbour

Make sure you check out the Cockle Train for a super fun seafront ride. There is also a horse drawn tramway that is a really unique experience that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. The rugged Granite Island is another top highlight that can be explored on walks from the town centre.

Other top attractions on the peninsula can be easily reached from town. Deep Creek National Park offers beautiful hikes and the beaches of Rapid Bay and Second Valley are popular highlights.

Day trip to the Blue Eye from Saranda

Before Luke Combs kicks off his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" tour in Milwaukee this week, he went on another kind of tour. One that is quintessentially Brew City.

Combs, one of country music's biggest stars, is playing two shows at American Family Field : One Friday and another Saturday. But ahead of that, he took a tour of the Miller Brewery . And, we got to tag along.

Yes, he was every bit as kindhearted, down-to-earth and genuine as he seems. And yes, he shotgunned a beer just like he does on stage. Except this time, he was hanging out on a brewhouse rooftop with the iconic giant red Miller sign and the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark as his backdrop.

Not only did Combs — a longtime Miller Lite fan and years-long partner — see where the magic happens, he also checked out the specialty packaging on cases and cans that's coming out in honor of his blockbuster tour.

"It's just surreal, you know?" Combs told the Journal Sentinel. "I feel like I get to live so many amazing, surreal moments. And, I'm really thankful for that for sure. It's crazy. It's crazy."

Here's what we learned about Combs' tour and what he got into on the Miller tour. And, how about his eight Academy of Country Music Awards nominations that were announced earlier this week? We asked him about those, too.

Luke Combs talks about his 'Growin' Up and Gettin' Old' tour and why he's kicking it off in the Midwest

A or A+ shows don't cut it for Combs. He's shooting for A++.

"I try to do everything I can do to take care of my voice, take care of myself, make sure that we're doing everything we can," Combs said. "People that come are the only reason we get to do what we do. Putting on an A++ show is really important to me."

About to embark on his 25-date stadium tour, he's excited — and "a little nervous."

"You feel like you're standing at the bottom of a mountain and you're looking at the top a little bit," he said.

But after last year's "Luke Combs World Tour," he said he feels more prepared for what's ahead of him.

"We've played everywhere all over the world," Combs said. "But, the Midwest, it feels like home to me. So, good place to start it."

HOW TO AVOID TRAFFIC: Luke Combs concerts could cause delays on I-94 this weekend

Combs, who grew up in North Carolina, hadn't been anywhere close to Milwaukee when he started his music career — his first plane ride came at age 25. But, he remembers his earlier stops up here fondly.

He opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made an appearance at Farm Aid at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

"The Midwest is like the best fans in the world," Combs said. "I mean, honestly. People probably say that all the time."

But, that doesn't mean pulling out of the driveway Tuesday night wasn't hard after the "amazing" time he spent with his "awesome" wife Nicole and their two sons — Tex and Beau — these past few months. Fortunately, he won't have to miss his other half too long. She'll be headed up this way this weekend.

What will always make it onto Combs' setlist this time around? "The songs that people would expect," Combs shared.

"Playing all the hits," he said. "That's why people are there, and I want to give them what they want."

But, each night of the tour will have a different vibe.

Combs' opening acts Friday — in the order they'll hit the stage — are the Wilder Blue, Charles Wesley Godwin and Cody Jinks.

"Friday's more in the Americana, singer-songwriter world," Combs said. "So, our set reflects that a little bit. But, obviously, still playing all the hits."

Saturday's openers will be Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

"Saturday night is more mainstream, Top 40 country stuff, which is what I do, really," Combs said.

Combs loves watching Jinks and Davis perform — they keep him honest, he said — and he knows they're going to kick some you know what.

The first opener will start at 5:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tailgating will be permitted. Give yourself plenty of time to drive in and get through security.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. Saturday with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at Am Fam Field's Third Base Plaza, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase.

Luke Combs' love for Miller Lite and his visit to Miller Brewery

After getting into Milwaukee Wednesday morning, Combs hung out at the Brewers stadium for a couple of hours, worked out, then was off to the Miller Brewery.

How long has Combs been a fan of Miller Lite? "Forever, probably."

"My dad's been drinking it for a long time," Combs said. "It was always around the house."

If his music career never worked out, he said, he would still be sporting a Columbia fishing shirt and drinking a Miller Lite somewhere in the world.

"That's what I would be doing anyways," he said. "So, I really wanted to go after things that I was already passionate about that felt natural and authentic to me. So, I'm very thankful for (Molson Coors) being receptive to have me on board. I feel super lucky."

Sporting a Brewers Barrelman hat, Combs and his team walked into a conference room on the brewery's complex Wednesday. He was met by a small group of longtime brewery employees and other Molson Coors staffers. The beer cases and cans with his new specialty packaging were displayed on tables.

The design features a ribbon that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart" wrapped in between the tuning pegs of a guitar. Combs' name is at the top of the headstock.

LUKE COMBS IN MILWAUKEE: Country superstar introduces heartbreaking new baseball-tinged song at American Family Field

After everyone went around the room introducing themselves, they were instructed to suit up in PPE — yellow safety vests, glasses, hard hats, toe caps and headsets.

On Combs' VIP tour of the brewery, he got a first-hand — and at times, hands-on — look at the operations with facts and history lessons along the way.

The first stop was a packaging plant, where Combs met machinist Jeff Malecki who has "But they ain't seen us together" from Combs' song "Forever After All" tattooed across his arm.

The two shook hands and got a picture together. That would become a reoccurring scene throughout Combs' visit.

It seemed like every employee who crossed paths with Combs received a handshake. And, if they wanted a photo or autograph, they got those, too, without any hesitation.

In the warehouse, Combs saw cases with the specialty packaging sliding out of a machine — he pulled his phone out to document that — and stacks of those cases getting carried off on a pallet via forklift.

At one point, Combs stood in front of what looked like a mountain of the cases. "Get this one," he said to a photographer as he hugged the cases as far as his arms would stretch.

Later, he'd get to snag one of the cans right off of a quick-moving line.

He got a taste of that and a few different brewery roles, including one that involved flipping a cardboard box filled with unconstructed cases into place. A few cases snuck out the back, but not too shabby for a first-timer.

"Thanks for letting me do that," Combs said to the workers as he shook their hands. "Thanks for letting me be in the way."

Combs also tried his hand at adding hops, one of which was liquid. "Have y'all seen 'Superbad'?" Combs asked with a bucket of hops in hand.

It reminded him of the scene when McLovin was trying to buy booze at a liquor store and said to the cashier: "You know, I heard they recently decided to add more hops to it."

Toward the conclusion of the tour, Combs said he had a "truly amazing" time. But, his favorite part had to be the grand finale.

He got to go up on a brewhouse rooftop with striking views of the city, the home of the Brewers and that big red Miller sign.

Up there is where he shotgunned a beer in under 5 seconds, and had the honor of sampling an exclusive maturation stock that not many get to try.

"To be standing up here is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Combs said.

How about those eight ACM Awards nominations

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced earlier this week. Combs leads the nominations with eight , including entertainer of the year, male artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year, single of the year and music event of the year.

"It's really awesome," he said. "Always surprising, I think ... In a lot of ways, it feels like I've been doing this a lifetime. And, in a lot of ways, I feel like I've been doing it for six months. So, I feel like sometimes I'm so conflicted with knowing what to feel or think ... It's an honor. It's my wildest dreams coming true. So, I'm a very lucky guy every day."

A 2024 win via Combs nomination for entertainer of the year would clinch the coveted triple crown award, which consists of an entertainer of the year win plus wins in an act's respective new artist (male, female, duo, or group) and artist (male, female, duo or group) categories, a USA TODAY report said.

The event will air on Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on May 16.

Piet Levy of the Journal Sentinel staff and USA TODAY contributed to this report.

AFL boss refuses to compare Jeremy Finlayson slur to previous incidents as punishment looms

Sport AFL boss refuses to compare Jeremy Finlayson slur to previous incidents as punishment looms

Jeremy Finlayson's head in his hands

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon will not be drawn on how Jeremy Finlayson's homophobic insult compares to other slurs as the league ponders a punishment for the Port Adelaide forward.

Finlayson directed a homophobic slur towards an Essendon player during the third quarter of the Power's 69-point victory over the Bombers at Adelaide Oval on Friday night.

It is understood an umpire's microphone picked up the insult, which was heard by multiple players, and at least one Essendon player also called it out.

The 28-year-old apologised to the target of his slur following the match, and on Sunday made a formal apology, describing his words as "unacceptable".

Dillon was asked how Finlayson's comment measured up to a racial slur.

"We take them all really seriously and I don't think you can compare and contrast," he said.

"But all of them are different. We don't like them and that's why we're looking into it and that's why there'll be an accountability."

What that "accountability" will be remains unclear, with suspensions and fines among the options.

Last month, North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson was fined $20,000 and given a suspended two-match ban for abusing St Kilda defenders Jimmy Webster and Dougal Howard during a pre-season game.

Clarkson was asked to explain his actions to the AFL after allegedly using the homophobic slur "c*******er" during the practice match.

Jeremy Finlayson in action against Essendon

In 2021, Adelaide forward Taylor Walker received a six-game ban for uttering a racist remark about a rival reserves player.

Dillon would not put a specific time frame on the Finlayson punishment, but confirmed it would be handed down before the next round, which starts on Thursday.

"We take these allegations very seriously, so we will run a full investigation," he said.

"There will be an accountability for Jeremy at the end of that investigation. The time line on it is it will be done before the next round of matches.

"I don't think there's any place for that anywhere, let alone the league.

"We take this really seriously and I would prefer to run a proper investigation and a proper process to get to the right outcome."

Asked whether a punishment for Finlayson should be a "captain's call" made by him, Dillon indicated that lay with football boss Laura Kane and general counsel Stephen Meade.

"We've got really extensive rules and regulations that deal with that and ultimately it's a call for our head of football and our general counsel, and they'll make that when they've got all the information in front of them," he said.

Dillon was speaking at a post-Gather Round press conference, where the AFL and the SA government announced the Barossa Valley would host a game in 2025.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 36-hole cut at the Masters is different than any other major championship. The 89-man field will be cut to the low 50 and ties after 36 holes is completed.

Thursday’s first round was suspended due to darkness after the start of play was delayed more than two hours by morning storms. The second round is expected to begin on schedule at 8 a.m., however.

The cut was first instituted in 1957, 23 years after the Masters began. The field was cut to the low 40 and ties from 1957-61, but the cut changed the next year with the institution of the 10-shot rule. From 1962-2012, the field was cut to the low 44 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.

Over the following seven years, the 36-hole cut was expanded to the low 50 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader. The 10-shot rule was done away with in 2020, however, and now the low 50 and ties qualify for the final 36 holes at the Masters.
