Våre reisemål i Afrika

Tanzania i Øst-Afrika er vårt mest populære reisemål. Her kan du oppleve et fantastisk dyreliv, blant annet ”The Big Five”, og en vakker natur med både fjell, naturreservater og innsjøer.

I Tanzania, nær grensen til Kenya, finner du Afrikas høyeste fjell, Kilimanjaro, som er 5.895 meter høyt.

Fantastisk reise med engelsktalende guide fra Cape Town til Victoria Falls eller motsatt fra Victoria Falls til Cape Town. Mange av de mest opplevelsesrike stedene i Sørlige Afrika besøkes på turen. Eksotiske Afrika har alltid inspirert fantasien hos europeerne og tiltrukket eventyrere fra nysgjerrige Livingstone til koloniherrer på jakt etter billig arbeidskraft, billige råvarer og naturligvis makt og prestisje. De gode, gamle grekerne kalte alt sør for Sahara for Etiopia, og de enorme områdene av ukjent land fremkalte forestillinger om uhyggelige uhyrer og spesielle, menneskelignende skapninger.

Å reise i Afrika

Canoe in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Visit in May to September, when animals are confined to small islands created by the annual flood, making it easy to spot great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs and more.

Where we stay on safari.

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide . 

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. 

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water). 

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

• Expect the unexpected! No two safaris are the same, and that’s part of the adventure. Your guides are experts at tracking the animals in every area, but which animals you see, when, and what they’re up to is as wild as the savanna itself. What can I expect from a safari in Africa?

A perfect safari day begins with a lovely early morning rise with African savannah sounds. After a strong, healthy breakfast, you head out in a safari vehicle with your personal driver. This is THE time to look for wildlife – since these early hours, and the last hours before sunset, are when animals are most active. You go on exploring the savannah until it’s time for lunch. Here you can opt to go back to the camp, or to have a picnic along the way. You go on exploring the wild until just before sunset, when you’ll stop for the famous safari sundowner. Watch the sunset while you nurse your favourite drink and reminisce the day. You arrive back in camp in time to freshen up. Then it’s dinner and off to bed early since around sunrise the next morning it all starts again.

What sort of hotel can I expect on a safari?

As a general rule you can say the higher your safari prices, the better your hotel. At the lower end, campsites are usually basic, sometimes crowded and not always in the best locations within the national parks or reserves. They are however well priced and often have ample facilities such as showers and toilets.

Lodges are the mainstays of the safari scene and the quality varies considerably – many lodges within the reserves and national parks have excellent locations but are ageing and in need of renovation, while others are luxurious and recently overhauled. In tented camps, including mobile camps, you’ll sleep in large, walk-in tents – they’re like lodge rooms in terms of size but with canvas for walls and floor. Canvas tents allow you to hear the sounds of the African night. Most lodge rooms and tents of this kind have comfortable (not camp) beds, sometimes a desk and usually a private bathroom; some even have an outdoor shower with no roof but walls that protect your modesty.

Vi skal vejlede, men du skal beslutte

Hos Safari Eksperten lægger vi vægt på, at de muligheder vi giver dig, bliver dem du ønsker, og ikke nødvendigvis dem vi personligt anser for at være rigtige. Du skal derfor gøre op med dig selv om forventningerne er lig med flot indkvartering, eller om den optimale atmosfære og placering i forhold til dyrenes færden på årstiden er vigtigere. Naturligvis koster 4-stjernet indkvartering mere end 2-stjernet, og højsæsonen i et land er ofte mærkbart dyrere end lavsæsonen. Også selv om safarioplevelserne godt kan være de samme. Måske kan der i lavsæsonen forekomme mere regn end normalt, men det er sjældent noget der for alvor har betydning for safarien.

I en gruppe eller få din egen safari?

Er man én til fire personer på safari i det østlige Afrika, er det normalt billigst at indgå i en gruppesafari med andre, enten med engelsk eller dansk rejseleder. Ved fem-seks deltagere i en bil er det oftest økonomisk samme prisleje som i en gruppe. Afgørende er det også, om man vil have sin tur helt for sig selv og sin familie eller venner. Det afgør kun du, og begge dele kan være lige gode. Husk dog, at en privat safari giver meget mere plads til individuelle ønsker for planlægning af ruten og forløbet af de enkelte dage under opholdet. I nogle lande, Sydafrika og Namibia specielt, er kør-selv-ferie billigt, nemt og oplagt, hvis man har lyst til en individuel rejse.

Hvor lang tid på safari?

Optimalt tilråder vi hellere få områder med en fornuftig mængde tid frem for stressende ruter med mange områder og megen transportkørsel på få dage. Vi ser også gerne, at du har mindst tre nætter i de bedste områder du kommer til. Det er også vigtigt, at du har tid til at nyde din safari. Hvor lang tid er så nok, afgøres af dine ønsker, din tid, økonomi og eventuelle tidligere safarierfaring.

Placeringen af lodgen/campen eller hotellet

Dette punkt er for os ofte afgørende. Vi vil ikke tilbyde dig indkvartering der giver gentagne lange transportkørsler mellem indkvartering og safariområderne, blot for at spare relativt få kroner på turen. En besparelse du helt sikkert vil fortryde. Vi vil optimalt set have dig til at bo i hjertet af de bedste oplevelser.

Skal der badeferie med?

Vores erfaring siger, at man ofte får en god afslutning på sin Afrika-rejse ved at slutte safarien af med et ophold ved Det Indiske Ocean. Mange vælger at dele ferien i to lige store dele – safari og efterfølgende kystophold. Du afgør den fordeling, men vi anbefaler normalt, at man har mindst fire nætter ved kysten, for at få glæde af opholdet og nå at slappe af. Det er vigtigt at huske, at en nat ved kysten normalt er markant billigere end en safari dag. Ofte fire til seks gange billigere. Den fordeling kan betyde meget for en samlet pris for en rejse.
