THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE

Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.

Destination Must-Sees

Greece Must see takeover

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B. Step into history when you walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium or witness amazing sculptures at the museum.

paris europe mustsees

France’s romantic capital is a must-see destination, and a gorgeous gateway to the wonders the rest of this country has to offer. Whether your ideal Parisian getaway has you spending some free time sipping coffee at a café and watching the bustling city life, roaming the halls of art at the Louvre, or exploring the bohemian artist’s haven — the Montmartre neighborhood, there’s rich history and culture abound in every corner of the City of Light.

Europe ms1

Irish countryside:

Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.

Europe ms2

Ancient cities of Italy:

Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.

Destination Must-Dos

Greece Must dos takeoverv2

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Palace of Versailles France2022

The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Europe md2

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Spain md4

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Magnificent landscapes combined with the country’s charming traditions and customs offer new experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Famous for bullfighting, Spain allows you to grab life by the horns and dive into adventure. Whether it’s the eye-catching architecture of Madrid, the bold Spanish wines, or the shimmering Costa del Sol, this country remains a delight to the senses. Once you experience Spain, you’ll never want to leave and when you do, you’ll always be craving more.

Whether it’s old-world traditions and wonderful culture, cuisine, history, fashion or natural beauty, Italy is special to many people for different reasons. Few other countries boast so many legendary cities. There are also many charming hill towns and coastal villages that showcase Italy’s amazing natural beauty. From the big cities to the small towns, there is always something exciting to see in Italy. With so many reasons to visit, the rest is up to you!

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.

A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.

Switzerland

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Listen for the music of the great classical composers. Seek out grand capitals and wide boulevards. Austria travel takes you to fairytale landscapes and glorious castles. You are in Austria, a country that brings together a distinct culture with a diverse landscape.

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

European Tours

Europe tours: urban and rural, ancient and modern, ordinary and extraordinary.

In terms of pure convenience, no continent can touch Europe’s diversity. With so many countries, cultures, languages, and varieties of cuisine packed into such a comparatively tiny place, you can spend a week in Europe and experience something wildly different every day. All that variety can be overwhelming, but the secret to getting the most out of Europe is to take it slow. The Old World has stood for centuries, and it’ll all still be here when you’re ready to come back (which, of course, you’ll want to do immediately after getting home.)

Luke is the best tour manager I've ever met. I want to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible experience he provided to us. He is always full of energy, passion, enthusiasm and savviness. In our big tour group, every one from youth to senior age people appreciated the work that he did. I thank him for his interesting stories, funny jokes, unlimited help, it all made our journey truly memorable, making our vacation all the more fascinating. If we had another 100 holidays planned, we would want Luke every single one.
Luke is a tourist’s dream. His knowledge and passion for the places we visited and his talent for storytelling made the history come alive. We learned and laughed a lot along the way. I truly hope to join another tour that he leads sometime in the future!

The trip was really well organised, a good amount of time in each place, and good locations to stay to ne central to the main things to do. Ri had amazing suggestions and knowledge about the areas. She also found interesting cultural events we wouldn’t have known about for us to get involved in!
It was unforgettable tour in my life

Nothing to say about
We had a wonderful time on this 9 day tour of Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Slovenia. The itinerary was awesome and great, as there were many stops to most of the best highlight locations in all 3 countries. We had such a fantastic time on this tour due in part to the three wonderful leaders, those being Matija (our bus driver), Katsue (the guide for the Japanese group), and the incomparable Johanna, our English & Spanish guide. There was so much to see in these three wonderful countries, and Johanna and team had everything organized so so well.

I didn't get to finish my comment that the hotel in Athens did not have any rooms with two beds in it. Not everyone who travels together is a couple. I was traveling with my sister and we haven't shared a bed since I was eight years old. We made it work, but we weren't too happy about it.
Our trip gave us a great sampling of Athens and two islands, Mykonos and Santorini. However, those two islands are very touristy, and if I ever went back, I would probably visit islands that were not so filled with tourists. We had excellent connections every time we were supposed to be picked up by a Car Service. And each tour guide was knowledgeable and very interesting. The one tour that was a little long was the one that began with climbing a volcano in the early afternoon, and ending later that evening to see the sunset from Oia. Every hotel that we were in was very nice.. My one small complaint was that I requested two beds for each hotel we were in.

Giovanni was such a fantastic guide. Got to see the highlights of Sorrento, Capri and Amalfi in a very easy way with an amazing group of people. Highly recommend.
This was the perfect blend of independent and guided. We had the opportunity to do what we wanted the first couple days, then kick back and enjoy the ride the last two days. We arrived in the afternoon on Day 1 so had time to enjoy the hostel's rooftop pool before meeting our guide for a walking tour of Florence in the evening. The YellowSquare Hostel was fantastic - they offer so many activities and events that you could go there with no plans and find plenty to do. Our tour guide, Marie from Italy on a Budget tours, was fantastic. We were the only group scheduled for the walking tour, so we got a very personalized experience with lots of recommendations for places to eat and local knowledge, which we took advantage of during our free day in the city. The winetasting day was also fantastic and I enjoyed the variety of wines and scenery between both vineyards. Cinque Terre was absolutely beautiful. The only thing I would have changed would have been to spend more time in one of the towns instead of an hour or less in each. It's a long day of train travel. If we'd had more time in Manarola or Vernazza, I would have gone swimming or kayaking. I hope to go back to Florence some day and spend even more time there!

The travel director was amazing! Loved all the sites and accommodations!
The tour was quite good. Stacey the tour director made sure we were on time for all the relevant activities, giving us all the history concerning the different places. This is a very hectic fast moving tour I think Trafalgar should give a better explanation of fitness level required to undertake such an adventure. Many of the seniors complained of the grueling nature of the walks most of them uphill. There is not much free time to do any sort of shopping or site seeing on your own time if you signed up for all the optional tours. The breakfast was good but you were always feeling rushed to get on the bus never relaxed. The dinners were good and the only time you felt relaxed to enjoy your meal. Francisco the bus driver did an excellent job and he is a very helpful, courteous, gentleman.

Amanda is an excellent tour manager ! Everything done perfectly ! Greg also a superb driver of that very large bus !
Serkan was a wonderful tour guide and Declan was a rock star driver. With two kids (youngest is 5) I was worried about the trip. However, my daughter was well behaved and everyone said she was a delight. The tour guide even let her assist which helped keep her busy. I highly recommend this trip and if you are lucky enough to have Serkan you will have a great time guaranteed!

Insight Vacations

Insight Vacations

  • Excellent - 648 reviews for Europe tours
BEWARE! This is not an Insight Vacation Tour. Insight subcontracts this tour to Katarina Lines. That said, there is zero Insight presence on this tour. Not only did our boat get changed, sixty percent of the guests on this boat were booked through other travel agencies. Whatever quality we were expecting was diminshed by Katarina Lines need to fill seats. The onboard TD, self-titled tour designer, helped coordinate our arrivals and departures from different ports of call, but did little to inform us of the local history or tour sites. The local guides were average, ranging from a 20 minute introduction on Hvar to a general overview of Dubrovnik. Most days consisted of free time. Again, no Insight presence. Problems on the ship ranged from faulty WiFi on the sun deck to no internet service between midmignt and 0700, the coffee machine being turned off after meals, and other simple ammenities one would expect through out the day to name a few. The meals were repeatative, especially last's night dinner at breakfast. Although the ship itself was plesant, when stacked up against other ships in the harbor, it paled in comparison. Do yourself a favor, find another tour.
The tour with the sites that we visited was great. Alison, out tour director, was wonderful, very knowledgeable. Arthur, our bus driver was also great. Our one day tour guide and bus driver, Ann, was also great. I was not so impressed with the breakfast menu of cooked food. It was the same at every hotel. They need to change up the menu.

Great tour guide , good accommodation , careful driver , enough free time , informed guide , nice small group
What an amazing experience we had on this adventure! It was a perfect mix of guided experiences and free time to explore each place at your own pace. We saw a lot in 4 days, the drives never felt too long, we were very comfortable and the views were beautiful. The hotels were located very centrally and all within walking distance from the must-see areas. The communication before, during and after the tour was perfect. We learned so much about the area and would want to go back! Thank you to Choose Balkans and our guide Ilir!

This trip was a great experience from start to finish. There was a good mix of nationalities which made for an interesting group of people to travel with. Our guide Vojin was brilliant. He was interesting, informative & humorous as he explained the complicated history of each country. Vojin set up a WhatsApp group that enabled everyone to receive and share information which was a useful tool that everyone seemed to buy into. Our driver Slavcho also deserves a mention for his professionalism and skilful driving throughout the tour, which included some long travelling days. The hotels were probably better that we had anticipated but they tend to be a little out of town (Sofia, Belgrade, Sarajevo and Skopje), however taxis tend to be cheap should you wish to go back into town after check-in. Most days involve travelling a considerable distance and crossing borders so you need to be prepared for 4-6 hours on or with the coach before a late arrival at the hotel which was normally between 6.00 and 7.00pm. Generally we were not on the coach for more than two hours before a comfort break including food & drinks. This is a well thought out tour taking in so many great Cities & sights. There is so much history to take in as well as fantastic panoramic views. It would have been nice to have had an extra night in Ochrid to enjoy the beauty of the area & have a little more relaxation at the end of the tour. The additional excursions offered on the tour were reasonably priced and we particularly enjoyed the boat trip from Dubrovnik and the Balkans night in Ochrid. This was our first trip to the Balkans but it will not be out last. We thought this trip was very good value for money.
A wonderful way to explore the Balkans. Great group of people enhanced a wonderful experience. Highlights for me was Croatia, Mostar, and Montenegro!

Excellent trip it delivered what we were expecting, and more.
This was the worst tour I have ever been on. The tour director was misogynistic, ill informed and extremely rude. He made the tour pure agony. There were a lot of public holidays in the tour and everything was closed. Globus did not want to know about any of our concerns.

Really enjoyed the first part in Spain and Portugal, helped especially by the guide. The Moroccan guide was a disappointment, Chefchouen and Fes wonderful, not sure why we went all the way to Marrakech for more of the same, and the tired hotel didn’t help. So pleased the group was a fantastic bunch. We had a ball in spite of other things.
Could have been (should have) a day or two longer. I think there is enough to see in Ponta Delgada to justify a day there. Also, I would like to see the tour end where it starts. In Ponta Delgada.

Award-winning Small Group Tours in Europe’s Most Beautiful Places

Tours of a Lifetime

If this type of vacation appeals to you, you’ll enjoy our European Experiences trips! We offer small group tours in the most beautiful areas of Europe, special places that have captured our hearts in 30 years of European travel.

Each year we offer several weeks of The Luberon Experience in Provence, France, based in the village of Bonnieux (shown below) . Our other trips vary each year, as we share other wonderful places in Europe that we love with travelers looking for an in-depth experience. We’re beginning our 2024 season and just announced our 2025 schedule.

group tours europe

Now booking Fall 2024 and 2025 Trips

Fall 2024 trips.

Our 2024 season is well underway, and we’ve welcomed wonderful groups in England, France, and Italy. We still have a few openings in some of our 2024 trips.

We’re offering 24 trips in 2024 and 28 trips in 2025. Most of our trips are led by European Experiences owner and co-founder Kathy Wood or our partner in Provence, Jennifer Dugdale. Our new Inside Lyon trip will debut in 2025, led by our third team member, Drew Fedorka. We’re joined by an excellent co-leaders, including Kathy’s husband and co-founder Charley (now mostly retired). Learn about our team here .

Seven-night “Experience” trips

Kathy Wood leads seven-night Experience trips in the Luberon , the Chianti region of Tuscany, the Cotswolds , the Périgord (Dordogne) in southwest France, Normandy in northern France, Alsace in eastern France, and Puglia in southern Italy.

Jennifer Dugdale leads seven-night Experience trips in Paris , Mediterranean Provence , the Riviera Hillsides , and a new 2025 trip in northern Portugal .

Some Experience trips are now offered every other year.

Shorter “Inside” trips

We also offer four-night “Inside” trips based in cities, with a focus on special experiences and discoveries– not the typical tourist sites. These groups are smaller, about eight people. “Inside” trips are hosted by Jennifer Dugdale or Drew Fedorka and are intended to be combined with one of our week-long trips, but can be booked as a standalone trip. When an Inside trip is combined with an adjacent Experience, we’ll provide transportation between the two locations.

In France we offer Inside Paris and Inside Lyon , which can be combined with other trips in France. In England we offer Inside Bath before or after one our Cotswolds Experience weeks.

Longer “Experience” trips

We also offer several longer Experience trips, which include stays in several bases. Kathy and Charley Wood lead The Cornwall Experience (10 nights) and The European Christmas Experience (12 nights; four nights each in Salzburg, Munich, and Colmar).

Jennifer leads our new 11-night Morocco Experience trip, which was launched in March 2024. We’re especially excited about this new destination.

Trips Just for Women

We have a special commitment to help women travel. We’re delighted to offer six trips for groups of women only in 2024 and three women’s trips in 2025: our Women’s trips often include trips in the Luberon, the Riviera Hillsides, Mediterranean Provence, Paris (our four-night “Inside” experience), and the Cotswolds. Tour Europe

Card image cap

The clichés found when travelling Europe are true. Chocolate is tastier from confectioneries toured in Swiss villages , Mediterranean sunsets look like impressionist paintings, and the Roman Empire’s influences are found in every corner of the continent. But when you travel in Europe, you also discover things you never imagined. You experience tour through Italian mountains adorned with pagan myths, ancient Spanish cities dangling off the sides of cliffs, and pastel de nata that redefines the simple egg custard tart. On our small-group tours , we focus on the unexpected joys of Europe instead of the stereotypes. We do this to avoid the crowds and let you enjoy the true soul of the continent. You travel on mini-coaches with an expert driver and guide, stay in hand-picked travel accommodation , choose the attractions you pay for, support local communities, and go beyond the guidebooks. Discover our fresh style of small-group tours in Spain , Portugal , Italy, and Switzerland below.

When my husband and I started planning our 30th Anniversary trip to Italy we had no idea where to even begin. That’s when I stumbled across Alida’s TikTok videos. I absolutely LOVED her content. To be honest, at first I was skeptical about planning a trip like this off of someone I saw in a TikTok video, but after meeting with her we knew we picked the right travel agency. Our 17-day trip was absolutely incredible. Alida and Vagabonda Travel made our lifetime dream of touring Italy one we will never forget!

How to Choose the Right Tour Group

Group size, participants’ age range, style of travel and budget are among the factors you should consider when selecting an itinerary.

An illustration shows a stylized globe with buildings ranging from an old church to the Chrysler Building skyscraper. In the center of the globe, tourists in sunglasses and hats and T-shirts roam around the building. One group in particular is enlarged, with the central figure holding up a selfie stick with a cellphone, taking a photo of his group.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

Tour companies that offer multiday trips arrange most everything for you: lodging, sightseeing, food and transportation. But group size, style of travel and budget are among the considerations travelers should assess before picking a tour. Read on for tips.

Big group or small

Start your research by thinking about how many people you want to travel with and what your tolerance is for the social demands dictated by group size.

Smaller groups can move more nimbly and possibly see more. But they can also be more intensely social as you spend a great deal of time with the same people touring and dining.

Larger groups tend to require more time to get around, but they can also offer more social variety — for example, you can change up your lunch partners more easily.

“Large groups offer anonymity, allowing travelers to choose their level of interaction,” said Deborah Miller, a travel adviser and the owner of Edge of Wonder Travels Unlimited in San Francisco. “Conversely, smaller groups foster intimacy among travelers, guides and the destination itself.”

Look for age-appropriate trips

Think about the demographics of your travel party and consider matching that to a tour company.

Operators often segment their trips by age under the assumption that similarly aged people have more in common or prefer the same pace. Road Scholar , for example, caters to an intellectually curious 50-plus crowd.

On the other end of the spectrum, G Adventures offers a category of trips for “18-to-thirtysomethings” and Intrepid Travel has trips for 18-to-35-year-olds.

With their inherent age spans, families can be a tough demographic to fit into larger group departures, which is why companies tend to break up family offerings by age group.

The active tour company Backroads has three age segments for families, including trips for those with children 4 to 19, those with older teens and younger adults into their 20s, and those with children in their 20s and beyond.

“By definition, that creates somewhat of an age segmentation among parents, too,” said Tom Hale, the founder, president and chief executive of Backroads.

Go general or specific

A popular option for first-timers, a general tour will hit the highlights of a destination, like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in Paris or major sites in Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan.

Beyond the general approach, alternatives abound based on themes, styles of travel or hobbies.

Themed trips include a culinary tour of Sicily , a deep dive into literary England , Europe’s World War II battlefields and how women live in India .

In addition to topics, trips often revolve around the means of travel, such as going by train , on foot or by boat (a category that can be further segmented by size, from a cruise ship to a barge or a kayak ).

Tours can also allow you to pursue an interest like swimming or knitting in a unique destination.

Analyze tour inclusions

Once you determine where and how you want to go, prices will range from budget to luxury.

“For travelers on a budget, large group tours tend to be the best fit because it’s a great way to see major attractions at a lower price point,” said Cheyenne Schriefer, a travel adviser and the owner of All Travel Matters in Golden Valley, N.D.

But not all tours are built the same. To compare them, consider what they include.

For example, G Adventures has a 10-day hiking trip in Switzerland from $1,799 a person and a 10-day hiking trip in Portugal for $4,499. The latter is billed as a luxury trip, so the accommodations are pricier, but it also includes most meals, transfers and activities. The Swiss tour offers more basic lodgings, transfers, optional activities available for a fee, and fewer meals.

“Sometimes fewer inclusions are better than more,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of Frommer Media, which publishes Frommer’s guidebooks . She pointed out that restaurants that can accommodate busloads probably don’t attract local traffic and that independent sightseeing allows you to “wander through local neighborhoods to get the feel of local life.”

Expertise of the guide or tour leader can also alter the price and the experience. You can expect to pay more for a tour led by a specialist, such as an Egyptologist guiding a group along the Nile.

Gauge your level of independence

Do you prefer to follow a strict schedule that relieves you from having to find, say, a restaurant for dinner? Or do you appreciate some structure — like knowing your hotel reservations are covered — but also want free time to explore independently?

Tour companies run the gamut. Before booking, read the itineraries carefully to find out if the schedule is tight or loose. If that is not clear, call the company to ask.

For truly independent travelers, self-guided tours offered by companies such as Inntravel , Exodus Adventure Travels and Macs Adventure make your ground arrangements and provide an itinerary to follow. Popular in Europe, these itineraries tend to be inn-to-inn walking or cycling trips that include luggage transfers.

“Self-guided travelers are independent but love the support of having a trip arranged for them, and they don’t want to hike with a big backpack anymore,” said Jasper Verlaan, the U.S. sales director for Macs Adventure.

Ask for recommendations

If you’re still unsure about putting down a deposit once you’ve done your research, ask the tour company if you may speak to a past client.

“Ask for references,” said Lynn Cutler, the senior vice president of travel for Smithsonian Enterprises, which runs the tour company Smithsonian Journeys . “We’ll find them a traveler who has done this trip in the past and put them in touch.”

Group of 18 pals on loveholidays Benidorm break stranded with nowhere to stay

The friends, from Pontypridd, had travelled to Benidorm to celebrate a 50th birthday but were left with nowhere to stay when they arrived at the hotel they'd booked

The group who travelled from Pontypridd to Spain for a weekend break

  • 09:32, 12 Jul 2024

A group of 18 Brits were left in disbelief when they arrived at their hotel in Benidorm , Spain, for a celebratory weekend only to discover their rooms hadn't been booked.

The pals had travelled from Pontypridd to the popular holiday destination to mark a 50th birthday but were left stranded with no place to stay.

They had initially arranged the trip through loveholidays , but upon arrival, the hotel had no record of their booking and they were informed they would need to seek alternative accommodation. Karin Collins, a member of the group, shared their ordeal, claiming that they were assured by the travel company that they would be reimbursed if they found another place to stay.

"We arrived at the hotel around 5pm to be told that the rooms hadn't been booked. We were told that if we found somewhere else they would pay us back but it took us until about 10pm to get sorted so we missed the first night of our holiday ," she said.

Have you had a holiday go wrong? Email [email protected]

The group eventually found another hotel, which cost them an additional £3,000, not including the extra taxi fares. "We did manage to find another hotel and had to pay out £3,000 for that and pay for the extra taxis on top of it. It was not the start to the weekend that we had planned. We were only there for three days and was a real upset to have to deal with all of that. Then we had to phone and try and make lots of contact to try and get our money back," Karin added.

Loveholidays sprang into action, launching an urgent probe with their accommodation provider to unravel the mishap. After being contacted by WalesOnline, the company's spokesperson confirmed that not only would the full sum be refunded for the extra accommodation costs, but compensation was also dished out, reports Wales Online .

A spokesperson for loveholidays said: "We are very sorry to hear of Ms Collins' and her travel party's experience after their hotel overbooked. We have processed a full refund for the additional expenses they incurred and have offered compensation for the inconvenience caused. We are continuing to investigate the issue with the hotel to ensure it does not happen again."

This week England fans have vowed to head to Benidorm for the Euros final, with many Three Lions' supporters having been priced out of grabbing tickets to Germany. In a bid to soak up some sunshine as well as some atmosphere, many are now racing to Spain instead.

Nigel Pope, also known as the 'King of Benidorm' , has lived in the sunny seaside hotspot for seven years now. He's even built up a collective 70,000 TikTok followers for being in the know with all things Costa Blanca. The all-seeing and all-knowing Cornish native, who also works behind a bar, has been observing the atmosphere between Spanish and England fans throughout the tournament.

Nigel has warned that tensions could rise in the Spanish resort ahead of the final on Sunday. "I have noticed a very big increase in the amount of police here in Benidorm over the last few days. Many are walking around on foot so hopefully that will help stop any problems that might arise," he told the Daily Star.

"There are always areas in the New Town where most of the English tend to drink, I hope that most fans know that you don't mess with the Spanish police. I have heard of one incident where half a dozen English fans were throwing their drinks about, but not seen or heard of any violence."

Summer of Champions: Trip.com Group Reveals Travel Trends During Key Sporting Events

Who Is Travelling?

Chinese tourists are showing a taste for luxury, with the highest booking volume for suites and king-sized hotel rooms among other travellers, reflecting a desire for more spacious and upscale accommodations during their stay. The average spending per Chinese traveller has risen by 65%, with an increase in 5-star hotel bookings from the previous year.

Asian fans also display distinct differences regarding major sporting events compared to their European counterparts. They prefer to combine their sports viewing with broader travel plans, with them, on average, booking longer hotel stays than European travellers.

The average length of a stay for travellers from Asia has increased by 20% compared to the same period last year, with Chinese mainland, South Korean, and Hong Kong travellers staying the longest. This suggests that Asian tourists are extending their vacations to fully immerse themselves beyond the sporting event this summer.

Other sporting events, with their diverse range of sports and global representation, also attract international fans from Asia who often combine their attendance with extensive cultural and tourist activities. However, European fans, especially those following football this summer, primarily concentrate on cheering for their national football teams, with shorter stays dictated by the matches. This approach from Asian travellers amplifies the travel experience and encourages a deeper engagement with the host destination.

This summer, Asian travellers spent more on attractions than European travellers, favouring attractions like the Louvre Museum, Palace of Versailles and Seine River Cruise.

Where Are They Staying?

French luxury hotels and even "palaces" are popular travel options in Paris . Within Trip.com's 2024 Trip.Best 100 Global list, a collection of curated travel ranking lists based on genuine user reviews and booking popularity. French hotels appeared nine times within the top 100 luxury hotels. Five Parisian hotels were ranked in the top 20, with Hotel de Crillon, a Rosewood Hotel in Paris , securing the top spot. This trend towards luxury is also seen in gastronomy, with Trip Gourmet witnessing a 20% rise in restaurant reservations with gastronomic honours, such as Terry's Café, Liberto, L'Imperatif, Chez Milo , and Le Procope restaurants.

For those looking for a unique experience, there has been over 20% increase in bookings for alternative accommodation, such as vacation rentals and boutique lodgings. Within the Asian-Pacific market, Singapore leads the way for such accommodation beyond hotels with triple-digit growth, closely followed by Japan with double-digit growth.

For instance, visitors from Japan and Hong Kong are now making reservations to stay in Marseille , Lyon , and Nice , with bookings showing double-digit growth compared to the same period last year. Travellers are seeking a cultural experience inside and outside of Paris , with increasing interest in the French wine region of Provence.

Traditional attractions throughout France continue to captivate travellers from Asia with their rich historical and cultural charm. Top attractions in Paris , include The Louvre Museum, the Paris Opera House, the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland Paris. There has also been a rise in orders for private tours in France , increasing by over 50% year-on-year.

The surge in bookings and enthusiasm among travellers reflects a deepening interest in combining sports tourism with cultural exploration, highlighting a growing desire to experience more than just the traditional vacation. Sports events provide a unique gateway for tourists to engage with the culture and community of their destination.

Six Topeka teenagers travel across Europe on a two-week music tour with Musicians Abroad

group tours europe

Performing a two-week music tour across Europe was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for six local teenagers.

Six Topeka West music students returned home June 30 after traveling across Europe performing with about 150 other Kansas music students.

Topekans included Hannah Kamprath, Charlotte Claspill, Emma Shump, Camille Cluke, Colette Cluke and Ali Vanderpool.

Kansas Musicians Abroad

The students participated in the national organization Musicians Abroad , a music tour company that has taken American high schoolers around Europe since 1987. The organization builds state-based groups.

Out of the Kansas group, the six Topeka West students were the only Topekans to participate this year.

Kevin Harry, Topeka West band assistant director and Musicians Abroad staff member, has taken Kansas students on its trip two times before this; once in 2005 and again in 2007.

To participate in the touring band, choir or orchestra students had to be nominated by their music educators. Musicians Abroad staff members then selected candidates from those nominations.

A two-week European excursion

The group visited five European countries — England, France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

While traveling, the group visited multiple landmarks and attractions, while also performing in cathedrals and other famous places.

"It was insane because I've never seen such beautiful architecture," Shump said. "I've also never been in a church before. So, my first church was these huge places with the most beautiful artwork, and it was just insane.

"Then to perform in them, it felt crazy because we're used to being in a little gym or a dingy little hall. Well, I didn't think they were dingy, but then I started performing in these churches and I'm like, 'OK, I totally get it.'"

Harry and the students said their favorite place to visit was Switzerland because it was one of the most beautiful places they'd ever seen. Harry said the mountains looked like they were from a painting.

The group said they wished they could have visited the catacombs in Paris.

"You only have so much time, you know," Harry said.

The Cluke sisters brought back a Swiss Army Knife from Switzerland for their father. Shump brought a vintage Littlest Pet Shop toy to take on her adventures.

"We were at the airport, and they were calling someone's name over the intercom," Claspill said. "It was 'Chuck Funk' and we were like, 'This is so funny,' and the lady who was even saying it over the intercom, she couldn't stop laughing, so we named (the toy) Chuck Funk."

Group members took photos with Funk and posed it with iconic European backdrops, such as the Eiffel Tower.

Rekindling a love of music and finding a passion in culture.

Camille Cluke said the trip helped affirm her goal to become a music therapist. She graduated from Topeka West in May and plans to attend Washburn University.

"That was really good," she said. "I'd say it definitely helped me gain back my love of music. I'd say it let me know that it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life because it was just really cool to perform in these venues where the sound would just resonate in such a way.

"It was just so great and just seeing how the people responded to our performances. It was really sweet."

Shump said this was her first time traveling abroad, and it made her more interested in exploring other cultures.

"I was never like super big on traveling," Shump said. "I was like, 'We're doing this.' I want to go to other places. I want to go back to Switzerland."

Euro 2024 bracket, schedule: England vs. Spain meet in a high-profile final in pursuit of landmark title

Here's everything to know about the tournament's results and upcoming games.

untitled-design-2024-07-12t164422-326.png

Euro 2024 has is already almost over . We started with 24 teams but just two remain after the top two teams from each group and four third-placed teams made up the field for the opening of the knockout stage.

All of the tournament's major contenders emerged from the group stage relatively unscathed, although the round was not without some surprises. Although France and Belgium both advanced, neither won their group with Austria and Romania, respectively, taking home those honors. The shakeup has left the Euros with a handful of heavyweight matchups earlier than expected in the tournament, with France vs. Belgium being the highlight of the round of 16. in The quarterfinals Spain topped Germany in the match of the round before defeating France in the semifinals, and they'll be facing England how made it through the comparatively easier side of the bracket, defeating Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
