She was great, the musicians were great!

Her music is so sensual and groovy and she has an amazing voice live!

It is a shame that the audience did not really dance, but I find this to be a problem in Germany in general...

Poppy Ajudha interview: 'I know it benefits me being a lighter skin colour. I want to talk about it'

poppy ajudha tour

Poppy Ajudha isn’t in a hurry for change. She knows it’s coming. In the meantime, the singer-songwriter is busy making stuff happen: writing bold, beautiful tunes with lyrics that provoke thought and spark debate. Headlining shows that begin with all-female panel discussions chaired by Ajudha herself. Modelling for magazines and high-profile advertising campaigns — she’s a face of Nike’s womenswear range — despite not being stick-thin and mile-high tall.

“If it challenges societal norms then I’m up for it,” grins Ajudha, 24, kitted out in cargo pants and trainers and tucking into pancakes in a café in Lewisham, not far from where she grew up, the youngest of three daughters of a British mother and a St Lucia-born British father who separated when she was small.

“My songs talk about my personal experiences, which are things that affect many young women whether it’s to do with race, class, gender, sexuality or the constant pressure to prove your worth,” she says, the blue snake tattoo on her left forearm — a reclaiming of the Bible’s original sin myth — moving as she gesticulates. “I want people to take more from my gigs than just the music.”

Still, Ajudha’s music is what got her noticed: a jazz -and-soul-infused sound lit up by sparkling grooves, syrup-slow synths and crystalline vocals that soothe and elevate. Two EPs, 2017’s Femme and last year’s Patience (“You conjure a radical patience in me,” she croons on She’s the Sum), have led to 10 million streams, a headline tour of the UK and Europe, and gongs including Best Soul Act at last month’s Jazz FM Awards.

All this, and 2018 closed with her upbeat feature on Tom Misch track Disco Yes, — which was included on former US President Barack Obama’s now famed end-of-year playlist.

“Over the past few months I’ve felt so inspired to keep going,” says Ajudha, whose forthcoming single, Strong Woman, calls out the microaggressions, sexism and double standards that many women face each day, and notes the way pressures can build up and implode.

The best new music festivals in London for 2019

Fans tell her they find solace in her lyrics. Laddish young men (“who are not taught to be self reflective”) say she’s got them thinking about their relationships. Young women say she gives them hope. “If I can help even a few people feel more comfortable about themselves,” she says, “it’s therapy for me as well.”

Ajudha wasn’t always so confident. Sometimes, she wavers. “I’m unstable,” she declares at the start of Strong Woman, naming the feelings accompanying a recent mini-breakdown prompted by the stresses of being an independent artist, of maintaining creative control. For the most part, however, she relies on a sense of self that was transformed while studying for a degree in anthropology and music at SOAS, University of London. The working-class kid who “never knew things like anthropology and gender studies existed” discovered the power that comes with critical thought.

“My mum suggested SOAS, and it changed my life,” she offers. “I learned that things are nuanced, that right and wrong is a matter of perspective. I found a safe space to explore feminism and queer politics and who I could be.”

Her songwriting changed as a result. 2017’s Tepid Soul, a song-poem about mixed-race identity, references the hypersexualisation of light-skinned people of colour (“Am I the right shade for you?”), along with colourism in the black community: “I know it benefits me being a lighter skin colour,” she says, “but how fair is it? I want to talk about it.” Last year’s Spilling Into You, which features rapper Kojey Radical, looks at love in all its guises while giving the finger to objectification, exoticisation and toxic masculinity (an accompanying video by director Ali Kurr features Ajudha alongside female creatives including jewellery designer Suhaiyla Shakuwra and writer and model Hélène Kleih).

Then there’s Devil’s Juice, a tune that challenges prescribed ideas of how we are supposed to act and behave, incorporating the ideas of French philosopher Michel Foucault and Jeanette Winterson’s classic 1985 lesbian coming-of-age novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, along the way. If all this sounds too worthy, too woke … well, too bad. Ajudha is on her path, and inspired by the likes of her mum (“the strongest woman I know”) and Solange Knowles, whose Grammy-winning album A Seat at the Table is a source of liberation, she is forging ahead regardless.

Ajudha feels most alive when writing late at night, alone in her room in a shared house in south-east London: “When lyrics and chords start pouring out, I can’t get in the way. I’m like a vessel for creativity.”

She was always surrounded by music: the rare groove, jazz and Motown records that her mother played in their council house, and the roots reggae and rocksteady pulsing from the Deptford nightclub owned by her father. “I’d stay at my dad’s when I was five or six and wake up because the bed was shaking with the bass. Then I’d run downstairs crying and someone would always scoop me up, hold me above their head and Dad would come and get me.”

At school she wrote poetry, and songs about love that she was yet to experience. She’d walk down the street singing with friends, who told her she could be as big as Adele; encouraged, she put on her first gig aged 16 in a pub in New Cross: “My mum was on the door.” She applied to the Brit School but bottled out of the audition; then came a slot at Steez, the roving south-east London jam night that served as an entry point for the now booming new jazz underground , birthing the careers of King Krule, Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and more.

“It was a space where we could learn and perform and see what experimentation was,” says Ajudha, who has since collaborated with several of the musicians and producers who’d gather there. “I sat in jeans and a white vest and played to about 10 people. I was this nervous teenager; I knew nothing back then.”

She knows a lot more now. Indeed, after her headline slot at the Village Underground last month — which saw her joined in an onstage chat with actor and playwright Michaela Coel and DJ and radio show host Jamz Supernova (“We wanted to humanise successful women who’ve overcome struggles”) — her friend Gilles Peterson tweeted that Ajudha should be prime minister.

“Life doesn’t always give us what we want, so we have to work for change,” says Ajudha with sweet ferocity. “We have to be patient for growth, whether it’s personal or political, and know that when change comes you have to work towards more change.” She flashes a grin. “You wait, and you keep going.”

Poppy Ajudha announces debut album ‘The Power In Us’ with new single ‘London’s Burning’

"I hope it flips a switch in your mind, like it did for mine," she said of the record

a black-and-white press shot of Poppy Ajudha

Poppy Ajudha has announced her debut album ‘The Power In Us’ – you can listen to the new single ‘London’s Burning’ below.

The singer will release her first full-length effort on March 11, 2022, having this year shared the tracks ‘Weakness’ and ‘Change Your Mind’. You can pre-order/pre-save it here now.

Speaking about ‘London’s Buring’, which arrived today (November 25), Ajudha explained: “I wrote this song on the legacy of colonialism and the irony that even when we have taken almost everything from most of the globe, ruining countries and communities throughout history to build our own, we are still so quick to close our doors to those in need, even when it is us who have played the biggest roles in destabilising the countries they come from.

“It is also a nod to the youth movements desperately trying to change minds and break down stereotypes to create a fairer and more compassionate world.”

See the official video below.

‘The Power In Us’ boasts production work from Wyn Bennett ( Haim , Janelle Monae ), Karma Kid ( Dua Lipa , Arlo Parks ), Wesley Singerman ( Kendrick Lamar , Anderson .Paak ) and Taylor Dexter ( Ray BLK ).

According to Ajudha, the forthcoming record “is made up of all the things swimming in my mind, from women’s rights, to the right to cross borders, to the power of young people to inspire and be unafraid to rock the boat in the name of progress.”

She continued: “Women don’t have to be just what they are taught to be, there is so much more to us than Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Girlfriends and our relation to men. I want men to engage more heavily in feminism and really see how their defiance against it only holds both women and men back. There are so many boxes we put ourselves in; I want us all to break out of them.

“We are in an era of so much information and I feel the weight that young people take on because we are the generation bombarded with global politics and a million causes that need fighting for. This calls for better understanding around mental health and a society that nurtures us rather than demands of us everything we have until all that is left is our demons.”

Ajudha concluded: “Every song on this album touches on these issues because they are all I think about every day, all I see around me in my friends and my family. I hope it flips a switch in your mind, like it did for mine.”

Poppy Ajudha announces details of debut album ‘The Power In Us’ – listen to single ‘London’s Burning’ now

The londoner's politically conscious first full-length will arrive in march next year.

By Joe Goggins

Poppy Ajudha press shot, 2021

Poppy Ajudha has revealed details of her debut album, ‘The Power In Us’, and previewed it with new single ‘London’s Burning’ – hear it below.

The Londoner’s first-full length is set to arrive on March 11th, 2022. Yesterday’s (November 25) release of ‘London’s Burning’ follows earlier standalone singles ‘Weakness’ and ‘Change Your Mind’. You can pre-order or pre-save the album here .

In a statement to accompany ‘London’s Burning’, Ajudha delved into the soulful, contemplative cut’s thematic origins. “I wrote this song on the legacy of colonialism,” she explained, “and the irony that even when we have taken almost everything from most of the globe, ruining countries and communities throughout history to build our own, we are still so quick to close our doors to those in need, even when it is us who have played the biggest roles in destabilising the countries they come from.”

Expanding on the track, Ajudha continued: “It is also a nod to the youth movements desperately trying to change minds and break down stereotypes to create a fairer and more compassionate world.”

‘The Power In Us’ twelve tracks will feature production from Karma Kid, Wesley Singerman, Taylor Dexter and Wyn Bennett. The album looks set to delve into a number of sociopolitical themes, as referenced in Ajudha’s announcement. “[‘The Power In Us’] is made up of all the things swimming in my mind, from women’s rights, to the right to cross borders, to the power of young people to inspire and be unafraid to rock the boat in the name of progress,” she said.

“Women don’t have to be just what they are taught to be, there is so much more to us than Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Girlfriends and our relation to men. I want men to engage more heavily in feminism and really see how their defiance against it only holds both women and men back. There are so many boxes we put ourselves in; I want us all to break out of them.”

Continuing to discuss the record’s message, she went on: “We are in an era of so much information and I feel the weight that young people take on because we are the generation bombarded with global politics and a million causes that need fighting for. This calls for better understanding around mental health and a society that nurtures us rather than demands of us everything we have until all that is left is our demons.”

In conclusion, Ajudha said: “Every song on this album touches on these issues because they are all I think about every day, all I see around me in my friends and my family. I hope it flips a switch in your mind, like it did for mine.”

The full-track listing for ‘The Power In Us’ is as follows:

  • ‘WHO’S FUTURE, OUR FUTURE!’

poppy ajudha tour

Poppy Ajudha epitomises the uniquely diverse musical culture that exists in London. Her South London born, St. Lucian-British background, the scene she has grown up in, and the musicians and creatives she regularly works with have all been pivotal in the forward thinking, socio-politically aware unique blend of Soul, R&B, Jazz and Pop that she is creating. Her releases have seen her rack up over 20million streams, play headline shows across the UK, U.S. and Europe, win awards and pick up some famous fans along the way. Unafraid to stand up for what she believes in, her lyrics speak of feminism, colonialism, gender politics, current social issues and other deeply personal topics.

POPPY AJUDHA RETURNS WITH THE RELEASE OF NEW TRACK ‘LOW RIDE’ FT. THIS YEAR’S BRIT NOMINATED MAHALIA

ANNOUNCES HER FIRST HEADLINE SHOW AT EARTH, LONDON - 28TH APRIL

Today, Poppy Ajudha returns with mesmerising new track and visual ‘Low Ride’ featuring BRIT nominee Mahalia . It’s not too often listeners are blessed with two female songstresses whose vocals compliment each other so well. On this track Poppy and Mahalia link up to put together a memorable track for their fans. Listen here . Laced with the underlying classic jazz and soul elements  Poppy’s  sound is recognised for,  ‘ Low Ride’  is a captivating expression of both songstresses’ sultry vocal ability. The track also features contributions from some of the most prominent Jazz figures in the London scene - such as, Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon-Jones, Dylan Jones and Kiran Kai .

Opening with what can only be described as pure acapella bliss, the track develops, presenting us with an infectious bassline, drum pattern and lyrics highlighting the romanticism and passion of you, your lover and the open road.

Poppy Ajudha

Poppy’s ability to juxtapose female freedom and a carefree nature alongside the ability to be a seductive, sexual being preserves, and signifies her overall theme of powerful, unapologetic femininity. The visuals for  ‘Low Ride’  highlight the track’s main theme, with the car being used as the location of love. Black and white visuals are a reoccurring theme in  Poppy’s  releases, as seen previously in videos like  ‘Spilling Into You’ , and add a depth, allowing viewers to focus solely on the abstract content that switches quickly from  Poppy’s  sensual gazes, to staggered views of the vehicle, to the fragmented view of the lovers in a snapshot style.  “Raindrops, red lights, your eyes, headlights, like love you appear”  are lyrical terms that connect us with the feeling of the immense passion portrayed by the track, the speed in which the video progresses mirror this movement, and the climactic ascension of unwavering desire. Appearing mid-video,  Mahalia  makes her debut as the camera pans across to reveal the Leicester -native alongside  Poppy , poised under a streetlight highlighting her presence in the video. The narrative progresses to show both females, carefree in movement, whilst the lover’s narrative is further elaborated as we are presented again with a seductive visual of  Poppy , interjected by the disjointed clips of the lovers once more.

Poppy Ajudha

‘Low Ride’ serves as yet another example of  b>Poppy’s  imminent rise in the spotlight. With a new project on the horizon, 2020 is set to be a ground-breaking year for the singer. Having previously supported household names such as Kate Tempest and Tom Misch on their respective tours as well performing her own sold-out headline shows at London’s Village Underground and a UK & European tour last year, Poppy ’s ready to take the world by storm. This January, she played two shows in New York city and announces a one off headline show at EartH in Dalston for 28th April 2020.

About Poppy:

Poppy Ajudha is a 24-year-old singer songwriter from South London. Her unique vocal tone and melodies conjure comparisons to some of the great classic jazz and soul singers. Combining this with her ability to sound fresh and exhilarating sets Poppy apart and places her at the forefront of the South London music scene– the most fertile and important scene in Europe right now. With a Saint Lucian born British father and British mother she grew up with a diverse set of influences and ideas. Musically, while her dad played a lot of Motown and Roots Reggae, her mother familiarized her to rare groove, funky and soul music through the tapes she’d play during long car journeys to visit family. Also through her mother, Poppy was introduced to feminism – independence and strength was felt through the way she bought Poppy and her sisters up. Alongside her love for music, Poppy holds interest in colonialism and its effects in the postcolonial era, gender and the shaping of current social issues as a product of historical perspectives. She is a first-class BA Anthropology and Music graduate from the School of Oriental and African studies. Her studies questioned the western centric outlook through which we view and homogenise music of different cultures, as well as how gender plays a part in the creation and production of music – all of which is epitomized through her lyrics.

In addition to 2 critically acclaimed EPs - ‘Femme’ & ‘Patience’ and recent single Devil’s Juice, Poppy’s headline shows have taken her around the UK and Europe including a sold-out show at London’s Village Underground. She has previously toured with the likes of Kate Tempest, Tom Misch and Mahalia. Poppy has also appeared as the face of Nike’s FA18 Womenswear ‘Metallic Sheen’ campaign and was the face of outdoor-wear brand Napapijiri’s Global winter ‘Icons’ Campaign . She was awarded Jazz FM’s Soul Act of the Year and nominated for 2xUK MVAs.

It wasn’t to stop there as Poppy was selected to feature on former US President Barack Obama’s end of year playlist for her feature on Tom Misch’s ‘Disco Yes’. With all of this and much more to come this year including more shows and new music – 2020 looks to be another trailblazing year for the singer.
