Yes, with some exceptions, Indians typically need a visa to visit Bangladesh. However, holders of diplomatic and official passports may be exempt for stays up to 45 days.

Unfortunately, Indian citizens cannot currently obtain a visa on arrival (VOA) in Bangladesh. While some countries enjoy this convenience, India is not on the list.

If you're planning a trip to Bangladesh, you'll need to apply for a visa beforehand through the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi or a Bangladesh visa application center.

Bangladesh offers various types of visas to accommodate different purposes of travel. These visa types include:

The good news for Indian citizens is that there is no visa fee charged by Bangladesh for any visa category [Bangladesh High Commission New Delhi, India]. This applies to tourist visas, business visas, student visas, and others.

However, it's important to note that there might be other fees involved in the visa application process, such as:

  • Service charges: These are levied by the Bangladesh High Commission or visa application center to cover processing costs.
  • Courier charges (optional): If you choose to have your passport returned via courier service.

Be sure to check with the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi or your chosen visa application center for their current service charges and any additional fees you might encounter.

The processing time for a Bangladesh visa for Indian citizens is generally 5 to 7 working days .

However, the actual processing time may vary due to a range of factors, including:

  • Visa type (tourist visas process faster).
  • Bangladesh High Commission workload.
  • Application method (in person or by mail).

Bangladesh Visa Processing Time

It depends on the type of visa you currently hold and how long you intend to stay in Bangladesh. Here's a breakdown:

Short-term visas (tourist, business, transit): These visas are typically valid for 30 days to 3 months. If your stay exceeds the validity period, you will need to renew your visa before it expires.

Long-term visas (student, work): These visas might be issued for the duration of your studies or employment contract, with possibilities for renewals.

General Steps for Visa Renewal (if applicable):

  • Review your current visa and note the expiry date.
  • Check the Bangladesh embassy or consulate website for renewal requirements and procedures. These may differ depending on your visa type.
  • Gather the necessary documents for renewal. This might include your passport, visa application form, proof of travel insurance, and possibly additional documents depending on your visa type.
  • Submit your application and required documents to the Bangladesh embassy or consulate. There might be associated fees for renewal.

The process for renewing a Bangladesh visa for Indian passport holders typically involves several steps:

Check Visa Validity: Determine the expiration date of your current Bangladesh visa to ensure you start the renewal process on time.

Collect Required Documents: Gather all the necessary documents for visa renewal. This may include a completed visa renewal application form, a valid passport with remaining validity of at least six months, passport-sized photographs, proof of sufficient funds to support your stay, and any other documents requested by the Bangladesh authorities.

Visit Bangladesh Embassy or Consulate: Indian passport holders can apply for visa renewal at the Bangladesh Embassy or Consulate in India. Visit the official website of the embassy or consulate to obtain information on the visa renewal process, required documents, and any fees involved.

Submit Application: Fill out the visa renewal application form accurately and completely. Attach all required documents and submit them to the Bangladesh Embassy or Consulate either in person or through a designated visa processing center.

Pay Fees: Pay the visa renewal fees as required by the Bangladesh authorities. Fees may vary depending on the type of visa and the duration of stay.

Wait for Processing: After submitting your application and documents, wait for the processing of your visa renewal. Processing times may vary, so it's essential to apply well in advance of your visa's expiration date.

Collect Passport: Once your visa renewal is approved, collect your passport with the renewed visa from the Bangladesh Embassy or Consulate or through the designated visa processing center.

Check Visa Details: Upon receiving your passport, verify that the visa details, including the validity dates and any specific conditions, are correct.

If you're already in Bangladesh and need to extend your stay beyond the validity of your current visa, you may apply for a visa extension. Here's an overview of the Bangladesh visa extension process:

Eligibility: Check if you are eligible for a visa extension according to Bangladesh's immigration laws. Extensions are typically granted for valid reasons such as medical treatment, tourism, business, or other legitimate purposes.

Prepare Required Documents: Gather the necessary documents for visa extension, which may include a completed visa extension application form, a valid passport with remaining validity, proof of sufficient funds to support your extended stay, and any other documents as required by the Bangladesh authorities.

Visit Immigration Office: Go to the nearest Immigration Office in Bangladesh to submit your visa extension application. You may need to schedule an appointment or visit during specified hours, so it's advisable to check the office's operating hours and procedures beforehand.

Submit Application: Fill out the visa extension application form accurately and completely. Attach all required documents and submit them to the Immigration Office. Be prepared to pay any applicable fees for the visa extension.

Interview or Verification: Depending on the circumstances, you may be required to attend an interview or undergo a verification process by immigration authorities.

Wait for Approval: After submitting your application, wait for the immigration authorities to process and approve your visa extension. Processing times may vary, so it's essential to apply well in advance of your current visa's expiration date to avoid overstaying.

Collect Extended Visa: Once your visa extension is approved, collect the necessary documentation or visa stamp from the Immigration Office confirming your extended stay in Bangladesh.

Comply with Conditions: Make sure to comply with any conditions or restrictions imposed on your extended visa, such as maintaining valid health insurance coverage or adhering to specific travel restrictions.

Visa applications to Bangladesh can be rejected for various reasons. Some common reasons for Bangladesh visa rejections include:

Incomplete or Incorrect Documentation: Failure to submit all required documents or providing incomplete or incorrect information can lead to visa rejection.

Insufficient Funds: If the applicant cannot demonstrate sufficient financial means to cover their expenses during their stay in Bangladesh, the visa application may be rejected.

Travel History: Applicants with a history of overstaying visas or being denied entry into other countries may face visa rejection.

Travel Purpose: If the stated purpose of travel is unclear or not supported by appropriate documentation, such as an invitation letter for business or a travel itinerary for tourism, the visa application may be rejected.

Security Concerns: Applicants with a criminal record or suspected involvement in illegal activities may face visa rejection due to security concerns.

Health Issues: If the applicant is deemed to pose a health risk to public safety in Bangladesh or lacks appropriate medical insurance coverage, the visa application may be rejected.

False Information or Fraud: Providing false information or using fraudulent documents in support of the visa application can lead to automatic rejection and potential legal consequences.

Previous Visa Violations: Applicants who have violated visa regulations or overstayed their previous visa in Bangladesh may face rejection of subsequent visa applications.

Lack of Ties to Home Country: If the applicant is unable to demonstrate strong ties to their home country, such as stable employment, property ownership, or family commitments, the visa application may be rejected due to concerns about the applicant's intention to return.

Are you thinking of applying for the Indian visa from Bangladesh?

Being a Bangladeshi citizen, and applying for Indian visa has its perks. Bangladeshi citizens wishing to visit India will be able to do so without prior appointments. The decision is in effect since 2017.

That means, if you wish to travel to India, you can submit your Indian visa applications without prior appointments. If you have confirmed air, bus, or train tickets from authorized operators, then you can submit your visa application directly to Indian High Commission without prior appointments.

New Visa Application Rule

Previously the visa application made to Indian High Commission is used to be made via the eToken system. However, the Indian High Commission has confirmed in 2016 that they have taken initiatives to ease the visa application processing.

Tourist Visa Application Rule

Starting from January 01, 2017; Bangladeshi nationals can walk in, and put forward their applications to the Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC). The Indian Visa Application Center is located in Mirpur, Dhaka. You are eligible for Indian visa without arranging a prior appointment from October 10 onwards.

The new visa application rule is intended to ease access to the Indian visa, and strengthen people to people relationship between India and Bangladesh. At least that is what the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh said.

Visa applicants are hereby requested to submit their application between 8:30an to 12:30 pm. Once you have submitted the application to the Indian High Commission for the tourist visa, you won’t be required to submit confirmed tickets to India.

Since there are other schemes based on non-tourist visas, such as business visa, medical visa, conference visa, etc., you have other walk-in application schemes available for them as well. Separate counters for walk-in tourist visas are also opened.

India tourist visa from the embassy

This article is a complete guide to obtaining India tourist visa from the embassy or consulate. You can learn everything about India tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility, documents needed, fee and application procedure.

Indian missions around the world issue India tourist visas for those that require a visa to enter India. Most nationalities are eligible to apply for an e-Visa or Visa on Arrival. But there are a handful of nationalities that are not eligible. These nationalities must apply for a tourist visa at their nearest Indian embassy or consulate.

Nationalities that are eligible for India e-Visa or India Visa on Arrival are also eligible to apply for an Indian tourist visa from their nearest Indian embassy or consulate. There may be occasions where a tourist visa from the embassy is a better choice than an India e-Visa or India Visa on Arrival . For example, US nationals can get a 10-year tourist visa from the embassy vs an Indian e-Visa which is only valid for 5 years. So a tourist visa from the embassy is a better choice in this case.

There are three types of tourist visa categories T-1, T-2 and T-3. T-1 is for tourists. T-2 is for tour groups and T-3 is for cruise passengers.

NOTE Nationals who are eligible to apply for e-Visa or Visa on Arrival can also apply for an India tourist visa from the embassy.

Pakistan citizens are restricted from obtaining Indian tourist visas from the embassy. They must apply for a special visa.

Anyone of Pakistan origin is granted only a 3-month single-entry tourist visa. Applicants whose parents or grandparents were born or ever lived in Pakistan are considered of Pakistan origin.

What are the different types of India tourist visas available?

Indian embassies offer three types of tourist visas depending on whether the applicant is an individual, a tour group or a cruise passenger. Below is a summary of the three categories of Indian tourist visas offered at the embassy.

NOTE For this article, we will focus only on the T-1 category meant for individual tourists.

What is the validity of India tourist visa?

India tourist visa is valid for 1 year, 5 years and 10 years. Your tourist visa validity varies depending on your nationality. Below is a summary of various nationalities and the corresponding tourist visa validity.

How many days can you stay in India on a tourist visa?

You can stay up to 90 days in India on a tourist visa. Canada, Japan and US nationals can stay up to 180 days. Below is the summary of permitted stay for your tourist visa depending on your nationality.

How many times can you enter India on tourist visa?

All tourist visas from India are multiple-entry, except for those of Pakistan origin. That means you can enter India as many times as you like. But there are some restrictions on how frequently you can enter India on your multiple-entry visa.

When can you enter India on a tourist visa?

You can enter India anytime during the validity of your tourist visa. You are allowed to stay 90 days on each entry (or 180 days if you are a Canada, Japan, UK or US national).

Even if you enter India on the last day of your visa validity, you will still be given 90 days of entry (or 180 days if you are a Canada, Japan, UK or US national)

When should you apply for India tourist visa?

Indian tourist visas can be applied for up to 180 days in advance. But the latest is 30 days as the visa processing takes 15-20 calendar days in some locations.

Where should you apply for Indian tourist visa?

You can apply for an India tourist visa from any Indian embassy/consulate in any country. You don’t have to be a citizen or resident of that country. You can be a tourist as well.

In case you are a non-resident or a tourist in a country, the Indian embassy where you have applied may consult the Indian embassy in your home country for the visa process. This usually does not delay the visa process.

Which airports or land borders you can enter India from using tourist visa?

You can enter India from all international airports, sea ports and land borders using an India tourist visa obtained from the Indian Embassy. There are no restrictions on where you can enter or exit the country with a tourist visa.

What is the minimum passport validity required for India tourist visa?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

How many blank pages are required in the passport for India tourist visa?

How to apply for Indian tourist visa from the embassy?

The India tourist visa application is a two-step process.

STEP 1: Online Application

Step 2: appointment.

The first step in the Indian tourist visa application process is to fill out an online application on the India visa portal .

If you are a family or group, each person must complete one online application form. There is no family application. Similarly, each person must schedule one separate visa appointment for document submission.

In the online application, you must select the Indian embassy/consulate where you plan to apply for your visa.

After filling out the application, you must print and sign it.

If the Indian embassy/consulate did not outsource the visa application to a visa application center, then you can walk into the embassy/consulate any day to pay the fee and submit your visa application.

If the Indian embassy/consulate has outsourced the visa process to a visa application center, then you will have to go to the visa application center’s website and schedule an appointment. You may be able to pay the visa fee while scheduling the appointment.

On the day of the appointment, you must submit your completed and signed application form, photographs and original passport. You must also pay the fee if you haven’t while scheduling the appointment.

If there is no visa application center near you, you can also send your completed application and documents to the visa application center by mail.

Word of caution on India tourist visa fake websites

If you search on the internet, you will see that there are many Indian visa websites posing as “official websites”. There is ONLY one OFFICIAL website for Indian tourist visas. The rest are all fake. The OFFICIAL website is below.

If applied at a visa application center such as VFS: You can track your visa application status on the visa application center’s website.

How to receive the approved India tourist visa?

Bangladesh to propose comprehensive changes to India travel agreement

An inter-ministerial meeting on sunday will gather opinions from stakeholders.

Bangladesh is set to propose substantial amendments to its travel agreement with India, focusing on enhanced convenience and flexibility for citizens travelling between the two countries.

The proposed changes include issuing visas that allow travel through any checkpost and offering flexibility for long-term medical treatments, such as allowing multiple travel.

The existing travel agreement, initiated on 1 September 1972, and last revised in January 2013, is due to expire Sunday, prompting Bangladesh to present a comprehensive proposal for its renewal.

Keep updated, follow The Business Standard's Google news channel

A senior official from the Ministry of Home Affairs anticipates the signing of the new travel agreement within the next month. To facilitate this process, Bangladesh's Security Service Division has meticulously prepared a proposal.

An inter-ministerial meeting, scheduled Sunday, will gather opinions and recommendations from relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Secondary and Higher Education, and the Ministry of Shipping.

Following the meeting, the finalised proposal will be sent to the Indian side through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, initiating a mutual exchange of opinions before the agreement is renewed.

One of the significant proposals aims to replace the term "Designated check post" with "Through any check post" in visa documentation. This change aims to provide travellers with the flexibility to choose their entry and exit points, alleviating congestion at specific checkposts and streamlining the travel process.

Similarly, the proposal includes provisions for multiple travels and the option to change hospitals during long-term medical treatments, addressing the diverse needs of individuals seeking extended medical care in either country.

Additionally, Bangladesh will propose increasing the visa-free stay period for diplomatic and official passports from 45 to 90 days. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already submitted this proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Other proposals include extending the validity of short-term double-entry visas from 3 to 6 months and recognizing river routes as a legitimate travel option. The inclusion of river routes follows recent agreements between both countries to launch river cruises.

For stays exceeding six months, the current requirement for approval from the Foreigner Registration Office or Relevant Authorities may be replaced with online registration for a Residential Permit 14 days before arrival.

Notably, there will be no changes to long-term multiple entry visas and long-term employment visas.

Bangladesh issues various visas to India, including diplomatic and official visas, short-term double-entry visas, long-term multiple-entry tourist visas, medical visas, long-term employment visas, visas for investors or businessmen, visas for journalists, visas for research scholars or fellows working in educational or research institutions, visas for students, transit visas, and double entry visas.

Crucially, there is no visa fee for travel to Bangladesh and India. In emergencies, citizens can obtain instant visas in exchange for a service charge, though this provision is seldom utilised.

Bangladesh's proposed amendments seek to streamline and enhance the travel experience for citizens of both countries.

With a significant influx of people from Bangladesh visiting India each year for education, medical care, employment, business, and tourism, these changes are poised to foster a more seamless and convenient travel relationship.

According to data from the Bureau of Immigration of India, Bangladesh contributed substantially to India's tourism sector in 2022, with 20% of tourists originating from Bangladesh, making it the second-highest contributor after the United States.

  • India relocates embassy staff from Sittwe to Yangon

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday cautioned Indians travelling to violence-hit Myanmar , saying they should observe proper safety protocols. India has also relocated its staff from its consulate in Myanmarese city of Sittwe.

Addressing a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the security situation in Myanmar remains precarious and deteriorating .

"Indians who are travelling to Myanmar should observe proper safety protocols and take care of themselves while the embassy is there to take care of them," Jaiswal said.

"The security situation in Myanmar remains precarious and deteriorating. You heard about the fighting that is going on, specifically in Rakhine state and other areas. Some time back, we issued an advisory to our nationals so that they could take due care," he further said.

The MEA said India has temporarily moved staff from its consulate in Sittwe to Yangon in view of the fighting in Rakhine state of Myanmar. However, the Consulate in Mandalay remains fully functional.

The Southeast Asian nation plunged into chaos after its military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, sparking widespread armed resistance across the country.

Recently, a relentless assault by anti-coup forces forced around 200 Myanmar military personnel to withdraw to the Friendship Bridge connecting the border town of Myawaddy to Thailand.

The anti-junta forces declared they had gained control of the critical border town of Myawaddy.

"Today KNU-led joint resistance forces captured the remaining military base in Myawaddy," Kyaw Zaw, a spokesperson for Myanmar's National Unity Government, told news agency Reuters.

The National Unity Government is a shadow administration of ousted lawmakers and anti-junta groups.

The military has already lost its control of areas along Myanmar's borders with India, China and Bangladesh. Its manpower has also been depleted.
