On our trip, we met a few other Americans. Told them about Nordic Visitor and they were impressed. I found Nordic Visitor's website very user-friendly. I love that all the documents sent was super easy to just hand the concierge and the 2 excursions we booked already had our names down. I loved the 2 excursions in the package we chose. Overall, it exceeded my expectations and I'm so glad I chose this particular trip.

It’s good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. If you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our booking terms and FAQs .

1. Which destinations can I explore with Nordic Visitor?

Nordic Visitor can plan your trip to the following countries in Europe:

  • •  Iceland
  • •  Scotland
  • •  Ireland
  • • The UK
  • •  Norway
  • • Switzerland
  • •  Sweden
  • •  Finland
  • •  Denmark
  • •  Greenland

We also offer Northern Europe packages in the following destinations:

  • •  Scandinavia – a group of countries, comprising Norway, Sweden and Denmark
  • • The Alps – visit Austria, Germany and Switzerland on an Alpine getaway
  • •  Lapland – a region spanning the northern reaches of Sweden and Finland
  • •  Svalbard – a remote Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic Circle

2. What is the difference between Scandinavia and the Nordics?

The term "Scandinavia" commonly refers to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. " Nordic countries " is used definitively for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. This also includes their associated territories of: Svalbard, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Åland Islands.

You may have guessed from our name that we originated as a Nordic travel agency. We now also specialise in Scotland and Ireland, two Celtic countries that are close to the Nordics.

3. Which Nordic country should I visit?

All of the Nordic countries are worth visiting at least once in your lifetime! Essentially, where to go in the Nordics depends on the sort of sights and experiences you’re looking for on your next getaway.

If it’s volcanoes and glaciers you seek, opt for a trip to Iceland. This island country will mesmerise you with its geysers, ice caves, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and so much more.

In Norway, the country with the longest coastline in Europe, you can expect a land of majestic mountains and fjords. Meanwhile, Denmark flaunts one of the world’s coolest capitals, Copenhagen, awash with cobblestone streets and first-class restaurants.

As for Sweden, you could soak up trendy cities, picturesque countryside and sandy beaches in the south of the country. Or head north during the winter months to experience the snow-laden scenery of Lapland, a region that Sweden shares with Finland.

For a Nordic aurora borealis tour , the top places to go are Iceland, Northern Norway, Lapland, and Svalbard. They are all located within or very close to the Arctic Circle, near the North Pole, where northern lights activity occurs. Here you have the best chances of witnessing this natural phenomenon in the Nordics.

Read this guide to the Nordic countries to help you choose where to visit.

4. How do you travel between Nordic countries?

As the Nordics are neighbouring countries, situated in Northern Europe, you can travel easily between them.

The Scandinavian nations, in particular, are very well connected with rail, road, sea and air links. You could drive, fly or take the train between Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and travel by ferry between the latter two countries. There’s also a Baltic cruise connection between Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Iceland, on the other hand, is located further away from the other Nordic nations. So if you want to explore Scandinavia and Iceland on a Nordic combination trip , the most convenient way to travel between them is by flying. The flight time from Bergen, Norway to Reykjavík, Iceland is 2 hours 15 minutes.

5. What is the best month to visit the Nordics?

The best month to explore the Nordics varies based on what you want to see and do. As these countries are located in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is from April to September, and winter is between October and March. Each season has its own appeal and reasons to visit.

For mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and green scenery, opt for a summer tour in the Nordics . This time of year is best for enjoying the outdoors and activities like hiking. Plus, if you travel to the northernmost parts of the Nordics, you’ll witness the midnight sun phenomenon.

The months of June, July and August are the most popular, as it’s when you get the best weather and summer holidays. April, May and September make up the “shoulder season”, and it’s an ideal time to travel in the Nordics if you’d prefer to be around fewer visitors.

A winter Nordic tour , on the other hand, offers different kinds of experiences. Think landscapes draped in frost, activities in the snow, and festive vibes. What’s more, as the night skies are darker for longer in winter, you have better chances of seeing the northern lights.

6. Who are Nordic Visitor’s travel experts?

Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Northern Europe, with offices in the capital cities of Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. Our travel experts are based in these countries and have extensively explored the regions they specialise in.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.

Find out more about Nordic Visitor and our passionate travel experts.

Or if you need to change your travel dates, we'll rearrange all your tour details in one place, so you have a hassle-free experience.

Read our Book With Confidence terms to find out how you can have peace of mind with risk-free, flexible booking.

If you do not have Cancellation Protection with us, normal booking terms apply and we recommend you check with your private travel insurance provider.

9. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?

At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you, based on your needs and requests.

When you arrange your trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book all parts of your tour separately. If you need to make changes to your itinerary, you have to do all the legwork yourself.

Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf, based on your needs and requests, so you can relax and look forward to your trip.

Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.

This means you can leave all the hassle of trip-planning to the experts, who are based in Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. They know our destinations inside out, so you can rely on them to incorporate the best sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

What’s more, you get access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Should you need any support, we are only a call away. And if you need to make changes to your itinerary for any reason, you can leave all of that to us as well.

10. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?

We understand the importance of having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring. To ensure you get the best experience, we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation for you.

The hotels and guesthouses we feature in our tours are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.

As we have regional offices across the destinations we specialise in, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.

11. Will Nordic Visitor customise my tour?

Yes, you can easily customise your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to make your itinerary more bespoke, don’t hesitate to speak to your dedicated travel consultant.

They will gladly tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests in mind, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or history. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.

If you’re travelling to Europe with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Europe , they’ll happily add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.

Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.

12. Can I choose the arrival date?

You can choose from a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season you are interested in. All of our tours are available to purchase online, so pick the best date for you from the availability calendar.

If your travel plans have changed and you want to amend your arrival date, contact your travel consultant to rearrange your booking.

13. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights?

Return flights to your destination are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.

14. When should I book my flight tickets?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Nordic Visitor packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you. So once you have all of the arrangements confirmed, you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

15. What should I pack for my trip?

During your time in Northern Europe, you’ll be discovering new cities, towns and countryside. And with time spent outdoors, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Here’s our recommended packing list for visiting Northern Europe:

World’s Happiest People

Denmark is a fairy tale land where its people are among the happiest on earth. Although small in size, Denmark offers big reasons to visit. It’s situated between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and has over 4,500 miles of dramatic coastline. Its capital city of Copenhagen is considered the “culinary front runner and ‘hot-spot’ food destination of Europe,” and holds culinary delights to match the magnificent coastal scenery.

Destination Must-See's

Denmark ms1

Architecture:

Denmark is an architectural treat unto itself with influences originating with the Vikings, but changing over the years with Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles influencing it as well. It wasn’t until the 1960s when Danish architects entered the world scene with Functionalism, which is what most of us envision when we think of Danish architecture today. The Danish are indeed world leaders in architecture and visitors have many treats in store for them.

Denmark ms2

Copenhagen:

Copenhagen was founded as a Viking fishing village in the 10th century. Since the 20th century, it has been a thriving city and has become a large metropolitan area. It offers everything you could wish for. Enjoy world-class museums and cuisine. Marvel at magnificent contemporary architecture and be romanced by fairy tale streets with brightly colored houses.

Denmark ms3

Fredericksborg Castle:

Built in the Dutch Renaissance style by King Christian IV in the 17th century, Frederiksborg Palace is situated north of Copenhagen. There you’ll find the Museum of National History which exhibits the history of Denmark through a large collection of portraits, historical paintings and modern art. It’s surrounded by an enchanting baroque style garden.

Denmark ms4

The Little Mermaid:

This bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen sits on a rock by the water at Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen. It depicts The Little Mermaid from the famous story by Hans Christian Andersen, but it’s more than just that. It’s a legendary symbol and landmark of Copenhagen that attracts over one million visitors each year.

In Denmark, bread is a very important part of the table. Usually, it’s a very dark heavy whole grain rye. This marvelous bread forms the basis for Smørrebrød which is a type of open sandwich. It can have just about anything on it at all, but traditional toppings are pickled herring, different varieties of cheeses, sliced cucumber, tomato and boiled eggs, just to name a few. Try as many combinations of toppings as you can and you may just find a new favorite food to make at home.

Denmark md2

Go shopping:

Copenhagen is a shopper’s paradise! Shops are grouped together by trade so if you’re looking for something in particular, you’ll have an easier time finding it. While on your quest for that perfect souvenir, you can’t avoid absorbing more of this wonderful city’s atmosphere.

Denmark md3

Underwater bridge:

The Øresund Bridge links Denmark and Sweden. Opened in the year 2000, the bridge lets thousands of cars and trains cross between the two countries each year. Just as you’d expect from Scandinavian architecture, this bridge is a marvelous piece of engineering that also serves as a tunnel and an artificial island. You can see it disappear under the water to let ships pass from your airplane window before landing in Copenhagen, but you can also see it from the city’s beaches.

Denmark md4

Attention adventure seekers! You haven’t seen Copenhagen until you’ve seen it from a kayak out on the clean, calm waters of the harbor. See if you can find one of Copenhagen’s least known works of art—a series of ghostly underwater statues called Agnete and the Merman.

Enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. The weather in Denmark can vary during the course of your trip and even during each day. It is recommended to dress in layers to adapt to changes in temperature.

Denmark e2

Partially due to geography, fish and seafood is one of the main staples of the local diet in Denmark. You will also find a wide variety of meats like pork and poultry as well as vegetables such as beets, potatoes, cucumbers, apples and more. Cured salmon is a favorite in Denmark.

Denmark e3

Denmark has a thriving design industry and shopping for unique things to bring home in Denmark is a lot of fun. Make sure there’s plenty of room in your suitcase.

A fantastic trip, very well organised

Most hotel choices were amazing. A fantastic trip, very well organised.

All of the family really enjoyed our trip to the Baltic Countries and Scandinavia

All of the family really enjoyed our trip to the Baltic Countries and Scandinavia; Tours to Europe took into account all of the usual highlights we wanted to visit as well as including the special family locations. The guides were knowledgeable and very helpful; all the hotels were in excellent locations and every time we had a meeting with a driver or guide they were there on time waiting for us. We had every document or ticket provided that we needed. Overall it was a wonderful and enjoyable experience.

We were a small group of 12 who all got on extremely well

We were a small group of 12 who all got on extremely well.  This added to the pleasure of our trip.  Another bonus was the record-breaking warm, sunny weather in Scandinavia which was gone for our final day in Helsinki.

Along the way you can visit the Lom Stave church , one of the largest and most beautiful stave churches in Norway.

Continue the drive through the magnificent Gudbransdalen valley, which is surrounded by several national parks like Rondane National Park, Breheimen and Reinheimen, before reaching Lillehammer in the afternoon.

For those with Swedish heritage, a stop at the  Dössberget Museum  in Bjursås, just outside  Falun , might be of interest. Even if you don’t have Swedish roots, the great view, atmosphere and lunch makes it well worth a visit. After lunch, continue west to Nusnäs and visit the Grannas  Dala Horse  Workshop. Here at this family-owned workshop from the 1920s you can see how this popular symbol of Sweden is made. You will end the day back in Stockholm.

Day 17: STOCKHOLM AND DEPARTURE DAY

Enjoy one last Scandinavian breakfast before checking out of your hotel. Tour Information

We recommend that all our travellers read through the following information about driving in Scandinavia, what the tour includes, accommodation and other useful information for your travels.

ABOUT OUR SELF-DRIVE TOURS This is a self-drive tour, which means you will follow a detailed and personalised itinerary during your road trip in Scandinavia. No dedicated driver or tour guide is included. All accommodation, rental vehicle, and other planned activities or added services will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor (as specified in the itinerary). As this is a self-drive tour, you are welcome to stop when and where you choose on your drive. Except for accommodation and booked activities, other highlights we’ve listed in the itinerary are suggestions based on Nordic Visitor favourites.

For inexperienced drivers who still want to explore and discover Scandinavia, we recommend one of our guided small group tours , where you travel with a local, experienced tour leader.

ACCOMMODATION Our team of local travel experts carefully select hotels around the country based on excellent ratings, personal experience and comfort. Please note, that in Scandinavia our room types are based on European standard sizes. For instance, a double bed often consists of two single beds pushed together. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra bed, a rollaway or a sofa bed, and a single room is often smaller than the standard double.

DFDS CRUISE The overnight cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo includes cabin accommodation (comfort or quality cabin with windows) with private facilities, car space and breakfast is included. There are two ships operating on the route, Pearl Seaways and Crown Seaways, and each ship can accommodate approximately 1.800 passengers. On board you find restaurants, bars and activities.

  • Departure from Copenhagen: 14:15
  • Arrival in Oslo: 09:15

DRIVING IN SCANDINAVIA For information on driving in Scandinavia we recommend that you take a look at our travel guide for driving in Norway. It is very similar for the rest of our Nordic countries. There you will find handy information on tolls, ferry routes, tunnels and more! In general, the roads in Scandinavia are of high standard and are well-maintained. Rural roads are generally two lanes and can be narrow and winding, particularly in mountainous areas. Scandinavians drive on the right side of the road.

PARKING IN THE CAPITALS OF SCANDINAVIA Parking and overnight parking at hotels (most hotels in small towns and the countryside have free parking) , fees for parking meters or parking garages, fines for parking violations or towing charges are not included in the package price. Parking fees in Scandinavia are typically between EUR 10 and EUR 50 per night, depending on the type of parking. We always recommend that you inquire about the best parking option when you check in at your hotels.

CURRENCY RATE All bookings are charged in Euros (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. Therefore, conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

AFTER BOOKING WITH NORDIC VISITOR After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days by one of our travel consultants, who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday. Your travel consultant will provide you with details about your booking and your remaining payment (if not paid in full). You will also receive more information about what to expect during your holiday.

CARBON OFFSETTING YOUR TOUR Nordic Visitor is working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours. Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

  • Scandinavia sees the most rainfall in July and August, while April and May are the driest months.

  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.

The Perfect Road Trip to Denmark and Sweden

best road trip in Denmark and Sweden

A few trips are as exciting and invigorating as a road trip to Scandinavia. The impressive landscapes, the idyllic villages, and the enchanting nature are just a few of the reasons that make such a trip unique. But a road trip through the whole of Scandinavia takes time. Only a few days are not enough to get to know this beautiful place in depth. That’s why a road trip to Denmark and Sweden is the ideal choice for anyone looking to experience Scandinavia in just a few days.

One week is enough for a Denmark and Sweden road trip! Not to see everything you want, but certainly, enough to get a good taste of these two beautiful Scandinavian countries. It mainly requires a passion for adventure, good planning, and some tips. So let’s get started!

Start_Your_Journey_Lifestyle_EN_v4_936x120

Things to prepare before your road trip to Denmark and Sweden

The ideal starting point for a road trip to Denmark and Sweden is Copenhagen. With that in mind, you’ll need to take care of the following:

Rent your car

There are numerous car rental companies in Copenhagen. All are reliable and surprisingly offer quite low prices. You can pick up the car of your choice, either from the airport or from the city center. The road network of Denmark and Sweden is among the best in Europe. Therefore, choose your rental car based on the number of people who will accompany you on your trip.

Pack your luggage

Do not overpack! Take only the essentials with you. You will definitely need some comfortable clothes for driving. Also, don’t forget to pack some warm clothes, even if you’re planning a summer road trip. One of the destinations is Swedish Lapland, where the temperature can drop to 0 degrees in the summer months!

Prepare some car-friendly activities

You will need to spend more than 50 hours in the car for a road trip to Denmark and Sweden. The view will compensate you, but there will definitely come times when you will feel tired or bored. So make sure you spend your time pleasantly and productively. Think of some games you can play in the car and download your favorite audiobooks.

Check the weather

The weather will not affect your route, but you will definitely need to check it before forming your program, in the beginning, and during the road trip. You can avoid some stops or choose others, depending on whether it’s raining or shining.

Your one-week road trip to Denmark and Sweden Itinerary

Based on our experience, the ideal road trip follows a circular route so you can enjoy the most out of Scandinavia in one week. Unfortunately, time is enough for just a taste of Denmark, but a much larger trip through Sweden.

Day One: Copenhagen

The first day of the road trip involves little to no driving! You can spend it exploring the capital of Denmark. Copenhagen is a relatively small city that you can walk around in a day.

There are many things to do in Copenhagen for free or at a small cost. You can drink your coffee in the most beautiful area of the city, Nyhavn. Then walk to Kastellet Park and see the famous statue of the Little Mermaid, next to the park. Then you can visit the magnificent Christiansborg Palace and the Copenhagen Cathedral .

There is enough time to visit the National Museum of Denmark or one of Copenhagen’s many free museums . You should definitely try the famous Danish pastries and have a drink in one of the picturesque bars of the city. But don’t stay up all night because the next day will be much more tiring!

road trip in Denmark

Day Two: Helsingør, Helsingborg, Sodertalje

The next morning, starting from Copenhagen and crossing the east coast of Denmark, you will reach Helsingør in less than an hour. You can spend a couple of hours exploring this cute little seaside town. The most popular tourist destination is Kronborg Castle , the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet!

From Helsingør, the ferry will take you to Helsingborg, Sweden, in less than 30 minutes! There are routes every 20 minutes, and you don’t need to book your ticket in advance. It’s a pleasant little trip with great views of the Danish and Swedish coasts. The price is €33 for the car and €12 for each adult.

sweden denmark tour

Helsingborg is a lovely small town, and it is perfect for a stop for lunch and sightseeing. Park your car in the free parking lot outside the port and spend a few hours seeing the Sofiero Palace and Gardens, the Kärnan Tower, and having a seaside lunch with a view. Everything is in the city center, so you won’t have to wander around for too long.

The rest of the day involves a lot of driving! You will need to drive for 5.5 hours to arrive in Sodertalje, a small quiet town, just outside Stockholm. The highway is safe and easy to drive on. So you can cover this part of your road trip when it gets dark. Choose one of the comfy hotels in Sodertalje to rest after a full and exhausting day.

road trip to Helsingborg

Day Three: Stockholm

After having breakfast in Sodertalje and admiring the city in the daylight, head to Stockholm. The journey will take approximately 20 minutes. Check into your hotel and then start exploring the capital of Sweden. Spend a leisurely day, with no driving at all, but with plenty of walking.

Stockholm is bigger than Copenhagen, but you can see its main attractions in one day. Start with a walk through the picturesque alleys of Gamla Stan (Old Town). Gamla Stan is the best-preserved medieval area in Scandinavia. Apart from its unique architecture, you will also love its cute little shops and traditional cafes.

Then visit the historical buildings in the city center next to Gamla Stan. The most important are the House of Nobility, the Royal Palace, and the Stockholm Cathedral. You can also choose one of Stockholm’s many free museums to visit. If you have some time, take the ferry and head to the small island of Djurgarden. Djurgarden is full of modern museums and amusement parks, including the Viking Museum of Stockholm .

Finally, don’t forget to try traditional Swedish food in one of Stockholm’s numerous quality restaurants. If you haven’t made a reservation, don’t be disappointed! In most restaurants in the city, you will find a table if you wait patiently in line for a while.

road trip in Stockholm

Day 4: From Uppsala to Lycksele (Swedish Lapland)

The 4th day of your road trip includes several hours of driving to Swedish Lapland. But this driving experience might be one of the most enjoyable you’ve had so far. Crossing the country’s northeastern side, you will encounter green meadows, beautiful beaches, dense forests, and clear blue lakes. You will have the opportunity to make many small stops to admire the landscapes you will find on your way. Start your journey as early as possible, so you can see as much as you can.

The first stop is Uppsala, a small town north of Stockholm, known for its university , which was founded in the 15th century. After driving for a few hours, you will leave the main highway and follow a route that combines green landscapes, picturesque towns, and countless small lakes. Make as many stops as you wish, either for food or to enjoy the scenery. There are plenty of places to park your car, even ready-made wooden facilities to sit and enjoy the view and rest from the journey.

Late at night, you will notice a change in scenery and temperature. You have just entered Swedish Lapland. The first town you come across is Lycksele, split in two by a large river. It is the ideal location to spend the night and rest from your long journey.

a stop during the road trip at Denmark and Sweden

Day 5: Northern Lights at Jokkmokk

Swedish Lapland consists of small towns and wonderful nature. We recommend as your next destination Jokkmokk, a scenic Swedish town that has been a meeting place for the Sami people for hundreds of years. The distance from Lyksele is approximately 3.5 hours by car, and the route offers views of the magnificent landscapes of Swedish Lapland.

In the area around Jokkmokk, you can find Sweden’s most beautiful national parks. Unfortunately, there is no car access to most of them. Except one! Stora Sjöfallet is the closest national park to Jokkmokk and is a perfect sample of Lapland’s unique natural environment. So, it will definitely be one of the highlights of your road trip through Sweden.

Finally, there is no better place to see the Northern Lights than Jokkmokk and the area surrounding it. The lake next to Jokkmokk is the perfect place to relax in the evening, and observe this magical natural phenomenon. There are benches, shelters, and even campfire stones, all free for visitors.

northern lights during road trip in Sweden

Day 6: From Jokkmokk to Västerås

Day 6 of your Denmark and Sweden road trip is mostly driving as the return journey begins. Wake up as early as possible and head to Lycksele and then to Västerås and the province of Västmanland. After leaving Lapland, you take a slightly different route from the one you came. It also includes beautiful landscapes and a dramatic change of scenery.

We suggest that after making the necessary short stops at whichever points appeal to you the most, you take a break in the small cute town of Västerås. Built on the shore of Lake Mälaren, Västerås is small enough to see it in a couple of hours and offers plenty of options for good Swedish food.

The province of Västmanland is a beautiful quiet rural area with awesome scenery and lovely traditional houses. There are many cheap options for staying in one of them. Therefore, we strongly recommend you choose one of these houses to spend the night and have a strong Swedish experience!

traditional Swedish house

Day 7: Malmö, Øresund Bridge, Copenhagen

The last day of your road trip begins with a 6-hour drive to Malmö, one of Sweden’s largest cities. You can go shopping in the city’s pedestrian shopping district and sit in the central square for a coffee or a meal. Malmö is 20 minutes from Copenhagen, so it’s the final destination of your exciting one-week road trip to Denmark and Sweden.

To reach the point from where you started, this time you will cross the famous Øresund Bridge. The Øresund Bridge is 16 km long and connects Denmark with Sweden. Crossing it is an experience that could not be missing from such a road trip. The cost of the tolls is 65 EUR for a regular car. Once you pass the bridge, you will be 5 minutes from the airport and the center of Copenhagen.

Some useful tips

If you don’t have much experience with demanding road trips, or if you are visiting these 2 Scandinavian countries for the first time, you will definitely face some challenges. So here are some tips to perfectly organize your road trip in Denmark and Sweden:

  • Drivers : You will need to drive an average of 6-8 hours daily. Therefore, it will make your life a lot easier if you split the driving time between two drivers instead of one.
  • Cost : Apart from the Øresund Bridge, you won’t have to pay for tolls anywhere else in Denmark and Sweden. Your largest expense will be fuel. So lighten your expenses considerably by renting a diesel car.
  • Parking : You will have no issues finding where to park in rural areas and small towns. However, you will need to familiarize yourself with the automated parking system in larger cities such as Stockholm and Copenhagen.
  • Closing hours : Danes and Swedes go to bed early! So make sure you plan your food stops and your arrival at your destinations before 9 pm. Also, always check the times you can check in at your hotel.
  • Google Maps : The Google Maps app is the perfect tool to find any destination in Scandinavia and arrange your arrival time. Make sure you have enough data on your mobile phone. For any long driving distance, add at least 20-30% extra time, because of the stops you will take.

That’s great info. Can you tell me if there are any apps or good websites for finding accommodation in country town and rural areas. Thank you Jenny

To put it very simply: our thing is Scandinavia, the Nordics. It is what we love, what we know best, what we do. Every day. We ignore travel industry fads and focus exclusively on what we understand well: Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. We know our clients very well and we know what they want.

Our team is a collection of hand-picked professionals; hard-working smart people with a single mission: providing travelers with the most unique, relaxed and exciting Nordic vacation packages possible while creating tremendous value for them. We focus on value with all our Scandinavia tours, not cost (how is this for transparency?). So, our goal is simple: if you travel with us, you will come home feeling like you received much more – from the experience – than you paid for it. That is value!

We aim for perfection with every single client. Why settle for anything else?
