Camels, Cows and Emus, Oh My! – A Review of Wild Florida Drive-Thru Safari

Where can you see camels, cows, bison, and bobcats, all without leaving your car? At Wild Florida Drive-Thru Safari Park , in Kissimmee, which boasts an engaging and entertaining wild animal drive through safari. From emus to alligators, you will be able to see many different animals as you drive through this Florida safari park.

wild florida airboats

How it works

The premise of the drive-thru safari is simple. You enter the park and drive around the park on an unpaved road. Do not leave your car, as you will find yourself right next to the animals. As we drove through, we saw several animals come right up to our window to say hello (and we saw one emu that went from car to car pecking into the windows). As you drive along the curved 2+ mile road, you’ll find lemurs, alligators, and other animals alongside the road, and even in front of your car. On our visit, several cows caused a traffic jam.

Tip: As you enter the park, you are given a checklist, so ensure that you have a pen ready. Your kids can use it to check off the animals that they see as you drive through the park.

On the checklist that kids are given at the entrance, there is a fun fact about each animal that the kids can read to you and to each other. Most of the trail that you drive surrounds the park so many (but not all) of the animals will be on the driver’s side. However, if you feel like your kids didn’t get to see everything equally (or you just really liked it) as you exit, there is a turnaround that lets you re-enter the safari, and same-day re-entry is included in the ticket price. You may want to have the kids switch sides first, though and you can make a quick stop in the parking lot to do that.

Orlando Parents Recommends: If your kids love safari animals, check out the National Geographic store at ShopDisney . You can get stuffed safari animals, books with fun animal facts and more.

Be prepared to go slowly

Depending on how many cars are driving through at the same time, be prepared to stop frequently. The speed limit inside the park is 5 miles per hour but when we went, we were usually going even slower than that. Several families had their sun-roofs open and let taller kids stand through them to see everything. You need to stay alert while driving as the animals will cross the road as well.

Orlando Parents Recommends: I use Rakuten to get rebates on my everyday shopping online and then use the money that I have saved to go out to dinner with the family.

Other things to do at Wild Florida

Wild Florida also has a walk-through exhibit where you can learn more about alligators, zebras, watusi, and other animals, as well as talk to the staff about how they keep the animals safe and healthy. There is a playground here so kids can play and run around in a safe environment. For kids who can’t keep their hands to themselves, there is a petting zoo where they can pet and feed baby animals.

And if you don’t feel like staying on land, Wild Florida Airboats (part of the greater Wild Florida complex) also offers exciting airboat rides. Normally, these rides are scheduled for either a half-hour or hour, but you can book private tours as well. As the boat flies along Cypress Lake, the tour guide will help you find alligators, eagles, and other animals that live along the marsh. This all-ages ride is sure to excite every member of your family, from the littlest kids to the biggest. That’s if the little ones don’t fall asleep from the vibrations in the boat.

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, both the walk-through exhibit and airboats are closed until further notice, but this gives you a good reason to return. One fun activity that is still open is the giraffe feeding. As you finish your drive, you can park your car and pick up some leaves at the giraffe feeding stand. Hold them out and the giraffe will come and pluck the leaves from you using its prehensile tongue. It’s a lot of fun, but depending on the timing, you could be closer to people than you want to be. It is something you should do with caution.

Tip: While the temptation is there to keep the windows down the entire time to see everything better, you should be warned that especially on a hot day, the outside smell can become overwhelming.

Overall, Wild Florida Drive-Thru Safari Park is a great way to get out of the house and explore and see some exciting animals without having to come in contact with too many other people. Kids will be very excited to see cows, water buffalo, and bison on and around the road and both alligators and crocodiles in ponds.

Wild Florida: Drive Through the Wild (and Paint with Giraffes)!

Calling all animal lovers! There’s an attraction in Orlando you may just want to add to your vacation itinerary: Wild Florida . This fantastic drive-thru safari allows you to travel alongside free-roaming herds of American bison, zebra, antelope, and more!

While the safari alone would be incredible enough, Wild Florida also boasts a Gator Park, animal shows, airboat tours, and – my favorite part – animal encounters. You can get to know amazing Florida natives as well as exotic species from around the world! With so many unique ways to meet and greet these critters, Wild Florida provides a full day of memorable fun.

From sloths to porcupines to ring-tailed lemurs, animal enthusiasts of all ages will find themselves enchanted by each creature as they journey through the wilds of this one-of-a-kind adventure!

Wild Florida Drive Thru Safari Park

Perhaps Wild Florida’s biggest claim to fame is its drive-thru safari. With over 150 animals (both exotic and native) roaming across an expansive 170 acres of land, you’ll have the chance to see giraffes, scimitar oryx, mouflon sheep, and more simply out and about, living their best lives.

Giraffe smiling.

It’s incredibly fun getting to see these animals in an unrestricted habitat – especially since that means they can come right up to your car! You can get closer to the wildebeest and deer here than you ever could in a traditional zoo .

We also love that for just $5.00, you can participate in giraffe feeding! Getting to hand-feed a giraffe is a heart-warming and unforgettable experience – as well as a trust exercise! Their size, when up close, can be pretty intimidating, but they, indeed, are gentle giants. The opportunity to experience their sweet (and hungry) nature firsthand is extraordinary.

When you come to the drive-thru safari, you simply drive your own car along the gravel trails and enjoy the sights!

Wild Florida tickets are $34 for adults and $24 for children. Florida residents receive discounted prices of $24 per adult and $19 per child. Reservations can be booked online through Wild Florida’s website! The safari is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Gallivant Through the Gator Park

Included in the price of a Wild Florida safari admissions ticket is a visit to their Gator Park!

A large alligator resting near water.

The Gator Park is home to more than 200 native and exotic animals – not just gators (although, gators are stinkin’ rad ). More akin to a regular zoo, you can walk through the park and explore the different habitats of bobcats, lemurs, sloths, owls, and even an endangered Florida panther named Nala! Whether taking a stroll along the canopy-shaded boardwalk or feeding baby animals in the petting zoo, you’ll find many enjoyable moments throughout your self-guided stroll.

While in the Gator Park, be sure to catch one of the exotic animal shows (held at various times throughout the day), gator feedings, or a show with Crusher the gator!

Snap a “Slothie”

If it wasn’t obvious, Wild Florida is home to some real cuties! With that in mind and with the goal of creating lasting connections between animals and people, Wild Florida offers exclusive animal encounters!

Animal encounters may be booked in addition to admission, ranging from $20 to $230, depending on the experience and animal. One of the most popular encounters is meeting, petting, and taking selfies – aka “slothies” – with a two-toed sloth! (Or you can upgrade to the VIP sloth experience, where you get to hold the sloth, too!)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Wild Florida (@wildfloridairboats)

An incredibly unique encounter is the giraffe painting experience. You’ll sit on the raised feeding platform – eye level with a giraffe – and work together to turn a blank canvas into a masterpiece! During this time, you’ll also be allowed to reward the giraffe’s artistic endeavors with giraffe feed and even pet your new friend!

Another once-in-a-lifetime encounter is “Dine with Crusher,” where you get to eat lunch with Crusher – a 1,000+ pound alligator – and his trainer. As you enjoy your meal, Crusher’s trainer will tell you all about this amazing gator, and you’ll get to feed Crusher, too!

Other encounters include meeting a ring-tailed lemur (I met one and thought its feet felt like gummy bears!), meeting a capybara, meeting a porcupine, feeding gators, training the albino gators Snowflake and Blizzard, or taking a VIP reptile tour!

When it comes to animal encounters, you really can’t go wrong because each one is bound to be unforgettable!

Hop Aboard an Airboat

Prefer traveling by water instead of land? Another adventure option is taking an airboat tour! Airboat tour admission begins at $35 for adults for a half-hour tour or $62 for an hour. (There are also private and nighttime tour options!) As with the drive-thru safari, admission to the Wild Florida Gator Park is included with these tickets! ( Reservations can be made online.)

Airboat in the Everglades.

Explore the headwaters of the Everglades and keep your eyes peeled for wild gators, ospreys, and eagles! Gliding through these waters is a true taste of being in the Florida wilderness.

Have a Wild Day!

While you can opt for a regular safari or airboat tour (plus Gator Park) ticket deal, the wildest animal fans might want to consider Wild Florida’s adventure packages.

The Half Day Adventure Package ($90) includes a one-hour airboat tour, the Gator Park, an animal encounter and family photo with Fluffy the alligator, gator feeding, as well as lunch for yourself from the Chomp House Grill.

Suppose you like to keep your feet firmly planted on terra firma. In that case, you might prefer the VIP safari experience ($175), which includes feeding Walter and Leroy the giraffes, an hour-long private tour of the safari, time in the Gator Park, a photo with Fluffy, gator feeding, and lunch from the Chomp House Grill.

Lastly, there’s the Ultimate Adventure Package ($245) which really includes the best of everything at Wild Florida! You’ll get FOUR wild animal encounters (including sloth, lemur, and porcupine), time in Gator Park, an airboat tour, AND a drive-thru safari tour!

Whether you choose to splurge on an adventure package or simply stick to basic admissions, animal lovers will definitely enjoy time spent at Wild Florida!! With integral connections to (and approval from) Florida conservation entities, you can also rest assured your visit is supporting an organization that genuinely cares for and helps animals.

Stay wild, friends!

Landon McReynolds , Producer

KENANSVILLE, Fla. – Wild Florida’s drive-thru safari is about to get bigger and better.

The animal park in Osceola County announced Friday that it’s adding two additional miles to its drive-thru safari and adding some more animals to the experience.

“We’re thrilled to expand our drive-thru safari in more ways than one this summer,” said Sam Haught, co-owner of Wild Florida. “Not only will it be incredible to grow our existing herds and give them a more authentic environment they would normally have in the wild, but to also showcase this diversity of species to guests from the comfort of their own cars.”

Officials said the current 85-acre drive-thru Safari Park has expanded to a total of 170 acres.

When it opens to the public on June 14, the safari will be a total of 4 miles.

The Safari Park is home to a number of exotic animals, including herds of wildebeest, water buffalo, watusi cattle, eland antelope, brahman cattle, zebra, highlander cattle, camels, three ostrich and an all-white elk.

Wild Florida opened to the public in 2010 on Lake Cypress. Officials said it started off with a 14-acre Gator Park and airboat tours, and now its grown to include a number of experiences that educates individuals on various animal species and Central Florida’s natural resources.

Admission to Wild Florida’s Drive-thru Safari Park is $31 per adult and $22 per child.

Florida residents can get into the park for $22 per adult and $17 per child.

The Solar Eclipse and Wildlife

Eclipses offer a rare opportunity to study animal behavior in unusual conditions..

A black and white bird with orange legs perches on a tree branch.

On Monday, April 8, Americans from coast to coast will have their eyes turned to the skies. But as this year’s solar eclipse approaches totality, they shouldn’t forget to look around them, too.

Eclipses, one of nature’s most unusual and dramatic phenomena, have well-documented effects on animal behavior. In previous eclipses, observers have noticed a general quieting of animal activity around them, with many animals becoming inactive or going silent. A 2017 study at a South Carolina zoo — located in the path of totality of an eclipse that year — found that 75 percent of observed animals changed their behavior during the event.

But why? Given their rarity, the full effect of eclipses on animals isn’t yet well-understood. For some wildlife, however, the event seems to suppress typical daytime activity while triggering the types of behaviors associated with nightfall.

A brown and cream-colored owl looks directly into the camera.

During an eclipse — particularly in the path of totality — the sky darkens, and temperatures can drop . This can lead birds (many of which are known to change their behavior in response to lighting intensity) to quiet their calling and leave the sky , with some behaving as if they’re preparing to roost . Bees and other diurnal insects may become less active, while some flowers close their petals . Spiders have been observed spinning down their webs, as many do before nightfall.

Meanwhile, though the effects here seem less pronounced, some nighttime animals may start to become active as the eclipse nears totality. Frogs, crickets , and owls have been observed calling, as they often do at dusk. In the 2017 eclipse, which took place in August, fireflies became active in some areas.

Overall, however, eclipses are often marked by a lull in animal activity, with diurnal animals resuming their regular behavior as the event subsides.

Where can I watch wildlife during the solar eclipse?

While a partial eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, the effects on animals are likely to be more significant closer to the path of totality — the band of earth’s surface where the moon can be seen fully covering the sun. This path will cross fifteen eastern states from Texas to Maine throughout Monday afternoon. Full totality will last just a few minutes in any given location, but changes in light may be noticeable in the hours before and after the event.

Wildlife can be observed anywhere, from a local park to your own backyard. For best viewing opportunities, find somewhere quiet — ideally away from roads or large crowds — where it will be easier to listen for changes in sounds during the solar eclipse.

More than 30 national wildlife refuges and 27 national park units fall in the path of totality, for those able to make the trip. Many will be hosting official viewing events; you can check with your local park’s website or social media accounts for more information.

A wild feline turns its head towards the camera.

A citizen science opportunity

For those interested in helping scientists better understand the solar eclipse’s effects on wildlife, there are several opportunities to participate. Researchers hope these initiatives — using technologies and platforms unavailable to them in past eclipses — can provide the data needed to draw broader conclusions about animal behavior.

  • NASA’s Eclipse Soundscape Project invites Americans to document their experiences of the eclipse through audio recordings and written notes.
  • Solar Eclipse Safari , a project run by researchers at NC State, asks participants to document changes in animal behavior during the event.

You can also document your experiences using citizen science apps such as iNaturalist and eBird , which serve as public databases for researchers and amateur naturalists alike.
