IDW is excited to announce that acclaimed screenwriter, producer, and comic book writer Marc Guggenheim (CW’s television series Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow , Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca ) will assume the captain’s chair for an all-new, five-issue comic book series, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE — ECHOES , set immediately after the events of the momentous 1979 film .

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Echoes #1 Cover A by Jake Bartok

Featuring spectacular artwork by Oleg Chudakov and colors by DC Alonso , ECHOES pits the venerated Admiral James T. Kirk and his crew against enemies both terrifying and shockingly familiar! When a space anomaly thrusts a criminal mastermind — pursued by a very determined pilot on a mission — into our universe, the Enterprise must stop them from unintentionally starting a war with the Romulans and unleashing a superweapon of foreign technology into the system. But things get infinitely more complicated when these newcomers to our reality remove their helmets, revealing that they’re doppelgängers of our beloved heroes!

“Despite watching the occasional fragment of a Star Trek episode here and there with my father, my true introduction was going to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture with my grandparents — I was entranced. I’m thrilled that IDW and Paramount Global have allowed me to revisit that time period, which was so impactful to me and my love of Star Trek ,” says Guggenheim. “Almost all Trek stories are told from the point of view of the Enterprise crew, but I was interested in telling a story from the perspective of an outsider as a means of recapturing how it felt for me when I first saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture .”

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Echoes #1 Cover B by Oleg Chudakov

“What does it mean to draw this new Star Trek adventure? It’s like revisiting my childhood, but at the same time learning something new. It’s amazing!” says Chudakov.

“When everything in life feels like it’s moving too fast towards the future, it’s always important to step back and revisit where it all came from. And that’s exactly what we’re doing with this comic focusing on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture time frame ,” says series editor Heather Antos . “No one knows more about this period in Trek history than Guggenheim, we’ve learned…and we could think of no one better suited to take Kirk and his crew on this wild adventure. Paired with Chudakov’s energetic, character-driven inks, this is one mission that the crew of the Enterprise soon won’t forget. Oh, and did we mention that there are possible easter eggs to some of our other Trek books, too?”

Arriving in stores this May, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE — ECHOES #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by Jake Bartok, Cover B by series artist Oleg Chudakov, and retailer incentive variants by Luke Sparrow and Rod Reis .

New 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes' comic series channels the 1979 film

Screenwriter Marc Guggenheim takes center seat for this deadly 'Trek' adventure coming in May.

idw star trek the motion picture

Nearly 44 years ago, Trekkies around the globe swooned as the long-delayed silver screen version of their favorite sci-fi offering arrived in theaters.

Director Robert Wise's " Star Trek: The Motion Picture " debuted in December 1979, and its volatile V’ger energy field wreaked galactic havoc. "Star Trek: The Original Series" had been off the air since 1969, and creator Gene Roddenberry was endeavoring for nearly a decade to launch a big-budget Hollywood feature bringing back the TV show’s entire cast.

When it arrived that Christmastime, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" scored average reviews with its cerebral plot and long runtime, but since then its reputation has risen in estimation as a smart sci-fi classic, especially as the restored 4K Director’s Edition has beamed on to streaming services for a new generation.

Now, IDW Publishing is returning to that spacey world of bell-bottomed uniforms and regulation disco haircuts in the form of a new five-issue comic book release titled "Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes," which takes place following the Earth-saving events of the 1979 spectacle.

Written by screenwriter, producer, and comic book scribe Marc Guggenheim (CW’s "Arrow," DC's "Legends of Tomorrow," Marvel Comics' "Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca"), then matched with engaging art by Russian illustrator Oleg Chudakov and colors by DC Alonso, this major miniseries project finds the familiar Enterprise crew clashing with their sinister doubles.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture-Echoes

"When everything in life feels like it's moving too fast towards the future, it's always important to step back and revisit where it all came from. And that's exactly what we're doing with this comic focusing on the 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' time frame," notes series editor Heather Antos.

"No one knows more about this period in 'Trek' history than Guggenheim, we've learned … and we could think of no one better suited to take Captain Kirk and his crew on this wild adventure," Antos added.  Paired with Chudakov’s energetic, character-driven inks, this is one mission that the crew of the Enterprise soon won't forget. Oh, and did we mention that there are possible easter eggs to some of our other 'Trek' books, too?"

Here’s the official miniseries synopsis:

"Echoes" pits the venerated Captain James T.

"Despite watching the occasional fragment of a 'Star Trek' episode here and there with my father, my true introduction was going to see 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' with my grandparents — I was entranced," said Guggenheim in an IDW press release.

"I'm thrilled that IDW and Paramount Global have allowed me to revisit that time period, which was so impactful to me and my love of 'Star Trek,' Guggenheim said. "Almost all 'Trek' stories are told from the point of view of the Enterprise crew, but I was interested in telling a story from the perspective of an outsider as a means of recapturing how it felt for me when I first saw 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture.'"

IDW’s "Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes #1" lands in comic book shops and online retailers this May with a variety of variant covers from series illustrator Oleg Chudakov and artists Jake Bartok, Luke Sparrow and Rod Reis.

IDW Celebrating 500th Star Trek Comic With Big Era-Spanning Anthology

That’s a beautiful ship set to explore the final frontier while it was still wild. The encylopedia conjectured a whole new 5 year mission there, they should consider doing that with the Kelvinverse cast (though bring on the monster maroon uniforms!). Sounds like an interesting story too. Still love the DC comics set at that time period, some of the best Trek ever.

DC’s comics weren’t set after TMP. They were set after Star Trek II. Marvel’s comics and the newspaper strips were set after TMP.

Yes sorry, I meant TOS movie eta Vs TMP specifically.

A whole bunch of novels were set in that era, though, right up to a bit before WOK.

There’s actually over ten years between TMP and WOK. For some of it Spock was in command, but there may even be room for *two* five-year missions in there.

It’s going to be tough to beat Untold Voyages.

The A still looks beautiful! Was so happy to see it on Picard last season. A little disappointed we didn’t get to see it in action though. I thought we were going to see the D, A, NX-01 refit and Voyager all team up together in the finale, but I now realize that would’ve been beyond unrealistic lol.

This comic looks great, I just wish I read comics. ;)

That’s not the A. That’s the actual Enterprise. The original refit. The A was another ship (Yorktown?) just renamed. Shakespeare was wrong. A rose by any other name would NOT smell as sweet…

Ugh, yeah I always think of the A when I see the refit lol. Thanks for the correction!

It seems to be a common issue since they even made the same mistake on the Short Treks episode Ephraim and Dot

Shane Johnson, in Mr. Scott’s Guide to the Enterprise, said the A was a ship called the Ti-Ho which was not a refit but built new in the “refit” style. But Mr. Scott’s Guide doesn’t match canon (or what became canon) in a number of ways, most notably his chronology, which he took from the Starfleet chronology.

Yorktown would be fitting in that it was Roddenberry’s original planned name for what became the Enterprise.

(If the A was a new, or relatively new, ship, it’s harder to explain why it was decommissioned after TUC, but I can still think of a few reasons it would be- the damage, the class being replaced by Excelsiors, etc.)

I never thought of that!

All those ‘analogue’ ships in the museum could have been manned by a bunch of ‘old wrinkles’ and the combined cavalry could have assisted the D! Maybe even a few old Klingons on the Bounty! That would have been so cool. A lot of old bridges to rebuild though.

I was really hoping to see Shatner-as-Kirk on the A, a hope even more built up when we saw that his body was on ice. Alas no. :-)

Lookit that, a Colonial Viper…..Galactica can’t be to far away.

Amazing how this movie still resonates after lo these many years…

this is gonna be a Star Wars crossover, isn’t it? those little ships look WAY too damn Wars-y for it NOT to be . . .

Wow! is that a Viper from Battlestar Galactica?

i was always confused….between ST TMP and ST2 TWOK did Admiral Kirk have a 5 year mission on the Enterprise refit?

I don’t recall if it’s canonical or not, but most of the beta-canon stuff def has him on a mission for at least a few years (Marvel did a run before DC, plus several ST novels over the years have him commanding the ship before returning to Starfleet.)

That’s definitely a colonial Viper from BSG. This is maybe going to be some next level fanfic.

After a couple of drinks…..maybe an X Wing?

Reminds me of a Star Wars x-wing

To those of you claiming that looks like a Colonial Viper:

It doesn’t. Totally the wrong design. Look up the Viper on Google Images.

I was thinking more like SW E-Wing.

I am so into this!!!!!

'Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes' features Kirk and crew vs. doppelgängers

Comic Books

‘star trek: the motion picture—echoes’ features kirk and crew vs. doppelgängers.

The five-part ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes’ is by Marc Guggenheim and Oleg Chudakov.

IDW has revealed a new miniseries is on the way featuring the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise by Marc Guggenheim and Oleg Chudakov called Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes ! The five-issue series is set immediately after the events of the momentous 1979 film. It arrives in comic shops this May.

“Despite watching the occasional fragment of a Star Trek episode here and there with my father, my true introduction was going to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture with my grandparents—I was entranced. I’m thrilled that IDW and Paramount Global have allowed me to revisit that time period, which was so impactful to me and my love of Star Trek,” says Guggenheim. “Almost all Trek stories are told from the point of view of the Enterprise crew, but I was interested in telling a story from the perspective of an outsider as a means of recapturing how it felt for me when I first saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”

So what’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes about?

Echoes pits the venerated Captain James T. Kirk and his crew against enemies both terrifying and shockingly familiar! When a space anomaly thrusts a criminal mastermind—pursued by a very determined pilot on a mission—into our universe, the Enterprise must stop them from unintentionally starting a war with the Romulans and unleashing a superweapon of foreign technology into the system. But things get infinitely more complicated when these newcomers to our reality remove their helmets, revealing that they’re doppelgängers of our beloved heroes!

“When everything in life feels like it’s moving too fast towards the future, it’s always important to step back and revisit where it all came from. And that’s exactly what we’re doing with this comic focusing on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture time frame,” says series editor Heather Antos. “No one knows more about this period in Trek history than Guggenheim, we’ve learned…and we could think of no one better suited to take Captain Kirk and his crew on this wild adventure. Paired with Chudakov’s energetic, character-driven inks, this is one mission that the crew of the Enterprise soon won’t forget. Oh, and did we mention that there are possible easter eggs to some of our other Trek books, too?”

Check out a few of the covers to the first issue below by Jake Bartok, Oleg Chudakov, and retailer incentive variants by Luke Sparrow and Rod Reis.

SAN DIEGO, CA (February 15, 2023) – IDW is excited to announce that acclaimed screenwriter, producer, and comic book writer Marc Guggenheim (CW’s television series Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca) will assume the captain’s chair for an all-new, five-issue comic book series, Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Echoes, set immediately after the events of the momentous 1979 film. Featuring spectacular artwork by Oleg Chudakov and colors by DC Alonso, Echoes pits the venerated Captain James T. Kirk and his crew against enemies both terrifying and shockingly familiar! It’s like revisiting my childhood, but at the same time learning something new. It’s amazing!” says Chudakov. “When everything in life feels like it’s moving too fast towards the future, it’s always important to step back and revisit where it all came from.
