The new AMG EXPERIENCE programme: Exclusive racetrack experiences and brand events

Press Release

March 3, 2023 – Affalterbach

Interested customers and fans of the performance and sports car brand Mercedes‑AMG have the opportunity from April to October 2023 to hone their driving skills through the AMG RACETRACK EXPERIENCE and AMG LIFESTYLE EXPERIENCE. With professional instructors, participants experience the driving dynamics and performance of the latest Mercedes-AMG models for themselves. On renowned racetracks and serpentine roads they will master the safe and skilful handling of these high-performance cars and learn about the technology that powers them.

From Tuscany and South Tyrol to renowned Formula 1™ courses or a trip back in time to explore the heritage of the Mercedes-AMG brand – all events include spectacular drives, culinary highlights and unforgettable thrills. A professional photographer will capture lasting memories for everyone.

Driver training for novices and experts

The RACETRACK EXPERIENCE covers all levels of expertise and difficulty from curious beginners and experienced drivers to seasoned experts. Venues include the Mercedes-Benz Testing and Technology Centre in Immendingen, which is normally closed to the public. Events will also take place on the racetracks in Estoril, Portugal, and Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium as well as the driving safety centre, Grand Prix track and north loop of the legendary NĂŒrburgring in Germany.

The basic event is the half-day DISCOVER programme, where the focus is on safe driving techniques and getting to know the Mercedes-AMG models. In the subsequent PERFORMANCE and ADVANCED courses, the drivers take to the road to expand their skills and learn how the physics of driving feels in practice. They also gain in-depth knowledge on the handling of high-performance cars and the use of Mercedes-AMG driver assistance systems in challenging situations.

To be eligible for the PRO level, drivers must have previously completed AMG ADVANCED training or a comparable programme. The MASTER training level, with GT2, GT3 or GT 4 racing cars similar to the Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing, is ideal for drivers with track day ambitions. Through intensive experiences in the driver’s seat, followed by individual feedback from such seasoned competitors as Maro Engel, Bernd MaylĂ€nder and Maximilian Götz, both on and off the training site, participants test the limits of their driving skills. The culmination of the MASTERS program is a two-day training course on the NĂŒrburgring north loop or the “Ardenne toboggan” at Spa Francorchamps.

Enjoyable discovery tours immersed in the AMG brand

Programmes under the LIFESTYLE EXPERIENCE label range from discovery tours in Croatia, South Tyrol or Tuscany to a trip to a Formula 1™ race. The SPIRIT OF AFFALTERBACH programme offers a behind-the-scenes look at the world of the Mercedes-AMG high-performance luxury brand.

In the AMG SUMMER BREEZE programme participants embark on a half-day excursion to learn how to handle the latest Mercedes-AMG models for maximum driving pleasure. The event starts at the Wald- und Schlosshotel Friedrichsruhe, a historic hunting lodge that is now one of Germany’s leading five-star hotels. With professional instructors, the drivers explore the picturesque winding roads of the Hohenlohe region.

Experience the SPIRIT OF AFFALTERBACH

The SPIRIT OF AFFALTERBACH is a half-day or full-day experience in which drivers are fully immersed in the world of the Mercedes-AMG brand. In the plant’s own engine works, they get an up‑close look at how the “one man, one engine” philosophy is brought to life. On the guided drive through the unforgettable scenery of the Affalterbach countryside, professional instructors will show how to get the most out of the driving programs to achieve the perfect balance between performance and comfort. The SPIRIT OF AFFALTERBACH CLASSIC EDITION is dedicated to the history of Mercedes-AMG. On this journey, participating drivers take the wheel of legendary classic cars and current models to explore milestones in the history of the brand.

Unforgettable journeys through Europe’s most scenic regions

The five-day AMG EXPLORER CROATIA programme features culinary delights in picturesque towns and spectacular drives through winding mountain passes and on breathtaking coastal roads along the Adriatic Sea. With luxury accommodation and exciting daily activities, this trip leaves nothing to be desired.

The event AMG EXPLORER SOUTH TYROL features five days of Alpine panoramas, excellent cuisine, culture and automotive performance at the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG on scenic routes in the mountains of South Tyrol. In the six-day AMG GRAND EXPLORER TOSCANA programme, everyday routine vanishes in the rear-view mirror. The trip across Tuscany takes in green vistas of cypresses and olive trees, vineyards and vibrant cities. In a luxury hotel the participants savour gourmet Mediterranean cuisine and Tuscan specialities. This spectacular driving experience showcases some of the most beautiful regions of Italy.

Glamour, adrenaline and thrills: the AMG GRAND EXPLORER F1 programme offers backstage access to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1™ team at the Hungarian Grand Prix on the Hungaroring track. Participants broaden their horizons with a pit lane walk, live interviews and an exciting accompanying programme, complemented by breathtaking cross-country drives.

Instructors are top racing drivers and AMG brand ambassadors

At selected AMG EXPERIENCE events, successful racing drivers and brand ambassadors are on hand as instructors. Maro Engel, Maximilian Götz, Bernd Schneider, Karl Wendlinger and Bernd MaylÀnder are much in demand as experts on all aspects of professional driving.

Maro Engel was runner-up in the British Formula 3 Championship in 2007. He competed in the DTM and, with his numerous victories, including the GT World Cup in Macau and the 24-hour race at the NĂŒrburgring, is one of the world’s top GT3 drivers. His record-setting drive around the NĂŒrburgring North Loop with the Mercedes-AMG ONE stands as the fastest-ever lap of that course with a street-legal production car. Maximilian Götz is also a highly successful GT3 driver: he topped the ADAC GT Masters table in 2012, won the Blancpain Sprint Series in 2014 and was DTM champion in 2021.

With his record five titles in the internationally renowned DTM series, Bernd Schneider’s nickname “Mr. DTM” is well-earned. In 2013 he won both the Dubai 24 Hours and the NĂŒrburgring 24 Hours in an SLS AMG GT3. The Austrian driver Karl Wendlinger was active in Formula 1™ from 1991 to 1995 and was a DTM driver from 2002 to 2003. He has been a brand ambassador for Mercedes-AMG since 2012. Bernd MaylĂ€nder has been the driver of the Official FIA F1 Safety CarÂź since 2000. In that year he took the chequered flag at the NĂŒrburgring 24 Hours. He drove a Mercedes-Benz CLK for the Manthey Racing Team in the DTM in 2001 and 2002 and won the final race on the Hockenheimring track in the 2001 season.

The fleet: The full range of Mercedes-AMG cars

The AMG EXPERIENCE fleet includes all drive technologies, vehicle classes and body types. They range from conventional V8 models, performance hybrids and battery-electric vehicles through to thoroughbred racing cars similar to the Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing Programme. Depending on the event type and option package, one or two of each vehicle may be provided.

About the AMG EXPERIENCE

The AMG EXPERIENCE offers exclusive driving experiences and training in Germany and Europe. The AMG LIFESTYLE tours let drivers experience the AMG driving sensation for themselves on carefully selected routes. Participants are accommodated in exclusive hotels and treated to gourmet cuisine. In the AMG RACETRACK training events, they hone their driving skills on the racetrack under the guidance of professional instructors from the motorsport world. Overtaking the future

Mercedes-AMG ONE

Driving sensation

An experience at the limit.

Incredible performance, brought directly to the road. The Mercedes-AMG ONE is sports driving in its purest form. With an acceleration of 0-200 km/h in 7.0 seconds or 0-300 km/h in 15.6 seconds, this hypercar sets the direction: the electronically regulated maximum speed of 352 km/h. Breathtaking figures that are made even more powerful thanks to driver programmes for the racetrack drawn from Formula 1. In the Strat 2 programme, the active aerodynamics, the tighter chassis tuning, the lowering of the vehicle and the full performance of all its motors all operate just as in the Formula 1 qualifying. There’s never been anything like it. But now it will always be there.

Performance from another planet

The dream of bringing Formula 1 technology directly to the road has come true. With this premium-class E PERFORMANCE plug-in hybrid, a 1.6-litre V6 turbo petrol engine and four electric motors for the turbocharger, crankshaft and front axle act together to deliver an impressive 1063 hp system performance. Combined with the powerful, directly cooled 800-volt battery developed exclusively by High Performance Powertrains, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 engine builder, the foundation is laid for exceptionally agile, high-precision, intensive driving at the limit. On the track. And the road.

Mercedes-AMG ONE

Chassis and gearbox

Performance drawn from power.

From unbridled power come formidable driving experiences – thanks to the super-strong, lightweight Formula 1 carbon monocoque construction in which the powerful engine and exceptional gearbox are directly integrated and that provides the exact basis for the chassis. The newly-developed, automated 7-speed manual transmission with its 4-disc carbon racing clutch is perfectly matched to this high-performance Formula 1 hybrid – and can perfectly translate the maximum speed of the combustion engine of 11,000 rpm in order to always draw maximum power. Additionally, the sporty, innovative multi-link aluminium chassis with transverse push-rod suspension struts highlights the no-compromise design of the ONE. The arrangement of this unit makes an anti-roll bar obsolete and effectively reduces rolling movements, even during very fast changes of direction. A unique composition of technology that enables whatever the race track and the street allow.

Mercedes-AMG ONE

Unmistakably exceptional

An experience like on the home straights at Silverstone or in the hairpin by the Grand Hotel in Monte Carlo – the unique sound of the Mercedes-AMG ONE delivers a true race feeling. Wherever this hypercar is actually showing its prowess, one can already hear beforehand that true Formula 1 technology is approaching. Goosebumps guaranteed. For driver, pedestrians and fans.

Aerodynamics

Optimised down to the last detail.

Journeys with speeds over 300 km/h, extreme acceleration out of curves, and always perfect road holding. Only if you understand the limits of physics can you master them. The best demonstration of this is the spectacular aerodynamics of the ONE that seeks a unique balance between maximum drive and actively optimised aerodynamics for greater contact pressure. To achieve this, moveable slats were developed for the front wheelhouses, along with a two-part extendable rear wing and active flaps on the front diffuser, which can be adjusted to suit the driver’s wishes and chosen driving programme for optimal racing conditions. The iconic longitudinal fin, the aerodynamically optimised 10-spoke wheel in forged aluminium and the NACA openings for cooling channels are also real boosters on the way towards the best possible performance in high-speed trips.

A formidable performance

Not only in its performance but also in its lines, the Formula 1 provenance of the ONE can be clearly seen. The air inlet on the roof that transitions elegantly into the vertical shark fin, the exhaust tailpipe with its large round outlet and two other, smaller openings and the unique lacquering all come direct from the premium class. But this is not an end in itself; each nuance of the muscular look of the ONE forms a part of the overall idea: to optimise the overall performance of the vehicle. For maximum driving pleasure with maximum performance.

Mercedes-AMG ONE

Reduced to the maximum

Interieur of the Mercedes-AMG ONE

When drivers become pilots

Performance sets the tone even in the interior. Here is everything that the driver and his passenger need in order to enjoy the fascination of the ONE in total – and nothing that could distract them. The AMG Motorsport bucket seats, integrated into the carbon monocoque, offer optimal support, the Formula 1-style steering wheel with knobs for driving programmes give perfect handling and the displays for the correct overview – so that every curve can be taken perfectly.

Behind the Curtain: This Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Factory Tour is a Racing Fan Must-Do

Lewis Hamilton is a happy man. It’s the Tuesday after Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport clinched the 2018 Formula One World Constructors’ Championship, and he’s meeting a group of 10 Marriott Bonvoy members at the team’s base in Brackley, England — part of an exclusive experience offered to members through Marriott Moments .

First, he poses for pictures with each guest (“Who stole whose style, you or him?” he asks one young man who’s dressed in the same blue jacket as his father) and then takes questions (What does he like to eat in the off-season? “Pancakes with syrup!”).

It’s the perfect finale to a unique day for these Bonvoy members. Having been present at the Constructors’ Championship celebrations, they’ve also had a tour of the factory, an extremely rare treat and an unparalleled insight into what the team calls “the Human Engine,” the engineering talent that keeps them at the top. This team has won the World Constructors’ Championship for five years running.

The tour starts in the reception of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Operations Centre, one of six buildings on this sprawling site. The room is dominated by Hamilton’s title-winning car from 2017; it’ll soon be replaced by his equally successful 2018 vehicle. Along one wall are trophies won this season by the “Silver Arrows,” from the marvelous Gorilla-with-tire trophy awarded at the French Grand Prix to the more conventionally styled World Constructors’ Championship trophy.

A door at the back of the reception area leads into the factory where, with the exception of the engine (which is made in Brixworth, England), the car is assembled. The innovations developed here are jealously guarded, so all visitors are given a sticker to cover the camera lens on their phones. It’s a clean but not clinical place, a busy place, a place of serious work, with thousands of man-hours devoted to making every car.

f1

The first destination is the machine shop. A member of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s marketing team explains that all of the car’s metal elements are worked from a single piece, not welded, as she stands in front of a display of parts made especially for the team’s F1 cars. In the adjacent room, 5-Axis CNC mills are humming with energy as they produce the dizzying variety of metal components needed by these high-tech vehicles.

The team’s Head of Build Peter Hodgkinson, a genial New Zealander in a white lab coat, stops to chat as he walks through the machine shop. “What do you think? Pretty good, isn’t it?” he asks, gesturing toward the mills. Nearby, one of his workmates is assiduously checking and cataloging a variety of different metal components.

There is an atmosphere of total commitment: Work goes on here seven days a week. More than 800 employees strive to ensure Mercedes stays on top, and they certainly appear to relish it. “Every day when I come to work, I get to walk in past four F1 cars,” adds Hodgkinson. “That’s better than a normal job, isn’t it?”

Across the main corridor from the machine shop is the room where components are fatigue-tested to ensure they won’t fail in a race. There’s a model car (with an orange rubber model in the driver’s seat) in a simulation bay. It’s possible to simulate the impact of 30 kilometers [18.6 miles] from the worst bit of the worst F1 track here in 30 seconds, allowing the team to be sure every component is not going to fail.

f1

A few meters along the corridor is where the car’s carbon-fiber elements are produced. Eighty percent of the Mercedes F1 car’s mass is carbon-fiber, including the bodywork and suspension. A display demonstrates how a piece of front wing — crucial to the car’s aerodynamics — makes it from concept to reality. As much as three quarters of a car can be replaced during the season, which can improve performance by up to two seconds a lap.

At the heart of this compact factory are the race bays. This is where cars come back after each European race to be worked on; outside Europe, they travel from race to race, as there isn’t enough time for them to be brought back. They’re absent today, en route from Brazil to Abu Dhabi for the final race of the season. In the run-up to the season beginning in March, this part of the factory is a hive of activity.

Success here relies on the philosophy that Hodgkinson had outlined earlier: “Every day I get out of bed with the aim of being 10 percent better,” he says. “Imagine the impact when everyone does that.” The technology found at Brackley is impressive — but as this fascinating tour demonstrates, it’s the “Human Engine” that really drives Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport forward.

New 1-of-100 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Golden Coast Edition Revealed

Exklusive Edition fĂŒr den Performance Roadster: Mercedes AMG SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Golden Coast Exclusive edition of the performance roadster: Mercedes AMG SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Golden Coast

Mercedes-AMG goes for gold with its latest exclusive creation.

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 is one of the historic luxury brand’s greatest open-top performance machines. It sports a 577-horsepower 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, all-wheel drive, and the ability to go from 0 to 60 in just 3.5 seconds. However, it combines its excellent performance with excellent personalization and luxury, and the latest exclusive special edition of the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 is a heightened demonstration of that luxury prowesss.

It’s called the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Golden Coast, and its luxurious, exclusive configuration prominently features the color it’s named after: gold. The exterior is finished in MANUFAKTUR Kalahari Gold Magno, paired with matching interior trim. The bright gold contrasts with black accents, including black brake calipers, the AMG Night Package Exterior, AMG Night Package Exterior II, and AMG Aerodynamic Package, and an interior upholstered black Nappa leather.

An exclusive ‘MANUFAKTUR Golden Coast’ edition badge sits atop the center console, distinguishing the exclusive special edition, of which only 100 examples are set to be made. With a beautiful configuration that highlights the beautiful color of gold, the new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Golden Coast is an exclusive masterpiece of performance, luxury, and design.

Mercedes-AMG E53 review: AMG’s plug-in hybrid E-Class comes over all sensible

Mercedes E53 AMG Estate

SPEC HIGHLIGHTS

I’m lost with amg at the moment. what is an e53 these days.

Great question. To give it its full name, this is the Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ and it’s currently the most powerful E-Class  you can buy. It gets a 3.0-litre straight-six and a nine-speed automatic gearbox with a permanently excited electric motor sandwiched in between.

There’s also a fairly sizeable 28.6kWh (21.22kWh usable so that some contingency is always left over for max performance) battery under the boot floor that provides up to 59 miles of all-electric range and can be recharged at 60kW, so it’s a very different plug-in hybrid setup to the four-cylinder C63 . The E53’s numbers are impressive though, with a total of 577bhp (or a maximum of 604bhp if you spec the AMG Performance Package and engage the ‘Race Start’ launch control) and 553lb ft of torque.

The nerdiest among us will remember the previous generation E63 S also made 604bhp. Progress.

And yet, that old E63 used AMG’s magical twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. Merc boss Ola KĂ€llenius has gone on record to say that there won’t be a V8 of any sort in this generation of E-Class, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a six-cylinder E63 with even more electrical assistance.

So, what else makes this an AMG?

Apart from the ludicrous power figure, the E53 gets a stiffer body shell thanks to extra strut braces and adaptive suspension with coil springs and two-valve adjustable dampers. There’s also rear-wheel steering on the saloon (you can’t have it if you want the estate), AMG-spec brakes and the aforementioned AMG Performance Package that ups the top speed to 168mph and adds even bigger brakes, a limited slip differential on the rear axle and dynamic engine mounts.

Let’s talk looks.

It’s every bit the modern AMG in the aesthetics department. The E53 gets aggressive front and rear bumpers, muscly arches, big wheels and a quad-exit exhaust. It also gets those rather tacky looking three-pointed star rear lights, light-up door handles and an illuminated front grille surround. Eugh.

Mercedes-AMG E53

Given this is an AMG, is it still bonkers to drive?

It’s worth remembering that this is  only an E53 rather than an E63, but after a European drive on Autobahns and twisty alpine passes, our first thoughts were that... it wasn’t all that exciting.

Of course, with 577bhp on tap and an electric motor to fill in the torque gaps, it’s hugely fast. The saloon will do 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and the estate is only a tenth slower, but there isn’t a huge amount of drama as you accelerate with a slightly muted straight-six soundtrack and the power sent to all four wheels.

It’s completely competent and a technical tour de force . It’s remarkably quiet at a cruise. The brake pedal has more feel than in other Mercedes products and seems to blend regen with actual friction rather successfully. The steering is direct if a little too quick. The rear-wheel steer manages to mask some of the 2.4-tonne kerbweight (the saloon is 2,390kg and the estate 2,435kg) and the suspension setup deals with bumps in the road without being too firm or too floaty. The all-electric range is also useful and you can use the steering wheel paddles to control three levels of regen while in Electric mode.

We didn’t love it. The nine-speed auto gearbox goes about its job quickly and quietly in auto mode but try to change down using the paddles and you could hard boil an egg in the time it takes to provide a lower gear. Not particularly sporty.

The piped-in engine noise is also painfully over-the-top, particularly in all out Sport+ mode, and not including a limited slip diff as standard on a 600 horsepower saloon seems harsh. The four-wheel drive system can send almost 100 per cent of the power to the rear axle, so perhaps there would be some fun to be had on track, but in its standard road-going modes the E53 doesn’t provide a huge amount of excitement.

It feels a little like a very fast version of the E300e rather than a proper AMG sports saloon, and even that’s a car we’re not completely sold on.

Why’s that? Is it something to do with the interior?

Got it in one. The interior of this sixth-gen E-Class is hugely complex, chock full of tech and just a little bit cheap in its feel. The E53 gets a 14.4in central touchscreen and a 12.3in digital dial display as standard, and you can have an additional 12.3in display on the passenger side with the optional Superscreen. All screens are bright and responsive, but they’re also drowning in menus and submenus, while the haptic controls on the steering wheel are distracting to use while driving. The whole interior is also lit up like a German techno club, and you even get something called ‘active ambient lighting’ on higher trim levels.

What are the different trim levels?

Entry level is the Premium trim. That brings 20in wheels, a panoramic roof, a Burmester 4D surround sound system, an augmented reality navigation system, sports seats and ash wood trim with black nappa leather seats. Prices start at £90,860 for the saloon and £93,110 for the estate.

Above that is the snappily named Night Edition Premium Plus trim. That still costs just under £100k and brings different 20in wheels, darkened exterior styling, massaging front seats, THERMOTRONIC four-zone climate control (great name) and plenty of carbon fibre interior trim.

At the top of the tree there’s the Edition 1. That’ll set you back £115,860 for a saloon and £118,110 for a dog-carrier, but it does include the AMG Performance Package which is otherwise a £7,495 option. It also brings 21in wheels, a carbon fibre boot spoiler on the saloon, carbon exterior mirrors and an AMG sticker package. Inside it adds yellow seat belts and stitching, racier performance seats and the Superscreen display as standard.

Should I buy one?

Consider this first. An Audi RS6 Avant Performance is currently £112,045, meaning it’s cheaper and yet still far more exciting than the top spec E53. A BMW M3 Touring starts at £87,945, meaning it’s a good chunk cheaper than the entry level E53 and also a much more engaging car. Oh, and despite historically being a size below the E-Class, if you compare E53 estate with M3 Touring, the M3 actually offers more boot space (500 litres in the BMW plays 460 litres in the plug-in Merc). Also worth noting that when we ran an xDrive M3 saloon for six months we averaged around 27mpg. On a long run in the PHEV E53 with 16 per cent of the journey done on all-electric power, will still only saw a total of 25.9mpg.

If you’re looking for a fast and comfortable cruiser that offers excellent tax breaks, decent EV range and a mind-boggling amount of tech then the E53 is an impressive bit of engineering, but it’s far from the most exciting product that AMG has ever turned out.
