How to Reach

Ratnagiri on the lovely Konkan coast has easy accessibility by air, road or rail. The Konkan railway that passes through some of the most beautiful rail routes is probably one of the best ways to reach the beach town.

The nearest airport is the newly launched domestic airport at Ratnagiri that connects flights to certain cities in Maharashtra . You could also book a domestic flight to Kolhapur and travel by road to Ratnagiri. The nearest International airport is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Mumbai .

You get ample choices of the finest seafood including spicy Malvan Chicken curries, Bangda, surmai ambat, masala pomphret or fried prawns. Malvani cuisines of sea food cooked with coconut gravy and spices are a must try. Winter evenings are a good time of the day to finish off a hectic sightseeing trip with delicious hot vada pav, Ratnagiri’s own special ragda cones, crisp cones filled with veggies and spiced chutneys and finish off with a customary appetizer called solkadhi.

Some of the good vegetarian dishes you could try are thalipeeth, loni dosas, thandai peetha bhakri or puris with aamras. Some of the best traditional desserts you could have are ukdiche modak, puran poli or fruitkhand.

Some of the edible stuff you can shop for are mangoes, jackfruit, cashews, kokum and a variety of spices. Ambapoli and phanaspoli, dried and preserved slabs of mangoes and jackfruit and kokum sherbet are must buys. Handicrafts and trinkets made of seas shells are some of the best buys round the Konkan region. And you would find plenty of beachside shacks selling wall hangings, lamps or key chains made of conches and sea shells. Exquisitely crafted clay figurines of Ganapati are a special buy of Ratnagiri.

You could visit the Prachin Konkan Museum that’s about 2 km from the Ganpatipule temple. The museum is a treat to the eyes, what with its well-manicured gardens of flowering trees and lifelike sculptures depicting the history and culture of Konkan. 1. visit the ratnadurg fort.

Surrounded by Arabian sea on three sides, Ratnadurg fort is a structure in a form of horseshoe as wide as 1000 meters and as long as 1300 meters. It is spread over 120 acres and was once a strong hold of the Maratha empire later to be occupied by Mughals.

2. Gateway of Ratnagiri

It is a structure with a slopped roof in the Ratnagiri jetty with Mandavi beach. The beach itself is a treat to eyes. The slope is a defense artwork build by Pratinidhi Dhondu Bhaskar, according to a popular belief.

3. Mandavi Beach

Most crowded beach of Ratnagiri with a panoramic view of Ratnadurg fort in the west and Arabian sea to the south. It has a vast line of seashore upto Rajiwanda port.

4. Thibaw Point

Situated at the hem of the hill, the Thibaw point has a Thibaw palace built as the exile of the king of Burma(Myanmar). It provides a picturesque view of the sunset at Arabian sea and is a centre of attraction for picnickers.

5. Jaigad Lighthouse

The Jaigad Lighthouse is situated in one of the bastion on the western edge of the Jaigad Fort. This impressive lighthouse offers breathtaking panoramic view of the area as it is situated on top of a hill.

6. Swayambhu Ganpati Temple

A 400-year-old Ganesha temple, Swayambhu is built of pule which is nothing but white sand and is believed to be a self-created monolith of Lord Ganesha, allegedly discovered 1600 years ago. The temple attracts a lot of visitors especially during the Hindu festival of Diwali which typically falls in the month of October or November.

20 km away from the town of Ratnagiri is Pawas, a place where Swarupanand Swami took his samadhi. Affectionately known as "Appa" or "Rambhau", Swami's original name was Ramchandra. Born on 15th December 1903, Swami undertook self-immolation at Pawas and also resided here for for 40 years before that.

Jaigad Fort, also known as the Fort of Victory, is a 16th-century fort that extends over an area of 13 acres in the coastal region of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. Located near Jaigad Village and approximately 20 kms to the north-west of Ganpatipule, the remains of the fort stand steady on a cliff overlooking the Jaigad creek where River Shastri enters the vast and mesmerising Arabian Sea.

The Swami Swaroopanand Samadhi Math is a religious and spacious temple. This religious place houses the Samadhi of Guru Swariipananda. Description.

Located just 2 km away from Ratnagiri, Ratnadurg is a famous tourist attraction. Because of the Bhagwati temple inside the fort, it is also called as Bhagwati fort. The fort is built in the Bahamani period. In 1670, Shivaji Maharaj won the fort from Adil Shaha of Bijapur. After Shivaji Maharaj, the East India Company took over the fort & the British ruled it till 1947. It is a moderate size fort with an area of more than 120acres. It is considered one of the strong forts on the western shore. Its strategic position is best to keep watch on the Arabian Sea and the Ratnagiri harbor The fort is in three parts, one is the Upper fort or Balekilla, the middle part is called the Peth fort and the third part is the Parkot which now houses the Lighthouse. Peth fort is in ruins. A tunnel joins the Peth fort and the Balekilla. The fortification consists of many bastions some of which are named Ganesh, Markya, and so on. A beautiful temple of Devi Bhagwati is built in the fort. A Lord Hanuman temple is also built in the fort
